How Pilates Became the Answer to My Summer Exercise Woes
For me, Summer is a really hard time to fit in workouts consistently. I'm traveling what seems like every other weekend and can't always make it to the gym or to a class. So in preparation for this annual pattern of mine, I set out to adopt a new regimen that I could take anywhere. Pilates was the answer, and the difference I've already seen in my body is pretty unbelievable.
Luckily I took a Pilates Reformer class before taking a mat class, because I found that I enjoyed it much more. After my first session was over, I sat down with the instructor to talk about which areas I really wanted to focus on: toning my glutes and thighs and improving my posture.
"[For better posture] you want to work the abs, because they support the spine and the back," Sylvia Ostrowska of Pilates by Silvia told me. "Always make sure your back and your abs are strong so there isn't an imbalance." She continued to explain that having a strong core will support the rest of the body and make you less likely to slouch throughout the day.
When I asked how to tone my legs without bulking them up, her response came as a surprise. "In Pilates, we use our own body weight, which will never make you bulky," she said. "You just have to make sure to do enough repetitions to feel the burn, and if you do it the right way 10 should be enough."
I feel stronger in my midsection and already see a change from the waist down, but the true test will come as Summer steams ahead. I'm confident that having the knowledge and skill to practice Pilates, whether in a studio or on a towel at the beach, will encourage me to make time for exercise no matter where my warm weather travels take me.
Golden Milk: the Antidepressant, Debloating, Weight-Loss Boosting Wonder Drink
Ready to simmer down and give your body a boost before bedtime? We've got the perfect, healthy nightcap for you, and you may have heard of it: golden milk.
Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, golden milk is a combination of the powerful spice turmeric, coconut milk, and sometimes coconut oil. Black pepper is often added (in small amounts) to increase the bioavailability of (i.e., your body's ability to absorb) the superspice turmeric. Creamy and spicy, soothing and warm - this delicious drink is more than just a tasty treat. Rich in electrolytes and digestive-aiding properties, your body is going to love every sip.
- Benefits of Turmeric: Turmeric's benefits are so good, one 2013 study said it's almost too good to be true. The anti-inflammatory spice has "shown therapeutic potential against a number of human diseases," including cancer, and could even help with Alzheimer's. Because of the reduced inflammation, turmeric can also help with gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort, and some studies have mentioned its help with weight loss. Also, some studies and sites have shown that turmeric has antidepressant properties, leading to better moods, less stress, better sleep, and improved brain health.
- Benefits of Coconut Oil: Similarly, coconut oil can help with digestion and gut health, thanks to its antimicrobial properties (which come from good fatty acids, MCFAs). The healthy fats can also raise your good cholesterol, HDL.
- Benefits of Coconut Milk: Did you know that coconut milk can also help with digestion? It "nourishes the digestive lining" with natural electrolytes and healthy fats, which can improve gut health and help with IBS. Like turmeric, it can help reduce inflammation, and even aid in weight loss. MCTs, another kind of fatty acid, are found in coconut milk and help with physical performance - allowing you to build muscle and lose fat.
Ready to mix up a batch? We like flavoring with a little honey or agave, and sometimes a bit vanilla bean or vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ginger. You'll be sweetly sipping your way to health in no time!
Target and Walmart Are the Latest Stores to Recall Frozen Vegetables
It seems that an unusually high number of foods have been recalled in the last month. Costco issued a warning about some of its frozen fruits and vegetables, then Nature Made also announced it was recalling some of its vitamins. Now, Target and Walmart have joined the growing list of frozen vegetable recalls across the country.
Concerned they might be contaminated with listeria, Target is recalling some of its Market Pantry products and Walmart is recalling some of its Great Value vegetables. Specifically the recall affects green peas mixed vegetables purchased between September, 2015 and June 2, 2016. A complete list of the recalled products, including their packaging code for reference, can be found on the FDA's website. Thankfully, no one has gotten sick from the vegetables, the recall is merely a precaution. If you have purchased any of the recalled products, you can return them for a full refund.

18 Iconic Celebrity Tweets That We've Been Blessed With in 2016
The beautiful thing about a social media platform like Twitter is, well, anything goes. This especially rings true in the celebrity world - the quick-fire nature of a tweet often gives stars a place to speak their minds immediately. Which . . . sometimes gets them in trouble. Sometimes it blows up into a whole ordeal, like when Kim Kardashian posted a totally nude Instagram photo that spurred lots of backlash and even more cries of support. Sometimes, it's a smaller thing, like Adele's brief but charming tweets about the Grammys. No matter what the content, though, these kinds of things are quite often very entertaining, and 2016 is no exception.

Keep Your Skin Clear and Glowing With This Blogger-Approved Routine
Achieving clear skin is nearly impossible without finding an effective routine and sticking to it. Maintaining a healthy diet and regular facial treatments are all a core part of stellar skin care, but the two work even better when used in conjunction with a religious regimen.
