This Story of a Vietnam Vet and His Pit Bull Is the Sweetest Thing You'll Read Today
In the business of animal adoption, it can sometimes be difficult to tell who is really rescuing whom. In the story of Ed Zyer and Polly, it's clear they truly rescued each other.
Polly, a pit bull-pointer mix, was set to be euthanized if she failed to find a home in 10 days. Zyer, a Vietnam veteran, had also been experiencing his share of hardships, battling post-traumatic stress disorder and struggling with symptoms while on medication. After a doctor recommended Zyer give a service dog a try, he and his girlfriend headed to a PetSmart adoption event where fate introduced him to Polly. The pair's immediate connection was obvious - Zyer's girlfriend described their first meeting as being impossible to believe if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes. "Polly wandered over to every single other dog like she was saying goodbye to them, then came over and sat right next to Ed." Polly and Ed successfully completed service dog training together, and have been inseparable ever since.
Ed credits Polly in his strides toward PTSD recovery, specifically citing her ability to curb his anger and road rage. "In my Jeep, when I start screaming and yelling, she'll stick her head on my shoulder and lick my ear and it stops me right there," Zyer said. "PTSD is a pretty rough disease. You have a lot of time on your hands, and there's no one around, and with the help of a dog, it distracts me." Ed recommends all veterans explore the option of therapy dogs, calling them "amazing companions."
This upcoming weekend is the perfect time to find your own animal rescue soulmate. PetSmart Charities is participating in National Adoption Weekend (Sept. 16-18) with adoption events in PetSmart stores across the country, as well as celebrating seven million adoptions and counting. Be sure to share your adopted pet stories by posting photos using the hashtag #iadopted!
Please Don't Try to Give Your Kid the Childhood You Never Had but Always Wanted
Are you trying to live vicariously through your kids? Are you trying to give your kids the childhood your parents never gave you, so by default you're automatically the better parent? You might want to reevaluate. Our friends at YourTango share the negative affects this parenting style has on your children.
It's going to be a bummer one day when you release that child into polite society someday.
You love your kids. Your spouse loves your kids. Their teachers love your kids. Your friends, family and coworkers all love your kids. The whole lot of us love your kids even if we've never met them.
Why not, right? They're partially made out of you, and that means that not only are they the best but they deserve the best. The second point is how they differ from you - they DESERVE better or at least more.
Maybe you didn't get that Easy Bake Oven in 1976 even though it wasn't that expensive, so your kid is gonna get everything she wants because you have a f*cking credit card and are humiliated by the idea of her ever having the chance to b*tch about you to a therapist.
And that's just it, right? You want to be better than your folks. And not just a little better -you want to be so much better that your parents actually go our of their way to both apologize for the half-ass job they did and praise you for the miracle work you've done exclusively because of the force of your will - and because you deserve it.
Along the way to outshining mom and dad in every possible way, you might be creating a complete assh*le of a child.
It's not entirely your fault. In our lifetimes, we've mostly gone from a people of evolution to one of revolution. Something, something computers. The words "best" and "epic" and "perfect" are somehow used without a hint of hyperbole. Some Facebook dad, who is somehow even better at crafts than you are at watching TV, has made you feel like a real pile of used butts for your lack of bespoke costuming. Please see below.
Further, given there's no meaning of life beyond the biological drive to progress through procreation, it's pretty natural you want your seed to have cool stuff, contented success and to not be torn literal limb from metaphorical limb by some very real predator. I acknowledge and congratulate you on your fruitful endeavors; you're a real credit to this organization.
However, constantly rolling over for your kids is making them assh*les and it's making you look like an assh*le. We can't stop tripping over ourselves to both rage against and acknowledge "privilege" in all of its real and imagined contexts, yet a large swath of you are creating another entitled class with your inability to say "no."
Maybe I live in peak entitled assh*le kid in New York's Upper West Side. Maybe I'm remembering some imaginary time when kids were respectful. Maybe I'm putting too much weight on the times I go to the airport and see a kid old enough to know better quirking out at the parent she's traveling with.
There are a few really easy reasons to say "yes" when you should say "no." "Yes" is expedient. "Yes" because your kid, who is around 50 percent exactly like you, deserves it. "Yes" because your hard-ass parents defaulted to "no."
Life coaches and therapists and feminist advice-givers have spent the last couple of decades advocating women say (and very much mean) "no" when they're overwhelmed. Your kids can bully you and it's generally because you put them in a position to do so.
Spoiling your kids is likely more than indulging them in stuff or the occasional public impudence. You'll have to forgive Old Man Participation Trophy for two shakes. Research suggests kids with too much self-esteem are just as likely to bully as kids with not enough self-esteem. While the study doesn't say too many hugs may be as bad as not enough hugs, best to hit that Goldilocks zone just right to be safe.
I really don't give two toots in a sandstorm if your kids are jerks. I can pretend I'm on a phone call like I do when I see plucky 20-somethings soliciting for some charity on the sidewalk. It is, however, going to be a bummer one day when you release that jabroni into polite society.
I have a suspicion Whitney was correct about children being the future and if your goal is for a better future, spoiling your kids is like boxing with a blindfold, one arm tied behind your back, on someone else's peg leg. If you treat your kids (and spouse) with respect and demand they reciprocate, you're not going to have to worry about some angsty roman-a-clef putting you on blast in your twilight years.

