Hot or Cold: What's the Best Way to Shower After a Workout?
Have you heard of recovery showers? Apparently there's a better way to rinse off after an intense workout - one that boosts recovery. Best part? It's not an ice bath.
The concept of a "recovery shower" is alternating temperatures from hot to cold. Is this an effective way to stimulate circulation and aid in muscular recovery? "There is no yes or no answer to this question," said Dr. Kristin Maynes, PT, DPT. "We all have to remember that every person's body is different and may react to certain therapies differently." That said, she totally recommends recovery showers.
"Yes, it can be an effective aid to muscle or injury recovery; however only for someone without an acute injury," she told POPSUGAR. So as this is a great general method for recovery, keep in mind that if you're dealing with an injury, you'll need to discuss this with your own physical therapist. "If there is no injury, it [can] speed up the recovery process, keep the body mobile, and prevent stiffness." Here's how the recovery shower works:
First, Cold
"After a workout, you want to start off with cold - an ice bath or cold shower - to aid in the decrease in inflammation of muscles, joints, and tendons," said Dr. Maynes. Exercise inflames these parts of your body, and as she put it, "it's unhealthy to be in an inflamed state for prolonged periods of time."
The cold water locally decreases blood flow, reducing inflammation, stiffening the muscles and joints - thus decreasing pain (just like icing an injury). This is "very important for immediate recovery and works well in the acute stages of injury or right after a workout," she said. "It is like a 'pause' button in the healing process to decrease the body's quick response to injury, which can be very painful at times."
Then Hot
Then switch to hot. "This will improve muscle and joint recovery to flush out all the build up of inflammatory cells, dead cells, scar tissue build up, etc. to improve the health of the bones." Going from cold to hot also helps with potential stiffness. You know how you sometimes can't walk after leg day? Try a cold-to-hot shower. "This can also aid in improvement of mobility of body structures so stiffness does not set in," she said. "This is very good to use in the subacute and chronic stages of an injury."
That said, if you're injured, she stressed that this is not the way to recover. "You do not want to use heat in the first few days up to a week of an injury," so avoid this kind of recovery shower.
The Best Workout Recovery?
Post-workout recovery is essential, and it varies for everyone. "If you are active in aiding your recovery after an intense workout [with] stretching, foam rolling, yoga, etc., then adding an alternating hot shower or an ice bath is going to help," said Dr. Maynes. "Find out what works best for your body whether it be hot shower, ice bath, or both; stick to it and it will help you."
But be patient! "Nothing works in a day; you have to do it more than once to see an effect."

Even If You Think NYE Is Highly Overrated, You'll Want One of Reformation's New Party Dresses

"We're longtime fans of Ref and it's awesome to celebrate their mission of sustainability and work together with like-minded women. Paula Deen's Transformative Way to Scramble Eggs
You will never make scrambled eggs another way after learning Paula Deen's method. When I spoke to the Southern chef a few weeks back, she told me her unique method of scrambling eggs:
"We can't operate without Vidalia onions out here. I like to fry the onions and mix with my scrambled eggs. I use water instead of milk. Water makes them lighter. Water doesn't make it as tough as milk. I cook them on low, and use half bacon drippings and half butter, so you have the best of both worlds. I like to put a lid on my scrambled eggs, turning them all at once. If you cook them too fast, it makes them not so good."
So, geared up with bacon grease, Vidalia onions, my favorite salted butter (Kerrygold), and some eggs, I got to work. The results tasted more delicious than I could have imagined. Curious about how to re-create this at home? Here's some step-by-step instruction.

