Here's What I Regret From My First Year of Motherhood

My baby is going to reach a big milestone this week – her first birthday. That means that she'll no longer be classified as an infant . . . and that I am going to have to give up my title as a "new mom," a description that's given me more comfort than I ever could have expected. Whenever I was unsure, whenever I second-guessed a decision, I reminded myself that I was still a new mom, learning as I went. Now, after a solid year on duty, I am ready to meet my own developmental milestone, but not without a few regrets about my first year as a parent.

Whoa, This Harry Potter Theory Will Change Your Entire Perspective on Slytherins

Few people admit to liking Salazar Slytherin, but that might change with a new theory floating around.

In the Harry Potter series, Salazar Slytherin is portrayed as one of the Hogwarts founders who was extremely anti-muggleborns. But Tumblr user maglet-301 challenges that by pointing out a section in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that states how he wanted to build Hogwarts away from anyone who might compromise the safety of it. See below.

http://ift.tt/1LK9Ex4

It doesn't end there. Tumblr user datvikingtho then chimed in with a comment that explained Slytherin was most likely wary of muggleborns because Hogwarts was founded during an era of witch-hunts. The other founders were also concerned but had their own reasons as to why they wanted muggleborns. For example, as datvikingtho explains, Ravenclaw wanted to bring both purebloods and muggleborns together to share magic with more people. But Slytherin, rightfully so, was afraid to follow suit. He didn't necessarily want to risk the lives of anyone by inviting someone who might be a potential spy or something worse.

Then it gets even crazier. The same user also delves into why the Chamber of Secrets was created. He or she thinks it was formed by Slytherin to protect students in case there was an attack. The basilisk could then easily get rid of whoever was trying to hurt the students.

Read the entire theory below. The origins of these two posts date back to nine months ago, but a Reddit thread is finally helping others see this new side of Slytherin. It might actually change the way you completely think about everyone from Slytherin house.

Vanessa Hudgens's Updo Looks Like a Basic Topknot - Until She Turns Around

Vanessa Hudgens attended the 2016 Elle Women in Hollywood event rocking our dream rehearsal-dinner look: a tiered white lace dress with an effortlessly cool topknot. The bun had all of the cool-girl elements: wisps around her face and texture. But what made it so standout was that there were three braids going up the back to lead into the twist.

Celebrity stylist Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One salon in LA created the look. She broke it down: "First section out all the hair in front of the ear out of the way. Used a little R+Co Tinsel Smoothing Oil on the hair that was left out to give it some shine and created three inverted French braids starting from her nape and moving your way up towards the top of her head. Tie them with an elastic to keep them in place. Grab all remaining hair and combine it into a pony tail. Use a little Unite Texturiza Spray on the pony tail, section into two and lightly back comb to give it some texture. Twist and pin those two sections to form a messy bun. To get a more effortless look gently pull out some strand by the hairline. Locked the style into place with R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Hairspray."

The Hoodie You Never Knew You Needed - 1 With a Pet Pocket

How often do you sit down to do something and your favorite furry friend crawls up into your lap and falls fast asleep? It's probably often, but the worst part is when you have to get up to do something and the thought of waking your little furball breaks your heart a little bit. That adorable little face . . . who wants to wake that? But the Japanese company Unihabitat has a solution for that problem: the Mewgaroo hoodie with a pocket for your cat or dog (or whatever other small animal you might have). The hoodie, currently only available in gray, has a removable liner for the pocket for easy washing, and the ladies' style features cat ears on the hood. The hood strings are also extralong to serve as a toy for your furry friend while she's in the pocket, and the shirtsleeves are made to look like paws.

A Guide For Detoxing After Halloween

Even the healthiest among us can't help but get into the Halloween fun, and while everything's good in moderation, sometimes a night of temptation means going overboard (no regrets!). Whether you've snacked on trick-or-treating purchases too much or know you have a big weekend ahead, here are some ideas to detox when you're ready to get back on track.

