This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate chip cookies are one of those staples that are simple yet complicated to make. If you've ever screwed up a whole batch, you already know that following the recipe to a T makes all the difference, and that small changes can have a big impact. For example, using bread flour instead of all-purpose flour creates a cake-like texture, adding more brown sugar than white leads to more chewiness, and incorporating secret ingredients (like instant coffee) alters the flavor in the best way. When seeking cookie advice, who better to turn to than some of the best celebrity cooks? Here's what Alton Brown, Mario Batali, and more experts recommend.
Alton Brown: With Bread Flour
Alton Brown's "The Chewy" chocolate chip cookie recipe has a five-star rating out of more than 1,100 reviews, so you know he's doing something right. To ensure chewiness, he uses bread flour instead of all-purpose flour ("Bread flour can absorb much more liquid than all-purpose flour," he explains), one whole egg plus one yolk ("Egg whites dry out baked goods"), and a whole cup of brown sugar ("The darker the sugar you use, the chewier the cookies are going to be"). His recipe takes a little more time than average (you have to chill the dough for one hour), but if you'd rather have melt-in-your-mouth chewy cookies than firmer cookies, it's worth it.
Giada De Laurentiis: Add Hazelnuts and Toffee
Giada always takes a classic recipe and puts a slight twist on it, making us say, "Why didn't we think of that?" Her hazelnut chocolate chip cookie recipe requires toasting the hazelnuts before chopoping them, which brings out their flavor even more. With a combination of semisweet chocolate chips, supersweet toffee candy, and crunchy hazelnuts, there's a more complex variety of flavors and textures than the average chocolate chip cookie.
Ina Garten: Chocolate Chunks Instead of Chips
Ina Garten's chocolate chip cookie recipe is pretty standard, except she opts for chunks instead of chips (and extralarge scoops of dough on the pan) for maximum meltiness throughout the cookie.
The Pioneer Woman: 3 Different Ways
The Pioneer Woman has a chocolate chip cookie recipe for every mood (and every preferred level of chocolate). Her basic chocolate chip cookie recipe is "my go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe when I need 'em in 30 minutes or less. It's like the Domino's Pizza of all my chocolate chip cookie recipes," she says. It's actually not so basic, though, because she sneaks in two secret ingredients: instant coffee granules and flaxseeds. Things get even more interesting with her browned butter chocolate chunk cookies, and her third recipe is on the next next level: tripe chocolate cookies.
Mario Batali: 100 Percent Italian
Are you ready for the list of unexpected ingredients in Mario Batali's chocolate chip cookies? Heavy cream, olive oil, ground cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cocoa powder. Batali's recipe is for traditional mostaccioli cookies, an Italian chocolate cookie popular during the holidays. As if the chocolate cookies aren't rich enough, they're topped with a smooth chocolate glaze. Needless to say, Mario's recipe is for chocolate-addicts only.
Bobby Flay: All About the Brown Sugar
Bobby Flay's chocolate chip cookies get a darker color and chewier consistency thanks to two different kinds of brown sugar (light and dark muscovado sugar). He also uses an ice cream scoop to dollop heaping spoonfuls of dough on the pan - with plenty of space in between each one - to ensure there's enough space for the cookies to spread.
Emeril: Supersized
"Why make a bunch of small cookies when you could make a giant cookie cake?" Emeril must have thought when he developed his popular giant chocolate chip cookie cake recipe. As long as you have a pizza pan, you won't have to make much more of an effort than you would with a regular recipe, and you'll have a homemade cookie cake that's infinitely better than store-bought.

Rachel Zoe Is Ready to Give Your Stroller a Glamorous Makeover
Plenty of fashion designers have lent their names to strollers before, but very few have the experience of actually trying to raise kids while remaining stylish behind their designs. Rachel Zoe did just that. The celebrity stylist, fashion designer, and former reality TV star may have just designed the most beautiful - and practical - car seat and stroller collection to hit the market. Using her understanding of the complexities of raising kids - Skyler Morrison, 5, and Kaius Jagger, 2 - but hoping to remain chic at the same time, Zoe teamed up with Maxi-Cosi and Quinny for the new collection.
"I live by and believe that every part of your life can and should be glamorous and stylish," Zoe explained at the launch event for the collection last week. "I don't think it means you have to spend more money necessarily. . . . That is just a mission that I wanted to accomplish."
It's a mission she accomplished with her signature clean style - think beautiful cognac leather, oversize gold detailing, tassels, and black and white fabric on the Quinny Mood stroller ($899), two Maxi-Cosi car seats ($399 each), and an oversize diaper bag ($229).
