Say Sayonara to These Fashion Items, Because They Didn't Make the Cut For 2017

As Heidi Klum would say, "One day you're in, and the next day you're out." This could not ring more true for clothes we've worn and trends we've tried in 2016. So what exactly are we saying bye to this year? At the top of the list are black shoelace-style chokers and Stan Smiths - items every fashion girl, including us, sported in one Instagram snap or another. Our reasons for saying bye to the 10 items ahead are quite simple: the new year has inspired us to switch things up. The year 2017 may signify a new you, or at the very least, new clothes (let's toast to that).

Based on our own tastes and Spring '17 runway trends, we've compiled a list of items to retire next year. Whether you have been holding on to that jacket for far too many years or are sick of a particular trend, 2017 is the time to begin anew with your style. Give those pieces a break, and then check out the updated alternatives to wear instead.

We Can't Believe We've Never Noticed This Hilarious Harry Potter Detail

We've stumbled across a hilarious detail in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix film you probably haven't noticed before. In this still from the opening, you see Harry holding a newspaper while he sits on a swing. In the movie scene, you don't get a good look at the paper before Harry is interrupted by Dudley and his cronies, and then dementors approach, causing the paper to swirl around the playground. In the movie still, however, we get a better look at the paper.

Seems normal enough. But look closer: the headline on the newspaper? "Balls Judged 'Too Big.'" Yep, we're really mature. Whether this is meant to reference Harry's reckless behavior (classic Gryffindor, am I right?), or it's the result of someone in props with a dirty sense of humor, we love this hidden joke. We also like to think Daniel Radcliffe personally requested this headline.

Update: An eagle-eyed reader spotted one more dirty pun regarding the F.A. Cup (officially called the Football Association Challenge Cup). The paper's mast reads, "Don't miss our fantastic pull-out tomorrow." Yeah, they went there.

Just when we thought we'd read every theory, plot coincidence, and Easter egg from the Harry Potter series.

Kate Middleton and Princess Diana's Twinning Style Moments Might Just Blow Your Mind

When Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement back in October 2010, it was inevitable that the newest member of the royal family would be compared to her mother-in-law, the late Princess Diana. Not only did the two women share the same sapphire engagement ring but also good genes, with their catwalk measurements and photogenic good looks. Over the following six years, Kate's fashion choices have also often been compared to those of Diana - many times because they might simply have worn the same color. However, there are some striking similarities between many of the women's choices - some intentional, and others less so . . .

Unicorn Toast Is Officially a Thing, and It's Damn Near Perfect

Step aside, avocado toast, there's a new sheriff in town, and it's way more magical. Unicorn toast has officially made its debut, just when we thought the perfect breakfast food didn't exist. If your bland bowl of cereal just isn't cutting it every morning, this is the tasty and colorful solution you've been waiting for.

So how do you make these Instagram-worthy creations? Food stylist and photographer Adeline Waugh, who first graced the foodie world with these toasts, said that no artificial dyes are required to accomplish the toast's vibrant hues.

"I've been trying to incorporate red beets into as many creations as possible, ever since I realized that they can turn just about anything into the most ridiculously beautiful shade of hot pink," she told Teen Vogue. "I was using beet cream cheese to make colorful pink toast, and then it occurred to me that I could probably make additional colors of cream cheese using natural ingredients." The photographer prefers to mix freeze-dried strawberry powder into cream cheese for a light pink color, drops of chlorophyll for a light green, and spirulina powder for light blue. The results are perfectly pastel concoctions that smear together on toast for a magical breakfast treat . . . or, let's be real, a snack you can enjoy any time of the day.

Though Adeline is noted as the founder of this enticing toast trend, she has inspired other adventurous, magic-seeking foodies to try it out as well. Keep reading for some of our favorite unicorn toast snapshots, and try out the recipe yourself to give your Instagram a colorful makeover.

If you're going on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, you're going to get a good scare. Selena Gomez is one of the many celebrities who can attest to that. Keep scrolling to see all the times she's hilariously been a victim of Ellen's scares, and then check out her performance of "Same Old Love" and discussion of lupus on the show.

