This Story of a Vietnam Vet and His Pit Bull Is the Sweetest Thing You'll Read Today
In the business of animal adoption, it can sometimes be difficult to tell who is really rescuing whom. In the story of Ed Zyer and Polly, it's clear they truly rescued each other.
Polly, a pit bull-pointer mix, was set to be euthanized if she failed to find a home in 10 days. Zyer, a Vietnam veteran, had also been experiencing his share of hardships, battling post-traumatic stress disorder and struggling with symptoms while on medication. After a doctor recommended Zyer give a service dog a try, he and his girlfriend headed to a PetSmart adoption event where fate introduced him to Polly. The pair's immediate connection was obvious - Zyer's girlfriend described their first meeting as being impossible to believe if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes. "Polly wandered over to every single other dog like she was saying goodbye to them, then came over and sat right next to Ed." Polly and Ed successfully completed service dog training together, and have been inseparable ever since.
Ed credits Polly in his strides toward PTSD recovery, specifically citing her ability to curb his anger and road rage. "In my Jeep, when I start screaming and yelling, she'll stick her head on my shoulder and lick my ear and it stops me right there," Zyer said. "PTSD is a pretty rough disease. You have a lot of time on your hands, and there's no one around, and with the help of a dog, it distracts me." Ed recommends all veterans explore the option of therapy dogs, calling them "amazing companions."
This upcoming weekend is the perfect time to find your own animal rescue soulmate. PetSmart Charities is participating in National Adoption Weekend (Sept. 16-18) with adoption events in PetSmart stores across the country, as well as celebrating seven million adoptions and counting. Be sure to share your adopted pet stories by posting photos using the hashtag #iadopted!
Cat With No Eyes Picks His Own Best Friend From the Shelter
This is Martin. Reddit user Marmie_McMom adopted him after a surgery that left him with no eyes. But when he came home, he unfortunately didn't get along with the cat already in the house. Instead of giving up on the situation, Marmie_McMom took Martin to a shelter to let him pick out a brand-new best friend, and that's where Mr. Pinkerton came in. The two cats met, and after bumping noses, they quickly settled into a lasting friendship. Scroll through to see pictures of the pair together - it's one of the sweetest rescue stories we've ever heard.
The 10 Unexpected Things I Won't Miss About Breastfeeding
Don't get me wrong - I love being able to breastfeed my baby. I'm well aware at how lucky I am that it came (somewhat) naturally to us and how fortunate I am to have support - from my husband, from friends, and co-workers - to keep it up even after returning to work. I also won't deny the incredible bond it's given me to my daughter. I cherish our time together and can guarantee that, when it ends, I'll be an emotional wreck. But I'll also be a teensy bit relieved. Here are just a few things I won't be sad to say farewell to when it comes time to hang up my milk makers (a term I won't miss, either).

It's Not Adriana Lima's Sexiest Dresses That'll Catch Your Eye - It's the Way She Poses in Them
Brazilian model Adriana Lima might have walked the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show wearing tiny lingerie for the past 16 years, but in real life, she doesn't always go all out, choosing instead to show off a calculated amount of skin at red carpets, parties, and TV appearances.
More times than none, she opts to show off her muscular legs with a high slit - and we mean high, the kind that involves wearing no undergarments. Other times, she chooses to reveal her rock-hard abs with crop tops and bralettes. And in a few instances, she has walked the red carpet in low-back numbers that show a little more skin as she walks away. Whatever it is, Adriana nails the right balance, still looking elegant. See for yourself by scrolling through her sexiest looks through the past 11 years.

Here's How That Fruitcake Frappuccino From Starbucks Really Tastes
Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Anna Monette Roberts
In the spirit of the holidays, Starbucks introduced a Fruitcake Frappuccino for a limited time this December. Since we know you're bursting at the seams with curiosity about how it tastes - does it really taste like your grandma's fruitcake? - we tried it for you.
First things first: what's in it? The blended beverage is a Hazelnut Crème Frappuccino blended with dried fruit and spiced with cinnamon and topped with whipped cream, caramel dots, and a sprinkle of matcha. If your nearest Starbucks location doesn't seem to have the Frappuccino if you order it by its name, don't fret. Just list out all of the ingredients, and they'll be able to make it for you anyway. Depending on what type of dried fruit your Starbucks has (mine was out of blackberries and offered strawberries), the flavor might vary slightly.
Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Erin Cullum
The most notable part of the drink is the sweetness - it's extremely sugary and has no coffee or espresso to round it out. Our tasters agree that it doesn't actually taste like fruitcake, but, if we're being honest, that's a good thing. Instead, it tastes like a fruity, creamy milkshake with caramel drizzled on top. We don't quite get the hazelnut flavor from the syrup, and the sprinkling of matcha powder on top gets lost in the whipped cream. All in all, we're not too inspired to throw on an ugly Christmas sweater and rush to our closest Starbucks to order one again, but it's by no means the worst Frappuccino we've tried. If you're determined to give this one a try, you have until Dec. 18.

9 Ways to Stop Living the Lazy-Girl Fashion Life and Get Your Act Together
If there's one thing in this world I excel at, it's being lazy. I've waited for the laundry basket to overflow before throwing clothes in the wash. I've canceled party plans in favor of sitting on the couch watching Netflix. I snooze my alarm, chill out in my towel, and have perfected the art of picking things up with my feet. (I could probably text with my toes by now, but I'm too lazy to try.)
I didn't see any of this an issue until recently, when I realized - BAM! - my laziness had somehow creeped its way into my wardrobe. Around last Fall, I had adopted the ultimate lazy girl motto, comfort over everything, but looking back at photos, it dawned on me: comfy ain't always cute.
No matter what they call them, joggers are probably just sweatpants. Oversize sweaters will always be baggy. And some outfits just look better with heels.
I'm trying to remind myself of the real reason I fell in love with fashion: as a way of expressing myself; it's the message I'm sending out to world. Do I want really want that message to be "Girl who woke up late and threw on the only thing that wasn't wrinkled"? Nope, not really. I'd much rather be polished, professional, and always put-together.
I imagine many women, especially as they grow older, have a hard time letting the lazy girl go, so I compiled some tips I'm using to stay on track. Because while I won't be giving up binge-watching (too many shows, not enough time) or towel chilling (some of my best thinking is done then), it's time to say goodbye and embrace the fierce, fashionable woman I know I can be.
Grinch Fingers Are a Festive (and Controversial) Way to Celebrate the Holidays
When Twitter user BeautyTuts posted a photo of manicure inspiration she liked, she had no idea it would become a source of debate. The makeup maven thought the furry green, ombré nails were cute and the Twitter community responded in a major way.
While some beauty junkies liked the unique idea, others thought it reminded them of a famous grouch - the Grinch from Dr. Seuss's The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. The many tweets that followed were hysterical and people had very strong opinions on the furry talons. Read on to read the comical reactions to the fuzzy digits.

This Is Why 2016 Was a Great Year For Selena Quintanilla Fans
No one can deny that since the untimely passing of Selena Quintanilla 21 years ago in Corpus Christi, TX, her memory and music have remained present. But unlike other years past, 2016 felt defining. This was the year with the most beautiful and remarkable tributes to the late tejano singer.
In the past 12 months, the Latino music community and Selena's old and new fans have been vocal, petitioning big brands to honor their idol and celebrating every win and tribute loudly. Thanks to them, Selena was not only recognized as the top Latino artist of the year at the Latin Billboard Music Awards, but was also included in the list of icons receiving a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2017. And, of course, it goes without mentioning that the singer's MAC Cosmetics collection was a sensation, selling out in mere minutes and causing a frenzy of internet reactions. And that wasn't even all. Keep reading to see 17 moments that made 2016 a great year for Selena's fans.
A night in Canada's busiest ER for drug overdoses: St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver

CBC News recently spent a shift in the emergency department at St. Paul's Hospital to observe the crisis first-hand.
The Craziest Way to Cook Bacon So It's Simultaneously Crispy and Chewy
Bacon is traditionally cooked in an oven, over the stovetop, or in a microwave, but what happens when you air-fry it? Air-what, you may be thinking? Air-frying is exactly as the name sounds. An appliance about the size of a slow cooker contains a drawer with a metal mesh bottom for the food. The appliance blows hot, dry air on food to fry it with little to no oil. This trend took 2016 by storm thanks to celebrity endorsements from Gordon Ramsay, Paula Deen, and Oprah Winfrey, so what's the dang fuss all about? I busted out a Philips Digital Airfryer ($250) and a package of bacon to find out.
