Mom Spreads Booster-Seat Awareness After Her Daughter's Stomach Was Sliced Open by a Seat Belt
After her 6-year-old daughter was seriously injured by a seat belt in a car accident, Shelly Martin is begging parents to keep their children in booster seats even if it may appear they've outgrown them. In September, Samantha Swartwout was sitting in the backseat of her father's car and wearing her seat belt behind her back when the car swerved off the road and into a tree. Samantha was severely injured when the seat belt sliced open her stomach, exposing her intestines, and also suffered a concussion and trauma to the head, requiring surgery.
Shelly is now spreading her daughter's sad story to prevent parents from making the same mistake that was made for Samantha. Although there are many different explanations for the appropriate time to graduate from the booster seat, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles says, "A child should remain in a booster seat until he or she is at least 8 years of age and 4 feet 9 inches tall."
Samantha spent three weeks at the VCU Medical Center and was recently released in October. "She would not have been this hurt in a booster," Shelly told CBS News. "Don't think that just because your child is 7 or 8 years that they are too big . . . they aren't!" Although Shelly cannot physically help her daughter's recovery, she explained that spreading awareness of booster-seat safety "has given her purpose."
Samantha's story is incredibly important for all parents to hear in order to point out that booster seats should only be taken away after your child has met the recommended requirements according to your state, and after that point, the seat-belt strap should never be placed behind your back.
This 1 Dude's Honest Review of Men's Grooming Gifts Will Make You Laugh
Whoever the man is that you're buying for this year, you love him and know him inside and out, right? Right. Then why the hell is he so hard to shop for every year? I'd love to think that no one knows my boyfriend better than I do, but when it comes to buying him a gift, I am clueless! And don't even get me started on my dad. Last year I got him an eye cream and was like, "I'm sorry, but this is legitimately the best I can do." (It was a really good eye cream, though.)
What I'm saying is, let me help you nail down great gifts for your guy(s) so you're not scrambling this December. As it happens, I am a man, and I've tried everything, so these don't just sound good - this stuff actually works.
This "Lost" Dog Reminds Democrats and Republicans What Really Matters
Lately, it's felt like the very fabric of this country is splitting at the seams. The explosive rhetoric and heated political debates of 2016 have left us feeling angry and bitter toward one another when what we really need right now is a little extra dose of empathy and compassion.
It's clear we need an outsider's perspective to bring us back to a place of love and acceptance, and Pedigree found the perfect creature for the job. Using an adorable "lost" dog, this video shows both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton supporters working to unite this pup with his owner and engage in friendly conversation. It's wonderful proof that Democrats and Republicans can find common ground if we just put in the effort to view one another as human beings instead of a set of opposing political beliefs.
As one man perfectly put it, "We all have our differences, but everyone loves dogs."
This Adorable 4-Year-Old Wants Your Vote For President
Not thrilled by the candidate options in this year's election, 4-year-old Chase decided to run for president. In this adorable political photography project shot by Pizzuti Studios Photography, Chase can be seen getting involved in every aspect of the race. From kissing babies (well, baby dolls) to showing off his presidential head of hair and perfectly tailored suits for photographers to snap shots of, this rambunctious little guy is campaigning hard, and the photos are nothing short of hysterical.
There's no way to know the outcome of the election, but one thing is certain: Chase would definitely make America cute again!
Your Late-Night TV Worlds Have Collided With This Epic Don Francisco and Jimmy Fallon Duet
Latino icon Don Francisco stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote his Telemundo show Don Francisco Te Invita, and as you can imagine, it was brilliant.
The beloved TV personality, who you probably recognize from his 53-year stint on Univision's Sabado Gigante, surprised viewers (and, frankly, all of us) after a fan submitted a question to Jimmy requesting the appearance. The Tonight Show host promptly obliged - with a musical twist.
"Legend has it that he can be summoned through the power of song," Jimmy joked before "giving it a try." It obviously worked, because now we have a piece of history: a video of Don Francisco and Jimmy channeling their inner Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson for a "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" cover. Amazing! Press play above to watch the magical moment.

The Doctor-Approved Secret to Clearing Your Hormonal Acne That Actually Works
When I tell you how I finally cleared up my hormonal acne, it is going to sound so painstakingly obvious that it might even seem . . . annoying. To make a long story short: I met with a doctor who helped me balance my hormones and improve my gut health, and my skin has never looked better.