How to Keep Lemons Fresh For up to 3 Months

This tip for storing lemons is so easy. Accoring to Food.com, if you refrigerate lemons in a bowl of water, they will keep for up to three months! It sounds insane, but I'd be willing to give it a try. And if you want to extend the life of a lemon even futher, freeze the zest and the juice separately.

I Changed My Dog's Food, and It Changed Her Life

I have made my cat-lady tendencies well-known. What I haven't shared about as much is my other love: my 14-year-old first love, Winnie. She is a sweet old Boxer mix who we rescued from a field 14 years ago and brought home to join our family. While the whole family loves her, she's my dad's best friend.

As can be expected with old age, Winnie's health has started to decline a bit. She can't hear very well, she can't see very well, and she has pretty significant arthritis. However, when any of my young nieces or nephews are around, Winnie tries her hardest to play with them and exerts all the energy she can manage. And while we know she's inevitably going to slow down even more as her days go by, our family couldn't help but see if there was any way we could help keep her as healthy as possible. That's when we learned about Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind for senior dogs.

This dog food comes in two categories, one for seniors over 7 and one for adult dogs. The senior variety is designed to keep old dogs' minds sharp, and the adult variety is more of a protective formula to keep your dogs' minds from aging as rapidly. The food is chock-full of botanical oils that supplement the brain, which encourages it to behave how it did when the dogs were younger.

But would it actually work? Can you actually help keep a dog from aging? I met with Dr. Brian Hare, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at Duke University and all-around dog expert, to discuss my Winnie and see what this food could do for her. He asked me a lot of questions about her behaviors and her life overall and said we should try Bright Mind for 30 days to see if we spotted a difference in anything.

My dad, aka Winnie's bestie, was in for anything to keep his dog happy. So we got the food, and my dad painstakingly measured out the old and new to switch her over properly before she was solidly on Bright Mind.

And then we waited.

I visited Winnie about three weeks into her 30 days, and I immediately noticed a difference. You know how when animals get old their eyes get really milky and cloudy? Winnie's had been that way previously, but after being on Bright Mind, her eyes had cleared up. They'd gone back to being deep brownish black with no cloudiness at all. My mom also said she'd been perkier, which is saying a lot considering she is 14 years old and can't handle much activity.

Thinking maybe the nutritional value in Bright Mind had added to Winnie's overall well-being, I asked Dr. Hare about it. He said, "The thing about Bright Mind is that it nurtures the mind and the body," rather than just helping dogs physically. Because, according to Dr. Hare, when older dogs start to forget their basic commands or routine activities, it's very possibly a mental deterioration rather than a physical one.

It's now been about two months since Winnie's been on Bright Mind, and she's as perky as she was 10 years ago. It's actually pretty incredible to see. So if you've got a senior dog (7 years old or older) whose mind just doesn't seem as sharp, I highly recommend trying Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind for senior dogs. It'll give you your pup back.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Had a Fashion Moment Every Couple Could Relate To

While Angelina Jolie is one of the most stylish women on the red carpet, that doesn't mean all the characters she plays are up to par. But in her self-directed film, By the Sea, Angelina took on the role of Vanessa, an unbelievably chic woman living in France during the '70s. One fashion item she's always got on hand? A pair of oversize sunglasses.

The importance of the accessory is outlined in Angelina's Nov. 2015 cover feature for WSJ Magazine:

Jolie was equally painstaking about By the Sea's 1970s period wardrobe - including her oversize sunglasses, which [Brad] Pitt's character, Roland, keeps righting for his wife after she tosses them, a lot, onto tables, a mini pas de deux Jolie took from their former marriage. 'Brad hates that I always scratch my glasses,' she said, adding that in the film, the gesture shows that Roland still cares for her character, Vanessa. 'Even when he wants to punch her in the face, he still fixes her glasses!'"

While Angelina and Brad didn't suffer the same troubles as their characters, we love the poetic license Angelina took, turning a simple couple's quirk into a weighty symbol for her movie. Whether you're watching Angelina on screen or on the street, there's no denying the lady looks good in her shades, from aviators to a fierce cat-eye silhouette. Read on for 17 pictures that are pure proof.