If you're on the road to clearing up your skin and need some effective tips on where to begin, beauty blogger Shani Grimmond shared her nighttime skin care habits, which she calls "the most important five minutes of the day."
Shani's steps to caring for her skin are fairly simple. First, she frees her face of makeup with a double cleansing ritual. This Is What Your Nails Will Look Like With Over 100 Coats of Polish
If you thought painting your nails with more than two coats of polish would result in a sticky disaster, just imagine what 116 coats would look like (if you're imagining insane . . . you're correct).
YouTube nail artist Christine Rotenberg of Simply Nailogical was challenged by her fans to paint her nails with every polish color she owns. She wouldn't be a famed beauty star with over one million YouTube followers if she didn't accept the test (and plus, who doesn't like a good challenge?). So she embarked on a day of layering on as many different lacquers as she could.
Christine sat in her office chair for nearly 12 hours, only briefly stopping to sip coffee and gnaw on pizza, and upon applying her final color, polish mountain was born. The final result resembled a gross hump-like glob of polish, similar in shape to bubble nails but significantly more goopy and WTF-worthy than the bubble style.
Watch the hilarious video of Christine completing the challenge like a champion. And don't be too surprised if you see other nail enthusiasts trying to outpaint her record!
11 DIY Beauty Remedies Your Grandma Always Talked About That Actually Work
Every abuela has one: that wild concoction she whips up from ingredients in her kitchen and swears by every time you have a pimple, dry skin, unruly hair - you name it. As kids, most of us rolled our eyes and went along with it, but we've done a little digging, and it turns out maybe Grandma wasn't so crazy after all. Many of those beauty recipes actually work! Warning: do try these 11 practices at home for smooth skin and silky hair - or get these beauty buys that are also grandma-approved.
1. Using mayonnaise as a deep conditioner for healthy hair.
According to hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins, this old-school method works because of the fat to protein ratio. "The oil softens the hair, making it shinier - and the protein in the eggs will make strands stronger." He recommends applying the treatment to dry hair, and leaving it on as a mask for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo twice, and condition afterwards. But, Hawkins notes, this treatment works best for hair that isn't fine or limp.
2. Dabbing nails in olive oil for a healthier look.
Nail expert Stephanie Stone debunked the myth (common in Dominican culture) that rubbing garlic on nails will make them strong (according to studies, it has no benefit). But, she says, applying olive oil (a popular DIY beauty ingredient in Puerto Rico) on nails and cuticles throughout the day is a great way to improve their health. "Keeping your hands and nails moisturized is key, especially if you're trying to repair damaged nail beds. I'd also recommend applying it lightly throughout the day instead of a full on soak. But consistency is key!"
3. Coconut oil as a body moisturizer.
"This one 100% works," says dermatologist (and Sofia Vergara's derm!) Dendy Engelman, M.D., of coconut oil for soft skin, a popular technique in many Latin American countries. "Coconut oil is mostly made up of saturated fats and medium-chain fatty acids, which help repair the skin barrier, trap water to hydrate skin, and also reduce inflammation. And recent studies show it's also a great treatment for eczema."
4. Adding honey to hair conditioner for softer tresses.
A custom common in Caribbean Latin America, honey is a natural moisturizer, which Hawkins says does work to help rehydrate your locks. And using unprocessed honey will give you an extra bonus: it's full of enzymes that will help create a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff.
5. Agua maravilla to fight blemishes.
Also known as witch hazel, this is common in many Latino families, especially from Puerto Rican and Dominican backgrounds. Engelman says it works because the mixture contains anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibacterial properties. Engelman also recommends Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Refreshingly Clean Towelettes ($6) to control blemishes and calm bug bites.
6. Washing hair with Coca-Cola for shine.
This is a long-time favorite technique among not just Latino families, but celebrities like Suki Waterhouse. Hairstylist Nunzio Saviano gives this traditional trick the thumbs up: "The acidity closes the hair cuticle, which makes it look healthy and shiny. But be careful: the sugar can leave your hair sticky, so you might need to rinse it out quickly. Apple cider vinegar is an alternative that might not be as messy!"
7. Beach sand as a skin exfoliant.
"Sand is essentially finely granulated rocks, so it's perfect to remove excess dry skin cells," Engelman says. "But because it's so abrasive, I'd only recommend you use it to exfoliate feet. It might be too harsh for other parts of your body."
8. Manzanilla grisi shampoo to lighten hair.
Saviano says that this traditionally Mexican and South American product - which contains Flor de Manzanilla and claims to both wash and lighten hair - does work, but he would use it sparingly. "This will maintain your tone and even lighten it at times, but if you use it too much, your color might become dull or even fade."
9. Grape skin paste for glowing skin.
Grapes are a gold mine, says Engelman. "They'll have a brightening effect over time because they contain vitamins B6, C, and A, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, selenium, and flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and remove toxins from the skin."
