Why I Absolutely Refuse to Buy Anything From Ikea
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Sheila Gim
I know I run the risk of being blasted for such a strong statement, but it's true, I absolutely refuse to buy anything from Ikea. Life is too damn short to struggle so much for furniture. Here are my backup reasons why:
1. The Fails Seem Unavoidable, Predictable Even
OK, I've never bought a single piece of Ikea furniture before, so I can't speak from personal experience, but I don't know a friend, family member, and coworker that hasn't struggled, failed, and given up when it comes to assembling Ikea furniture. I think I actively decided against buying anything from Ikea thanks to my sister, who's apartment consists of many pieces of Ikea furniture. I consider her the most skilled furniture assembler in the world, and even she has owned up to the fact that a set of Ikea drawers, for instance, may take her all weekend to build.
All weekend? Excuse me, but my weekends are sacred, and I'd rather be outdoors shopping in a fleamarket for a set of drawers than attempt to build one, suck at it majorly, and run the risk of a meltdown that requires a bottle of wine to soothe. The scene in Celeste and Jesse Forever seems all too plausible. Ryan Reynolds speaks for everyone when he says Ikea furniture causes "a slow descent into alcoholism." In addition, I need very clear, very detailed step-by-steps if I'm going to "build" something, and recently, my sister and I laughed and laughed at the set of instructions (if you can call them that) that came with her Ikea drawers.
2. I Am Accident-Prone and Don't Trust Myself
All of these furniture recalls really freak me out. I don't trust myself to build a safe, sturdy piece of furniture. I am confident I'd find a way to collapse (in the chair) or something equally as terrible and dangerous. No thanks.

3. The Store Is a Consumer's Prison
Have you ever tried to just do a quick "walk through" an Ikea? The store is designed to be a mousetrap. Even the "shortcuts" take you another roundabout way. There is no escaping the florescent lights and dizzying, sickening rows of stuff. I couldn't help but imagine all of it ending up in a landfill in a few years time.
4. I Bought One Thing and Am Unhappy With It
I have bought exactly one thing from Ikea in all of my adulthood, and that's a mattress. Truth is, I had wanted a latex mattress, and my then-boyfriend pressured me into going the cheap-o route and buying from Ikea. I should have known better. I loathe sleeping on the mattress and will never forget my experience of actually buying it. I had ordered it ahead, but since it would have taken forever (and cost extra) to get it delivered, I opted to go to the store to pick it up. Disaster. I scheduled my pick-up time way in advance, but it still took them an hour for them to pull the mattress to the pick-up section. Thankfully I had two extra sets of hands to stuff it into the back of my car, but I'm getting too old for this rodeo of lifting stuff that's too heavy for my small frame. I plan on going the Casper route next time.
5. Ikea Furniture Doesn't "Spark Joy"
I recently went through Marie Kondo's KonMari Method, which calls for assessing every single thing you own (furniture included) and tossing everything that doesn't "spark joy." Ikea furniture doesn't "spark joy" for me. I want to value the objects I own, and I find that's hard to do with Ikea furniture, maybe because it's intended to be temporary and something that's tossed within a few years use. I get that people are often motivated by price when buying furniture, and I am too, but I value pieces of furniture I want to keep for a while.
10 Ways to Spend Less at CVS
CVS is (debatably) king of the modern American drugstores, with tons of shopper-friendly products and prices. We don't blame you a bit, though, if you're looking to save even MORE cash at the Consumer Value Store. Below are 10 ways you can keep your wallet happy when making the trip to this particular chain. (And while you're at it, check out our hacks for saving cash at Walgreens!)
- Enroll in the membership program. Snagging a free ExtraCare card is crucial in hoarding those additional dollars at CVS. The rewards program ensures you get the store's ExtraSavings sales on weekly select items! Simply ask to sign up at checkout.
- Keep an eye on the weekly ad. Take your membership one step further by creating an account online. This way, you can manage your ExtraCare rewards from your laptop as well as view the weekly ad and deals tailored to members.
- Use your ExtraCare Bucks. The precious ExtraCare Bucks (ECB) feature may be the breadwinner of membership perks. These "bucks" are essentially cash, and work as in-store credit. They automatically print at the bottom of your receipt, and they're issued four times per year on Jan. 1, April 1, July 1, and Oct. 1 for 2 percent back on in-store and online purchases. Qualifying items from the weekly ad will earn you ECB as well. Keep in mind they DO expire, so save your receipts and don't forget about them!
- Check the website for general deals. Even nonmembers can see an overview of deals, including printable coupons, on the website.
- Purchase discounted gift cards. You can get these convenient discounted gift cards on Gift Granny!
- If applicable, join the Veterans Advantage program. Veterans will save 20 percent every time they buy items from the online store.
- Sign up to be a CVS advisor. By taking CVS surveys a few times per year, you'll become eligible for savings and rewards. Sign up here.
- Take advantage of the coupon kiosk. Look for the in-store coupon kiosk, which will print out coupons and special offers for ExtraCare members.
- Buy more CVS brand products. Ask yourself if you really need the name-brand product that costs a couple bucks more, or if the generic CVS brand would work just as well. Usually, it's not worth the higher price!
- Download the app. The CVS app advertises app-only deals. Just link your card and swoop up those exclusive bargains!

