10 Things You Probably Don't Know About Gilmore Girls Star Alexis Bledel

Alexis Bledel first captured all of our hearts as the bookish, whip-smart Rory on Gilmore Girls, and she's been enchanting us ever since with roles in Mad Men and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, as well as making sweet red carpet appearances with husband Vincent Kartheiser. With the Gilmore Girls reboot fresh in our minds, and the possibility of another Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie on the way, there's no better time to get to know the actress.

  1. She's Latina. Much like Cameron Diaz and Bella Thorne, Alexis is another Latina actress whose pale complexion confuses people sometimes. "Most people think I'm Irish," the Argentinean star told Latina Magazine in 2005. "It's the only culture my mom knows from life, and my father as well, and they made the decision to raise their children within the context they had been raised in, so we speak Spanish in my parents' house, and my mom cooks amazing Mexican food."
  2. English wasn't her first language. Due to her Argentinian roots, Alexis - who was born in Houston - spoke fluent Spanish before she learned English in school. In other words, that Gilmore Girls scene of her speaking stilted Spanish to one of Emily's maids is totally fake!
  3. Her first job was modeling for Seventeen magazine. While most of us were scooping ice cream or lifeguarding as teenagers, Alexis was booking modeling gigs, which eventually led to her interest in acting. Her first one happened to be in Seventeen, which she opened about in a later interview with the mag, saying, "I ended up taking senior year off because I traveled a little bit for my modeling career - Seventeen was actually my first job!" Full circle, you guys.
  4. She originally wanted to be an architect. Although she took acting classes as a way to overcome being shy when she was younger, the acting bug didn't hit until later on. Instead, she wanted to do something totally different. "I went through a phase where I wanted to be an architect," she told Seventeen. "Then I realized there was a lot of math involved in that so I ruled it out completely."
  5. Her name isn't really "Alexis." Her first name, anyway. She was actually born Kimberly Alexis Bledel before ditching her first name, a move many Hollywood stars have done as well.

  6. She was a film major at New York University. Although she didn't attend Rory's alma mater Yale, Alexis still has a pretty incredible college on her resume: NYU. It was while studying there that she ended up scoring the role of Rory in the first place, kickstarting her Hollywood career. "I always thought that I would work behind the camera, because it's a more comfortable place for me to be, really," she told IGN about studying film at the university. "I went to college at NYU, and I was working there as a model, and I started auditioning for some pilots around that time." As luck would have it, Gilmore Girls ended up being one of them.
  7. She was sick with the flu when she auditioned for Gilmore Girls. On top of that, it was her first-ever acting audition! Alexis scored the role while still enrolled at NYU, even though she couldn't stop sniffling during the network screen test. "Luckily, we had videotaped one of her early auditions," casting director Jill Anthony revealed. "We popped that in, and they saw her on camera and she just jumped off the screen, you know. Those blue eyes."
  8. She hates coffee. Rory Gilmore basically has a coffee IV hooked up to her arm, but Alexis can't stand the stuff. During filming, her mug was usually filled with soda, instead.
  9. She loves renovating houses. Apparently Alexis is a Fixer Upper fan. "I tend to renovate properties when I'm not working," she told Nylon magazine in 2015. "It's fun for me, because it's creative and I can kind of control it. My job is very out of my control a lot of the time, because I don't want to get into, like, producing movies, although we are trying to make another Sisterhood movie."
  10. Rory's boyfriends became Alexis's boyfriends. The onscreen chemistry between Rory and Dean (Jared Padalecki), and later Rory and Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), ended up translating off screen as well. Although plenty of people know Alexis dated Milo, casting director Mara Casey claimed she also dated Jared in an interview with Life & Style. "We did have a joke about casting all of Alexis' [real-life] boyfriends," she said. "She dated Jared and Milo. And she also dated a young New York actor named Chris Heuisler, who played a guest role. Real sweet kid."

8 Things You Never Knew About Trader Joe's, Straight From a Former Employee

I spoke to a former employee who worked at Trader Joe's for a year, and he gave me the inside scoop on how the company is run, the little-known details of the return policy, and what the point of those somewhat-annoying bells is. Spoiler alert: there's no real dirt (I tried!), but what I got was interesting, behind-the-scenes intel that made me an even bigger fan of the store.

There's a reason the customer service is so good.

