The Ultimate Parenting Truth 1 Mom Learned From Vacuum Lines
Nineteen years ago, when Diane Dekker Redlegs's five children ranged from 6 months to 5 years in age, the ambitious mom and her husband, Scott, loaded them into the car to visit relatives.
As the young parents toured their aunt's impressive home, Diane couldn't help but think about how wonderful it would be to have such a large, stunning house.
"What stuck out the most in my mind and sparked a completely different envy than just the size of the house, was the vacuum lines that remained in the carpet in the formal dining room," Diane wrote on Facebook in an April post that is now being shared by many moms. "I remember thinking to myself, 'Oh my gosh! Her vacuum lines are still in her carpet probably a week or more after she vacuumed! What I wouldn't give to clean my house and have it stay magazine perfect for more than five minutes!'"
Although she couldn't wait for the day that her kids didn't instantly disrupt everything she worked so hard to clean, there was something major that Diane didn't realize at the time: in order to have a home that was always spotless, it would mean that her kids no longer lived there.
"I wanted those things because the everyday struggles of five loads of laundry, toys everywhere, mouths to feed, meals to prepare, and beds to make were overwhelming to me, and the beauty of a pristine home was something only dreams were made of," Diane wrote. "It took me 20 minutes in each room just to find the floor before I could vacuum it. I never grasped (no matter how bad I wanted vacuum lines to stay in my carpet) that my kids would one day grow up and leave."
Despite experienced moms warning Diane that it all goes by so fast, she quickly realized how hard it is for young mothers to fully understand that.
"That's when I realized that vacuum lines are lonely," Diane wrote. "Legos, dirty clothes, mouths to feed, and backpacks to get ready are sometimes very overwhelming, but they're never, ever lonely and that what the old ladies had been telling me was true!"
Diane reflected that the Legos slowly disappeared and were replaced by video games, then football gear, and finally by empty bedrooms waiting for a visit back home from college.
"The loads of laundry gradually got smaller, the dirty dishes were less and the endless treasures of Pokémon cards, or rock collections all disappeared," Diane wrote. "Everything sits magazine ready in my home now and I appreciate and love this time of my life, I only wish I had known the cost of vacuum lines, because then I surely wouldn't have wanted this day to come as fast as it did."

But no matter whose look you most admire, there are only so many episodes to watch, and you've got a lifetime of outfits ahead of you.
That's why we've sorted the bloggers we follow into four groups: Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. Their go-to ensembles fit the signature styles of our favorite TV characters. The Cutest Part of This Maternity Photo Isn't Even the Baby Bump
My sister's maternity pics...I'm cracking up 😂😂 http://pic.twitter.com/4zbiCvwyfd
- tally (@Ataliagarcia5) July 25, 2016
When Whitney Bowie and her husband, Jeremy, decided to do a maternity photo shoot, like many soon-to-be parents with pets, they included their dog, a rat terrier named Lucy, in some of the snaps. Pretty typical, right?
Well, when the Texas couple went in for one of the most standard pregnancy shots - of the zoomed-in baby bump with both mom and dad's hands resting on it - little Lucy must have felt a bit left out. As the photographer snapped, Lucy placed her paw on the belly, too.
Thankfully, Whitney's teenage sister saw the priceless photo and didn't waste time sharing it on Twitter, where it's since been retweeted 44,000 times and has more than 110,000 "likes."
We have a feeling a lot more pregnant pet owners are going to be requesting this photo from here on out.

What This Mom Did With a Dairy Aisle's Worth of Her Breast Milk Will Warm Your Heart
Demi Frandsen spent 10 months in the NICU with her son Leo, who was born two months early and diagnosed with gastroschisis - a condition in which there is not enough skin to grow over exposed organs within the abdominal wall. During those 10 months at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, NE, Leo never said a word, but he did learn to sign "Mom," got to go outside for the first time, and was even able to drink a bit of his mother's breast milk from a Q-tip. Although Leo couldn't handle much milk, Frandsen would pump every three hours - even waking herself up in the middle of the night - to donate her milk to help other mothers and babies.
On Oct. 22, Leo unexpectedly passed away, and through her grief and the difficulty of the situation, Frandsen continued to pump her breast milk for donation. "My final donation was 17,503 ounces . . . which is 131 gallons. So, a dairy aisle, basically," Fransden told WOWT News.

Beyoncé's Lyricist Finally Speaks Out About "Becky With the Good Hair"
Beyoncé isn't an easy person to read. She rarely does interviews. And gives us sneak peeks into her glamorous life and travels on her Tumblr and Instagram pages. But when she dropped her Lemonade album with an accompanying HBO special in April, she gave us a few clues that life isn't always easy for her either. The internet erupted into speculations and rumors that some of the songs suggested Jay Z cheated on the Queen Bey.
