Don't Miss Out on the 21 Most Overlooked Tax Deductions
When doing your taxes this year, Kiplinger advises us not to overlook these tax deductions.
Years ago, the fellow who was running the IRS at the time told Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine that he figured millions of taxpayers overpaid their taxes every year by overlooking just one of the money-savers listed here.
1. State sales taxes
You may hear that this tax break expired . . . which it does regularly, only to be just as regularly revived by Congress.
That's exactly what happened for purposes of 2015 returns. The break expired at the end of 2014 and then was revived retroactively in December 2015 to cover 2015 returns. But this time, Congress actually found the courage to make this break permanent. This is particularly important to you if you live in a state that does not impose a state income tax. You see, Congress offers itemizers the choice between deducting the state income taxes or state sales taxes they paid. You choose whichever gives you the largest deduction. So if your state doesn't have an income tax, the sales tax write-off is clearly the way to go.
In some cases, even filers who pay state income taxes can come out ahead with the sales tax choice. The IRS has tables that show how much residents of various states can deduct, based on their income and state and local sales tax rates. But the tables aren't the last word. If you purchased a vehicle, boat or airplane, you may add the sales tax you paid on that big-ticket item to the amount shown in the IRS table for your state. The IRS even has an online calculator that shows how much residents of various states can deduct, based on their income and state and local sales tax rates.
2. Reinvested dividends
This isn't a tax deduction, but it is an important subtraction that can save you a bundle. And this is the one that former IRS commissioner Fred Goldberg told Kiplinger millions of taxpayers miss . . . costing them millions in overpaid taxes.
If, like most investors, you have mutual fund dividends automatically used to buy extra shares, remember that each reinvestment increases your tax basis in the fund. That, in turn, reduces the taxable capital gain (or increases the tax-saving loss) when you redeem shares. Forgetting to include reinvested dividends in your basis results in double taxation of the dividends - once in the year when they were paid out and immediately reinvested and later when they're included in the proceeds of the sale.
Don't make that costly mistake.
If you're not sure what your basis is, ask the fund for help. Funds often report to investors the tax basis of shares redeemed during the year. In fact, for the sale of shares purchased in 2012 and later years, funds must report the basis to investors and to the IRS.
3. Out-of-pocket charitable contributions
It's hard to overlook the big charitable gifts you made during the year, by check or payroll deduction (check your December pay stub).
But little things add up, too, and you can write off out-of-pocket costs incurred while doing work for a charity. For example, ingredients for casseroles you prepare for a nonprofit organization's soup kitchen and stamps you buy for a school's fund-raising mailing count as charitable contributions. Keep your receipts. If your contribution totals more than $250, you'll also need an acknowledgement from the charity documenting the support you provided. If you drove your car for charity in 2015, remember to deduct 14 cents per mile, plus parking and tolls paid, in your philanthropic journeys.
4. Student-loan interest paid by Mom and Dad
Generally, you can deduct interest only if you are legally required to repay the debt. But if parents pay back a child's student loans, the IRS treats the transactions as if the money were given to the child, who then paid the debt. So as long as the child is no longer claimed as a dependent, he or she can deduct up to $2,500 of student-loan interest paid by Mom and Dad each year. And he or she doesn't have to itemize to use this money-saver. (Mom and Dad can't claim the interest deduction even though they actually foot the bill because they are not liable for the debt.)
5. Job-hunting costs
If you're among the millions of unemployed Americans who were looking for a job in 2015, we hope you were successful . . . and that you kept track of your job-search expenses or can reconstruct them. If you were looking for a position in the same line of work as your current or most recent job, you can deduct job-hunting costs as miscellaneous expenses if you itemize. Qualifying expenses can be written off even if you didn't land a new job. But such expenses can be deducted only to the extent that your total miscellaneous expenses exceed 2 percent of your adjusted gross income. (Job-hunting expenses incurred while looking for your first job don't qualify.) Deductible costs include, but aren't limited to:
- Transportation expenses incurred as part of the job search, including 57.5 cents a mile for driving your own car plus parking and tolls
- Food and lodging expenses if your search takes you away from home overnight
- Cab fares
- Employment agency fees
- Costs of printing résumés, business cards, postage, and advertising.