  1. Drink more water: Make water consumption a priority the day after your Halloween festivities; not only will it help flush out all those indulgent decisions (that is, it'll help your hangover), but it'll give you more energy to tackle the day.
  2. Break the sugar addiction: Eating a lot of sugar will only make you crave it more, so your night of fun-sized celebration may be leading to mindless reaching for your candy stash the rest of the week. Ready for a challenge? If you're craving sweets, take celebrity trainer Jackie Warner's advice: take five days to wean yourself off sugar and refined carbs by eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies instead. If forgoing sugar altogether seems impossible (especially in light of leftover holiday treats), check out our tips for reducing your sugar cravings.
  3. Fight fatigue: Whether you hosted a Halloween party or spent an exhausting couple of hours corralling trick-or-treaters, the holiday can eat into your sleep time. To make sure you don't feel tired all day, fill your diet with these fatigue-fighting foods, and make a point to go to sleep early tonight - you may benefit from recovery sleep so you don't feel overly tired for the rest of the week.
  4. Eat nourishing foods: You've had enough of the processed stuff - now it's time to eat real food. Start with a nutrient-packed smoothie, go for a kale salad for lunch, and a spicy carrot detox ginger soup for dinner. Eating a produce-rich meal plan will help your body crave the good instead of all the bad.
  5. Move more: Get your metabolism going - and sweat out all the bad stuff - with an intense workout; if you can't bear the thought of exercise, go for a walk or do a few of these detoxifying yoga poses to get things moving.

Miley Cyrus Says Her Engagement Ring Doesn't Go With the Rest of Her Jewelry, but These Pics Prove Otherwise

Miley Cyrus is finally speaking out about the piece of jewelry she pairs with all her outfits: the round, gold-band engagement ring that Liam Hemsworth gave her. When the singer stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she came clean about the sparkler, revealing that, actually, it isn't exactly her style.

"This is really weird because this is like real jewelry and most of my jewelry is made out of gummy bears and cotton candy," she said, claiming that the ring doesn't go with her quirkier pieces, but that she wears it "because [he loves] me."

Well, sorry Miley — we beg to differ. You've made the ring work with even your kookiest looks, as evident by the photos ahead. Scroll through to see how Miley's made the stunning piece all her own, then listen to her talk about her ring in the interview.

A 1-Handed Keyboard Exists on the iPhone - Except It's Hidden

Typing on the iPhone keyboard can be a real struggle sometimes, especially if your other hand is holding something else. It's why during every iOS update, people hope that Apple will finally do something about it. Turns out the company did create a secret one-handed keyboard, except you can't use it.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith tweeted a photo of what the one-handed keyboard looks like on Oct. 19. He stated that the keyboard has existed since iOS 8, except you can only access it if you jailbreak your iPhone. The keyboard's existence makes sense considering iOS 8 came out when the bigger iPhone 6 Plus was released, making it harder to type on the iPhone with one hand. Take a look at Troughton-Smith's tweet.

If you don't want to jailbreak your iPhone, there is another way to achieve a similar effect. Several keyboard apps, like Gboard from Google, will let you swipe to type, which helps a lot if you have a bigger iPhone like 6, 6S, or 7 Plus.

4 Stupid Things First-Time Parents Do When Expecting

Now that my kids are 2 and almost 5 (and I've been writing about motherhood for most of their young lives), I'd like to think I've learned a thing or two about parenting babies. But back in 2011, when I was about to give birth to my daughter, I was as clueless as every other first-time mom. Despite the numerous parenting books that lined my nightstand and the hours I spent researching every newborn-related thing I could think of on BabyCenter, I had no idea what kind of crazy, life-changing experience was coming my way - and how stupid some of the first parenting decisions I made truly were.

Recently, I attended a baby shower for one of my younger friends, and I was surrounded by pregnant women, glowing with the anticipation of their first child's arrival and a blissful lack of understanding about what they were really getting themselves into. I didn't want to burst their baby-joy bubbles by telling them they didn't really need the wipes warmer or every available stroller attachment, but maybe I should have. While no one can really prepare you for your first baby, let me share a few dumb things I did, so you don't have to repeat my mistakes.