10. Sugar and lemon juice as an antiaging exfoliant.
According to Engelman, the sugar crystals act as an exfoliator, sloughing away dead skin, while the lemon juice helps peel away dead skin cells because of their content of alpha hydroxy acid (which is found in many antiaging treatments). Exfoliating is important, Engelman says, "because as we age, our skin doesn't shed as effectively. Plus, getting rid of dead cells helps your moisturizers penetrate better."
11. Avocado for healthy cuticles.
"Actually, rubbing avocado oil on cuticles is more effective than actual avocado," says Stone. But good news for avocado lovers: "Avocados in a healthy, balanced diet will help you see overall improvement in your hair, skin, and nails, too." Bring on the guacamole!

What I Did to Get (Permanent) Eyebrows on Fleek
It's a beauty woe that's all too familiar. It started in middle school, when I couldn't stand to look at the tiny feather boas sprouting above my eyes. Gwen Stefani was rocking pink parentheses, and I looked like Harrison Ford. I had to tweeze them. Because, you know, when you're in middle school you make responsible and wise decisions. Little did I know that tweezing was a gateway to overtweezing. I ended up looking like Clara Bow when all I wanted was a clean Audrey Hepburn.
Eventually I stared at my superskinny arches and realized that (believe me, I tried) there was little waxing or threading could do to help my already barely there brows. I watched YouTube videos of women filling in theirs like they'd been doing it since the dawn of man. But I wasn't exactly a makeup connoisseur. Probably more like a festival face-painter . . .
But I turned to makeup nonetheless - pencils for sketching my misaligned arches, powders for filling in those sexy bald spots, gels to keep unruly hairs in line, and waxes for building up color. Do you know how much time that takes? If I'm being honest, it takes up most of my morning routine. I could shave my entire body faster than it takes to create one perfectly arched brow.
After all that time each morning, I still found myself catching reflections of them in the rearview mirror. I looked like I'd passed out at a party too early and got attacked by a Sharpie. I had to switch up my morning eyebrow-creating routine. "Eyebrows" and "trial and error" are now so synonymous to me that I fear the bad brow days and cherish the good like loved ones.
While, naturally, perusing #eyebrowsonfleek on Instagram, I discovered microblading. The clouds opened above me, and light poured down on my thirsty arches. My brow-brush-wielding hands prayed for a paid vacation. So I decided to look into the technique.
This alternative tattooing method produces semipermanent results. However, unlike the block-like and harsh traditional eyebrow tats, microblading creates subtle, natural-looking brows by mimicking the strokes of eyebrow hairs.
Microblading requires a manual tool featuring several tiny needles in a row to deposit dye into the dermal second layer of the skin. The pen-like device yields amazingly natural-looking arches because the needles etch hyperprecise strokes that actually look like your brow hairs. Or, in my case, my would-be hairs.
Needless to say, I was intrigued, so when I got the opportunity to visit brow specialist Piret Aava for microblading, I decided to take the plunge and get my eyebrows tattooed. What? Tiny tattoos are in style. It's 2016. And I needed some fly eyebrows, stat.

The Scary Side Effect You Could Suffer After Your Next Massage
When I'm low on cash but highly stressed, I turn to affordable beauty treatments to soothe my frazzled nerves. One of my favorites is receiving a deep-tissue massage in Chinatown, NYC. I usually pay about $40 (tip included!) for a full hour of bliss. However, after a recent massage - which was wonderful, by the way - I started feeling sick. Really sick: about an hour after the rubdown, I threw up.
I couldn't believe it. I'd felt nauseated post-massage before, but never enough to actually hurl. And by the way, after puking, I felt great (from head to toe . . . stomach included). In attempts to find out why this happened to me, I conducted a deep Google search, which revealed nothing quite informative enough for my liking.
Luckily, when I'm desperate to solve a problem, my job as a beauty editor allows me to consult experts. I reached out to Heather Wyborny, massage therapist at the esteemed Golden Door spa in San Marcos, CA, to get to the bottom of this phenomenon.
First, I needed to know what a deep-tissue massage actually did, because, yes, I was just blindly going in for treatment. "A deep-tissue massage reduces heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of stress hormones, enhances immune function, boosts levels of endorphins and serotonin, and increases blood circulation," explained Wyborny. Therapists use firm, concentrated pressure to break through tension of deeper muscle and connective tissue - which can sometimes hurt.
That soreness is the most common side effect of deep tissue massage. My vom-fest was a pretty atypical reaction. On my short-lived Google search, I had read that nausea was due to "toxins being released into the body," which sounded a bit hokey to me. "Massage stimulates movement of the lymphatic system and byproducts of muscle metabolism," Wyborny clarified.
