Lack of Sleep Could Be Doing This to Your Heart
We've all pulled the occasional all-nighter without a second-thought about what might happen to our bodies in the process. Our friends at Shape Magazine share their findings about lack of sleep's health consequences.
What do new moms, college students, paramedics, and ER docs all have in common (besides having to deal with puke on a regular basis)? They all routinely need to make it through the day on no or very little sleep. And while no one thinks pulling an all-nighter is good for your health, there's actual evidence that it hurts your heart.
Getting less than three hours of sleep during a 24-hour period causes immediate heart problems, according to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. Researchers looked at 20 healthy adults, testing their hearts before and after they worked a 24-hour shift during which they weren't allowed to drink coffee, take caffeine, or eat anything that might have a stimulant effect, including nuts and chocolate (possibly the hardest 24 hours ever). After missing just one night of sleep, people's hearts showed signs of increased strain, they had increased blood pressure, and their heart rates were elevated - all warning signs of cardiovascular problems. The researchers also found increased levels of thyroid hormones and cortisol, indicating high levels of stress, another known contributor to heart disease.
The results clearly showed that working when you should be sleeping takes a short-term toll on your heart, said study author Daniel Kuetting, M.D., of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the University of Bonn in a press release. But, he added, more research needs to be done to see how long the negative effects last and how much sleep it takes to return to normal. It makes sense, however, that repeatedly skipping sleep would set you up for ongoing health problems, especially when done the way most people do it in the real world - with gallons of coffee, diet soda, or other stimulants, which make the heart work even harder.
Bottom line? When in doubt, sleep it out. And if your job (or kid) requires you to be up all night, try to do it as infrequently as possible and make sure you're doing other things to keep your ticker in top shape, like exercising and eating a heart-healthy diet. You Have to See Latin America's Christmas Traditions Outlined in 1 Hilarious Video
The Flama's hilarious Joanna Rants host Joanna Hausmann is a master at creating relatable roundups for the Latinx audience. But there's one episode of her viral video series we'll cherish each holiday season: her Christmas traditions rant.
In the video, Joanna takes the opportunity to sound off on all the Christmas craziness, which she still celebrates despite being Jewish because, in her own words, it's "more fun than Hanukkah" and "impossible to avoid" in Latin America. Understandable!
Press play above to watch Joanna hilariously call out everything from Santa's many different names (Chile calls him "Viejito Pascuero," nowhere near Santa Claus) to our weird obsession with baby Jesus to how we celebrate for basically three weeks. These Stars Gave "Free the Nipple" a Whole New Meaning in 2016 - and That's a Good Thing
This year was less about "freeing" the nipple and more about just showing one if you wanted to. While stars like Miley Cyrus and Ireland Baldwin pushed for the cause in 2015, stripping down to promote the acceptance of nudity on social media, this year we saw a new direction. Women who have always felt comfortable in their bodies (think Kim Kardashian, Emily Ratajkowski, and Kendall Jenner) addressed their general willingness to flash skin. "We are more than just our bodies, but that doesn't mean we have to be shamed for them or our sexuality," Emily wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner penned a blog post on her site about why it's not a "big deal" that she ditches a bra to show off her nipple ring. Others, like Serena Williams and Gigi Hadid, sparked a bit of controversy after accidental nip slips at Wimbledon and on the runway, respectively. Even so, they came out confident and strong, brushing off the incidents like they were NBD. Read on for a list of ladies who said, "So what? You saw my nipple," in 2016.
We Gave 2 Dogs a Cognition Test, and This Is What Happened
When we heard about a cognition test for dogs, we really had no idea what to expect. But Dr. Brian Hare, cofounder of Dognition and director of the Duke Canine Cognition Center, assured us that he had created this entire cognition test to learn more about your dog than you ever thought possible.
Dognition is an online tool with several tests to analyze all your dog's behaviors. They're fun little science-based games that, beyond telling you about your dog, allow for a bonding experience between the two of you. Because the test is fairly lengthy, it allows for that initial bonding experience, but then once you get the results, you'll be able to understand your dog so much better. "Sometimes dogs don't listen to a command and we don't know why," Hare said when he walked me through the process. "But not all dogs learn things the same way, so maybe that dog isn't understanding your command how you're giving it."
We had two dog owners in our office try this set of tests on their dogs to see what it was really like, and both of them said that above everything else, they enjoyed the time they spent with their dogs. Keep reading to see how the tests went for them, and then try Dognition for yourself for free, courtesy of Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind.

