Solange Knowles Explains Why Black People Unsafe in "White Spaces" After Being Attacked at a Concert

Solange Knowles is standing up to her haters. On Friday, Beyoncé's younger sister took to Twitter to tell her fans about a horrible encounter she had at a Kraftwerk concert with husband Alan Ferguson and son Daniel Julez Smith Jr. in New Orleans. In a series of tweets, Solange explained that she and her son were enjoying the electronic dance show when four white women yelled, "Sit down now! You need to sit down now!" After refusing to acknowledge them, they proceeded to throw something at her, which her son later confirmed was a lime.

She then went on to explain why black people don't feel safe in "many white spaces," writing, "But in this moment, I'm just going to share my experience . . . So that maybe someone will understand, why many of us don't feel safe . . . in many white spaces . . . We don't "bring the drama" . . . Fix yourself." She ended her account by sharing screenshots of the racist responses she received on Twitter, and writing, "And last thing . . . I see folks saying 'Well u live in Louisiana' . . . but I say I live in a city w THE most incredible, beautiful black. folk." Perfectly said, Solange.

Lethal Weapon: The Lowdown on Fall TV's Buzziest Reboot

You may be sick of TV networks rebooting old movies, but another fresh revival is coming your way! Fox is premiering its take on the Lethal Weapon franchise this Fall, and well, we have opinions. But first, we've scraped together everything you need to know about the series. For starters, if you're deeply devoted to 1987's Lethal Weapon and its sequels, you might just want to skip this show altogether.

The Cast

Clayne Crawford (Rectify) is playing Martin Riggs and Damon Wayans is playing Roger Murtaugh, the roles Mel Gibson and Danny Glover originated. On supporting duty is Jordana Brewster, Johnathan Fernandez, and Chandler Kinney.

The Plot

Having recently lost his pregnant wife, Riggs is nearly suicidal - but he's one hell of a cop. The ex-Navy SEAL-turned-detective is paired with Murtaugh, a family man who doesn't agree with Riggs's dangerous (but effective) tactics in the field.

The Trailer

Our Review

The fact that this made our shortlist of the worst new Fall shows should tell you something. This premise has been played out in so many different iterations, and this series offers nothing new to the buddy-cop genre. If the leads develop more onscreen chemistry, it might have a shot.

The Premiere Date

The series premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. on Fox.

The Must-See Movie That Had Everyone Sobbing at the Toronto Film Festival

It doesn't take a lot for a movie make people cry, but when a PG-13 fantasy film about a boy and a tree monster turns a theater of film critics into sniffling, weeping, messes - well, that's saying something. A Monster Calls premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, treating audiences to an early peek at one of the most beautifully heartbreaking films of the year.

The film was written by Patrick Ness, who also penned the novel of the same name, and directed by J.A. Bayona, who is best known for The Impossible. Newcomer Lewis MacDougall leads the film as Conor, a 12-year-old boy who is dealing with more than his fair share of issues both at home, where his mother (Felicity Jones) is dying of cancer, and at school, where he is being constantly bullied for being different. One night Conor is visited by a monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) who informs Conor that he has three stories to share before Conor will have to reveal his own truth to the monster.

The film has shades of many other beloved films; Conor's unlikely friendship with the monster is reminiscent of The Iron Giant; the way we see the monster's stories reminded me of the storytelling devices used in A Little Princess; the monster himself looks a lot like Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy; and the list could go on. But A Monster Calls is far from being a retread of films that have come before it. It has an edge and a realness that prevents it from going into an overly sappy territory while also perfectly blending in the perfect amount of whimsy and imagination.

The monster's tales slowly unfold as Conor's mother's illness progresses, and the themes are equally present in both parts of the story. Conor learns that most people can't be categorized as heroes or villains, but have shades of both (like Conor's estranged father, who shows up to take Conor to an amusement park but can't be the dad Conor truly wants). He learns not to underestimate the healing powers of belief and hope. But the theme that had everyone wiping tears from their eyes is the universal message that life isn't always fair, that grieving is a part of life that nobody can escape from, and that, as Conor's dad tells, him, most people end up "messily ever after."

