All the Times Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Have Been Spotted Together Since Their Split

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their plans to divorce back in June 2015, but it's hard not to notice how much we've seen them out and about together since their split. It's almost as if they haven't really broken up at all. Yes, the couple did say that they would be keeping a united front for the sake of their three kids, and they have been spotted on numerous outings with them - but they've also been photographed spending time together without their little ones, including dinner dates and office visits; earlier this year, they met up at Vanity Fair's annual post-Oscars bash and spent the holidays together, though sources close to the couple have said that they "find it annoying" to deal with each other so closely.

More details about the couple's estrangement came from Jennifer herself, in a soul-baring profile for Vanity Fair's March issue. The actress opened up about all those rumors of infidelity and shut down that unfortunate nanny scandal by saying that she "had nothing to do" with their split. Despite the obvious hardships and challenges, it seems as though Ben and Jen are truly working hard to keep their relationship amicable for the sake of Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. We've rounded up all the times they've been seen out together since announcing their split.

Huma Abedin Stands Behind Hillary Clinton, but Her Style Is Unmissable

Huma Abedin is a well-known politician who has backed Hillary Clinton since 2008, though she was hired as her intern in 1996. Now, she serves as vice chairwoman of Hillary's campaign and makes many appearances alongside the Democratic nominee. While Huma could keep her wardrobe to neutral shifts and black pumps, she's had plenty of time to experiment. Keeping things plain is not her cup of tea.

Huma is one of those leaders who commands attention. She rarely repeats an outfit and is always fully accessorized from head to toe. When she's on the red carpet, like at the White House Correspondents' Dinner or the Met Gala, she selects designer pieces that speak to her unique style - it's polished but colorful and rarely without a flash of metallics.

For her wedding to former Congressman Anthony Weiner, Huma wore a gilded Oscar de la Renta gown that made the fashion world stir. The pair have since separated, but an image of Huma in her embellished cap-sleeve dress will always live on in our minds. That, and the 22 bold style notes we're taking from her. Read on to see why whenever Hillary's around, we look for the sophisticated lady standing behind her.

Now that American Horror Story has finally blessed us with the start of its sixth season, you would think that the wait for more Evan Peters would be over. Unfortunately, after two episodes, we still have yet to see his beautiful (but probably scary) face on the small screen. You can also just bask in all of his hot pictures. Keep reading for all the Evan Peters glory, and when you're done, take a look back at his first-ever red carpet appearance.

This Art Will Make You Wish Tim Burton Directed Superhero Movies

Tim Burton has made a career out of films featuring creepy protagonists. However, artist Andrew Tarusov's spooky superhero illustrations (created in the filmmaker's signature style) will make you wish Burton directed comic films instead. From a stick-thin Deadpool with a severed hand to a Wonder Woman who could be Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas's sister, these willowy heroes would make incredible comics. Can't you imagine Johnny Depp as Iron Man and Helena Bonham-Carter as Lois Lane? You can buy the entire series on Tarusov's site . . . though, fair warning, they'll make you desperate for Burton to sign onto a superhero film deal.

These Kids Watched the Presidential Debate, and This Is What They Realized

A group of kids stayed up to watch last night's first presidential debate, and they made some simple yet eye-opening observations during Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump's performance. While they're not able to vote just yet, it's worth hearing their honest opinions. When it comes to their temperament, one boy noted, "I feel like Hillary Clinton is making a really good point and Donald Trump has just been raging a lot. He's been getting angry and interrupting people."

But even looking past how they delivered their statements, one child questioned the substance behind what Trump was actually saying. "Donald Trump just keeps saying the same thing over and over again, like it will have more meaning each time he says it."

As far as some of the bigger issues are concerned, like stop and frisk, one child had a very important question for Trump: "Would you want your brother, your dad, your son, daughter, or your sister to be randomly stopped in the street and patted down for doing nothing? That doesn't sound like equal rights to anyone, does it?"

Check out the rest of their thoughts in the above video.

