Microsoft's Beautiful Surface Studio Is Its First Ever Desktop PC, and You're Going to Want It

At an event in New York City on Oct. 26, Microsoft unveiled its first ever desktop PC: the Surface Studio. The computer, which is already available for preorder, boasts a number of features that make it well worth the price and hype. The key details are:

  • A display that does more than show: The 28-inch touchscreen display with 13.5 million pixels will work with the Surface Dial, a new tool with haptic feedback and a series of menu options that make it easier to edit and create. It will also work with the Surface Pen.
  • A screen that is true to life: The display comes with True Color and True Scale, two features that Microsoft believes will help creators make better designs and products. True Color includes more color output, and True Scale means whatever you see on your screen is how it will look in real life. Using 12-point font? What you see on your screen is what you'll get if you print it out.
  • Write on the display without worrying: The Surface Studio display comes with a "zero gravity hinge," which lets you shift the display down to 20 degrees.
  • Other specs: The Surface Studio is 12.5mm thin and has stereo microphones that work with Cortana, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, four USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, and 32 GB RAM.
  • Price: The Surface Studio will retail for $2,999. A limited number are shipping during the holiday, with a full release in 2017.

You can preorder the Surface Studio via Microsoft or Best Buy. See photos of the Surface Studio and Surface Dial ahead, and be sure to put this on your holiday wish list earlier than later.

Meal Prep Kind of Sucks but You Can Still Make It Out Alive

#MealPrep has over three million tagged pictures on Instagram. Seriously. Go look at it. There are also accounts dedicated to meal prepping, like @mealpreponfleek and @mealprepdaily, with hundreds of thousands of followers. The photos are captivating, inspiring, and . . . intimidating as hell!

People are OBSESSED with meal prep. And for good reason - there are countless benefits to planning and preparing your meals ahead of time, and it's a surefire way to help you eat healthier and lose weight. I myself have touted its ability to help save money and provide more nutritious food throughout the week. But while everyone is singing its praises, here's what they're not telling you: it's not that easy. This might get some people riled up (trigger warning), but I have to say it - meal prep kind of sucks, and we need to address it.

No matter how simple meal prep may look, there's a lot of legwork. Here's what you need to be aware of ahead of time so you don't get so frustrated you give up forever. Because in the end, it's absolutely worth it, but we need to talk about the parts that suck so we can come into it with a positive attitude and sustain this helpful, healthful practice each week. For those of you who have been struggling through these things, know you're not alone!

  • The dishes are going to be a pain in the ass. Pots, pans, bowls, whisks, knives . . . when you're cooking food for the whole week, you're going to have almost a week's worth of dishes to clean up. Plus, if you're working with limited equipment, you may need to do some midprep washing to continue your healthy endeavors. Just know this ahead of time to prevent frustration!
  • The entire thing is like the kitchen Olympics. Have you ever tried cooking quinoa on the stovetop with chicken in the oven while chopping veggies and whisking up a salad dressing? It's like jumping up and down on one leg while rubbing your stomach and patting your head, but your head is on fire and the room is on fire and everything is on fire. OK, maybe it's not that dramatic, but if you're lacking culinary prowess, this can be more than daunting at first. Start by cooking foods you're more familiar with. Is cooking brown rice easier for you than cooking quinoa? Start there! More familiar with how to sauté asparagus versus sweet potatoes? Go for the greens. Keep a familiar "control group" when you're starting out so you're not overwhelmed by too many new projects.
  • The prep requires prep. You'll need to know exactly what you're making ahead of time in order to have all the groceries you need. I can't tell you how many times I've returned from Trader Joe's or Whole Foods only to curse at the sky saying, "HOW DID I FORGET EGGS?!?" You'll need to choose recipes and map out each day of meals, and from there, create a list of groceries. Make that list, check it twice. Or three times.
  • Making your own weekly plan is hard. Unless you're Bobby Flay, creating a delicious week of meals can be intimidating, if not outright impossible. It's OK to rely on a preset meal plan! You can find meal prep ideas here on POPSUGAR, browse Pinterest, or try programs like Kayla Itsines's BBG or Tone It Up - they craft weekly meal plans and specifically outline what you'll be eating and when and include grocery lists.
  • It takes forever. Meal prep takes a long time, particularly when you're new at it. Once you have a routine, a rhythm, and a set of recipes, it will get easier . . . but from my experience, not THAT much easier. You need to carve out time for this so you don't rush and then end up with burnt (or half-cooked) food, incomplete meals, or high stress levels (or all of the above). There are hacks to make meal prep easier, and you'll get faster over time - just be patient!
  • You're committing to a new lifestyle. This might sound weird, but it's not just an activity . . . it's a new way of life. You'll be grocery shopping a LOT more (produce goes bad quickly - looking at you, avocados), and you'll be sacrificing some of your weekend to commit to healthy eating throughout the week. It takes time, it takes effort, and it takes commitment - but the payoff is amazing.

