Patrick Dempsey Reveals How He Saved His Marriage: Communication and "Lots of Sex"
Patrick Dempsey has had a year full of fun moments with his family. From taking a romantic St. Barts vacation with his wife, Jillian, in February, to bringing his gorgeous kids to his movie premiere this week, it seems the Dempseys are stronger than ever after Patrick and Jillian called off their divorce in January. "Our marriage was not something I was prepared to let go of," the Grey's Anatomy actor said to People in their latest issue. "I didn't feel like we had done all the work. And we both wanted to do that work. That's where it started." It came as quite a shock when Patrick announced he and his makeup artist wife of 15 years were splitting, which he described as "scary," especially when he thought about their three children: Tallula, 14 and twins Darby and Sullivan, 8.
"It's always destabilizing when you're potentially breaking up a family or you have a big section of your life that's ending," the 50-year-old actor said. "Everybody has their own path. Jill and I decided it was time to work on our issues and improve. We wanted to be role models for our kids like, okay, if you have differences, you can work them out." Patrick has recently been busy making the rounds for his role in Bridget Jones's Baby, but he notes that taking things step by step is one of the ways he rekindled his relationship. "You can only do one thing at a time and do it well," he says. "I [learned] to prioritize. Our union has to be the priority. I wasn't prepared to give up on her and she wasn't either. We both wanted to fight for it." The biggest secret to their reunion, though? "You've got to communicate, and stay open and not get lazy. And not give up. And lots of sex!" There you have it.

If Your Kid Took Antibiotics as a Baby, Their Risk of Developing This Skin Condition Increases
A number of studies performed on over 400,000 people have led experts to conclude that introducing an antibiotic to a child's system before the age of two could lead to an increased risk of eczema or hay fever later in life. Because a baby's immune system is so fragile, it is believed that a course of antibiotics actually kills off the body's natural bacteria, which causes the immune system to over-react later to typically harmless substances, like pollen.
Through a compilation of results from 22 different studies, researchers found that when the antibiotics were introduced early, the risk of eczema increased up to 41 percent, and the risk of hay fever increased up to 56 percent. The risk was found to be higher if the child had more than one course of antibiotics before their second birthday.
Experts have expressed concern that the overuse of these drugs is causing "a breed of untreatable superbugs" that are surviving the effects of medication and evolving quickly. Doctors admit that children should still take antibiotics when necessary, but are looking to reduce using the drugs when they're not needed so as to avoid germs becoming resistant to the medication.

POPSUGAR: Have you seen The Girl on The Train?
John Krasinski: I have.
PS: And what do you think of her performance?
JK: It's the best she's ever done. And I don't say that - I mean, yes, of course I have every reason to be biased, but in this particular instance - I never overstate how I feel about her. She always blows me away, but in this particular role, I can say genuinely for the first time, it's the only time since, as long as I've known her, that I ever forgot that it was her on screen. That's how good she is in this movie, which is very rare and very hard to do. She goes so full into the transformation of someone who's going through obviously a struggle in her life and a struggle with addiction, and it's just incredible. She's so good. She's always so good, but this is like a tour-de-force performance for me.

PS: Did you have a favorite movie role of hers before this?
JK: I did. I had many. Most recently I thought Sicario was a damn near perfect film.
PS: I thought she was going to get an Oscar nomination.
JK: I thought so too!
PS: What's your impression of the way that she can switch between comedy and drama?
JK: My impression is, she's just one of the best actors working. My wife, I've been a fan of hers long before we even knew each other. I was watching her in movies like My Summer of Love and The Devil Wears Prada I've probably seen way too many times. And this is before I even met her. And then I've watched her go from being a really good actress who makes really good decisions to being the best actress who makes exceptional decisions, and it's because she can literally do anything. But I will say above all, I think her taste is what impresses me the most. She chooses roles and understands roles so specifically. Yes, most recently, she's getting a lot of roles given to her, but before then she was choosing these roles. And she's so committed - the story in my head is Salmon Fishing in the the Yemen - I remember she loved that and she connected to that script, and I remember her getting calls that like, now we're gonna push two months, now we're gonna push five months, now we're gonna push a whole year. And that's where, most of the time, you lose your actress, because they have to go on to other things. And Emily just said, "no, whenever they make this movie, I'm gonna do it." She's so dedicated to the roles that she plays. I don't know that there's anybody better than her. She's so fantastic. I don't think I enjoy watching anybody more.