Look at These Pictures of Bo and Sunny Obama Next Time You're Feeling Down
While we will certainly miss the entire Obama family after eight classy years in the White House, we feel it's important to shed a light on the real stars, here: Bo and Sunny Obama. The First Family welcomed Bo following President Obama's inauguration, and Bo was later joined by Sunny in 2013. Both presidential pups are Portuguese Water Dogs and, yes, both are insanely adorable. They do look pretty similar, however, one noticeable difference is Sunny's coat is fully black while Bo has patches of white on his chest and legs, which kind of look like legwarmers.
In light of our current political climate, we've rounded up their cutest pictures so that you always have something to refer to when you're in need of a good pick-me-up. Enjoy.
This Is How to Make Pork 31 Different Ways

To prove that theory, there are 31 Latin-inspired recipes ahead. Try your hand at carnitas tacos, Cuban sandwiches, mofongo, and pork chops topped with fruity salsas.
Daylight Saving Time Leaves New Parents Very Confused as to Which of Their Twins Is Older
While many parents were spending the end of Daylight Saving Time trying to figure out how to get their children to adjust to the time difference, Emily and Seth Peterson were trying to figure out which of their newborn twin boys was older. Yes, we know how ridiculous that sounds, but Emily gave birth to Samuel and Ronan on the night that the clocks turned back an hour and things got confusing.
Here's what happened: "Samuel was born 1:39 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6 and by the time Ronan was born 31 minutes later, Daylight Saving Time had ended for the year and the time fell back an hour, making Ronan's official time of birth 1:10 a.m." Although Samuel was born first, his twin brother is technically older! A nurse at Cape Cod Hospital, where the boys were born, said that in over 40 years of work it's the first time she's seen something like this happen.
The boys are going to love this hilarious story when they're older, and let's just hope they figure out a way to handle their age differences!

Snow White Grants This Little Girl Her One Wish and Fairy Tale Ending
In 2013, 4-year-old Alyssa Brown was having a hard time dealing with her dad's absence, as he was deployed in Afghanistan, but when she went to Disneyland with her mom and baby brother, she had no idea that it was really going to be the most magical day. Alyssa got on her knees alongside Snow White at her wishing well, and when the princess asked her what her wish was, there was only one thing on her mind. "Daddy come home," she said adorably. Shortly after, Alyssa put her hands down and saw her incredible father, Scott, right in front of her with open arms.
"I thought that I would just take Alyssa over & we throw coins in, make our wish & Scott would walk out - but Snow White was actually there & ready to leave after her turn of greeting guests," Alyssa's mom Jennifer described on YouTube, writing how the Disney staff went above and beyond to make this such a wonderful surprise and make them feel "like royalty." Jennifer wrote that "later that night as Scott tucked Alyssa into bed, she put both hands on the side of his face & said, 'Daddy, my wish came true.'"
Watch the video above to see the adorable moment. Disneyland really is The Happiest Place On Earth.