At the start of Spring, I booked an appointment with Dr. Keith Berkowitz, an MD (internist) located in NYC who worked with Dr. Robert C. Atkins (as in the Atkins diet) for six years and now specializes in how eating affects health. He gave me a glucose test, took my blood, analyzed the lab results, and diagnosed me with reactive hypoglycemia. The latter means I process sugar unusually quickly, so I can't eat much of it (even fruit!). I learned I had high testosterone levels and was iodine deficient.
According to the American Thyroid Association, iodine is an element (not made by the body) needed for the production of the thyroid hormone. You get iodine from your diet and various foods, and if you do not have enough of it, you can't make the thyroid hormone, which regulates your metabolism as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, and bone maintenance.
I have not changed my skin care routine or received any new spa treatments.
"Women today are struggling with increased hormonal imbalance causing estrogen dominance, low levels of progesterone, and high levels of testosterone and DHEA [an endogenous steroid hormone]," Dr. Berkowitz told me via email. "This is complicated by the overall decrease in hormone levels as we age. It leads to women having dull, dry skin; a rush of wrinkles; increased pigmentation; and increased acne."
So I began on a journey to balance out what was going on internally by changing my diet and taking supplements. When it came to eating, I had previously spent a year living off of morning smoothies and eliminating gluten and dairy. Though it was technically "healthy," I was eating way too much fruit and spiking my blood sugar.
Dr. Berkowitz tweaked my diet so that I was eating more balanced, portion-controlled meals and snacks that include carbohydrates (including vegetables and fruits) with high-fiber foods and lean protein or healthy fats (like avocado). "It is important that you eat three meals and one snack every day," he explained of his general diet philosophy. "Eating balanced meals will minimize fluctuations in blood sugar and increases in insulin levels."
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Jae Payne
He immediately added bread back into my regime, but only low-carb (Alvarado Street Bakery Sprouted Flax Seed Bread), and I can have just one piece at a time to ensure I am not carb-loading. I was permitted low-lactose dairy, such as goat cheese, since it is a great source of protein. In addition, I eat a lot of organic chicken and salmon, eggs, salads dressed with olive oil and lemon (rather than sugary dressing), and low-carb Wasa crackers topped with hummus and avocado. My smoothies were tweaked: instead of blending in four fruits, I can have one (usually low-sugar, antioxidant-rich berries). Any time I do eat fruit, I can have half the amount (such as half a pear) and mix it with protein, such as a spoon of almond butter. Eating this way has stabilized my blood sugar (I no longer get 3 p.m. sugar cravings), and I feel less restless overall.
On the supplements front, I started taking kelp supplements to help with my iodine deficiency, DIM Plus to give me an estrogen boost, and theanine, which just helps me relax at night.
I expected to debloat (I did!) and lose a few pounds (check!), but what I did not see coming was how these tweaks would significantly affect my skin. Pre-Dr. Berkowitz, I had combination skin, meaning I would occasionally get pimples in places I am greasier (usually my cheeks and chin). And every month a few days before my period, I got a few "lurkers" (below-the-skin pimples) around my chin. These are typically caused by hormones and can't be cured by creams — they have to go away on their own.
After a Summer spent traveling as far as Greece and Prague, wearing tons of gooey sunscreen, and straight-up sweating, I expected to see my usual cluster of whiteheads on my cheeks. I have also waited each month for the arrival of those chin lurkers. But for the past three months, my skin has been completely and totally clear. I have no dryness and no oiliness. The lines on my forehead are naturally smoothing out and the redness around my nose fading. I have not changed my skin care routine or received any new spa treatments.
What had changed was my gut health. "Tiny bacteria in the gut are one of the major control systems in the body," Dr. Berkowitz explained. "These bacteria have a direct role in helping maintain the health of the skin. They help your absorb nutrients needed to protect and repair itself. They protect the integrity of the gut lining. The gut lining helps protect against inflammation (which ages skin), and it protects the skin environmental toxin damage."
He also told me that gut in the bacteria can cause acne, because that area produces something called substance P. This affects sebum production (the cause of oily skin).
My gut bacteria wasn't all that had been regulated after three months of sticking to Dr. Berkowitz's plan: my hormones tested more balanced, my iodine levels were better, and my glucose more stable.
