The Top 10 Wedding Registry Items Might Surprise You
Registering for your wedding is an exciting rite of passage - but it's also seriously overwhelming. There are so many categories and products to navigate, not to mention personalities to manage - your mom says no registry is complete without formal china, while your future spouse thinks registering for anything beyond the basics is extravagant. Yikes!
To figure out where to begin, we spoke to Pottery Barn's head tabletop designer Tony Leo. His first piece of advice was to register early. "Right after you're engaged is a great time to register. Some people may just want to get you gifts immediately and potentially double gift. Who doesn't love that?" On the same note, he advises registering for more than you need to give guests options and including items in a range of prices. "This will make your gift givers comfortable and not feel daunted by your big-ticket items."
As for his winning registering strategy, he advises, "Speak with one of the in-store associates and take your time and make the decision together. You want to make the right decisions." Don't worry if you have to come back to the store or tweak the registry online a few times. It's better to wait and determine what you're going to want in the long-term than to rush or pressure each other into selecting the wrong items.
One area he suggests registering for more items in is food prep and serving ware. "More people are entertaining at home, and a lot more people are cooking and taking cooking classes, so food-prep items like KitchenAid mixers, slow cookers, blenders, etc. are going to be increasingly hot." When it comes to basics, he loves Pottery Barn's designs because they "last a lifetime and are classic, livable, transitional to any occasion, and, of course, [they're] beautiful."

As with every season, work several inches of compost into the soil beds to keep them nutrient-dense and to help maintain the moisture and structure of the soil.

The stem of the start ought to be buried! While this seems slightly off of intuitive, burying the roots and the stem (up to the first leaves) actually helps establish a strong root system.

Tomatoes grow a staggering, unbelieveable amount of leaves that can grow into a tangled mess quickly. Keep them in check by watering the roots, not the leaves. Each day, pinch off non-flowering branches so the water is directed toward producing flowers and fruit, not foilage.
Stagger when and where you plant your tomatoes.
Stagger the tomato starts a foot to 18 inches apart along a trellis. And, plant only half of your tomatoes now and half later (several weeks to a month). This way, you aren't harvesting tons of tomatoes at the same time.

I have always fantasized about traveling across the country by train, so when my boyfriend, Johnny, suggested that we take Amtrak from San Francisco to New York City, I was all in. There have been many conversations around the web about what it's really like to take Amtrak for long trips, so I want to give you the most accurate and true depiction.
Johnny and I decided to get a roomette for the first and longest leg of our travel on the California Zephyr. We had the small room from Emeryville (the Amtrak station right outside of San Francisco) to Chicago for two days and two nights. After a seven-hour stop in Chicago, we rode the remaining 17 hours of our journey to NYC in coach seats. In total, our tickets for two people came out to $772. Not bad considering we were traveling for three and a half days and our meals were included with the roomette.

The Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin star always had a story to tell - way before her parents were taken from their home in Boston and deported to Colombia when she was just 14. She wanted to entertain and teach on stage and on set, but she probably never imagined that her narrative would end up on pen and paper, too. Her memoir, In the Country We Love, on sale May 3, is powerful - it had me in tears page after page - and so is Diane.
It takes just a few minutes on the phone for Diane to show she's sentimental, opinionated, and determined but also empathetic and totally lovable. In all honesty, if you ever have the chance to talk to her like I did, you will find yourself wishing you could be her best friend. She is wise beyond her 29 years and ready to share her life, full of challenges and obstacles, with anyone ready for it.
Here, she opens up about the harrowing experience of being an American citizen left behind after her parents' deportation but also about her hopes for immigration change, friendship, and having a support system that made her life today possible.
POPSUGAR: Your story is very personal and emotional. Can you tell us a little bit about what the process was like once you decided it was time to share it?
Diane Guerrero: It was really scary, definitely overwhelming, and at times I really wanted to stop. It was hard reliving all of those memories, but I think I realized that I was growing through the process and even though it was tough to deal with, at the end of the day, I felt better about everything; I felt one step closer to being at peace. The book doesn't only talk about the sad moments, but it also brings up really beautiful moments with my family and in my life, triumphs that my family and I lived, and those moments are not to be taken for granted. Throughout the book, I realized I needed to appreciate my family and my own story and say, "Wow, my story is valuable too, and I shouldn't feel ashamed of it. I should be proud."
PS: The book starts with you coming home and finding that your parents have been taken by immigration officials. It's a very visceral and palpable moment. That day was life-changing - how has that influenced everything you've done moving forward?
DG: It was something really tough to go through at such a young age, but it really helped me buckle down. It showed me that I was going to have to work really hard and that things weren't going to be easy, sugarcoated. Things were just very matter-of-fact. It taught me to be strong. Even though it was an incredibly sad moment, it was inspiring. It says: "OK, here I am, what am I going to do? Am I going to curl up in a ball and stay like this and let this take me down? Or am I going to keep living and try to find my way in the world and make things better for myself?" I think I chose the latter. It made me have a vision.
I knew that I wanted better for myself. I knew that one day I had to get my family back together. I knew that there was going to be a lot of obstacles. My family was now broken, and maybe I don't get my family together in the literal sense, but I can get them on the same page regarding our truths and experiences and accepting our situation, making the most of what we were given. I wanted to show that there were real families behind the issues. I also wanted to tell it from the perspective of a citizen child left behind. I wanted to answer those questions that people often have, like, "Why didn't you go back with your parents?" and "Why wasn't it easy for them to achieve citizenship?" This is not everyone's experience, but guess what? A lot of people share them.