21 Gifts For the Pint-Sized Hamilton Fanatic Other Than Tickets to the Show
It hasn't taken long for the Hamilton phenomenon to reach beyond the walls of the theater and into the hearts and minds of children of all ages. Maybe it's the mix of rap, hip-hop, jazz, and ballads that make up the show. Maybe it's the excitement of American history being told in a nontraditional way. But whatever the reason, kids are obsessed - they've even created their own hashtag, #hamilkids, and have sent in videos for the show's producers to edit together.
Since you probably won't (and can't!) get the little ones on your list tickets for the show - the New York production is sold out until November 2017 - we've got more than 20 gifts that will play right into their A. Ham obsession!
2016 May Have Been Kate Middleton's Boldest Year in Style
Kate Middleton's fashion favorites included flirty skirts, pretty blouses, and micro-mini party dresses, then when she became a member of the royal family her wardrobe shifted gears and we saw a clutch of new silhouettes and go-to pieces. Sleek, structured knee-length dresses, cocktail hats, and color block coats have all become part of her trademark look over the past five years. 51 New Emoji Might Be Coming, Including a Breastfeeding One!
Need some good, fun news? The Unicode Consortium has approved 51 emoji finalists for Unicode 10! The new emoji include important, diverse ones, like a person with a hijab and a woman breastfeeding, and some we might need more of in 2017, like a face vomiting and a "shocked face with exploding head."
However, these emoji might not make it to the final list, which requires full approval in May 2017. And if they do, don't expect to see them on your phone till much later in 2017.
The hijab emoji, or as Unicode calls it, "person with headscarf," was first proposed by 15-year old Rayouf Alhumedhi. You can see what it looks like below.
For moms everywhere, a breastfeeding emoji is hopefully arriving as well.
Other emoji include five new animals: a giraffe, sauropod, T. rex, zebra, and hedgehog.
And even a person in a sauna, which was proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.
For now, you can look through the full list here. Hopefully, we find out in May that all of these get to come to our phones!
The Genius Way a Manicure Could Protect You From Date Rape
From a very early age, women learn that no matter how comfortable they are in the moment, they could potentially be in danger. Even if they're having fun at a party or at a bar, and even if the man handing them a drink seems charming, many women have a voice in their heads saying, "Is this safe to drink?" A new product aims to answer that question and make women feel more in control of their safety.
A company called Undercover Colors has created a nail polish that will change colors if it comes in contact with common date rape drugs such as Rohypnol (roofies) or ecstasy. The woman wearing the nail polish just needs to stick her finger in her drink and stir. If these drugs are detected, the lacquer will change colors.
Although the real problem is the pervasive rape culture that convinces men they are entitled to women's bodies, this varnish might be a great tool for women to avoid said men. Hopefully, once this polish makes date rape drugs easily detectable, it will dissuade predators from using them. While this product may not change the horrible reality that one in five women experiences sexual violence in her lifetime, it is a major step for women to gain some control over their safety.
The color-changing innovation was invented by four engineering students at North Carolina State University who wanted to find a way to help their female friends stay safer while dating and going to bars. It's comforting to see that some young men understand the dangers present for women and want to help find solutions.
On Undercover Color's Facebook page, many women are asking when this polish will launch and have been since the information about this product became available on the page in 2014. Every recent inquiry is answered with a comment saying, "Much to come in 2017 . . . be sure to sign up on our website for updates!" We hope means it will be available for purchase soon.

10 Traditions That Bring Families Together on Noche Buena
Growing up, Christmas Day was always the day when my family and I rested from Noche Buena festivities. As many Latino families do, the Christmas holiday is really celebrated on Christmas Eve with presents being opened some time after midnight. The great part about making Dec. 24 our very own is that the celebration is rooted in various special and unique traditions. Here are 10 of those celebratory Noche Buena moments to embrace on the holy night.
1. Villancicos
Of course, you know caroling is indicative of the holiday season, but in most Latin American households, villancicos (or Christmas carols) are a must, sung with the family, before midnight mass.
2. Misa de Gallo
Given that most Latin American countries have a Catholic background, Christmas is celebrated as both the commercialized holiday and the deeply religious one it is. After Christmas Eve dinner, many families go to midnight mass to celebrate Jesus' birth.
3. Lechón Asado + Caja China
While the recipes for how to make the lechón may vary, the truth is that the Caja China is a big part of Noche Buena. Cooking a lechón in a pig roasting box is a popular way to make the main dish for dinner on the night.
4. Coquito
Think eggnog but with a Puerto Rican twist. The alcoholic beverage is a staple over the holidays and how many families toast.
5. Nativity Scene
Many Latino families are anchored in the religious aspects of Christmas. On Noche Buena, or a time leading up to it, they will put out a Nativity scene, which will serve as a reminder that the night celebrates Jesus's birth. In some countries, the baby Jesus figurine is either covered or completely removed until midnight of Christmas Day.
6. Star-Shaped Piñata
In Mexico, kids are encouraged to break a star-shaped piñata on Noche Buena. The game adds a celebratory touch to the night.
7. La Novena de Aguinaldo
Nine days before Noche Buena, certain countries begin a novena, also known as nine nights of prayers. The ninth and final night of La Novena de Aguinaldo on Dec. 24 anchors faith in the religious side of Christmas.
8. Poinsettias
The beautiful red flower was adopted by Mexicans as a Christmas tradition and has since also taken the name of "Flor de Noche Buena." The flower decorates homes and church altars across the world now and is a longstanding symbol that Christmas is near.
9. Dominos
Some traditions have no true roots, other than the fact that they make us all feel good and come together. Playing dominos on Noche Buena is a longstanding part of the night that many Cuban and Puerto Rican families embrace.
10. La Polvora
While many countries have outlawed fireworks, or sparklers, it hasn't put an end to a tradition that many families participate in.

