What I Wish I Had Known Before Buying a Brand-New Condo
When my husband and I were house-hunting, I had one demand: new construction. I'd spent most of my adulthood in "charming" apartments with "character," which is real estate code for tiny apartments with decades-old appliances.
For our first home, I wanted something brand new, and we lucked out: we found a condo that was so new it wasn't even built yet. The construction zone of a building had a model unit primed for viewings, and we went to look at it twice in two days before putting in an offer just 48 hours later.
The whole time, I'd been wearing rose-tinted glasses, confident that we'd avoided all the hiccups that come from buying an older home. No hidden lead paint for us! No replacing the furnace in the next 10 years! No creaks in our wood floors!
Sure, there were some serious benefits to a never-before-lived-in abode, but as a novice homeowner, I wasn't prepared for some of the surprises that revealed themselves along the way. Here, some of the biggest lessons learned after buying a newly minted condo.

Why Moving Across the Country After College Was the Best Thing I Ever Did
I was working my restaurant hostess job after my shift at my unpaid magazine internship in South Carolina when I got the text from my boyfriend: "I got the job." My heart raced as I rushed to the bathroom to sneak a moment of texting. "Oh my god," I wrote. "Let's move to San Francisco." It was the September of 2014 and I had graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill the previous May with a B.A. in Communication Studies, a minor in English, and a major dose of anxiety about what I was going to do with the rest of my life. The goals I had for myself only existed in my imagination as far-fetched dreams that I convinced myself wouldn't come true. I knew that I wanted to land my dream job in the journalism industry, but I didn't know quite how to get it - I did, however, know where I had to go, and that was anywhere but where I was. It was time for a change.
So approximately three weeks after my boyfriend sent me that text, we packed every inch of his 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit, hugged our parents hard, and started on our 2,701 mile drive from our hometown in North Carolina to California. I had no job, we had no place to live, we didn't know a single person in California - I had never even been before - but we did it anyway. The decision was terrifying, exhilarating, and without a doubt, the best one I have ever made.
Fast forward to now, and I still have to pinch myself when I think about what my life is like. I did get my dream job. I live in an apartment with a view in San Francisco (yes, SF has the most expensive rental market in the US, so yes, I live in a studio with my boyfriend, but that's another story). The point is that now I have the life that Post-Grad Me would have laughed at and said "yeah right" if Current Me would have told her two years ago. But somewhere between graduation and now, I realized three things. The first is that confidence is key (you know that "comparison is the thief of joy" quote? It's 100 percent true. Stop envying others' success and focus on your own). Two, you really can do anything you set your mind to. And three, your happiness is the most important thing and if you're unhappy, you have the power to change that. Who says you have to take a job in the city closest to you? Or buy a house by the time you're 30? Think about what really excites you, and do that instead.
I know that making such a huge move isn't something everyone can just do on a whim, and of course it helps that my boyfriend landed a job that allowed us to make the move in the first place, and I'm forever grateful that we got that initial opportunity. I'm proud that I worked hard to get to where I am now, and the first few months after such a big life transition didn't come without its fair share of struggles. I applied to jobs for months while I was completely broke and living in an apartment with nothing but an air mattress on the floor (thankfully, Taylor Swift's 1989 came out in October 2014, which is what got me through that). But every moment of frustration was worth it.
I say all this not to brag about my experience, but to encourage you to take the risk if you have a voice in the back of your head telling you to make a big change in your life after college graduation, whether that's a cross-country move, a gap year of traveling, or quitting your unsatisfactory job to try to land your dream one. The best part of fearing the unknown is discovering the amazing opportunities that are waiting for you. Just do it while you're young and you can. It might the best decision you ever make.
Guess How Long It Took For A Child To Completely Destroy This $15,000 Lego Statue
It doesn't take being a parent to know that kids are not only clumsy, but they also have poor impulse control. So bringing a child to a Lego exposition could be a tad bit tricky - especially since children are taught to actually play with the plastic building bricks. Unfortunately for one artist in China, a child's curiosity got the best of him and the artist's $15,000 Lego masterpiece paid the price.
After spending three days constructing a massive character from Zootopia out of thousands of pieces, the artist, named Zhao, was eager to show off his creation. Despite security ropes surrounding the statue, it only took one small child (within the expo's first hour!) to walk by and knock it over. The little boy climbed under the ropes to get a better look (sound familiar?) and accidentally pushed it. In a matter a seconds, all that was left of the impressive display was a heartbreaking pile of bricks. The child's parents offered to pay the artist for the damage, but Zhao declined any compensation.

Proof That Enrique Iglesias's Biggest Fan Is (and Always Has Been) Anna Kournikova
Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova may have been together for 15 years. . . or they may not have. The couple, who are usually super private about their relationship, have managed the seemingly impossible feat of maintaining almost complete seclusion as well as global fame. We don't know much about Enrique and Anna's romance, but she just made one very sweet - and very public - gesture that proves the duo are rock solid.
Anna took to social media this month not only to show off her dance moves, but also to show how much she loves Enrique's new music. After posting a video of her and Enrique's dog listening to Enrique and Pitbull's "Messin Around", it was time for Anna to take center stage.
Anna posted a series of new videos showing herself during two dance sessions to Enrique's latest solo single, "Duele el Corazón". The first was filmed, apparently, somewhere in the couple's home, as Anna rocked out alongside their dog. "I am still enjoying my Saturday night dancing with my crazy dog," she wrote. Later, Anna showed off her dance moves while listening to the track on a boat. "Dancing marathon continues," she captioned the shot. In a follow-up video, she used the hashtag #dancingfool.