Emily Blunt Can't Wait For Her Kids to See Her Movies - Except This One
It seems unavoidable that Emily Blunt's daughters will stumble upon The Devil Wears Prada - after all, their father, John Krasinski, has seen it over 70 times - but Blunt is lining up plenty of other movies she can't wait to share with her girls as well. For starters, she's already got a few animated films to her name, but there's also Into the Woods, and, of course, her upcoming starring role in Mary Poppins Returns. I recently sat down with Blunt in New York, where we discussed how being a mom has affected the projects she chooses, working with her husband, and what film she hopes her children never find.

POPSUGAR: How much, if it all, are your kids a factor into the actual roles you choose now?
Emily Blunt: Mary Poppins! What a gift to my girls! I would've done Mary Poppins whether I was a mother or not, but the fact that I'm a mother and a mother of girls is just so awesome to be able to play Mary Poppins. It's a real gift. Because they're just gonna find it joyous.
PS: What other movies of yours are you excited to show your kids?
EB: The animated ones; I did Animal Crackers with John [Krasinski], which was so fun and cute. And I did My Little Pony, though I'm a nasty pony in that, which was kinda fun. I'm excited about Mary Poppins. I think Salmon Fishing in the Yemen's a really good movie. I think some of these movies where I'm making out with other guys, they're gonna be like "Ewww!"
PS: What movies are you fine with them never seeing?
EB: My Summer of Love, which was my first movie, where I'm having a full-on nude sex scene. Stuff like that, I don't think they have to see. How embarrassing.

PS: Did you and John actually record together on Animal Crackers?
EB: We did yes, so we got to improvise a lot.
PS: I feel like that never happens. You always hear about actors being in the booth alone and never seeing the rest of the cast.
EB: Never! We asked for it, though it's a lot easier to coordinate it with a married couple who can drive to work together. It was cool because we could just go off script and make it our own. That was fun.
PS: Do you see this as a stepping stone to working together in a live action movie?
EB: We want to! It has to be the right thing. We're looking for the right thing.
PS: So John recently said he's seen The Devil Wears Prada 75 times . . .
EB: He's a freak for it.
PS: Have you seen anything that he's done even close to that many times?
EB: I've seen a lot of The Office episodes, but I wouldn't say I watched each one 75 times. I don't know what that says about me.
PS: There are a lot of episodes of The Office. Literally over 100.
EB: But I've seen every one. That's a commitment, right?

Sam Smith's Cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" Might Make You Cry
If you like your Sam Smith to be on the sad side - and really, what other side is there? - then you're in luck. Back in 2014, the Grammy winner and Oscar winner released a music video for his version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," aka one of the saddest holiday songs of all time. In true Sam Smith style, the video isn't flashy, but rather simple. He's at a microphone in a room, accompanied by a piano player. We're already crying. It's fine.

Does Your Face Get Super Red Post-Workout? Here's How to Fix It
When Tone It Up (TIU) hosted us in Southern California for its seaside retreat earlier this year, we got some amazing tips from its go-to makeup artist, Jennifer Naideth. Jennifer is a pro at creating the effortless, au naturel California beach babe look for TIU founders Karena and Katrina, as well as packing essentials for a gym bag, creating a post-workout quick makeup routine, and (our favorite) devising a quick fix to that red face most of us get after a hot and sweaty workout.
While there's nothing to worry about (your face turning red after exercise is totally normal!), if you're on your way to the office, a date, or even just brunch out with your friends, we get that you might want to cool that face off and return to your normal complexion. Fortunately, Jennifer has a few great tips on how to calm the redness.
- The cold towel face mask. This trick calls for cold water from the sink and any hand towel your gym or studio might provide. "Hold it on your face like a face mask for a few minutes," said Jennifer. This should start to reduce some of the red hue.
- Cold shower and washcloth. Take the washcloth trick into the shower - a cold shower! This should help send the blood back, away from your face. So instead of taking your usual warm post-workout shower, cool it down, and bring the mask in with you.
- Use essential oils. Jennifer's favorite tip is to apply essential oils to her face like "lavender, tangerine, peppermint, and wild citrus." She noted that she's fond of doTERRA essential oils and keeps them in her gym bag.
- Ice your neck. This tip is from our own experience - a pack of ice on the neck can start to cool the blood going to your face to reduce redness. We've tried it post-half-marathon, and it's crazy how quickly your face goes from freakishly red to slightly flushed. If you don't have ice, try a cold water bottle and put it onto the soft part of your neck where it meets your jaw bone (under your ear).