Can't Wait For the New Season of Younger? Soak Up These Juicy Details

If you're hooked on TV Land's Younger, you're not alone. Last season ended with a shocking set of twists: Kelsey's fiancé dies in a freak accident, things get more complicated between Liza and Josh, and Charles has made it obvious that he has feelings for Liza as well. We're delighted to say the show is coming back so much sooner than you think - in fact, it's back this week! - so there's no time like the present to prepare yourself.

1. Liza Is in a Full-Blown Love Triangle

We probably could've seen this one coming. Liza has two men vying for her attention: the loyal, lovable Josh and her newly interested boss, Charles. Josh might be immature, but he knows Liza's secret and he's sticking by her side. And while Charles may be more Liza's speed, he thinks she's 26. Talk about complicated.

2. Sh*t Gets Real in the Official Trailer

Looks like Liza's going to have a lot of balls in the air this time around . . . more than ever before.

3. A New Face Has Joined the Fold

In September, Deadline reported that Mr. Robot's Ben Rappaport had joined the cast. He'll be playing medical intern Max Horowitz, a new love interest for Lauren.

4. Liza's Not the Only One With Issues

Kelsey, of course, is still dealing with her grief after the death of Thad. The fact that he has a slightly predatory twin brother named Chad is only making things worse. Will Kelsey get with her lost one's brother? Will she start to pave her own way? We'll have to wait and see.

5. It's Coming So Much Sooner Than You Think

While the previous seasons of the show aired in January, the third season has been moved into a Fall slot. It's set to premiere Sept. 28!

13 Times Keri Russell Oozed Cool, Laid-Back City Girl

It's been a long time since Keri Russell's Felicity days, but the actress is still traipsing around New York City like a breath of fresh air. These days, though, Keri primarily hangs in Brooklyn with her family: her boyfriend and The Americans costar, Matthew Rhys; their newborn baby boy, Sam; and Keri's daughter, Willa, and son, River, from her previous marriage to Shane Deary. Besides being a total fashion inspiration and bringing her sartorial excellence to the red carpet, Keri also happens to be a down-to-earth borough babe - she's often spotted riding her bike around town like any other normal, cool city girl and has been photographed doing the school drop-off, schlepping paint samples while pregnant, and picking up beer on a hot Summer day. We're paying homage to Keri's low-profile Brooklyn lifestyle and rounding up all the times she made us proud to be city girls, too.

Gina Rodriguez's Alter Ego "Cutz" Is a Bona Fide Rap Star

Just when you thought Gina Rodriguez couldn't get any cuter, she debuts her seriously impressive rap skills on late-night TV.

The Jane the Virgin star, who has been sharing tons of behind-the-scenes photos of season three, stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Sept. 26, where she showed off her hidden talent to the tune of Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass."

According to Gina, her rapping alter ego - dubbed "Cutz" - made many appearances at college parties during her time at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Press play above to watch Gina (sorry, Cutz) channel her inner Nicki. Then, get inspired by her enviable style so far this year.

Proof That Hillary Clinton Is The Office's Jim Halpert During This Election

The first presidential debate was rife with moments that caused a lot of spot-on social media commentary, including one in particular that is everywhere on the internet. It's when Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton broke the so-called fourth wall and looked into the camera with a facial expression that practically screamed, "Are you all hearing what I'm hearing?" Many have since compared her to-camera expression to Jim Halpert's many reactions on The Office. As it turns out, the comparison is insanely spot-on.

Look ahead for some hilarious reactions that compare Hillary to Jim.

All the Times You Just Couldn't Relate to Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow can't stop making headlines with her candid comments, whether she's calling for an end to the mommy wars or likening dealing with Internet bullies to going through actual war. She's often a bit over the top and it can be hard to relate, like when she told CNNMoney that she is like the "common woman" but stays in beachfront villas that cost $40,000 a week. While we can't deny that Gwyneth's given some good advice over the years - and she's one of our favorite famous blondes - we also can't ignore all those totally unrelatable moments. Let's take a look at them now.