  1. Buying every possible baby item and gadget made. Like many first-time moms, I was convinced I needed everything those online registry lists suggested, including multiple strollers, a bouncer, a swing, a bassinet, a crib, a wipes warmer, a bottle warmer, a million swaddles and sleep sacks, and, of course, a couple of pairs of baby skinny jeans, size 0-3 months. My daughter hated the bouncer and swing, I never used those warmers, and the skinny jeans? The poor girl couldn't bend her chunky legs in them. Now I would tell my former self to buy the bare minimum. One safe place to put the baby down is ample. Trendy gadgets probably aren't necessary. And remember, Amazon and Diapers.com deliver just as fast after the baby's born as they do before, and you'll know much better what you really need once you and your baby get to know each other.
  2. Getting too attached to my birth plan. I never wrote out a birth plan, but I was adamant about not wanting a C-section. So after 16 hours of labor, when my doctor told me I'd only progressed to six centimeters and it was time to consider one, I freaked out. I was pumped full of drugs, beyond exhausted, and totally emotionally unstable, basically the worst combination to process what felt like such a big loss. Now, two C-sections later, I've been known to sing their praises to whomever will listen (I was lucky and had two really easy recoveries). In retrospect, I wish I would have gone into my first labor with a more open mind about the delivery. The goal, after all, is to have a healthy baby; don't let how he or she arrives ruin your experience.
  3. Not setting boundaries for hospital and home visitors after the birth. Besides asking my mom to stay for the a week after my daughter was born, I never even thought about this one. But after a long, rough delivery, I realized that recovering from major surgery and becoming a mom was overwhelming enough, and the addition of having to make small talk with relatives or worrying about whether I'd need to breastfeed while my father-in-law was in the room was too much for me. Even if you're a person who usually loves being surrounded by people, consider setting some limits for the number of visitors who come to the hospital and your home for the first few weeks and definitely set a time limit for each visit. Also remember that it's not your job to serve anyone or make sure your house is clean. An appropriate response to a visitor request: "We'd love to see you from 12-2 on Thursday, and it would be great if you could bring lunch."
  4. Thinking I'd seamlessly jump back into my old life after my baby was born. After gaining 45 pounds with my daughter, I vividly remember telling my husband I was planning on losing the weight through breastfeeding, hot yoga, and juice cleanses (I'd been doing a lot of the last two before I got pregnant). Then my daughter was born, and I quickly realized I was one of those oh-so-lucky women whose bodies hold on to the last 5-10 pounds during the year-plus I was breastfeeding; that my hot yoga gym had no childcare, making it almost impossible to make a class; and my favorite juice cleanse had a big disclaimer that said "not recommended while breastfeeding" - nd those were just a few of the least shocking discoveries I made as a new mom. This isn't one you can really prepare for, but maybe don't sign up for a year-long Bikram membership that starts on your due date or plan to attend your girlfriend's bachelorette party when your baby's six weeks old. Things will change after you become a mom, and you won't know what, how, or why until after delivery.

Pregnancy and Public Transportation: What It's Really Like

When you're pregnant and rely on public transportation on a regular basis (in my case, a commuter train and subway), each day begins as its very own social experiment. Will you or won't you be offered a seat by a well-meaning stranger? Will you or won't you be elbowed/shoved/cut off by a harried fellow commuter? Will your day start with a firsthand reminder that the world is full of good people, or will it send you scowling to your office, wishing that strangers on foot came with ID numbers so that you could report the jerk who took the last seat on the subway?