"The gut lining helps protect against inflammation (which ages skin), and it protects the skin environmental toxin damage."
"Your eating plan led to your hormones being better balanced — lowering DHEA and testosterone — and having better balance with progesterone and estrogen," Dr. Berkowitz told me when I asked how this could have affected my skin. "The lifestyle also leads to lower levels of cortisol [a hormone that regulates stress, metabolism, and inflammation] and insulin [the hormone that regulates metabolism and gives your cells energy]." He noted that when these hormones are high, it can cause drier skin and premature aging. This is because there is a connection between stress and the deterioration of cells, and skin is made up of cells.
A hormone imbalance can also cause discoloration of the skin. "Estrogen and progesterone can trigger the melasma, which are brown or light gray patches of pigmentation that most commonly appear on the face," he said. "It usually appears between the ages of 20-50 and is most common in pregnant women or those on an oral contraceptive pill."
In addition, he shared that low estrogen can lead to decreased collagen production and more wrinkling of the skin. Low levels of progesterone are associated with decreased skin elasticity. And a deficiency in DHEA is problematic, because it helps control oil production. DHEA also increases collagen production, which you want for youthful-looking skin.
When it comes to testosterone, having too much can lead to acne through an increased sebum production. So that explains why decreasing my testosterone levels eliminated my breakouts.
Though my situation was very specific, others can benefit from getting their blood tested and tweaking in specific ways that make sense for them (as instructed by a professional MD). While we are in no way telling you to run out and try a bunch of supplements to balance all of this out (please talk to your doctor first!), regulating your hormones and improving your gut health can directly give you clearer skin with better tone and texture. It happened to me!
If you get the OK from your doctor, here is a list of supplements (from Dr. Berkowitz) and what they do:
- Alpha lipoic acid: helps stop the stiffening of collagen fibers.
- Antioxidants: stop free radical production. For example, vitamins A, C, and E help to better hydrate the skin.
- Hydrolyzed collagen: reduces wrinkles.
- Hyaluronic acid: hydrates skin. (Yes, you can take the popular skin care ingredient as a supplement, as well!)
- Astaxanthin: fights free radicals and prevents damage from the sun and other environmental toxins.
Here are specific supplements for acne:
- Zinc: helps accelerate the development of new clear skin cells and reduce the inflammatory response to bacteria.
- Probiotic: promotes healthy or good bacteria and thus decreases the inflammatory response that damages skin.
- Coconut oil: helps replace the protective acid layer that keeps skin healthy and reduces inflammation.
He also shared an anti-inflammatory eating plan:
- Avoid refined carbohydrates, which increase insulin and inflammation.
- Avoid gluten, cow's milk dairy, processed foods, and excessive amounts of omega-6, which are all pro-inflammatory.
- Increase use of spices: turmeric, cinnamon, garlic, and parsley all have anti-inflammatory effects to help keep the skin healthy and slow down the aging process.

If You Missed October's Gorgeous Supermoon, You Can Catch It Again Later This Year
Did you happen to look up at the night sky in late October? If you did, you were lucky enough to catch the hunter's supermoon, a full moon that illuminated the night sky and left sky gazers astonished.
October's full moon was both a supermoon and a hunter's moon, an event that occurs in the Fall. Typically, the moon rises 50 minutes later each day. But a hunter's moon signifies that the "October moon rises 30 minutes later" instead, reports National Geographic. If you don't know, a supermoon happens when the full moon "is closer to Earth than average," according to NASA. The combination of these two events meant people saw a moon that looked larger than usual as it lit up the sky earlier in the night.
If you're sad you missed this supermoon, you can catch the next two in November and December. The Nov. 14 "extra-supermoon is both the closest full moon of 2016 and the first one of its kind in the 21st century, which we won't see again till Nov. 25, 2034. The full moon of November 14 is not only the closest full moon of 2016 but also the closest full moon to date in the 21st century. The full moon won't come this close to Earth again until November 25, 2034. The supermoon in December will occur on the 14th, and sadly, it means you won't be able to see the Geminid meteor shower.
To see what the hunter's supermoon looked like, check out the incredible photos ahead from around the world, and mark your calendars now for the next two supermoons. All it takes is peeking out your window the night of to catch a fun and amazing astronomical treat.