6. Moving expsenses to get to your first job
Although job-hunting expenses are not deductible when looking for your first job, moving expenses to get to that job are. And you get this write-off even if you don't itemize. To qualify for the deduction, your first job must be at least 50 miles away from your old home. If you qualify, you can deduct the cost of getting yourself and your household goods to the new area. If you drove your own car on a 2015 move, deduct 23 cents a mile, plus what you paid for parking and tolls. For a full list of deductible expenses, check out IRS Publication 521.
7. Military reservists' travel expenses
Members of the National Guard or military reserve may write off the cost of travel to drills or meetings. To qualify, you must travel more than 100 miles from home and be away from home overnight. If you qualify, you can deduct the cost of lodging and half the cost of your meals, plus an allowance for driving your own car to get to and from drills. For 2015 travel, the rate is 57.5 cents a mile, plus what you paid for parking fees and tolls. You may claim this deduction even if you use the standard deduction rather than itemizing.
8. Deduction of Medicare premiums for the self-employed
Folks who continue to run their own businesses after qualifying for Medicare can deduct the premiums they pay for Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D, plus the cost of supplemental Medicare (medigap) policies or the cost of a Medicare Advantage plan. This deduction is available whether or not you itemize and is not subject to the 7.5 percent of AGI test that applies to itemized medical expenses for those age 65 and older. One caveat: you can't claim this deduction if you are eligible to be covered under an employer-subsidized health plan offered by either your employer (if you have a job as well as your business) or your spouse's employer (if he or she has a job that offers family medical coverage).
9. Child care credit
A credit is so much better than a deduction; it reduces your tax bill dollar for dollar. So missing one is even more painful than missing a deduction that simply reduces the amount of income that's subject to tax. In the 25 percent bracket, each dollar of deductions is worth a quarter; each dollar of credits is worth a greenback.
You can qualify for a tax credit worth between 20 percent and 35 percent of what you pay for child care while you work. But if your boss offers a child care reimbursement account-which allows you to pay for the child care with pretax dollars - that's likely to be an even better deal. If you qualify for a 20 percent credit but are in the 25 percent tax bracket, for example, the reimbursement plan is the way to go. (In any case, only amounts paid for the care of children younger than age 13 count.)
You can't double dip. Expenses paid through a plan can't also be used to generate the tax credit. But get this: Although only $5,000 in expenses can be paid through a tax-favored reimbursement account, up to $6,000 for the care of two or more children can qualify for the credit. So if you run the maximum through a plan at work but spend even more for work-related child care, you can claim the credit on as much as $1,000 of additional expenses. That would cut your tax bill by at least $200.
10. Estate tax on income in respect of a decedent
This sounds complicated, but it can save you a lot of money if you inherited an IRA from someone whose estate was big enough to be subject to the federal estate tax.
Basically, you get an income-tax deduction for the amount of estate tax paid on the IRA assets you received. Let's say you inherited a $100,000 IRA, and the fact that the money was included in your benefactor's estate added $40,000 to the estate-tax bill. You get to deduct that $40,000 on your tax returns as you withdraw the money from the IRA. If you withdraw $50,000 in one year, for example, you get to claim a $20,000 itemized deduction on Schedule A. That would save you $5,600 in the 28 percent bracket.
11. State tax paid last Spring
Did you owe tax when you filed your 2014 state income tax return in the spring of 2015? Then, for goodness' sake, remember to include that amount in your state-tax deduction on your 2015 federal return, along with state income taxes withheld from your paychecks or paid via quarterly estimated payments during the year.
12. Refinancing points
When you buy a house, you get to deduct in one fell swoop the points paid to get your mortgage. When you refinance, though, you have to deduct the points on the new loan over the life of that loan. That means you can deduct 1/30th of the points a year if it's a 30-year mortgage. That's $33 a year for each $1,000 of points you paid - not much, maybe, but don't throw it away.
Even more important, in the year you pay off the loan - because you sell the house or refinance again - you get to deduct all as-yet-undeducted points. There's one exception to this sweet rule: If you refinance a refinanced loan with the same lender, you add the points paid on the latest deal to the leftovers from the previous refinancing, then deduct that amount gradually over the life of the new loan. A pain? Yes, but at least you'll be compensated for the hassle.