"There were more bells and whistles that [I wanted] on them, but for safety and certain comfort issues - practical reasons like we need our children to be able to sit in them and be able to poop on them - it couldn't have some of the things I dreamed," she shared.
As for what she looks for in a stroller, Zoe said it has evolved over the years. "I picked very often the prettiest, but not the most practical," she revealed. "I can't tell you how many of them my husband broke because he couldn't get them to open properly and he couldn't close them properly to get them in the trunk, so he left them on the side of the road. You have no idea. So then I went practical and then you realize how much easier your life is when they are practical."
The conversation quickly turned to one of Zoe's greatest accomplishments - also inspired by her boys - the nursery she opened in her office last year. "It's definitely the best thing I've ever done in my company," she told us. It's so popular, in fact, that it's about to undergo its first makeover before two more babies arrive this year. Upon its opening, Zoe said that the working parents in the company said the nursery helps them work better, but now the benefit appears to be extending to everyone. "Selfishly, we get to have babies around all the time," Zoe explained. "It's funny, because even the people in our office who don't have kids or don't necessarily want kids take a break to play with the babies."
We asked Zoe to answer our mommy lightning round. The one parenting skill she wishes she'd had? We think you'll be surprised!
- What's your go-to quick family dinner that everyone will eat? "Fresh Corn Grill in LA"
- When you have a parenting question, who do you have on speed dial? "Jenni Kayne"
- What's the one parenting skill you wish you had? "The ability to play sports."
- What food do you hide from the kids? "Sugar, candy. Sugar. Sugar. It's like crack!"
- Flats or heels? "Heels!" (she said with a laugh)
- Helicopter mom or free-range? "I'm a hybrid. If I could put a helmet on them morning, noon, and night, I would. If I wouldn't get arrested for it, I'd put them in a helmet all day."
- What's the kids' book you'd happily never read again? "Go the F*ck to Sleep. That's like a really harsh book. I think you're supposed to read that as a teenager. Not as a toddler."
- What's your biggest working mother guilt? "Working. Like now. I'm in New York and they're not here and it's horrible."
- What's the one thing about motherhood you wish someone told you? "How much it does change your life. Just in the best way. But it does change your life and anyone who tells you it doesn't is lying."
The Rachel Zoe x Quinny and Rachel Zoe x Maxi-Cosi collection will be available exclusively at Nordstrom, beginning June 15.
How Internet Commenters Helped Diagnose This Pregnant Woman's Serious Condition
They say never to use the internet to self-diagnose, but surely they aren't including the medical masterminds over at Reddit, right?
After a husband posted a video of his pregnant wife's stomach - which showed a 15-second snippet of her belly button being sucked in and pushed back out - to Reddit, one commenter sounded an alarm:
"That actually looks like a hernia," Reddit user knobbly_knees wrote. "If that's your wife, please get it looked at ASAP. Today."
Still, the husband, Reddit user rebelrockstar, assured the commenter that there was no reason to worry and that his wife, who can be heard laughing in the video, is actually a doctor: "Thanks for the concern! She is a MD though and it's 'normal.' She actually has a space between the muscles in her abdomen from the last pregnancy. Glad I'm a guy."
The idea that this belly button trick might not be a typical abnormality of pregnancy, however, must have encouraged the couple to get a second opinion because it wasn't long before the husband returned to the Reddit post with an update.
"You're right!" he wrote. "She said it is an umbilical hernia! F*ck, Reddit should just be my doctor."
So, although addressing medical concerns with qualified professionals is still the way to go, if you ever need a second, or third, opinion, Dr. Reddit will see you now.
This Slip'N Slide That Also Applies Sunscreen Is a Summer Game Changer
Even though we know we're supposed to, it can be tasking to continually reapply sunscreen when enjoying a day at the beach. That's especially true for little ones who are content swimming for hours on end and determined to avoid their parents' lathered hands. Nivea circumvented this issue with the Sunslide: a slide that simultaneously sprays those going down it with sunscreen.
According to Nivea, one slide ride applies the necessary amount of sunscreen - although kids are expected to wear swimming goggles to prevent any sort of eye irritation. Although we don't personally know how safe or effective the slide is, it is a really creative way to tackle sun protection while also being fun for kids.
Check out the slide in action in the video, above. We'll just be over here planning our own DIY sunscreen slide . . .
This Popular Pretzel Brand For Kids With Allergies May Actually Contain Peanut Residue
Parents of kids with peanut allergies have one more reason to triple-check their pantries today.