PS: I can say objectively that you're not just biased.
JK: Not just a creepy husband? [laughs] I'll go so far as to say she inspires me. Watching her work and getting to see her work is so inspiring. It teaches me so much about what I can be doing more and better of.
PS: I thought I heard that you guys had said you were not going to work together?
JK: No, we would love to work together. Would love it.
PS: I saw that you're both voicing characters in the upcoming Animal Crackers.
JK: Yes, our first animated [film] - that is true, our first roles that we've done together! We play a married couple in it. But I guess because it's animated we didn't think of it as like our first, but it is, it's our first roles together. But we'd love to do a movie together. I think it's gotta be the right movie. It's gotta be a movie where the story of us being married doesn't supersede the movie itself.

I Did CrossFit 5 Days a Week For 1 Month and This Is What Happened
I don't really want to share half-naked selfies of myself with the world, but I feel compelled to. Because after years and years of working out four to six days a week, running and training for half-marathons, sweating it out in yoga classes, and eating healthy, I have finally caught a glimpse of the kind of transformation I have been wanting ever since I can remember. And it's only been one month.
Before
This might sound like a PSA, but so what? I really do owe it all to CrossFit. I had been wanting to try it for years but through two pregnancies, working, and taking care of my two young kiddos, I just felt like I couldn't carve out the time. It was kind of a lame excuse, actually, and I realized it was high time to make the time and do something for me. So on Mother's Day 2016, I bought myself a $250 On-Ramp course for CrossFit. No it's not culty, yes the workouts are frickin' hard, and yes, the community support really is amazing and was the key to my success.
After completing that course, I decided to go all in and committed to going for one month, five days a week. Here's what happened.
- Weight down: I have been the same weight for years, trying to lose those last pesky pounds that hide my muscles and make me look softer than I'd like. I was amazed when I stepped on the scale and realized I was at the weight that I lied about on my driver's license. Down five pounds! I mean, that's huge when you don't have a ton of weight to lose. CrossFit smacked my weight-loss plateau in the face!
- Less to pinch: OK, so the scale isn't everything. I also lost at least one inch around my waist. It's not an enormous change, but I can totally tell in the photos because it's the first area of my body my eyes move to whenever I look in the mirror. I have had a belly my entire life it seems, and I can finally see it slimming down and that little muffin top diminishing. I even noticed a little definition in my obliques!
- Arm definition: While brushing my teeth a couple weeks in, I happily noticed my biceps bulging but didn't think anything of it until the month was up and people commented on my arms. "What have you been doing?" they asked. Someone else said when they hugged me, my arms felt stronger. Even the Comcast guy who came to fix my cable commented on my "guns." I also noticed more definition in my upper back.
After
- Toned thighs: I've always had lean legs, thanks to running and inherited genes from my mom, but they look even more toned and defined. I slipped on a pair of leggings and loved that I could seen my quad muscles popping out a little. Thank you lunges and deadlifts!
- Perkier butt: I also inherited a flat butt from my mom, but a month full of squats, wall balls, and kettlebell swings have turned my flat rear into a more shapely, rounder, lifted bum. My husband has noticed, too. Bonus!
- More energy: I used to run for an hour in the morning from 6 to 7 a.m., and by late morning/early afternoon, I felt completely drained. My body felt exhausted, my brain felt foggy, and all I wanted was a nap. I craved sugar and chocolate because I thought it'd give me a pick-me-up. Of course, that backfired with an inevitable sugar crash, plus the extra calories didn't help me lose weight. I didn't feel tired once during this month-long CrossFit experiment. Even after getting up at 4:50 to make my 5:45 a.m. classes, I still had more physical and mental energy.
- Less hunger: Now this surprised me. I thought all that intense cardio and heavy lifting would leave me insatiably famished. But I felt way less hungry than I did after those hour-long runs. I never ate before those early a.m. classes for fear or puking, and by the time I got home, showered, and started working, I wasn't hungry until 9 or 10. I was also inspired to eat better because I was putting in all this time and energy, and I didn't want to undo all that by devouring half a box of Wheat Thins dipped in peanut butter.
- Varicose veins diminished: I thought the bulging blue varicose vein behind my left knee was the oh-so-special badge of honor I shared with moms everywhere. But after four weeks of CrossFit, I swear, it's hardly noticeable. The increased blood flow from all that heart-pumping cardio works magic! I feel way more confident in short shorts and skirts now.
- Stronger overall: Carry three bags of groceries on each arm from the car to the house? No problem! Lifting heavier weights for just one month made me stronger and more capable of handling life's challenges. When both kids' heads accidentally collided when reaching for the same flower, CrossFit mommy power came to the rescue and I could bend down and lift 80 pounds worth of kid without my knees giving out with energy left to kiss both boo-boos! Running feels easier, previously difficult yoga poses like One-Legged Crow are doable, and come Winter, I'm excited to see how CrossFit-strong legs tackle the ski slopes.
- Confidence: It wears on you when you spend years thinking about your weight while working hard to change your body and not seeing the results you're after. Making a change that actually worked was life changing. I feel more confident and am just overall happier. I also realized that I like pushing myself and since CrossFit encourages you to to get stronger every day, I'm embracing this feeling of pride, and it's inspiring me to keep pushing myself. I see now why people become hooked on WODs. It only took one month, but I'm addicted now, too. I can't wait to see how my body changes in the months to come.