18 of the Best Things About Going to Disneyland as an Adult
You don't need to have kids to enjoy Disneyland. In fact, I'd argue it's better without them. (I know, I'm terrible and clearly don't have kids.) I'm an adult woman who loves Disneyland, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. Here's why Disneyland is awesome as an adult.
How Saying "Yes" to (Most) Things Has Changed My Life
Thinking back on how different things are in my life now compared to when I first moved to San Francisco after graduating college last year is pretty crazy. I was still with my then-boyfriend of four years. I was just starting out at my job at POPSUGAR and basically starting over in a new city. Minus a couple acquaintences who lived in the Bay Area, most of my friends and family were all back home in LA. It was only a week in when I left our apartment and our relationship, only a week in when I was truly alone. Today I can honestly say that I'm the happiest that I've ever been and it's all thanks to saying one simple word: yes.
My first day on the job, our Fitness editor extended a press invite to a gin-tasting tour around the best spots in the city. Although fresh out of college, I wasn't much of a drinker. But I thought, "what better way to familiarize myself with San Francisco and my new co-workers than getting drunk on a private trolley?" So I said "yes" and happily took her offer. Not only was it a great way to bond with my colleagues, but it was also an experience I'll never forget.
We received yet another invite from our editor later in the year, which required flying to Newport Beach, CA, to a weekend fitness retreat. I was probably the least qualified person to have represented our Fitness team among 400 Tone It Up women. And to those who know me, the thought of this trip was laughable. Regardless of being the ambassador of junk-food binging and always opting for the elevator over stairs anyday, I said "yes." Little did I know that that would've been the start of my slightly more active life. I don't remember the last time I ran a mile let alone an entire 5K. But immediately after surprising myself at the finish line, we spent the first afternoon surfing (which I've only done once in my life for 10 minutes at age 8) followed by some stand-up paddleboarding - also totally new to me at the time. Needless to say, I had the most amazing couple days. I left the retreat feeling inspired to continue this healthy lifestyle, and I do still continue to take weekly dance classes and try to tag along on to as many fitness classes with friends as I can.
Rewind to when I was apartment hunting for myself after my breakup, when the rest of my social life in San Francisco really came to be. I fell in love with the first place I saw and went over after work one day to pick up the lease. As we were about to part ways, the tenant who I'd be taking over for said, "Hey, I swear this wasn't some ploy to get girls but do you want to grab drinks sometime?" I hadn't dated anyone in college besides my ex nor have I ever agreed to an invitation from a complete stranger. But he was cute and terribly sweet so I said "yes." And since then, he's become one of my closest friends as well as the reason why I know what I know about this city today. I got well acquainted with his roommates and amazing circle of friends who've easily become my own and who've introduced me to more things than any travel guidebook ever could. In the beginning, I realized how difficult it was to make friends as an adult. Thankfully, because we grabbed drinks, that problem quickly dissolved.
Before moving out here, I didn't care much for nightlife either. I had never gone to a bar or a club, and I was always content with hanging out at home on weekends as I still am. But new friends equaled new experiences and I was open to (most) plans I was invited to. "Want to go see (insert band or DJ here)?" My music predominantly consists of hip-hop, which is surprisingly scarce in San Francisco in comparison to the thriving electronic scene. "I have no idea who that is but yes!" And it almost always turns out to be one of the best nights of my life.
I was walking home with a girl I had met in dance class one evening and during our talk, she told me that she leads the San Francisco chapter of something called One Salon, a social and intellectual gathering where people discuss a different topic each week. She said that next week's meeting would cover the idea of happiness and the science behind it. You can probably guess what I replied. Yep - I said "yes." The following week when it took place, I walked into a common room filled with total strangers. Aside from a couple previous attendees, it turned out that no one else knew each other. As she explained on our walk home, it was a safe space where all ideas and perspectives were welcome. Listening to everyone's personal antecdotes and thoughts on happiness was eye-opening and I sat fascinated by these differing opinions. I left feeling more inspired than ever and immediately had to call my dad to talk about the amazing, electic group of people I had just met. I've been terrible at returning to the Salon since, but even if I never go back, I'm so glad I was able to experience it at least once.
If you haven't caught on yet, the moral of the story is to step out of your comfort zone when you can. Your social life and overall well-being will reap the benefits of this kind of attitude. It doesn't stop there either - being more open to challenges and opportunities at work will help you grow and standout as an employee, too. Taking initiative and being enthusiastic and willing to tackle whatever comes your way can only result in good. And equally inside the workplace as outside, fear can inhibit so much more than you realize. No one enjoys being uncomfortable; it's a feeling we all try to combat by saying "no." But the second you own that sense of foreignness and view it as a new experience or opportunity, your entire outlook will shift for the better. In addition to the amazing experiences and people I've come to know, that same sense of fulfillment and joy has extended to my daily life and I don't have to do something life-altering every day to acheive that. Harnessing a go-for-it attitude can allow positivity to reach the corners of your every day.
So the next time you're hesitant about accepting an invitation, take the plunge and go for it. What do you have to lose?

45 Life Lessons Written by a "90-Year-Old" Woman
People often tell Regina Brett how great she looks for her age. Turns out, she is actually in her 50s - not 90. She wrote down these life lessons the night before her 45th birthday after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Over that past decade, these lessons have gone viral on the Internet amid claims that she is 90 years old. Luckily, she finds humor in this misrepresentation, knowing how many lives she has touched.
Whatever her age might be, these universal lessons are relatable to anyone who needs a little reminder of what's important in life.