Cop's Actions Shock a Mom Who Was Pulled Over Because Her Foster Kids Were Not in Car Seats

When a foster mom was called to take in a set of brothers, they arrived with the clothes on their backs - no extra clothes, coats, toys, or car seats. So when she was pulled over with two of the boys in the back seat of the car the next morning by a Tennessee State Trooper, his first question was unsurprisingly, "Why are the two boys in the back seat not in car seats?"

After she explained her situation, rather than give her a ticket, she says Officer Tidwell was kind to her and the boys. "He asked me for my phone number. I gave it to him," the mom wrote in a post on her personal Facebook, which the Tennessee Highway Patrol page then shared.

His wife called me and asked about the boys. This morning Officer Tidwell met me in Waverly, him and his wife had purchased gifts for the boys. Not just the two boys in the back seat but, their older brother too. I can not thank him enough for the kindness he has shown these three boys. I never asked him for anything. He and his wife acted out of the kindness of their hearts.

Although the mother was grateful for the generosity he showed her and the boys specifically, she's sharing his actions for a much larger reason. "He showed these boys that there are very nice cops out there and I hope he has left a lasting impression on them that cops are good. The boys has been telling everyone that 'cops are nice.' He has made their day. You hear way too much negative stuff nowadays, so here is some good news for you all."

Paula Deen's Transformative Way to Scramble Eggs

You will never make scrambled eggs another way after learning Paula Deen's method. When I spoke to the Southern chef a few weeks back, she told me her unique method of scrambling eggs:

"We can't operate without Vidalia onions out here. I like to fry the onions and mix with my scrambled eggs. I use water instead of milk. Water makes them lighter. Water doesn't make it as tough as milk. I cook them on low, and use half bacon drippings and half butter, so you have the best of both worlds. I like to put a lid on my scrambled eggs, turning them all at once. If you cook them too fast, it makes them not so good."

So, geared up with bacon grease, Vidalia onions, my favorite salted butter (Kerrygold), and some eggs, I got to work. The results tasted more delicious than I could have imagined. Curious about how to re-create this at home? Here's some step-by-step instruction.

3 Things People With Small Kitchens Do Every Day

As someone who has lived in a tiny studio apartment (with another person!) and loves to cook, I've picked up on a few things that make dealing with a small kitchen easier. While I hope to one day have the huge kitchen of my dreams with an island and countertop space galore, I'll have to make the most out of what I have now. To make my life easier, I've learned to embrace these three everyday habits that can make all the difference between a stressful experience in the kitchen and a joyous one. Keep these tips in mind if you, too, are aiming to make the most of your small space.

1. Always clear your countertops completely before cooking.

Cooking should be therapeutic and not stressful, especially when you've got minimal space. Before you embark on trying a new recipe or starting dinner, make sure all your counters and space surrounding your stove are completely cleared of dishes, clutter, and even crumbs. Starting with a clean slate makes the cleanup process later on much more manageable, and cooking in a tidy environment is key.

2. Clean and put away dishes immediately after cooking.

You know what becomes an enormous eyesore in any kitchen, but particularly a small one? A big pile of dirty dishes. The most important rule to live by is clean and put away dishes immediately after using them so that your sink stays clear and clean. If you have a dishwasher, even better. Keeping your sink clean will encourage you to keep your whole kitchen clean, too.

3. Give everything a designated home, and keep it there.

When you're working with limited storage space, it's crucial to be strategic about where you put everything and that you keep it in its place. Make sure every item in your kitchen, from your coffee pot to your slow cooker to your wine glasses, has a "home," and put it back every time you're done using it. This will not only keep your cabinets and drawers organized, but it will also ensure nothing gets forgotten about. Keeping all your essentials in their own place will also prevent you from overbuying nonessentials like extra mugs and items you don't have the space for.