On Friday, Kate followed up her snap with a frame-worthy shot featuring Oliver and his family, writing, "Pine Creek Cookhouse yearly ski 🎿 Beautiful snowy day in the mountains with my number ones ❄️❤️❄️ #LoveMyFamily." We just can't get enough of Kate's beautiful, blended brood!
This Clarinet-Playing Pole Dancer Is the Only Holiday Gift You Need
You may remember pole-dancing clarinet player Paul Groslouis from his amazing rendition of Jason Derulo's "Wiggle," but his 2014 display of of holiday cheer (and a tiny pair of Santa-inspired shorts) was truly a gift to us all. Paul performed "Jingle Bells," complete with fake snow, lots of tinsel, and a cardboard sleigh. There's no way you won't be impressed by his skills - watch the hilarious clip above now.
Update: There's a Hanukkah version too. Check out Paul in a giant dreidel below.

Is The OA Getting a Second Season? Here's What We Know
Netflix nearly pulled a Beyoncé in December, announcing that a new original series would be dropping in a matter of days. All eight episodes of season one of The OA are now available for all your viewing purposes, but don't get too attached. Netflix hasn't yet renewed the series for a second season. To be fair, it took the company a while to confirm season two of Stranger Things as well. We're still waiting on Gilmore Girls to be officially greenlit (or not - just tell us something, Netflix). Creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij hinted at the possibilities in an interview with Variety shortly after season one debuted.
When asked if there were plans for season two, Marling said:
"Oh my goodness, that would be so much fun. We spent a good three years just cobbling the mathematics of the labyrinth of a mind-bender that could go for many, many hours. We wanted to solve the riddle. We wanted to know what was at the center of the labyrinth within the very first chapter. I would think that's one of the exciting things about where we leave the ending, is that in some ways, it resolves in a satisfying sense, especially with the boys, but it also leaves something open. It's exciting to leave that gap between one season and another and see how people feel about it and what they're thinking, and then to get to continue, to actually answer the questions. If we get to be so lucky as to get to another round, I would be so excited."
Meanwhile, Batmanglij essentially said it depends on the response to season one.
"Yes, we designed it that way. Whether it will happen or not, I think that's up to you guys. All of you in the world. If people connect to it. I would like to see this story continue. . . . Brit and I figured out the whole thing. The whole thing's a riddle. There are a lot of clues. Very few people have really picked up on all the clues. Our sound engineer picked up on a major one that kind of blew my mind. I was like, 'That is designed for only the closest, creepiest viewer to find.'"

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Chicken Breasts
It's no secret that boneless, skinless chicken breasts aren't the most exciting ingredient, but they're certainly one of the most popular among home cooks. If you're feeling totally uninspired by your usual chicken recipes, allow these chef-approved tips to get you out of your rut. Here's how some of the best Food Network personalities and more of our favorite celebrity cooks transform their chicken breasts.
Alton Brown: Pounded Thin
Alton Brown's recipe is for chicken kiev, a popular dish that involves pounding the chicken breasts thin before stuffing them with herbed butter, coating them in breadcrumbs, and frying them. Alton's pro tip is to refrigerate the rolled-up, stuffed chicken breasts for at least an hour so they stay intact while being fried, so you don't have to worry about pesky butcher's twine.
Ina Garten: Lemon on Lemon
Ina's lemon chicken breasts recipe has a five-star rating out of more than 600 reviews, and it's easy to see why. She makes sure there's maximum lemon flavor by baking the chicken breasts with plenty of zest, juice, and wedges.
Chrissy Teigen: With a Brick
Yes, an actual brick. Once you try the technique in Chrissy Teigen's brick chicken recipe, you might never go back.
Rachael Ray: Spinach and Mushroom Stuffed
Rachael Ray's spinach- and mushroom-stuffed chicken is further proof that stuffing your food is always a good idea. A filling made of spinach, mushrooms, ricotta, parmesan, and garlic results in chicken that's anything but bland.
Giada De Laurentiis: Piccata
Giada's foolproof chicken piccata is the ultimate Italian-style chicken dinner. With a short list of impactful ingredients (butter, lemon juice, chicken stock, and capers), you can make your own restaurant-worthy chicken.
Ted Allen: Parmesan-Crusted
When in doubt, add parmesan cheese. Chopped host Ted Allen recommends baking the chicken in a crunchy crust of panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese.