She's the first commoner to become queen of Spain, and over the 12 years she's been part of the royal family, she has been through ups (the birth of the heir to the throne of Spain) and downs (personal tragedy, including the loss of her grandmother). Emma Roberts Picked This $60 Winter Coat Right Off the Racks
Only LA weather would let you get away with wearing a denim mini skirt and a furry coat, which is why we were a little jealous of Emma Roberts's outfit when we saw her. For her shopping trip, Emma wore a colorblock Tory Burch sweater and styled the top with something a little less pricey - a $60 coat from Forever 21. While the sweater was cute and definitely festive for the holidays, it was really her jacket that stole the attention.
The luxe-looking coat perfectly complemented her outfit, making Emma a master of the high-low style. To recreate your own version of Emma's outfit, shop her exact sweater ahead. Although the coat isn't available anymore, we did find similar picks below to fit everyone's price range.
After 3 Back Surgeries, Bar Method Helped Me Find the Joy in Exercising
I never expected to utter the words “joy” and “exercise” in the same sentence. Then, two years ago, on a whim and with a little convincing from my best friend, I tried The Bar Method. To this day, I take classes five and sometimes six times a week. I spring out of bed every morning at 5 a.m. and put on my grippy socks to ensure I don’t miss one of my favorite hours of the day. But it wasn't always that way.
As a child, I was never very active. I did gymnastics, but I was never into sports. My love of gymnastics came to grinding halt when I was 10 years old and learned that I had a pretty severe case of scoliosis (curvature of the spine). In just one year, I endured three extensive surgeries. I don’t want go into too many gory details, but the ordeal involved rib removal, spine twisting, and a Herrington rod (metal rod that was inserted and screwed into my spine along one side to straighten my spine) coming loose.
When it was over, I was three inches taller but a hell of a lot less flexible. Prior to the surgery, I could do backbends and bridges, but afterwards, I could only move at my neck and bend at my hips - everything in between was as straight as an arrow. With this limited flexibility and my exceptional caution, I just stopped being active, and I always had a doctor's note that allowed me to pass gym with little effort. I knew after my surgeries I would never gain the same flexibility, but I should have been able to maintain strength. Unfortunately, the fear of more surgeries and just exceptional caution lead to me a path of weakness in both my core and back.
When I heard friends say they loved exercise, I thought they were crazy, but deep in the back of my brain, I was a little jealous. As an adult, I would entertain the idea of exercise for a few months - with yoga, crazy circuit training, and gym memberships - but nothing stuck, and I hated all of it. Looking back now, I realize I was always haunted by my three back surgeries; I was fearful that overexerting myself would result in more surgeries. And after years of babying my back, much of my muscle had atrophied.
But then I tried The Bar Method - a low-impact full-body workout that utilizes a ballet barre for many of the exercises and stretches. From the beginning, the classes were incredibly hard and intense, but to my surprise, I found myself craving them. I started slowly, going no more than three times per week, and I always did the easy or modified versions of the exercises.
Throughout those early classes, my back never hurt and I never felt as if I couldn't do the exercises. The amazing Bar Method teachers taught me which exercises I needed to modify and truly helped me focus on engaging my back and core (muscles I hadn't used in years, but I could feel my muscles' memory kicking in). Within the first couple weeks, my first win was when I realized I could stand up, bend over, and actually touch the floor. I hadn't been this flexible since I was a kid.
After several months, I began to understand the joy of exercising regularly: not only did it help clear my head but also I left class with less stress. A common phrase you hear from instructors in Bar Method class is “good choices” when you challenge yourself just a little more, like going from doing push-ups on your knees to doing them on your toes.
In turn, I began to focus on my own wellness and to realize that life is full of choices, both in barre class and out. I slowly increased my schedule to five classes per week, and after the first year, I switched to the 6 a.m. class from the evening classes to ensure I never missed a session. Every class, I challenge myself to try something new or just to stretch a little further. If I am tired, I trust the instructors, who come to know your abilities and always push you a little harder.
It took me 20-plus years to discover the joy of exercising - and my love for it wasn't instant. It took time and the realization that those small challenges and movements during class have changed my body, helped me gain muscle strength, and improved my flexibility throughout. Yes, I also lost weight, but honestly, I am more proud of the strength I have gained over the last two years, and I have slowly gained confidence in my back! If you have had scoliosis surgery or other back problems or just haven't found "your" exercise, I highly suggest trying The Bar Method. If that doesn’t ignite your passion, keep looking; you never know when you will find the thing that makes you spring out of bed every day at 5 a.m.