Frito-Lay announced a voluntary recall of select Rold Gold pretzels - a snack brand that's popular among families with nut allergies due to its usually allergy-free production process - due to a potential "undeclared peanut allergen."
How could this happen? According to the Food and Drug Administration, it is a direct result of one of the snack food brand's suppliers having certain lots of flour recalled for hidden peanut residue. "The Rold Gold products subject to the recall may have been produced using the recalled flour and, as a result, these Rold Gold products may contain low levels of undeclared peanut residue," the FDA issued in a statement.
The affected products were sold with a "guaranteed fresh" date ranging from June 28, 2016, through Aug. 23, 2016, on the front of the package. Directly underneath that date is a nine-digit manufacturing code that includes the numbers 32 in this position: x32xxxxxx.
Of those products fitting the above description, the specific brands recalled are:
- Rold Gold Tiny Twists - 1 oz., 2 oz., 16 oz., and 20 1/2 oz.
- Rold Gold Thins - 4 oz. and 16 oz.
- Rold Gold Sticks - 16 oz.
- Rold Gold Honey Wheat Braided - 10 oz.
Because Rold Gold Tiny Twists have also been sold in multipack offerings, the FDA has provided further instruction on how to read those labels on its website.
This is the second major recall regarding a peanut allergen this week; Hostess Brands also announced a voluntary recall of 710,000 cases of select snack cakes and doughnuts Monday over concerns that they may contain low levels of "undeclared peanut residue."
Thankfully, no illnesses as a direct result of the potential peanut allergen have been reported by Frito-Lay, but it is recommended that any product fitting the above description be discarded - especially if those eating its contents are allergic to peanuts.
Why Panera Put Peanut Butter on a Grilled Cheese Sandwich For a Child With Severe Allergies
One family is suing Panera Bread claiming that despite multiple warnings about their daughter's allergy, the little girl was given a meal that could have killed her.
The Boston family claims that their highly allergic 6-year-old daughter was served a grilled cheese sandwich complete with two scoops of peanut butter. In the lawsuit, her parents, John and Elissa Russo, state that their daughter was hospitalized overnight after biting into the sandwich.
According to her mom, the sandwich was ordered online, in which she specifically referenced her daughter's peanut allergy twice within the form. By the time anyone realized the extra ingredient had been added to the sandwich, the child had already bitten into it. They family says that she began to vomit and broke out in hives later that evening.
"Is this somebody doing this on purpose?" John later asked a manager. "Because it's two freakin' tablespoons of peanut butter on this sandwich, and it's a grilled cheese."
The manager reportedly apologized to him but blamed the mistake on a "language" issue. However, this explanation that an employee with limited English could have seen the note about "peanut" as a request to add it to the grilled cheese rather than to keep it away from the meal is "no excuse" to John. It didn't seem reasonable to the father because he looked up "allergy" in Spanish and Portuguese – the language the workers in question spoke – and realized how similar the translation (alergia) is to the English version.
"Panera takes the issue of food allergens, including the reported incident at our franchise bakery-cafe, very seriously," a spokesman said in an email to the Huffington Post. "We have procedures in place across the company to minimize exposure and risk for our guests and associates. We do not comment on pending litigation."
According to John, the family didn't plan to take legal actions until discovering that another child with peanut allergies was also served a grilled cheese with peanut butter after ordering the sandwich online less than a month after his daughter's episode. This child also went into an anaphylactic reaction and was hospitalized. While the two situations happened at different locations, the same franchise group owns both Paneras.
The Walking Dead Reenacted by Children Is Both Horrifying and Hilarious
In the wake of the show's divisive sixth season finale, it's hard to deny The Walking Dead's effect on viewers and pop culture en masse. Something that's a little more up for debate? One photographer's Walking Dead-inspired photo shoot . . . using children under the age of 7.
Mother Hubbard Photography recently shared a children's cosplay shoot inspired by the zombie show, which has since sparked both controversy and conversation. The photos depict popular characters from the series like Rick Grimes, Sasha Williams, and the villainous Negan.
In a Facebook caption, the photographer also clarified that the children weren't upset during the shoot, however, they were asked not to smile to better resemble the characters they were portraying. While fans of the show will likely find the whole series to be pretty hilarious, the photos do depict pretty graphic scenes and aspects of the series - like Negan's barbed wire adorned bat - that might not be funny to all parents.
Look ahead for photos from the shoot and prepare to feel a mess of conflicting emotions.