This American Horror Story Theory Makes a Scary Amount of Sense

Each season of American Horror Story tells a new horror story that is seemingly unrelated to the others, but Roanoke has a potentially unique tie to the seasons before it. Haven't quite figured it out? There is a theory out there that tries to explain it.

First of all, we know for a fact that each season is secretly connected to each other because creator Ryan Murphy told us so. "They're all connected," he told Entertainment Weekly in 2015. "There's definitely a rhyme or a reason and a connectedness to all of these seasons . . . They're all very separate but there are clues every season that we're now telling you how the different worlds are intertwined."

So how exactly will this be done? Here's a theory: each episode is a callback to a specific episode. Episode one is Murder House, given that it's all about a new couple moving into a house and then being haunted by multiple ghosts like the first season. Episode two is Asylum, as evidenced by the two dead nurses attending to elderly patients . . . and then killing them. This more medical storyline is definitely reminiscent of the second season. According to the theory, this trend will continue to happen until episode six - since we are in the sixth season.

"You'll see starting in episode six, the show has a huge turn and the thing that you think you're watching is not what you're watching," Murphy recently told EW. "Even though the subject matter has gotten out, it's irrelevant because nobody gets what we're doing. No matter what you think it is, it's not that. Then, episode six comes and you're like, 'Wait! What happened?'"

So what could possibly be the game changer for that sixth episode? We're not really sure, but we know that it's supposed to be a completely different story entirely and continue on that until episode 10. Perhaps it will show how all of these past seasons tie together through a new story. But for now we're enjoying the references to our beloved previous seasons.

The Infruriating Story Behind This Mom Who Was Nearly Arrested For Breastfeeding in Public

In Columbus, Georgia, one mom had a traumatic interaction with a police officer when he threatened to arrest her for breastfeeding her child inside a Piggly Wiggly supermarket. Her incensed retelling of the story, shown above, has since gone viral.

On Facebook, Savvy Shukla explained she was grocery shopping with her two children when she needed to breastfeed her youngest child who is 1 month old. It was then that the police officer approached her and asked her to cover up as some people might find it offensive.

Even though Savvy expressed is was legal for her to breastfeed her baby in public, the officer told her that was not the case. According to Savvy, he said, "You just think you know what the law says." He added, "If your nipple becomes exposed, I really don't want to have to arrest you or you be arrested for being offensive."

Since the incident, Savvy has reported it to the management at Piggly Wiggly and has spoken to several outlets in an effort to end the shame surrounding breastfeeding. Coincidentally, a paralegal shopping at the same supermarket witnessed Savvy's experience and has since offered to help her by corroborating her story in a separate Facebook post, also included above.

Kat Von D Is Making Her Cult-Favorite Contour Palette For All Skin Tones

After a Viral Video Saved Their Child’s Life, These Parents Are Determined to Return the Favor

After the internet saved Eliza O'Neill's life, her grateful parents,Cara and Glenn, are using it to try and help other children who are still suffering.

Three years ago, Eliza was first diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome at just 3 years old. This rare disease has been described as "childhood Alzheimer's," and it is estimated that 1 in 70,000 newborns are diagnosed at birth. Because it's degenerative, those with it will eventually lose the ability to walk or talk while also most likely suffering from seizures and joint stiffness.

These distraught parents also knew the sobering truth that the majority of children who suffer from this syndrome do not live past their teen years. However, her parents were determined to find a different outcome for their little girl and decided to get creative with their plea for help: they enlisted the help of a photographer to create an emotional video telling Eliza's story.

This heart-wrenching video went viral online and the family's Cure Sanfilippo Foundation has since raised more than $3 million to fund new research. While Eliza has since lost the ability to speak, she has become the first child in the world to be treated with a new gene-therapy clinical trial. In order to qualify for this potentially life-saving treatment, Cara and Glenn, as well as Eliza and her brother, Beckham, decided to isolate their family to protect Eliza from catching a serious virus. What they thought would be 100 days of isolation turned into a startling 726 days, but since receiving the treatment her parents are hopeful for Eliza's future.