Rosé season might be ending - but not when it comes to hair color. We recently got word from Butterfly Studio colorist Tamara DeFelice that rose gold blond hair is going to be one of the hottest hues for Fall.
"For a modern touch, keep most brightness around the face while staying a bit deeper in the roots throughout the crown," said DeFelice. "Concentrate highlights around the middle to ends of the hair. This keeps maintenance lower, and adds instant depth to the look."
Though it is easier for blondes to add some pink to their hair, it is also recommended for brunettes with warm undertones. "This color will accentuate the peach and gold tones in women with warmer skin tones," she said. "Also, it will bring out the honey tones in their eyes."
The shade has been interpreted in diverse ways from Emma Stone's deep "desert rose" shade to subtle pink highlights and ombre fades.
"Play up your Fall blond by asking [your stylist] to add in hues of rich rose gold and butterscotch," DeFelice suggested.

Gabrielle Union Opens Up About Being the Victim of a Horrific Sexual Assault
In the midst of Sundance darling The Birth of a Nation receiving sweeping praise from critics everywhere, rape allegations against the film's director, actor, and producer Nate Parker resurfaced. Nate and friend Jean Celestin - who co-wrote The Birth of a Nation - were accused of raping a fellow student at Penn State. Nate was acquitted of his charges and Celestin's initial conviction was eventually overturned, and in 2012 their accuser committed suicide. Due to the accusations attracting a great deal of media attention, one of the film's brightest stars, Gabrielle Union, addressed the topic in a thoughtful, heartbreaking op-ed for the LA Times on Friday, which details her own experiences as a rape survivor.
"Twenty-four years ago I was raped at gunpoint in the cold, dark backroom of the Payless shoe store where I was then working," Gabrielle began the essay. "Two years ago I signed on to a brilliant script called The Birth of a Nation, to play a woman who was raped . . . Seventeen years ago Nate Parker was accused and acquitted of sexual assault. Four years ago the woman who accused him committed suicide." The Top Five actress noted that "rape is a wound that throbs long after it heals," and that since Nate's story was revealed to her, she found herself "in a state of stomach-churning confusion."
Gabrielle plays an unnamed slave who ends up being raped, and noted that although she took the role specifically for the reason that she could represent "countless black women who have been and continue to be violated," she couldn't remain silent any longer. "As important and groundbreaking as this film is, I cannot take these allegations lightly," she wrote, adding, "This is real. We are real. Sexual violence happens more often than anyone can imagine. And if the stories around this film do not prove and emphasize this, then I don't know what does."

They found that low-carb diets were consistently better at helping patients lose weight than low-fat diets; the participants on the low-carb diets lost 2.5 pounds more than those on low-fat diets, with the average weight loss among all groups at about six pounds.
This latest study on the weight-loss benefits of a low-carb diet adds further evidence that if you want to lose weight, ditching bread - not olive oil - can help you see success. Another recent study, for example, showed that dieters who ate fewer than 40 grams of carbohydrates per day lost about eight pounds more than dieters who were put on a low-fat diet. Other studies have shown that high-carb diets may be the real heart-disease culprit, not saturated fat. All in all, this new review is a good reminder that if you want to lose weight, you should choose a diet rich in healthy fats, lean proteins, and fresh produce.
