10 Ways to Diffuse Tantrums Before They Turn Into Major Public Meltdowns
If you've ever experienced your own child, or even a stranger's kid, having a major public meltdown, you're familiar with that deep uncomfortable feeling in your gut. Instead of cringing in embarrassment for yourself or that other parent - and secretly crossing your fingers in hopes that you never have to deal with something like this again - prepare yourself by knowing exactly what to do in order to prevent the tantrum before it even starts. You won't be able to keep your child from feeling frustrated at all times, but you can be in control of how they express that upset with some simple tips. Check out these 10 tricks to stave off the tantrums without having to use an angry voice or being the one to make a scene yourself!
- Know their triggers: Observe and take note of what typically sets them off in public. Whether they're normally a delight until you pass through the candy aisle or seem to do better in the mornings after a nap as opposed to late afternoons before dinner, being aware of what tends to trigger them will help you to be prepared for it - or avoid it entirely.
- Think ahead: Once you know what their general triggers are, you can create a game plan ahead of time to dodge potential meltdowns. Remember, it is much easier to change your errand routine than dealing with a child having a full-blown fit in the checkout aisle.
- Distract them: If you sense there's a chance that your child is about to kick off, stop the bad behavior before it even starts by distracting them. Averting their attention can be a powerful tool to avoiding any public distress because it seamlessly gives them something else to focus on. Whether it's a simple task or a funny joke, anything that can take their mind off a potential frustration will be a win for you!
- Be positive: Compliment their good behavior and point out positives before things have a chance to go downhill. This will show that you appreciate their behavior and that pride will be an incentive for them to keep up the good work! It will also help them to stay in an upbeat mindset.
- Show empathy: Being empathetic to their plight - even if it's minor - will help them feel heard and can prevent them from acting out or making a scene in order for their feelings to be validated. However, this doesn't mean that you have to give into their demands; it just means that you are actively aware of how they are feeling.
- Give them a mission: Go into an errand or public outing with set "tasks" that you need their help with. This will make them feel like you are on the same team and that they are not being dragged around against their will. Whether they're in charge of helping you spot certain items at the grocery store or they're tasked with handing in the ticket at the dry cleaners, it's amazing what making them feel valued and giving them an independent project can do to their demeanor.
- Look for the cause: If you can tell that something is upsetting your little one, try to look for the cause instead of ignoring it. If you can quickly identify the source - whether they are hot, hungry, or just want to walk on their own - you can help deal with the frustration before it boils over.
- Go into it with an incentive: After you compliment their great behavior, offer them a potential treat when you get home if they keep it up. Not only will they start off the outing already feeling good about themselves but you also now have them thinking ahead.
- Keep the laugh: Don't let yourself get stressed out ahead of time. If you work yourself into fear of what might happen - and what other people will think if it does - you're already setting a negative tone to the trip. Your child will be able to sense if you are tense going into the situation and their behavior is likely to mirror your negative energy.
- Prepare them in advance: Prevent unpleasant breakdowns by explaining what you are going to be doing and your expectations for the trip ahead of time. Limiting any surprises or unknowns will help cut down on your little one trying to push the boundaries because they are going into the situation with a clear understanding of what they can and can't get away with.
Gordon Ramsay's Badass Tip For Making the Very Best Burgers
Image Source: Getty Images / Ethan Miller
Gordon Ramsay knows his sh*t, especially when it comes to classics. I trust him with my life when it comes to scrambled eggs and I'm about to do the same for his method on burgers. While at a press event to promote his new cooking game with Glu Mobile, Gordon joked, "The last time I was this ambitious was opening up my burger restaurant in Las Vegas, because you're doomed to come over as a Brit and attempt to open a burger restaurant in the middle of Las Vegas."
