2015's Overalls Got Nothing on This Season's Modern Update

When overalls became "trendy" again last year, we were hesitant to try them out. When we did, we kept it classic and asked our friends about a billion and one times if they looked flattering. Now we're well versed in overalls, wearing them to lounge around the house with lingerie just as often as we do for a night out, styled with heels.

The freshest looks include corduroy dresses, fitted flares in bright colorways, and plenty of distressing. These days, we're treating overalls like jeans. They're easy to slip into, effortless, and ridiculously chic. Read on to see 14 of our favorite takes on the silhouette, then shop a variety of designs to add to your closet.

Get on That Gucci Loafer Flow For a Fraction of the Price

Fall's hottest shoe, at one point, was something you might have wrinkled your nose at. "A fur-lined flat," you thought. "But those, at their very shaggiest, look like Donald Trump's hair." Now the backless flat is practically a wardrobe staple, and Gucci has come up with so many iterations - from styles embroidered with bouquets to sleek leather colorways - that every girl has a favorite pair.

Some designs come with shimmering jacquard fabric; others have a soft lining more comfortable than your everyday slippers, so you'll easily understand the appeal now that it's getting cold out. No matter which loafer you love, it's become easy to get the look for a fraction of the price. Read on to scoop up a Gucci pair or see how you can shop the look the brand popularized at some of your favorite retailers.

Halloween and the Big Kid

"Aren't you a little old to be trick-or-treating?"

Y'all know that thought. Trick-or-treating is something many kids in this nation partake in with their precious costumes and even cuter smiles. They infest our streets and walk up to our doors and we happily hand them candy. Except the big kids. The Big Kids. Those kids that look "too old" to be taking part in an event for the little kids.

Often I read about what age kids stop trick-or-treating. The perspectives vary greatly. And I know I've been one to see a big kid walk up to my door and think: "For real? Aren't you a little old for that? This is for the little kids."

Sigh. This is the part where I have to respectfully request something a little unorthodox.

Please don't ask that. Or think that. Here's why: Not every big kid is an older kid. I happen to know firsthand. You see, my 8-year-old also happens to be 5'2". Yes, you read that right. My 8-year-old is 5 feet and 2 inches tall. She's actually taller than some grown adults. Princess dresses and innocence have long been a thing of her past. Because she's just too tall. So guess what, princess costumes? No way. Not happening for my little one.

I've watched as adults have treated her like a 12-year-old because, you know, she looks like one. And this year, I'm determined to welcome EVERY kid at our door that wants to trick or treat. We spend so much time cherishing their youth that when it passes us by, we almost miss it. For my girl, she just can't wear some costumes fit for her age because she doesn't fit. But her sweet little brain is still 8 years old. She's an 8-year-old little girl and she desperately just wants to be an 8-year-old little girl.

She wants to be little. She wants to be innocent. She wants to have fun.

Those big kids are trying to hold on to the innocent nature of their childhood too. Are they taking candy from the littles? Maybe. However, if that's what it takes to preserve the innocence that social media, the news, the world will eventually take from them, then I have one thing to say.

Give them the candy.

So please, I beg of you, don't judge my "big" kid for trick-or-treating. Because after all, she's still little inside.

Eva Longoria on Her Career: "It's in My Nature to Be in Charge"

Eva Longoria is, without a doubt, one of the hardest working women in Hollywood. With directing gigs, a packed production slate, a fashion line at The Limited, and special projects that leave her stylishly jetting around the world, her career is seriously admirable. And Eva's latest sizzling magazine spread celebrates all her achievements: she's Ocean Drive's November 2016 cover star!

In her interview with the magazine, Eva opened up about important issues like gender equality and the election, but she also took the time to weigh in on things like social media, her fitness routine, and her past. Keep reading for a sneak peek at what she had to say, then admire Eva's best outfits so far this year.