13. Jury pay turned over to your employer
Many employers continue to pay employees' full salary while they serve on jury duty, and some impose a quid pro quo: The employees have to turn over their jury pay to the company coffers. The only problem is that the IRS demands that you report those jury fees as taxable income. To even things out, you get to deduct the amount you give to your employer.
But how do you do it? There's no line on the Form 1040 labeled "jury fees." Instead, the write-off goes on line 36, which purports to be for simply totaling up deductions that get their own lines. Include your jury fees with your other write-offs and write "jury pay" on the dotted line.
14. American Opportunity Credit
Unlike the Hope Credit that this one replaced, the American Opportunity Credit is good for all four years of college, not just the first two. Don't shortchange yourself by missing this critical difference. This tax credit is based on 100 percent of the first $2,000 spent on qualifying college expenses and 25 percent of the next $2,000 . . . for a maximum annual credit per student of $2,500. The full credit is available to individuals whose modified adjusted gross income is $80,000 or less ($160,000 or less for married couples filing a joint return). The credit is phased out for taxpayers with incomes above those levels. If the credit exceeds your tax liability, it can trigger a refund. (Most credits are "nonrefundable," meaning they can reduce your tax to $0, but not get you a check from the IRS.) This credit was scheduled to revert to the less-valuable Hope Credit limits in 2018, but in 2015, Congress made the better-for-you American Opportunity Credit permanent.
15. A college credit for those long out of college
College credits aren't just for youngsters, nor are they limited to just the first four years of college. The Lifetime Learning credit can be claimed for any number of years and can be used to offset the cost of higher education for yourself or your spouse . . . not just for your children.
The credit is worth up to $2,000 a year, based on 20 percent of up to $10,000 you spend for post-high-school courses that lead to new or improved job skills. Classes you take even in retirement at a vocational school or community college can count. If you brushed up on skills in 2015, this credit can help pay the bills. The right to claim this tax-saver phases out as income rises from $55,000 to $65,000 on an individual return and from $110,000 to $130,000 for couples filing jointly.
16. Deduct those blasted baggage fees
Airlines seem to revel in driving travelers batty with extra fees for baggage, online booking and for changing travel plans. Such fees add up to billions of dollars each year. If you get burned, maybe Uncle Sam will help ease the pain. If you're self-employed and travelling on business, be sure to add those costs to your deductible travel expenses.
17. Credits for energy-saving home improvements
There's no longer a tax credit to encourage homeowners to save energy by, for example, installing storm windows and insulation. But the law still offers a powerful incentive for those who install qualified residential alternative energy equipment, such as solar hot water heaters, geothermal heat pumps and wind turbines. Your credit can be 30 percent of the total cost (including labor) of such systems installed through 2016.
18. Additional bonus depreciation
Business owners - including those who run businesses out of their homes - have to stay on their toes to capture tax breaks for buying new equipment. The rules seem to be constantly shifting as Congress writes incentives into the law and then allows them to expire or to be cut back to save money. Take "bonus depreciation" as an example. Back in 2011, rather than write off the cost of new equipment over many years, a business could use 100 percent bonus depreciation to deduct the full cost in the year the equipment was put into service. For 2013, the bonus depreciate rate was 50 percent. The break expired at the end of 2013 and stayed expired until the end of 2014 . . . when Congress reinstated it retroactively to cover 2014 purchases. (That reprieve ended on Dec. 31, when the provision expired again . . . but near the end of 2015, Congress revived the break.) The 50 percent bonus applies for property purchased in 2016 and 2017, too; the bonus drops to 40 percent in 2018 and 30 percent in 2019.
Perhaps even more valuable, though, is another break: supercharged "expensing," which basically lets you write off the full cost of qualifying assets in the year you put them into service. This break, too, has a habit of coming and going. But as part of the 2015 tax law, Congress made the expansion of expensive permanent. For 2015 future years, business can expense up to $500,000 worth of assets. The half million dollar cap phases out dollar for dollar for firms that put more than $2 million worth of assets into service in a single year.