Image Source: Getty Images / Bryan Steffy
Here's where Chef Ramsay gets to the meaty part: "But we perfected the patty, and we basted it in Devonshire butter, and brought something new in. We toughened up the brioche buns so it could absorb all that butter . . ." Do you remember the Jack-In-The-Box Buttery Burger? Yeah, yeah, we all thought America had gone to hell and back until we took a bite and became believers. Quite simply, fat makes things taste better, and Gordon Ramsay definitely knows that. In case you are worried you can't procure Devonshire butter at your local grocery store, opt for a cultured butter like this one from Trader Joe's. It's salty and has a slightly funky cheese flavor. Baste the hell out of that burger for optimum flavor! And secondly, raise your hand if your bun has disentegrated within five minutes of placing the patty on it. Gordon has such an obvious yet uncommon solution: use a tougher bread! While a homemade brioche bun may be out of the question, consider a sturdy pretzel bun.
9 Things You Should Be Doing After Every Workout
Whether you're new to fitness, or you're going a little harder than usual (two-a-days, anyone?), it's essential to take care of your body after each and every workout. Doing so will help prevent injury, pain, and discomfort. Make sure you're always following these steps and giving your body the TLC it needs so it can perform at its best.
- Cool Down. A universal tip you'll hear from trainers, in and out of the gym: don't skip the cooldown. It's essential for your body to go back to its resting state, break down excess cortisol and lactic acid, and leave you feeling good, both physically and mentally.
- Foam Roll. Right after your workout, and when you're home and feeling sore, make sure you use a foam roller, tennis ball, or any kind of massage device. I use a hollow foam roller, in addition to a flexible massage band. Need some help? Try these active rest-day foam-rolling tips.
- Stretch. This one might be obvious, but it's so important to stretch in between workouts, especially on your rest days. Try these essential post-workout stretches, or these supereasy stretches you can do in bed!
- Ice It. If you have an injury, or an area of your body that's especially sore, the general rule of thumb is 20 minutes on (with ice), 20 minutes off. If you've done an intense training event, maybe stacked a couple workouts into the same day, or just ran a half or full marathon, an ice bath may be in order.
- Sweat It Out. To get rid of toxins and lactic acid build up, some trainers recommend hitting up a sauna or steam room. See if your gym or wellness center has something like this on offer, or take a nice hot shower.
- Drink Up! You need to be drinking lots and lots of water to get your body and your muscles back to normal. Hydration is key! After especially grueling training sessions, replenish lost electrolytes with electrolyte-enhanced waters, sports drinks, or coconut water.
- Reduce Swelling. You can take ibuprofen or Advil for pain and swelling, or opt for a homeopathic treatment like arnica cream or pellets.
- Replace Protein. After a workout, your body needs to replace branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). Opt for a protein-packed snack or a protein shake with your favorite powder. Not a fan of protein powder? Try this protein strawberry smoothie. And while the natural sources with the highest BCAA content are all animal based (chicken, lean beef or steak, canned tuna, and salmon), roasted peanuts also have a ton, making for a great recovery food.
- Get Magnesium. It helps with cramping, in addition to general stress (and you might feel a little stressed when you're sore!). Try eating a banana, sorrel leaves or spinach, potato skins, edamame, or a piece of fish.
If you're especially sore or fatigued, remember that it's equally important to take time to rest between workouts, and give your body proper time to recover.
7 Truths About Your Kids and Anxiety
Anxiety is a part of everyone's life, to some degree. But for kids, it's an emotion that can be frustrating, scary, and overwhelming. "More than anything, we want our children to know that everyone experiences [anxiety]. We need to teach our kids that it's normal," child development expert Denise Daniels told us. Denise has served as an adviser on children's grief issues to both former First Lady Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is the cofounder of the National Childhood Grief Institute, and has partnered with the Yale University Center for Emotional Intelligence to develop The Moodsters, a line of toys designed to teach kids to work through emotions.
We couldn't imagine anyone more qualified to share her advice on the topic than Denise. Here, seven things every parent should know and what you can do to help your kids work through their anxieties and fears.

6 Amazing Reasons This Mom Can't Lose Her Baby Weight
The following post was originally featured on Carriage Before Marriage and written by Amy Wruble, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Moms.
My baby is turning one. While a lot of mamas are back to their pre-pregnancy weight by then, I've still got a ways to go. And frankly, I don't really care. In fact, I bristle at the implication that I or any recently pregnant lady should be racing to shrink down. (Shut up, tabloids.)
Here are the many excellent reasons why I can't possibly lose the baby weight right now, thank you very much. And if you need an excuse, feel free to borrow one of mine!