Having no clue how to air-fry, I watched a YouTube video on how to air-fry bacon and followed these instructions. However, I ended up with steamed bacon once the cook time was complete. It resembled deli ham more than bacon, and the fat from the bacon turned translucent and gelatinous. Perhaps this is the preferred method to cook bacon in Europe, but for me, I like my bacon crispy. So I cranked up the heat and kept cooking, shaking the basket occasionally and tripling the cook time, until I ended up with perfectly caramelized strips. I'm talking evenly cooked with no burn spots. Bacon never looked better.
But looks can be deceiving; the taste test would reveal the bacon's true tastiness or not. Remarkably, the bacon had a thin, crisp exterior that yielded to a fatty, chewy interior. I've never had bacon quite like this. The bacon also retained its size prior to cooking and did not shrink at all. The cleanup was a breeze too. I poured the extra bacon grease into a dish for later (it too was pure fat with no black char bits that you find when cooking bacon in an oven or on a stovetop) and proceeded to scrub down the drawer, which proved to be an easy feat.
Feeling confident about my air-frying skills, I proceeded to attempt apple chips and failed horribly. I mean, the apple chips burned and stuck into every crevice of the grid bottom. It was a nightmare to clean up with no reward of apple chips at the end. I know there's a learning curve to a new cooking device, so I'll try again. I'm dying to learn how to make french fries and fried chicken. Those will be my next attempts!

This Cop Was Just Doing His Job When He Found His Forever Friend
When Florida police officer Marcus Montgomery posted this picture on Imgur, we think his TL;DR (too long, didn't read) was spot on. He wrote, "humans suck. Leave pups on back porch in cold. He's MINE."
Officer Montgomery was called in to Panhandle Animal Welfare Society to handle some threats the shelter was getting. As he was leaving, however, he stumbled upon what would become his new forever friend. One of the shelter employees told him a litter of puppies had been dropped off the night before and left outside in near-freezing temperatures. Officer Montgomery instantly fell in love with one of them and decided his 4-year-old Pit Bull, Vader, needed a brother.
He brought Kylo Ren home as a gift to his girlfriend, and the rest, as they say, is history.
These Are All the Ways Alton Brown Makes (Perfect) Eggs
It's no secret that Alton Brown has amazing recipes. And when it comes to cooking eggs, he's your go-to source for mastering the perfect techniques for scrambled, poached, over easy - you name it. If you've long been searching for a comprehensive guide to all things eggs, consider this breakdown of how Alton Brown makes his eggs your ultimate cheat sheet. Which one are you most excited to try?
Scrambled: On a Warm Plate
There's a crucial step in Alton's scrambled eggs recipe that doesn't involve ingredients: serving the finished eggs on a warm plate. "Odds are you're going to be serving these on a plate. If so, I strongly suggest you park an ovensafe one in a low oven or in hot water while you're cooking. Cold plates suck the heat right out of food," Alton writes in the recipe.
Over Easy: Cracked in a Cup
It's all about the technique for perfect over-easy eggs, and Alton's how-to for eggs over easy will make sure you get it right every time. His most important tip is, "Never crack eggs directly into a pan - always crack them into a cup or ramekin. It's the only way to make sure they cook evenly, and you can pour them into the pan right where you want them."
Poached: With Vinegar
Alton Brown's poached eggs recipe includes a secret ingredient that many chefs swear by: white vinegar. The vinegar helps the egg whites form around the yolk and prevents them from running all over the place. Alton's other essential trick is to use the "whirlpool" method: use your spatula or spoon to stir the water in one direction until a whirlpool-like effect happens, and then drop your egg gently into the center of the moving water.
Omelet: For a Crowd
Perhaps one of the pioneers of the giant-food trend is Alton Brown's omelet for a crowd. Made by blending 10 eggs, water, salt, and herbs - yes, in a blender - this amplified omelet serves four people. Why waste time making four individual omelets when you could make one and slice it up while it's still warm?
Benedict: Totally Scratch Made
From the "foundation" bread to the hollandaise sauce, Alton Brown's eggs Benedict is truly homemade, and it's entirely worth the effort. Perfect for a Sunday project at home, this recipe takes more than 10 hours (you have to refrigerate the dough overnight) but allows you to skip the brunch lines and create a restaurant-quality breakfast in your own kitchen.