So now you know. If you've been meal prepping on your own, buried in a mountain of dirty dishes that never seems to shrink, wondering why everyone is so joyfully obsessed - it's because they got past these hurdles. But you're not the only one with these frustrations! Meal prep is just like exercise; it's hard work, sometimes you hate it, sometimes it makes you miserable, but in the end, you feel incredible, and you're doing something awesome for your body.

This Elder Wand Theory Will Have You Questioning Everything You Thought You Knew

Harry Potter fans know one of the most rewarding perks of rereading the series on the regular are the new details you discover each time. If you're really lucky, you might just discover something mind-blowing. This is what happened to Reddit user Wmdonovan23 as they reread Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and found that the elder wand might've belonged to Voldemort - not Dumbledore.

Here's how this theory explains the process of how the elder wand changes ownership. In the books, the elder wand changes ownership by conquering the previous owner. With this logic, it's clear how Draco became the owner of the elder wand, since he disarmed Dumbledore. However, the alternative theory traces the elder wand's roots back to when Grindelwald stole the wand from Gregorovitch. In that scene, Grindelwald merely steals the wand and attempts to stun Gregorovitch. So if you follow the logic of elder wand ownership, this means that Grindelwald was never really the true master of the elder wand and neither was Dumbledore, after he defeated him.

So who is the true owner? Voldemort, of course! Voldemort found Gregorovitch, killed him, and became the new master of the elder wand. But as Reddit user Wmdonovan23 states, the wand never worked properly for him because he was "less of a wizard," considering three of his horcruxes were already destroyed at this point. He was still the true owner.

The end result is the same. Harry ends up becoming the true master because he did defeat Voldemort and overpowered him - not because he stole the wand from Draco Malfoy. Convinced yet?

This theory was fiercely debated years before on a forum called Science Fiction and Fantasy. One user named Julian brought up the same questions in 2012 - and users here decided that the laws around ownership of the elder wand are very different. The elder wand simply responds to the more powerful wizard who takes the wand - no matter how it's done. So, even though Grindelwald stole the wand, Gregorovitch was still left without one, rendering him powerless and leaving the elder wand to declare allegiance to its new, more powerful owner, discussed user Manishearth. User Janoma chimed in to say that this idea still applies when Harry takes the wand from Draco, also leaving him powerless and making the elder wand choose Harry as its new owner.

J.K. Rowling has previously addressed this elder wand confusion, telling Today that, "To truly own the Elder Wand, which means to receive the full benefits, double-edged though it is, of all its power, you have to have conquered the previous owner." However, Rowling never addressed the ownership path before Dumbledore and Draco in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Pretty much, we're going to need Rowling to give us some answers STAT.

This Luxury Retailer Now Sells Tamales, and the Internet Is Freaking Out

Neiman Marcus is known for its extravagant gift offerings, including complete meals made with fresh and fancy ingredients. Some of their Latin-inspired dishes, however, have been met with derision.

One of those offerings is an order of handmade tamales, originally priced at $92 and now on sale for $69. While that's way more than we're used to spending on the comforting corn- and meat-based cakes, the order does include a whopping 72 tamales. People are more upset, however, by the fact that a luxury retailer is selling a food that's typically associated with home-cooked meals or street vendors.

In addition to the conversation-making tamales, Neiman Marcus is also selling an enchilada dinner that includes six beef enchiladas and six chicken enchiladas for $54, originally $72.