  • On society's gender bias: "There's a reason we haven't had a female president in our history. There is a gender bias in politics, in the workplace, and in the society - and to say there's not is very naïve. I don't have a problem telling people if something's not quite right, or course-correcting - but it has to be done in the right way. I'm cooperative, respectful, and very honest. Just because I'm a boss lady doesn't mean I have to be a b*tch. In my head, I was always a director and producer - it's in my nature to be in charge."
  • On what Hillary Clinton has taught her: "I learned this from Hillary Clinton: Take criticism seriously, but not personally. Whether it's that someone doesn't like a piece of clothing I design, or my acting, or my restaurant, it's important to hear the complaint."
  • On social media: "I'm glad that there was no Twitter or Instagram when Housewives started, for sure. It was definitely a different world back then. Social media can be overwhelming. I don't really have rules for myself - it's just common sense. I have a very private husband, so I don't really post with him, and of course I don't post the kids for security reasons. But I share a lot, and I use it for charity and my clothing line. It's a great tool when used correctly."
  • On her past relationships: "I think every relationship is a path to where you are today. Every wrong turn led you to the spot where you are, so it wasn't necessarily the wrong turn at the time. I wouldn't change anything - never."
  • On how she stays so fit: "There's no secret formula - diet and exercise take work. I've always had a good metabolism, but at some point, everyone's stops. For me, it was at around 35. You eat a bowl of pasta, and you're like, 'Oh, this doesn't just go away anymore.'"

The Ring Thing Lets You Train Like A Pro Gymnast

We were totally fan-girling over the insane gymnastics routines we saw at the 2016 Rio Games this Summer. One category that was seriously lacking in girl power was the Olympic rings event. Currently that category is exclusive to male competitors, but that's not about to stop Hannah Bronfman from using it as inspiration in her workout. In this episode of Hannahgram Hannah tried her hand at the Ring Thing, a gymnastics-ring-inspired rig that uses 50% of your body weight to help you master everything from a muscle up to a swing-handstand.

Ring Thing classes are being offered by Body + Pole in NYC.

So Far, Hailey Baldwin's "Jacket Game" Has Been as Hot as Her Swimwear

Hailey Baldwin may have treated her swimwear like a second skin last Summer, but now that Fall's in full swing, the model has another piece she's rarely spotted without: a jacket. Her collection's quite impressive, too, between all the bombers, leather options, and puffers on rotation, but we can't say we're too shocked to see that this is the case. After all, Hailey did predict her outerwear would rule this season.

"I think my jacket game is going to be really strong this Fall," she told us, when we sat down to chat about her Ugg campaign. "I am just so into that. So we shall see."

Even before things got chilly, Hailey was showing up to events with an extra layer on. Scroll through some looks Hailey completed with a too-cute topper, then shop similar jacket options for yourself.

An Important Reminder to Not Judge People by Their Appearances - Especially at the Gym

An Imgur post about the conflation of gym culture and body shaming is going viral for all the right reasons. The post, shared by a frequent gym attendee, discusses the many ways in which people at the gym make assumptions about others based on their appearances.

The user introduced the post by expressing her own experience with feeling judged. She wrote, "When Chris and I first started working out at the Rec, we were judged hardcore." She added that she was being judged for seeming too confident and wearing a weightlifting belt, which she explained was something she had to wear following a back surgery.

The rest of the poignant story details the way in which people tend to judge or shame other people at the gym despite not knowing them or knowing their history.

The post currently has over 350,000 views. Read the necessary wake-up call in its entirety, below.

Body shaming at the gym

"When Chris & I first started working out at the Rec, we were judged hardcore. Someone even posted on Facebook about the "buff couple" & how they "thought they're hot shit because they wear their belts all the time". This was about two months after my back surgery & I did indeed wear my lifting belt during almost all of my workouts for support.

My point is, everyone gets judged. People don't bother to understand where you're coming from or why you do the things you do.

That overweight guy? Someone judges him because of his weight, but little do they know he's already lost 100 pounds & has changed his entire life around.

That guy with the skinny legs? He's had seven knee surgeries & he's currently trying to strengthen his legs. It's just a long hard process.

That skinny girl you think "really needs to eat"? She's actually super self conscious about her thin figure & has been trying to gain weight, but her metabolism is super high.

That kid who follows you around & watches everything you do? He looks up to you and wants to learn your workouts, he's just scared to approach you.

That girl with really bad form? She had to mentally prepare to enter the weight room because she was terrified of people judging her. She second guesses every exercise, but she's too intimidated to ask anyone for advice.