The movie will be released in theaters in December, and while it's not exactly uplifting holiday fare, it's the perfect movie to share with your family, (and an important one for older kids to see) - as long as you're not afraid to weep in front of them.

Here's the Mind-Blowing Twist in Arrival, Amy Adams's Alien Saga

Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner are starring in what might be the Toronto International Film Festival's biggest alien movie: Arrival. If you're thinking that in 2016, your alien movie needs a clear angle, it does: Adams is a language expert and it's up to her to try to communicate with aliens who have landed one of 12 spacecraft on Earth. While that admittedly isn't the most exciting thing, the movie has more than an angle: it has a huge twist. Now, this being a film festival screening two months before the movie's release on Nov. 11, you may not want to be spoiled. If that's the case, click away now. But if you're curious about just what this mind-blowing twist is and want to spoil it for yourself, keep reading.

One last time: WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD. Do not proceed further if you don't want to know what happens in the final act of Arrival.

So: Adams's linguist character Dr. Louise Banks is recruited by the US government for her translation skills. Before the landing, we see Louise's life in an emotional sequence: from the birth of her daughter, Hannah, bits of her childhood, and to Hannah's terminal cancer and death. It appears that Hannah's death has left Louise more alone than ever, as she's now childless and single (it's implied she'd been married but we don't see her husband in the flashback). Then, the "arrival" happens.

Twelve alien craft have landed on the planet, one of them in Montana, and there are two aliens with which the US is trying to communicate, but you know; they're aliens, and they just make strange noises. Louise's language expertise allows her to have a communication breakthrough, discovering that the "heptapods," as they come to be known, emit a smoke that makes symbols, effectively giving them written communication. Once Louise starts to decipher the symbols, the impatient world is ready to just destroy the ships out of fear, but she and Renner's mathematician character Ian are encouraged by their progress. Before that happens, Louise takes a risk and enters the ship alone, sucked up into the anti-gravity atmosphere. In the dreamy scene, one of the aliens communicates to Louise that they are giving her, and Earth, a gift. When she asks why, the answer is that in 3,000 years, their kind will need humanity's help. She wonders how they can see "the future," 3,000 years away.

The Twist

And now, here's the earth-shattering twist: the aliens don't see in the future, they just see time as being non-linear, which is the gift they give Louise. Or rather, have already given Louise; throughout her mission, she'd been having flashbacks of her time with her daughter, Hannah, but while she is having a vision of her in conversation with the alien, she asks, "who is this child?" It's then that you realize that during the present-day action of the movie, Louise has never had a child. Has never lost one. Has never been married. Yet. The sequence at the beginning of the film happens after her mission, but now she can see into her "future." Or rather, she sees her whole life, on a non-linear timeline. Renner's character Ian, who she works alongside in the mission, is the man she falls in love with later, marries, and shares Hannah with. The identity of the father is hidden until the last act, to throw you off the scent of the non-linear storytelling.

Thus, this "alien" story really becomes one of the life choices a person would make if they could see how their life turned out - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Nocturnal Animals Has the Movie Nudity Everyone's Going to Be Talking About This Fall

Tom Ford's latest film, Nocturnal Animals, is making a splash at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, for a variety of reasons. The noirish thriller stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams as exes with a complicated past, and the story finds them living separate lives in the present day. There are layers to dissect with this dark film, but there's one element that's guaranteed to have audiences buzzing from now through its Fall release: the nudity-packed opening sequence. (No, it's not Jake Gyllenhaal, and we are genuinely sorry about that.)

The movie opens with several different zaftig, older women totally naked - except for sashes and tiaras - dancing and jumping around provocatively. The sequence is confounding mostly for its place; as it's the very beginning, there's absolutely no context to define the burlesque show. Several minutes in, you finally see why: Adams's character is an art gallery owner, and this is an exhibit. Oh, everyone in the theater seemed to sigh, as its arty properties were revealed.