19. Break on the sale of demutualized stock
In 2015, the IRS found another court that agrees with its tough stand on the issue of demutualized stock. That's stock that a life insurance policyholder receives when the insurer switches from being a mutual company owned by policyholders to a stock company owned by shareholders. The IRS's longstanding position is that such stock has no tax basis, so that when the shares are sold, the taxpayer owes tax on 100 percent of the proceeds. In 2009 and again in 2011, federal courts sided with taxpayers who challenged the IRS position. Late in 2015, though, a divided federal appellate court ruled in favor of the IRS. Sooner or later, the Supreme Court may have to settle things.
In the meantime, if you sold stock in 2015 that you received in a demutualization, you have a couple of choices. Claim a basis and, if the IRS rejects your position, file an appeal. Or use a zero basis, pay the tax on the full proceeds of the sale and then file a "protective refund claim" to maintain your right to a refund if the matter is eventually settled in your favor.
20. Social Security taxes you pay
This doesn't work for employees. You can't deduct the 7.65 percent of pay that's siphoned off for Social Security and Medicare. But if you're self-employed and have to pay the full 15.3 percent tax yourself (instead of splitting it 50-50 with an employer), you do get to write off half of what you pay. That deduction comes on the face of Form 1040, so you don't have to itemize to take advantage of it.
21. Waiver of Penalty For the Newly Retired
This isn't a deduction, but it can save you money if it protects you from a penalty. Because our tax system operates on a pay-as-you earn basis, taxpayers typically must pay 90 percent of what they owe during the year via withholding or estimated tax payments. If you don't, and you owe more than $1,000 when you file your return, you can be hit with a penalty for underpayment of taxes. The penalty works like interest on a loan - as though you borrowed from the IRS the money you didn't pay. The current rate is 3 percent.
There are several exceptions to the penalty, including a little-known one that can protect taxpayers age 62 and older in the year they retire and the following year. You can request a waiver of the penalty - using Form 2210 - if you have reasonable cause, such as not realizing you had to shift to estimated tax payments after a lifetime of meeting your obligation via withholding from your paychecks.

Brighten Clothes With This Awesome Dry Laundry Booster
Brighten dingy laundry with this homemade eco-friendly dry laundry booster. Instead of paying for commercial brands, you can easily make your own with basic ingredients found at any grocery store. And once you pick up the basic ingredients, each batch costs pennies to make. Keep your all-natural booster contained in a small jar so it is handy - and seriously potent - when you're doing laundry.
What You'll Need:
- 2 cups washing soda
- 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
- Mixing bowl
- Fork
- Small container
Directions:
- Think of laundry booster as your detergent's best friend. Using washing soda really amps up this laundry helper, while hydrogen peroxide works together with your detergent to help clean your garments.
- Measure and add the washing soda to a mixing bowl, and then add the hydrogen peroxide. Gently stir with a fork.
- Use the fork to break up any lumps, creating a sand-like texture. When the mixture interacts with water, it creates bubbles of oxygen, which help lift tough stains and gently whiten whites.
- Pour the booster into a small container with a lid, and you're all set for tackling the laundry.
- For tough stains and dingy whites, soak clothes in warm water mixed with 1/4 cup of the laundry booster for 20 minutes or overnight before washing. And you can keep things all natural and make your own homemade eco-friendly liquid laundry detergent. In a rush? Simply add 1/4 cup of booster directly to your next load of laundry to give your detergent a bit of a kick.

The 1 Thing You Should Always Do After a Marathon
I started running less than two years ago, and this past month, I signed up for my fourth half-marathon, which is helping me build courage (and strength!) for my first full marathon. Those first three races helped me learn so much about the training process, tips, tricks, gear, and recovery.
The best tip I ever received? Schedule a massage within a few days following your race.
Related: The Best Foam Rollers to Roll Away the Pain
There's a bit of debate over the window, some saying 24 to 48 hours, others saying three to five days - I personally follow the one-to-two-days rule. Whatever time frame works for you, just make sure you're getting that massage no later than a week after your big run.
It is so imperative that you care for your muscles and focus on postrace recovery as diligently as you focused on your prerace training. The race might be over in your mind, but your muscles haven't gotten the memo - let them down easy with extra hydration, electrolytes galore, a recovery beverage or shake, and most importantly, some massage therapy.
You probably don't need much convincing to schedule an indulgent, relaxing massage, but just in case, here are the benefits of a postrace massage:
- Reduced soreness (none of that "OMG, I'M SO SORE" the next few days).