"The quiet moments at night when I read her a book or sing her a song, she smiles and looks deep into my eyes," Glenn told the Huffington Post. "I believe she is understanding. These small moments give us hope. We used to take these things for granted, but not anymore."

Eliza's family also emphasizes that they raised money for the gene therapy without knowing if Eliza would be included in the clinical trial. "We knew if we didn't help get the trial up and running, and fast, she would have no chance because the disease is rapidly degenerative," Glenn said. "We chose to tell our very personal 'Saving Eliza' story for the greater cause for all children."

After the impact of their first video, the family has now shared Eliza's "miracle" story in an attempt to spread the message that if they don't manage to raise more money for research - fast - all of the other children who weren't selected for the trial when continue to degenerate before dying. "That is the reality," Glenn said. "It is agony on parents. These kids are on a timeline, and there is life-saving urgency."

Whether they have been impacted by Sanfilippo syndrome or not, Glenn and Cara know that Eliza's story has resonated with many and hope that people continue to share her story. "I think Eliza has touched the world by giving parents additional perspective into how much of a gift it is to have healthy children ― perspective to remember to enjoy the moments, take nothing for granted, and fiercely love," said Glenn. "Parents would go to the ends of the earth for their kids, and parents can relate with our cause and the fight we are in."

At the end of their original 'Saving Eliza' video, Glenn notes that Eliza said, 'Please share.' "Well, she can no longer say those words at this time, so we'd ask for her, that those moved by her story please donate and share to save children's lives," Glenn said. "Hope is a nice word, but we need action. It is the action that makes the difference."

My Mom Was Latina, My Dad Isn't - 10 Annoying Comments I'm Tired of Hearing

As a multiracial woman with a Peruvian-born mom and a white American dad, I can say life can be a little bit complicated. Growing up, it definitely wasn't the "cool" thing to be multiracial, especially in small-town Oregon where I spent my high school years, so I didn't really start to embrace the Peruvian part of my identity until I got to college. And while I have always taken pride in being Latina - it certainly has come with some built-in perks, like being fluent in Spanish by preschool - the whole thing comes with its fair share of eye-roll-worthy moments. Cue that time customers at my high-school waitressing job assumed I didn't speak English because of the way I looked.

If this story sounds familiar, chances are this roundup of other annoying comments and struggles will be too. Keep scrolling for the most frustrating moments I've faced.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Nail Art Is the Beauty Way to Show Your Support

The 2016 presidential election is sure to be one of the most unique in history: it is the first time a woman has won the Democratic nomination and a famous business mogul won the Republican one. This means we millennials need to make our voices heard more than ever. No matter which party you support (and maybe it's neither of the main two), you should utilize your right to vote.

Some people let others know how they feel via Facebook or Twitter posts, which is a fantastic medium for self expression. But if you want to make a simple and creative statement, you can also rock politics-inspired nail art and then share the look on Instagram. Celebrities, such as Katy Perry and Chloë Grace Moretz, have already tried this marketing tactic. So catch up on the Republican National Convention, and tune in for the Democratic one. Perhaps it will inspire your next manicure design!

American Horror Story: Is Billie Dean Howard Behind My Roanoke Nightmare?

American Horror Story: Roanoke has just started, but the fan theories are already rolling! Ryan Murphy has assured us that this season is somehow tied to previous ones, so we're all trying to figure out how. There is one in particular that ties Billie Dean to My Roanoke Nightmare, and it's really blowing our mind!

Billie Dean Howard is Sarah Paulson's character from Murder House. She is a medium who mentions she is shooting a reality show for Lifetime. She helps Constance contact Tate in the house, but she ends up contacting the other ghosts as well. So, how could she possibly tie in with My Roanoke Nightmare?