Still, designer-turned-director Ford admits he wasn't just going for an art-world atmosphere. At the film's debut at the Venice Film festival, Ford admitted that he was intending to be provocative with the opening, wanting to "emphasize the absurdity of our contemporary world . . . I also wanted to grab your attention." That he did. You can see the eye-opening scene for yourself when Nocturnal Animals is released on Nov. 18.

Brad Pitt on Trump Supporters: "I Try to Understand Where They're Coming From"

We already knew that Brad Pitt was Benjamin Button-ing his way through life, but the 52-year-old is actually looking younger than ever in T Magazine. Brad landed a cover story in the Fall Men's Fashion issue, and in his accompanying interview, the Allied star shared his thoughts on the recent Brexit decision as well as controversial presidential nominee Donald Trump. "Man, I never thought that would happen," Brad said of the United Kingdom's vote to leave the European Union, adding, "Same way I can't bring myself to think that Trump will be in charge."

Brad, who was born and raised in the Midwest, continued, "Coming from Oklahoma, southern Missouri, which leans more toward a Trump voice, I try to understand it. It seems that the people who suffer the most end up betting for the party that would hurt them . . . and so I try to understand where they're coming from." He talked about a conversation that he had recently with a scholar from Washington DC think tank the Brookings Institution, saying, "Most Americans don't have time to watch CNN and Fox and Al Jazeera. They're trying to make the rent, get the kids fed, they're tired when they get home and they want to forget about everything. And so suddenly when this voice comes in - and it doesn't have to be a voice of substance - saying he's fed up with all of this, that's the part that hooks into the DNA."

The father of six mused that "a lot of people feel alone," adding, "What I'm most hopeful about is that we're a global neighborhood now, and we start to understand each other more and more . . . and yet, you see this reactionary push for isolation and separation again." He went on: "A Trump supporter is fighting against just about everything. What does he even mean, 'take our country back?' Would someone please explain that to me? Where'd it go?"

Attention Vegans! Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips Are No Longer Dairy-Free!

I'm in shock. I feel completely betrayed. By a chocolate chip, of all things. It's a sad, sad day for those of us avoiding dairy because I just found out that Ghirardelli changed their recipe, and it's now made with whole milk powder. Horrifying, I know. I totally feel your pain. And now I find myself having to apologize to you, because for years, I've recommended Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips for my dairy-free and vegan recipes. So much sadness.

If you have packages in your kitchen, they might still be good. But if you go to buy new ones, you'll see the new ingredient list and start sobbing. But before you melt into a puddle of chocolate-covered depression, there are tons of companies that do offer dairy-free alternatives. Try one of these:

Not only am I in mourning over the loss of these chocolate chips, but now I'm questioning all the food I eat. What other companies have changed their recipes to include dairy?! We spend a lot of time label reading, double-checking to make sure the foods we buy are healthy and safe for us to eat. Once we know a product gets the green light, we wouldn't feel the need to check it again. But with this recent finding, I guess it's a reminder that no product is 100 percent safe forever. The next time you hit the store, you might want to take a peek at some of your tried-and-true faves before throwing them in your cart.

On a happier note, I just found out that all of Kashi's frozen waffles, crackers, and pita chips are now vegan!

Whoa - We've Just Found Jon Snow's Doppelganger

We've seen plenty of convincing cosplays over the years, but some people are simply destined to portray their favorite characters. Russian cosplayers Olya Bondarenko and Mikhail Selgis are two examples of this phenomenon. The pair, who frequently cosplay as Game of Thrones characters Melisandre and Jon Snow, bear uncanny resemblances to their character counterparts that'll make you do a double-take.