- Increased circulation and blood flow to muscles.
- Promoted muscular healing.
- Injury prevention.
- Range of motion increased (no stiffness, no "I can't walk").
All of this adds up to one thing: you can keep doing what you love, with less pain.

This Mason-Jar Hack Will Get You Barista-Worthy Coffee at Home
I'll take any time- and money-saving way to get even better coffee in the morning, so I knew I wanted to try this DIY frothy milk from Spoon University. The trick to getting barista-worthy foam on top of your brewed coffee at home? A mason jar and a microwave.
It took a few tries to get this hack right, but here's what you need to know to do this at home:
First, fill a mason jar about halfway with milk (I used reduced fat). Meanwhile, get your coffee brewing.
Next, put the lid on the jar and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds, until the milk becomes bubbly and somewhat frothy. Then, (without the lid!), microwave on high for 45 seconds to 1 minute, depending on how hot you want it. This will warm the milk through and create a top layer of foam that you can scoop out and put on top of your cup of coffee.
While this won't be the most perfect foam, it's plenty good enough to get you through busy mornings when you want to upgrade your caffeine routine (more time for sleeping, amirite?).
Adele May Not Be Nominated For a Grammy, But She's Still Owning This Year's Show
It should come as no surprise that Adele looked phenomenal at the Grammy Awards on Monday night in LA. The world-renowned pop star positively glowed in her signature all-black while she flashed her gorgeous smile and posed for pictures. Adele actually isn't on this year's nominee list, only because 25 missed the official Grammy cut-off date by a couple months. That said, she's blessing us all with a performance tonight, and it'll only stir more excitement for her inevitable domination next year. Read on for more pictures from her evening, then check out more glamorous looks from the Grammys red carpet.
3 Ways to Cook Your Go-To Pulse (Chickpeas!)
One of the most versatile pulses out there, chickpeas are one of our favorite ways to bulk up dips, salads, and soups, even pasta. While in most cases canned chickpeas will do the trick, we prefer to cook them from scratch as beans cooked this way have a better texture and flavor, and are more economical. Outlined below are three ways to cook chickpeas, depending on how much time you have and what equipment you have on hand. Do note that as with any dried bean, the cooking times are approximate and wide-ranging, as it'll vary from batch to batch, depending on how fresh your dried beans are.
- In a slow cooker: This low and slow method is our preferred way to cook chickpeas and other beans as it's pretty much foolproof and yields tender beans without risk of blowouts. Rinse and pick over 1 pound of dried chickpeas before adding them to the slow cooker with 2 teaspoons of kosher salt, a couple cloves of peeled garlic, and a bay leaf. Cover with 1-2 inches of water (err on the side of more if you won't be able to check on the beans as they cook) and cook on low for 6-8 hours. (If the water level gets low, add more.) When the beans are nearly, but not completely, cooked through (after 5-7 hours of simmering), add 2 more teaspoons of kosher salt and cook until tender.
- In a pressure cooker: Chickpeas cook particularly well in a pressure cooker as they are near-spherical and cook evenly even when heated rapidly. That is, with one caveat: it's best to soak chickpeas before cooking them this way, as the short time won't otherwise allow for even absorption of liquid. To cook chickpeas in a pressure cooker, rinse and pick over the beans, add them to a large mixing bowl with 1 tablespoon of kosher salt, and cover with 2 inches of water; soak overnight or up to 24 hours. Once soaked, drain the beans and add them to a pressure cooker with 2 teaspoons of kosher salt, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, and 4 quarts water. (Do not skip the oil; it prevents the liquid from foaming up from the beans' starches.) Cook on your pressure cooker's low setting for 3 minutes, then let the pressure release naturally for about 15 minutes, or until your pressure cooker signals that it's done. Carefully remove the lid and test a few chickpeas for doneness. If they still need to cook further, simmer on the stove until tender. However, if you forget or don't have time to soak the beans, try Alton Brown's method.
- In a dutch oven or stockpot: If you don't have a slow cooker or pressure cooker, rinse and pick over the beans, add them to a large mixing bowl with 1 tablespoon of kosher salt, and cover with 2 inches of water and soak for at least 2 hours, though 8-10 is better. Once soaked, drain the beans and add them to a dutch oven or stockpot with 2 teaspoons of kosher salt, a few peeled garlic cloves, a bay leaf, and enough water to cover the beans by an inch. Bring to a boil, boil for 5 minutes, and then reduce to a bare simmer; simmer for 1-3 hours, or until tender.