While we're still scratching our heads at this one, we're curious to know how you feel. Let us know, below.

Trying to Lose Weight but . . . Wine

If you live by the motto that it's wine o'clock somewhere, you're probably curling up with a glass of red or white at this very moment. As you sip, you contemplate the question, "If water can be turned into wine, why does it have so many damn calories?!" These funny quotes may not be able to take the calories away from your glass, but they'll definitely put a smile on your face.

What Having 4 Kids (Including Twins) Has Done to My Body and My Confidence

The following post was written by Joanna Venditti of Nesting Story, who shares her adventures in raising her four kids. As her twins reach the seven-month mark, Joanna shares her thoughts on her own body image and what it means to be healthy.

Isn't it incredible what the human body can do? Or better yet, what a woman's body can do? I have had four children, including twins, in the span of five years. Yes, my body did that! Today our youngest, Mia and Everly, are seven months old and I am trying to wake up every morning to work out before everyone else is up. Most days I succeed and I am actually starting to see my body come back. But it has been through a war.

Since I was young I struggled with my weight, always being a little on the heavy side. I would tend to compensate with my bubbly personality and spend a lot of time on my hair and makeup. Finally, while in college, I reached my goal weight by working out and dieting A LOT. Back then my sole purpose was to turn heads. I know, that's pretty shallow, but it's true. I was already dating my now husband Mike, and knew that he would love me whatever size I was, but I still craved walking into a room and having all eyes on me.

Although my weight fluctuated, I knew tricks on how to lose 10 pounds scarily fast, especially for our wedding and honeymoon. I wouldn't say I ever had an eating disorder, but I know that my weight control was coming from a place where I felt I had to punish my body.

Getting pregnant and watching my belly grow while expecting our first two kids was so exciting and I was able to drop almost every one of those 50 lbs I gained with each pregnancy… but again it was coming from this negative and frustrating place.

When I found out I was expecting twins I couldn't wrap my mind around how enormous I was going to get. I was already well known for having huge basketball-size bellies whenever I was pregnant, but growing two babies at once??? To be honest, I was kind of freaking out about it.

I finally made the decision that I would disassociate my body from my mind during my twin pregnancy and think of my body as a vessel. Guess what . . . that worked! In-fact anytime I'd start panicking about my size I would say to myself "you are a vessel, you are a vessel". It became my mantra.

Although I coped with my size and weight gain really well during my twin pregnancy, after having my girls was a different story. My postpartum body was literally bruised and battered. My distracting enormous but adorable baby bump had been deflated and I was left with mush, bruising, swollen ankles and healing from a C-section. I had this sadness for my body. I felt so badly for it with the state it was in and at the same time was so grateful for what it had done. It had safely created two humans and carried them for 37 weeks and 4 days. It had been touch and go at times but my body did it!

I made the decision to be kind to my body from now on. Eat healthy foods, indulge here and there and not beat myself up about it. I also wanted to get in shape again, especially knowing I was finished having children. I would take my time. But this time is different. I have simple goals that are for me and no one else. I want to be strong. I am over hurting my back when I pick up a baby. I want to be flexible. No more pulling my neck while reaching for a pacifier that has fallen under a crib. I want to go to my closet and feel good in whatever I put on. No more pulling at waistlines and being limited to leggings (although I will never entirely give up my leggings).

I get it, I am the something mom now with four kids and I am really proud of that. I am so much more confident with my body than I ever have been before. Anytime I start doubting my new curves or war wounds I look around the room and ask myself, how many other people in this room grew two people inside their body at once?

2 Easy Steps to Turn Your Old iPhone Into a Usable iPod Touch

Now that you've made the switch to an iPhone 7, what to do with your old iPhone? While you can always sell it, any profit is dependent on the quality of the phone. A phone that's seen its share of wear and tear likely has a low resale value. Consider turning that gently used iPhone 6S (and 6S Plus, 6 Plus, 6, and 5C) into the equivalent of an iPod Touch, perfect for kids wanting an iDevice to call their own.