Mom's Emotional Letter on Her Girls' Adoption: "I Don't Love You 'Like You're My Own'"
When Jamie adopted her two youngest daughters and officially expanded her family to six, she commemorated the occasion with a heartfelt letter that explains exactly how much these little ones are loved.
On this day, Jamie cherished the fact that there is no longer a prefix, subtext, or "sort of" to their relationship. "You're not my foster daughter, I don't love you 'like you're my own,'" the mom-of-four shared on her blog, Foster the Family. "Today you are wholly, completely, for forever my daughter."
When the girls were first dropped off at their home, Jamie explained that she and her husband chose to love them like daughters and that they made this decision before they even had a chance to fall in love with them. "But the falling happened. After bursting into our family, you eased into our lives and hearts," Jamie wrote. "The formalities of our state-regulated, court-appointed, 'temporary' relationship faded away. We dropped the 'foster' from your title, and you simply became 'daughter.'"
She then eloquently explained how this day was different than when she birthed her oldest two children. Instead, it felt most similar to when she married their new daddy. "I met him. Then I fell in love with him, knew I would spend the rest of my life with him, and then came the day to make it official," she explained. "Papers were signed, names were changed, ceremonies were had, but I didn't love him any more than I had the day before. He was the same. I was the same. Nothing had changed. But everything had. After that day, we belonged to each other, officially, forever."
As she concluded her monumental note, Jamie vowed to love both girls forever on the day when nothing and yet everything changed.
I believe that, as of today, our family is now complete. That the six of us will be at this "family" thing, just us, forever. As far as I can see, our growing family has finished growing. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe others will join this little unit of ours. But, I know, I know, that no matter what, we are a family now. Forever.
This day, this adoption day, is one of the happiest days of my life. Today, I become your mother. Today, you become my daughter.
Happy Adoption Day, my dear daughter, I love you.Love,
Mommy

12 Ways You're Using Your Beautyblender Totally Wrong
The Beautyblender isn't your grandmother's makeup sponge. There's a reason professional and YouTube makeup artists keep more than one in their kits at all times. Since the brand launched over 10 years ago, it has become an insider favorite and created a new category of edgeless sponge applicators (with plenty of knockoffs available).
The main question we get when someone sees us with the pink egg: "Is it worth the money?" Yes. The Beautyblender will cost you $20 (which is about 19 more dollars than the cheap triangle versions at the drugstore). But you'll get a dewy, airbrushed finish you can't achieve with brushes alone.
There are a few things you need to know before you run out and buy one. Consider this your Beautyblender owner's manual straight from the product creator, Rea Ann Silva. Avoid these 12 mistakes to keep you from getting mold, tears, or stains in your prized beauty tool.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Chicken Breasts
It's no secret that boneless, skinless chicken breasts aren't the most exciting ingredient, but they're certainly one of the most popular among home cooks. If you're feeling totally uninspired by your usual chicken recipes, allow these chef-approved tips to get you out of your rut. Here's how some of the best Food Network personalities and more of our favorite celebrity cooks transform their chicken breasts.
Alton Brown: Pounded Thin
Alton Brown's recipe is for chicken kiev, a popular dish that involves pounding the chicken breasts thin before stuffing them with herbed butter, coating them in breadcrumbs, and frying them. Alton's pro tip is to refrigerate the rolled-up, stuffed chicken breasts for at least an hour so they stay intact while being fried, so you don't have to worry about pesky butcher's twine.
Ina Garten: Lemon on Lemon
Ina's lemon chicken breasts recipe has a five-star rating out of more than 600 reviews, and it's easy to see why. She makes sure there's maximum lemon flavor by baking the chicken breasts with plenty of zest, juice, and wedges.
Chrissy Teigen: With a Brick
Yes, an actual brick. Once you try the technique in Chrissy Teigen's brick chicken recipe, you might never go back.
Rachael Ray: Spinach and Mushroom Stuffed
Rachael Ray's spinach- and mushroom-stuffed chicken is further proof that stuffing your food is always a good idea. A filling made of spinach, mushrooms, ricotta, parmesan, and garlic results in chicken that's anything but bland.
Giada De Laurentiis: Piccata
Giada's foolproof chicken piccata is the ultimate Italian-style chicken dinner. With a short list of impactful ingredients (butter, lemon juice, chicken stock, and capers), you can make your own restaurant-worthy chicken.
Ted Allen: Parmesan-Crusted
When in doubt, add parmesan cheese. Chopped host Ted Allen recommends baking the chicken in a crunchy crust of panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese.
What Exactly Is Taboo About? The Scoop on Tom Hardy's New Show
While Tom Hardy is a verified movie star, the actor is no stranger to TV. Every so often, he pops up on Peaky Blinders, and he has a crazy-looking new series of his own: Taboo. He created it alongside his father, Chips Hardy, and writer Steven Knight, who wrote Eastern Promises and, not coincidentally, Peaky Blinders. The drama is also executive-produced by Ridley Scott, and it looks insane. Here's the beginner's guide to everything you need to know about the show!
The Plot
James Keziah Delaney (Hardy) returns home to London after years traveling the world. He's been gone so long that people, including his own family, thought he must have died on his trip. He's come back to claim his stake on his father's shipping empire, but the family's dirty business tactics affect his life in terrible ways. Oh yeah, and there's black magic involved.
The Cast
In addition to Tom Hardy, Taboo stars Oona Chaplin, a Spanish actress you may notice from the "White Christmas" episode of Black Mirror. Jonathan Pryce (aka the High Sparrow from Game of Thrones), Franka Potente, and Michael Kelly are also in it.
The Trailer
The Premiere Date
The show is initially premiering in the UK on BBC One but will begin airing on FX on Jan. 10.
This Is Why We're Sure 2017 Will Be Selena Gomez's Best Year Yet
This was a wild year for Selena Gomez. Though the singer and actress started with a world tour to promote her hit album Revival and appeared on every red carpet, including at the Met Gala and the Oscars Vanity Fair party, by the time August rolled around, Selena was ready for a break, saying she wanted to concentrate on caring for herself after her diagnosis of lupus brought on side effects of depression and anxiety.
After 90 days away, a period in which we collectively rooted for Selena, we were happy to see her make her return to the spotlight with an emotional speech at the American Music Awards in November. Now that Selena is healthy and feels strong, we can only expect 2017 to be her best, most in-control year yet. Scroll ahead for our predictions of what we think Selena will be tackling this year.