Dual Holiday Celebrations? How to Celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas Without Blowing a Gasket!
Growing up, I didn't get a Jewish education, but we celebrated the Jewish holidays. My mom had converted from Catholicism and Protestantism to Judaism for my father and then years later when I met my ex-husband, I started to celebrate the Christian holidays with him as well as the Jewish ones. Back in my parents' day, this would have been considered unusual to raise children with more than one religion, but nowadays it's more common. In fact in 2013, the Pew Research Center found that 81 percent of non-Christians in the United States celebrate Christmas. Perhaps the holiday has become more American than religious for those of us raised in this country who comes from non-Christian backgrounds? I'm not sure, but either way the other day when I took my daughter to Barnes & Noble, I found a book just right for her: a book on celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas! It was such a joy to find. So many people find it confusing when I tell them we celebrate all the holidays, but for us this is a family norm and finding literature that embraces our way of living is a wonderful feeling.
When you're celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas, the holidays can be a ton of fun but also expensive and stressful! Here are a few tips to keep yourself from shouting "Oy vey!" when you're a mom living an interfaith (Christian and Jewish) lifestyle.
Pick Two Big Gifts and Make the Rest Small
Buying gifts for eight days plus Christmas, is a lot of financial strain if you don't do it right, especially for single moms making the holidays come to life on their own. For me, it was important that while Hanukkah is not a major Jewish holiday, for Hanukkah to be as special and fun as Christmas. I pick two big gifts - one for the first night of Hanukkah and one for Christmas, and make the rest of the gifts on the small side to completely cheap (think dollar-store items). There's a running joke that you got the CD one night of Hanukkah and the CD case the other - you don't have to go that cheap, but you have to stretch your dollar out. Shop at the dollar store or "under 5 bucks" store, especially for little kids. They don't care how much the gift cost or what brand it is. They're just happy they got something.
Choose One Huge Celebration Over the Other
You can do a huge Christmas/Hanukkah party if you like, or you can decide to host the holidays at your home for one holiday in particular, and go somewhere else for the other holiday. For me, I typically do a big Hanukkah party and go somewhere else for Christmas or have a small gathering at my house for Christmas Eve. Choosing to either have a mixed-religious celebration or picking one holiday to "go large" with helps cut down on expenses. Hosting holidays at your home is not cheap. Be smart.
Twice the Gifts, Twice the Clutter
Let's be real: double the holidays, double the clutter - maybe. Make sure to donate and give away toys ahead of time. It will save you a lot of aggravation and space!
Secret Santa - Secret Kanta It!
My mom called the Jewish Santa "Kanta." If you have large extended family that you all swap with, cut down on the funds by suggesting a Secret Santa or Kanta swap so you're buying for one person instead of a billion. Another budget move I made upon getting a divorce was buying only the little members of my extended family holiday presents and telling the older kids I would have to stick to getting them birthday gifts only. Does it stink? Sure, but older kids are capable of understanding when money is tight whereas younger children are not.
Decor
I like my decorations separate, especially when Hanukkah doesn't coincide with Christmas, but when it does, I try to mix it up a bit. Hanukkah placements and window clings, with a wreath on the door and indoor lights by the window. Is it colorful? Sure, but the holidays aren't meant to be drab! Some people have Jewish-themed-Christmas ornaments on their tree and why not, if that's your bag of tricks?
Give Them an Experience
Forget the gifts and instead, hold a family breakfast or outing to celebrate being together rather than shelling out dough on gifts. Family, friends, and love are the reason for the season not Shopkins, iPads, and video games.
Pick One Holiday to Exchange
Choose one holiday to exchange gifts with family or if children want a pricey present, explain that they will only get one pricey the gift and the other holiday gifts can be composed of $15 and under presents or instead an experience.
Holiday Photos and Attire
Some interfaith families choose to shoot photos in neutral attire or stick to a holiday red, sending holiday cards out with general PC terms like "happy holidays." Growing up, there were never any Jewish-themed clothing items, but nowadays there are so for the holidays I got one photo in a red Christmas dress and the other a handmade dress from Etsy in blue with Star of David all over it for Hanukkah. If you're like me and you like to relish each holiday for its uniqueness, getting into themed gear is a lot of fun and we simply say "happy holidays" on our cards since most of my friends don't celebrate Hanukkah.
Read Up
I take the holidays as a great time to read about the celebrations with my daughter, especially for Hanukkah simply because she has less social context for the Jewish traditions. Take this time to really explain the unique differences (and similarities!) between the two religions in a developmentally appropriate way for your child. It's a great time to build teachable moments.
For all of you lighting up the menorah and Christmas tree this year, have a merry Christmas and a happy Hanukkah!

The Chuck E. Cheese Challenge Is Like the Mannequin Challenge - Except It Requires More Skill
As the Mannequin Challenge begins its slow fade into the depths of archived internet memes, another challenge is on the rise. The new Chuck E. Cheese challenge is one that requires a bit of a nuanced explanation. Have you ever been to a Chuck E. Cheese's or aging theme park that has a hilariously dated animatronic band, one that has likely seen better days, that performs the same songs on a loop? Well, this challenge attempts to re-create just that.
The challenge appears to have started on Dec. 10 by a professional dancer who goes by BamTheDancer on Twitter. Basically, the challenge requires its participants to flaunt their creepiest and most robotic dance moves. While the internet is slowly hopping on this trend, there are still plenty of hilarious examples. Look ahead for some of our favorites.