You Probably Never Knew This Important Fact About Karolina Kurkova
Karolina Kurkova's name is likely a familiar one. The model and former Victoria's Secret Angel rose to fame in the early '00s, and since then, she has been a mainstay in the fashion industry, now sitting front row at big-name shows. But one fact you might not know about the tall, gorgeous blonde? She's also a military wife, and she is passionate about helping other military families as well.
"My husband is a former Marine," she told POPSUGAR Fashion as we sat down for a lunch celebrating a special Veterans Day episode of Style Code Live, which she appears on. "Once you're a Marine, you're always a Marine. He joined when he was 17 and did two tours in Iraq. It's a very important part of his life."
This year, Karolina had the idea to give back, working with the Amazon show to recruit other military wives for makeovers.
"I said, 'Why don't we team up and make somebody special for the day?' Ask people to submit videos of their moms, their friends who don't have time for themselves. Things we maybe take for granted - getting a manicure, a pedicure, getting your hair cut, getting a massage."
At the lunch, a military wife named Jen was the guest of honor, and as Karolina welcomed her, she couldn't help but tear up.
"She's basically a single mom," she told us, before introducing a newly made over Jen to the room. "Her husband has been with the United States Coast Guard for 16 years. He sometimes is away for two or three months at a time. The only way he can communicate with his wife and children is by email."
While granting makeovers to every military family is probably impossible, Karolina does have an idea for what we can do to show our appreciation.
"I think a lot of the time it's acknowledgment," the model said. "Saying thank you. For my husband, that always means the most. They are giving their lives, they're sacrificing their family."
Scroll through to see some shots from the lunch and the Veterans Day episode, then tune in for Style Code Live at 9 p.m. EST.

Do This at Every Meal to Start Losing Weight Immediatley
In order to lose weight, you need to eat less. It sounds so simple, yet the reason our bellies are overflowing out of our jeans is because we overeat at every meal. Here's a simple trick to help you eat less without missing out on your favorite foods so you still feel satisfied.
Sit down with your plate or bowl of food - be sure you're actually hungry! - and stop eating when you are 80-percent full. What does 80-percent full mean? Think of it as about a six on the hunger scale: satisfied but not so full that you're tired or so overly stuffed that your belly hurts. This will not only help you eat fewer daily calories, but if you've been suffering form constant belly bloat, this could be the cure!
Eat slowly and stay focused on how your stomach feels after each bite. Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition suggests that you can even take a 10-minute break halfway through your meal to assess whether you should continue eating more or be done.
Now the hardest part about this is to actually stop eating once you reach this point of being 80-percent full. Get the food out of your sight immediately. Don't push the plate away and keep talking with your lunch date or go back to working on your computer. If the food is there, you'll feel too tempted to start picking at it. Wrap it up and put it in the fridge for later, give it to someone else, or just throw it away. Don't feel bad - it'll do better in the compost than in your belly!