Olya also convincingly cosplays as Daenerys, Ygritte, and Margaery, and Mikhail sometimes dons red hair as a gender-bent Ygritte to complement Olya's female Jon Snow. They attend fan events together, stage photo shoots in faux-Westerosi locations, and generally blow our minds with their spot-on appearances. The St. Petersburg cosplayers also post their costumes on Instagram, where they first grabbed our attention. Lucky for us, they've got plenty of photographic evidence of these glorious cosplays for us to enjoy - trust us, you won't understand how eerily similar they look to their GoT counterparts until you see it.

Taylor Swift Sings Along to Calvin Harris's Song While Cheering on Gigi Hadid at NYFW

Taylor Swift stepped out with model Martha Hunt for Tommy Hilfiger's fashion show at Pier 16 in NYC on Friday. The duo was front and center to cheer on their pal, Gigi Hadid, as she strutted her stuff on the runway and modeled her own collection with the designer. In addition to making her first public appearance since her split from Tom Hiddleston and posing for pictures with Gigi's mom, Yolanda Hadid, Lewis Hamilton, and Tommy and Dee Hilfiger, Taylor took to Instagram to congratulate Gigi on the success of her show, writing, "SO PROUD OF YOU GIGI!!!! That show was INSANE. Congrats to Gi, Tommy, and all the girls who just owned that runway!!" Along with the sweet note, the "Bad Blood" singer shared a video of herself singing along to ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris's "This Is What You Came For."

In July, it was revealed that the track was secretly written by Taylor under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg when she was dating Calvin, and despite the DJ not thanking her at the VMAs during his pretaped acceptance speech, it looks like the bad blood may be over between the former couple.

Now that school is almost in session, I'm starting to compile my shopping list for school lunches. One of the biggest challenges as a busy momista is finding delicious and easy school lunches that Liam and Stella won't get tired of seeing in their lunch boxes week after week.

Now there's a reason the PB&J sandwich is such a lunch box staple. No two flavors go together quite like peanut butter and jelly. But as yummy as this sweet and salty combo is, plain old bread, peanut butter, and jam can get a little boring after a while. So today I'm sharing a few creative twists on the classic PB&J. Based on what a hit my PB and Cocoa Krispies Sandwich was with my babes, I have a feeling these recipes are going to be new favorites. And if your kiddos' school doesn't allow peanuts because of allergies, almond or sunflower seed butter will taste just as yummy.

Which recipe are you most excited to try?

Taylor Swift's New Favorite Bag Isn't Actually a Bag at All

Taylor Swift's designer bag collection may be pretty impressive, but lately, the singer's been ditching her larger, classic options for something small and simple: a Bandolier phone case. So this year, we're leaving the barely there styles behind in favor of more modest attire. Think costumes you can create with your favorite long-sleeved shirt or that fur vest hanging in your closet. You might even find pieces in your PJ collection to create a one-and-done look. Read on for 19 modest costumes begging to be worn out on Oct. 31, then walk those 10 blocks to that party feeling comfier, chicer, and possibly warmer than ever.

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo Have Changed Their Mind About Selling Their NYC Loft

Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine and Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo put their2,800-square-foot loft in New York City on the market in April. Centered in SoHo, the spacious home was listed after being occupied for nearly two years since the couple got married in July 2014. The move was thought to be so they could find a more kid-friendly space for their first baby — but in a surprising move, they've just pulled the listing and insteadlisted Adam's Beverly Hills mansion. It seems the A-list tot will be raised in the Big Apple.
The home had been listed for $5.5 million — slightly higher than the $4.4 million it was purchased for — and buyers were enticed by an open kitchen with black granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, elevator entrance, and a 60-foot living room that features exposed brick walls. The 13-foot ceilings add a ton of breathing room while six columns are spaced throughout the stylish one-bedroom, two-bathroom loft. The pair was also offering to include the furniture for an additional price.
While the living room area boasts an urban-chic vibe, the master bath is sleek with marble flooring and walls. Exposed brick continues on the walls of the bedroom, which also enjoys abundant natural lighting and a spacious walk-in closet.
Check out the photos ahead for a full tour of the spectacular space, and you'll understand why Adam and Behati decided to stay.

Hold Up - Is the Barre Tuck Actually Bad for You?