How Shakira Stays So Damn Fit, According to Her Instagram
Everyone knows that Shakira's hips don't lie. But how does the 39-year-old mom of two stay so fit, you ask?
When she's not chasing after her sons with professional soccer player Gerard Piqué, Milan and Sasha, or breaking a sweat on stage, the Colombian-born singer is simply staying active - and varying her workouts. It doesn't matter if she's color coordinating her activewear for an outdoor session or showing off her curves in the dance studio, you can totally count on Shakira to inspire your fitness routine in more ways than one. Read on to see her favorite fun calorie-burning activities (according to her Instagram), and then take a scroll through her swoon-worthy family moments.
Photographic Evidence That Jennifer Lopez Has Not Aged a Day
If our lives depended on arranging photos of Jennifer Lopez in chronological order, we would fail. Though her style and hair color have certainly evolved through the years, her face and overall beauty have not changed - and we're starting to need more than her usual "sleep is very important" answer here. Perhaps we should also consult Thalia, while we're at it.
The sexy multihyphenate has long attracted theories that she's aging in reverse - or, you know, some sort of immortal vampire - so to further explore that argument, we've rounded up photos of her over the last few decades. The results are pretty telling, if we do say so ourselves.

Allow Queen Letizia to Show You the Royal Version of a Body-Con Dress
Queen Letizia would never sacrifice her sophistication, but that doesn't mean she doesn't enjoy adding a sexy touch to her look. Just days after opting for a formfitting crocodile suit, the stylish royal slipped into a deep magenta Felipe Varela dress that featured a three-quarter sleeve and tiered panels. Our first thought upon seeing her shift at the National Culture Awards: it's like a body-con mini - only a bit longer, and way more polished.
The queen's gemstone earrings, textured pumps, and sleek ostrich Mbu clutch were confirmation that she wasn't trying to re-create your average going-out ensemble. Even so, it's Letizia's bold confidence that allows her to meet a tight number like this one with elegance. Read on for an all-angles view.

The star tapped Pamella Rolland to design a satin sheath gown complete with a pink sash and embellishments along the plunging neckline.

Obviously, both ladies jumped at the chance, slipping into the dress for different events within the same week.
Kourtney selected it for Scott Disick's birthday in Las Vegas, while Irina wore it for the Solarin launch in London. While the supermodel played up the green theme in kelly ankle-strap heels, Kourtney turned up the glamour with fringed caged heels and oversize hoop earrings. Scroll to see the design's obvious versatility, then trace it back to where it got its start - on Donatella Versace's Spring '16 runway.

Pippa Middleton's Bridesmaid Dress Just Went on Sale - and Now We're Tempted to Buy It
While Kate Middleton claims the style spotlight on a regular day, for her own wedding, she shared it with her younger sister, Pippa Middleton. The royal's sibling turned heads when she held Kate's train, wearing a stunning Alexander McQueen sheath that highlighted all her curves - especially her toned backside. And now, a dress very similar to Pippa's is on sale, discounted by over $1,000. At the very least, we're tempted.
However, there are a few differences between Pippa's iconic number and the one that now rings in at $1,539 instead of the original $2,565. For starters, there are no famous buttons down the back, which drew more attention to the brunette beauty's assets. There's also no lace, and the cowl neck has been replaced by lapels. But still, it's a breathtaking piece, and the future wearer will no doubt be hearing compliments throughout the night.
Reflect back on Pippa's dress, then shop the similar piece if you're so inclined. The real bonus here? It definitely doesn't have to be a bridesmaid dress. Considering the white color, it would even look great on the bride!