We know that this season switches up the show's format to being a basic-cable-type documentary. We have characters who actually went through the haunting telling the story through confessionals while, simultaneously, there are actors portraying them and what happened. According to a new fan theory, one possible reason for this change is that each episode of this season is actually a part of Billie Dean's Lifetime show.

This isn't the only way the psychic has been connected to this new season. Back in the season one episode "Birth," Billie Dean tells the story of the Roanoke colony members who were haunting a native tribe until its elder cursed them. All of their things were burned, and they were cast out by the word "Croatoan." Billie Dean tries to use this curse herself, but it goes wrong.

We know this season is about the Roanoke colony, and we have seen what could be assumed to be their leader (Kathy Bates) punish one of its members by putting a pig's head on him and roasting him like he's a pig. Perhaps we will learn about the curse that Billie Dean once mentioned. If this is true, then we may see Billie Dean come out of character as Shelby and be herself by the end of the season - potentially episode six, since that's when Murphy says the big twist is coming. Since she has some "abilities," maybe she will be able to break the curse or see what the colonists want.

#NoSizeFitsAll Proves That Clothing Sizes Don't Mean a Damn Thing

It may have garnered some attention during London Fashion Week, but the UK's Women's Equality Party campaign, #NoSizeFitsAll, is continuing to gain traction - and inspire women. That's because the the movement's message is pretty clear: clothing labels don't really mean anything - especially since one person could fit into multiple sizes, depending on the brand - and it's time to stop those negative feelings we experience while shopping. On its Instagram page, WEP has shared photos showing women holding up their tags, accompanied by the hashtag and the shocking fact that, in the UK, 1 in 5 women cut the label out of their clothes, and 70% state they do so out of shame and embarrassment at their size.

How to Dress Like a Starbucks #PinkDrink For Halloween

Starbucks's #PinkDrink has taken over your Instagram feed, and as with any viral hit, it's likely to become one of 2016's most popular Halloween costumes. That's why I decided to plan early and dream up a #PinkDrink costume that's easy to re-create in an hour or less while still looking incredibly creative. The best part is that you can easily transform this into a group costume and create the whole line of Rainbow Drinks.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1-2 safety pins
  • 1 color printout of the Starbucks logo, cut into a circle
  • 1 pink dress (preferably strapless)
  • 1 large green Starbucks straw and plastic cup lid
  • 1 pair of red shoes/heels (bonus if they look like strawberries!)
  • 1 Pink Drink (optional, but it ties the costume together)

Once you've assembled your costume components, pin the Starbucks logo to the front of the dress using safety pins. Tie your hair into a topknot and stick the straw through the bun at a diagonal. Stick the cup lid through the straw and rest it along the top of the bun. Strap on your shoes and hold a Pink Drink in hand, and prepare to make other Starbucks fanatics like yourself really happy at the sight of you!

The Viral Story of a Stranger's Good Deed at a Gas Station Will Give You Chills

One man's uplifting encounter with a stranger at a gas station serves as a much-needed reminder to embrace the kindness of others and pass it on.

In Albury, Australia, Tyson Crawley stopped at a gas station before work to refuel his car and grab iced coffee when he realized he didn't have his brand-new bank card with him. Scrambling, Tyson tried using a different card but was completely blanking on that card's PIN number. Faced with a $110 bill, his dogs barking outside, and the realization that he would likely be late for work, he began to panic. That's when a total stranger intervened.

The stranger was previously in the gas station to purchase a cup of coffee. When he noticed Tyson struggling, he walked back in and asked Tyson if he needed some money. Tyson initially rejected the act of kindness due to the large amount he owed but eventually accepted and told the stranger he would transfer him the money back. The stranger agreed, wrote down his number on the back of the receipt, and then took a selfie with Tyson who insisted he capture the touching moment.

When Tyson later looked at the back of the receipt, he saw what the stranger had actually written: "Pass it on." You can read the story from Tyson in his Facebook post below.

