How to Make This School Year the Best - For You and Your Kids

The following is a post that was originally featured on The Chic Site and written by Rachel Hollis, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Food.

My kids are back to school this morning! Hence the picture of me sliding through the kitchen with my coffee cup raised like a trophy. Getting through that last hurdle of summer always feels like a massive win. Then there's the whirlwind of shopping for school supplies and haircuts and who gets which backpack, and no you can't have two lunch boxes, and I will turn this car around and then nobody gets mechanical pencils!

All of it can be exhausting.

Which is why the first day of school always feels like a huge relief - an exhale of breath I didn't know I was holding. But along with that relief, also comes anxiety.

Having kids in school feels stressful for me. There are three little people with totally different schedules to keep track of. There's paperwork: both the kind that accumulates in massive piles in the first couple of weeks back and the loose leaf permission slips and sign up forms that I find shoved down deep in backpacks throughout the year. Also, school lunches. I'm pretty regimented about using a system to keep lunches organized. But now that the boys are older they want to have lunch at school sometimes, but only on specific days. So now we're tracking the cafeteria calendar like it's our part time job, and making sure our lunch cards have enough money on them to get the teriyaki chicken this Thursday. There are field trips and performances. There are bake sales and carnivals. There are drop offs and picks ups and banking days where they get out an hour early and if Jackson (God bless him!) didn't remind me I'd likely forget every single one. There are so many things to remember, and I guess what ultimately stresses me out is the idea that the other moms (at school or out there in the wild world) are somehow way better at this than I am.

I am one of the most organized people I have ever met, and even with all my planning I still feel like I'm constantly forgetting things. Or, remembering them at midnight the night before they're due. And no matter what I do or create or volunteer for, some mythical other mom at school has done it better. "Yes mommy you can buy the t-shirt we need for make-your-own-t-shirt-day, but Michael's mom grew organic cotton plants, and she hand-separated the seed from the fiber before spinning it into yarn for the shirt she sewed him herself."

I can't even begin to keep up, and the stress of trying is making me anxious about the first day of fourth grade in a school I don't even attend!

So this year I've made a big decision. I'm over it. I am utterly over the idea of crushing back to school, or any other part of school for that matter! There are some parts of it I do really well. Our morning routine is the stuff of legends. My lunchtime notes have been known to make even grown adults chuckle. My kids are well groomed, well mannered and they get good grades. Beyond that, they are good people. The kind of kids who befriend the outcasts and the loners. Sure, they attack each other at home and are dramatic enough about their lack of access to technology to earn them an Oscar, but whatever. We are doing pretty good and pretty good is way better than faked perfection any day of the week.

So I might not volunteer in the classroom this year - though count me in for store-bought goodies at the class parties. And I might not make it to every field trip, because, I know I'm the jerk-of-all-jerks but I honestly hate chaperoning field trips . . . but if you need help with a school musical, that would make my heart sing. And also - gird your loins - because a babysitter will likely pick my boys up from school more than I will. It will all be OK. The other moms will parent however they like and I'll do the same. I will stop being so hard on myself and focus instead on the good work we are doing, the results of which are evident in the awesome little people we're raising. What if we all went into this new school year with the intention to just gracefully do our best. Meaning, we're going to do our level-best to turn in every slip on time and never forget wacky hair Wednesday. But we're also wise enough to understand that it's going to happen, we're going to forget something or not be able to volunteer, or not be able to compete with Michael's mom and her non-GMO custom gingerbread kit for every member of the class, and that's OK. Michael's mom is awesome at her thing, and you and me? We're awesome at ours. We're going to walk into this new school year and remember that we're raising our children into the adults they will become. That's a valiant endeavor that will take us a lifetime of effort and a single day, or even a handful of days, when you aren't mom of the century won't make or break your kids. It's the intention to do well that will see them through. It's the lessons in grace and self care and holding realistic expectations about what you're capable of that will truly serve them later on. Choose a handful of things that you rock as a school mom and knock those out of the park as often as you can. The other stuff? Give yourself the permission to do the best you can and the grace to be peaceful on the days when you miss the mark. To those headed back to school, I solute you. Let's make this the best one yet!

Want to see how we stay organized in the morning? Watch this!

Virtual reality meets walking?