If You're Looking to Be Healthier in 2017, Start With These 10 Tips Now
"I want to eat healthier" is a common goal we all share, so here are 10 changes you can make to your diet to help you feel more energetic and less bloated and to support your immune system and your weight goals. Don't feel like you need to make every one of these changes all at once. Choose one or two that seem the most doable, stick with those for a week or two, and make the other changes as you feel ready.
- Eat veggies at every meal: If you only eat veggies at dinner time, this tip is for you! Include veggies at every meal, even breakfast. Try mashed beans in your oatmeal or cucumber in your smoothie. And instead of snacking on processed carbs like crackers, go for carrot chips to satisfy crunchy, salty cravings.
- Include protein, fiber, and healthy fats at every meal: This is the magical trifecta to help you feel full and satisfied and to stabilize blood sugar levels. Choose lean proteins, whole grains, produce, and legumes for fiber and avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil for healthy fats.
- Have one huge salad as a meal once a day: Whether it's a quinoa and black bean mason jar salad for lunch or a roasted butternut squash and kale salad for dinner, eating a salad for one meal not only helps you get your share of fiber and veggies, but since it's low in calories, it'll help you lose or maintain weight.
- Make lunch your biggest meal: Consuming more calories midday than at breakfast or dinner ensures you have enough time to burn all those calories. Think of lunch as about 40 percent of your total daily calories.
- Eat until you're 80 percent full: Down with the clean plate club! Instead of putting the fork down when your plate is empty, eat slowly, and pay close attention to how your belly feels so you can stop eating when you're satisfied but not stuffed.
- Go vegan once a week: To encourage you to eat veggies, fruits, legumes, and whole grains, pick one day a week to go vegan. Skipping meat, dairy, and eggs with allow you to focus on eating all those plant-based foods experts are always telling us to eat more of.
- Swap artificial and processed sweeteners for natural sources: Studies show eating artificially sweetened foods and beverages makes you feel more hungry, so you'll end up eating more total calories. As for refined white sugar, the more we eat it, the more we crave it - sugar addiction is real! Plus studies show eating sugar actually ages you and has been linked to cancer, liver damage, heart failure, and other serious conditions. It can also make you feel bloated and foggy-headed. Avoid the obvious culprits such as candy, desserts, and soda, and also avoid processed foods, as these contain tons of hidden sugars. When sweet cravings strike, go for fresh or dried fruit or these healthy dessert recipes.
- Be consistent about meal planning: Choose one day a week where you can devote a few hours to plan, shop, and prep meals and snacks for the week. You'll not only save time and money, but you're more likely to stay on the healthy path once you have that intention set for the week.
- Put down the salt shaker: Too much sodium not only affects your blood pressure, but it can also damage your organs and tissues and cause that bloated feeling that leaves you feeling sluggish and uncomfortable. Aim for no more than 2,400 mg a day (under 1,500 mg is even better) by avoiding processed foods that are high in sodium - make sure to read the labels because even bread, dressings, and sauces can contain obscene amounts. And don't reach for the salt shaker out of habit. Season your food with fresh herbs or garlic instead. Also go for unsalted nuts and seeds and the butters made from them.
- Indulge once a day: Don't give any foods up completely. Denying yourself the bites you crave can backfire, causing you to feel deprived, resulting in bingeing and feeling depressed. So make a point to keep yourself happy and your cravings satisfied by allowing a small treat every day, such as a square of dark chocolate or a small glass of wine.

The Wellness Trend From Japan You Need to Know About
The latest wellness trend to hit the US comes from Japan - but it's not a product, or a pill, or a kind of food . . . it's an experience. And if you live in a city, this experience can be transformative.
Meet forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, which actually has nothing to do with a bathtub. The concept? Just spend time in a forest, and breathe in the fresh air. Seriously, it's that simple. And it's going to help your body in more ways than one. In fact, it's been practiced in Japan since the 1980s for its medical and mental benefits.
Got Anxiety? Here's How to Deal
While a trip outside into a peaceful wooded area might sound appealing enough on its own, forest bathing advocates tout its legitimate healing power, like relieving stress and improving physical health. And not only does being in the presence of nature promote a sense of calm, but breathing in forest air can be more than refreshing; the phytoncides - essential oils from wood - in the air from the trees are antimicrobial and can boost your immune system and might even prevent cancer, according to a 2007 study.
Trees produce these phytoncides to protect themselves from rotting, or being eaten by insects or animals, and apparently this organic compound can help humans, too. Another study showed that "data indicate[d] that phytoncides significantly enhance human NK activity," - "NK" meaning natural killer cells, or cells in your body that fight tumors and cancer.
A 2010 medical paper took a look at studies across 24 forests in Japan, examined shinrin-yoku's affect on health, and found that "forest environments promote lower concentrations of cortisol, lower pulse rate, lower blood pressure, greater parasympathetic nerve activity, and lower sympathetic nerve activity than do city environments," and noted that more research will be dedicated to "forest medicine" as a form of preventative medicine.
The New York Department of Environmental Conservation cited multiple studies that showed forest bathing and simply spending time in nature can improve the immune system, lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve mood, increase ability to focus (including in children with ADHD), accelerate recovery from illness or surgery, increase your energy level, and improve sleep. A small study in 1998 also showed that forest bathing can effectively help diabetic patients.
Like earthing and grounding, using forest bathing as a form of therapy is an all-natural, low-cost way to release tension and balance your body out. And aside from the plethora of benefits for your brain and body, it's always a nice escape to get away from the city if that's where you spend the bulk of your time.
Can't make it to the woods this weekend? Try visiting park in your area, or diffuse some forest-scented natural oils while meditating at home (balsam fir and Japanese cypress might make you feel like you're really there!).