A deeper dig into the lymphatic system's functions revealed some interesting information. In fact, one of the primary responsibilities of this part of the body is responsible for removing waste from the blood. Lymph then shuttles said waste off to be filtered through the liver and kidneys, and eventually excreted.
This waste can be anything from allergens and excess fat to viruses and bacteria. If you have too much lymph in your body, it can build up in the tissues under the skin's surface - the same tissues that are manipulated during a massage. It would make sense, then, that a deep-tissue rubdown would cause your body to suddenly be flooded with those toxins in your lymph, making you suddenly feel icky. Not as hokey as I thought!
Headaches aren't uncommon post-massage, especially if your therapist does a lot of deep work in the neck and shoulders, Wyborny remarked. But nausea occurs less frequently, she said, and that one could feel queasy because of dehydration.
Drinking lots of water before and after your appointment is an obvious solution to remedy dehydration (and in turn, nausea). Wyborny also advises sipping on ginger tea and "doing some deep breathing exercises and stretches" after your massage to allay any signs of illness.
If, like me, you've experienced an upset stomach after what was supposed to be a relaxing experience, you might want to consider switching up the style of massage therapy you receive. Wyborny recommended opting for a light Swedish massage. This technique consists of long, gliding strokes instead of the more probing pressure of deep-tissue work. "Or just focus on scalp or feet," suggested Wyborny.
I definitely haven't sworn off massages for good - and I'll even be going back to my spot in Chinatown. But I'll be sure I'm plenty hydrated first. Otherwise, I'll be searching for a new way to de-stress on the cheap! Pedicure, anyone?
This Is Not a Drill: Outback Is Releasing a Bloomin' Onion Topped With Bacon Cheese Fries
"How can we make a heaping pile of fried onions even more decadent and unhealthy?" Outback Steakhouse must have thought to itself before creating the bacon-cheese-fries-topped Bloomin' Onion, complete with spicy ranch dressing. Hitting menus on June 21, this monster of an appetizer is appropriately named the Loaded Bloom, and it was "inspired by Outback's upcoming, limited time 'Big Australia' menu which features bigger, Aussie-sized portions," an Outback rep told People. How do you feel about this creation?
1 Woman Tinted Her Eyebrows While Waiting For Her C-Section at the Hospital
Is there ever a good time to get an eyebrow tint? For mom and Aussie beauty blogger Mollie Makeup that happened to be right before she gave birth to her baby girl. While waiting to get her C-section (the hospital was apparently quite busy), she was bored. So she went wandering around the venue and claims to have found a beauty salon. And since she forgot to get her eyebrows tinted before going to the hospital (as one does), she decided to do it right then and there. She posted this hilarious video on Facebook explaining the situation while the beauty process was happening.
She is not the only woman to share beauty moments prelabor. One woman gave us a peek into her makeup routine prebirth and one writer actually detailed out a list of what to pack before you head to the hospital. Making sure you feel your best before meeting your newborn (and taking pictures!) is important. So we say do what you need to do, ladies! And if that includes an impromptu eyebrow tint, so be it.
The 1 Thing Guy Fieri Almost Always Does Before Grilling
Guy Fieri's secret to grilling success starts with the marinade, as seen in almost all of his top recipes on the Food Network. These particular tips will help you see marinades in a whole new light and will inspire you to try out something new the next time you grill.
- Don't waste a drop of your marinade. Guy isn't about wasting one drop of marinade. For his Grilled Tequila Garlic Lime Flank Steak, he recommends marinating the steak in the fridge for two hours, then at room temperature for another 30-45 minutes. While the steak grills, the marinade is transferred to a pot, brought to a boil, strained, and poured over the finished steak. Talk about flavor!
- Process the marinade. Despise chopping? Throw all the marinade ingredients in a processor and process until smooth, like Guy does in his Grilled Chicken Tortilla Soup.
- Try a quick marinade when you're in a time crunch. Don't have time to let the meat soak up the marinade? No worries! In Guy's Grilled Drunken Shrimp Tacos recipe, the shrimp get tossed and coated in the marinade before being skewered and grilled.
- Marinate salmon. It only takes 30 minutes to one hour to marinate salmon, as seen in this Salmon Gyros recipe. The best part is you probably already have all the ingredients at home: garlic salt, lemon zest, and lemon juice are the essentials.
- Try yogurt as a marinade. Freshly toasted and ground spices and yogurt are the key ingredients in a lamb marinade for Grilled Tandoori.
- Brine a pork loin chop. While not technically a marinade, the flavorful brine called for in Stuffed Double-Cut Pork Loin Chops transforms a regular old pork chop into something filled with sage, mustard, and garlic flavor. The trick is slitting a pocket into each chop to allow those flavors to get into every crevice.
- Balsamic glaze your veggies. All vegetables, whether root veggies or Summer squash and zucchini, benefit from marinating in a sweet balsamic glaze, as evidenced in his Balsamic Grilled Vegetables recipe.
