Everything You'll Ever Need to Know About Going Platinum Blonde

The night before my first appointment at Sally Hershberger Downtown, I examined my dark mane closer than I ever have in all my years as an Asian (that's a lot of years). The way the small lamp on my nightstand bounced off my crown, creating a half-circle glow that starkly contrasted with my black hair, like a halo above my visage, almost moved me to tears. Was I getting cold feet? Maybe. Was I being dramatic? If you say so. But what was certain was that I was going to miss my natural hair color. We'd never been apart from each other before (aside from a failed at-home bleaching attempt at age 13), not even for a Clairol Summer fling.
Luckily, the trepidatious moment was fleeting and I quickly remembered my mission. I was going to become a completely different person the next day. Tomorrow, I would start my two-session transformation from a regular ol' Asian to a platinum blonde one, which, barring cosmetic surgery, is probably the most dramatic change an Asian girl can make. Sure, only my hair was being overhauled, but it does make up about 40 percent of me.
Since childhood, I've marveled at the likes of Debbie Harry, then Courtney Love, followed by perennial platinum Gwen Stefani, and most recently Sky Ferreira. I've been coveting their punk-inspired, white-blonde manes as something I could only ever dream about, but never have. But as hair technology continued to advance, something miraculous happened: Asian women, who for the most part had only been able to go orange, started to go platinum successfully.
Models Soo Joo Park, Ai Tominaga, and Daul Kim (RIP) set a new bar in the fashion industry by going platinum. Fashion host Amy Pham helped introduce the look to a more mainstream audience, and now throngs of regular Asian girls who had similar dreams of experiencing the yin to their hair yang are following suit. And I was next in line. As quickly as it came, my apprehension evaporated and once again I was eager to finally fulfill a lifelong dream. Only one more night of sleep stood in my way.
Having said all that, going from black to platinum is no joke. It is a serious process. When I met with my brilliant, sweet, devastatingly handsome colorist, Daniel Sanchez (who has worked on Karlie Kloss's mane) at Sally Hershberger for our consultation, he immediately assessed that making my hair platinum would take two sessions and at least eight hours.
After experiencing what ended up being 15 hours total in the salon chair, I can say with confidence that the longer the process, the better the results. Unless you want your hair to go into shock and become straw or, even worse, fall out in clumps, you'll want your colorist to take his or her time and go as gently as possible on your strands. So, armed with my cell phone charger and a pantry of snacks (crackers, pretzels, hummus, beef jerky, and Kind bars), I ventured to Sally Hershberger the next day poised and ready to go platinum.
If you, too, are considering stepping into the light, but are still trepidatious of the process, keep reading to discover exactly what to expect during a black-to-platinum hair color transformation.
11 Dolls That Look Nothing Like Your Childhood Barbie