This Mom Has a Powerful Message About Vaccinations After Her 12-Year-Old Daughter Died From the Flu
Like many 12-year-old children, Piper Lowery was afraid of needles and refused to get a flu shot, and her mom didn't want to see her in pain and let her skip the vaccination. Now, her mom, Pegy, is the one suffering after her 12-year-old daughter passed away from flu complications a few months ago. Pegy is sharing her story to spread awareness and beg parents to have their children vaccinated.
Piper's fever hit 105 degrees and she was vomiting blood, but the flu attacked her kidneys and she passed away from flu-related renal failure in January. She's unaware if the vaccination would have saved her daughter's life, but she's working hard to spread her story so other parents do not have to lose a child. Pegy has joined forces with the Fight the Flu Foundation to knit hats for babies and promote the urgency of the influenza vaccination. "According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a 2014 study showed that the flu vaccine reduced children's risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit admission by 74 percent during flu seasons from 2010-2012," CBS News reports. The CDC recommends vaccinations for children starting at 6 months old. "I want my daughter's legacy to live on forever," Pegy said. "That's my job now – to be her legacy maker."

A Hospital Charged This Mom Who Gave Birth in Her Car the Full Price
When Paula D'Amore gave birth, she planned to do it in a delivery room at her local hospital, but her little one couldn't wait. Instead of welcoming her first child in a maternity ward, she gave birth in the back seat of her car.
This Florida mom only made it to the parking lot before climbing into the back seat to deliver her baby girl, Daniella, in the fire lane at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. By the time nurses ran out to help with the birth, Paula's husband had already caught the baby's head.
Seven months after Daniella's surprising arrival, her parents received another unplanned shock - the hospital sent them a $7,000 bill. According to WSVN-TV, this is the hospital's full delivery fee, and even though the new parents planned for birthing costs before their child's delivery, they thought the hospital would adjust their bill since she didn't even give birth in a delivery room.
The hospital has not issued a statement at this time.

The Universe Is a Lot Bigger Than Scientists Thought - About 10 Times Bigger
New findings from NASA and the Hubble Space Telescope indicate that the universe is much larger than we'd ever thought. Scientists originally believed the universe contained about 100 to 200 billion galaxies. Turns out, that estimate is way off, and there could be as many as 2 trillion galaxies, according to a press release.
A British team, led by scientist Professor Christopher Conselice, "painstakingly" analyzed images from the telescope and found that about 90 percent of the galaxies in the universe are too far to be fully captured by the telescope. Since the galaxies are not consistently spread throughout the universe, there could be a whole lot more out there that definitely exists that we can't yet see nor count.
In the press statement, Conselice said, "It boggles the mind that over 90 percent of the galaxies in the Universe have yet to be studied. Who knows what interesting properties we will find when we observe these galaxies with the next generation of telescopes."
While it is daunting to think about the vastness of our universe, it's thrilling to see scientists make these strides to improve our collective grasp on what exactly is happening outside of our little blue planet.

The Secret Ingredient That Makes Chicken Nuggets So Addicting
Ever wonder why your kids refuse to eat that expertly prepared, fresh-out-of-the-oven roasted chicken you made for dinner but will devour an unending amount of store-bought chicken nuggets?
Leave it to Dr. Oz – the health pro who uncovers the truth behind our favorite store-bought foods (we're looking at you, rotisserie chicken!) – to head up an investigation into the hidden ingredients found in the kid-friendly chicken nuggets you buy from your grocery store's frozen food aisle.
With the help of food journalist Jenna Wolfe, they discovered a shocking additive: "There's sugar in a lot of these nuggets, which you might not think of being in a savory food like this," she said. "Sugar is a way these nuggets hook you into craving them." Although it's often right on the ingredient list, many health-conscious parents can still get duped. "It . . . can also be disguised as evaporated cane juice or evaporated corn syrup," she noted.
OK, so that's not great, but at least they're getting protein, right?
Wrong, reveals Dr. Oz. A typical 4-ounce serving of grilled chicken breast has 32 grams of protein, and the same four ounces in nugget form gets you only nine grams. Their investigation did find some nugget brands with as high as 21 grams, but that's a far cry from what real chicken offers. The reason for such a differential is that, as you might have guessed, chicken nuggets aren't just chicken but a chicken mixture of sorts. "Anytime you see a chicken or a piece of a nugget shaped like a house or a viking, that's not natural chicken," Wolfe said. "It's mainly ground-up chicken, and when you have a ground-up mix, then you can mold it and shape it, market it to kids, and parents go out and buy it."