There was one particular lyric in the song "Sorry" that caused the most drama. "They sneaking out the back door. He only want me when I'm not there. He better call Becky with the good hair," she belted.
Within hours of the song's debut, fashion designer Rachel Roy inserted herself into the situation by captioning a (now-deleted) Instagram: "Good hair don't care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. Live in the light #nodramaqueens." This made Beyoncé's fans attack Rachel on social media, accusing her of being Becky.
Women of color also pointed out that the lyric had a deeper meaning about race and hair. We explain it all in detail here.
Months later, it still has not been confirmed that Lemonade is biographical, that Jay Z cheated, or that Rachel is Becky. Yet, we finally have a clue about the situation, thanks to an interview Entertainment Weekly did with Diana Gordon, the lyricist behind the song.
When asked what she thought about the public's reaction to the Becky phrase, she said: "I laughed, like this is so silly. Where are we living? I was like, 'What day in age from that lyric do you get all of this information?' Is it really telling you all that much, accusing people?"
Hear that? "Becky" may not have had all of these hidden meanings about infidelity and racial cues, as Diana questioned how deeply we read into her words. Still, her casual response sheds some light on the buzzed-about topic.
EW also asked Diana if she and Beyoncé ever discussed the response this lyric caused. "No," Diana said. "I don't think she expected it. I saw her at her Formation tour. She had a pajama party; we laughed, we danced, we hugged it out."
Diana went on: "But I didn't say much about it at the time because I wanted to give her space. The idea started in my mind but it's not mine anymore. It was very funny and amusing to me to watch it spread over the world. If it's not going to be me saying it, and the one person in the world who can say it is Beyoncé, I was f-ing happy. With Beyoncé, I feel like the songs we worked on were specifically for her."
Interpret that as you wish, internet!
Kim Kardashian's Unexpectedly Edgy Haircut Was Actually a Wig
After first revealing it in a sensual video on Snapchat, Kim Kardashian stepped out in West Hollywood earlier this week rocking a new lob haircut. We were surprised by the style: it was a complete departure from the star's usual look. Instead of spotlighting her mane's volume or adding texture to her strands, Kim opted for a supersleek, blunt, asymmetrical 'do.
However, the wily media mogul fooled us all! The gorgeous look was actually a wig. "Everyone is saying I chopped my hair," she revealed in a post to her website, "but it's all an illusion!"
However, she did say that she has wanted to snip her strands "for SO long," so perhaps a true haircut is in her future.
We're still looking to Kim's wig as a source of inspiration, though! The style switch came courtesy of stylist Chris Appleton, who left Kim's hairpiece two inches longer on the right side of her head. The finished result was super edgy - a refreshing choice for the reality star - but still quite sophisticated, so we expect that Kanye West was a fan of the change, too. Read on to see the chic lob from all angles.
Why Snapchat Filters Are More Problematic Than Pretty
If I nailed a perfect cat eye, I couldn't resist photographing it for Instagram. The sun couldn't shine without me flipping on my front cam to test out the lighting, and I wouldn't dare take a bite of my Sunday brunch before documenting it first. To say I was an avid selfie taker was an understatement. But when I landed my first full-time job, my dedication to snapping these pictures diminished.
Waking up every morning for work with only a few minutes to get ready left no time to find my light and snap 50 photos from my best angle. Thus, my interest in Instagram and selfies began to dwindle. It was then that I decided to make a Snapchat account.
Joining Snapchat sparked my love for social media all over again. It was there I flaunted my most authentic self. I was comfortable recording my makeup-free trip to the grocery store or happy hour with my girls without the pressure for overly filtered faces or the fear of not getting any "likes." I posted what I wanted, not caring who was watching or what I looked like. The platform felt refreshingly real.
Not too long ago, Snapchat released a variety of facial-distorting filters that further solidified my love for the app. I would spend minutes hysterically cracking up at the sight of my face transformed into a frightening bunny - and don't even get me started on the sight of rainbow vomit when I opened my mouth. However, some filters were a little more troubling.
I have nothing against the use of Snapchat faces, but certain filters are more like instant retouchers instead of playful add-ons, becoming similar to the Facetune and Photoshop filters I personally despise. Makeup artists use apps like these to enhance their features in ways a standard camera probably wouldn't capture. However, they have gone from artistry-emphasizing tools to essentials for many everyday women, who blur out their faces until they no longer look real.
One filter in particular, which I refer to as the "catfish filter," instantly alters your entire face to create a more flawless version of you. At the press of a button, my rounded cheeks and nose are suddenly contoured and chiseled. Every pimple and imperfection vanishes - and I am no longer me. Instead, I'm transformed into a thinner, more refined version of myself . . . the more "socially desirable" me.