Trader Joe's strategy in providing a quality customer-service experience is simple: overstaff. "They totally overstaff so that you don't feel like your stocking duties or your register duties trump interacting with customers - they encourage you to be nice to customers." That's why you can almost always find someone in a Hawaiian t-shirt or crew-member uniform walking around and waiting to help you find anything.

The employees try all the new products so they know what to tell customers.

"Each Trader Joe's has a break room, and they have one person who's in charge of cooking new stuff that the store gets and making it available for the entire staff who comes through the store that day to try it. They want you to try all the products so you can have an opinion so that when you recommend stuff to people, it's not baseless."

The pay is REALLY good.

This guy started out at Trader Joe's making $12/hour, which was above the state's minimum wage. You not only start out making a good amount, but it gets even better quickly. After three months of working more than 30 hours a week, you get health insurance and a 401K. You'll also likely get a raise once or twice a year. A friend of this employee worked at Trader Joe's for over five years and made $21/hour - that's an annual salary of $42K.

They donate all unsold food.

"Trader Joe's donates a ton of food. It's called 'spoils,' which just means it's not in perfect shape. There's nothing wrong with eating a lime with a couple brown spots, but if you wouldn't buy it and be excited about buying it, then it gets put with spoils and typically gets donated. They donate flowers, produce - everything - to local organizations."

There's a method behind the bell ringing.

You've sometimes noticed employees ringing bells while you're checking out, right? There's a method to the madness, and it's sort of like the store's secret language for various customer-service needs. "One bell means everyone to your register, which means the lines are getting too long and they need everyone at a register. Two bells means you need an employee to come over and help with something. For example, let's say the bag of spinach you bought is partially opened or looks bad; you ring two bells and an employee will come over and grab a new one for you. Three bells means a manager needs to come over."

Every store has an in-house artist.

"Literally all of the signage around the store is custom-made by two or three artists who hang out in the back and almost exclusively do that, and register work every once in a while." That's why every store has location-based art throughout the store - pretty cool, right?

You can return ANYTHING.

Seriously, you could open a bag of popcorn, try it, and bring it back if you didn't like it - for a full refund. "You see that a lot. You get people who come back and say, 'Hey, I tried it, but I didn't really like it.'" Excuse me while I go try every single thing in the snack aisle.

They strive to create an experience that's beyond grocery shopping.

"They really push this whole, 'we don't want you to feel like you're just grocery shopping' thing. They want it to be an experience - something that pulls you out of the monotony of your everyday life."

Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish Show Off Their Sweet Love at a Basketball Game on Christmas Day

Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish enjoyed a game of basketball on Christmas Day when they watched the LA Clippers take on the LA Lakers at the Staples Center. The couple, who tied the knot in August, looked extra cheery as they shared a few loving glances while sitting courtside. While the actor dressed casual in jeans, a t-shirt, and a beige jacket, his wife looked festive in a maroon sweater dress and black boots. Not only did the two have fun taking selfies during the game, but Kevin also mingled with fellow comedian Melissa McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone. Of course, the best part was when Kevin took to the court to hang out with some of the players, proving how tall some of they are in the process. So cute!

2 Easy Steps to Turn Your Old iPhone Into a Usable iPod Touch

Now that you've made the switch to an iPhone 7, what to do with your old iPhone? While you can always sell it, any profit is dependent on the quality of the phone. A phone that's seen its share of wear and tear likely has a low resale value. Consider turning that gently used iPhone 6S (and 6S Plus, 6 Plus, 6, and 5C) into the equivalent of an iPod Touch, perfect for kids wanting an iDevice to call their own.

To get started using an old iPhone as an iPod Touch, insert a SIM card into the phone - be sure the card is from the same wireless carrier that the phone uses. Connect the iPhone to an Internet-enabled computer with iTunes. The program will activate the iPhone, letting you use it as an iPod Touch.

If the SIM card used in the above activation is still active, you can remove it from the now iPod Touch and place it back in the device that will continue to be used as an iPhone. Or, if the SIM card isn't activated, leaving it in the device is fine, since there's no paid plan connected to it. Make sure to enable a WiFi network, and you're good to use apps and listen to music as before!

Women Wore the Sh*t Out of These Sneakers in 2016

This year saw plenty of sneaker trends. Maybe that's because women are more readily incorporating flats into their fancy wardrobes, pairing slips with Stan Smiths and tiered gowns with Supergas. That's one way to toughen up a feminine look, but it also allows for maximum comfort. We've got a feeling sneakers will stay as relevant in 2017 as they are now. With that in mind, we did a little digging and uncovered the most-searched-for styles of the year.