To get started using an old iPhone as an iPod Touch, insert a SIM card into the phone - be sure the card is from the same wireless carrier that the phone uses. Connect the iPhone to an Internet-enabled computer with iTunes. The program will activate the iPhone, letting you use it as an iPod Touch.

If the SIM card used in the above activation is still active, you can remove it from the now iPod Touch and place it back in the device that will continue to be used as an iPhone. Or, if the SIM card isn't activated, leaving it in the device is fine, since there's no paid plan connected to it. Make sure to enable a WiFi network, and you're good to use apps and listen to music as before!

A Way to Text With 1 Hand Exists, but You're Not Going to Like It

Typing on the iPhone keyboard can be a real struggle sometimes, especially if your other hand is holding something else. It's why during every iOS update, people hope that Apple will finally do something about it. Turns out the company did create a secret one-handed keyboard, except you can't use it.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith tweeted a photo of what the one-handed keyboard looks like on Oct. 19. He stated that the keyboard has existed since iOS 8, except you can only access it if you jailbreak your iPhone. The keyboard's existence makes sense considering iOS 8 came out when the bigger iPhone 6 Plus was released, making it harder to type on the iPhone with one hand. Take a look at Troughton-Smith's tweet.

If you don't want to jailbreak your iPhone, there is another way to achieve a similar effect. Several keyboard apps, like Gboard from Google, will let you swipe to type, which helps a lot if you have a bigger iPhone like 6, 6S, or 7 Plus.

If You Have a Daughter, Please Spend 3 Minutes Watching This Video For Her Sake

"This is Ellie. She is 5 years old."

That's how this video starts, but if every mom simply substitutes their own daughters' names and ages, it's as if the next three minutes were made just for them.

Because, like Ellie, there are certain things your child knows and some things she doesn't. She knows she's smart, fast, and strong. She knows anything is possible. She doesn't know, however, that the world can be a difficult place for girls. For instance, she doesn't know that:

  • Only 11 percent of practicing engineers and one-fifth of head chefs are female
  • Women make up just 5 percent of the artists in the New York Metropolitan Museum's modern art section
  • By middle school, girls earn higher grades in science but feel less confident than boys
  • By age 11, 30 percent of girls will try a diet
  • 60 percent of girls give up doing something they love because they don't like the way they look

Before you start feeling defeated, the thing to remember is . . . she doesn't know those things yet, and maybe she won't have to.

The video - made to introduce Kazoo, a "new kind of magazine" for girls, on Kickstarter before its launch this Summer - should be mandatory viewing for any parent of a daughter because it reminds us all that, in this ever-changing world, the possibilities for her are endless if we keep it that way.

10 Gingerbread-Scented Beauty Products That Will Spice Up Your Holiday Season

As pervasive as the scent of peppermint may be, it's also quite divisive. If you don't love that minty fresh sensation in your beauty products, there's a good chance that you actively despise it. I am staunchly in the anti-candy-cane camp, which can make me feel a little left out around the holidays. This year, though, I'm happy to report that there is one common fragrance theme we mint refusers can rely on: gingerbread! Keep reading, because I scoured the internet to find the best of the spicy-sweet offerings available this season. You better believe that these delectable delights will make you smell good enough to eat.

Sofia Reyes's Road From Red Carpet Newbie to Pop Princess

Twenty-one-year-old Mexican singer Sofia Reyes is such a staple at Latin award shows, like Premios Juventud and Premio Lo Nuestro, that it's hard to believe before 2014 she hadn't set foot on a big red carpet. Yes, though it seems crazy, it was only a couple of years ago that she was discovered on YouTube, by bachata crooner Prince Royce, making her first official appearance under his music label in 2014. This might shock you even more: though Sofia has had several hits, including "Muevelo" and her duet with Prince Royce "Solo Yo," she has yet to release a full album!

But, TBH, we're not surprised to see Sofia's star power taking over even before her record is out. It takes just one look at the 38 red carpet snaps ahead to see her fashion-forward style and confidence scream: "I'm here to stay."