This Is 10 Months With Pediatric Cancer
My knowledge about pediatric cancer is limited. I know it's scary and sad and that the kids going through it are remarkable. But aside from that, as a parent, my brain just couldn't go there. That is until recently, as I have been able to witness the amazing Swearingen family, aka Logan's Liberators, in their fight against their 4-year-old son Logan's neuroblastoma diagnosis (not to mention the cystic fibrosis he was already battling), which has taught me some big lessons in life.
I've learned that parents of children with cancer have the hardest full-time job anyone could imagine: keeping their children alive. It's not something they applied for. They didn't submit résumés - they were handed this title without warning or qualifications, yet they do it as if they've been training for it their whole lives.
I've learned that a little boy named Logan is challenging what I thought it meant to be strong. I've learned that sometimes the littlest of people leave the biggest impact. I've learned that some win the fight and some lose. I've learned that the kindness of strangers does matter. I've learned that it's painful to witness such a small boy facing such a hard time but that we shouldn't turn our backs on these families just because it's hard to see.
I've also learned there is so much more we can be doing to help fight pediatric cancer, and if you'd like to help, Unravel Pediatric Cancer and Alex's Lemonade Stand are blazing the trail.
I've also learned that any of us could be appointed to this position in life. And while I simply cannot imagine what raising a child with cancer feels like on a day-to-day basis, these images from the last 10 months of this little guy's fight provide a tiny glimpse into not only what it involves and the courage it takes, but also the love that it endures - and as Logan's mom simply stated, "Love cannot be killed. Not even by cancer."
But, most importantly, I've learned that this is 10 months with pediatric cancer . . .
25 Selfish Things Moms Should Do For Themselves
Today's parents have it easy, according to those who went before us. Modern conveniences like video baby monitors, iPads, double electric breast pumps, and toys that do just about everything for you are designed to make our lives easier. But we are also living in the age of the child-centered home, where so much of what we do is dictated by our children's needs. So much so that mommy guilt prevents us from doing so many of the things we would want to do - acts that seem selfish when there are kids in the picture. "Shouldn't you be spending quality time with your kids instead of going for a manicure?" a little voice in our heads screams. "Shouldn't you be spending that money on an educational toy instead of a double latte?" it says.
It's hard to drown out the little voice, but we're here to tell that it's OK to be selfish. It's OK to do things for yourself. It's OK to do something that doesn't benefit anyone but Mom. Here are 25 things you should do for yourself (maybe not all at once, but over time) and never feel guilty about.
- Go out with the girls.
- Hire a babysitter so you can get some sleep.
- Keep the "good" cookies for yourself.
- Hurry the kids to bed so you can catch your favorite show (before your friends on Facebook start spoiling it).
- Skip the PTA meeting to get your nails done (just once, but it's OK).
- Forgo Kidz Bop in favor of the real thing so Mom can enjoy it too (just make a lot of noise during the bad words).
- Make your favorite foods instead of your kids'.
- Call on the grandparents (or friends or neighbors) for a sleepover so you can get a good night's sleep.
- Lock your bedroom door so you and your partner can get some much-needed private time.
- Lock the bathroom door so you can pee in peace.
- Notice there is only one scoop of ice cream left and pretend it is all gone so you can eat it.
- Spend your free time reading something that interests you - not a parenting article, not a news article, but something you want to read.
- Take time to exercise daily.
- Swap said exercise time to sit at a coffee shop and watch the world go by.
- Buy yourself a piece of jewelry instead of 10 pieces of junk jewelry for your kids.
- Take a vacation day from work for some retail therapy - for yourself.
- Sit in your empty home and enjoy the quiet time, not thinking about cleaning up.
- Delete your kids' shows from the DVR to make room for your shows.
- Send the kids outside to play so they don't mess up the rooms you just cleaned.
- Enjoy that business trip because it includes a quiet night of dinner and sleep by yourself.
- Get a massage just because.
- Scrap your plan for dinner and order a pizza when you've had a long/bad day.
- Ignore the to-do list for an hour and enjoy the peace and quiet of their being at school.
- Find an excuse to go out and wear your "pre-mom" clothes.
- Find time for a hobby that has nothing to do with work or your kids - just because you enjoy it.
17 Snacks With Fruit in Them That Your Kids Will Beg You For
Some kids are happy as a clam to sit and eat apple slices or a few cut grapes as a snack. Other kids - ahem, picky kids - may require a bit of trickery when it comes to getting their daily fruit intake.