Smart Publix Shoppers Take Advantage of These Grocery Hacks
Shopping at Publix is a transformative experience, at least for me. As a former resident of Florida, I sorely miss shopping at Publix and actually make a point to stop by anytime I'm back. The supermarket chain native to the South - namely Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama - is known for its exceptional customer service and meticulously organized aisles. It's also famous for its easy, money-saving offerings and generous coupons. These are some of my favorite money-saving hacks and ways to make the grocery shopping experience the best it can be.
- Go paperless! Digitally organize coupons and create shopping lists on the Publix app.
- Publix has a very liberal return policy: return any opened or unopened item even without a receipt.
- If you forgot your coupon at home, some stores will refund you the difference you would have saved if you bring the coupon in with your receipt on your next shopping trip.
- Publix's own brand items are really good for a reason: they're actually made by the same leading producers that make similar products for big name brands. So you're basically getting the same product at a lower cost and with different packaging.
- Purchase $10 worth of groceries on any given Thursday and you'll be eligible to receive that week's "penny item," a product that you can purchase for just one penny. The actual coupon for the penny item can be found in your local newspaper.
- For items that are on sale if you buy two of them at a time, you can still just get one and Publix will proportionately mark it down.
- Publix accepts other competitors' coupons, like Target and Whole Foods!
- You can also combine a coupon from another store with a Publix coupon for extra savings on just one item.
- Stop wasting time and energy cutting and preparing raw meat before cooking it. The butchers can cut any packaged meat you bring them.
- If you're a frequent Publix shopper, you know that cookbooks are no longer necessary if you pick up some of the store's delicious and easy recipes. The Aprons, as they're referred to, are usually available at the front of the store.
- To show your gratitude to the wonderful Publix employees, simply compliment an employee to the store manager and that employee will be rewarded with a free deli meal.
15 Things You Probably Never Knew About Coffee

You drink it all the time, but how much do you really know about coffee? These 15 fun facts (and hacks!) might surprise you.
- It's the second most valuable commodity in the world, behind oil.
- You can chill coffee beans or grounds for a more flavorful brew at home.
- Coffee used to be classified as a "possible carcinogen leading to bladder cancer," but the World Health Organization's research has concluded that is (thankfully) not the case.
- You can actually die from too much coffee. But don't worry, you'd have to drink more than 100 cups to consume the lethal dose of caffeine.
- A grande coffee from Starbucks has the four times the amount of caffeine as a Red Bull.
- There are essentially two types of coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta. Technically, there are dozens of coffee-bean varieties, but these are the two that are cultivated for drinking. Robusta beans have twice the amount of caffeine as Arabica.
- Aerating your coffee is the easiest way to transform it from flat to flavorful and slightly frothy.
- Coffee beans come from a plant. Basically, coffee is a cherry-like fruit that has a coffee bean in the center - check it out!

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Eggs
Eggs can either be incredibly boring or really exciting. If you'd rather have the latter but you're 100 percent tired of your go-to plain scramble or omelet, these chef recipes should help. Breathe some new life into your breakfast or brunch routine with these creative takes on eggs from Giada De Laurentiis, Alton Brown, Chrissy Teigen, and more.
Alton Brown: Benedict From Scratch
If you've never attempted homemade eggs benedict for fear of the effort, Alton Brown's benedict recipe will convince you it's entirely worth it. While he goes as far as making his own English muffins, you could certainly use store-bought bread but make the hollandaise from scratch.
Mario Batali: Baked With Herbs and Cheese
Mario Batali's eggs in hell recipe is the Italian chef's take on the traditional Middle Eastern dish shakshuka, pictured above. While his scrambled egg recipe involves truffles (classic Mario), the flavor in this skillet recipe comes from plenty of garlic, jalapeños, chili flakes, parmesan, and basil.
Ree Drummond: Omelet With a Twist
The Pioneer Woman's style of cooking usually involves simple ingredients you probably have in your pantry that are used in creative recipes you hadn't thought of before. Such is the case with her Sleepin'-In Omelet, which is a casserole-like baked egg dish topped with pieces of onion rolls, cheddar cheese, and chives. This is what you'd want to serve if you're having a group breakfast or brunch, and the best part is you can make it the day before and keep it in the fridge before popping it in the oven to bake in the morning.
Chrissy Teigen: Nontraditional Shakshuka
Another popular take on shakshuka is Chrissy Teigen's spicy tomato skillet eggs with prosciutto, which you'll find on page 24 of her cookbook, Cravings. "I always have the ingredients for this divine, painfully simple crowd-pleaser. Sopping the eggy tomato sauce with focaccia *almost* makes me not regret inviting someone into my home/getting out of bed," the always-hilarious author wrote in the recipe's intro. Catch a glimpse of the eggs sizzling in the pan from a video Chrissy shared on Instagram.