That buff dude you think is cocky? He grew up in poverty and working out was his alternative to drugs or alcohol. He's not cocky-just focused.

That woman taking too long on the equipment you want? She's a single mom exhausted from working two jobs & raising three kids. She's trying to push herself to finish her workout, but she needs a little extra rest between sets.

That old man doing strange exercises and talking too much? He decided to get a gym membership to stay active & socialize after his wife passed away last year. Talking to you makes his day & has helped his depression.

There's more to people than what you see. Instead of jumping to conclusions or making judgements, take a moment to consider someone else's perspective.

Don't judge a book by its cover."

The Important Parenting Resource You Should Never Ignore

Imagine buying a brand-new appliance. You're so excited, but when you get home and open the box, your excitement quickly turns to confusion: there are five different instruction manuals, and they all say different things. Some of the instructions are similar but worded differently, and some are completely contradictory to the others — so there's absolutely no way of knowing which one is correct. You call your best friend for advice because she has an appliance like yours, but since hers is a slightly different model, you're not sure her advice will work for you. With a sinking feeling you realize that you're just going to have to figure it out on your own.

OK, so that may never happen with an appliance, but it happens with something far more complicated and important: our kids. If you think about it, that's almost exactly what we deal with as parents in the age of information. We are constantly bombarded with parenting advice from books and articles and TV shows and blog posts and pediatricians and child psychologists and sleep experts and nutritionists — some reliable, some questionable. Thanks to the internet, everyone has a platform, "expert" or not. If someone has a nice website and the ability to sound credible, it's hard to tell whether they're a genuinely reputable source or just another person with internet access and an opinion. Is it any wonder we're completely baffled sometimes? It's not our fault we can't make heads or tails of all this mess.

Luckily, we have at our disposal the single most valuable parenting tool — and no, it's not the World Wide Web. It's something far older and much more reliable: our gut instinct, the same one that protected our ancestors from being eaten by prehistoric bears and led them to find food and shelter for their families. It is literally one of the biggest reasons why humanity has existed for so long. But despite all that, we don't trust it nearly as often as we should, just because great-aunt Mabel or our neighbor's pediatrician or some schmo with a keyboard (and yes, I appreciate the irony here) have fed us tidbits of conflicting information. Deep down, we feel like we ought to know what to do, but we're drowning in a deluge of well-meaning advice that often makes us second-guess ourselves.

I'll never forget the time my son, then 2 years old, kept whining uncomfortably any time someone would touch his arm. Putting on his jacket, buckling him into his car seat, giving him a bath — all those scenarios would result in him acting as though he was sore. But he didn't raise a huge fuss, nothing looked abnormal, and I didn't recall him injuring himself, so I dismissed my concerns for a couple of days, hoping that whatever it was would resolve itself quickly. After all, I didn't want to be "that mom" who rushes her kid to the doctor for every tiny snort and sniffle. Still, his reaction kept nagging at me, so I finally relented and took him to see the pediatrician.

When we got to the appointment and she examined him, he didn't flinch. The same child who had been griping about his arm for days now sat in the doctor's office as stoic and nonchalant as can be. Not so much as a grimace or a wince as she gently pulled, bent, and flexed the offending appendage. "Great," I thought. "She's going to think I'm completely overreacting."

Apparently, though, the doctor was much better at trusting her instincts than I was, because she recommended an x-ray "to be safe." And as it turns out, my poor baby had been walking around for half a week with a broken wrist. I felt like the worst mom in the world; had I listened to my inner guidance to begin with, he would never have had to go through as much pain as he did. But though it unfortunately came at his expense, it taught me a very important lesson. When your instinct speaks, you listen.

I promise, you know more than you think you do — even when you've never done this before. Nobody knows your child the way you do. Nobody else spends as much time, or invests as much of themselves, in your child. No one else is as much of an expert at predicting how your quirky, unique little individual will react to something. Will you make a few mistakes along the way? Sure; parenting is nothing if not trial-and-error. But a few minor missteps aren't going to screw anyone up for life. The biggest disservice to your child would be not heeding the advice of the one person who knows more about him or her than anyone else: yourself.