Helen Mirren Defends Kim Kardashian's Naked Selfie, Says She Loves "Shameless Women"
Kim Kardashian may have faced some criticism for her naked selfie earlier this year, but Helen Mirren is coming to her defense. In a recent interview with UK's The Telegraph, Helen admitted, "I'm not into the Kardashians. It's a phenomenon I just don't find interesting, but - and this is the big word: B-U-T-T - it's wonderful that you're allowed to have a butt nowadays! Thanks to Madame Kardashian, and before her, J.Lo, we're also allowed to have thighs now, which is great too. It's very positive."
Helen explained how when she was growing up, "it was thought to be unbelievably sluttish to even have a bra strap showing" because "everything was about women conforming." She then added, "I love shameless women. Shameless and proud!" Most recently, Kim appeared on Kara Swisher's Recode Decode podcast and opened up about the infamous photo, saying she "truly was baffled when people still cared" because "they have seen me naked 500 times and the censor bar literally was probably more covering than a bikini." Check out even more stars who've come to her defense.

Clad in a sparkly, pinstriped pantsuit, the star was all smiles as she took the stage and hugged designer Diane von Fürstenberg before giving her acceptance speech. "As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life," she said. "When we were starting out in Destiny's Child, high-end labels, they didn't want to dress four black, country, curvy girls, and we couldn't afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams."
Also in attendance were Beyoncé's husband, Jay Z, and their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, who were seen arriving at the fete earlier that evening in coordinating outfits. See more of Beyoncé's night below, then check out her recent NYC outing with Jay Z.

Worst Sunscreens According to the EWG - Check Your Bottles!
Slathering on sunscreen before heading outside is one of the most effective ways to prevent skin cancer. But with so many brands and kinds of sunscreen, it's hard to know which one is the best. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has rated thousands of bottles with zero to two being considered great choices and seven to 10 ratings considered poor choices.
A sunscreen gets a negative rating from the EWG for three reasons:
- Sprays: Spray sunscreens are big no-nos since they pose risks if inhaled, plus it's hard to know if you've applied too little or missed a spot.
- High SPFs: SPF of 50+ only refers to how much protection the sunscreen offers against UVB rays (that burn the skin), but doesn't have anything to do with protection against UVA rays, the ones that penetrate deeply and cause skin aging and skin cancer. High SPFs also give consumers a false sense of protection, thinking they don't need to be applied as often.
- Chemicals: Oxybenzone may disrupt hormones, and retinyl palmitate, a vitamin A additive may speed up the development of skin cancer.
We've already shared a list of the safest beach and sport sunscreens, so here's a list of a few of the bottles that are rated seven to 10, with the EWG's warning: "overall this product scores poorly and is a bad choice for sun protection."
- Aveeno Active Naturals Hydrosport Wet Skin Spray, SPF 30: Rated 7
- Aveeno Active Naturals Protect + Hydrate Sunscreen, SPF 70: Rated 7
- Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 100: Rated 10
- Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous Spray Sunscreen, SPF 100: Rated 10
- Banana Boat Kids Max Protect & Play Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 100: Rated 10
- Banana Boat Ultra Defense Sheer Protect Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50: Rated 7

- Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 70+: Rated 7
- CVS Sensitive Skin Sun Lotion Sunscreen, SPF 60: Rated 10
- CVS Beach Guard Sun Lotion Sunscreen, SPF 70: Rated 7
- Equate Sport Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30: Rated 7
- L'Oreal Advanced Suncare Silky Sheer Lotion, SPF 100: Rated 7
- Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen, SPF 60+: Rated 10
- Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen, SPF 60+: Rated 10
- Neutrogena Age Shield Face Oil-Free Lotion Sunscreen, SPF 110: Rated 10
- Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen, SPF 55: Rated 7
- Neutrogena CoolDry Sport Sunscreen Spray, SPF 50: Rated 7
- NO-AD Sport Continuous Spray Sunscreen, SPF 30: Rated 7
- Panama Jack Sport Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 85: Rated 8
- Sun Bum Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 70: Rated 10
- Well at Walgreens Sport Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 70: Rated 7
These are just a few of the sunscreens that were rated seven to 10. If you want to look up a certain brand to see how it rates, go to the EWG website. Warning: many popular brands found at grocery stores and drugstores are not the safest choices.

If You Don't Run but Want to, This Guide Is For You
Running is a great way to get in shape since you can do it almost anywhere, and signing up for a 5K is one of the best ways to ensure you stick to your new workout goals. If you're new to running, however, there's nothing worse than slipping on your brand-new sneakers and setting out full speed, only to be out of breath a mere minute later. Staying motivated and encouraged is an important part of learning to love your new hobby, so whether you're more used to the couch than the treadmill or you've been on a long running hiatus, use these tips to help you run continuously and with confidence.