Internet's New Favorite Dog Experiences the Sheer Bliss of a Puppuccino

Ahh, the sweet taste of Starbucks in the morning. Kenn White and his precious German Shepherd pup know this feeling well, if this Twitter photo is anything to go by. Superamazing dog owner Ken took his puppy to Starbucks this morning to get him a puppuccino, a cup full of whipped cream that he said his dog considers to be his "everything." Even better, Kenn shared the whole experience on Twitter for the world to see, and basically the whole internet is melting down at how adorable this dog is with his morning beverage. We feel you, pup. We do.

NASA's Curiosity Rover Just Discovered an "Egg Rock" Meteorite on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover spotted something "dark, smooth and lustrous" on the red planet in late October. Using a high-tech ChemCam instrument, which fires lasers into objects to inspect their elements, the "golf-ball-size object" was revealed to be an iron-nickel meteorite, commonly found on Earth. "Iron meteorites typically originate as core material of asteroids that melt, allowing the molten metal fraction of the asteroid's composition to sink to the center and form a core," the space agency explained.

Dubbed "Egg Rock" because of its spherical shape, scientists say the meteorite is composed of iron, nickel, and phosphorus and could have possibly fallen from the sky millions of years ago - and the Curiosity rover just found it on Oct. 27. Check out two photos of the iron-nickle meteorite below.

Remember That Time Sofia Vergara Ate a PB&J at the Emmys and Became Your Favorite Person

The Emmy Awards are long, and Sofia Vergara is going to take any chance she has to get a little snack in. That's why, at this year's ceremony when host Jimmy Kimmel started handing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, she reached for one and started eating it without skipping a beat - she even chased the PB&J with an apple juice box.

You might already know this isn't the first time the Modern Family star was spotted eating at the Emmys. Back in 2015, Sofia was caught chomping on popcorn as Jon Hamm made his acceptance speech for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for his role in Mad Men. The video quickly went viral, with Sofia posting a photo of her snack on Instagram.

This time, the internet was, once again, quick to declare their love for Sofia and her eating habits. (It must be noted Sofia shared a snap of a burger feast ahead of the red carpet, where she wore a formfitting Atelier Versace gown.) Check out some of the best reactions below.

If You're Still Holding Onto Clothes That Don't Fit, Here's Why You Might Want to Reconsider

Are you holding onto or buying clothes that don't fit? You might be doing more harm than motivation. Our friends at Shape share how holding onto your "maybe someday" clothes might be taking emotional and physical tolls on your body.

You know those jeans you keep folded in your closet that are too tight to button but you swear you'll fit into again someday? You're not alone. Yahoo Style recently surveyed over 1,000 women and found most of us have four or five pieces in our closets that are just like that.

One out of every 10 women (and one out of every seven millennial women) even report they've bought clothes that don't fit but that they hope to squeeze into down the line.

The thing is, holding onto too-tight clothing could be doing a number on your self-esteem. "When the goal size isn't realistic, healthy, and sustainable, the end result could be poorer body image, guilt, and shame when that goal isn't reached," says Samantha DeCaro, Psy.D., the assistant clinical director at The Renfrew Center of Philadelphia. (See also: The Science of Fat Shaming)

Dieting and working out like a maniac before your friend's wedding so you can squeeze into that *one*dress can backfire if it doesn't zip on the big day. Eventually, that lack of self-love could lead to serious issues with food.

Here's why: "Holding onto clothes that don't fit sends the clear message to yourself that your body isn't acceptable the way it is," DeCaro says. "This kind of negative self-talk only promotes shame, and shame can be a powerful fuel for an eating disorder and other self-destructive cycles." Depression and social anxiety, for instance, could be right around the corner.

Maybe you've convinced yourself it's OK to hold onto those jeans or that dress from college since they motivate you to get fit. That way of thinking seems logical, but it still suggests there's something wrong with your current shape. And that's a problem. "Motivational strategies should never involve shaming the body you have right now," DeCaro says. (One woman shares her powerful story: Losing and Regaining 100 Pounds-Twice-Taught Me to Love My Body.)

A better approach is to find motivation in the way eating healthfully or hitting the gym makes you feel, rather than the number on a clothing tag, DeCaro says. And if those clothes in your closet are bringing you down, toss 'em. "Those reminders, more often than not, make us feel worse about ourselves," says Karen R. Koenig, a psychology of eating psychotherapist, author, and blogger. "Our best bet is accepting our bodies as they are now and working toward making them healthier, not slimmer."