Using the data straight from the experts at our sister site ShopStyle, we curated a definitive list of the slip-ons, high-tops, and trainers that girls went hunting for. As you might expect, Nike and Adidas designs surfaced plenty of times, but there are lots of designer platforms and trainers that went "viral" too. Read on to see where your favorite sneakers fall into place, and go shopping for the ones you love.

Just because this mama's expecting doesn't mean she'll forgo her signature style, and that's what we love about her. However, you'll also likely spot Ciara in a pair of sneakers and cozy PJs, especially when she's hanging out with her son, Future, or in this case, sporty Calvins and slouchy overalls. There's Really No Love Advent Video Sexier Than Gigi Hadid's

While Chrissy Teigen and Bella Hadid stripped down and led us in a workout, models like Karlie Kloss and Elsa Hosk made their shorts all about the lingerie. But no one's bra and panties were more striking than Gigi Hadid's - she pranced around a hotel room at The Standard in mesh skivvies that'd make anyone want to dance. Though we're not completely sure what spurred the idea behind all the clips below, they're definitely worth a glimpse as you count down to 2017. The Pickup Line Ice T Used on Coco Austin When They Met Is Amazing

Coco Austin and Ice T have been together for almost 15 years now, which is sometimes hard to come by in Hollywood. While some couples date for years before getting married, others quickly elope, which is exactly what the parents of baby Chanel did when they tied the knot on Dec. 31, 2001, after just two months together. But while we're aware of all the cute moments they've shared since getting together, we've always wondered how they first met. Ice T first laid eyes on Coco when he stopped by his friend's movie shoot, where Coco was working as a model. After being introduced to her by his friend to "give him something to do" since he admits he was in a bad mood, Ice T boldly asked her, "Would you ever consider dating a gangster rapper?" Coco reveals she didn't really know what to say except that she thought he was nice, to which he epically replied, "Well, baby, if you take the 'n' off nice, you get ice." And the rest is history. Mic drop.

Meet the Power-Woman Shoe That Isn't Ballet Flats or Heels

Heels make you look (and feel) taller, stand straighter, and walk with confidence, so it's clear why they've always been a power-woman favorite. The downside, however, is that a four-inch pump isn't the comfiest choice when you're standing for presentations, and for ladies who hate wearing heels, you'll want a better alternative for the office. So when we had the chance to chat with with Rati Levesque, chief merchant at The RealReal, we had pick her brain on shoes and trends. We wanted to know: what's her shoe pick for the working woman in 2017?

To our delight, she said, "If you love the comfort of the block heel though and want an alternative for the office, I would suggest classic loafers. They're always timeless, and thanks to Gucci, they're also cool again."

We already knew the loafer trend was huge because practically every trendsetter and celeb was spotted in the Gucci fur flat. Since the style catapulted back to popularity, there have been many variations of the classic, from patent leather to velvet finishes, in backless silhouettes, and in a range of rich colors. Thanks to these small updates to an already timeless shoe, the loafer still has a spot in our closets for the New Year. It's in the same league as ballet flats and comfier than stiletto heels, making it an instant must have for power women. You likely own a pair already, but if you don't, you'll want to shop the options ahead.

The Breastfeeding Lie: How Nursing Made Me Gain Weight

The day I got home from the hospital after delivering my healthy 8.5-pound baby, I stepped on the scale. I'd already dropped an easy 15 pounds postdelivery, and my prepregnancy skinny jeans seemed within reach.

Fast-forward eight months, and against all mitigated expectation, I've put on about 10 pounds. I am still wearing maternity clothes, and because the extra weight has moved from my stomach to my hips, many of those garments are stretching even more than they did when I was nine months along.

To blame for this surprising, disappointing weight gain? Breastfeeding.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a devoted proponent of breastfeeding - the benefits it has on the baby are innumerable - and I don't regret nursing. I'm still doing it and plan to for another few months at least. But I won't lie that I signed on to breastfeeding with an ulterior motive - that it would help shed those pounds by magically burning upwards of 700 calories every day you nurse.

When I was pregnant, everywhere I looked, moms were singing the praises of breastfeeding's figure-slimming virtues:

"I lost so much weight doing it!"
"The number on the scale began shrinking instantly!"
"The pounds just fell right off!"
"I could eat anything I wanted and I kept losing weight!"