- Check with your doc: If you've never run before, it's important to make sure that there aren't any underlying conditions that will make it unsafe for you to start. Schedule a physical and go over your plans for running with your doctor so she can sign off or give you any recommendations regarding exercise.
- Don't just buy any shoe: There are tons of cute sneakers out there, but just because a pair has your favorite color combination doesn't mean it's right for your foot. Instead of blindly shopping online for what looks the best, take time to go to a specialty running-shoe store to get your gait analyzed. They'll also measure your foot to get the right size, since sometimes running-shoe sizes need to be bigger than your normal shoe size. Even if you don't buy from the shoe store, you'll know which brands and what kind of shoe to look for elsewhere.
- Sign up for a short race: If you're new to running, you should find a beginner-friendly race that'll keep you accountable and help you chart your progress. Fun runs like The Color Run and 5Ks are perfect ways to get excited about running and having a good time while you're at it.
- Have a plan: If you've signed up for a 5K, be sure to also find a beginner's 5K plan (like the our six-week 5K training plan) that will ease you into running. If you just want to be able to run for 30 minutes straight, this eight-week beginner running plan is made for you.
- Walk it out: If you've never run or it's been awhile, you're going to have to work your way up to a sustained jog. So instead of overexerting yourself straining to run a mile, start out with smaller goals, like running nonstop for one to five minutes and then walking a little until you catch your breath.
- Stick to a schedule: If you're serious about becoming a runner, practice makes perfect. Running won't get easier unless you are consistent. Try to fit in at least three runs a week to see improvements before you know it.
- Go with a friend: A friend with a similar or slightly faster pace can help you push yourself as you get better at your hobby. Plus, starting a new exercise routine with someone who's similarly motivated will keep you accountable on those days you just want to skip. If your friends aren't as enthusiastic about running as you are, keep an eye out for beginner running clubs at shoe stores, gyms, or your local community center.
- Stretch after every run: Many aches and pains can be prevented with a little prehab. To keep your muscles from being tight, make sure you stretch after every run with these cooldown stretches in order to help with muscle soreness and to loosen tight areas that can pull your joints and cause injury.

She's filmed weather updates using Star Wars and Batman v Superman puns, and she has now gone viral for her Harry Potter references. In a 70-second clip, Sian masterfully gives a weather update sprinkled with as many puns as she can from the series. Watch Princess Leia Get Burned in a Spoof Political Ad
Fans of Princess Leia, avert your ears and eyes. Your favorite galactic royalty was subjected to the political attack ad treatment in a video posted by the Star Wars channel to YouTube, and the wit is next level. Someone (we have our suspicions of which character could be the culprit) really doesn't want Leia to become "first senator of the New Republic." The "damaging" ad has some wisecracks, like that Princess Leia isn't actually a royal and how she married a "notorious scoundrel." Decide for yourself if you believe the cosmic mudslinging. If you're a fan of this video, be sure to check out more of the Star Wars show on its YouTube channel.
Hugh Hefner's Neighbor Just Bought the Playboy Mansion, Because Why Not
It's possibly the most well-known piece of real estate in the world, and it was finally purchased since being put on the market in January. The Playboy Mansion, located in Los Angeles's affluent Holmby Hills neighborhood, was bought by someone very close to The Girls Next Door - their neighbor. Daren Metropoulos of private equity firm Metropoulos & Co., which owns Hostess Brands, is set to take over the home but under one condition. According to The Wall Street Journal, Daren won't be able to move in until 90-year-old Hugh Hefner passes.
The property was originally listed for $200 million, but the amount it was purchased for is under wraps. The next-up owner is actually uninterested in the home's scandalous history and longtime Bunny residents. "The heritage of this property transcends its celebrity, and to have the opportunity to serve as its steward would be a true privilege," Daren told WSJ.
Set on just over five acres, the mansion was built in the mid-1920s and has since been passed along from one successful figure to another (philanthropists, entrepreneurs, inventors, and heirs have all lived there). And the estate doesn't stop at the multiwinged main mansion; it also includes commercial and outdoor kitchens, aviaries and animal pens, sprawling lawns and intricate gardens, a luxurious swimming pool complete with a grotto - oh, and a tennis court for good measure.
The house has hosted some of the most epic soirées in history and even served as the set of E!'s series The Girls Next Door. So while Daren claims to not care about all that, he can't deny that he's going to be living in the ultimate party house.