After a pregnancy and a half of utilizing NYC's mass transit system, I haven't come to any startling conclusions about humanity or what the city is doing right or wrong. What I have learned, however, is this:

  1. Be comfortable with speaking up to get what you want. There are a couple of really good reasons that your fellow commuters aren't leaping out of their seats for you. First off, there's the golden rule that everyone from 20-somethings to grandparents knows (or should know): never assume that a woman is pregnant. This is particularly true in Winter; when your frame is hidden under a bulky coat and gear, it's not easy to differentiate the expectant woman from the one who's just added an extra layer. Secondly, people going about their daily business aren't necessarily aware and alert of every new person to enter the bus or train. Whether engrossed in an email or newspaper, they're probably not actively searching for random acts of kindness to complete during rush hour but would more than likely be happy to help you out. Just say, "Excuse me, I'm pregnant, any chance you'd mind if I took this seat?" You'll very rarely be let down.
  2. You never know what others are dealing with. While it's easy to tell if a person is elderly, using crutches, or wearing a cast, there are plenty of other physical ailments that aren't so obvious. If you're feeling great, wearing comfortable shoes, and not traveling too far, don't stress about scoring a seat. I loved this piece from The New York Times's Metropolitan Diary about the friendliest "standoff" ever between a pregnant woman and a man with a cane.
  3. Your own peers may be the least sympathetic passengers. I have no idea what this is all about, but women in their 20s and 30s, as a whole, tend to be the last to offer up their seats or even acknowledge a pregnant person. Presumably, they haven't yet been in your position themselves, but still . . . what happened to girl power?!
  4. And those who you least expect it from may be the kindest. That tough-looking guy with the oversize headphones? He's likely to be your most surprising ally on the train. I had the extremely odd experience of a stranger who I'd steer clear of if I encountered him on a deserted street at night offering for me to hold onto his jacket when no pole, handle, or seat was available. I declined, but after I processed the weirdness of the whole thing, I realized that he was just offering what he could.
  5. Come prepared for the worst-case scenario. As the laws of karma would have it, on the days when you're wearing sneakers and are empty-handed, you'll have your pick of seats on a quiet train. The one time all month you wear heels and tote your laptop into the office? You'll deal with subway delays, and no one in the vicinity will be feeling charitable. Do your best to travel light, wear clothes that you're comfortable in (and a coat that's easy to unbutton/zip, it can get hot on those stuffy trains), and always bring a bottle of water with you.

Fellow pregnant commuters, what's your experience been like? Did I miss anything?

What Happened After I Gave Up Gluten For 10 Years? It's Not What You Think

At age 13, I made the connection that chicken nuggets were made from actual chickens and became a vegetarian on the spot. I was also insanely picky, so pasta, bagels, and pizza were my main staples. Sadly, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains hardly made it onto my plate, especially when I went off to college. Going vegan wasn't a big jump, since meat was already out of the picture, and I found giving up dairy eased my ongoing digestive issues. I still wasn't 100 percent though, until the day I gave up gluten.

No lie, the first day I passed on gluten, I felt instantly better. Without all those crackers, cereal, and bowls of pasta weighing down my digestive tract, my belly felt more at ease. Since I was new to the whole gluten-free scene, I ate foods I knew were gluten-free like fruits and veggies. So for the first few weeks, I had no bloating, no gas, no constipation. I felt like a new me, which almost made it easy to give up on all my favorite foods.

But after the first two weeks, I was so, so sad — I didn't realize I was obsessed with gluten until I had to give it up. I found myself daydreaming about stealing muffins from the bakery and swimming in bowls of Honey Nut Cheerios. I became completely focused and utterly upset over all the foods I couldn't have. I mourned for all the times I was hanging with friends and couldn't sling back a beer, grab a slice of pizza, or enjoy someone's adorable birthday cupcakes. It seems silly to get depressed over missing out on Gramma's baked ziti, but it was very real for me.

Before spiraling into a deep, dark, gluten-free hole, I took my first trip to the health food store and discovered all the gluten-free alternatives to my fave foods. I bought it all and ate it all. I even bought foods I never ate like gluten-free waffles and mini pecan pies, just because I could eat them. These foods uplifted my spirit tremendously, but big shocker here — my stomach once again waged war. And to make matters worse, after two months of eating this way, I found my need for elastic waistbands increasing. Isn't going gluten-free supposed to help with weight loss? Uh, not if you eat gluten-free junk food full of empty calories.