And it wasn't just anecdotal. The message that breastfeeding was directly correlated with faster weight loss was propagated by my doctor, by the childbirth classes I took at the hospital, by every "baby's first year" book I read, and by the countless articles I'd scan online - even the ones in which some A-list celebrity shows up on a red carpet a month after having a baby and credits her flat abs to "just breastfeeding!" (I'm looking at you, Beyoncé.)

Whenever I read off a list of breastfeeding benefits for the mother, among reduced risk of breast cancer and diabetes, there was always, always a bullet point about weight loss.

So when I not only wasn't dropping pounds but piling them on, I thought something was wrong with me.

At a family gathering, I voiced my frustrations, which included lamenting over a week in which I worked hard to lose five pounds but simultaneously eradicated my milk supply. My brother, a postdoctoral researcher in metabolism, overheard my complaints and chimed in with a shocking revelation.

Turns out, I wasn't some outlier: breastfeeding actually doesn't help you lose weight.

Although it's true that the act of breastfeeding burns calories, in order to make the milk, your body requires energy in the form of, ahem, calories. So, contrary to popular opinion, women need to eat a few hundred extra calories a day to keep up. Helping ensure that that happens is prolactin, a hormone released during nursing that stimulates milk production by also stimulating hunger and, in some cases, suppressing the body's ability to metabolize. Not only that, but pregnant women's bodies automatically layer on extra fatty tissue - upwards of eight pounds - so they will have enough fat stores to begin breastfeeding.

Adding insult to injury, the reason my milk supply suffered during one week of rapid weight loss was because I wasn't taking in any extra calories, exercising vigorously, and skipping a meal or two - all things that can also release higher levels of toxins into the breast milk.

But then why do so many women seem to effortlessly lose weight while successfully breastfeeding? It's likely a lot of factors unrelated to nursing. Your prepregnancy fitness plays a key role as does the amount of weight you gain during pregnancy (I had gained 10 pounds more than the 25-pound cutoff my doctor recommended for me).

Also, moderate exercise, sleep, and low levels of stress help with metabolism - all things that were difficult to achieve when I was tied to a chair for up to five hours a day with a newborn baby.

The revelation that my brother clued me into - that my weight gain was likely because of, not despite, breastfeeding - wouldn't have changed my decision to nurse. Plus, he's assured me that it's entirely normal, and even my doctor confirms that once I stop breastfeeding, my ravenous hunger should subside, I'll have more time for sleep and exercise, and the pounds will start coming off.

Even still, I just wish all the experts out there would temper their guarantees that nursing will help postpartum women lose weight. Yes, I certainly could have eaten better, drank more fluids, gotten more rest, and taken more walks, but for an exhausted new mom, it would have been nice to know how vital those factors were to dropping pounds.

It would have been helpful to know how breastfeeding, as beneficial as it's proven to be, is not akin to some magic weight-loss pill.

7 Things People With Clean Kitchens Do Every Day

Do you hate to cook? Do you turn your nose when entering your kitchen and hurry out the door once your microwave beeps, signaling your frozen burrito is ready? And if we're really being honest, have you forgotten the last time you changed out your sponge or scrubbed the stove free of pasta-sauce splatters? It sounds like you have a messy kitchen. Marie Kondo, the New York Times bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up sympathizes. That's why she developed a system, which is called the KonMari Method, that allows anyone, even the seemingly hopelessly messy, can take on successfully.

If you're curious about her unique purging technique, read about my experience of using the KonMari Method in my kitchen. After you've trashed all the dishware, cooking tools, and pantry items that don't "spark joy" - aka make you happy when you see, touch, and use them - it's time to take on these daily habits of people with clean kitchens to keep your own space neat without intense effort.

  • Keep Everything Off the Kitchen Counter
  • I know, this one seems like a tough one, yet your blender, sugar bowl, coffee maker, and other knickknacky things not only take up space on your counter, but they also actually make it impossible to clean. They gather dust and oily muck on and around them, and you ignore it. The person with a clean kitchen wipes down all appliances, etc. with a warm, damp sponge before storing the items in shelves or cabinets. Yes, even those things they use every day.

  • Wipe the Stove, Sink, and Counter With Each Use
  • Marie Kondo says, "Tidying your kitchen means wiping away any water or oil." If there's nothing on your stove, sink, or counter, it suddenly becomes really easy to run a sponge over these areas every day to clean up any splashes or spills. Ta-da! No crumbs or mysterious stains to be seen.