Giada De Laurentiis: In a Muffin Tin
If grab-and-go breakfasts are your favorite, you'll love Giada's mini frittatas recipe. Made in a muffin tin, the egg muffins are full of sliced ham, fresh parsley, and (of course) parmesan cheese. You can make a batch of them on Sunday and have breakfast ready for the whole week.
Gordon Ramsay: Custard-Like Scramble
There's really nothing like Gordon Ramsay's scrambled egg recipe. You'll forget everything you thought you knew about such a basic breakfast and immediately impress yourself with a chef-quality meal. Nothing about Gordon's recipe is expected, from the tool (pot instead of pan) to the secret ingredient (spoiler: it's crème fraiche).

9 Ways to Stop Living the Lazy-Girl Fashion Life and Get Your Act Together
If there's one thing in this world I excel at, it's being lazy. I've waited for the laundry basket to overflow before throwing clothes in the wash. I've canceled party plans in favor of sitting on the couch watching Netflix. I snooze my alarm, chill out in my towel, and have perfected the art of picking things up with my feet. (I could probably text with my toes by now, but I'm too lazy to try.)
I didn't see any of this an issue until recently, when I realized - BAM! - my laziness had somehow creeped its way into my wardrobe. Around last Fall, I had adopted the ultimate lazy girl motto, comfort over everything, but looking back at photos, it dawned on me: comfy ain't always cute.
No matter what they call them, joggers are probably just sweatpants. Oversize sweaters will always be baggy. And some outfits just look better with heels.
I'm trying to remind myself of the real reason I fell in love with fashion: as a way of expressing myself; it's the message I'm sending out to world. Do I want really want that message to be "Girl who woke up late and threw on the only thing that wasn't wrinkled"? Nope, not really. I'd much rather be polished, professional, and always put-together.
I imagine many women, especially as they grow older, have a hard time letting the lazy girl go, so I compiled some tips I'm using to stay on track. Because while I won't be giving up binge-watching (too many shows, not enough time) or towel chilling (some of my best thinking is done then), it's time to say goodbye and embrace the fierce, fashionable woman I know I can be.
I Tried Making Poke Cake For the First Time and Here's What Happened
One day, the Fitness senior editor, Michele Foley, stopped me in the hallway to tell me about poke cake. "Have you ever had it? It's the best. cake. I've. ever. eaten. Cherry Jell-O and yellow cake mix with Cool Whip as the frosting. Total Midwest appeal. It came out light and airy and the Jell-O gave it tartness." Poking a cake and filling it with Jell-O sounded terrible to me and boggled my mind that two seemingly opposite textures could EVER work out together. Nonetheless, if the fitness editor vouched for something so passionately, I couldn't blow it off! I had to conduct a group taste test. Despite my initial bias, I gathered the ingredients anyway and hoped for the best.
I am the biggest fan of yellow box cake, even more than homemade cake, because it's moist and ultra vanilla-y without fail. The experiment started off happily. I whisked the cake mix, melted butter (I used Trader Joe's Cultured Salted Butter, because I was feeling fancy), and eggs together and transferred the batter to a buttered casserole dish. When I pulled the cake out of the oven, the air around me smelled like the '90s and childhood birthdays. I got drunk with nostalgia before my stomach tightened with the realization that I could screw up this perfectly good cake by dumping a whole bunch of Jell-O on top of it.
As the cake cooled by the window, I turned my attention to the next step. At this time, I should probably admit that I didn't go for brand-named Jell-O. I opted for a raspberry-flavored jel dessert, since that's all my closest grocery store carried. I dumped the contents in boiling water, stirred it around, and tasted it, just to see how bad I was about to ruin my cake. Only . . . the naturally flavored jel dessert tasted like raspberry Sweetarts (if that ever were to exist) with no funny aftertaste. I relaxed a little. This experiment might go over well!
I poked the cake a little too excessively on top, because I really wanted to let that jel dessert seep into the cake, even though Kraft recommends 1/2-inch intervals. Unlike Jell-O, which sets in the fridge, this product practically gels up within minutes. Despite my best intentions, as soon as I poured it over the cake, some of it seeped into the holes, but a lot of it set on top of the cake in a thin layer. I panicked, before thinking, "Whatever! I'm just going to ice this sucker anyway and see what happens."
As I cut into the cake and took out the first slice, I did notice how moist the cake turned out. However, as you can see, this particular poke cake doesn't have the stunning fluorescent streaks that make poke cake recipes famous. I was devastated, but only for a second, because I took a bite and became a poke cake believer. First off, unlike most cakes, this one isn't sweet. It's light and refreshing, almost like you are eating clouds. Until, like me, you have two huge slices and need to loosen your belt a notch. There's no odd Jell-O consistency in the cake. All you get is the semisalty vanilla cake combined with the slightly tart raspberry flavor. The whipped topping (found in the freezer section of most groceries) offered more of a textural component than flavor; it's remarkably fluffy.