Michelle Obama and Oprah Share This Major Style Secret

Michelle Obama gave her final interview as First Lady to none other than Oprah. The duo sat comfortably in the White House, where Michelle offered what are sure to be memorable remarks. For now, there's only a brief clip of the footage, but the entire conversation is set to air on CBS Dec. 19. If that's not enough to excite you, we took a moment to zoom in on Michelle and Oprah's outfits.

Presumably, the pair kept coordination in mind, Michelle opting for a Preen midi with velvet embroidery, stripes, and sheer panels, while Oprah's teal shift was the more minimal look in the room. Oprah could have slipped into simple black pumps and diamond earrings, but instead she amped up her dress with emerald gemstone jewels and purple suede heels.

The foundation of her outfit was a piece by Brandon Maxwell, one of Michelle's favorite new designers. He's created her plenty of power looks and one evening gown for the FLOTUS, so it should come as no surprise he was thrilled to customize something for Oprah:

"Oprah! This is special to me for so many reasons. I had the pleasure of creating a custom dress for @oprah for her sit down at The White House with First Lady @michelleobama, where she gave her final interview as First Lady Of The United States. Two very inspirational women in my life. Make sure to watch Monday night on @cbs!"

Troian Bellisario Wore 1 Fancy-Shmancy Wedding Dress You Didn't See

Troian Bellisario might have gone full-on boho when she exchanged her vows, opting for a flowy white Cortana gown and a crown, but after the ceremony, she switched things up. The Pretty Little Liars star just shared a snap of her gold-sequined dancing dress: a custom Maureen Patricia Bridal number with an open back and a small train that trailed to the ground behind her.

Though the maxi was quite glamorous, Troian went au naturale by leaving her hair down. "So where do I wear this dress to next? It's acceptable for dinner with friends right?" Troian asked her followers on Instagram. Yes, Troian - you can go anywhere you want in a design as special as that. Bella accessorized with a Givenchy mini-bag and pumps, and let her denim coat hang off the shoulders to show off its interior lining. The Most Shocking Beauty Makeover of the Year Unexpectedly Came From Leo Messi - and His Blond Hair

No, this wasn't a prank. And no, it wasn't a wig. Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi actually went blond back in July 2016. After his devastating loss in the Copa America Centenario in June, a few legal issues, and a subsequent much-needed vacation with his longtime girlfriend in Ibiza, the forward for FC Barcelona showed up for the team's training in England sporting a totally different look - he looked so different, we wondered if he had trouble getting through security.

Leo was not the first celebrity to go blond after Copa America wrapped up. In June, James Rodriguez stepped out in Miami with platinum strands that didn't even make it to his birthday just a few weeks later. Though Leo changed his mind about his new look pretty quickly, too, we will never forget his sudden 2016 makeover. Keep reading to see more photos of Leo's blond hair.

From that moment on, the cuteness has only increased. There are endless photos of the royal couple happily walking arm in arm, laughing so hard it's contagious, and enjoying sweet and silly moments with their three daughters, Princesses Catharina-Amalia, Alexia, and Ariane. How the French Avoid Getting Too Wine-Drunk at Dinner

Wine pairings with dinner seems like such a lovely concept, but is there any way to drink merrily without getting too drunk? A French winemaker recently let me in on a little trick he's been doing for years, something he claims is very commonplace in France. Here it is: before consuming alcohol, eat bread dipped in about a tablespoon or two of olive oil. According to this Frenchman, the oil helps coat the stomach and slows the absorption of the alcohol into your bloodstream. While I don't have any scientific evidence to back up this claim, it does seem like a harmless hack I'm willing to try out!

Please note, this tip is isn't to encourage drinking and driving. Vintners, restaurateurs, and US law discourage driving under the influence under any circumstance.

Under the "Symptoms" tab, you can answer 10 questions that will dictate a score correlating to Instagram Friend all the way up to Instagram Husband. The site also offers treatment options, support groups, and even spiritual practices, all of which we wish were real. One of the site's suggestions for approaching the Instagram Wife states: "She will want to take a picture of this poignant moment. Now is the chance to use your new boldness. Say, 'No. Honey, no.' This will be difficult, but stay strong." Ha!