- I use carbs to keep me awake.
- My spare tire provides a nice cushion for the baby, like a human Boppy pillow.
- It's bad enough I yell sometimes from being tired and overwhelmed. If I was tired, overwhelmed and starving, they'd have to call CPS.
- Full-fat dairy is recommended for one-year-olds. It's also delicious.
- Why pay for a gym membership I'll never use when I could spend that money on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime?
- Counting calories requires brain cells I lost from being pregnant twice.

Zara Employee Feels Humiliated After Being Told Her Hair Was Unprofessional
Zara has been facing criticism after a Toronto-based employee was asked to take out her box braids, shown below, because they looked "unprofessional."
Zara employee accuses store of discrimination over her hairstyle https://t.co/x4LlOFr5sO http://pic.twitter.com/BS6L8OIwTn
- CBC Toronto (@CBCToronto) April 11, 2016
It all started when 20-year-old Cree Ballah came into work in late March with box braids that were gathered and tied up in the back. One of her managers asked her to remove the braids shortly thereafter.
Ballah told CBC Toronto, "They took me outside of the store and they said, 'We're not trying to offend you, but we're going for a clean professional look with Zara and the hairstyle you have now is not the look for Zara.'"
At this point Ballah's managers proceeded to see what they could to do "fix" her hairstyle - an experience she described as being "humiliating."
Ballah's experience is reminiscent of Akua Agyemfra's, the restaurant employee who was sent home for having her natural hair up in a bun. Coincidentally, Agyemfra also lived and worked in Toronto. In both cases, these women were unable to fulfill their employers' arbitrary beauty standards simply because of the texture of their strands. As Ballah stated, "My hair type is also linked to my race, so to me, I felt like it was direct discrimination against my ethnicity in the sense of what comes along with it."
Zara has since stated that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination; however, the company ultimately supports the managers who, in the brand's opinion, "engaged directly the employee on this matter and respect the privacy of those discussions."
Zendaya Was Basically Eve From Life-Size at Her Latest Appearance
At 19, Zendaya has yet again confirmed her role as one badass beauty icon. At a recent appearance to celebrate the Marie Claire Fresh Faces issue (in which she is featured), the CoverGirl spokesperson walked the red carpet in quite possibly one of her best looks to date.
Wearing a vintage Chanel bralette and jacket, the outspoken Disney star sported a supersleek, superhigh ponytail that led to some pretty amazing hair flips throughout the evening. She completed the look with her signature defined brows, youthful pink lips, and a lot of megawatt highlighter.
After spending a fair amount of time staring at her Barbie-like look, I came to the realization that Zendaya was giving us Tyra Banks's iconic character Eve from the made-for-television movie Life-Size (which also starred Lindsay Lohan). Though it might not have been entirely intentional, that similarity only made me love her even more. Read on to see the star's gorgeous style from all angles.

Megan Fox Grabs Lunch With Brian Austin Green After Pregnancy News Breaks
Megan Fox showed off her baby bump in a printed maxi dress while grabbing lunch with her estranged husband, Brian Austin Green, in LA on Tuesday. The pair didn't show any PDA but walked side by side down the street and chatted with each other. Megan made headlines on Monday night when she revealed her growing belly on the red carpet at CinemaCon; the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles star linked up with her costar Will Arnett and posed for photos in a tight-fitting black dress. It will be the third child for Brian and Megan - the two are already parents to sons Noah and Bodhi - and Megan made sure to address rumors surrounding the paternity of her unborn child via Instagram on Tuesday by sharing a collage of pictures with Will, Shia LaBeouf, and her New Girl costar Jake Johnson captioned "#NotTheFather."
News of Megan's pregnancy came as a surprise to most, especially considering that she and Brian announced their separation back in August. The couple had been married for five years and dating for nearly 11, and Megan cited their separation date as June 15, 2015. After Megan put her baby bump on display, E! reported that Brian is the father of her child and that the couple will likely postpone their divorce proceedings; according to a source close to the couple, the divorce "will likely be put on hold for a while," and, "This pregnancy was not planned, but when they found out they were extremely happy." 10 Tips For Baking Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate chip cookies are one of life's greatest treasures. It's hard to believe a simple chocolate chip recipe could improve, but there are small tweaks you can make to make your cookies that much more delicious. Let these tips lead you to the best homemade chocolate chip cookies ever.
- Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature. Getting your butter and eggs to room temperature is an important step before you even begin baking. This will take about 30 minutes and will ensure everything is easy to mix. If you need your butter softened quickly, pop it in the microwave for a few seconds or grate it with a cheese grater.
- Use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour for chewier, cake-like cookies. More into cake than cookies? Use bread flour instead of traditional all-purpose flour for thicker, chewier cookies (that's how Alton Brown makes his cookies).
- Use all brown sugar for softer, thicker, butterscotch-flavored cookies. You don't have to use a combination of brown and granulated white sugar. If you love the deeper flavor of brown sugar, use extra.
- To take it to the next level and make your own brown sugar. That's right - you can make homemade brown sugar by combining pure cane sugar and molasses.
- Or use all granulated sugar for flatter, crispier cookies. In contrast, if you're not crazy about brown sugar, omit it altogether and use all granulated sugar for flat and thin cookies.
- Add a pinch of instant coffee granules if you love the combination of chocolate and coffee. Espresso chocolate chip cookies are the ultimate afternoon pick-me-up.
- Swap chocolate chips for chocolate discs. Chocolate discs create better pockets of melty, chewy goodness.
- Use an ice cream scoop. Scooping cookie dough with an ice cream scoop ensures there's an equal amount of dough in each cookie.
- Don't peak! It's tempting to look, but opening the oven will cause the cookies to flatten.
- Top with flake salt for a sophisticated finish. Is there a better flavor combination than sweet and salty?

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Cook Steak
Steak is one of those things that intimidates a lot of people but really shouldn't. If you've ever struggled with cooking the perfect steak, this list of tips should help. We've turned to some of our favorite Food Network personalities and more celebrity chefs for their steakhouse-worthy cooking methods.
Alton Brown: Pan-Seared and Oven-Baked
For pan-seared rib eyes, Alton Brown recommends two key things: bring the steak to room temperature (it cooks quicker this way), and heat a cast-iron skillet in the oven while the oven heats to 500 degrees. He doesn't use the oven until the steaks have been seared first, but heating up the skillet before putting it on the stove helps get the process started and ensure a completely heated-through pan.
Giada De Laurentiis: Add Italian Flavors
Giada's Tuscan rib-eye steak recipe proves everything is better with Italian flair. If you're into rosemary, thyme, garlic, and lemon (who isn't?), this is the best way to cook your steak.
Ree Drummond: Butter-Rubbed Grill Pan
The Pioneer Woman's first blog post to go viral was titled "How to Cook a Steak," and it's easy to see why. Her "never-fail arsenal" is just three ingredients: "Lawry's Seasoned Salt, McCormick Lemon Pepper, and a nice stick of regular (salted) butter." Ree advises coating a hot grill pan in butter before searing the steaks. In the post, she promises, "If you cook it for your friends, they'll never invite you over to their house for dinner again. You will have permanently raised the bar."
Gordon Ramsay: Baste With Butter
It's no surprise that Gordon Ramsay's tip for steak is the same as his tip for burgers: baste with butter. Besides the fact that fat makes everything taste better, Gordon explains that coating steak with melted butter "gives it a nice nutty brown finish."
Ina Garten: Steakhouse-Style Filet Mignon
Leave it to The Barefoot Contessa to school us in making a restaurant-worthy dish at home. If you're feeling fancy and opt for filet mignon, you'll want to use a generous coating of fleur de sel and coarsely cracked black peppercorns to achieve a perfect crust. If you follow her recipe to a T, you'll be the one saying, "How easy is that?"
Chrissy Teigen: Soak in a Garlicky Marinade
Chrissy Teigen admits in her cookbook, Cravings, that she's normally a traditionalist when it comes to steak (page 206), but her husband John Legend's "best marinade in existence" changed her mind. A lot goes into it - soy sauce and garlic, for starters - and after marinating for eight hours, you're on your way to juicy, flavor-packed steak. "I would probably still go simple if I was staring at the most beautiful piece of beef I've ever seen, but use this tangy marinade on a nice, solid rib eye, and I promise you, it will be hard for you to have it any other way," she wrote.