- Burn the candles; use the nice sheets; wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
- Overprepare, then go with the flow.
- Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
- The most important sex organ is the brain.

- Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"
- Forgive everyone everything.
- What other people think of you is none of your business.

- Believe in miracles.
- Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
- Growing old beats the alternative - dying young.
- Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.
- Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
- If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
- Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
- Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
- All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
- Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
- The best is yet to come.
- No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up.
- Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
- If you don't ask, you don't get.
- Yield.
- Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

When Susan Hansen, a Ballston, NY building owner, decided to remodel her property into a spa, she never expected to discover that the space used to serve a much different purpose. It turns out it was the site of a popular bowling alley and cafe from the early 20th century until the early 1930s. This Popular Ikea Item Killed Another Child Resurfacing Last Year's Safety Incidents
After two children were killed in accidents caused by unanchored Malm dressers in 2014, Ikea issued a recall last July for nearly 27 million of the popular chest and drawer models. And the conversation about product safety has resurfaced due to a third death that took place this February. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the affordable furniture retailer's "chests and dressers can tip over if not attached to the wall, posing an entrapment hazard." 22-month-old Theodore McGee tragically passed from this warning exactly - the dresser fell and crushed him, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In response to CPSC chairman Elliot Kaye commending Ikea for the recall saying that "they need to do more and to make more stable furniture and they need to help lead industry," Ikea has introduced its Secure It! campaign. The retailer chose not to actually recall the products, claiming that the furniture is safe when assembled properly with the provided hardware. Many customers don't go through with that last, vital step. Instead of urging customers to return their Malm chests, Ikea has been offering free wall-anchoring repair kits to prevent any further hazard to children, which 300,000 customers have already taken advantage of.
In a statement issued to The Huffington Post by Ikea'S U.S. Corporate Public Relations Director, she said:
"We at IKEA offer our deepest condolences to the McGee family.
At IKEA, we believe children are the most important people in the world and the safety of our products is our highest priority. Consistent with our ongoing work and cooperation with the CPSC, upon being informed of this incident we immediately reported it to the CPSC and an investigation is taking place. IKEA has been advised that the product was not attached to the wall, which is an integral part of the product's assembly instructions.
We wish to emphasize that the best way to prevent tip-over of chests of drawers is to attach products to the wall with the included restraints and hardware per the assembly instructions. IKEA has included restraints with our chest of drawers for decades, and wall attachment is an integral part of the assembly instructions."
Theodore's family claims to have been unaware of IKEA's Secure It! repair program and plans to sue.
In addition to the two Malm-related deaths in 2014, the international brand also knows of three additional deaths caused by other Ikea dresser models. This is not an issue unique to Ikea, though - according to the CPSC, a child in the United States dies every two weeks due to tipped furniture or televisions, which inspired its Anchor It program in 2015. The injury rate is even higher: one child is injured every 24 minutes in similar accidents.
So if you've got an unanchored Malm chest or dresser in your home, be sure to keep it away from kids until you're able to claim a safety repair kit. To get yours, visit an Ikea store, visit the brand's safety website, or call on the phone to order (free of charge).

This Cat Definitely Loves Her Lizard . . . Not Sure He Loves Her Back
Sigh. Cats just love to go where they please and get in the way all the time. It's part of their appeal, though, right? This cat couldn't stand being left out of the fun of her bearded dragon pal being weighed, so she hopped on the scale too. And then she proceeded to snuggle her lizard friend, though it's hard to say whether or not the love is mutual. Nonetheless, it's freakin' adorable. For even more adorableness, check out more cute animal videos here.

This Hungry Cat Is All of Us After Enjoying 4/20
Happy 4/20! If you're celebrating today appropriately, then you can probably understand where this cat's coming from with his desire to camp out in the fridge. Truthfully, Arthur is probably just one of those hungry kitties that can't stay out of the fridge (because where else does a cat belong?), but we like to imagine that he took advantage of 4/20 and just got a really bad case of the munchies.