Hailey Baldwin's Strappy Heels Go So High, We're Not Sure Where They End

Hailey Baldwin's signature style is straight up sexy, and there's really no other way to describe it. So we weren't surprised when the supermodel one-upped herself at the VMAs afterparty. After wowing her way down the red carpet in a totally sheer Georges Chakra jumpsuit, the supermodel impressed in thigh-high DSquared2 heels.

While her front slit David Koma dress worked as the perfect foundation to a leggy look, all eyes were clearly on her shoes. Hailey attracted more attention to her footwear by accessorizing with silver hoop earrings and a choker. If anything, she proved there's more than one way to show off your hot Summer style. Read on to zoom in on her caged sandals, then find a pair of your own.

18 American Horror Story Monsters to Channel This Halloween

There's plenty of messed-up sh*t on American Horror Story, so much so that the amount of shocking moments is quickly approaching astronomical numbers. Most of the credit, of course, goes to the strange monsters that have cropped up from season to season, from the Rubber Man in season one to the Addiction Demon in last year's Hotel. While these creatures and villains may give you nightmares, they're actually perfect fodder for a truly horrifying Halloween costume. Of course, we're hoping American Horror Story's sixth season has even more ideas in store, but in the meantime, let's look to the past for inspiration.

Britney Spears Just Admitted That She Wants to Collaborate With This Singer

Britney Spears recently dropped her new album, Glory, and over the weekend, she appeared on Most Requested Live With Romeo, where she answered a slew of fan questions, revealing everything from how her album title came to be to what producers or music video directors she'd like to work with. While the "Make Me" singer misunderstood the latter question, she did admit that she'd like to work with Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, Gwen Stefani, and a certain other singer that's "very good."

Every Hot Picture of Jensen Ackles We Could Get Our Hands On

It's high time we pay tribute to one of the most important things about Jensen Ackles: his beautiful, heart-stopping good looks. Of course, we all know by now that he's more than just a pretty face; his epic expressions on Supernatural are a force to be reckoned with, his amazing sense of humor makes us laugh, and, of course, nothing beats those ridiculously magical modeling pictures from the '90s. Keep reading to see the hottest pictures of Jensen we could possibly find.

Bella Hadid Looks Like She's Wearing a Classic Leather Jacket, but Wait Until You See the Back

When Bella Hadid opted for a night out with her sister Gigi, we knew to expect some sexy outfits. The model sisters are both fans of crop tops, sheer styles, and plunging necklines, and it was definitely more of the like when the two stepped out at The Nice Guy in West Hollywood. Gigi showed off her toned stomach in a teeny tiny off-the-shoulder shirt. Bella's black top was low-cut and she paired it with lace-up pants. But with all that statement-making style going on, it was actually a simple leather jacket - the one that Bella had draped across her shoulders - that truly caught our eyes.

From the front, the piece looked pretty average - the typical topper that the fashion crowd gravitates toward. But the back was where the fun really began. In bold white letters, it read "Don't Talk to Me." Simple. Hilarious. Relatable. And now we need it in our own closets (specifically for Monday mornings because, ugh).

Scroll through to see both of their outfits in full, then shop a jacket option similar to Bella's.

Here Are All the New Features You Can Expect on Android Nougat

At Google's annual developer conference, Google I/O, the company announced more features for its latest mobile operating system, Android N - or as the company revealed, Android Nougat. See what new capabilities you can expect ahead.

  1. Multitasking: Say goodbye to all your apps remaining open. Instead, Android Nougat will only have open the last seven apps you've actually used. It will automatically close apps that you haven't used in a while.
  2. A new button: Finally, Android Nougat will get a "clear all" button to get rid of all open apps.
  3. Jump between apps more easily: With Quick Switch, double tap the recent button to easily go between apps.
  4. Multiwindow capability: Spilt your screen and complete two tasks at once with this handy feature. Just long tap on the recent button, pick the app you want to use at the same time, and then launch it. Now you can watch a video and write down the recipe at the same time.
  5. Android TV multitasking: Picture-in-picture mode is finally coming. You'll be able to place anything you're watching live in a smaller window and do other tasks.
  6. Reply to messages easier: Stealing a feature from iOS, Android Nougat will have quick reply, which lets you reply to a message without opening up the app.
  7. New emoji: The newest emoji from the Unicode 9 release are coming! This includes 72 new emoji and will finally support skin-tone color variations.
  8. VR mode: Your Android phone will now be ready for virtual reality at any time with VR mode. With this enabled, you'll be able to watch anything in virtual reality without any low latency.
  9. Encryption is coming: Android Nougat will introduce the ability to encrypt your files.
  10. Easier to manage software updates: Software updates will no longer interrupt your phone usage - they will occur in the background.