I realized I needed to cut back on all the gluten-free crap if I ever wanted to fit into my jeans again — a woman cannot live on French fries and gluten-free cookies alone! It forced me to really take a look at my diet, and I slowly started eating fewer gluten-free alternatives and more actual food. I began branching out, enjoying such a huge variety of healthy foods that I started feeling as good as I did those first couple of gluten-free weeks. And it wasn't because I wasn't eating gluten — it was because I was eating real food and less processed junk.

After 10 years of living without gluten and eating a superhealthy diet, I felt amazing. My new boyfriend at the time (my now-husband) suggested I try eating gluten, just to see if my body had changed. The thought had never crossed my mind, but love makes you do crazy things. On an apple-picking trip in the Fall of 2005, a freshly baked cider doughnut was calling my name. That's me in the photo above, taking my first magical bite, and I couldn't believe it, but I felt totally fine. No tummy issues whatsoever. Even after going back to whole-grain bread, crackers, and pasta — gluten didn't bother me anymore. It took me 10 years to realize this, but gluten wasn't my enemy. This might be TMI, but constipation caused by a crappy diet was. Giving up gluten forced me to get out of the habit of eating bread 24/7, to start branching out to eating more nutritious foods, and to get more fiber into my diet. Now I'm able to enjoy gluten without going overboard, and because my vegetarian and dairy-free diet is so much healthier than it was 10 years ago, I'm also able to maintain a healthy weight. Hooray for gluten! And hooray for whole foods!

This Math Problem Will Make You Question Everything You Ever Knew About Algebra

Math isn't everyone's best skill — and even those who are good at it are questioning everything after trying this algebra problem.

The question originally went viral in Japan, after a study discovered that only 60 percent of 20-somethings could actually solve it. Are you already feeling frustrated and hopeless at trying to know what the answer is? Watch the video below, posted by YouTube user MindYourDecisions, a popular math puzzle channel. In it, Presh Talwalkar, the mastermind behind this question, will guide you to the right answer.

As you can see, not even a calculator can help you, as it will read the problem wrong and arrive at the answer of 9. To solve it correctly in a calculator, you need to write it out like this: 9-3/(1/3) + 1, which will lead you to 1 as the correct answer. The problem tests your knowledge of PEMDAS, the order of operations formula, which says you must get to the answer by following these steps in this order: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. In this question, that means dividing 3 by the 1/3 first, which is the same as 3x3. That will then lead you to 9-9+1. From there, 9-9=0 + 1 = 1. Ta-da!

If you arrived at 3, 7, or 9 as your answer, you're not alone. Most people have forgotten how to use PEMDAS or interpret the fraction of 1/3 the wrong way. Still not feeling much of a challenge? Try this other math question that not even parents could solve.

This Remake of Bomba Estéreo's "Soy Yo" Music Video Will Convince You to Vote

Sarai Gonzalez is back with a new version of Bomba Estéreo's "Soy Yo" music video and this time she's using her attitude and busting out some cool dance moves to school another bully by getting you out to vote on Nov. 8. In a new promo for People For the American Way, Sarai rallies Latinos in her neighborhood and guides them to the polls after watching a snippet of Donald Trump at the last presidential debate.

In a press release, Sarai, who became a viral star after appearing in the now iconic music video, said: "I was excited to do this video because this election is so important. I've had enough of Donald Trump. He's unkind and he's dishonest. Even all the kids in my school know how racist he is and that he can't be president. He would make America much worse, not better. That's why everyone needs to vote." Press play above to see how she's helping to make that happen.

Why You Should Stop Believing Any Facebook Post That Guarantees Your Privacy

It feels like every year, another viral post goes around on Facebook warning users that everything is going public and that somehow you can stop it from happening. This time around, the post explains that all your private photos, messages, and more are about to become public, unless you post a disclaimer that says otherwise.