Consider it a safe haven for the struggling husbands of Instagram Wives, a place for fed-up men who want to do more than make their wives look good on social media. Keep reading to see hilarious Tumblr photos that are bringing these men together and letting them know they're not alone.

15 New Year's Eve Traditions That Might Guarantee Good Luck in 2017

Growing up Latina means that eating grapes at midnight on New Year's is as much of a tradition as watching the ball drop in NYC's Times Square. The details behind that ritual and many more good luck tricks practiced on that night may vary based on your background, but no matter where you're from, all of these seemingly weird activities have one thing in common - making sure you have the most positive year ever.

Here are some traditions you might want to rush into when the clock strikes midnight and announces the beginning of 2017 - you know, just in case! Bonus points if you somehow manage to do all of them at the same time - and if you do, please tell us how you did it.

1. Eat 12 grapes

Let's start with the tradition of all traditions: eating 12 grapes at midnight. Each grape gives you a chance to make a wish, and even if you don't believe all of them will come true, the eating contest is a staple that turns into a fun game to see who can finish their grapes faster and in under a minute.

2. Put money in your shoe

The easiest tradition for the whole family to take part in, even the smallest kids, is to fold a bill inside your shoe and keep it in there through midnight. Variations also include holding the money in your hand or in your pocket, and all supposedly guarantee wealth in the next 12 months.

3. Take a suitcase around the block

One of my favorite memories from being a kid is seeing my cousins and aunts walk around the block with a suitcase on New Year's Eve. Call it a coincidence, but the years they did that were always the years they traveled most, which is the goal of the tradition. I'm a believer!

4. Sip Champagne

OK, almost everyone does this, but toasting with family and friends to the New Year is a must in a Latin household. You better believe the bubbly will be poured at least 10 minutes ahead of midnight with everyone holding a glass in one hand and their grapes in the other.

5. Start the year off on your right foot

Literally. Receive Jan. 1 standing on . . . well, just your right foot, or your year will just not go that great.

6. Color-coordinate your underwear

This tradition is basically a combination of a mood ring and a cootie catcher - a color will determine your fate. Red is set to bring you good luck in love, and yellow is meant to sprinkle luck and prosperity throughout your whole year.

7. Wear your underwear inside out

Once you've settled on what color underwear you want to wear, make sure to wear it inside out, and then swap it back in the first few minutes of the New Year. The desired outcome here is to have plenty of clothes throughout the New Year.

8. Keep a bucket of water handy

A big part of the New Year is starting January with only positive vibes. To do this, many Latin families clean their house from top to bottom. You're taking this tradition to the next level if you also decide to throw a bucket of water out the door (or window).

9. Don't clean your home too much

Yes, you can do some spot cleaning and make sure everything is in order for the night of festivities, but sweeping is out of the question. You don't want to sweep away any good fortune.

10. Burn "año viejos"

When I explain this tradition to some of my friends, they don't understand why a doll is created just to be burnt at midnight, but like most traditions, this is in hopes that whatever/whoever did us wrong in 2015 stays in 2015. In Latin America, you can see these dolls burning in the street. In the US, you might want to create a miniature version and safely do this at home.

11. Choose your outfit wisely

Whether your tradition is to wear all white or wear a completely new outfit from head to toe on New Year's Eve, either will make sure that luck is on your side in 2016.

12. Make a New Year wish list

You might not write a wish list for Santa, but you're definitely writing one for the New Year. You want to make sure you have your list written out, so that you can read it to yourself at midnight.

13. Keep a handful of lentils

This tradition can be done in various ways: one option is to cook the lentils and eat them at any point on the Dec. 31. The second option is to put them in a baggie and hold them in your hand - or put them in your pocket. Either way, this gesture calls for a year of prosperity.

14. Put your candles to good use

Light candles on New Year's Eve as a way to make next year one you can really enjoy. Color is important here as well - red is for love, yellow will help with finances, and green brings good health. If you have kids in your family, have them blow out the candles as a way to ensure they work.

15. Sit and stand . . . then sit again and again

If you're looking to have someone put a ring on your finger in the New Year, sit and stand three times to up your chances of marriage.