As for what protein kids do get from nuggets, the added ingredients like sugar can essentially outweigh the benefits. As Dr. Oz concluded, "They frustrate me more than anything else because you think you're doing the right thing for your family."

Alex Guarnaschelli can, and she's not only looking forward to the feast itself, but she's even more excited about the most underrated and under-appreciated part: leftovers.
The Food Network star partnered with Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi wines to dream up a few recipes that put Thanksgiving leftovers front and center. "Incorporating leftovers with new, fresh ingredients creates new traditions," she said. Another tip? Drink the wine you cook with. "This idea of adding wine to food and then drinking it as you eat, I like that," she proclaimed. After taking her advice, we highly recommend it.
Keep reading for some of her transformative recipes.
Spinach and Turkey Phyllo With Fondue
Turnovers:
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- Kosher salt
- 3/4 pound leftover roasted Butterball turkey meat, dark and white meat, "flaked" into bite-size pieces
- 1/2 cup leftover (thick) turkey gravy
- 1 box spinach and feta phyllo appetizers
- 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parley
Fondue sauce:
- 2 cups Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Chardonnay
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons smooth Dijon mustard
- 2 cups finely grated Swiss cheese
- 1 cup finely grated parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons Tabasco
Turnover directions:
- Preheat oven to 400 F.
- Make the filling: In a medium-size skillet, heat the butter and add the turkey meat. Cook over medium heat, stirring with a wooden spoon, for 3-5 minutes or until the turkey is warm. Stir in the gravy and cook until the gravy coats the meat, an additional 3-5 minutes.
- Bake and serve: Arrange the spinach and phyllo appetizers in a single layer on a baking sheet and place in the center of the oven. Bake until they are golden brown, an average of 12-15 minutes. Turn the phyllo out onto a platter and arrange in a single layer. Stir the parsley into the turkey and arrange a generous spoonful on top of each phyllo triangle. Serve immediately with the warm fondue sauce for drizzling and dunking.
Fondue directions:
- Reduce the wine: In a medium pot, reduce the Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Chardonnay over medium heat until the liquid measures about ½ cup, 5-8 minutes.
- Make the fondue sauce: In the same pot, add the cream and the mustard to a simmer gently with a pinch of salt. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the Swiss cheese, parmesan, Worcestershire and Tabasco and continue stirring until cheese melts. Taste for seasoning.
Root Vegetable and Mashed Potato Cake
The sauce:
- 3 cups Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon
- 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
The root vegetable cake:
- 2 large Idaho potatoes
- 1 cup mashed potatoes
- 1 medium head rutabaga, peeled and quartered
- 1 medium head celery root, peeled and quartered
- 3/4 cup clarified butter
- 2 large garlic cloves, minced
- Kosher salt
- 2 cups leftover stuffing
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- Make the sauce: In a medium pot, reduce the Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon until about 1/2 cup liquid remains. Transfer to a medium bowl. Whisk in mustard, red wine vinegar and olive oil with a pinch salt.
- Make the vegetable mix: Use the largest size holes on a box grater, the "teeth" of a mandolin or a food processor attachment to shred the potatoes, rutabaga and celery root. Toss them in 1/2 cup of the butter and the garlic and season with salt. You should have about 4 cups of grated vegetables.
- Cook the vegetable cake: In a nine-inch nonstick skillet, heat the remaining butter over medium heat. Remove skillet from the stove and fill halfway with vegetables. Top with a layer of mashed potatoes. Top with remaining vegetables. Skillet will likely be overfilled. Put the skillet back on the stove and cook over high heat until the edges of the underside brown, five to eight minutes.
- Finish cooking and serve: Spread the stuffing in a thin layer on a baking sheet and place in the center of the oven. Place the skillet on another baking sheet in the oven and cook until tender when pierced in the center with the tip of a knife, 25-30 minutes. Remove both from the oven. Drain excess butter. Season with salt. Place a 12-inch round platter over the skillet and turn the cake out on its second side onto the platter. Cut into 8-10 wedges. Top with all of the stuffing. Serve immediately with sauce.