6 Things to Keep in Mind If Your Dog Is Traveling as Cargo on a Plane
Before you know it, your next vacation will be here, and you definitely don't want to leave your beloved big dog behind. While bringing a small dog on a plane is fairly easy, there's a bit more that goes into bringing a big dog and checking him as cargo. DogVacay's resident pet expert Nicole Ellis, who frequently travels with her Bichon/Miniature Poodle mix, Maggie, gave us some things to keep in mind if you're sending your dog under the plane.
- Call to make sure that your pup's crate is the right size and register them on the flight ahead of time.
- Some breeds have a harder time flying in cargo, so check with your airline to make sure your dog's breed is accepted.
- For short-nosed breeds, it's best to travel in the middle of the day in colder months and morning and evening or warmer months. It's not a good idea to fly your pet in cargo during very hot months.
- Pack a water bottle, like the hanging ball mechanism bottles as they are less likely to spill.
- Make sure your pets nail's have been clipped to prevent them from getting stuck on the crate door, air vents, and other holes.
- Don't give your pup medicine to them calm down - these can actually make it so that your dog has a hard time adjusting their body temperature. While flying, the air temperature can change (especially below the plane), and it's vital that your pet is able to regulate his or her body temperature during the flight.
While sending your dog under the plane is definitely stressful - after all, you're putting all your trust in someone else to be sure the crate is secured and transported safely - it's an efficient way to travel, and those who work for the airlines are pros at doing this. So go forth and enjoy your next vacation, big dog included!
The Street Dogs in Peru Are the Friendliest Pups You'll Ever Meet
While visiting Machu Picchu was an obvious highlight on my last trip to Peru, what I was perhaps more excited about were the endless street dogs littering the cities. Everywhere you looked, there were dogs of all shapes and sizes lounging around and mingling with the people. I obviously love dogs so I found this exciting, but I was shocked to find out that not only were all these dogs incredibly well-behaved, but they were also well cared for. Just because they live on the streets doesn't mean they're abandoned. There were bowls of food and water left out on doorsteps and storefronts, and people often would stop and lavish the dogs with attention before continuing on their way. While at Machu Picchu, there was a dog playing in the street, and a man actually stopped traffic to guide the dog out - though, admittedly, traffic had already slowed for the dog anyway.
I wasn't quite confident enough to pet any of the dogs, but I did call them all good babies while taking their photos. Scroll through to meet just a small selection of the ones I saw!
An Ode to The Pioneer Woman's Dog Charlie
We'd like to begin by saying we are not picking favorites when it comes to The Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond's dogs. We love them all equally; it's just that the Basset Hound happens to make frequent appearances on the chef's Instagram account, and we love everything about him. From his snoring to his excessive naps, his adorably droopy eyes and floppy ears, this old guy is just almost too much for us to handle. We pulled a few of our absolute favorite photos and videos of him - as well as some of Ree's other Basset Hound Walter, because two are always better than one - so scroll through the gallery to see them. If you want even more of Charlie - and Ree's gorgeous photos - check out her Instagram.
Only Hardcore Sleepers Will Be Able to Understand These 13 Struggles
We all have that friend - JK, it's us - who needs to get in their daily 10 to 12 hours of beauty sleep in order to function. You don't text or call them before a certain hour to avoid jeopardizing your friendship, and if they are awake in the morning for some godforsaken reason, you know to keep your distance. The fact of the matter is, chronic dozers don't sleep, we hibernate. If you're a hardcore sleeper, then you'll totally be able to relate to these 13 things.
10 Minimalist Travel Tips That Will Help You Save Bag Space
I used to be a notorious overpacker. What if I really need my Winter jacket on the beaches of Mexico if it got really cold one random night? Irrational. It didn't, and it wouldn't. The more I've traveled, the more I've realized just how nice it is to not worry about dealing with a bunch of unnecessary luggage. Half of the things I used to pack stayed buried in my suitcase the whole trip, just adding extra weight for absolutely no reason. I've started to (mostly) follow the minimalist approach to packing, and it's made traveling even more enjoyable. Here are 10 things you can do to pack lighter and travel better.
1. Plan your outfits ahead of time.
Instead of throwing in every article of clothing you've ever owned, count the number of days you're going to be gone, and plan your outfits for each day (and evening if necessary).
2. Pack only the essential toiletries.
If you're staying at a hotel, then they will have shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, and most likely lotion. Some hotels even have toothbrushes and toothpaste, but that's less common. Don't pack a ton of toiletries you know the place you're staying will have. It's a waste of space! Same goes for a blow dryer - most hotels will have these, and they take up a ton of room in your suitcase. If you're not staying at a place that will have toiletries, then invest in a travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and lotion.
3. Don't bring things you think you "might" need.
You probably won't need them, and unless you're going somewhere where you absolutely won't be able to buy them, skip the five extra phone chargers and just be good about keeping track of the one you do bring.
4. Pack a pair of shoes that go with a lot of outfits.
I always pack or wear a pair of shoes that are very versatile so that they can be dressed up or down and are comfortable for walking. Think: black ballet flats or low-heeled boots. Shoes take up a lot of suitcase space, so the fewer pairs, the better.
5. Don't bring tech you don't need.
If you're going on vacation, embrace it. Don't pack your laptop if you don't need it for work; instead, bring something smaller like an iPad if you need a tablet of some kind.
6. Bring ebooks instead of physical books.
I know, it's blasphemous. I get it, I am a huge reader, but I also travel pretty often, and I know the pains of trying to fit a hardback book into a carry on. You can load up your Kindle app with endless books without taking up any suitcase room at all, and trust me, the book will be the same either way.
7. Wear your heavier clothing on the plane.
If you're flying, wear your heavier/bulkier shoes and sweaters on the plane (bonus: you won't freeze when the airplane AC is blasting). That way, you don't have to stuff a giant jacket into a small bag, and you'll still get to bring your favorite pair of shoes on the trip without worrying about them weighing your luggage down.
8. Roll your clothes.
This is minimalist packing 101; instead of folding your clothes, roll them tightly up (like a sushi roll). This is more efficient space-wise and helps keep clothes from wrinkling.
9. Choose the right suitcase or bag.
Pick a bag that is spacious but compact; I like the carry-on-size bags that have a zipper that allows the bag to expand if need be. They are still small enough to put in an overhead compartment, but the extra space allows for some wiggle room.
10. Make a packing list.
Since you're cutting down the things you're bringing, it's smart to make a list of the actual essentials so that you're not forgetting anything absolutely necessary. Be selective with your list, and don't add gratuitous items you don't need. You can do this!
Get a Glimpse of a Day in the Life of a Seeing-Eye Dog in Training
The US's oldest seeing-eye dog school, aptly named The Seeing Eye, matches about 30 dogs every single month with the humans who need them. Opened in 1931 in New Jersey, the school is now run largely by director of canine development Peggy Gibbon and a team of dedicated dog-lovers. Aside from its storied history, Peggy told The Free Enterprise that the school's ownership policy is what really sets it apart from others. "When a blind person graduates with their dog they own the dog, no strings attached," she said. "We feel that is very important from a self-respect and independence issue."
Recently, the school took a photographer out on the town with one of the dogs to see a day in the life of training. They went around town, including in stores and on the streets. Scroll through to see the photos, and then learn a more comprehensive history about the school over on The Free Enterprise.

