15 Easy Ways to Make an Old Home Look Like New

This past weekend, my husband and I moved from the 94-year-old home we've been renting in the Berkeley Hills to a 58-year-old home around the corner. I have always had a soft spot for old homes - the architecture, the charm, the doorknobs! - but they definitely come with their quirks. Love 'em or hate 'em - if you're living in an old house, you know there are some issues to contend with. Read on to find a list of 15 (relatively) quick fixes to make your old home feel new again.

1 Woman's Re-Creations of Celebrity Instagrams Will Make You Laugh Till It Hurts

When celebs Instagram themselves in sweatpants, hair tied, chillin' with no makeup on, their posts usually turn out slightly better different than ours. Now, one Australian comedian named Celeste Barber is turning this unfortunate reality into a hilarious photo series on Instagram by posting snaps of celebs next to her re-creations - all under the hashtag #celestechallengeaccepted.

"People are so obsessed with celebrities and celebrities seem to be so obsessed with portraying everyday people," Barber told Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). "I thought, right, if this is what everyone does - challenge accepted."

Ahead, see her funny comparisons along with the captions as she wrote them.

Why This Controversial Organizing Method Is Exactly What You Need

Letting go of clutter is hard to do. Anyone who has encountered the teachings of Japanese cleaning guru Marie Kondo knows that minimalism is currently all the rage; her housekeeping manual, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has inspired legions of readers to throw away their unneeded belongings - and Marie Kondo's newest book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up is in January's POPSUGAR Must Have Box, which you can buy here! We love all things related to organization and have to admit to clearing out our drawers and closets in a fit of aspirational tidying ourselves.

Not everyone, though, is on board with KonMari, the nickname Kondo gave her techniques. As with any good trend, there's a corresponding backlash. Back in May, a writer for The New York Times extolled the virtues of living a life surrounded by things in an article called "Let's Celebrate the Art of Clutter."

Whether you're pro- or anticlutter, you must admit there's a certain calmness to be found in a well-organized drawer. Read through to see 25 examples of Marie's method at work, and see if you aren't a little inspired to take a turn at organizing your own home.

Nate Berkus Has a Pretty Genius Solution to Every Parent's Problem: Toy Clutter

Decorating extraordinaire Nate Berkus has undergone a couple big housing changes lately. He and husband Jeremiah Brent sold their stunning New York apartment and moved to Los Angeles. They also - oh yeah - welcomed a baby daughter named Poppy in early 2015.

As a happy result, Jeremiah and Nate's carefully ordered - and decorated - life has undergone a little bit of upheaval. But Nate's taking everything in stride and is an understandably big proponent of keeping things organized and discarding what you no longer need.

He's teamed up with eBay on a special Spring auction in which he's getting rid of some of his loved but no-longer-needed items. He also spoke to us about his tips on getting tidy and how he and Jeremiah are adapting to life as parents.

  • On keeping his home organized as a new dad: "It's definitely taking much more effort than it used to. I haven't been somebody who lived for many years with any primary-colored plastic in my home. I have now laid down my sword and given up on the fact that our home is now overwhelmed with stuffed animals and primary-colored toys you can ride on."
  • His tricks to organizing toys: "For me, it's not about what's out but what you've got in closets, what you've got in drawers, what you've got stored in containers under the bed. I've given up on the quantity of children's things that have been welcomed into our life with our daughter. I think it's even more important - as a new parent - that our home is organized and edited so we feel better and more effective and more creative. Systematically, of course, all of her things go in baskets, and then they go over and take everything out. At the end of the day when she goes to sleep, everything goes back in."
  • His take on Spring cleaning: "Don't tackle everything in one day. Divide your home into sections: I'm going to go through my closet, I'm going to go through my drawers."
  • On how he's decorating his new Los Angeles home with Jeremiah and Poppy: "The truth is I'm a pretty ruthless editor about what I let in our homes. Jer is pretty good too. There are certain objects and decorations that will always live with us no matter where we go, but we all have too many things. We amass so many things and so much stuff. If I look at something and it's not beautiful and it's not useful and it doesn't have an association with something important, we get rid of it."

This Might Convince You to Make Your Next iPhone Case Out of Legos

It seems like we're on an eternal hunt for the latest, greatest iPhone case . . . but the solution to all of our woes has been under our noses the entire time. When YouTuber TechRax DIYed an iPhone 6S case out of Lego bricks and decided to drop-test it from 100 feet, we were almost positive that the whole situation would end up a disaster - after all, stepping on Legos is some of the worst pain we can think of. But we were pleasantly surprised! Watch the video to see how the Lego case worked out for the device, and it might inspire you to make your own.