How 1 Sneaky Kitten Ruined a Girl's Christmas Surprise Will Leave You in Hysterics
If this moment when a 3-year-old girl was trying to open up her holiday surprise wasn't so funny, it would definitely be a Christmas fail.
Heather Brooker and her husband had planned on giving their daughter a cat, and when Christmas morning arrived, they waited until the child had already opened up her other gifts before bringing out one last box. However, the kitten had another idea in mind - as well as epic comedic timing - and managed to slip out of the box without the child noticing. Instead of being overcome with happy tears when she opened the box to discover her new pet, this little girl was left completely confused with an empty box and a priceless reaction.
Heather described on her website how she and her husband spent months brainstorming how they would pull off the surprise before deciding on letting their daughter "open" the cat as a final gift from Santa Claus. "It would be perfect!" she wrote. "But sometimes when you plan things, they don't end up the way you thought they would. They turn out even better."

Chrissy Teigen Gave Away Her Holiday Dress For the Sweetest Cause
After Chrissy Teigen wore a holiday-red velvet dress on Lip Sync Battle, paired with a Santa Claus hat and strappy pumps, some of us couldn't get it out of our heads. (It was a good look, can you blame us?) But Rebecca Howe, a big fan with high hopes, sent out a tweet to the supermodel:
@chrissyteigen but seriously when you're done with that red dress from this week's @SpikeLSB can I have it please 😍
- Rebecca Howe (@Rebecca_Howe42) December 23, 2016
Seeing that Chrissy is always tracking her social media accounts, we weren't surprised to find she quickly responded to the request. Andrew Garfield Goes For an Oceanside Stroll With His Parents Over the Holidays
Andrew Garfield has been having a pretty amazing last few months. After generating plenty of Oscar buzz for his roles in both Hacksaw Ridge and Silence, he took a break from his busy schedule to spend quality time with his parents, Lynn and Richard. The adorable trio stepped out the day after Christmas in Malibu, CA, and hit the beach for a leisurely stroll. Andrew linked arms with his dad (who was rocking matching sunglasses with his son, naturally), while his mom walked along behind them. Not a bad way to keep the inevitable postholiday depression at bay, right? Thanks to Andrew's multiple nominations in upcoming award shows, we'll likely be seeing a lot more of him soon. Here's hoping he'll bring his parents as his dates to at least one of the big events!