7 Expert Career Tips From Randi Zuckerberg
If you've always had an entrepreneurial itch you've been meaning to scratch, you're in luck. Tech mogul, business leader, and bestselling author Randi Zuckerberg is a host of the new show Quit Your Day Job on Oxygen. The series features millenial entrepreneurs looking to pitch their innovative ideas to angel financiers. After high-pressure debate, the investors reveal if the potential businesses will receive funding. The catch? The investors must unanimously agree in order for the start-ups to receive venture capital.
"What I love about Quit your Day Job is that it really shows the new face of entrepreneurship in the country," Zuckerberg says. "I think people have in their minds a stereotype of what an entrepreneur looks like, and I love that this show is completely changing that up." Below are seven expert career tips from the tycoon herself!
1. There's never a "perfect" time to go after your dreams.
"I think there's never a good time to be an entrepreneur, just like people tell you there's never a perfect time to have children. No matter when you do it, it's going to completely shake up everything in your life. So if you are sitting in your day job, and you're feeling unfulfilled, or you're feeling like your purpose in life is not being recognized, and there's something inside of you that's like, 'I've always wanted to open up my own restaurant,' or 'I have an idea for an app,' that's kind of burning in you? Then you know that you need to be an entrepreneur."
2. However, getting a little experience first isn't a bad idea.
"While it seems really sexy and exciting to start your own company or business right out of school (it seems like everyone's doing it!), there really is something to be said for getting a few years of bigger corporate experience. Of learning what it's really like to work with a team, to own a project, to have to manage exciting work and grunt work at the same time, and build up that expertise and credibility."
3. There are many tools at your disposal.
"What's wonderful today is that there are so many tools that make it so easy to be an entrepreneur. Really, you just need a WiFi connection and a cafe, and you can start a website or a business. [And] for example, if you want to set up a retail shop, that might feel really overwhelming to entrepreneurs because they think, 'Oh my God, I don't know how to set up a store!' or 'I don't know how to build my own website!' But it's really easy to start an Etsy store, and they manage everything for you. So all you have to do is create your product, or if you have a little more volume, there are sites like Shopify, which enable you to create a website for you to sell. So there are all of these things that might seem really overwhelming to you as an entrepreneur, but someone out there has already thought of a solution."
4. Don't be afraid to show who you are on social media.
"Being yourself is the best way to build a brand. Consumers are savvy. They know when you're being authentic and when they're being sold to. I think your best bet in this world of social media and where everything is under a microscopic scrutiny all the time is really just to be your authentic self and to let your personality shine through. Whether that's through shooting videos so people get to know you, or sharing more day-to-day images of your life on sites like Instagram. Letting people get to know you is 100 percent the best strategy for building your personal brand."
5. The "pick three" method is the best way to achieve work-life balance.
"I think the key is to aspire to have it all, to aspire to have balance, but be able to forgive yourself if you're not able to achieve that balance every single day. I have a mantra that I kind of developed maybe five or six years ago that I still repeat to myself on a daily basis. Every morning when I get up, I say, 'Work, sleep, family, friends, fitness - pick three.' So every single day, you get to pick three. It can be a different three every day. And then as long as it balances out in the long run, and that you picked all five at some point, you're in good shape."
6. A good leader is someone who stays true to his or her vision.
"I think a good leader is someone who stays true enough to their vision of the company that everyone else around them knows exactly what that vision is, but is also flexible enough that when they hit a roadblock in that vision, they won't just lay down and die. That they will find a way around it, or they will find a way to change."
7. Allow your personal and professional life to mix.
"The thing that I've learned is that you don't really have the luxury of having a personal and professional separate identity anymore, thanks to social media, thanks to Google searching, thanks to all of these tools that are out there. So instead of trying to spend a lot of effort to keep your personal and professional life separate, instead think about how you can be your best, three-dimensional, authentic self all the time. Because today you get one online identity, and that's what it is."

This $200 Kitchen Transformation Is Beyond Dramatic
Like a bad hair day, a bad kitchen casts an icky shadow over everything. Blogger Kate of House Mix couldn't stomach the salmon color of the kitchen in her new house and the dark cabinets "plagued" her every time she looked at them. Needing to overhaul the aesthetic of her kitchen quickly and affordably for the sake of her mental health, she turned to paint.
Kate painted her entire kitchen for a dramatic makeover. And when we say entire, we mean she painted every inch, including the walls, cabinets, and backsplash - how brilliant is it to simply paint over dated tile rather than rip it out and replace it?! The kitchen looks completely different and the total cost was just a mere $200! "It didn't require much skill or muscle, just patience and time," Kate said on House Mix. Check out some of the before and after pics here and head to House Mix for the complete tutorial.