  • Keep Dish Soap and Sponges Under the Sink
  • Having tried this out myself, I can attest to its effectiveness. After washing dishes, simply squeeze out the sponge and keep it in a wire sponge holder under the sink along with your soap and rubber gloves. It's a surprising trick to keep your kitchen looking neat and inviting.

  • Store the Trash Can Under the Sink
  • There's something off-putting about having a trash can in the middle of the kitchen, even one with a sleek stainless steel design. Storing your trash can under the sink keeps it out of sight and out of mind. I also love taking the trash out more frequently so my kitchen never smells.

  • Wash and Dry Dishes Immediately
  • If you have a drying rack in your kitchen, get rid of it! It makes it all too easy to pile on the dishes without ever putting them away, plus the wet drippings pool and grow all sorts of gnarly things. Instead, do as the tidy person does and wash and dry the dishes immediately after a meal.

  • Keep About 30 Percent of Your Fridge Empty
  • Ever wonder where you are going to put your leftovers or newly bought groceries? If you always have a few clear spots in your fridge, it makes it easy to find a designated spot for new things.

  • Give Each Thing a Definite Home (Away From the Stove)
  • Though it's tempting to want to stash kitchen tools, spices, oils, etc. near the kitchen stove for easy access, this is a recipe for disaster. As things cook, the oil often splatters onto these items. In addition, the heat can drastically reduce the storage life of spices and oils, rendering them stale and rancid. Instead, store everything away from the stove. Before cooking, pull out all the equipment and food stuff you may need, and put each thing away, item by item, after its use. This makes cleanup way easier.

Are Egg Whites Healthier Than Egg Yolks?

Chock-full of protein, eggs are a quick and easy way to get this essential nutrient anytime of the day. From omelets in the morning to quiche at night, you may be shying away from the yolks to save calories and cholesterol. The yolk may contain all the fat, but it also contains most of the vitamins and nutrients. Take a look at the comparison below to see what you may be missing when you only eat the whites.

1 egg white 1 egg yolk 1 whole egg
Calories 16 54 71
Total fat (g) 0 5 5
Saturated fat (g) 0 2 2
Cholesterol (mg) 0 211 211
Sodium (mg) 55 8 70

Potassium (g) 53.8 18.5 67
Selenium (mcg) 6.6 9.5 15.8
Omega-3s (mg) 0 38.8 37

The yolks are where it's at if you're looking to up your intake of vitamins A, B12, and D, as well as your daily calcium, folate, and omega-3s. If it's cholesterol you're worried about, the recommended limit is about 300 mg a day. That means you could enjoy an egg a day if you wanted to, but it's important to be mindful about how much meat, cheese, and other dairy products you eat during the rest of the day.

The following week, after warming up for the first 10 minutes, run for three minutes and walk for three minutes, keeping the last two segments at two minutes each, then cool down with walking. The Story of Harry Potter's Invisibility Cloak May Be WAY Darker Than We Thought

For many Harry Potter fans, one of the most iconic parts of the entire series is the "Tale of the 3 Brothers," a supposed legend from The Tales of Beedle the Bard that has very real implications for Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The tale of Cadmus, Ignotus, and Antioch Peverell's quest to defy death turns out to be real, inspiring Lord Voldemort to seek out their famed possessions: three gifts from Death called the Deathly Hallows. Luckily for Harry, he already owns one (the invisibility cloak) as a distant descendant of the Peverell clan.

As intriguing as the story is, one Reddit user's dark theory about the Deathly Hallows adds another element of mystery to the Peverell legend.

The Perevell Brothers [theory] [spoilers] from harrypotter

The theory - which purports that perhaps the three brothers were necromancers summoning the dead - establishes the idea that the three hallows are bits of Death's own arsenal, intended to curse the men who strove to bridge the gap between life and death. The Elder Wand is a bit of Death itself, which can summon immediate death through the killing curse. The Resurrection Stone is part of the arch that holds the veil of Death. And the Cloak of Invisibility is a bit of the veil itself, the gateway through which the dead pass. Sound familiar?

Harry himself sees this archway of death with his own eyes, theorizes the Redditor, in the Department of Mysteries during Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He hears the whispers of the dead through the arch and witnesses his godfather Sirius pass from the side of the living over to the side of the dead. His possession of the invisibility cloak could explain why he is able to hear these whispers at all and why he is so intently drawn to the Veil of Death during his time in the Department of Mysteries. If he truly bridges the gap between life and death, it means that Harry isn't fully alive.