A variety of filters also exaggerate select facial features. Certain Snapchat enhancements can widen your nose, enlarge your lips, and even fabricate a double chin. As I hold my phone to my face, I wonder what someone who is actually self-conscious of his or her nose, lips, and weight feel seeing these features being altered.
Filters can be fun. But like any perfect photo on Instagram or on Snapchat, they are not reality. Celebrities and social media personalities like Lena Dunham and Kerry Washington have recently spoken out against retouching and photoshopping, and more women are making the choice to take a natural approach to beauty. But it seems like the more society vocalizes loving the skin you are in, the farther away from it we become. When I sign onto my social media profile, it's impossible to escape the overly contoured, "Botox Instagram faces" we are trying to move away from.
I always find myself thinking about the people using the catfish filter who would prefer to look like their retouched self. Or those who would think twice before showing off their filter-free face because it just doesn't look as good as it would enhanced. We all have insecurities, and many of us would change them if we could. But because we are constantly fed dosages of unrealistic perfection, our insecurities consume us. Instead of celebrating the traits that make us unique, we are constantly given new ways to hide them . . . and now one of those ways is through filters.
It is important to remember that while certain enhancements might give you a boost of confidence in a three-second story, you don't need them to be beautiful. Makeup and contouring are forms of artistry that can enhance what you naturally have and serve as a form of self-expression. Instagram, Snapchat, and their filters are another way to tell your story. But don't use them as a crutch that prevents you from being proud of what you see when the filters go off. Instead, celebrate who you are - made up or stripped down. You might be surprised at the way the "real" you will be received.
While I will find it hard to not excitedly transform my face into an alien-like creature or into an animated puppy at the press of a button, I will always remember my reason for joining Snapchat in the first place: to be the most raw, authentic (filter-free) version of me.

20 Overboard GIFs That Prove It Will Never Get Old
Overboard hit theaters almost 29 years ago, but the iconic movie is still quoted and watched to this day (and probably always will be). In addition to Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell's real-life romance, the pair also ended up being comedic gold as costars. While Hawn delivers some icy and hilarious burns (not to mention her disgusted facial expressions) as spoiled heiress Joanna Stayton, Russell shows off his muscles and quick wit as carpenter Dean Proffitt. Despite the somewhat scary plot of Dean actually kidnapping Joanna to make her think she's his wife named Annie after she loses her memory from falling overboard her luxurious yacht, the movie is pure genius. And with remakes being made left and right these days, we love to look back on classic films that are so deliciously original. Keep reading for some of the movie's best GIFs.

Don't Shop For Tequila Again Until You Learn These 13 Terms
Image Source: Flickr user Hugh Bell
Perhaps you have, like me, stood in a liquor aisle and gazed at an array of tequilas on sale, wondering which was the best to buy. To the unitiated, any tequila will do after thinking about cost, bottle size, and how you'll drink it. It makes sense to want something tasty for a sipping drink, whereas one might be less discerning about a tequila bound for a blender as part of a margarita.
But there's a lot more that goes into to tequila than those simple initial factors. There's a whole glossary of terms that insiders in the tequila-making industry and serious tequila-lovers use. We spoke with Antonio Rodriguez, who is the production manager for the storied tequila brand Patrón. Its tequila is made from blue agave in the Mexican region of Jalisco, and Antonio spoke to me from their production facilities, where he was on a break from overseeing the company's time-honored process.
This, according to Antonio, is what everyone needs to know before they find themselves wandering in the tequila aisle.
- 100% Agave Tequila: To Antonio, this is one of the biggest things to look for. "For good, high-quality, it has to be labeled '100% agave tequila,'" he said. All Patrón is labeled as such.
- Tequila: Anything labeled just tequila is based 51% on agave, with the remaining alcoholic sugar coming from different sources. As a result, Antonio said, "the quality is very different." Sometimes this is referred to as "mixto" tequila.
- Silver: This refers to pure, unaged tequila coming straight from the distilling process.
- Reposado: This tequila is aged in barrels for at least two months.
- Joven: This type of tequila is in between silver and reposado; it's been aged for less than two months but includes a bit of aged tequila.
- Añejo: Tequila aged for a year.
- Extra Añejo: The extra designation is added when tequila is aged for three years.
- The NOM Number: This is a number on bottles of Mexican-made tequilas, which allow drinkers to find out more about the production facility in which their product was made.
Image Source: Flickr user drpavloff - Agave: This is the plant from which tequila is made. According to Antonio, it takes seven years to grow before it's ready to be used in the tequila-making process. It's a hardy plant that grows without needing much tending, just rainwater. The market for agave is always in flux depending on global demand for the plant.