Every taster at POPSUGAR gave it rave reviews, though there was one complaint and that's the cake doesn't have any textural contrast. If you need a little crunch in your cake, add some sprinkles on top! I may have missed out on the beautiful streaks this round. I'll keep practicing until I get that skill down, because I definitely intend to make this cake again and again. I'm convinced there's no better crowd-pleaser than this "recipe."
Kate Middleton's Lace Dress Is Exactly What You'll Want to Wear to Your Own Wedding
Kate Middleton just made a case for going the casual route at your own wedding - and she wasn't even trying. The duchess stepped out for day two of the Royal Ascot, looking light and cheery as ever in her Dolce & Gabbana design, which she wore to the queen's birthday concert just one month ago. While she originally covered it up with a red Zara coat, this number clearly deserves the spotlight.
It gets a modest touch from the long-sleeved silhouette, but the design's sheer details and breezy skirt, which cuts off midshin, makes it trendy and a touch sexy. Of course Kate played to the elegant side, finishing her outfit with a Jane Taylor hat, neutral pumps, L.K. Bennett box clutch, pearl drop earrings, and her sapphire engagement ring. Read on for an all-angles view, then shop the look for Summer, or simply to ditch the floor-sweeping gown at your own nuptials.

This Chinese Star Had a $31 Million Bridal Reception Last Year - but She Can't Stop Wearing Wedding Dresses
Remember Angelababy, otherwise known as the "Kim Kardashian of China"? She's a 27-year-old singer, actress, and model who married actor Huang Xiaoming last year. Their nuptials, which reportedly cost $31 million, were out of this world, and the bride wore a mesmerizing Dior gown to match.
While that design had a 10-foot train, Angelababy's since cooled it with the floor-sweeping veils. Even so, her look for the Shanghai International Film Festival opening ceremony was lavish enough to wear down the aisle, complete with a voluminous skirt and intricate embellishments.
Angelababy joined her husband on the red carpet, showing off her number with a pair of drop diamond earrings. And get this: just one day before, the star slipped into a lace Zuhair Murad dress that was equally fit for a wedding. Read on to see Angelababy's latest bridal ensemble. Even if she's no longer celebrating her special day, her elegant outfits are certainly still dream worthy.
Princess Marie of Denmark Could Teach Kate Middleton a Styling Trick or 2
Princess Marie of Denmark didn't step into the spotlight until 2005, when she began dating Prince Joachim. After becoming his second wife when the pair tied the knot in 2008, Marie began showing off a handful of glamorous dresses. She fully embraced her royal wardrobe but kept things fresh. One of her favorite shades is white, but she opts for two-piece sets, beadwork, or cocktail numbers that feel more like jazzy eveningwear than wedding attire. When it comes to daytime events, Marie's a step ahead - she's been rocking lined blazers, pleats, and velvet for years. Plus, there's no hat too high or headband too dramatic for Marie. Read on to see some of her most graceful fashion moments, from which we've gleaned a styling tip or two.

This Girl Jumps Through Hoops Just to Copy Kate Middleton's Outfits
Kate Middleton's biggest fashion fan isn't a member of the royal court, and we can't believe we're saying this, but it isn't us either - we just admire her looks from afar. In fact, it's Amanda Bell, a 21-year-old girl living in LA with a penchant for sophisticated dresses and an admiration for the way Kate pulls them off.
Amanda has admitted to spending roughly $2,250 scooping up copies of Kate's most iconic dresses, though there are times she'll splurge on a real designer item. Take the Anita Dongre dress Kate wore on the royal tour of India and Bhutan. Amanda paid $380 for the genuine piece and has already deemed it her favorite one.
While Amanda's hobby started in 2012 when she first laid eyes on Kate's engagement dress, we don't think she'll quit anytime soon. In fact, she's still on the waiting list for the L.K. Bennett number the duchess wore when the Obamas visited Kensington Palace.
Read on to see how much attention Amanda pays to detail, re-creating Kate's looks one by one, and compare them to the original version. She might just make you do a double take.
Why I Held My Son Up by One Leg at Target
It had to be done. I had no other choice.
Let me explain why I had to hold my son up by one leg in the middle of Target . . .
Just yesterday I found myself at Target. I had somehow managed to find a shopping cart that didn't have a squeaky wheel. I was so proud of myself. And because it didn't squeal like an upset child the whole way down the aisle, I had high hopes for my little shopping trip.
Owen sat sweetly in the front of the cart as I began to look at all of the different cards and party supplies. As I passed red balloons and bright green and blue gift bags, I noticed the bright fluorescent lights and elevator-sounding music that was playing. Owen didn't seem to notice. He was too busy playing with his little black seat belt. I turned my attention back to the party supplies. And for a whole minute I peacefully enjoyed all the different party options.