What do you think about this theory? Could Harry's ownership of the cloak mean that he bridges the gap between death and life? Let us know in the comments!

This Woman Looks EXACTLY Like Elsa Come to Life

Even though Frozen came out in 2013 (yes . . . really), we're still obsessed with everything about it. It's not just the incredible soundtrack; we can't get enough of the intricate braids and the wintry makeup. We knew we weren't the only ones to have a serious case of Frozen fever (sorry, had to!), but we're really impressed by Brazilian veterinarian Andressa Damiani, who took her love of cartoons - and Elsa in particular - to the next level.

According to The Mirror, Andressa grew up being teased for her doll-like appearance, but once she reached her 20s, she embraced her looks. She now plays up her delicate features and enormous eyes with subtle makeup and contact lenses and almost exclusively wears pastel colors. This has led to complete strangers calling her Elsa in passing.

"I love when people compare me to dolls or Disney's Elsa on the street now," she said. "I really identify with her character."

While you may think this is a little bizarre, Andressa believes that by ditching society's beauty expectations, she's become a stronger person. "Looking like a human doll has helped my self-esteem," she explained. "Feeling pretty and confident is important and not as futile as some may think. I feel pretty this way." Read on to see more photos of her!

The Easy Eating Formula For Getting Rid of Body Fat

If you feel soft in the middle, you can either thank your mother for inheriting her blessed genetic predisposition for belly flab or your sweet kiddos who were created there. Whatever the reason, if you'd much rather have a sleeker midsection, as a mom of two, I can totally relate.

Although it's impossible to spot-reduce fat from specific areas, we've enlisted the help of Christmas Abbott, CrossFit competitor and author of The Badass Body Diet ($28), to help us ditch our pinch-more-than-an-inch tummies. As a formerly "skinny fat" woman who transformed her body through CrossFit and a dialed-in diet, Christmas understands how real women feel and also what they need to do to get the body they crave. "Food is your foundation, and fitness is the accessory," says Christmas. She believes that every meal and snack needs to embrace the macronutrient trifecta of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats to help reduce overall body fat, which will aid in reducing stubborn belly fat.

Christmas explains that all food can be categorized into a protein, a carbohydrate, or a fat. "You can't go wrong by dividing your plate into thirds and filling each section with a primo protein, primo carbohydrate, and primo fat." There are only two foods Christmas says to avoid - processed foods and alcohol - since these contribute to unwanted fat. If you want to know specifics about how many of each to eat, The Badass Body Diet outlines a diet plan based on your personal body type and goals.

What about exercise? Short, high-intensity training sessions are proven to help reduce belly fat faster than steady-state cardio. Below are some great examples of this type of workout.

And once the belly fat begins to dissolve, you'll want to reveal a carved, toned core with this 10-minute ab workout. Working out three times a week is great if you're starting out, then you can add additional days as your body becomes stronger. As a CrossFit competitor, Olympic lifter, and head trainer at CrossFit HQ, Christmas also makes a point that your workouts should be fun so you stick with them longer.

Don't Worry, Guys - Prince William Totally Winged His Proposal Too

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been together for almost 14 years now (despite that one little breakup), and we have been loving all of the memories they've made in their time together so far. We've seen a wedding, two beautiful children, numerous trips around the world, and adorable PDA. But while so many wonderful things have happened for the couple since they tied the knot in April 2011, everyone always loves to relive a good proposal story. So how exactly did William pop the question? During the pair's vacation in Kenya in October 2010, the prince asked Kate to marry him in their secluded log cabin, where he presented her with a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire ring, the same one worn by his late mother, Princess Diana.

The beautiful location was also extra special, as it holds a dear place in William's heart. He opened up about why he chose to do it in Africa during an interview with CNN, explaining, "I regularly daydream. Africa is definitely one of the places I go to. It does completely settle me down. [Kate] understands what it means to me being in Africa, and my love of conservation." But while it all came together perfectly, William also admitted that he sort of winged the whole thing. "I didn't really plan it that far in advance," he continued. "I just knew I wanted it to feel comfortable where I did it and I wanted it to mean something, other than just the act of getting engaged." And it turns out that Kate didn't see it coming either. "We were out there with friends, so I really didn't expect it at all," she told Britain's ITV News. "It was a total shock when it came. Very excited!"