In addition to Judd's new project, Leslie is also celebrating her latest film, How to Be Single. This Orangutan's Response to a Woman Breastfeeding at the Zoo Will Make Your Jaw Drop
Ask any woman who's breastfed her baby in public, and she'll tell you that she's gotten plenty of stares. But those glances more than likely came from fellow humans.
For Elizabeth Hunt Burrett, who nursed her baby boy during a trip to the Melbourne Zoo in Australia, her gawker wasn't some middle-aged man mumbling, "That's disgusting!" It was simply an intrigued orangutan.
"My 13-week-old got hungry while we were in the orangutan enclosure, so I took him into a quiet corner away from the crowd to feed," the mom of two wrote on Facebook. "Then this happened . . . This mummy came to investigate, and she watched the whole feed. It was the most beautiful thing!"
The photo shows the female primate sitting right against the glass, hand on head, staring intently at the nursing session in progress.
Burrett recalled that her original plan to breastfeed in a tucked-away corner was quickly dashed.
"Now everyone in Melbourne has a picture of me feeding as once one person saw what was going on, the word spread fast and they flocked to see what was happening," wrote the woman, noting that she received not a single negative comment from onlookers. "I felt like I was on exhibit!"
Yet another thing she and the orangutan have in common.
This Dad's Facebook Post Reminds Men to "Respect the Mother of Your Child"
I sometimes don't give this woman the credit she is due, when I come from work she is always "tired" now it's me who has...
Posted by Tony Emms on Wednesday, January 27, 2016
Stay-at-home moms don't always get the recognition that they deserve - especially in their own households. But one father is realizing just how much his fiancée does and took to Facebook to show his appreciation.
In the post, accompanied by a photo of Charlotte sleeping with their child, Tony writes about how he didn't give her the credit that she's due. "When I come from work she is always 'tired.' Now it's me who has been at work doing stuff all day, but lately I've been thinking what this amazing woman does while I'm out . . . surely she just sits with the baby and watches TV and has a chilled day right? NO is the answer."
Tony went on to point out an important fact that is true for many mothers: When the baby is hungry, he gets fed while Charlotte skips a meal. When the baby is sleepy, he goes down for a nap while his tired fiancée cleans.
"Baby wakes up and is hungry, mummy hasn't had breakfast but she still doesn't eat. She gets baby set for his lunch. After his lunch, he then wants attention and plays . . . remember mummy still hasn't eaten . . . all the cleaning she'd done earlier is now time wasted as baby's toys are everywhere," Tony explained.
Even though Tony is also putting in a ton of effort at work and returns home drained, he wants others to realize that this doesn't negate the exhaustion that Charlotte feels from all that she does.
"Respect the mother of your child. She is a special type of human that has given up everything to bring up your baby," Tony wrote. "I truly love my two sleeping babies and they both deserve their rest."

How to Turn On (or Off) Twitter's New Controversial Feature
Everyone can put the rumors to rest. The company announced that it has indeed rolled out a new algorithm where tweets that are most interesting or useful to you will be at the top of the timeline. Underneath that, you'll see tweets from the accounts you follow in reverse chronological order, just like before.
Not everyone was happy:
I agree that algorithmic Twitter feeds would be bad. The best thing about Twitter is finding and retweeting great but obscure tweets.
- Noah Smith (@Noahpinion) February 7, 2016
According to Twitter, these top tweets are chosen based on the accounts and tweets you engage with the most. Currently, you must turn on the new feature in your account settings, but it will soon become default. Here's how to turn it on or off, depending on your preference.
- For computer users: Go to your account settings page, and under Content, look for Timeline and toggle the box next to where it says "Show me the best tweets first" to change the setting.
- For iOS users: Tap the gear icon on your profile and select Settings. Under Timeline, tap "Timeline personalization." Then, next to "Show me the best tweets first," tap to turn on/off.
- For Andriod users: Hit the overflow icon, tap Settings, then select Timeline, and next to "Show me the best tweets first," check or uncheck the box to turn it on/off.