Owen was being quiet. That should have been my first clue.
If you are a mother, then you know that when there is silence, a mother's attention is needed. But by the time my eyes found Owen, he was escaping from his seat like a little wiggle worm. In a split second, he was standing up in the front of the cart, backward, and trying to break free from his seat belt! When I started to grab him, I had to unbuckle him in order to help him not be stuck.
If Owen could talk, I know he would have yelled, "Freedom!" Because the moment I unfastened his seat belt, he jumped. He dove toward the back of the cart head first as he tried to make his escape.
I literally caught him by one leg.
It had to be done. I had no other choice. I had to grab my son by one leg and hold him up midair. There I was, holding my 9-month-old upside down in the middle of Target.
Half snickering to myself, the rhyme, "Catch a tiger by his toe . . . " came to mind. But before I burst into laughter, I started freaking out. What if someone saw me? I could just imagine someone speaking over the intercom, "Crazy mom on aisle three! Get her!"
Thankfully no one saw our little stunt.

Why You Need to Stop Telling Your Kids They're Special
Every parent thinks that their own child's the best, but sharing that sentiment may be doing more harm than good. A new study conducted by the University of Amsterdam has found that narcissism is an aquired trait that stems from children "internalizing parents' inflated views of them," as reported in US News and World Report.
Researchers surveyed 565 children between the ages of 7 and 11, as well as their parents, and found a correlation between those moms and dads who have an inflated view of their children and those same kids expressing narcissistic tendencies. So next time you gush over what's truthfully a mediocre piece of artwork or just-OK test score, think twice. You may be overindulging an ego that doesn't need it.
The 1 Move That Made Me a Better Mom, Instantly
I love Facebook. Like a lot. So much so that I found myself spending all sorts of time looking at it, searching it, and bringing it into just about every conversation. Something had to give. Except that I did not want to be one of those folks who says, "I'm done!" and then ridicules everyone else still stuck on Fakebook. Because the truth is that I do think that social media is a wonderful thing. Heck, I kind of love Facebook. I just needed to ease up the amount of time I was spending on it. So I decided to keep my account but delete the app from my phone. I can still check in on my computer as often as I want, but do I? Rarely. And the effect of this simple decision went far beyond improving my mental state; it also improved my maternal state. It may sound crazy, but I know I'm a better mom now that I don't have 24/7 access to my Facebook news feed. Here's why.

3 Ways the "Magical Fruit" Can Help You Lose Weight
Beans may be known mostly for their unpleasant odiferous side effect when eaten, but beans are actually nutritious little gems. If you follow these tips, you can eat beans without the bloat, which means you can reap these weight-loss benefits. Here are three reasons to plate-up with beans.
Hello, Fiber!
While the fiber content of beans helps keep things moving, it also gives you that "I'm full" feeling. Satiating your hunger is the key to preventing overeating and consuming too many calories for the day. But you don't just need to eat a plate of plain beans; in fact, you can add beans to smoothies - you won't be able to taste them at all. Or throw them in your scrambled eggs, add them to soups, pasta dishes, or as a topping on homemade pizza.

Beans aren't just for vegetarians. Omnivores can soak up bean protein as well. High-protein beans help keep energy and blood-sugar levels stable, which helps prevent cravings for sugary pick-me-ups that tend to be high in calories and void of nutrition. Since a couple hours between meals tends to be common crash times, including beans for breakfast and lunch will keep you peppy until your next meal. Whip up a sweet potato, chickpea, and quinoa veggie burger, a plate of polenta with beans, or a satisfying bowl of slow cooker chickpea coconut curry.

When trying to beat the scale, you need to make sure that you're eating quality foods low in calories and high in nutrition. To breathe some inspiration into your dinner rotation, we've gathered only the best pork chop recipes from some of our favorite celebrity chefs and Food Network experts. Alton Brown: Molasses and Coffee Glazed

Giada De Laurentiis: Parmesan Crusted
Giada is among the loyal group that believes parmesan cheese makes everything better, including pork. Her parmesan-crusted pork chop recipe calls for parmesan plus Italian breadcrumbs, ensuring a crispy and flavor-loaded exterior as they crisp up in an oiled pan.
Sunny Anderson: Simply Grilled
The best part about Sunny Anderson's easy grilled pork chop recipe is that even if you don't have a grill or grill pan, you can make the recipe using a regular pan, too. After you let the chops sit in a marinade of honey, oil, apple cider vinegar, and cumin for about an hour, you're on your way to superquick and easy pork chops, perfect for a weeknight dinner.
Tyler Florence: Smothered
Chef Tyler Florence knows you should never let pan drippings go to waste. His smothered pork chop is indeed smothered in a creamy gravy made by deglazing the pan with chicken broth, then adding buttermilk. It's what to make when you really need indulgent, home-style comfort food in your life.