The 1 Reason Neville Longbottom Was Actually the Bravest Harry Potter Character

Neville Longbottom could have been The Chosen One, but he wasn't. Instead, Harry took on the weight of the wizarding world, and his acts of bravery proved countless times that he was a true Gryffindor at heart. While Harry's bravery was brash, bold, and apparent to everyone around him, Neville's went more or less unnoticed throughout their years at Hogwarts. But his quiet courage was something else entirely. I've seen this fan theory throughout the years, and I can't help but agree that while Harry, Ron, and Hermione were undeniably brave, Neville Longbottom's particular type of bravery was perhaps the most remarkable of all. Here's the theory.

http://ift.tt/1SCIkmg

Basically, Neville stood before his greatest fear and faced it daily. What's more, he stood up not to his enemies, but to his friends in The Sorcerer's Stone - because he believed it was right. "And then led a resistance against a Snape-led Hogwarts in year seven. He led a group of children (and friends) in a mini-war against his biggest fear," added Redditor TheKyleBaxter.

Then, in what is arguably one of the bravest deeds in the entire Harry Potter series, Neville stood up to Voldemort himself. "This is the moment when Voldemort appears to have won. Harry appears to be dead. There's almost no hope left to win the war for them. And still, Neville continues to defy Voldemort, despite Voldemort's offer to let him join the Death Eaters," SchroedingersKneazle pointed out in a Reddit thread on the subject. It may not be the same kind of bravery Harry had when he knowingly walked into the Forbidden Forest to face Voldemort and to his inevitable death. And it's not the same as the bravery it took Harry to come back to the warring wizarding world and finish it all when he could have gone on to be with those he'd loved and lost.

But Neville's is a different kind of courage that perseveres. Harry's bravery resulted from facing a responsibility that was thrust upon him at birth; Neville's bravery was something he chose to have daily, even if wasn't something that came as naturally to him. Some fans have even said Neville's experience facing Snape is a metaphor for dealing with anxiety and fear of failure, and even more understandably, dealing with fears of facing bullies at school - which many Muggle children deal with everyday as well.

Either way, there's no doubt that Sorting Hat made the right decision when he sorted Neville Longbottom. The hat placed him in Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart, their daring, nerve, and chivalry truly setting them apart.

Drapple Is a Thing All Harry Potter Fans Need to Know About Right F*cking Now

Harry Potter fans are many things. Creative, brilliant, hilarious, and sometimes, we're a little weird. I talked with Tom Felton aka Draco Malfoy at the opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hollywood, and I obviously had to ask him the most important hard-hitting question of all: what's his favorite pair to ship in the Harry Potter world? When he asked me if I knew what "Drapple" was, everything I thought I knew about Harry Potter, Harry Potter fans, the internet, and life in general flew out the window. Basically, Drapple is a romantic relationship pairing that fans ship, or pull for, and it involves Draco Malfoy and an apple. A green one, like the one that started this madness in a scene in Prizoner of Azkaban. I actually felt like a terrible fan for not knowing about this, um, unique ship, which people argue is canon because, OK technically it is.

He does caress one lovingly in The Half-Blood Prince as he pulls it out of the Vanishing Cabinet. And the way he bites into that crisp, juicy fruit in The Prisoner of Azkaban does seem sexy, I guess? Sh*t, I think I've spent too much time in the depths of Tumblr . . . because am I shipping Drapple now too? No, for me, it's Dramione for life. Here's some of the internet's most creative Drapple memes, GIFs, and fan art that may have you weirdly shipping the pair but will definitely have you laughing out loud.

If Disney Characters Were Millennials

The Disney world can be a little too perfect at times, and it's probably because the characters didn't have the Internet to f*ck things up. We've seen Disney princesses in a different light before, but nothing like these comics, first posted on Dorkly, which were created by artist Justin Hall.

The hilarious strip depicts how your favorite Disney characters' lives play out in the digital age that we're all familiar with. Peep the illustrations, but be warned - you may never see them the same way again, especially Andy.