9 Things Robbers Look at When Canvassing Your Home
You've put heart, soul, and a lot of bucks into turning your house into a home. The last thing you want is for someone to break in and rob you. A home intruder is scary to even think about, but spending a few minutes of time recognizing and fixing ways your home is vulnerable can pay off big down the road.
Here are 9 ways you may be inadvertently making your home more attractive to thieves:
Rundown Front Door
Your front door is the first place burglars will look, and a dilapidated front door signals that your home is an easy target. A clean, painted front door gives the impression that the entire home is well-cared for and harder to breach.
Single Lock
Burglars look to see what kind of locks they'll have to navigate to enter, and when they see only the standard cylinder lock they're more likely to have a go than if there's also a padlock visible. In short: doubling up on locks makes your door physically more difficult to break into and your home less appealing to burglars.
Enticing Trash
The discarded boxes and bags from all your big-ticket purchases are like advertisements to burglars of the valuables inside your home. Prevent thieves from getting as excited over your new flat screen TV box as you are with your new TV by keeping this type of garbage inside until trash pickup day.
Dark Exteriors
Burglars don't like to risk being seen, so when you create a barrier of light around your home using motion sensor activated and basic exterior lights, you're creating a barrier around your home through which they're not likely to penetrate. Pay special attention to vulnerable areas like front and back doors and walkways.
Welcoming Landscaping
When planted beneath windows, bushes and shrubs are not only pretty, but they're an obstacle to climbing into windows. Burglars are especially deterred by the kind of greenery that has thorns or makes loud snapping noises. For trees reaching up to second story windows, be sure to clean up lower branches so they can't function as a ladder.
Overflowing Mailbox
Piles of mail are a sign that you're out of town and primed for a robbery. If you're going away for a while, use the USPS's Request Hold Mail service to stop delivery while you're gone. For shorter periods, a neighbor will likely be glad to pick up your deliveries.
Visible Interiors
You don't want burglars to get a peek at all the goodies you have inside your home, so shut the curtains, pull the shades, put a giant houseplant in front of a street-facing window – do whatever you have to do to keep unwanted eyes out. Be especially mindful at night when the dark sky and lit interior combine to create a fishbowl effect in your home.
Empty House
Encountering the resident is way more than most burglars are bargaining for. If they think you're in the house, they're staying out of it, so make it look like someone's home by turning on a light or two and even leaving on a TV or radio to make some noise. For prolonged periods away, you can use electronic timers to turn them on and off automatically.
Nonexistent Alarm System
They take a bit of financial investment, but a quality alarm system is a huge burglar deterrent, and a necessary one if you live in a high-crime neighborhood. Do your research and pick a reputable alarm company – thieves know the bad and bogus alarm system signs – and consider high-tech options, such as alarms with a camera that allow you to monitor your home from anywhere.

Hold Up - Maybe It Wasn't Really Arya Who Encountered the Waif on Game of Thrones
The seventh episode of Game of Thrones season six was, all things considered, a pretty tame one that focused mostly on plot setup for future episodes. (Margaery isn't actually brainwashed! The Hound is back and ready to fight! Jorah Mormont's baby cousin is a tiny badass!) However, the show's creators threw viewers for a loop with one troubling scene starring Arya Stark.
In the aforementioned scene, Arya is violently attacked by the vengeful Waif who nursed a grudge throughout their time together at the House of Black and White - the Waif appears to repeatedly stab Arya in her vital organs, eventually throwing her over a bridge into the Braavosi sea below. There has been speculation about why the Waif has it out for Arya so badly - including a complex theory that the two girls are different sides of Arya's personality and are actually the same person - but because of Arya's strange behavior before the attack, there's another explanation to consider.
The Theory
One intriguing theory suggests that the Waif's victim isn't actually Arya at all - rather, it is Jaqen H'ghar wearing Arya's face. Sure, that sounds a bit crazy, but is it really? Jaqen has already proven that he can transform into completely different people, and he owes a girl his life. Plus, prior to the attack, Arya behaves very oddly, styling her hair differently, tossing around money she doesn't possess, and staring longingly at the sights of Braavos (a city she's only lived in briefly). Check out the Reddit theory in full.
Some fans initially objected to the theory on account of the Hall of Faces only containing dead people. However, Jaqen has already exercised the power to "wear" Arya's face while she's still alive - a gift that most Faceless Men don't possess.
