6 Things You Don't Know About Panera Bread, Straight From an Employee

If you've ever wondered what it's like behind the counter at Panera Bread, you'll enjoy the insider secrets from this employee's Reddit AMA. During the "Ask Me Anything" conversation online, a person who works at Panera Bread answered questions about the truth about the crazy-delicious mac and cheese, the one thing you should avoid ordering, and what the company does with all its unsold bread at the end of the day. Here are the answers to some of your burning Panera Bread questions, straight from someone who knows best.

The reason the mac and cheese is SO good is . . . calories.

When asked why the mac and cheese is "so f*cking good," the Panera employee said, "It's very good because it isn't that healthy for you. It has a lot of calories tbh."

Also, it arrives at the store frozen.

"They aren't lying when they say that all their food is 100 percent clean so nothing is bad for you. However, that doesn't mean that all the food is good for you. The mac and cheese, for example, comes into the store premade and frozen in a bag and it is heated either in boiling water or the microwave if need be."

There are two things customers do that drive employees CRAZY.

"Two things. The first is when we make a small mistake and they completely lose their minds. If we make a mistake of any kind, we'll do everything that we can to fix it and make it up to you, no need to cause a scene just because we forgot to give you a fork. The second is when customers come in 10 minutes before close and order a ton of food then eat in store."

The one thing you should never order past lunchtime? Avocado.

"Avacados usually sit out open for a number of hours. They are fine around lunchtime but as the day goes on, they get older."

The employee discount is really good.

"I honestly would never eat at Panera if I didn't have an employee discount (70 percent)."

Panera donates all of its extra bread at the end of the day.

"Yes, at the end of the day we donate all our unused bread to a homeless shelter."

Time For a Coffee Run! Starbucks Just Made an Exciting Change to Its Espresso

Starbucks is introducing a new item to the permanent menu, and this time it's not a trendy Frappuccino. On Tuesday, Jan. 9, Starbucks launched Blonde Espresso, the first new espresso on the menu in more than 40 years. The Blonde Espresso is a lighter roast that has just as much caffeine as its dark-roast counterpart, which up until now was the only espresso option for Starbucks's lattes and espresso-based drinks, like Americanos. Now you'll have the option of choosing your espresso for the first time based on what you like: dark or light roast.

In a press release, Starbucks said the Blonde Espresso is "lighter with a smooth taste," as compared to Starbucks's original espresso, which is "bolder and roastier." If this sounds like a better choice for you over the intensity of the darker espresso, Starbucks suggests trying the Blonde version with iced drinks, like an iced Americano or a Blonde Vanilla Latte. Starbucks makes the new espresso roast with lightly roasted Latin American and East African beans to bring out their "sweet citrus notes and smooth body." Just as you have the option for a Blonde Roast, Pike Place, or Dark Roast when you order drip coffee at Starbucks, now you'll have a choice for your espresso drinks, too. Sounds like this is the perfect time for a coffee run!

Diet Coke Unveils a Sleek New Can - and 4 Intriguing New Flavors

Say goodbye to the Diet Coke can you now know. In an effort to appeal to younger consumers, Diet Coke is launching a sleek new design. Whereas the previous can had a busier design with larger text, the redesigned can is more streamlined and simplified. In addition, Diet Coke unveiled four unexpected new flavors: Ginger Lime, Feisty Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange, and Twisted Mango.

"We're modernizing what has made Diet Coke so special for a new generation," Diet Coke group director Rafael Acevedo said in a press statement. "Millennials are now thirstier than ever for adventures and new experiences, and we want to be right by their side."

Though the original flavor won't be changing, those four new flavors will add variety to the brand and allow Diet Coke to compete with the many sparkling drinks that have become so popular - which POPSUGAR also deemed one of the biggest trends of the coming year.

The new flavors are set to come in taller cans, and the original flavor will be available in both tall and standard-size cans, shown below. Keep an eye out for them when they hit shelves later this month!

The Completely Addictive Method of Cooking Broccoli and Cauliflower

It won't be a challenge to eat your veggies if you try this easy technique for roasting cauliflower and broccoli. For months, a few women in our office have been praising roasted cruciferous veggies. I'm already a huge fan of baked kale chips, roasted brussels sprouts, and oven-crisped cabbage, so I'm not sure why it took me so long to try out roasted cauliflower and broccoli. Now that I have, I'm never going back to the steamed stuff. The oven morphed the little veggie trees into crisp nuggets that could almost pass for chips. They are addictive . . . don't be surprised if those around you fight for the last bites!

Here's what you'll do:

  1. Cut the broccoli and cauliflower into equally sized pieces.
  2. Spread across a rimmed sheet tray, leaving space between each floret. Drizzle olive oil across the veggies and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Roast in a 400°F oven for 18-23 minutes, or until crispy to your liking.

Sparkling, Seltzer, Soda: A Primer on Carbonated Water

Soda water, seltzer, club soda, sparkling water, mineral water: there are so many different fizzy waters out there. Are they all the same thing?

Carbonated water - water into which carbon dioxide has been dissolved - is a broad term that encompasses all fizzy waters; it's used interchangeably with sparkling water and soda water (a prewar term for the same thing). Within this category, there are several distinctions: seltzer, club soda, and mineral water.

Seltzer and club soda have both been artificially produced by passing pressurized carbon dioxide through water, but while seltzer contains no added ingredients or flavorings, club soda contains additives such as table salt, sodium bicarbonate, or potassium bicarbonate to add a slightly salty flavor.

In contrast, an effervescent mineral water such as Perrier or San Pellegrino is water that contains naturally occurring carbonation and minerals. Since it's bottled directly from a natural source, it tends to be pricier and has a more delicate effervescence than other carbonated waters. For these reasons, it's typically enjoyed alone, rather than used as a drink mixer.

Macarons: Don't Confuse Them With Macaroons

It's high time we set the record straight: the word "macaron" is not an alternate spelling of macaroon. In fact, the two terms refer to distinctly different things. Both macarons and macaroons are confections, and both names are derived from ammaccare, which is Italian for "to crush" - but that's where the similarities end.

A macaron specifically refers to a meringue-based cookie made with almond flour, egg whites, and granulated and powdered sugar, then filled with buttercream, ganache or fruit curd. The delicate treat has a crunchy exterior and a weightless interior with a soft ending that's almost nougatlike in its chewiness. To add to the confusion, it's often called a French macaroon.

In contrast, the word macaroon is a generic phrase that is applied to a number of small, sweet confections. Mostly, the term is equated with the moist and dense coconut macaroon, which is composed of egg whites, sugar, and dried coconut, often piped with a star-shaped tip, and sometimes dipped in chocolate. The coconut macaroon, or congolais, as it's known in France, is frequently served during Passover because it contains no flour.