Quiche: As a Crepe
Is it a quiche or a crepe? You be the judge when you make Alton Brown's crepe quiche Lorraine cups. With a filling of traditional-style quiche Lorraine (bacon, cheddar, onion) and a thin crust made from crepe batter, this hybrid egg dish switches things up. The best part is you divvy up the mixture into a muffin tin for individual portions ideal for entertaining.
Don't Feel Guilty Spending Money on These Undergarments - They're Worth It
It's easy to write off undergarments as an "extra," stocking up on pieces only when you need them - and then holding onto those babies for several years. On one hand, it shouldn't matter when and where you bought that lacy pair of booty shorts. Your own underwear is your own business. But when you start thinking of bras and panties as the foundation of your outfit - aka the stuff that makes silky tops or velvet culottes fall just right on your body - it puts things into perspective. Quality is important, even if you have to splurge a little to get it.
So if you're ready to give your underwear drawer a full-on overhaul for 2017, we've gathered up what's worth the investment. Scroll through to find out what to buy and why.
Everything You Need to Know About Toasted Marshmallow Milano Cookies
We prayed to the cookie gods that Toasted Marshmallow Milano Cookies would deliver on their marshmallow-y flavor promise. Spoiler alert: they do! The new cookie by Pepperidge Farm, which will hit Target shelves near you in Jan. 2017 for $4 per bag, are like the classic Milano you already know, but with a layer of marshmallow-flavored icing that leaves you with a s'mores-like taste in your mouth.
POPSUGAR editors eagerly flocked to try the wintertime cookies, and there were resounding "Mmmm"s in the office. "My new favorite Milano!" one taster wrote, while another noted, "Definitely taste the marshmallow flavor. No artificial flavor, and so vanilla-y." A unanimous conclusion from everyone is that these taste reminiscent of S'mores Pop-Tarts in the best way - we're left feeling nostalgic for one of our favorite childhood treats. As Heidi Klum would say, "One day you're in, and the next day you're out." This could not ring more true for clothes we've worn and trends we've tried in 2016. So what exactly are we saying bye to this year? At the top of the list are black shoelace-style chokers and Stan Smiths - items every fashion girl, including us, sported in one Instagram snap or another. Our reasons for saying bye to the 10 items ahead are quite simple: the new year has inspired us to switch things up. The year 2017 may signify a new you, or at the very least, new clothes (let's toast to that).
Based on our own tastes and Spring '17 runway trends, we've compiled a list of items to retire next year. Whether you have been holding on to that jacket for far too many years or are sick of a particular trend, 2017 is the time to begin anew with your style. Give those pieces a break, and then check out the updated alternatives to wear instead.

We Can't Believe We've Never Noticed This Hilarious Harry Potter Detail
We've stumbled across a hilarious detail in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix film you probably haven't noticed before. In this still from the opening, you see Harry holding a newspaper while he sits on a swing. In the movie scene, you don't get a good look at the paper before Harry is interrupted by Dudley and his cronies, and then dementors approach, causing the paper to swirl around the playground. In the movie still, however, we get a better look at the paper.
Seems normal enough. But look closer: the headline on the newspaper? "Balls Judged 'Too Big.'" Yep, we're really mature. Whether this is meant to reference Harry's reckless behavior (classic Gryffindor, am I right?), or it's the result of someone in props with a dirty sense of humor, we love this hidden joke. We also like to think Daniel Radcliffe personally requested this headline.
Update: An eagle-eyed reader spotted one more dirty pun regarding the F.A. Cup (officially called the Football Association Challenge Cup). The paper's mast reads, "Don't miss our fantastic pull-out tomorrow." Yeah, they went there.
Just when we thought we'd read every theory, plot coincidence, and Easter egg from the Harry Potter series.
Kate Middleton and Princess Diana's Twinning Style Moments Might Just Blow Your Mind
When Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement back in October 2010, it was inevitable that the newest member of the royal family would be compared to her mother-in-law, the late Princess Diana. Not only did the two women share the same sapphire engagement ring but also good genes, with their catwalk measurements and photogenic good looks. Over the following six years, Kate's fashion choices have also often been compared to those of Diana - many times because they might simply have worn the same color. However, there are some striking similarities between many of the women's choices - some intentional, and others less so . . .
Unicorn Toast Is Officially a Thing, and It's Damn Near Perfect
Step aside, avocado toast, there's a new sheriff in town, and it's way more magical. Unicorn toast has officially made its debut, just when we thought the perfect breakfast food didn't exist. If your bland bowl of cereal just isn't cutting it every morning, this is the tasty and colorful solution you've been waiting for.