In his retelling the story on Facebook, Tyson wrote, "Please be beautiful people, and remember it's not about keeping up with the joneses, having the biggest house, most expensive car, the largest bank account, but work with each other." He ended with,"After all, what is money compared to the quality of human life?" The powerful post has more than 900 reactions, 200 shares, and 100 comments on Facebook - although those numbers will likely increase as the story spreads.

After some investigating, it was discovered that the kind stranger is John Kennedy Jr., a former ice hockey player from Michigan who currently works for a geotech company. John spoke with Mashable about the encounter and said, "I saw a brother in need and just wanted to help." Adding, "Tyson asked me to write my number down and I didn't want him to return the money, I just thought 'pass it on' as in pass on 'something good.'"

Both John and Tyson have expressed feeling awestruck by the response their story has received.

A Brief History of Marvel's Luke Cage, Your Latest Netflix Obsession

Luke Cage, Marvel and Netflix's latest entry in their ever-expanding television universe, is almost upon us. Much like Jessica Jones before, Luke's background isn't as commonly known as many of the other heroes on the Marvel roster. Many would be surprised to learn that "Luke Cage" isn't even the character's birth name. Here's what you need to know about the character before you dive into the show on Friday.

Growing up in Harlem, Carl Lucas and his friend Willis Stryker are both gang members who commit petty crimes. As he becomes an adult, Lucas begins resenting the pain his behavior is causing his family and others in the community. He turns his back on the crime world and never looks back. Although they remain friends, Stryker continues to climb the ranks of organized crime. The mob eventually puts a hit out on Stryker, who is only saved when Lucas gets involved. After this incident, Stryker's girlfriend, Reva Connors, breaks up with him out of fear of the violent work he continues to be involved with. Connors seeks comfort in Lucas, leading Stryker to blame him for the end of their relationship.

Stryker steals heroin from the drug kingpin Cornell Cottonmouth (played by Mahershala Ali in the series) and plants it in Lucas' apartment. Once he finishes, he tips off the police and Lucas is sent to prison. Furious at his friend's betrayal, Lucas would frequently get into fights with other inmates. He is eventually transferred to Seagate Prison and attracts the attention of an abusive guard named Albert "Billy Bob" Rackham. Rackham would constantly bully and harass the imprisoned Lucas.

Eventually, Lucas is recruited to be a volunteer in an experiment testing a new version of the Super-Soldier Serum, the same one that originally gives Captain America his strength. The scientist performing the experiment, Dr. Noah Burnstein, surrounds a secured Lucas in an electrical field containing an organic chemical compound. Dr. Burnstein leaves for only a moment, and a recently demoted Rackham seizes his opportunity. Turning the controls much higher than intended, he bombards Lucas with the electricity.

It doesn't kill Lucas. Instead, he gains impenetrable skin and the strength to lift 25 tons and punch through 4 inches of steel. He is able to escape the prison and upon doing so adopts the alias "Luke Cage." Shortly after, he establishes himself as a "Hero for Hire" willing to assist those in need - for a price. Jessica Jones doesn't enter his life until well after he is an established hero in the comics. The two have a drunken one-night stand (as seen in Jessica Jones), and shortly thereafter, Jessica lets Luke know that she is pregnant with who would become their daughter, Danielle Jones (not seen in Jessica Jones). They end up getting married and are involved with several different superhero teams over the years.

How closely the Netflix series will stick to this origin story remains to be seen, but a brief clip does show the character emerging from a tank with his original "Power Man" costume's metal cuffs and headband. The show premieres in its entirety on Netflix this Friday.

This New Netflix Documentary Shines a Bright and Shocking Spotlight on Modern Racism

If you couldn't get enough of Netflix's chilling docuseries Making a Murderer, chances are you'll be just as interested in their latest prison documentary. The new original film is called 13TH, and it's produced by Ava DuVernay, who also produced 2014's Selma. 13TH refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States." The documentary drops Oct. 7, but for now, you can watch the trailer above to see how the amendment served as a catalyst for the horrors of the modern American prison industry and all of the corruption that lies therein.