10 Ways Being a Parent Is the Exact Same as Being the Designated Driver
It's a running joke that babies act like they're drunk all the time - they can't walk a straight line, they speak in gibberish, and they will fall asleep literally anywhere.
But if they are drunk, what does that make us? Turns out, parenthood is nearly identical to picking the short straw and being labeled the designated driver for the evening. That's right: you have to stay stone sober so you can make sure your little drunk "friend" doesn't do anything stupid.
Don't see the connection? Keep reading, and all will become painfully clear.
I've Never Bought My Children a Birthday Present and Don't Have Any Regrets
Let me start by saying that I love birthdays. I turn my own into a month-long affair (much to the chagrin of my family) and am more than happy to do so with yours too.
And when it comes to celebrating my sons' birthdays, I tend to go a bit overboard. We're talking parties with their classmates and teammates, paper invitations, a cake I spend more hours designing than I like to admit, and sugar cookies I'm still decorating at 1 a.m. the night before the party. There are balloons around the breakfast table when they wake up and a family celebration with grandparents at the kids' favorite restaurants. And don't forget the classroom celebrations at school. All of this is to say that I really and truly love celebrating birthdays.
But when it comes to my kids' big days, there's one thing that I don't do: gifts for the birthday boy.
It was never my intent to not buy my children birthday gifts, but starting with their first birthdays, I just didn't see the point. They were receiving more gifts from family and friends than they could ever need and already seemed overwhelmed with all of the new things coming their way. Fast forward a few years to their elementary school parties and that mountain of gifts just grew. Add the birthday dinners and parties into the mix, and it just seemed excessive - not to mention expensive. We live in NYC where parties at home are not an option and party spaces don't come cheap. So we never ended up buying them birthday gifts - and they never questioned it.
Sure, we buy them gifts during the holidays and they certainly receive things from us throughout the year - clothes, souvenirs on trips, that special jersey they want when their favorite team wins the Super Bowl - but they don't even ask where their birthday gift is from Mom and Dad, and if they did, I'd probably tell them they're attending it with their friends - it's called their party.
I don't know if I'll ever give them a gift that they unwrap on their birthday. Even when the parties fall away, they'll be getting more experiences than physical gifts - gifts they can experience with us like ball games, Broadway shows, and the like. We're still half a year away from the next family birthday, but I don't foresee myself modifying my policy any time soon.
Until then, I plan to continue my no-gifts-from-Mom-and-Dad policy as long as I can. So far, it's served me well.
18 Things That Only Old Souls Will Truly Understand
"Wait . . . you're only how old?!" If you've been hearing some variation of this phrase since before you can remember, then you're probably an old soul trapped in a young person's body. Maybe it's because you read too many books as a kid, or perhaps you were exposed to smooth jazz in the womb, but ever since childhood, you've stood out as wise beyond your years.
Some people might think you're boring, but the reality is that you simply don't have time for their nonsense - and there's nothing wrong with that. Here are 18 things you'll relate to if you're an old soul. (Go ahead and bookmark this list for after your afternoon nap.)
- You've always preferred sitting at the adults' table at holiday gatherings.
- As a kid, books were often preferable to the childish pursuits and concerns of your peers.
- You're a morning person, not a night owl. (What's an "all-nighter"? You'd much rather wake up at 5 a.m. to hit the library than spend all night studying.)
- Handwritten letters are a staple in your life, and no new technology will change that.
- Since you were a kid, people of all ages have come to you for sage advice; you probably gave relationship advice to your babysitter.
- You can't imagine dating somebody younger than you - you've always been attracted to older partners.
- Because you have a hard time relating to people your age, you tend to bond quickly with the few friends who understand you.
- You're used to not being taken seriously - it's been happening to you for your entire life. Nobody could ever believe that a 12-year-old was genuinely interested in becoming a librarian, learning to knit, or taking a swing-dance class.
- Co-workers and new acquaintances are always shocked to learn your age.
- You'd take a steaming cup of tea and a good book over a party any day.
- You're regularly accused of "mothering" people.
- While everybody else was going through a teenage rebellious phase, you totally understood the rules and regulations in your life.
- People call you "boring" so often, it's basically your middle name.
- You started consuming "grown-up" media like classic books and vintage films while your friends were still watching cartoons.
- Empathy is both your strength and your weakness. Current events affect you more than others, because you grasp the broader implications of natural disasters, war, and politics.
- It might be harder for you to embrace your silly side and "have fun," because you don't see the point.
- You've perfected your poker face after years of listening to vapid, shallow conversations. Who are the Kardashians, again?
- Other people worry about aging, but you embrace it - it feels like going home.

17 Hands-Down Hysterical Comics That Depict What Being a Mom Is Really Like
Cartoonist Chelsea Carr didn't always use her personal life as inspiration for her illustrations, but becoming a mom puts a whole new filter on life, and before she knew it, her comics evolved into cathartic yet hilarious riffs on the "joys" of pregnancy and parenthood.
Now, she has a website, Mom Comic, and she posts weekly strips about her experiences as a first-time mother. From the real reason new moms get a gym membership to flow charts on how to decide whether to vaccinate your kids, Carr's sense of humor rings true for anyone who's had a wooden toy thrown at their knee just when the previous bruise was starting to clear up.
Although fellow in-the-trenches parents are sure to relate, Carr told POPSUGAR that her goal in creating these comics is actually to give her toddler son an archive that he can enjoy when he's older. Until then, she picked out 17 of her favorite strips for us to enjoy right now.
This Woman Who Cut a Nursing Mom's Food For Her Proves That Not All Heroes Wear Capes
Once you become a mother, you unfortunately get accustomed to eating your once-hot meals completely cold a majority of the time. 5 Reasons Japan Should Be Your Next Solo Travel Spot
If you watched season five of Girls, in which Shoshanna is living a fabulously quirky lifestyle in Tokyo, Japan, you too might already be completely obsessed with the idea of exploring this fascinating country. What you might not know, however, is that while it's a destination full of adventure, culture, and beauty, it's also a really great place to visit alone.
Japan always seemed to me to be entirely too far away and too exotic to ever visit by myself, but when my brother - who lives in Luxembourg - married a lovely Japanese girl, I took it as a sign.