Android Nougat starts rolling out as an over-the-air update on Aug. 22 but only to Nexus devices: the Nexus 6P, 5X, 6, 9, Nexus Player, and the Pixel C. It's unclear when each device can expect to see it, as different carriers might "receive it later than others," according to a Google blog post.

Keep looking to see what features to expect and get ready to enjoy Android Nougat.

Your New Street Style Star: Jennifer Lopez's Shades of Blue Character

Jennifer Lopez's TV drama, Shades of Blue, is back for a second season early next year, and that means plenty of sightings of J Lo in character and costume as the team films new episodes.

Since before season 1 premiered, we knew Detective Harlee Santos was going to be stylish as heck. Previews showing her low-maintenance, curly, short bob got us excited, and then the first episode aired and we realized how chill yet chic the pieces the character wears were.

It's all about loose jeans and pants, fitted blazers, simple t-shirts, and sensible shoes for this detective who chases the bad guys on the streets of New York City. Her laid-back style is totally attainable and wearable - the total opposite of the skimpy leotards and naked dresses we're used to seeing Jennifer wear in real life. Keep scrolling to find five trends J Lo's character will inspired you to adopt this Fall.

Look Back at Queen Bey's Incredible VMAs Moments

Beyoncé was recognized with the Michael Jackson video vanguard award at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2014, and the honor couldn't have come at a more perfect time. After a hugely successful year - thanks to a Billboard No. 1 charting album, blowout Super Bowl halftime-show performance, and not one but two sold-out tours - Queen Bey was perfectly poised to receive the award, which was rightfully named after one of her biggest inspirations as an entertainer. Not only was she presented with her gold Moonman by husband Jay Z and their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, but Beyoncé also performed an epic 16-minute medley of her surprise visual album to a packed house of celebrity fans. It was, to say the least, an incredible night.

Since gaining fame as a member of Destiny's Child in the late '90s, Beyoncé has been a fixture at many VMAs ceremonies and has taken the stage multiple times to perform, present, and accept trophies. From her first time walking the red carpet with Jay Z to being caught in the middle of a controversial moment between Taylor Swift and Kanye West to her epic pregnancy announcement after a 2011 performance of "Love on Top," we're taking a trip down memory lane with Beyoncé's most memorable VMAs moments over the years. Before the big show on Sunday, look back on the singer's most memorable VMAs moments.

John Krasinski Reveals the Sweet Way He and Emily Blunt "Preserve" Their Relationship

John Krasinski has been making the rounds promoting his latest film, The Hollars, and earlier this week, he opened up to People about how he and wife Emily Blunt find time for each other in the midst of raising two daughters. "If we aren't working, we're at home with the kids. We raise our kids, and we're very important and present in our kids' lives, but at the end of the day, it's important to preserve your relationship." He continued, "It's really fun because I have an amazing wife who also will go out on dates on me. We do one date a week at least where it's just us." As to what their date nights consist of, John said, "Just go to dinner and talk, it's really easy. We don't need much. We just go to dinner and talk and have no baby talk."

John and Emily most recently welcomed a daughter named Violet, who joined their 2-year-old daughter, Hazel. During a stop on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, the actor gushed about how lucky he feels to be their dad, saying, "I truly - every single night - say, 'I can't believe these two amazing girls are mine.'"

We Couldn't Dream Up a Better Chanel Campaign Star Than Willow Smith

While Karl Lagerfeld notably sends It supermodels like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid down his runway, he also works with on-the-rise stars like Lily-Rose Depp who bring a new, slightly edgier style to the fashion house. His latest muse, Willow Smith, just scored her first campaign, and she's also owning the title of "ambassadress."