What's the Deal With Alcohol and Ibuprofen?

If you wake up with a headache after a night of overindulging, sometimes figuring out what painkiller to take can make the headache even worse. Taking acetaminophen (aka Tylenol) can lead to liver damage, but take note: you're also not supposed to drink while taking ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen drugs (like Advil) are part of the anti-inflammatory drug family known as NSAIDs, which can cause tears in the stomach lining if taken on an empty belly. Add alcohol to the mix, and the potential danger is heightened. If you take ibuprofen when drinking more than the recommended amount for women (about two to three drinks), you increase your risk of stomach irritation and bleeding. This is especially true for people who are prone to ulcers.

But wait! Taking Tylenol when you're hungover isn't such a good idea either, and aspirin has its downsides too. Acetaminophen can lead to liver damage if you take it in large doses for more than a couple of days. Heavy drinkers who take acetaminophen and don't eat enough can overtax their livers. According to researchers at Harvard Medical School:

If you drink a lot of alcohol - say, on a Saturday night - and take a normal dose of acetaminophen to deal with the hangover in the morning, you probably are not going to have liver problems. . . . The trouble starts when regular heavy drinkers take a lot of acetaminophen over a period of time - several days, at least, and maybe longer. (In this context, heavy drinkers are defined as people who regularly have three or more drinks a day.) A drinking habit and a poor diet often go hand in hand. Multiple high doses of acetaminophen are more dangerous for drinkers partly because their glutathione levels tend to be low because they don't eat well.

It may sound like popping a few Tylenols after a night or two of heavy drinking can't hurt, but the risks associated with taking Tylenol after recreational drinking are somewhat blurry. A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory group found in a review of its database and a large liver failure study that the median dose that led to liver failure was between 5,000 and 7,000 milligrams of acetaminophen per day - scarily close to the current daily limit of 4,000 milligrams (eight extra-strength Tylenol). The FDA group recommended lowering the daily limit to 3,250 milligrams (or 10 regular-strength Tylenol pills a day) to help prevent accidental overdose.

So what's a hungover, headache-plagued gal to do - besides not drinking so much in the first place? Since the jury is still out on the exact effects of combining Advil or Tylenol with booze, it's probably best just to tough it out. While a recent study in rats found that coffee and aspirin are the best remedies for relieving hangover symptoms, it didn't look at possible alcohol interactions - and it is known that taking aspirin with alcohol can increase your risk of stomach bleeding. If you're looking to remedy a hangover, your best bet is to go natural with options like this fresh-pressed hangover juice or a yoga sequence to relieve your symptoms. Even better, help prevent a hangover the next time with these tips.

What Is Ginger Beer, Anyway?

For a refreshment so popular, it's interesting to note how many misconceptions exist about ginger beer. The drink, which originated in the mid-1700s in England, was first known as a fermented alcoholic beverage made from sugar, ginger, water, and a starter culture known as ginger beer plant. But today, the name "ginger beer" is actually a misnomer, as most commercial ginger beer is a soft drink and contains no alcohol (although a few brands, such as Crabbie's, do).

In comparison to ginger ale, ginger beer is more robust in flavor with a spicy quality. Ginger beer can be enjoyed alone, but it also plays a starring role in cocktails such as the dark and stormy and the Moscow Mule. How do you like to drink it?

This Is Why We're Sure 2017 Will Be Selena Gomez's Best Year Yet

This was a wild year for Selena Gomez. Though the singer and actress started with a world tour to promote her hit album Revival and appeared on every red carpet, including at the Met Gala and the Oscars Vanity Fair party, by the time August rolled around, Selena was ready for a break, saying she wanted to concentrate on caring for herself after her diagnosis of lupus brought on side effects of depression and anxiety.

After 90 days away, a period in which we collectively rooted for Selena, we were happy to see her make her return to the spotlight with an emotional speech at the American Music Awards in November. Now that Selena is healthy and feels strong, we can only expect 2017 to be her best, most in-control year yet. Scroll ahead for our predictions of what we think Selena will be tackling this year.