- Abocado: This tequila has additives, like caramel coloring or glycerin. Current rules for tequila production don't require that brands reveal the additives on their labels, but Patrón is additive free.
- Mezcal: Mezcal is another spirit made from agave plants. Antonio explained that mezcal is a great deal smokier than tequila, partially because it's made using volcanic stones. It's usually made in Southern Mexico, whereas tequila is made in the central part of the country.
- Proof: The amount of alcohol in a tequila; often, the range is between 70 and 110 proof. The amount of alcohol in a tequila has an impact on the flavor.
- The worm: You won't find a worm in a good bottle, like Patrón. "There are some other agave spirits, usually the very low quality ones, which used to put a worm inside the bottle," Antonio explained, referring to mezcal. "Nowadays, if you see a bottle with that I'd highly recommend not to drink it."

According to hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins, this old-school method works because of the fat to protein ratio. "The oil softens the hair, making it shinier - and the protein in the eggs will make strands stronger." He recommends applying the treatment to dry hair, and leaving it on as a mask for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo twice, and condition afterwards. But, Hawkins notes, this treatment works best for hair that isn't fine or limp.
2. Dabbing nails in olive oil for a healthier look.
Nail expert Stephanie Stone debunked the myth (common in Dominican culture) that rubbing garlic on nails will make them strong (according to studies, it has no benefit). But, she says, applying olive oil (a popular DIY beauty ingredient in Puerto Rico) on nails and cuticles throughout the day is a great way to improve their health. "Keeping your hands and nails moisturized is key, especially if you're trying to repair damaged nail beds. I'd also recommend applying it lightly throughout the day instead of a full on soak. But consistency is key!"
3. Coconut oil as a body moisturizer.
"This one 100% works," says dermatologist (and Sofia Vergara's derm!) Dendy Engelman, M.D., of coconut oil for soft skin, a popular technique in many Latin American countries. "Coconut oil is mostly made up of saturated fats and medium-chain fatty acids, which help repair the skin barrier, trap water to hydrate skin, and also reduce inflammation. And recent studies show it's also a great treatment for eczema."
4. Adding honey to hair conditioner for softer tresses.
A custom common in Caribbean Latin America, honey is a natural moisturizer, which Hawkins says does work to help rehydrate your locks. And using unprocessed honey will give you an extra bonus: it's full of enzymes that will help create a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff.
5. Agua maravilla to fight blemishes.
Also known as witch hazel, this is common in many Latino families, especially from Puerto Rican and Dominican backgrounds. Engelman says it works because the mixture contains anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibacterial properties. Engelman also recommends Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Refreshingly Clean Towelettes ($6) to control blemishes and calm bug bites.
6. Washing hair with Coca-Cola for shine.
This is a long-time favorite technique among not just Latino families, but celebrities like Suki Waterhouse. Hairstylist Nunzio Saviano gives this traditional trick the thumbs up: "The acidity closes the hair cuticle, which makes it look healthy and shiny. But be careful: the sugar can leave your hair sticky, so you might need to rinse it out quickly. Apple cider vinegar is an alternative that might not be as messy!"
7. Beach sand as a skin exfoliant.
"Sand is essentially finely granulated rocks, so it's perfect to remove excess dry skin cells," Engelman says. "But because it's so abrasive, I'd only recommend you use it to exfoliate feet. It might be too harsh for other parts of your body."
8. Manzanilla grisi shampoo to lighten hair.
Saviano says that this traditionally Mexican and South American product - which contains Flor de Manzanilla and claims to both wash and lighten hair - does work, but he would use it sparingly. "This will maintain your tone and even lighten it at times, but if you use it too much, your color might become dull or even fade."
9. Grape skin paste for glowing skin.
Grapes are a gold mine, says Engelman. "They'll have a brightening effect over time because they contain vitamins B6, C, and A, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, selenium, and flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and remove toxins from the skin."
10. Sugar and lemon juice as an antiaging exfoliant.
According to Engelman, the sugar crystals act as an exfoliator, sloughing away dead skin, while the lemon juice helps peel away dead skin cells because of their content of alpha hydroxy acid (which is found in many antiaging treatments). Exfoliating is important, Engelman says, "because as we age, our skin doesn't shed as effectively. Plus, getting rid of dead cells helps your moisturizers penetrate better."
11. Avocado for healthy cuticles.
"Actually, rubbing avocado oil on cuticles is more effective than actual avocado," says Stone. But good news for avocado lovers: "Avocados in a healthy, balanced diet will help you see overall improvement in your hair, skin, and nails, too." Bring on the guacamole!