I Watched Purple Rain With a Theater Full of Strangers and It Was Beautiful
Like a lot of people, I couldn't quite come to terms with Prince's passing. Prince was an American institution, like Mount Rushmore or the Golden Gate Bridge, and I guess I always felt that he would defy something so human such as death. He was this whimsical alien who had mastered multiple instruments and yet maintained an incomparable sense of humor that can sometimes be lacking in definitive geniuses like himself.
Since my parents were fans of his, I remember hearing Prince's songs from an early age. However, I didn't really understand his cultural impact until I got older. After enrolling in New York University's gender and sexuality studies program, I became interested in public figures, like Prince and David Bowie, who disregarded traditional gender performances and instead embraced androgyny. I hate that Prince will no longer be around to gift us with his electrifying music, but I'm equally upset about the fact that he defined mainstream pop culture while also being different, subversive, and a little weird . . . and we so desperately need that.
In an effort to confront and mourn the loss of the beloved icon, I attended one of AMC's special screenings of Purple Rain, and it was beautiful.
The particular screening I went to took place on Saturday evening in Lower Manhattan. As my boyfriend and I approached the theater, we noticed a line that went out from the entrance and practically spanned the length of a New York City block. Most of the people in line were wearing purple items of clothing, if not head-to-toe purple ensembles. One glance at the line and I knew that, yep, it was definitely the one we were supposed to wait in.

While printing out our tickets, we chatted up a woman who had already been to another screening the night before. She said the turnout had been about the same that night, and we all wondered if other larger theaters throughout the city had been as packed. Probably, I thought.
We finally made it inside just as the opening credits started rolling. An ocean of iPhone screens began snapping photos and the audience erupted in applause the second Prince began performing "Let's Go Crazy" in the movie's introductory scene. That immediate reaction kind of set the tone for the rest of the movie. After every performance and quotable quip, people cheered, maybe because we all knew that our catalog of Prince moments had abruptly become stagnant and incapable of growing beyond the existing material he had already put out into the world. We suddenly became very appreciative.
Some aspects of the movie haven't aged well, like the treatment of many of the female characters, but its campiness is juxtaposed by Prince's unparalleled ability to perform the hell out of everything. So we simply laughed at the clumsy editing or dialogue and instead celebrated what mattered: his unabashedly sexy and heartbreakingly vulnerable artistry. Everyone danced in their seats - or out of them - and sang loudly without embarrassment or shyness. My boyfriend even encountered one couple voraciously making out by the exit doors. It was everything Prince would have wanted.

Tips on How to Prep These Noodles
According to the cooking instructions on the package, al dente noodles should boiled for 8-10 minutes. I pulled mine at six minutes in hope that the noodles would finish in the sauce but they were already a little past al dente in texture. Next time (and there will be a next time), I'll try at the five-minute mark and let them finish in my sauce. I served mine with just roasted chicken, marinara sauce, and sprinkle of parmesan cheese. These noodles would also make a great cold Summer pasta salad with fresh corn, tomatoes, and a sprinkle of feta cheese. Just be sure as you cook them to check the firmness more frequently than traditional noodles.
Does It Taste Exactly Like Pasta?