A few months back, Willow proved she's in it for the long haul at the Fall '16 show. She made the most of it, showing off her metallic zippered jumpsuit, designed by Mr. Lagerfeld himself. Willow accessorized with biker gloves, two-toned booties, and pearls, proving she's got a handle on the brand's iconic accessories. But Willow's role at Chanel has been a long time coming. Read on for 11 reasons, including her first shoot with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel eyewear, plus some red carpet moments, all of which prove Willow's always managed to work Chanel pieces into her signature look.

This Math Problem Will Make You Question Everything You Ever Knew About Algebra

Math isn't everyone's best skill - and even those who are good at it are questioning everything after trying this algebra problem.

The question originally went viral in Japan, after a study discovered that only 60 percent of 20-somethings could actually solve it. Are you already feeling frustrated and hopeless at trying to know what the answer is? Watch the video below, posted by YouTube user MindYourDecisions, a popular math puzzle channel. In it, Presh Talwalkar, the mastermind behind this question, will guide you to the right answer.

As you can see, not even a calculator can help you, as it will read the problem wrong and arrive at the answer of 9. To solve it correctly in a calculator, you need to write it out like this: 9-3/(1/3) + 1, which will lead you to 1 as the correct answer. The problem tests your knowledge of PEMDAS, the order of operations formula, which says you must get to the answer by following these steps in this order: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. In this question, that means dividing 3 by the 1/3 first, which is the same as 3x3. That will then lead you to 9-9+1. From there, 9-9=0 + 1 = 1. Ta-da!

If you arrived at 3, 7, or 9 as your answer, you're not alone. Most people have forgotten how to use PEMDAS or interpret the fraction of 1/3 the wrong way. Still not feeling much of a challenge? Try this other math question that not even parents could solve.

10 Popular Weight-Loss Tips That Can Actually Cause Weight Gain

Whether we read it in a magazine, read it on Instagram, or heard it from your best friend's sister, we're inundated with weight-loss tips on how to drop founds fast. Some advice is not so good and can actually make the pounds pile on. Here's a list of do-not-follow tips.

  1. Never eat past 7 p.m.: What time you stop eating has nothing to do with how much weight you'll gain or lose. What does matter is how many calories you consume each day. So instead of giving yourself a cutoff time to stop eating, give yourself a daily calorie amount.
  2. You only need cardio to lose weight: While going for a 30-minute run will burn about 270 calories, cardio alone isn't the best use of your time. Be sure to include strength training since having muscle increases your metabolism to help you burn more calories.
  3. Weigh yourself daily to stay on track: Monday you're 140, Tuesday you're 139, and Wednesday you're 141! These fluctuations have to do with how much water you're retaining or when the last time was that you had a bowel movement. Although completely normal, they can be damn discouraging and even make you feel less motivated to eat that salad for lunch or hit that 7 p.m. workout. Since slow and steady weight loss wins the race, once a week scale dates are enough. But also monitor your progress by factoring in your energy levels, your fitness endurance, and how your clothes fit.
  4. As long as you exercise, you don't have to watch what you eat: That 30- to 60-minute workout doesn't give you the green light to eat pizza and cookies all day. Practicing portion control is essential because if you eat more calories than you use up, you're going to actually gain weight.
  5. Cut out all carbs: While cutting out bread, pasta, rice, baked goods, and fruit may help you drop pounds fast, certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD of Whole Health Nutrition says you can't sustain this diet and you shouldn't because carbs are what your body needs for energy. Instead of saying "no" to all carbs, limit the amount you eat and make sure what you choose are complex carbs such as quinoa and barley and whole wheat bread and pasta, and you should opt for an actual orange instead of OJ (the fiber will fill you up longer).
  6. Skip meals to save calories: This sounds like it'll work, but your body is smart. If you don't eat, it stores fat to use for energy later, which makes losing weight impossible. Instead of skipping a meal, eat small meals more frequently to ensure you're using up the calories you're taking in.
  7. Drink diet soda instead of regular soda: While it is lower in calories, Leslie says that artificial sweeteners are just as addictive as regular ones, which can cause cravings for more sweets. Fruit-infused waters or herbal teas are way healthier, and if it's something sweet you crave, have a piece of fruit.
  8. Eat low-fat: The diet craze in the '90s was all about low-fat, but we've learned that eating healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, and nuts "can actually help us to increase our metabolic rate and lose more weight than by eating a low-fat diet."
  9. Keep a pair of jeans that are one size too small for motivation: Now that's just cruel. Positive reinforcement is way more motivating, so every time you lose five or 10 pounds, reward yourself with a relaxing yoga class or manicure.
  10. Do sweaty workouts in heated rooms to lose more weight: If you weigh yourself before and after a sweaty workout like hot yoga or a SoulCycle class, you'll lose a pound or more. But it's not fat you're losing - it's water weight. How much you sweat isn't an indication of how many calories you're burning. Instead focus on the length and intensity of the workout.