Kate embellished her number with a ruby pin, a cranberry suede clutch, and matching heels. A Quick Lesson on Why Sugar Skull Makeup Is Actually Not Offensive

The following story was originally published on Salt Spell Beauty.

Recently, sugar skull makeup was banned by a university in Canada - just one of many costumes deemed offensive by the school, alongside blackface and women being molested by Donald Trump and Bill Cosby, to name a few. This story was reported on by the Daily Mail and, to our horror, a photo of us and our work at last year's Día de los Muertos celebration was the leading image for the globally-circulated article.

The Daily Mail article mentioned above, which used photographer Triatan Savatier's photograph of us at last year's Día de los Muertos Celebration in San Francisco.

Here's why we don't belong on that list (much less deserve to be the face of it) - We are Andrea Ortega Costigan and Mariana McGrath, two Mexican-American makeup artists living in San Francisco and the founders of Salt Spell Beauty. Makeup is our medium, and faces are our canvas. Our work does not belong in a roundup of "culturally offensive" Halloween costumes. We understand why a Canadian university and a British media outlet might miss the nuances of why that is, so we broke it down for you:

  • Sugar skulls are a hallmark of Día De Los Muertos, a Mexican holiday celebrated around the world on November 1st, All Souls' Day - not Halloween.
  • The purpose of Día de los Muertos is to celebrate and honor friends and family who have passed away; it's a holiday that with roots that go as far back as the Aztec empire.
  • The holiday is marked by families making ofrendas in their homes to the deceased, surrounding their photo with flowers, their favorite food, and calaveras (aka sugar skulls).
  • This Mexican national holiday is one of reverence, remembrance and ritual; it's one day of the year where family gathers to look back on those who have graced our lives and left us for the next.

Cultural appropriation seems to be the buzzword of 2016, and with good reason. There are lots of people doing offensive things that pick and choose the "cool" parts of any given minority culture and adopt them for the night, only to toss that culture back into society's margins the next day. That is 100% wrong.

Here's the kicker, though: It's not cultural appropriation if it's your own culture. (Talking to you, Daily Mail and Canadian university.) As Mexican-American makeup artists, sugar skull makeup is our way of celebrating loved ones through what we do best - beauty. In fact, we love it so much that we do #sevendaysofsugar every year, showcasing a week of intricate calavera makeup looks on ourselves to mark the holiday. We take that sugar skull costume everyone was rocking for Halloween to whole new levels, incorporating jewels, flower petals, heirlooms and a little bit of our own magic. We begin the creative process, which can take hours on end, with a dedication to someone or something who has inspired the look. We do it to honor the dead, celebrate their legacy, and remember their lessons. This is our art, our heritage and our spiritual tribute.

And guess what? Even if you're not Mexican, we say go ahead and do that sugar skull makeup for your costume party. We hope you're doing one for Día de los Muertos today. (And we hope you tag it with #sevendaysofsugar.) All we ask is that you understand the meaning behind it, you take a little slice of the Mexican way, and you remember the people in your life who have passed on to the next. May the sugar skull art that you create in their honor aide them in their spiritual journey.

This 7-Year-Old Girl With Cancer Asking For the World's Prayers Is Going to Break You

"Hi everyone," starts 7-year-old Ava Bright Lee - who was diagnosed with biphenotypic leukemia at age 5 - in the sweetest voice you've ever heard. The next 16 seconds that follow her greeting are going to rip you to pieces.

Ava, whose family has been waiting to find out if she'll be able to receive a haploidentical stem cell transplant, has a PET scan today that will determine that final decision. If there are any tumors in her body, doctors can't proceed with the transplant and she will be taken home on palliative measures immediately. And this is why the adorable little lady filmed a video asking for prayers - so that all of the people in the whole world can back her with their positive vibes.

"I was wondering if you could, um, pray for me," Ava says in the video. "My phone ran out of space so you miss her signature 'Thank you. Bye Bye,'" wrote Ava's mom in a post to the Team Brighter Days Facebook page, which she runs for her daughter. "But know that she is thankful and hopeful and sad and terrified all at once."