Tom Colicchio: Grill on Each Side
Top Chef's Tom Colicchio recommends turning the steak a total of six times while it's on the grill (grill it for three to four minutes on each side, including the edges). He also recognizes that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to steak. In an interview with POPSUGAR, he said, "start with buying the perfect steak - you can't buy a lousy piece of meat and make it great."
Bobby Flay: Perfectly Grilled
Bobby Flay, master of the grill, doesn't bother with anything complicated for his perfectly grilled steak recipe. All you need is steak, oil, and salt and pepper - and Bobby always recommends oiling the meat itself, not the grill or pan.

5 Concrete Examples That Shake Shack Is Far Superior to In-N-Out
I feel like a traitor, but I am a LA native who would take Shake Shack over In-N-Out any day. Feel free to call me spoiled, but I had the luxury of growing up with In-N-Out whenever I craved it. In high school, it was almost a rite of passage, having your signature "secret menu" order that the upperclassmen could pick up for you with their car privileges. For me, it was an animal-style cheeseburger with both grilled and regular onions, extra crispy fries, and a Neapolitan shake. I remember always wanting to get a Summer job at the one right next to UCLA, because they paid more than any other fast-food job and it was constantly packed with cute college boys.
When I left to attend NYU for college, my East Coast friends would beg and plead to come home with me for the holidays and demand that our first stop in LA be at the In-N-Out right next to the airport. I maintained that In-N-Out burgers were always superior. Then in 2004, the game changed when I found myself part of the original staff that opened the very first Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.
Leading up to the opening, chef Kerry Heffernan, who you might know from Top Chef Masters, embarked on a massive burger tour of the country trying everything and anything, included my previously beloved In-N-Out, to figure out how to perfect the Shack Burger. I might be a bit biased as I got to be there from the very beginning to see this burger shaped into the phenomenon that it has become, but after biting into my first burger that Summer of 2004, I knew I'd found a new love.
1. The Meat
Winner: Shake Shack
While In-N-Out's patty packs the flavor, especially with the bit of bite from the mustard grill, Shake Shack's smash and grill technique creates a far superior burger with a great slightly crispy texture on the outside while maintaining a juicy and tender interior. And that's before we even get to the ingredients. Shake Shack sources its meat from one of the best purveyors, Pat LaFrieda, and blends brisket, short rib, and sirloin into a patty that can't be beat. The first season I worked the line, I was asked out constantly, and I'd like to attribute it to the intoxicating "eau de burger" that permeated my clothes and hair. Comparatively, In-N-Out uses 100 percent chuck beef.
2. The "Secret" Sauce
Winner: Shake Shack
Like all good burger chains, both boast their own original secret sauce, a concoction similar to thousand island yet infused with their own variety of spices and flavors. In-N-Out presents a solid offering, a prepackaged sweet and pickled pink sauce that does a good job of blending with the burger fat to create a drool-worthy drip that keeps you licking your hands for more, but I know the secret to Shake Shack's, and it involves a little chipotle. Homemade mayo, two different kinds of mustard, tomato paste, pickles, salt, pepper, and chipotle! That extra kick of smoky savory is what really sets them apart for me. We used to bottle up the extra and eat it on pretty much anything and everything: french fries, pizza, late-night garlic knots, and dare I say even on the street cart dogs.
3. The Bun
Winner: Shake Shack
If you're not a fan of the potato bun, then there's nothing to be said to this point. They're different. In-N-Out features a generic, spongy hamburger bun, the run-of-the-mill stuff you find everywhere, that's toasted on the grill. Shake Shack's is a soft, buttery potato bun that's slathered in even more butter and then griddled to a crispy perfection. Now tell me that one doesn't sound better than the other.
4. The Toppings
Winner: Tie
For this review I'm sticking to the classics. Both burger joints feature fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. If you ask for all the fixings, Shake Shack adds two fresh, crisp pickle slices right on top. If you're a pickle fan like me, they're quite magical. In-N-Out does offer pickles, but you have to ask for them. I do have to give one point to In-N-Out for adding on grilled onions, but I'm pretty sure you can now customize your Shack Burger to look the same.