Dressing up and beautifying our beloved dolls was a huge part of our childhood. While we learned how to primp and pamper from our toys, that devotion to Barbie taught us a lot about society's strict beauty standards (blond hair, blue eyes, hourglass frame). Luckily, a lot has changed since our youth! Not only have we realized those goals were completely unrealistic, but so have toy makers. Many of them have decided to toss the unattainable beauty standards and give dolls a real-girl makeover - something that older women can appreciate and young girls of all shapes, sizes, and colors can truly look up to. When it comes to everything from stretch marks to finally being able to kick off those stiletto heels, these dolls are giving the world something real to play with!
Sweet Success: 10 Tips For Baking the Perfect Macaron
With their vibrant colors and lacy frills, dainty, crisp-crusted French macarons are the perfect Valentine's Day baking project. But these lovely little delicacies are temperamental enough to stump even the most accomplished chefs. Even if you follow a detailed recipe down to the letter, a batch of macarons can go very wrong very quickly. Thanks to humidity, an unreliable oven temperature gauge, or an overly enthusiastic stirring hand, you may find yourself facing macaron-ageddon rather than baking bliss. But before you throw in the tea towel, we've assembled a few tips to solve your sugary conundrums.
5 Eating Habits to Kick to the Curb in 2016
As much as you may be committed to your health and fitness, it's easy to get a little lazy about eating well, especially around the holidays. Who wants to say no to all the sweets, all the time? Not me! But with the New Year almost here and bathing suit season coming soon, (Memorial Day is only five months away!), perhaps we need to give ourselves a swift kick in the butt and kick these five poor eating habits to curb along with all our other baggage from 2015!
1. No Breakfast
I don't care if you're not a breakfast person. Get hungry! Eating small, frequent meals will rev up your metabolism. If you wait until lunch to take your first bite of the day, I bet you any amount of money that you end up eating more than you should. You overeat because your body needed food hours before your brain started sending hunger signals. Once you create the habit of starting your day with a small breakfast, your brain will begin to send more regular signals you need to pull out a fork or spoon in the a.m.
Think: high-protein whole-grain oatmeal, egg-whites, turkey bacon, whole-grain toast, fruit, and more for your brand-new breakfast habit. Eating on the go? A protein bar is better than nothing.
2. Lack of Protein
Yes, fruits and veggies are low in calories and good for you, but a lack of protein means your stomach will get hungrier faster!
Learn from me: every time I start the day with cereal and skip the protein, an hour later I am both hungry and exhausted. Complex carbs are amazing so do eat those, but simple carbs and low-calorie fruit won't tide you over.
If you're a vegetarian, invest in high-protein grains, beans, tofu, and cheese - if your diet includes dairy.
3. Watch Your Snacking
Are you really hungry at your desk or do you just need something to do while you work at the computer?
Watch how often you snack and what you're snacking on. A whole bag of pretzels is a whole bag - even if you think they're healthy! Nuts, fruits, carrots, and other veggies with hummus, or crackers with peanut butter are all good mid-day snacks. That's right. Throw a little protein into your snack.
4. Sip Less Starbucks
A little caffeine is not a big deal but typically these tasty drinks are loaded with syrups and milk: high in both sugar and calorie counts! You may think, "Well, I'm only drinking this," but a calorie is a calorie whether you sip it or chew it. Cut down on the milk and flavored syrups if you need your coffee or daily cup of tea.
5. Late-Night Dinners
If I eat late, I eat like a football player when really I'm simply a petite mom. When I'm tired and famished, I whip out the pasta, the cheese, and every other savory item my hormones and fatigued body have told me I deserve. Problem is, I end up feeling like a Macy's Thanksgivig Day parade balloon after my after-hours dinner.
Pay attention to the clock and don't eat dinner too late when you're tired, feeling lazy, and so hungry that you will eat anything and everything in your path. Just try to plan ahead a little.
And One Last Thing to Remember
No one is perfect and life is meant to be enjoyed. Pick a small daily sweet or savory treat to enjoy and relish in one solid cheat day per week - this way you can enjoy a moderate diet and feel healthy and fit while doing it.
2016 is a brand new year and it's a great time to banish the bad eating habits and bring in the good. Set reasonable goals for yourself and never leave your home empty handed - always have a snack on hand. Almonds, anyone? Remember: you're not you when you're hungry, so plan ahead!
Happy New Year!