More isn't always better, so how do we know when we've had it with the tuck? Our friends atShape break down the infamous position from your favorite cardio barre classes.
If you've ever been to a barre class, you know that it's all about the barre tuck. Your instructor reminds you in every position, during every rep, to make sure your booty isn't sticking out, but perfectly scooped under. (This fitness fad is ballerina-inspired, not Beyonce-inspired, after all.) You secretly envy and admire that one girl in class who is clearly a barre pro - the instructor compliments her on maintaining her tuck at least once or twice per class. (Do this at-home barre workout to perfect your moves even when you can't make it to class.)
While striving for the perfectly maintained tuck might seem like the ultimate #barregoals, there's something you should know. The barre tuck, or what it has turned into, might actually be bad for you.

What the Tuck?

It all comes down to alignment, says Karli Taylor, founder and creator of BarreFlow and CPT and creative exercise specialist. The OG tuck comes (like barre) straight from ballet; it's all about getting shoulders, hips, heels and toes all aligned.
"The barre tuck is actually just a way to get a neutral pelvis," says Taylor. "When you think about it, if you just stand up on your toes, your body leans forward. So to prevent that, you have to bend your knees. And to prevent your shoulders from going way in front of your knees, you have to tuck your tailbone under. So that brings you back to square one, back to neutral."
But, the fitness industry's "more is better" mentality has instructors and participants over-tucking past the neutral pelvis and creating a posterior pelvic tilt, which is when problems start to arise, says Taylor.

Why is That So Bad?

Most of us naturally have an anterior pelvic tilt (read: your butt is sticking out and back is arched), she says. This comes from long hours of sitting, and the fact that we generally use the muscles on the front of our body more than those on the back (think: we walk, run, cycle, etc. going forward).
When you force your body into a posterior pelvic tilt, you're putting pressure on the discs in your back from another direction, creating joint instability in your lumbar spine and sacroiliac (SI) joint, says Taylor. This puts you at risk for sciatica (chronic lower back pain), herniated or bulging disks in the lumbar spine, leg and foot numbness, hamstrings cramps and tightening, and kyphosis (a rounding in the upper back to compensate). ( Try this barre workout to test your tuck and improve your balance.)
"Inherently, there's nothing wrong with the barre tuck," she says. "But more isn't better. You want to bring your pelvis to a neutral position - you don't want to push your hips forward so you look like Steve Urkel."
Red flags: you feel any sort of lower back pain, especially on the sides of your spine where the SI joint is located (between your lower back and tailbone), you feel numbness in your leg, or cramping in your abdominal muscles.

So How Do You Tuck the Right Way?

Think about your pelvis like a bucket of water, says Taylor. Put your hands on your hips - that's the mouth of the bucket. If you stick your butt out and arch your back, you'll create an anterior pelvic tilt, and water would be spilling out of the front of the bucket. If you really tuck your hips and pull your tailbone under, you'll create a posterior pelvic tilt, and water would be spilling out of the back of the bucket. A neutral spine and pelvic tilt will keep the water right in its place.
A trick for getting into that correct tilt is as simple as thinking about pulling your belly button in, then up under your ribcage - but don't let it change your breathing. Perform this drill while talking and see if it changes your voice at all (it shouldn't).
"Usually when you say 'pull in your core,' people are going to suck in and hold their breath, like they're bracing their stomach to take a punch," she says. "And that's not what this should be. Pulling the belly button in and up is what's going to engage the transverse abdominus, which is your 'underneath' ab muscles, and that's what's going to bring your pelvis back to neutral."
And BTW, the tuck is not like a crunch or an ab workout. Try it right now; scoop your hips under and pull your abs in. Can you feel the bottom of your abdominal muscles getting all scrunched in at the bottom?
"It's not actually working that muscle," says Taylor. "You're just putting it in a compromised position. Some people actually pull muscles in their lower abdomen area because they're tucking too much."

You're Thinking: I've Been Barre Tucking Like That Forever, and I'm Fine.