Adorable 4-Year-Old Girl Honors Her Late Mother in Her Wedding Dress
Nora Davis was just a toddler when her mother Amber passed away from cervical cancer. Now, one year after her death, 4-year-old Nora is honoring her mother in the most adorable, heartfelt way possible: by wearing her mother's wedding gown for a photo shoot. But the plan to have Nora photographed in her mother's dress was thought out before she passed away.
Amber's close friend and owner of My Three Arrows Photography, Heidi Spillane, said that Amber came up with the plan for the photo shoot after she was diagnosed. "Nora was so excited to put on Mommy's fancy wedding dress and be photographed at her parents wedding venue," Heidi wrote on Facebook. "I can remember the day Amber texted me a picture of her little girl in her mom's wedding dress and we started planning. Amber, photographing this session without you was never in the plan but we felt you there, smiling and so proud of your sweet girl."
Last month, Heidi and the Davis family planned the photo shoot incorporating many emotional cues from Nora's parents wedding. Not only did Nora wear the dress her mom wore during her February 2011 wedding, she had her hair done by the same stylist, posed with the bouquet, and even wore her mom's rings. When Nora is all grown up she'll be able to look back at the photos and smile knowing that she was able to wear her mother's wedding dress at just 4 years old.
Although this sounds like it may have been an emotionally painful photo shoot for Nora and her father, Derek, Amber's sister, Adrianne Blackwater, said it was more of a happy time. "That mother-daughter bond, there is nothing else like it," she said. "I think Amber wanted something special for her. Nora enjoyed her day of being a little princess."

New Balance Comes Under Fire For What Many Perceive As the Company's Full Support of Trump
In light of recent comments showing support for President-elect Trump's opposition of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), New Balance is quite literally coming under fire from sneakerheads everywhere. The controversy started yesterday after Wall Street Journal reporter Sara Germano tweeted out the following statement from New Balance's VP of public affairs.
New Balance: "The Obama admin turned a deaf ear to us & frankly w/ Pres-Elect Trump we feel things are going to move in the right direction"
- Sara Germano (@germanotes) November 9, 2016
After Sole Collector shared the news on its Twitter feed, followers started to tweet photos of themselves burning their New Balance sneakers in protest.
@SoleCollector @newbalance good to know. I made a little bonfire tonight :) http://pic.twitter.com/yOdCTbQgac

@SoleCollector @newbalance http://pic.twitter.com/6dROPnmYdm
- Jean Ralphio (@MMArtinitus) November 10, 2016
It's important to note that Sole Collector's initial tweet on the issue may have led many to believe that New Balance was taking a wholly supportive stance on President-elect Trump. The company's comments were specifically about TPP, a proposed trade deal between the U.S. and 11 Pacific Rim nations, negotiated by the Obama administration. If passed, it would be the largest regional trade agreement in history and would strengthen ties between the strategic countries and, most notably, lower tariffs between them. Opponents of the TPP, who include President-elect Trump, Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton, say the TPP would result in the loss of thousands of jobs in the manufacturing industry here in the US, amongst other concerns.
Of all the big-name sneaker brands, New Balance is the last to carry a "Made In USA" label, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the company would have a position on the TPP. While a majority of New Balance shoes are made abroad, 25 percent of New Balance shoes sold in the U.S. are made in one of the company's New England factories, where more than 1,300 people are employed. This results in about four million pairs of New Balance sneakers being made stateside on a yearly basis.
When asked to clarify its position, New Balance issued the following statement to POPSUGAR:
As the only major company that still makes athletic shoes in the United States, New Balance has a unique perspective on trade in that we want to make more shoes in the United States, not less. New Balance publicly supported the trade positions of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump prior to Election Day that focused on American manufacturing job creation and we continue to support them today.
We believe in community. We believe in humanity. From the people who make our shoes to the people who wear them, we believe in acting with the utmost integrity and we welcome all walks of life. Since 1906, we have carved our own path in being passionately committed to making things at our five factories in New England, even when nobody else did. New Balance and our thousands of employees around the world constantly strive to better our local communities. We always have and we always will.
When pressed further, New Balance declined to comment, but told Buzzfeed that is not interested in "getting involved in the politics of presidential elections," and that the comments previously reported were only in relation to TPP.