5 Inexpensive Items That Make For Gorgeous Kitchen Backsplashes

The backsplash is by far the most fun design decision during a kitchen remodel - so why settle for standard tile or stone? Instead, turn an everyday collection into an unexpected backsplash display. The design secret here is the multiples: when small graphic items are arranged side by side, the result is a surprisingly cohesive, curated look. The best part? Not only will a DIY backsplash elevate you to Pinterest goddess status, but employing everyday items (instead of expensive marble or tile) will save you major renovation bucks, too. Win-win? We think so.

Read on for our favorite DIY kitchen backsplash ideas, and be sure to ask your local hardware store for installation tips before trying it at home.

Wine Corks

Memorialize your favorite Merlot by adhering the corks to a wet bar's backsplash in alternating horizontal and vertical pairs. Use the DIY project as an excuse to drink more vino (we won't tell anyone), or simply purchase used wine corks online. They're easy to find and usually super inexpensive.

Dominoes

Get your kitchen's game face on with dominoes. The classic black and white game pieces add a decidedly sophisticated touch when arranged in rows. Complement the look with the latest kitchen trend: dark gray cabinets and warm brass hardware.

Bottle Caps

Bottle caps, which look like colorful penny tile from afar, are right at home in the kitchen. Choose a color theme - only blue bottle caps, for example - or include all hues for the ultimate vibrant look. Enlist friends to collect, or buy bottle caps in bulk from Etsy sellers, like TorBearNC.

Coasters

Bar and restaurant coasters, bursting with fun fonts and graphic treatments, are an inexpensive way to replicate the look of ceramic tile but with an unexpected twist. Make a point to collect the coasters during travels, and you'll create a memory-filled scrapbook for your walls. Simply arrange the coasters as if you would square tiles and then cover them with a large glass plate for protection against cooking oils.

Plates

Channel your inner Antoni Gaudí and design a mosaic backsplash using smashed dinner plates and platters. Vintage varieties are a dime a dozen at antique stores and flea markets, usually costing a mere few dollars each. Pile the dinnerware in a cloth bag (to avoid flying pieces) before breaking them with a hammer. Then glue the roughly one-inch pieces to your walls in a pattern or at random.

Here's How Every New Peanut M&M's Flavor Really Tastes

As soon as we heard M&M's released three new peanut flavors, we got our hands on them immediately. Only one flavor will remain on shelves for good, so we conducted a very official office-wide taste test to help determine which one we hope wins the Flavor Vote contest. Here's what you should know before you pick these up for yourself:

Coffee Nut

Coffee-lovers were obviously excited about this flavor, and while the chocolate-coffee M&M's are undoubtedly tasty (I could eat a whole bag), the coffee flavor isn't nearly as strong as I'd hoped.

Honey Nut

No, they don't taste like Honey Nut Cheerios, or really honey for that matter. They are tasty and have a slight honey taste, but not much, which is a plus if you're not that into honey. Overall, they're yummy, but not the one we'd pick from the shelf.

Chili Nut

Yes, these are SPICY. The title of these red and orange M&M's doesn't lie - after a few seconds of chewing, the spice kicks in, and the chili flavor pairs really well with sweet chocolate. While this is definitely not a kid-friendly version, it turned out to be the surprising favorite among our co-workers.

Glenn's Death in The Walking Dead Comic Books Is More Disgusting Than You Could Possibly Imagine

A few spoilers below! Tread lightly!

The Walking Dead writers chose to end their season six finale with a massive, frustrating cliffhanger that deprived fans of the knowledge of who the show's newest villain, Negan, brutally murdered in the final seconds of the episode. Although they purposefully kept the ending supervague and there are a few options as to who it could've been, a lot of signs point to it being Glenn, who died in that same scene in the comic books. Since the fact that we won't find out who Negan kills on the show until TWD returns six months from now makes us want to bash our TVs to bits with Lucille, we've decided to channel our anger into studying every bit of Glenn's iconically gruesome death from the comics. See it in all of its grisly glory below, and when you need a break from weeping, check out the funniest things the show's walkers have secretly been thinking.

For Selena Gomez, 1 Event Means 2 Major Outfit Changes

Selena Gomez was a big attraction at Thursday's WE Day celebration in Los Angeles. WE Day is organized to celebrate good work done by young people in communities across the country, and Selena was there to meet and greet - and, of course, entertain - some of her young fans.

First, Selena walked the red carpet in one of her trademark eye-catching looks. She elevated what was otherwise a pretty straightforward ensemble of jeans, a white tee, and heels - and took things up a notch with the addition of a floor-length yellow jacket. There was more fun fashion in store when Selena took the stage to perform in a daring lace cover-up with a black two-piece underneath.