DIY a Woven Wall Hanging . . . From a Bath Mat!
The following post was originally featured on brittanyMakes and written by blogger Brittany C. who is part of POPSUGAR Select Home.
Confession: I've been sitting on this project for over a month. A month! Why the wait, you ask? Well, I kinda feel like I cheated, although simultaneously I kinda feel like a genius. Take your pick - I won't be offended.
I wholeheartedly admire pure artisans, crafters, and makers. I admire their patience and persistence and adoration of what they do. I also admire people who pay a pretty penny for handcrafted goods, and I wish I had that pretty penny to support said makers, but alas I am not made of money, therefore if I want something I usually have to figure out how to hack it, DIY it, fake it, or give up on it. Consider this project a clever hack - mighty clever if you ask me!
I've gone and made a wall hanging (from a bath mat!). I am crazy in love with Rachel Duvall's textiles, so you can say this project piggybacks off her designs, specifically how the wall hanging is actually hung from the wall. Alright, enough words, let's get to the tutorial shall we?
These Cats Will Sit Wherever They Please Thank You Very Much
You know that saying, "if I fits, I sits"? (Or a variation of that saying.) That phrase was meant for cats, which is probably not surprising. If you're a cat owner, you know cats will fit their furry little bodies into any space they can find, regardless of size. My cat, for instance, is a sizable 18 pounds, but he insists on sleeping on my shoulder every night. Let me tell you, it's not a good fit, but he thinks it is, so I deal. The cats in this gallery are just like mine - they're hanging out wherever they "fit." Look through and prepare to laugh!
Disney's New Frozen Ride Will Be Everything You Dreamed It Would Be -and More
If you thought Frozen mania had reached its peak, think again. In June, Disney will unveil its new Frozen After Ever ride at Epcot, and it's even better than you imagined. The ride, part of the newly expanded Norway pavilion, where the Maelstrom ride's been located since 1988, will include many elements familiar to fans of the animated flick. We got a behind-the-wall look at the site and can tell you that it is destined to be the first stop for Frozen fans of any age during a visit to Disney World.
The ride itself will be very similar to the Maelstrom. Lauren Niederhiser, assistant project manager for Frozen Ever After, explained, "We're tweaking the ride system slightly, but it's going to be very similar, with some unexpected twists." It will be a boat adventure through Arendelle, with a visit up to Elsa's palace on North Mountain. The queen has invited everyone to a Winter in Summer celebration, and on the trip there, guests will encounter their favorite characters from the film singing some of their favorite songs. And speaking of the songs, Disney had the film's creators relyric some of the most popular songs to fit the ride. "You'll hear all of the classic songs that you remember from the movie, with a slight twist," Niederhiser shared.
The Norway pavilion will also house the Royal Sommerhus, a new meet-and-greet area for Anna and Elsa. Inspired by Norwegian architecture, the cabin will feature artifacts and pieces from the royal princesses' childhood. "As you travel through and see those items, you're eventually going to get to a royal reception hall," Niederhiser said. "And you'll get to meet Anna and Elsa there. They're going to greet you and have a really great guest experience with you in their home turf. In their cozy cabin. Really bringing you into that story."
Between the ride, the Royal Sommerhus, and the merchandise shop, we know where we're heading when the gates open!

Can a Costco Engagement Ring Beat One From Tiffany?
Does buying a ring from Costco make the whole proposal experience less romantic? After all, it is also a place where you buy bulk quantities of meat. In the meantime, Tiffany & Co. brings up dreamy images of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Lately, more attention has been drawn to these two very different retailers because of the multimillion-dollar lawsuit the luxury jeweler has brought against the wholesaler. The high-end jewelry company contends the "Tiffany" rings sold in Costco falsely lead people on to believe they are genuine Tiffany goods.
In the meantime, more people are finding that taking the practical route and shopping for a ring at the superstore is definitely better for the wallet, The Atlantic says. There is the assumption that Tiffany rings are overpriced, while you're getting more bang for your buck with a Costco ring of the same quality. And informal appraisals have found that to be true. Good Morning America appraised a diamond from Tiffany and one from Costco in 2005 and found that a particular diamond ring cost 58 percent more than its actual value at Tiffany, while another from Costco cost 17 percent under its real value.
What do you think - would you buy a ring from Costco over one from Tiffany?

20 Things That Happen When You Stay at a Sandals Resort
Whether you're 9 years old or 90 years old, you've probably seen an ad for Sandals Resorts. (Think iconic cursive logo set against a beachy backdrop.) While it may seem like a massive operation, the all-inclusive chain remains intimate and family-owned, just like when it was founded in 1981.
Today, the company boasts five brands and 24 properties throughout the Caribbean, including places like the Bahamas, Jamaica, and most recently, Grenada. Sandals invited me to visit their newest resort - formally called Sandals LaSource Grenada - in late April to find out what the property is actually like beyond the commercials. The place is as beautiful as you can imagine, and the clientele ranged from couple friends in their late 20s and 30s to elderly pairs celebrating their decades-long anniversaries.
Although Sandals often offers sales, prices aren't exactly cheap - you'll most likely drop more than $1,000 per night. If you're thinking of staying at a Sandals resort anytime soon, here's what you can expect.
The 8-Step Guide to Power Cleaning Your Bedroom in 1 Hour
There are two rooms in my apartment that I keep tidy (nearly) 24/7: the bathroom and the bedroom. The bathroom because it's purely the hygienic thing to do and the bedroom because it's where I sleep for nine hours and where I keep my personal items. Not to mention, I sprawl out on the bed daily to catch up on books, binge-watch Netflix, and play on my phone . . . so, in summary, it's the place I spend the most time. You're probably not so unlike me, which is exactly why it's important to show your bedroom a bit of TLC here and there. Dedicate one hour of deep cleaning to your main resting quarters - I can say with 100 percent surety you'll thank yourself when you're through!
This Pit Bull Is 100 Percent Done With Her Owner's Movie-Interrupting Nonsense
We've all got that one friend who can't sit through a film or TV show without talking; dogs are no different. Unfortunately for adopted Pit Bull Adelaide, her owner happens to be the chatty Cathy who can't sit through movie night! In this hilarious video, Adelaide has had enough of her human's talkative nonsense. Her face really gets the point across - you can practically hear her say, "Really, human? It's been a ruff day, so I really need one night to relax and get lost in a movie. Please keep it down." We could use some lessons in side-eye from Adelaide, but in the meantime we'll just use this video as instruction for shushing loud moviegoers at the theater.