Indulge in Fall Comfort Foods Without Packing On Pounds: Here's How

So you're on a diet or working toward a weight-loss goal just as we're heading into the holiday season and arguably the best food-flavor season: Fall. No pumpkin pie? No mashed potatoes? How will anyone survive?

Don't freak out, because you can absolutely partake in the food festivities of the season. Alexandra Miller, RDN, LDN, corporate dietitian at Medifast, gave us some tips on how to totally indulge and enjoy delicious Fall foods and flavors without wrecking our weight-loss progress. Take notes, friends.

Focus on fruits and veggies.

"Fall flavors come in many forms beyond pie and stuffing." Try the fruits and veggies of the season - naturally low in calories and "packed with health-promoting nutrients, including dietary fiber, a nutrient that helps fill us up, stabilize blood sugar levels, and promote optimal digestion," Miller said in an email to POPSUGAR. She suggests adding produce into each meal and gave some great examples on how to do so.

  • Add pumpkin puree to chili.
  • Throw slices of pear into a grilled cheese.
  • Toss some chopped apple and pomegranate seeds on salads.
  • Stuff acorn or butternut squash with lean turkey sausage and apples.
  • Spiralize sweet potatoes or try spaghetti squash in place of pasta (she noted that a cup of spaghetti squash has 40 calories and a cup of spaghetti has 220 calories).
  • Grate cauliflower and use it to make pizza crusts or tortillas.
  • Bake apples (cored; peeled, optional).
  • Stew pears with cinnamon and serve with low-fat vanilla yogurt for a healthy dessert option.

Modify your favorites

You don't have to sacrifice traditional favorites when you cook them yourself - just modify the recipe and make it healthier according to your needs.

"Love pumpkin pie? Make your own crust-less version," she said. "In the mood for chili? Use lean ground turkey, pumpkin puree, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, and all of your favorite chili spices; top with plain Greek yogurt, chopped scallions, and/or slices of avocado. Baking something? Add pureed butternut squash, cranberries, or shredded apple for an extra boost of fiber."

Choose wisely

You don't have to deprive yourself completely, but focus on portion control. "Only splurge on a small serving of something that is truly worth it, like your mom's homemade pumpkin bread," she said. "Don't waste calories on anything that isn't extraordinary."

Miller also noted the importance of controlling portions and to try to avoid eating second helpings. "Use small plates (perhaps an appetizer or dessert plate) and at lunch and dinner, fill half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables and a third with lean protein." She also noted that you should "eat food slowly so that your body can register when it is full."

Another portion-control technique? Make foods smaller. Her examples:

  • Sliders instead of full-size burgers.
  • Meatloaf muffins instead of a whole meatloaf.
  • Pumpkin mini muffins instead of pumpkin bread (using a mini muffin tin).

Another delicious recipe suggestion: make burgers with lean ground turkey and fresh cranberries. For meatloaf, Miller suggests adding pumpkin puree in with lean ground beef or turkey.

Enjoy a cup of joe

"Pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin coffee . . . it can be hard to resist!" she said. Miller cited the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans: three to five eight-ounce cups of coffee per day can be incorporated into a healthy diet. She noted that this amount of coffee isn't dangerous, nor has it been "associated with an increased risk of major chronic disease, like cancer or cardiovascular disease." But wait, there's more.

"In fact, it may even help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce cravings." Wait, did she just say . . . reduce cravings?! Pour another cup! "The key is to keep your coffee free of added sugars, syrups, and cream. Avoid high-calorie specialty drinks, and stick with plain coffee and a splash of non-fat milk or unsweetened almond milk."

Still need some PSL flavor? Miller told us to try pumpkin spice coffee - hold the syrup - or add a little pumpkin spice to your coffee grounds before you brew.