So go forth with confidence, mamas. Take a deep breath and do what feels right. Don't worry about that article you read on the internet; dig deep enough, and you're bound to find some sort of study contradicting it anyway. In the grand scheme of things, your intuition will never steer you wrong. Listen to what others have to say — after all, these days it's hard not to — but in the end, the best decisions are the ones you already know deep down.

8 Brunette-Friendly Rainbow Hair Colors That Are Perfect For Cooler Weather

When I first covered rainbow hair in the Summer of 2014, I was spotlighting a select few women who were bold enough to rock unexpected colorful coifs in everyday life. Since then, the style has evolved to become a universally beloved look. Whether you're walking through the streets of New York City or Hong Kong, you'll see dozens of varied manes, including rose gold hair, amethyst strands, or denim dye jobs.

Equally apparent as these vibrant heads of hair is that the rainbow trend is especially popular among blondes (both natural and bleached). This is because light strands are an excellent foundation for electric dye . . . the color just pops on top. As a brunette, I felt jealous of this advantageous hair color and bemoaned my darker 'do. That is, until colorist and Brush In Hand owner Hannah Edelman created the now-viral chocolate mauve trend, which incorporated the client's naturally brunette roots.

According to Edelman, almost all hair needs to be prelightened for rainbow.

"I ask my clients to imagine they have a half white, half dark brown piece of paper in front of them," said Edelman. "If they painted a pink line with watercolor paint across both halves, where would they see the color? Only on the white paper. Semipermanent hair color is the same: completely translucent." She added, "You cannot get around the fact the hair needs to be lightened."

In the world of hair dye, there is a color wheel that assigns numbers to (natural) hair colors, starting with one — black — and ending with platinum 10. To tint their strands with rainbow shades, brunettes need to lift their natural color to a minimum of a level six on the hair color wheel (which is the darkest shade of blond you can be without being a light brunette).

That said, if you are wary about making the plunge and fully committing to platinum blond, you can make the process easier on yourself and your hair. Try an ombré balayage style, which will fade nicely into a standard blond and require much less upkeep than a completely bleached foundation.

The rainbow hue you select will also indicate how much you should lighten your hair. "Blues and violets should have a level eight or nine base," said Edelman. (These are pale blonds.) "For reds, oranges, and yellows, and greens, hair needs to be lifted to a level seven or eight," but she acknowledged that red will be visible (albeit less powerful) on a level six blond. Those who feel passionate about achieving pastel hair should know that you must bleach your hair all the way to a "level 10 with minimal warmth" (white blond).

Now that you're likely feeling more intrigued about pursuing colorful hair, we have good news. Edelman has divulged her favorite Fall/Winter rainbow styles that cater best to brunettes. Should you be convinced that you won't be able to pull off your top pick with your complexion, don't be: your skin tone should not be the ultimate deciding factor.

"Vivids are already breaking the rules," she said. "You can rock anything as long as you're sassy." So whether you're in search of a more subtle style or a vivid rainbow look, you'll find some serious inspiration when you read on.

Bad News: The New MacBook Pro Requires Yet Another Dongle

There are some very cool things about the new MacBook Pros, but this isn't one of them. This is because the new MacBook Pro has USB-C and Thunderbolt ports instead of Magsafe, HDMI, and USB type A ports. Did you happen to look up at the night sky this past weekend? If you did, you were lucky enough to catch the hunter's supermoon, a full moon that illuminated the night sky and left sky gazers astonished.

This month's full moon was both a supermoon and a hunter's moon, an event that occurs in the Fall. Typically, the moon rises 50 minutes later each day. But a hunter's moon signifies that the "October moon rises 30 minutes later" instead, reports National Geographic. If you don't know, a supermoon happens when the full moon "is closer to Earth than average," according to NASA. The combination of these two events meant people saw a moon that looked larger than usual as it lit up the sky earlier in the night.

If you're sad you missed this supermoon, you can catch the next two in November and December. The Nov. 14 supermoon is both the closest full moon of 2016 and the first one of its kind in the 21st century, which we won't see again till Nov. 25, 2034. The supermoon in December will occur on the 14th, and sadly, it means you won't be able to see the Geminid meteor shower.