5. The French Fries
Winner: Shake Shack
In my opinion, In-N-Out fries are just not good. I've never really liked them. I've dealt with them for the sake of the burger, but they're perhaps the weakest french fry offering out there. Shake Shack's crinkle-cut fries might be of the premade, frozen variety, but they crisp up nicely and are the perfect warm conduit for dipping in a side order of the Shack Sauce, because to be honest, you can never get too much of that delicious pink stuff!
I'm so happy that there's now a Shake Shack just down the street (in LA), even closer to my house than In-N-Out. I dare say I might never go back to In-N-Out again. Just kidding, but seriously, Shake Shack is so much better.
And if you're not lucky enough to live in one of the few places that boast both burger joints, then take a look at our home hacks for both the In-N-Out and Shake Shack burgers.
If You're Busy AF (but Want to Eat Well), Get Gwyneth Paltrow's Newest Cookbook
Gwyneth Paltrow just released her third cookbook, It's All Easy: Delicious Weekday Recipes For the Super-Busy Home Cook ($35). This book feels like a departure from her first foodie-centric cookbook, My Father's Daughter, and her second, the highly criticized It's All Good. This one feels like it's more attainable, offering a range of recipes and simple, assembled dishes to satisfy you on the days you're craving something hefty (like a baguette sandwich) or wishing to eat a little lighter (like a grilled shrimp chopped salad). Not quite convinced yet? Here's why you should be stoked:
1. It's built for busy people.
In the intro to the cookbook, Gwyneth manages to conjure home cooking as exotic and adventurous amid a jam-packed schedule: "This book is meant to be a road map: a self-help book for the chronically busy cook." If, like me, you are always on the search to not eat complete sh*t when you are ridiculously busy and simultaneously are a sucker for self-help books that can offer realistic guidance, this is the cookbook for you. The coauthor of the book (and food editor of Goop), Thea Baumann, explains, "With a name like It's All Easy, you might expect this to be full of recipes with five ingredients that can be made in under 20 minutes. It's not. What it is, however, is a book thoughtfully developed by two busy women who understand the importance of a good, simple meal."
2. The recipes are relevant to today's food scene and feature buzzy ingredients.
No, the cookbook isn't full of recipes like "how to hard-boil an egg." Instead, the pages contain unique riffs on foods that bloggers and trendy restaurants have been serving up over the last few years: acai bowls, ginger chia pudding, tortilla soup noodle pot (with zucchini noodles, of course), beet chips, even homemade coconut milk for no other than a coconut milk au lait. Gwyneth admits in the intro that there is even "some cheese" and "regular flour" in the recipes. She even assures you it's OK to "sneak in a glass of wine." Cue the excitement! But don't worry, there's also a gluten-free, dairy-free dessert section.
2. The images will transport you.
The book's aesthetic is like a grown-up's fantasy of an idyllic, urban life. The photos capture "busy-ness" like you're residing in the center of Paris, where you ride your granny bike to the flower mart in between meetings and pop by the Seine to picnic on bibimbap for lunch. It's simultaneously dreamy and completely unrealistic, but it's what we aim our busy lives to appear like, isn't it? And at the end of the day, that's why we love Goop.

This is not a drill! A sneak peek at the first product from the highly anticipated MAC x Selena collection, launching in October, is here! The Como La Flor lipstick - could the name be more perfect? - is a deep fuchsia inspired by Selena's fans and created by the Tejano singer's sister, Suzette Quintanilla. The shade is universal and so indicative of Selena's love for strong and vibrant lip colors.
"I wanted the colors to be about her personally, what she wore on and off stage. She has been gone for 21 years already, and for this collaboration to happen, it's pretty much incredible. It just shows the love her fan base has even though she's gone; that her music still lives on and her legacy has grown tremendously since she's passed," said Suzette in a statement released by MAC. "It's a great honor to have MAC collaborate with Selena's name and her fans - FOR her fans." We can't wait to see what else will be part of the makeup launch - October can't come soon enough!