Taylor Swift Loves This Tree-House-Scented Candle
Not only did we get a long look at Taylor Swift's stunning Beverly Hills home during her 73 Questions video for Vogue, but we also learned a lot about her! The singer divulged that her favorite candle is Byredo's Tree House Scented Candle ($80) - and while it's not cheap, it might be the only thing in her gorgeous house that we can actually afford! The artisan Byredo label is based out of Sweden, but the candles are handmade in France with signature black wax that can burn for 60 hours and placed in mouth-blown glass vessels. The Tree House scent that Taylor favors is inspired by one of Japanese architect Takashi Kobayashi's famous tree houses. As for scent, it seems Taylor is attracted to earthy and masculine blends, as the candle smells of leather and cedarwood with notes of bamboo, pimento, and hay.

10 Tips For Keeping Your Fig Tree Fit as a Fiddle
If your heart wants a fiddle leaf fig tree but your black thumb is standing in the way, San Francisco Bay Area editor and garden consultant Julie Chai can help! While she considers fiddle leaf fig trees to be reasonably low-maintenance, she insists on tried-and-true methods for keeping them healthy and beautiful. Anxious to master the art of indoor tree survival? See Julie's 10 tips for fiddle leaf fig tree success!
- POPSUGAR Home: What should people consider when searching for a spot to place their fiddle leaf fig tree?
Julie Chai: Fiddle leaf figs like it bright, so choose a spot where it'll get plenty of light for as much of the day as possible. Just make sure your tree won't have sun shining directly on it since that can damage leaves.
- PS: What do brown spots on leaves signify? Is there a way to stop the brown spots from spreading?
JC: Brown spots could indicate a number of problems, but they're generally related to too much or too little watering, and either of those could lead to disease. You'd need to troubleshoot, starting with making sure you're watering with the right frequency. Once you've resolved the source, which is most often water-related, the brown spots should stop.
- PS: If the large leaves begin to collect dust, is it important to wipe them? Does that really keep them from getting enough sun?
JC: You definitely want to keep your tree's leaves clean. Though dusty leaves could impact your plant's ability to absorb light to a degree, you'd need to accumulate quite a layer for that to be a major concern on its own. A bigger problem is that the dust could interfere with the plant's "breathing," and could also invite fungus and bacteria that may lead to pests and disease. I wipe my large-leaved plants with a soft, damp cloth - old cotton t-shirts are perfect for this! You could also use a duster. I even rinse my plants in the shower or hose them off outside a couple of times a year. If you do this, be sure you use lukewarm water - plants don't like cold showers any more than we do! 7 Things I Learned During My First Year Living in New York City
I'm a New York girl. I was born and raised on Long Island, a short distance away from Manhattan. But when I moved to the city last September, it was nothing like the place I had grown up knowing my entire life. It suddenly became this big and intimidating adult playground with infinite possibilities. Here's what my first year living in NYC has taught me, so far.
1. Independence is key
I'm already somewhat of a doer, but living in the city has instilled in me an entirely new level of independence. It's actually so empowering to be a working woman on the go in New York, like nothing and no one can stop you.
2. The food is amazing
Having an appetite in NYC is a wonderful thing. It can be seven in the morning or nine at night and there's always a joint open serving everything from pizza to Indian food. It's such a cultural melting pot and that's truly reflected in the myriad of cuisines here.
3. There's always something to do
Even if you'd consider yourself an introvert, there's an endless amount of things to do. On sunny days, I love sitting in Madison Square Park watching people dig into their Shake Shack boxes, and on snowy days, I enjoy strolling through Chelsea Market. Evenings consist of grabbing dinner with friends or catching a Broadway show with my parents, and the list goes on.
4. You can get around by walking
Sure, the subway system is great for traveling uptown and downtown, but I've learned that I prefer to walk. The stereotype about packed train cars is completely true, so I always carry a pair of comfy sneakers just in case I decide to go on an adventure.
5. Tourists stick out like sore thumbs
There's a clear difference between a local and a tourist. After living in New York, few things phase you. But tourists seem to look totally wonderstruck and, for lack of a better word, overwhelmed. However, it's cool to see out-of-towners marvel at the excitement the city has to offer.
6. My pace has gotten faster
All of a sudden, people who walk slow drive me nuts. I find myself moving at a rather speedy pace no matter where I'm going, even if there's no sense of urgency. But this is a common thread among New Yorkers - we have places to go and people to see!
7. It's the greatest city in the world
There's a reason some of the world's greatest icons like Billy Joel, Jay Z, and Frank Sinatra have written songs praising Manhattan. It is without a doubt the greatest city in the world, and I feel beyond fortunate that I get to call this awe-inspiring concrete jungle home.