To see what the hunter's supermoon looked like, check out the incredible photos ahead from around the world, and mark your calendars now for the next two supermoons. All it takes is peeking out your window the night of to catch a fun and amazing astronomical treat.

1 Eyebrow, 3 Ways Transformed Completed Just Using Makeup

When it comes to grooming your eyebrows, you've probably already tried to tweeze, pluck, or thread them to perfection. However, whether you groom your brows or not, your arches can ultimately change your entire look when altered (even if it's just a smidge). Certain brow shapes have the ability to balance out your features; some can give your face an ultra-lifted appearance, while others can make you look more youthful - making brows, clearly, your most transformative feature.

Luckily, no matter what outcome you're looking to achieve when shaping your brows, there's no need to reach for tweezers to do it. We've rounded up the best makeup artist-approved tricks to create three very different brow shapes that you can DIY at home - no plucking necessary.

Some Schools Are Canceling Classes On Election Day Due to Safety Fears

With all of the chaos that this year's presidential election has brought to the country, some schools are fearing the worst on Election Day and have gone so far as to cancel classes on Nov. 8. While public schools have always been used as polling places in the past, some parents and law officials have raised concerns about having children in school on this day, even if the voting is not taking place there. According to the National School Boards Association, it's currently unknown how many schools will be closed on Election Day, but in districts across the country, classes have been cancelled or polling places have been moved from schools to other buildings in local areas. Erin Gadd, a district spokeswoman from Lorain, OH, said, "Emotions are running high during this presidential election" and that her district made the decision to cancel classes back in August.

"There's going to be a lot of people coming in and out of the buildings throughout the day as they show up to vote," said Jeff Graham, the Lorain schools superintendent. "We want to ensure a smooth experience for everyone concerned. We felt it would be best for our students and community."

With a growing fear of violence across the country, district officials are making the decision to keep kids out of school for preventative measures.

UK Toys R Us Stores Plan Autism-Friendly Quiet Shopping Hour For Families

Shopping during the holidays is sensory overload for everyone, but for children on the autism spectrum, it's a particularly daunting task. The signs, the music, the announcements, the Santas running around - it's enough to make anyone run for cover, particularly those with sensory issues. To create a more comfortable shopping experience for families facing these issues, Toys R Us stores across the United Kingdom will offer a "quiet hour" on Nov. 6. The morning shopping hour will feature more dimly lit, music-free aisles and no announcements over the loud speakers. Management will also designate quiet zones for families and place autism-friendly signage throughout the stores.

Toys R Us Marketing Director Mike Coogan told The Telegraph, "Holding such events has given our teams extreme pride in reaching out to autism groups within the community. Making slight adjustments to stores and creating a quiet shopping period allows children and young adults to experience the fun in a toy shop, regardless of their disability."

It's an experience that more and more stores and kid-friendly attractions are trying to create for children on the spectrum. Earlier this month, an Australian zoo opened its doors early for guests with autism so they and their families could avoid heavy crowds and loud noises while enjoying the exhibits. And over the Summer, a ShopRite store in Philadelphia converted one of its checkout aisles into a sensory-friendly lane. The store manager swapped sugary candy and snacks for items like crayons, stress balls, toys, and wet wipes after a little girl had a particularly upsetting meltdown in a traditional checkout line.

We can only hope that more child-friendly locations adopt such programs in an effort to make all of their customers feel more comfortable.

This Bride Wore So Many Dresses at Her Indian-American Wedding, It's Hard to Keep Track

When your buddies NAS and Jay Sean perform at your wedding, you know you can expect a good playlist. But stylish party outfits? Well, that was up to the bride, Hayley Murthy, to master. Hayley and Dee held a gorgeous ceremony at Bacara Resort & Spa, gathering all their friends for the occasion. But that was after the pair headed to India for their engagement party, where Hayley slipped into a beautiful blue embroidered gown. Later, she celebrated her bachelorette in a white monogrammed swimsuit, and finally, it was time for her to pull out the rest of her bridal looks.