All in all, it seemed to be a particularly inspiring day for entertainer and producer Selena. Writing on Instagram, Selena gave a shout-out to the organizers of WE Day. "I am proud to be apart of what you do to inspire the world. WE are the next generation. By grace through faith," she wrote.

Prepare to Be Obsessed With This Glam-Rock Makeup Line

The modernized take on the grunge trend has infiltrated almost every aspect of our beauty regimens, including our manicures and tattoos. Now it's sneaking into our makeup packaging - and we're loving it.

New York-based cosmetics company Too Cool For School's Spring collection consists of four different products: liquid liner, brow gel, lipstick, and mascara. Though the quartet is inspired by '70s glam rock, each tube is lacquered in a high-gloss black hue with a subtle, gold foil mask accent.

The vampy vibes are particularly obvious in two products in the launch. The lip colors are called "Vampire Kiss" - a bright blood shade and a deep oxblood that are both edgy yet chic. Even more overt is the mascara's packaging: it's a tiny black coffin! Inside is a waterproof formula that leaves your fringe curled, thick, and lengthy. We're particularly a fan of the brush, which features hooked bristles to grab each and every lash.

Read on to see the entire Glam Rock collection, then start saving . . . it'll be available at Sephora this April.

How 1 Teacher Stopped Kids From Teasing a Classmate About Her Natural Hair

Many women of color face discrimination simply because of their hair's natural texture, sometimes being told that the way their strands grow out of their scalps is "unprofessional." Unfortunately, this prejudice can start far too young, affecting elementary school students as well as adults. So when first-grade teacher Alexondra Purnomo observed a student being bullied because of her natural hair, she changed the conversation in her classroom - and the result is truly inspirational.

Purnomo teaches in Rome, Italy, to a class of predominantly white Italian students. Sasha, a new black pupil, recently came to school without braids for the first time. "Some of the kids made fun of her for her short hair, so she started wearing a Winter hat to school and refused to take it off," she shared in a Facebook post. Purnomo, a teacher colleague, and her students discussed how everyone has different characteristics that make them special.

As a result, Sasha finally took off her hat, revealing a little bun. "The other teacher and I both put our hair in buns on the top of our heads saying it was the 'Sasha bun,'" Purnomo said. All of her students - girls and boys alike - ended up wanting their own topknot. The children all styled their hair to match Sasha's and took the above photo.

"We were able to come together as a class and bring a smile to Sasha's face after a long, tough week," Purnomo stated. "It gave me chills to see 19 kids come together to help one fellow student."

Not only are we impressed with how quickly Purnomo and her fellow teachers reacted to the class's bullying (where were they when we were in school?!), but we're also inspired by how her students reacted. If adults start having these conversations about acceptance, perhaps we will live in a culture that embraces beauty diversity sooner than we had expected.

Missed Out Last Time? Urban Decay Is Releasing a New Alice in Wonderland Palette

If you're a Disney fanatic, Urban Decay junkie, or colorful-makeup-lover, you may remember that in 2010, Urban Decay launched the Alice in Wonderland Book of Shadows to go along with the eponymous film. This vibrant palette featured a pop-up-book-like decoration on the lid, eyeliners, and lid primers. Because it so beautifully hit on those aforementioned fan bases, it sold out rapidly, instantly becoming a cult-status product.

In anticipation of the upcoming sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Allure reports that Urban Decay will be launching another precious palette, as well as five lipstick shades. We'll receive official images of the collection on Tuesday, April 12, so be sure to report back then!

14 '80s Movies You NEED to Show Your Kids Today (and Not a Disney Movie in Sight)

Every generation has their flicks. My parents made me sit through Lawrence of Arabia and The Godfather, but few flicks are as generationally relevant as the classic '80s films so many of us grew up watching. I'm looking at you, John Hughes. You defined a generation. You taught us what it meant to be an angsty teen. You provided us with hours upon hours of VHS enjoyment!

With news that Pretty in Pink will be returning to theaters next month for the flick's 30th anniversary (yes, we are that old), I quickly started brainstorming my favorite movies from my childhood that my kids MUST see. It isn't pretty - '80s fashion leaves much to be desired - but the stories stand the test of time and give kids a glimpse at life before cell phones, texting, and the Internet, along with some great life lessons. Read on to see what you should add to your family's movie-night list now!