With 2 Simple Switches, Kate Middleton Turned Her Old Dress Into a Whole New Look

While we can't even begin to fathom how big Kate Middleton's closet is, we're going to make an educated guess and say it's extra large. It has to be, considering how many dresses she stores in there and rewears years after they made their debut. During a visit to Luton on Wednesday, the duchess broke out an old favorite yet again, rocking a white and blue number from LK Bennett, which she first wore in Australia back in 2014.

The chic shift was superflattering on Kate, and thanks to two simple switches - trading a blue clutch for a beige one and dark shoes for something light - the dress looked like a whole new look. This isn't the first time this year Kate opted for a design from 2014: she wore an old Roksanda dress at Wimbledon in June, leaving us convinced she's favoring that year for fashion.

Scroll through to see Kate's look then and now. Then, see the pieces the stylish royal would totally buy from Zara.

5 Things Avocado Fans Need to Know About Mexico's Deforestation

Face it: we live in an avocado-obsessed world complete with toasts, pastas, smoothies, and, of course, guacamole. And this increased spotlight on the seeded fruit has created a sky-high demand. Without thinking twice, we're shelling out the higher price per avo as if a shortage doesn't even exist.

According to the Associated Press, Mexican farmers in the mountainous Michoachán region are, understandably, trying to capitalize on the extra cash possibilities by planting as many avocado trees as they can at the expense of the area's already flourishing natural forest. They're cutting down pine and fir trees to make room for future avocado orchards, and it's already causing major problems. In a 2010 statement on the issue, a translated excerpt of which can be found below, Greenpeace Mexico foreshadowed some of the potential problems ahead.

"Beyond the displacement of forests and the effects on water retention, the high use of agricultural chemicals and the large volumes of wood needed to pack and ship avocados are other factors that could have negative effects on the area's environment and the well-being of its inhabitants."

Yikes! Maybe it's time to consider an alternative. Sweet potato, perhaps? Read on for five fast facts about deforestation as a result of avocado demand straight from the AP. Then, discover more about the trendy produce.

  1. Because of a shortage in Mexico, avocado prices rose nearly 24 cents between January and July 2016, making it a more desirable crop to farm.
  2. When compared to a forest, an avocado orchard uses twice as much water.
  3. Farmers have chopped sections of the pine forest that houses the Michoachán region's monarch butterfly reserve to make room for avocado plants.
  4. According to a 2012 report from Mexico's National Institute for Forestry, Farming and Fisheries Research, increased avocado production and exports in the Michoachán region caused 1,700 acres of land loss.
  5. Mexican authorities have started to intervene more, which is reportedly slowing down the deforestation rate.

This Depressing Photo Captures What's Wrong With Weddings These Days

These days, people snap every meal they eat, so it's only natural to want to capture precious moments during a wedding ceremony. But at what point does wedding etiquette become completely broken? Australian photographer Thomas Stewart posted a rant on Facebook that criticized wedding guests for taking pictures during the ceremony with their devices. The accompanying photo shows a groom forced to lean to the side in order to see his bride going down the aisle. Thomas argues that couples should enforce a "completely unplugged wedding ceremony" because guests aren't truly present and can ruin the photographer's shots when they're using phones and tablets. "You are witnesses to their marriage, so for goodness sake, watch them with your eyes and your minds, not your phones."

Here's his full post, which has since gone viral:

Thomas does make valid points - the couple hired a professional photographer for a reason. So next time you attend a wedding ceremony, enjoy the momentous occasion by keeping your electronics in your pocket or purse. And future newlyweds, you might want to consider a device-free wedding!