Hayley walked down the aisle in a voluminous Monique Lhuillier gown that would make any girl weak at the knees, but she brought along plenty of minidresses too, along with one asymmetrical long-sleeved sheath perfect for a formal rehearsal dinner. Right before the final reception, Hayley joined the groom's family for Hindu traditions where bundles of flowers were thrown over her sparkling Sabyasachi Couture creation. Read on to feast your eyes over every ensemble she wore during the memorable weekend.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Had a Fashion Moment Every Couple Could Relate To

While Angelina Jolie is one of the most stylish women on the red carpet, that doesn't mean all the characters she plays are up to par. But in her self-directed film, By the Sea, Angelina took on the role of Vanessa, an unbelievably chic woman living in France during the '70s. One fashion item she's always got on hand? A pair of oversize sunglasses.

The importance of the accessory is outlined in Angelina's Nov. 2015 cover feature for WSJ Magazine:

Jolie was equally painstaking about By the Sea's 1970s period wardrobe - including her oversize sunglasses, which [Brad] Pitt's character, Roland, keeps righting for his wife after she tosses them, a lot, onto tables, a mini pas de deux Jolie took from their former marriage. 'Brad hates that I always scratch my glasses,' she said, adding that in the film, the gesture shows that Roland still cares for her character, Vanessa. 'Even when he wants to punch her in the face, he still fixes her glasses!'"

While Angelina and Brad didn't suffer the same troubles as their characters, we love the poetic license Angelina took, turning a simple couple's quirk into a weighty symbol for her movie. Whether you're watching Angelina on screen or on the street, there's no denying the lady looks good in her shades, from aviators to a fierce cat-eye silhouette. The Best Way To 'Discipline Without Damage,' From Toddlers To Teens

Our friends at Fatherly break down the keys to understanding your children and targeting their behavioral patterns for effective discipline.

Crib Notes summarize all the parenting books you'd read if you weren't too busy parenting. For great advice in chunks so small a toddler wouldn't choke them, go here.

Have you given up on time-outs, behavior charts, and reward schemes to control your children's behavior? Did you find all of them to be coercive, gimmicky, and incongruous with your kid's development? Or did you just think, "Wow, this is a time-consuming pain in the ass"?

In Discipline Without Damage: How to Get Your Kids to Behave Without Messing Them Up, Dr. Vanessa Lapointe gives you permission to replace all of those parenting techniques with something a little more touchy-feely. And since nobody has time to feel all the feels about their kid's behavior, it's been distilled to its essence, bottled, and delivered to you so you can discreetly enjoy it anywhere. (Just remember to cover it with a paper bag.)

1. Children Have Needs

Lapointe, spends much of the book trying to convince the reader that children are not little adults who are fully in control of their own actions and emotions. The scientific term for that is, "No shit."

These children, she posits, have needs. She wants you to focus less on your kid's behavior and more on your own. Do you meet their emotional needs? Do you use imagination, patience, and compassion to create connection and trust with them, and be the special big people (that's what she calls parents or guardians: "SBPs") they need? She also wants you to know this is all based on science - a claim she supports with a liberal smattering of footnotes.

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS

Basically, you should use your emotional connection to your kids to figure out what's causing problematic behaviors and work with them to solve those problem. If you're having trouble breaking free of traditional attitudes toward disciple, she suggests …

  • Rather than focusing on order, focus on "making room for childhood to unfold."
  • "Find ways to let yourself relax" even amidst the chaos of childhood.
  • "Ignore the standards of the world" and focus on what your children need. That would be, in no particular order: You, your compassion, your presence, your understanding, to feel them, and to protect them.

2. It's Just a Phase (Seriously)

Trying to be the law and order parent (which is different from Chris Meloni, who is a Law & Order parent) often means fighting against the natural stages of your kid's psychological and emotional development. When that happens, there's a lot of law, but usually no order. Accept where your kids are on the emotional growth chart. You have demands and their brains might not yet have the capacity to meet them. You monster.