The post reads as follows:

"Deadline tomorrow !!! Everything you've ever posted becomes public from tomorrow. Even messages that have been deleted or the photos not allowed. It costs nothing for a simple copy and paste, better safe than sorry. Channel 13 News talked about the change in Facebook's privacy policy. I do not give Facebook or any entities associated with Facebook permission to use my pictures, information, messages or posts, both past and future. With this statement, I give notice to Facebook it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, distribute, or take any other action against me based on this profile and/or its contents. The content of this profile is private and confidential information. The violation of privacy can be punished by law (UCC 1-308- 1 1 308-103 and the Rome Statute). NOTE: Facebook is now a public entity. All members must post a note like this. If you prefer, you can copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once it will be tactically allowing the use of your photos, as well as the information contained in the profile status updates. DO NOT SHARE. Copy and paste."

However, none of this is true. Facebook isn't making everything public (some of it probably already is due to your privacy settings) and no matter what you do, Facebook is free to do whatever it wants with the information on your profile. See, when you sign up for Facebook, you agree to the company's Terms of Service and you can't alter that with a Facebook post.

If you are concerned about what's on your profile, we recommend doing a privacy checkup on your account and limiting what you post on social media. In the meantime, don't reshare this post - or delete it if you already have.

Why These 4 Star Trainers Think You Should Be Taking More Gym Selfies

Love 'em or hate 'em, we shouldn't judge someone's gym selfie — it might just be helping that person reach their fitness goals. Several high-profile trainers all agree that progress photos, gym selfies, and quick snaps from your run are the ultimate way to stay on track, motivate yourself, feel energized, and measure progress.

When we sat down with Instagram sensation Kayla Itsines earlier this year, we asked her what she suggests to clients when they're feeling unmotivated. She told us that she encourages anyone hitting a slump to reflect on their progress photos to see how far they've come, and she also emphasized the importance of taking photos during each step of your fitness journey.

"My whole life is fitness, but of course I lose motivation too," she told POPSUGAR, but she looks to that visual community for inspiration — and you should, too! She suggested that anyone looking for extra accountability and motivational help should "join the [BBG] community and post progress photos" to keep themselves on track. Her encouragement sparked millions of women around the world to create specific "BBG accounts" on Instagram for just their gym and progress photos.

"It's OK to take a selfie. . . . You should be really proud of that. If it keeps you moving, great!"

Tone It Up founders Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott would agree and have noted that these pictures help individuals track progress. Not only do they encourage consistent check-ins on Instagram from their workouts (which can be found on popular hashtags like #TIUcheckin and #TIUteam), but they also encourage taking progress photos so you can gauge where you're at, saying, "Whether you want to lose weight, add muscle, tone up, or just become healthier, before [and after] pictures are the way to go!"

We also asked author of Shut Up and Run, Robin Arzon, about taking pictures on your run or while you're training. "People should be sharing their goals and successes," she told us. "It's OK to take a selfie on your route. . . . You should be really proud of that. If it keeps you moving, great!"

So there you have it — trainers from Australia to NYC saying to go ahead and snap that selfie. Your superfit, superaccomplished self will thank you later.

44 Times the Royals Were So Ridiculously High Fashion, We Couldn't Believe Our Eyes

When we think about Kate Middleton, Queen Letizia, Crown Princess Victoria, and the rest of the royals, elegant, coordinated looks often come to mind. But just for a second - slip off those white gloves and netted fascinators, because we're focusing on high-fashion outfits only. Believe it or not, Duchess Kate's walked the red carpet in sexy dresses that feature leg slits. And Princess Charlene of Monaco attends runway shows, like Louis Vuitton and Versace, on the regular.

Yes, these women know a thing or two about style, and when it comes to selecting favorite designers, they're well versed. Read on for 44 times our favorite royal icons gave up the satin gown for sophisticated minis splashed with graphics or, dare we say it, luxe-looking jumpsuits, mixed prints, and even leather! Perhaps not all members of the court would approve of these eye-catching ensembles, but we bet they'd make any street style star's heart skip a beat.

Read on to see the costumes we picked out for Hailey, Kendall, and Kylie, and check back later to see what they ended up rocking on Halloween.