Bloating Like Crazy? Try This Natural Approach
Abnormal bloating and distention seems to be affecting more and more people lately, and it's not just a matter of vanity: it's a problem that can create intense discomfort, pain, and a slew of other symptoms.
While the root of each individual's bloating problem may differ, there's a treatment that can fix it in many cases: acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We spoke with Dr. Magnolia Ng from Advance Healthcare SF to get further insight into what's going on in our gut, how to treat it, and how it all works.
"There are many possible causes of indigestion, also known as Dyspepsia," said Dr. Ng. "Many times, when western medicine tests for bacteria, parasites, and celiac disease, results come back negative and patients do not respond to the pharmaceutical drugs prescribed, so they have to look for alternative forms of treatment." We sought Dr. Ng's treatment after going through a similar experience, and it has been working! So naturally (pun intended), we wanted to know more.
I Had Inexplicable, Incurable, Extreme Bloating For Almost a Year: Here's What Finally Fixed It
Bloating symptoms are totally on a spectrum, and because no two people are exactly alike, no two bloating cases are identical, either. This is what makes acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine so special for these cases. "In Traditional Chinese Medicine, looking at the body holistically, we take into consideration different patterns of disharmony that cause indigestion," said Dr. Ng. "We take into account the very different ways in which people experience the symptoms of indigestion, as well as the nature of the pain or discomfort - is it dull or severe, stabbing, burning, and is it accompanied by a feeling of fullness? When does the pain occur: in the morning, afternoon, or at night?"
Your TCM doctor and acupuncturist will also look at "What relieves or exacerbates the pain? Is it better or worse after eating, with or without pressure, with heat or cold, with rest or exercise? Is there belching, nausea, vomiting, or regurgitation? Is there a feeling of bloating and if so, where and how does it feel?" Dr. Ng said "These questions help an acupuncturist to determine what aspect of digestion is not functioning properly and what imbalances need to be corrected in the system."
This practice of TCM and acupuncture is rooted in the concept of keeping a free flowing Qi, your body's natural energy. "In our clinic, the treatments protocol is a combination of tonifying the digestive system through the stomach, spleen, and liver meridians, as well as relaxing the mind and body with calming points and herbs," said Dr. Ng.
In acupuncture specifically, the needles are used to alleviate and release blockages of this energy (Qi), which can cause medical problems and even weight gain. An acupuncturist looks at "meridians" throughout the body to improve the circulation of Qi - those meridians are like a map of where the energy flows.
Here's how Dr. Ng explained it: "We insert needles into seemingly unrelated parts of your body because there are local points - areas from where the pain radiates - and distal points, which correspond to remote areas of your body, such as your extremities, that have many nerve endings that trigger a strong response through the stomach, spleen, and liver meridian to help move the energy flow in your abdomen."
The needles are placed accordingly to help unblock what is essentially a clog, or traffic jam. Dr. Tony Y. Chong and Dr. Mark C. Lee of the May Clinic explain this as "cutaneous areas of high electrical conductivity," and the impact on "adjacent tissue."
Acupuncture isn't a BandAid approach or just a symptom-treater. Dr. Ng directed us to a study that showed the efficacy of acupuncture for indigestion and bloating, stating that "Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of functional dyspepsia." And a 2007 study showed that acupuncture is more effective than antacids. This is because the treatment doesn't just target the symptom of bloating or digestive dysfunction itself, but it hones in whatever the root cause is (which in some cases is stress).
Additionally, the acupuncture isn't used as a standalone treatment. Your doctor will also use different kinds of herbal medicines to treat your problem. "There are a few excellent Chinese herbal patent formulas that can help treat poor digestion and relieve symptoms," she said. Herbal blends like "Mu Xiang Sheng Qi Wan, Bao He Wan, Xiang Sha Yang Wei Wan, and Curing Pills, all work a little differently depending on your condition, but overall work to improve energy flow in your intestines, clearing out dampness and wastes from your digestive system - allowing your body to be more balanced."