What It Means For Arya
If it is Jaqen who took the knife for Arya after all, then it could have many implications for the youngest Stark girl. If Jaqen, left stumbling through Braavos, makes his way to the House of Black and White, he'll likely be able to heal his own wounds and punish the Waif for disobeying his orders not to make Arya suffer. If he dies, he will have repaid his original debt to Arya and secured her passage home to Westeros; when she inevitably tries to find a ride home, she'll be all set to travel in comfort thanks to Jaqen's promise of payment to a greedy ship captain.
This theory is convincing because the Arya character behaves extremely uncharacteristically leading up to the altercation, especially for someone who is on the run from trained assassins - Arya isn't foolhardy, and it seems unlikely that she'd start being reckless right after betraying the God of Death. However, there are many explanations for Arya's weird behavior in the episode, including the simple fact that the Game of Thrones directors seem to enjoy playing with their audience. The idea of Jaqen taking Arya's place is certainly interesting and exactly the sort of plot twist that GOT fans adore, but we'll have to wait and find out! If it's true, the theory gives a whole new meaning to "valar morghulis" - all men must die, and some of them might just die in a girl's body.
5 Steps to Start Meditation, For Beginners
Everyone's talking about the benefits of meditation, but it can seem super intimidating if you've never tried it - or if you're going it alone! We talked to a certified meditation coach, Lynne Goldberg, to get her best tips for beginner meditators; we're definitely going to be putting these into practice ASAP.

Start With 10 Minutes
Seriously, though, it only takes 10 minutes. In some cases, Lynn mentioned, that's less time than you'd be waiting in line for a cappuccino, "so no excuses!"
Lynne's tip for beginners: "Try to get into it first thing in the morning, before your day gets away from you." You can use a meditation app, including OMG. I Can Meditate!, which features an alarm that wakes you up with a meditation.
Always Set an Intention
"Remember why it is that you want to learn to meditate in the first place," said Lynne. Do you want to relieve stress? Strengthen your relationships? Improve your health or your focus? One of the most important factors of your practice is your motivation, also called your intention. "This can be helpful when willpower isn't enough."
Don't Stress About Your Thoughts
"You will have thoughts, and that's OK!" said Lynne. Going into meditation with the expectations that you can suddenly control ALL your thoughts and completely empty your mind is unrealistic; as Lynne puts it, "that's not the goal." So what do you do with your thoughts? "We are just trying to notice them."
Keep Expectations Realistic
On that same note, don't expect to achieve enlightenment upon your first meditation session. "You wouldn't expect to run a marathon the first time you put on your running shoes, so don't expect to sit like a pretzel for hours at a time during your first meditation practice," said Lynne.
Just like building a muscle in an exercise, you're building your "attention muscle" with meditation, and that can take time. The key is to not psych yourself out, and to simply practice. Lynne reminds you to be easy on yourself and remember that each time your mind wanders and you come back to center: THAT is meditation!
Be Consistent
You know that old adage, "practice makes perfect?" While you're not striving for "perfection" in this case, it's essentially true for meditation. Lynne says that "meditation is something you should practice every day," noting that it's better to "practice for 10 minutes a day [daily], than once a week for an hour." Keep things short, but frequent and consistent; the more you do it, the better you'll feel.
This Is the Diet a New Study Suggests Might Stop Breast Cancer From Returning
Mediterranean diets have long been lauded for their balanced nutrients and even weight-loss benefits. A new study suggests another encouraging attribute of the diet: preventing breast cancer from returning. After three years of research, a group of doctors in Italy discovered that women with breast cancer who ate a Mediterranean diet did not see their cancer return.
The study tracked 307 women who were treated for breast cancer and separated the patients into two groups: 199 women who ate Mediterranean diets and 108 women who were asked to follow their typical diet. Those assigned the Mediterranean diet were given a meal plan rich in fruits and vegetables:
- Four portions of vegetables a day
- Three pieces of fruit a day
- One serving of grain a day
- Four servings of fish a week
- Two servings of red or processed meat a week
- Permitted one alcoholic drink a day
Surprisingly, none of the 199 women who ate the prescribed diet saw their breast cancer return, while 11 of the women who kept their normal diet suffered a relapse. When this particular study was presented to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, doctors were encouraged but also wary of its potential shortcomings.
Experts in breast cancer shared with the Guardian their hesitation to give too much validation to this study before more research is done. One of the issues experts pointed to was the short time in which patients were evaluated - in order for the results to be corroborated more accurately, the women should be monitored for longer than three years. Additionally, experts emphasized that current research identifies physical activity as the main factor in preventing breast cancer's return. While the claim that a Mediterranean diet is just as beneficial for women in remission requires more research and substantiation, it is certainly a positive discovery.