6 Signs Your Weight-Loss Plan Isn't Working For You

If you feel like your current diet isn't making you healthier, our friends at Shape consulted creator of the Insanity Workout and host of ABC's My Diet Is Better Than Yours to help you make the switch at the right time.
With his professional-like intensity (or should we say insanity?), Shaun T proves that hard work creates rock-hard results. And now, he's helping people clean up their diets, as the host of ABC's My Diet Is Better Than Yours, which premieres tonight at 9 p.m. EST.
The show pairs contestants with expert trainers who introduce the weight-loss hopefuls to their signature diet and exercise plans. Contestants are challenged to meet fitness milestones along the way, and unlike weight-loss shows before it, My Diet Is Better Than Yours puts the power of elimination in the contestants' hands too. Trainers can be eliminated at any time, ultimately leaving one teacher-student pair victorious at the end. "It's a new twist that I love," says Shaun T. People are finally empowered to find the weight loss plan that works for them. (Have you tried Shaun's 10-Minute Tighten and Tone Circuit?)
Although Shaun T says he encourages contestants to dedicate themselves to their plan - "it takes time for anything to work and show results," he says - finding the best diet for you can definitely take some trial and error.
Here, Shaun T shares some warning signs that your diet could be doing more harm than good - or at very least, flat out isn't working. (And watch out for these 16 Diet Plan Pitfalls That Can Easily Be Prevented.)
You hate the food: Eating should be an enjoyable experience! You'll never stick with a diet you dislike.
You're bloated: If the foods on a diet plan are causing inflammation, stomach aches, bloat, or any other GI reactions, it's not worth it.
You're exhausted: If you're feeling tired and sluggish for more than a week, the food you're eating isn't supplying you with enough energy to support your health (let alone a tough workout). Next!
You're irritable: If you're experiencing constant mood swings, it could mean that food choices or portion size is off.
You aren't losing weight: If you haven't dropped even one pound within the first 10 days, something's up. Substantial changes to your diet should show some changes (even minimally) by then.
You're starving: If your diet is restrictive to less than 1,200 calories, and you're hungry. (Cue crankiness and fatigue.) You need nutrients from food to perform everyday tasks, and not eating enough can set you up for internal and external injury. Major don't.

Ariana Grande's MAC Viva Glam Lipstick Shade Will Surprise You

Move over, Miley Cyrus! MAC Cosmetics unveiled its newest Viva Glam spokeswoman on its Periscope account, and it's ponytailed pop songstress Ariana Grande. She's a perfect choice - the talented musician's fame has skyrocketed since her single "Bang Bang" came out last Summer.
Though most stars typically choose matching lipstick and Lipglass hues, Ariana surprised us. She selected a dark-plum lipstick ("to represent the bad girl in you") with a sugary pale-pink gloss, which is meant to represent your inner good girl. "I think you should be able to play up both sides!" Ariana declared.
If you're worried about spending money so soon after the holidays, don't. The star reminded us that it's "guilt-free shopping." One-hundred percent of the proceeds from her collection goes to the MAC AIDS Fund. Founded in 1994, the organization is committed to addressing the link between poverty and HIV/AIDS by supporting diverse organizations around the world. So far, MAC has raised over $380 million with its Viva Glam campaigns, and we're positive Ariana's lip shades will be responsible for many donations. Keep reading to shop the gorgeous shades!
Even Clumsy Nail Artists Can Master This Valentine's Day Manicure

As entranced as we might be by nail art tutorials, we always have the same nagging feeling when we watch them: even if we had the help of two more hands, our finished look would still look like a mess. Valentine's Day is coming up, so we'd really like to charm our date with fancy fingers instead of horrifying him with clumsy creations. That's why we're so into this DIY from YouTube user cutepolish - it celebrates the average skill level of the at-home manicurist.
Instead of trying and failing to paint tiny hearts all over your talons, this video suggests slicking on three different shades, then adding polka dots and the word "LOVE" for a fun detail. It's OK if you're a little sloppy! "No worries about doing this on your other hand," cutepolish says in a soothing voice. "You could always just swap it for pinstripes, which will look really cute." Watch the video for proof.
1D Fans Are Losing Their Chill Over Niall Horan's Hair Color

Our favorite singing heartthrobs have been busy switching up their strands lately. First, Justin Bieber sported platinum side bangs and controversial cornrows. Zayn Malik added blond ombré tips to his jet-black mohawk. And now, his former bandmate Niall Horan has the Internet losing their chill over his hair.
Here's the deal: Niall (the only blond in One Direction) was born with naturally brown locks. He was recently spotted out with a darker mane, which he carefully tried to hide under a baseball cap (sneaky, Niall). Fans caught the change in his appearance and took to Twitter to express their excitement with the hashtag #brunetteniall.
The band is currently on a hiatus, and many 1Ders were hoping that Niall would ditch the blond and return from the break embracing his natural hair color. While his darker locks might just be an illusion caused by poor lighting, we think that Niall may have very well granted his fans' wishes. Keep reading to determine for yourself and to see the funny fan reactions.
15 Foods to Help You Sleep