12 Southwest Hacks For Cheap and Cheerful Flights
In the world of air travel, Southwest Airlines is the best option for vacationing on a budget. Offering low ticket fares, free choice seating, and friendly air crews, the Texas-based airline has found its way into the hearts of frequent flyers nationwide. While the airline's prices are already low, there are still additional ways to save money while traveling Southwest . . . and we've done all the digging for you. When it comes to air travel hacks, look no further.
- Buy online: The airline offers its lowest fares online, through the company website.
- Click to save: Southwest's Click 'N Save program allows you to customize your home airports, then receive notifications whenever a new deal is available based on those preferences. This will help you determine the absolute best time to book your flights.
- Get rewarded: The Rapid Rewards program allows you to accumulate points with every flight, hotel stay, and travel experience; the points can then be exchanged for more flights or other prizes.
- Compare airports: If you're able to fly out of multiple airports (SFO or OAK, LAX or BUR, etc.) when traveling, don't forget to price-check each applicable location.
- Collect while you eat: The Rapid Rewards Dining program allows you to earn points by eating at your favorite restaurants, so it could benefit you if you're a big fan of dining out.
- Check for special offers: On the Southwest webpage, there is a page labeled "Special Offers." Within this area, you can find cheap flights and discounted airfare.
- Use your right to refunds: Southwest policy helps prevent early bookers from being punished, thanks to its flight credit allowances. If you book a trip only for the ticket prices to drop a few weeks later, you can rebook your reservation and receive a refund in the form of flight credit.
- Save extra with plastic: Some credit cards offer incentives to travelers, so be sure to check with your bank before booking your trip. The Chase Rapid Rewards card will also ensure you free drink tickets on occasion!
- Drink on the holidays: According to one Quora user, there is a list of holidays on your seat-back card that notes when alcoholic drinks are free to flyers. Father's Day, Southwest's birthday, and other holidays are included!
- Know your airport: At some airports, Southwest flights will de-board from the front and back. Research ahead of time, because you might want to sit closer to the tail of the aircraft!
- Do in-flight reading: Southwest's publication, Southwest: The Magazine, often includes coupons for restaurants and local parking garages.
- Check your baggage: One of the few airlines that still allows free baggage checking, Southwest grants two checked luggage items per customer. Try to limit yourself to two checked bags and two carry-ons, though, because additional baggage costs $75 per item.
Coolest Cat Ever Waltzes Into a Dog Show on a Leash Wows Everyone
I tried time and time again to get one of my cats to walk on a leash, and it was a huge failure. Truthfully, no cat owner I know puts their cat on a leash. But you know what? The cat in this video - Boomer - is a pro on a leash, thanks to his animal-trainer human. Watch as they parade through a dog show and meet a whole bunch of dogs. Boomer takes it all in stride, playing with the pups and letting a few of them lick his head. It's almost cute enough to convince me to attempt leash-training my cat again. Keyword: almost.
10 Things You're Going to Want to Steal From Taylor Swift's Home
Taylor Swift just revealed dozens of fascinating facts about herself, such as the best gift she's ever received and bravest thing she's ever done, when interviewed for Vogue's 73 questions video series – but we could hardly pay attention to what Ms. Swift was saying because we were so distracted by her stunning home. The singer–songwriter's Beverly Hills abode is as timelessly stylish as she is. Period details mingle with plush furniture, antique decor, hardwood floors, rich patterns and textures (Taylor is a wallpaper lover!), and top of the line appliances. This place oozes with cozy charm! While we love every inch of her house, from the strategically scattered MTV Moonman awards to the outdoor living room, our favorite aspect of Taylor's home is how welcoming it is. Keep reading to see what we mean and keep clicking through for a look at our 10 favorite design elements.
6 Rite Aid Facts That Will Make You Love the Drugstore More Than Ever
What is it about Rite Aid that makes it so glorious? Whether you go for the extensive cosmetic selection, the ice cream counter, or the crazy-good discounts, there is something wonderful about walking into one of those stores. I'm a huge fan, to say the least. If you love Rite Aid like I do, you'll totally appreciate these interesting facts about the company.
1. Rite Aid was first called Rack Rite in 1958.
The store's purpose was to provide grocery stores with health and beauty aids. Then, in 1962, when fair trade laws that fixed minimum retail prices were repealed, discount stores became popular. The company then opened Thrif D Discount Center in Scranton, PA, which later became Rite Aid in 1968.
2. Stores across the country are undergoing some seriously cool makeovers.
It will still be the same Rite Aid you love, but many of the chain's stores are getting complete makeovers that will make your shopping experience more seamless. The cosmetics section now has a "nail bar" for mani/pedi products and there's a $1 section for cheap and fun needs.

3. The Rite Aid Foundation has donated over $80 million to organizations for children's health and well-being.
The company has a long-standing relationship with the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and is dedicated to providing kids with better lives. Pictured above are two children who received educational scholarships from the Rite Aid Foundation's KidCents program.
5. Thrifty ice cream has actually been around since the 1930s.
Rite Aid bought Thrifty drug stores over 60 years later, but kept the classic penny store ice cream that the chain was known for. Now a Rite Aid store is not complete without a Thrifty ice cream counter.

6. The store's Wellness+ Rewards Program is considered to have the best deals among all drugstores.
A free membership to the store's rewards program gives customers significant discounts that aren't experienced at any other drug store - we're talking 70 percent and upwards off of items.