If you have a December birthday, then you can definitely relate to Kit Harington's latest video. During an interview with W magazine, the Game of Thrones actor opened up about what it's like having a birthday the day after Christmas. Not only is it amid the holiday chaos, but his birthday actually falls on another holiday in England: Boxing Day. While Kit complains about the lack of presents, he does admit that he always gets to spend the day surrounded by family and friends. "I just never get enough attention," he admitted. "But I never get enough attention." Well, we would definitely beg to differ!
Our Baby Was Killed at Day Care - and It Wasn't an "Accident"
His death could have been prevented. YourTango shares the story of Shepard Dodd's life via his father, Derek.
Shepard was an unnaturally happy and healthy 11-week-old baby boy. He would smile until something needed to be corrected. He would cry, you would fix it, then he would smile again. He was a special baby to my wife and I after years of infertility, and he had a life ahead with limitless possibilities.
Which is why on April 6, 2015, our world changed forever.
We chose an in-home day-care provider in Oklahoma (where we reside) to watch Shepherd. The woman was highly recommended by a friend and she would only watch teacher's kids. This meant she would be closed during the Summers and school breaks, which was great for us because I'm a teacher.
On April 6, I left for work early and was able to kiss Shepard and Ali goodbye. I will never forget him looking over for me and smiling. Shepard had only been going to the in-home day care for five days when Ali took him on that Monday. He had his first runny nose that weekend and had woken up that morning with congestion, but he was in good spirits, so we weren't overly worried.
Ali messaged the day-care provider about using a rock'n'play for sleeping so that Shepard could be on an incline instead of having to lie on his back. Originally she agreed, but when Ali arrived and saw what it was, she couldn't let him sleep in it.
In fact, this childcare giver confided that she had been cited by the Department of Human Services (DHS) 10 days earlier for allowing another infant to fall asleep in a swing, and that they told her how dangerous both car seats and swings were for babies to sleep in.
On that Monday, as Ali was unpacking her diaper bag, she realized that she had forgotten the bottles so she ran back home. She was very concerned about Shepard getting sick if she were to lay him down flat for his naps. While she was home, she grabbed her Ergo 360 carrier that our childcare giver had used before so she wouldn't have to put him down if she didn't want to.
Ali also requested a doctor's note for the caregiver so she would also have the option to use the rock'n'play. When Ali returned, the childcare giver reported that she had come up with a plan: she would sit the rock'n'play in front of the couch so Shepard could nap in it, so if DHS stopped by to "check on her," she could just pick him up and answer the door with him.
This ensured she wouldn't get in trouble. Ali, feeling confident the attention Shepard would be getting would be more than sufficient, left to go to her morning meetings and notified our childcare giver that our doctor was faxing her the note for the rock'n'play at 9:45 a.m.
At 12:51 p.m., the daycare provider called Ali and told her she needed to come quickly. The childcare giver reported that Shepard wasn't breathing. She had called 911, and a police officer and EMTs had responded.
Ali asked her to give the phone to an EMT, and after speaking with him she knew the situation wasn't good. Ali called me. In the middle of teaching a class I had to answer the phone to Ali saying I had to go, that Shepard wasn't breathing.
I ran to the truck and drove way too fast to the day-care provider's home. When I arrived, they were wheeling my son out of the house on a stretcher. They were still working on him, but told me that they had yet to get his heart going or him breathing on his own.
As I rode in the van in front of the ambulance, I had to prepare myself for life without my son and the grief that would follow. When we arrived at the hospital, as they wheeled him past me into the ER, I gave him a kiss on the forehead.
He was cold.
As they were working on our son, the attending physician came over and told us that they would try another push of epinephrine and two more rounds of CPR, and then they would have to call it.
Surrounded by doctors and nurses with looks of pity, and police officers, detectives, and DHS officials waiting to interview us, we had to say goodbye to our son, intubated on a stretcher.
Unbeknownst to us, our childcare provider had been educated by DHS for the swing violation where she was specifically counseled about safe sleep practices. The next day, DHS returned due to the serious violation, and she was reminded again of the dangers of putting a child in a swing.
It's documented in her public file that she specifically inquired about infants napping in their car seats. DHS told her that sleeping in the car seat was a dangerous practice and would increase the chances of SIDS. She was told this just 10 days before she chose to put our child in an unbuckled car seat on the floor, swaddled, where he wiggled down until he lost his airway and suffocated to death.
He was unable to alert anyone to the terrible trouble he was in because the door was closed and there was no monitor to catch his struggle. In addition, our childcare provider was distracted by her friend who had stopped by around lunchtime so she could drop off her 2-year-old while she went and had lunch with other moms.
TWO HOURS passed before she finally checked on Shepard and found him completely blue.
The childcare provider has never been charged with any crime. Shepard's case is still open and we're hopeful as a family that justice will find her in this world or the next.
This wasn't an accident.
She knew that a car seat wasn't safe for sleep and that two hours is much too long to leave an infant behind a closed door.
Shepard's death doesn't have to be in vain. Unsafe sleep surfaces are a REAL danger. We're looking to focus the attention to safe sleep standards so they can protect Oklahoma's children from negligent decisions.
Follow Ali & Derek's nonprofit (in honor of their son Shepard) for more updates.