If you rely on sleeping pills for a good night's sleep, take note: a recent study found that those who took sleeping aids like Ambien and Lunesta had a higher risk of dying sooner or developing cancer. While the jury's still out on whether the study found merely a correlation between being sick and taking sleeping pills (rather than the medication being the cause of the early deaths), why not play it safe with a natural fix? If you're a restless sleeper, try eating any of these foods a few hours before bedtime and be ready for a personal visit from Mr. Sandman.

Kylie Jenner Just Revealed the Newest Lip Kit Color - and It's Not Nude

If you were as devastated as we were by failing to snag Kylie Jenner's sold-out lip kits last year, don't worry - there is still hope. The teen star took to her Instagram account to reveal that she would be launching three (!!!) brand-new shades just in time for Valentine's Day. She also shared one of the upcoming hues.
Kylie had recently teased the new colors of her product, but they were filtered in black and white so fans couldn't figure out the exact tones. We had assumed that she'd pick a new crop of nudes, but we're excited to report that the first color is a delicate rose. (Could it be that she's wearing it in this picture?) Read on to learn more.

3 Ways to Revive Leftover Rice

Even 12 hours of refrigeration will dehydrate rice, leaving it tough, dry, and sticky. There are a few quick methods of reviving it, so it tastes almost as fluffy and light as the day it was made. No matter what your method of preparation, oil and a little liquid are the keys to helping rice retain its moisture and clump-free texture.
- Reheat it in the microwave: For every cup of rice, add a few tablespoons of broth or water. Cover the bowl of rice with plastic wrap or another bowl to create a steaming effect as it reheats.
- Stir-fry it: In a large wok or sauté pan, heat canola or peanut oil on high. Make a fried rice, breaking up the lumps of rice with a wooden spoon so the oil coats the granules evenly.
- Stove-top steam it: In a sauce pan, add the rice with a few tablespoons of butter and a splash of broth or water. Cover the pan and steam the rice on a low flame. Stir occasionally until the rice is heated thoroughly.

Gemstone Skin Care: What It Is and What You Should Try

Diamonds are a girl's best friend . . . and now, so are amethysts, sapphires, and a slew of other gemstones. Gemstones are going well beyond jewelry right now, as beauty brands are increasingly turning to materials like rose quartz and tourmaline to enhance their skin-care creams, cleansers, scrubs, and serums.
Kristin Petrovich, who co-founded Sjal with her mother Karen, is once such devotee of gemstone-infused beauty. Sjal's skin-care offerings rely heavily on trace minerals as well as gemstones because, as she explains, their high vibration levels bring energy and harmony to the skin.
"Everything has a frequency or energy level to it," Petrovich says. "Gemstones and minerals naturally vibrate at a higher frequency so that are able to penetrate into the skin and work on microcirculation. They resonate with us. We resonate with them. They work to help harmonize skin. Things like gold and silver are natural antimicrobials and antibacterials. Each gemstone has something different to it."
Take Sjal's Balans Deep Pore Cleanser. According to Petrovich, the gold and silver colloidals within "break down and emulsify" makeup around the eye area without stripping the skin. A pearl extract brightens the complexion, and gemstones help support antioxidants while boosting circulation and energy levels.
Other products use gemstone extracts and powders to exfoliate the skin. A gemstone facial, or treatment in which gemstones are placed at certain chakras to clear the energy, can maximize results, Petrovich says.
Ultimately, it boils down to energy and frequency, and harnessing that to benefit the skin.
"What we want to do with the gemstones in our products is to have the vibrational aspects, clarity, and energy to enhance our own personal energy," says Petrovich.
Feeling tempted? Try out these gemstone beauty buys.