The combination of unblocking the clogged energy, reducing stress, regulating digestion, and using herbs to contribute to the free flowing of your body's energy, all contributes to your bloating relief. The doctor will focus on your diet as well, and exactly how you're eating (and when). We suggest finding a TCM doctor and acupuncturist near you, and developing a personalized plan that works for your body. As Dr. Ng put it, "A TCM practitioner can work with you to devise a diet specifically geared to your individual body's needs, as well as prescribe and create herbal formulas, or offer an acupuncture treatment, each devised specifically for your ailment." Also of note: while some acupuncturists do take insurance, if you end up paying out of pocket, you can expect to pay between $50 and $100, depending on the length of your visit, location, and that practice's pricing.
Regardless of what your particular approach might be, she summed it up quite well: "Body awareness and education of common symptoms is the first step to good health."

This Chic Label Is Making It Their Business to Spread Body Positivity
With just three years under its belt, the Of Mercer brand is relatively new to the industry - but that may be exactly what we need. Co-founders Emelyn Northway and Dorie Golkin launched the label to change the womens' workwear market with affordable, high-quality pieces (all under $250); now they're bringing their innovation to extended sizes.
After gathering data from 50+ participants - professionals, plus-size experts, models, and influencers - they got to work creating a lineup to address the fit needs of customers size 12 and up, and promising to tweak, revamp, and continue updating extended sizes even after they launch.
The timing couldn't be better for an industry - and its customers - who desperately want a body-positive makeover. Drawing on that momentum, Of Mercer enlisted a group of plus-size influencers as its faces, like founder of The 12ish Style, Katie Sturino, model and ALDA founder, Julie Henderson, and Clémentine Desseaux, of the All Woman Project to rep the brand. With women like that in your corner, you can expect big things, especially when the lineup looks this good. Read on for a glimpse of the new collection ahead of the launch, exclusively right here.

This Devastated Dad Shared the Truth About Childhood Cancer With 1 Heartbreaking Photo
As a photographer, Andy Whelan understands the importance of capturing the truth of any situation, even if it isn't always a pleasant sight.
The hardest photo he has ever taken was of his own daughter, just days ago, after she was given the news that she most likely only had weeks to live. At just 4-years-old, Jessica has been waging a difficult war against cancer for the past 12 months after being diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma.
As upsetting and tragic as this black-and-white photo of Jessica is, Andy Whelan made the decision to post this image as a way of sharing the truth about childhood cancer in a way that his words could never express. He shared his rationale on Facebook as well as making it clear that he offers no apologies for strangers who are offended - this is something that Andy, his family, and many others battling childhood cancer have to see everyday.
This photograph was made in a moment that we as parents could offer her no comfort, her pushing us away whilst she rode out this searing pain in solitude. This sadly, for us as a family, is not a sight that we see rarely. This is now a familiar sight that we see regularly through each day and night, its frequency now more often. This is the true face of cancer, my baby girls blood vessels protruding from beneath her skin, a solitary tear running down her cheek, her body stiffened and her face contorted in pain…With this photo I do not mean to offend or upset, I do mean however to educate and shock those that see it in it's context. Perhaps by seeing this photo people not in our position will be made aware of the darkness that is childhood cancer, perhaps these same people may be able to do something about it so that in the future no child has to suffer this pain, so that no parent has to bear witness to their own flesh and blood deteriorating daily …
Before her diagnosis I was one of those ignorant to the darkness of childhood cancer, not truly appreciating the hell that it brings. It would never happen to us! Now I give childhood cancer the respect it deserves, seeing too many children suffering this same fate and watching families torn apart.
If this photograph only serves as a purpose to make people think twice about this evil and put into perspective what it does to a child then it has achieved its purpose. Research needs to be done, cures need to be found, too long now has this been allowed to happen.
Please I beg of you, as a heartbroken father, it is too late for my daughter, but childhood cancer needs to be cured. No family should have to go through this hell.
All The Times Cookie Lyon Took Us to Beauty School on Empire
In my opinion, television hasn't seen a badass black-girl heroine quite like Empire's Cookie Lyon. Emmy-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson plays the sassy, unfiltered matriarch who isn't afraid to stick to her guns and change up her look. From fierce stiletto nails to pin-up baby bangs and punchy bold lipstick, Cookie is the definition of a beauty risk taker.