  • 2-to-3-year-olds: Impulse control is impossible, and meltdowns, screaming, and tantrums are normal. They have little individuation and see themselves in terms of being "created by their big people." They have newfound independence (i.e., they say "no" a lot).
  • 3-to-4-year-olds: The ability to regulate their frustration and upset increases, but they still need a lot of help doing so from their SBPs. They're into testing limits and exploring; more into their own preferences and wants. They can be aggressive, but increased verbal ability should mitigate this.
  • 5-to-7-year-olds: Getting more independent; they see themselves as not just a creation of their parents. Getting better at regulating themselves, but will still occasionally melt down. They can hold 2 or more seemingly contradictory thoughts in mind at the same time. It helps with problem solving ("I want that ball, but I will have to jack up little Tommy to get it - and I don't want to get in trouble").
  • 8-to-10-year-olds: They have their own sense of style, passions, interests, and terrible taste in music. They overstep boundaries and need "supervision or guidance around that." They're able to regulate but still prone to occasional outbursts or meltdowns.
  • 11-to-12-year-olds: They have strong opinions and want to take stands and push boundaries. They love to "discuss" things - like their opinions about the rules. Their urge to individuate through ill-considered self-expression may seem like purposeful rebelliousness. Like a navel ring.
  • 13-to-17-year-olds: Like 11-12 year olds, but moodier, more door-slammy. Despite their adult appearances and claims of adulthood, they are still kids and still need their SBPs.

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS

3. How Damage-Free Discipline Works On The Ground

If your knee-jerk reactions and frustration isn't working, you could do worse than to try this approach. You can also get more advice in this vein from Dr. Laura Markham, who preaches a similar "do no harm," gospel of dealing with kids who are just acting their age.

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS

  • Respond With Connection: When a child is acting out, instead of focusing on the behavior, focus on the child's feelings. Key phrases to use: "You look like you are having a hard time," "I will help you. Come with me and we will figure this out."
  • Stay Low: The more upset the kid is, the calmer you need to be - but simultaneously exude confidence and concern.
  • Drop A Flag: Instead of dressing down a kid while they're acting out or just wound up, in a calm and nurturing tone, give a brief (5-word max) reminder of what he needs to know at the moment. Save the conversation for a calmer time. Examples of verbal flags: "Gentle hands." "Kind words." "That must stop." Or one that isn't in the book, "Put down the knife"
  • Maintain Firmness With Kindness: Use a "no/I know" approach. For example: "No, you can't give the cat a haircut/I know you're disappointed."
  • Give No Explanation: At least not to a kid in the throes of a meltdown. Maintain the boundary and save the chit-chat about why until they're settled.
  • Debrief Once The Dust Settles: Once the kid has accepted the boundary you have established or enforced, calm has prevailed, and you are in a state of alignment (even if it's a week later), remind them of the incident and its positive resolution. Give them reassurances that you will continue to be there to keep them safe, and subtly draw attention to your connectedness. Resist the urge to chant "S-B-P Rules!"

How 1 Group of Nurses Made Halloween Extra Special For 35 NICU Babies and Their Families

Just because these newborns are celebrating their first Halloween in the neonatal intensive care unit doesn't mean that they have to miss out on any of the fun.

Instead of letting the holiday pass by, a group of nurses and March of Dimes volunteers at St. Luke Hospital in Kansas City, MO, decided to get crafty. They brought the holiday spirit to these precious tots and their parents by designing tiny costumes fitting for these little superheroes and fighters.

"Families in our NICU may spend weeks or months here, and it can be an emotional time," hospital spokeswoman Michelle Manuel told POPSUGAR. "Providing an opportunity for them to celebrate Halloween with their little ones allows them a sense of normalcy and to celebrate their baby's first milestones, which is what every family wants to do."

From Batman to a butterfly, parents picked costumes to match their little ones' personalities and the volunteers handmade 35 miniature ensembles. Along with professional photos of their newborn's first Halloween costume, parents were also given a "Trick or Treat, smell my feet card" complete with their infant's footprints and a Halloween book to read together as well as a handmade crocheted pumpkin.

Emmalee Schaumburg, one of the three photographers who all happen to be moms of former NICU babies and who volunteered their services to capture these special costumes, understands the importance of photographing these moments even when they occur during a hospital stay. "Now that [my daughter is] 2 and a half, I am so glad I can go back and look at those pictures and see how far she's come," Emmalee told CNN. "It's so important to remember how far these babies have come."