So how do you make these Instagram-worthy creations? Food stylist and photographer Adeline Waugh, who first graced the foodie world with these toasts, said that no artificial dyes are required to accomplish the toast's vibrant hues.
"I've been trying to incorporate red beets into as many creations as possible, ever since I realized that they can turn just about anything into the most ridiculously beautiful shade of hot pink," she told Teen Vogue. "I was using beet cream cheese to make colorful pink toast, and then it occurred to me that I could probably make additional colors of cream cheese using natural ingredients." The photographer prefers to mix freeze-dried strawberry powder into cream cheese for a light pink color, drops of chlorophyll for a light green, and spirulina powder for light blue. The results are perfectly pastel concoctions that smear together on toast for a magical breakfast treat . . . or, let's be real, a snack you can enjoy any time of the day.
Though Adeline is noted as the founder of this enticing toast trend, she has inspired other adventurous, magic-seeking foodies to try it out as well. Keep reading for some of our favorite unicorn toast snapshots, and try out the recipe yourself to give your Instagram a colorful makeover.
All the Times Selena Gomez Has Been a Victim of Ellen DeGeneres's Scares
If you're going on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, you're going to get a good scare. Selena Gomez is one of the many celebrities who can attest to that. Keep scrolling to see all the times she's hilariously been a victim of Ellen's scares, and then check out her performance of "Same Old Love" and discussion of lupus on the show.
How to Keep Lemons Fresh For up to 3 Months
This tip for storing lemons is so easy. Accoring to Food.com, if you refrigerate lemons in a bowl of water, they will keep for up to three months! It sounds insane, but I'd be willing to give it a try. And if you want to extend the life of a lemon even futher, freeze the zest and the juice separately.

I Changed My Dog's Food, and It Changed Her Life
I have made my cat-lady tendencies well-known. What I haven't shared about as much is my other love: my 14-year-old first love, Winnie. She is a sweet old Boxer mix who we rescued from a field 14 years ago and brought home to join our family. While the whole family loves her, she's my dad's best friend.
As can be expected with old age, Winnie's health has started to decline a bit. She can't hear very well, she can't see very well, and she has pretty significant arthritis. However, when any of my young nieces or nephews are around, Winnie tries her hardest to play with them and exerts all the energy she can manage. And while we know she's inevitably going to slow down even more as her days go by, our family couldn't help but see if there was any way we could help keep her as healthy as possible. That's when we learned about Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind for senior dogs.
This dog food comes in two categories, one for seniors over 7 and one for adult dogs. The senior variety is designed to keep old dogs' minds sharp, and the adult variety is more of a protective formula to keep your dogs' minds from aging as rapidly. The food is chock-full of botanical oils that supplement the brain, which encourages it to behave how it did when the dogs were younger.
But would it actually work? Can you actually help keep a dog from aging? I met with Dr. Brian Hare, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at Duke University and all-around dog expert, to discuss my Winnie and see what this food could do for her. He asked me a lot of questions about her behaviors and her life overall and said we should try Bright Mind for 30 days to see if we spotted a difference in anything.
My dad, aka Winnie's bestie, was in for anything to keep his dog happy. So we got the food, and my dad painstakingly measured out the old and new to switch her over properly before she was solidly on Bright Mind.
And then we waited.
I visited Winnie about three weeks into her 30 days, and I immediately noticed a difference. You know how when animals get old their eyes get really milky and cloudy? Winnie's had been that way previously, but after being on Bright Mind, her eyes had cleared up. They'd gone back to being deep brownish black with no cloudiness at all. My mom also said she'd been perkier, which is saying a lot considering she is 14 years old and can't handle much activity.
Thinking maybe the nutritional value in Bright Mind had added to Winnie's overall well-being, I asked Dr. Hare about it. He said, "The thing about Bright Mind is that it nurtures the mind and the body," rather than just helping dogs physically. Because, according to Dr. Hare, when older dogs start to forget their basic commands or routine activities, it's very possibly a mental deterioration rather than a physical one.
It's now been about two months since Winnie's been on Bright Mind, and she's as perky as she was 10 years ago. It's actually pretty incredible to see. So if you've got a senior dog (7 years old or older) whose mind just doesn't seem as sharp, I highly recommend trying Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind for senior dogs. It'll give you your pup back.