11 Products That Will Keep You Looking Flawless as You Transition to Natural Hair
Managing transitioning hair is a lot like dating. It requires the patience of a kindergarten teacher and you need to connect with a variety of prospects (beauty products) before lo and behold, you meet your match. Talk about stressful!
We've read endless reviews of shampoos, deep conditioners, and leave-ins equipped with moisturizing and detangling qualities for ladies embarking on the journey from relaxed to natural hair. While it's important to nourish your kinks and curls to prevent breakage, avoid jumping on the product-heavy bandwagon.
"Women who are transitioning must understand the importance of maintaining the balance of moisture and protein," says Noël Reid-Killings, celebrity and master hairstylist of Noël New York Salon. "New naturals aren't familiar with their natural texture and tend to gravitate towards moisturizing products unnecessarily. What's often seen as dry hair is really just a coarse hair texture. Over moisturizing can be dangerous and cause more tangling with the relaxed hair, leading to breakage."
As you get acquainted with your new tresses and find the right system for your routine, it's time to consider styling essentials and must-have products to make everyday maintenance much more manageable. Hot tools for occasional straight styles, a feel-good detangling brush for wash days (finally!), and vibrant head wraps that can make a three-days-old twist-out look bomb are just a few of our favorites for transitioning hair.
Click through for more details on these and a few other gems you'll want for your arsenal if the big chop wasn't for you. You're one step closer to happy transitioning tresses!

A Stranger's Unexpected Act of Kindness That Changed Everything For 1 Pregnant Waitress
Sarah Clark was preparing herself for an exciting yet difficult upcoming start to 2017. At nine months pregnant, the Arizona waitress was working her last shifts before starting unpaid maternity leave in January. Unfortunately, her fiancé is also having surgery this week and will be recovering, while temporarily out of work due to the procedure, for months.
However, a customer who was also pregnant and moved by Sarah's circumstances took it upon herself to leave this expecting mom a shocking tip: $900. "I couldn't believe what I was looking at because it was such a high amount," Sarah told CBS News. "Nine hundred dollars is a lot of money. It took a while for it to set in, and once it did I cried for a little while. You always hear about these things happening, but you never expect to be the recipient of it."
Along with the generous tip, the woman left a note on the receipt before picking up her takeout order and leaving. "This is God's money - He gave it to us so we could give it to you. God bless," the unidentified woman wrote.
Sarah and the kind woman had chatted several times when the patron was in the restaurant before and Sarah said she didn't even notice the tip until the woman had already left. "I don't know if she really understands how much this is going to help us this season," Sarah said. "Me being on maternity leave and him being out of work, we're not going to be making any income. So this is really going to help with rent and other bills and things like that."

Directed by photographer Sasha Samsonova and featuring music from Niia (that will soon be featured on everybody's sex playlist), the steamy video - which was released on Christmas as Kylie's "surprise gift to the world" - shows the reality star getting hot and heavy with her boyfriend in the shower.