Doing a barre tuck wrong won't make you spontaneously combust or crumble into a million pieces on the floor. Because it's an overuse injury, it could take a long time of improper form to show up - but the results aren't pretty, says Taylor.
"Barre has been popular for a couple of years, so now is when you're going to see these injuries," she says. "A tuck injury will probably not be an acute injury where someone hurts themselves on the spot - it's like any overuse injury. For example, if you're running with poor form, you may be able to do it for five years and suddenly you have plantar fasciitis or a stress fracture. Over time, these little things get worse.
We aren't hating on barre - after all, it can be great for toning and lengthening all those muscles. But, like any workout, you need to do it right. So double check your tuck before the next time you hit the barre.

The Best Macro-Balanced Snacks For Weight Loss

Nutrition coach and macro expert Carrie McMahon has been showing us how to count macros for weight loss and how that looks in terms of breakfastlunch, and dinner. And today, we're focusing on macro snacks for weight loss!
"For snacks, I recommend sticking to mostly protein and fat combined - fiber is a bonus," Carrie said. "That combo always keeps me feeling satisfied until the next meal, and gives me enough energy to keep going!"
Her favorite snacks are an apple with peanut butter or some kind of jerky (she loves Caveman Foods Primal Bars) and nuts, but she said "that can get pretty boring, pretty quickly." To mix it up, she suggested some of her favorite POPSUGAR recipes.

This Colorful Picture of Mercury Is So Pretty You'll Want It on a T-Shirt

It feels like every few weeks, NASA releases another spellbinding, celestial picture that makes us feel really, really small. A recent trending photo of Mercury is currently having that effect on us.

Three years ago, in February 2013, NASA captured a hypnotizing photograph of Mercury during the Messenger's primary mission to become the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury, which it successfully accomplished. The picture, though very beautiful, does not represent how Mercury might look to the human eye. Instead, the photo was enhanced to reflect the different elements that make up the planet's surface.

Given how awe-inspiring it is, we can understand why it's currently trending on Reddit even though it's a bit old.

Why Millions Have Watched This Mom's Shoe-Tying Tutorial

If you're struggling to teach your kid how to tie their shoes, one mom might have a solution.

Last month, Kirsten Johnson, the mom behind Unstoppable Mother, took to Facebook to live stream her tutorial for what she deemed "the world's easiest way to teach your kids to tie their shoes for back to school."

In the video, her four-step shoe-tying demo looked simple enough, but when she turned the camera on her own 7-year-old son, Rylan, who'd "had some frustration with the bunny ears" and only just learned this new technique, viewers got to see how quick a skill it really is to learn.

The short, two-minute clip has been viewed more than 5.8 million times, and fans are still raving about it on Kirsten's Facebook page.

"I absolutely love reading these comments hearing how children are doing this and feeling amazing because they can now tie shoes," she wrote in a comment today. "That was the purpose of my video. It was to help give any child the confidence that they can tie their shoes and they don't have to give up, or get frustrated."

Prepare to Turn Up, Because Bomba Estéreo Just Released Their "Soy Yo" Music Video

Bomba Estéreo just released the music video for their hit "Soy Yo," and let's just say, it's a fun one! The Colombian band recruited an unbelievably confident little girl to star in the video, where she struts her stuff and flaunts her moves regardless of her glaring haters.

And if you're wondering why this catchy song sounds SO familiar, it's because "Soy Yo" has been playing in those awesome Target commercials with Rita Moreno, Gaby Espino, and Dulce Candy.

"The video concept was perfect for a song that touches on bullying and intolerance, issues that worry all of us. The way the story in the clip handles those issues is very different and it gives our song a whole new meaning," the band's lead singer, Li Saumet, told Billboard about the concept behind the pumped-up video. To inspire new ideas, the band actually held a contest for artists around the world to submit unique, creative ideas for this project and went with a Danish director.

In honor of this adorable little girl, let's put on our overalls and dance the weekend away!