I mean, who else struts out of jail fully glammed with a sleek, high ponytail in tow? Or sits at the head of the boardroom draped in hot pink fur? If you've been wanting to explore your wild side, you're sure to draw plenty of bold inspiration from the diva extraordinaire herself. Keep reading to learn why she'll become your new beauty spirit animal. And keep up with her style every Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
Gigi Hadid Wasn't "Thin Enough," So She Walked the Runway in a Poncho
Gigi Hadid and Tommy Hilfiger have shared many big moments together: a designer collaboration, several runway shows, and even plans for a Spring '17 collection. You would think the partnership came together seamlessly, but in a new video interview, Tommy revealed that their budding relationship almost didn't happen because of one topic: Gigi's weight.
"[Gigi is the] All-American girl next door with an exotic twist to her look. Our casting director said, 'She doesn't really fit because you know she's not quite as tall as the other girls, she's not quite as thin. So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her, it covered a lot of her body unfortunately, but it received millions of hits," Tommy said. "So I said, you know, why don't we ask her to design a line with us. So I said, Gigi come design this with me, we'll do a Gigi x Tommy couture line."
Not surprisingly, the Tommy x Gigi line drew major attention from the fashion crowd, with A-list celebs like Taylor Swift and Serena Williams, rocking the gear. Though this is the first we've heard of Tommy talking about Gigi's weight, the model has spoken out before that she's not your average model and she's pretty damn proud of it.
"No, I don't have the same body type as the other models in shows . . . I'm a hard worker that's confident in myself, one that came at a time where fashion industry was ready for a change," she said in an Instagram post. "Yes, I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I'm not asking for special treatment."
Gigi has since shot down body shamers from all sides, creating a more positive environment for all models, whether they're a size zero or not, and has nailed every single runway show she's walked in. She's even walking in the Victoria's Secret Fashion show (again) come December. Suffice it to say, Gigi's weight should have never mattered and it doesn't. Read on to watch the entire video interview, then check out all the times Gigi ruled the Tommy runway.

6 Amazing Things Parents Don't Know About the Kidz Bop Crew
It's hard to believe that Kidz Bop has been filling family homes and cars for 15 years with kid-friendly versions of the most popular songs of the season. The group of performers representing this beloved music brand has rotated over the years, and the current Kidz Bop kids are Ashlynn Chong, Sela Hack, Grant Knoche, and Matt Martinez. In honor of their new album, Kidz Bop 33, the youngsters behind this beloved music chatted with POPSUGAR about their unique ability to unite both kids and parents with their songs. Children might love singing along with their own peers and parents may appreciate the age-appropriate twist, but there's still a lot more to appreciate about this group that many don't realize.
- They're Always Working: From rehearsals to shows and press events, no two days are the same for these young talents. They spend almost every weekend together for shows and are just as committed to their obligations during the week even though Grant recognizes that they have a lot on their plate. "We work on everything all of the time so we are constantly practicing the show, our singing, and our dancing, so it's a lot of hard work but it's also a lot of fun," Grant said.
-
They're Actually Kids!: No adults posing as teens here! Although Sela and Ashlynn are the oldest members of the group at 15 years old, Ashlynn has already been a Kidz Bop kid for the past three years. Grant and Matt are both 13 years old and have also been with the group since they were each 10 years old.
-
They Do Their Schooling Together: These kids have a dedicated tutor who teaches them during the morning and is on tour with them. While some might think that they would get sick of each other, Matt enjoys their unique schooling arrangement. "It's really cool because we get a lot of one-on-one time with our teacher, which is a lot of help," Matt said.
-
They Are Legitimately Friends: Although they spend so much time together, from the tour bus to the classroom, during their limited free time, they opt to enjoy it with one another instead of exploring on their own. From hanging out on the tour bus to going on stage, Sela realizes that the bond they've formed goes beyond friendship. "We're all like a family, we're really close with each other," Sela said.
-
They Have Some Great Advice For Kids: One of the reasons this group appears to be so passionate about what they do is because they really do love it and they hope their young fans not only see them going after their own dreams but also realize the importance of following their own. "Just love what you do because when you love what you're doing, you'll definitely be happier and have more success," Sela said.
-
They Have a Clothing Line Inspired by Them: These kids aren't just dedicated to their music, they also have some serious style! Inspired by each tween's personal fashion, Crazy 8 worked to create a new capsule collection to bring star-worthy fashion to your little one. Now kids can rock some of the same cool looks as their favorite performers with diverse items, from a bomber jackets to faux-fur pieces. Exclusively shop these cool looks here before their Nov. 7 debut!