What It's Really Like Staying at a Japanese Capsule Hotel

I always thought a trip to Japan would be like traveling to the future. So when I booked my first trip to the country last year, I decided to stay at a futuristic capsule hotel. My husband and I chose the sleek Nine Hours hotel in Kyoto, where we paid $45 each for a pod.

The Pros

The value: For a very reasonable price, we were able to stay in one of the best areas of town. Throw in the once-in-a-lifetime story we got out of it, and it seemed like a great deal.

The convenience: The service at Nine Hours was straightforward and friendly. You can leave your luggage in the lobby while you do some sightseeing, and they give you lockers for your valuables. The front desk staff also arranged for a taxi to pick us up in the morning to go to the train station.

The amenities: The locker rooms were spacious and clean, and the showers were hot. The hotel provided towels, quality shampoo and conditioner, and a hair dryer. We also got a pretty comfy nightgown, and there were outlets and an alarm in each pod. The hotel also had lounge areas, with one being women only, that I saw some guests taking advantage of.

The Cons

You have to split from your partner: The floors are divided between men and women. If you come with a partner of the opposite sex, you have to say goodnight in the lobby.

Limited privacy: Each bed capsule comes with a shade that you pull down, but it's not a proper door you can lock. That also means you can hear some mystery noises during the night.

Confined space: I had a moment of panic when I first got to my bottom capsule. It seemed really small and I worried I'd get claustrophobic. But once I turned off the lights I quickly got over it. I did, however, get very hot in the middle of the night and felt there wasn't much ventilation in the pod. That led to a lot of tossing and turning.

In all, I didn't get the best night sleep at Nine Hours, but that could have been because I was worried about waking up for an early train. The location, service, and price definitely made up for it. I'm glad I tried it, but I'll probably stick to a regular hotel next time. Curious to know more about Nine Hours? Check out this video below:

The 7 Rules For Hydrating During Runs

The right amount of hydration can make a good run even better, but not drinking enough water can be uncomfortable - and dangerous. Here are seven hydration rules to follow, for both short and long runs.

Related: 25 Must-Know Tips For Runners

  1. Pay attention to your water intake the day before your run. Drinking enough water every day helps keep your cells hydrated so you don't start off a run dehydrated, which can lead to cramping, fatigue, and a high heart rate.
  2. If your run is an hour or less, then you may not need to bring along a water bottle unless the temperature or humidity is high. Make sure you're well hydrated before your run so you can leave the bottle at home. While this is a rule of thumb, if you find that you are thirsty during your runs, bring along a bottle!

  1. Hydration is extremely important when you're out on a long run, but you don't need to drink as much as you're losing in sweat, says running coach Matt Fitzgerald. "Go ahead and trust your body's signals. That way you'll get as much fluid as your body can actually use, and you won't increase the risk of having your whole run ruined by GI distress," he says.
  2. Make sure you have a water plan before you head out on runs that are longer than an hour. Sick of carrying a water bottle with you? Stash it somewhere along your route beforehand, or run a loop so you can leave your water bottle at a designated spot.
  3. If you're running a race and you don't want to have to wait in the Porta Potty line right when your race starts, then drink only 15-20 ounces in the morning (after you've already used the bathroom once).

  1. If you're working out for more than an hour outside in the heat, then sip on a sports drink instead of just water. Electrolytes will give you more energy and will keep you more hydrated than water alone. We love no-sugar Nuun electrolyte tabs - just drop one into your water bottle and go!
  2. Once you're done with your run, make sure you rehydrate and continue drinking water throughout the day.

How to Be Your Most Authentic, Beautiful, and Fashionable Self, According to Denise Bidot

Whether you remember her from NuvoTV's Curvy Girls or her viral swimsuitsforall pictures, chances are you've heard of Denise Bidot.

The half-Puerto Rican, half-Kuwaiti model, along with her industry peers (including Tess Holliday and Ashley Graham), is championing the idea that "there's no wrong way to be a woman." In fact, it's her mantra. And that mantra is challenging - changing, even - society's unrealistic beauty and body image expectations.

In the spirit of acceptance, Denise joined forces with Unilever for its #100PorCientoTu campaign that acts as an extension of her already-great cause, enabling Latinos everywhere to be their authentic selves. The hashtag campaign actually translates to "100 percent you," and when POPSUGAR Latina recently sat down to interview Denise about it, one thing was clear: she knows who she is, and that is beautiful.

Alas, with such great confidence comes great advice. Keep reading for Denise's take on all things beauty, fashion, and life. Then, be sure to listen to the feel-good music playlist she curated with you in mind.
