My Husband's Cancer Made Me a Better Mom

People told me that having a child would slow me down, but it did just the opposite. Once I gave birth I went into overdrive from a career perspective. I suddenly wanted prove that I could accomplish just as much even though I was a mother. I went back to work at my high pressure startup job shorting after giving birth and then I even decided to start my own company, Winnie, to help parents go out and do things with their kids. Ironically though, I was so busy working that I hardly ever got to go out and do things with my own family. Even when I was out with my daughter, I had my phone and was usually replying to some email or trying to multitask. With limited hours in the day to get work done I obsessively tried to maximize every second of my time.

My workaholism meant that when my daughter was 6 months old and my husband started experiencing weird health issues, I didn't have time to care. I was too wrapped up in my own work and needs that I ignored his complaints about his tonsils being so swollen he could barely swallow. My husband went to a few doctors but the best they could come up with was some unknown infection or virus causing his symptoms and prescribed him some antibiotics. I figured whatever it was, it would clear up, eventually.

But a couple months passed and things only seemed to get worse with his tonsils. Then the lymph nodes in his neck started getting swollen too. One of the doctors he was seeing recommended he get his tonsils taken out. They thought he had a bad case of tonsillitis and removing his tonsils would make it all better.

My husband scheduled a tonsillectomy but then my work got in the way. I had a big work dinner with an investor to attend on the same day of his tonsillectomy, so I decided it wasn't a convenient time for my husband to have surgery. We pushed his surgery back a couple weeks until my mom could fly out and help us. Finally my husband got his surgery. After the doctors removed his tonsils, they were able to examine the tissue more closely and discovered the reason for all his symptoms were that his tonsils were riddled with cancer - Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma - an aggressive cancer that swiftly kills you if not treated. By the time they caught it it had already spread to a few lymph nodes in his neck. All because I was too busy for him to take care of things sooner.

My husband had to endure six grueling rounds of chemotherapy, and during that fight for his life he wasn't up for doing much of anything besides resting in bed. As I took care of both him and my daughter, I longed for the days when the three of us would go to the park or out to brunch. I realized that all that time I spent looking down at my phone and checking email was time I could have spent making memories with my family. I was too busy trying to squeeze in my work to every ounce of free time that I had neglected my most important job - being there for my family. My daughter had his first birthday right smack in the middle of my husband's intense cancer treatment and I realized then that I would never get that first year back. I had squandered it and I vowed never to let that happen again.

Now that my husband's intense cancer treatment is over, we are able to spend time together as a family and I no longer try to multitask during that time. We eat dinner together as a family every night and our weekends are reserved for fun adventures. We've become members at a local children's museum, we're regulars at the library, and we frequently venture out to new playgrounds. All this family time is having a positive impact on my daughter. She's learning vocabulary and language skills because I actually look her in the eye when I'm talking to her, instead of down at my phone. She's talking and running and explores the world with confidence, knowing her parents are nearby and paying attention if she needs anything. Her pediatrician told me - for the first time ever - she's ahead of her milestones.

My husband's cancer was an awful experience and I never want us to go through anything like that again, but I'm grateful that it gave me the wakeup call I needed to be a real mom and wife. Now my daughter has an engaged, loving, present parent, instead of the workaholic zombie I was before. My husband is cancer-free and now has a wife who intends to keep things that way, which means putting his health before her work needs.

I'll never get that first year of my daughter's life back but I'm going to work my hardest to make the next ones count. It's my most important job.

Everything You'll Ever Need to Know About Going Platinum Blond

The night before my first appointment at Sally Hershberger Downtown, I examined my dark mane closer than I ever have in all my years as an Asian (that's a lot of years). The way the small lamp on my nightstand bounced off my crown, creating a half-circle glow that starkly contrasted with my black hair, like a halo above my visage, almost moved me to tears. Was I getting cold feet? Maybe. Was I being dramatic? If you say so. But what was certain was that I was going to miss my natural hair color. We'd never been apart from each other before (aside from a failed at-home bleaching attempt at age 13), not even for a Clairol Summer fling.

Luckily, the trepidatious moment was fleeting and I quickly remembered my mission. I was going to become a completely different person the next day. Tomorrow, I would start my two-session transformation from a regular ol' Asian to a platinum blond one, which, barring cosmetic surgery, is probably the most dramatic change an Asian girl can make. Sure, only my hair was being overhauled, but it does make up about 40 percent of me.

Since childhood, I've marveled at the likes of Debbie Harry, then Courtney Love, followed by perennial platinum Gwen Stefani, and most recently Sky Ferreira. I've been coveting their punk-inspired, white-blond manes as something I could only ever dream about, but never have. But as hair technology continued to advance, something miraculous happened: Asian women, who for the most part had only been able to go orange, started to go platinum successfully.

Models Soo Joo Park, Ai Tominaga, and Daul Kim (RIP) set a new bar in the fashion industry by going platinum. Fashion host Amy Pham helped introduce the look to a more mainstream audience, and now throngs of regular Asian girls who had similar dreams of experiencing the yin to their hair yang are following suit. And I was next in line. As quickly as it came, my apprehension evaporated and once again I was eager to finally fulfill a lifelong dream. Only one more night of sleep stood in my way.

Having said all that, going from black to platinum is no joke. It is a serious process. When I met with my brilliant, sweet, devastatingly handsome colorist, Daniel Sanchez (who has worked on Karlie Kloss's mane) at Sally Hershberger for our consultation, he immediately assessed that making my hair platinum would take two sessions and at least eight hours.

After experiencing what ended up being 15 hours total in the salon chair, I can say with confidence that the longer the process, the better the results. Unless you want your hair to go into shock and become straw or, even worse, fall out in clumps, you'll want your colorist to take his or her time and go as gently as possible on your strands. So, armed with my cell phone charger and a pantry of snacks (crackers, pretzels, hummus, beef jerky, and Kind bars), I ventured to Sally Hershberger the next day poised and ready to go platinum.

If you, too, are considering stepping into the light, but are still trepidatious of the process, keep reading to discover exactly what to expect during a black-to-platinum hair color transformation.

15 New Year's Eve Traditions That Might Guarantee Good Luck in 2017

Growing up Latina means that eating grapes at midnight on New Year's is as much of a tradition as watching the ball drop in NYC's Times Square. The details behind that ritual and many more good luck tricks practiced on that night may vary based on your background, but no matter where you're from, all of these seemingly weird activities have one thing in common - making sure you have the most positive year ever.

Here are some traditions you might want to rush into when the clock strikes midnight and announces the beginning of 2017 - you know, just in case! Bonus points if you somehow manage to do all of them at the same time - and if you do, please tell us how you did it.

1. Eat 12 grapes

Let's start with the tradition of all traditions: eating 12 grapes at midnight. Each grape gives you a chance to make a wish, and even if you don't believe all of them will come true, the eating contest is a staple that turns into a fun game to see who can finish their grapes faster and in under a minute.

2. Put money in your shoe

The easiest tradition for the whole family to take part in, even the smallest kids, is to fold a bill inside your shoe and keep it in there through midnight. Variations also include holding the money in your hand or in your pocket, and all supposedly guarantee wealth in the next 12 months.

3. Take a suitcase around the block

One of my favorite memories from being a kid is seeing my cousins and aunts walk around the block with a suitcase on New Year's Eve. Call it a coincidence, but the years they did that were always the years they traveled most, which is the goal of the tradition. I'm a believer!

4. Sip Champagne

OK, almost everyone does this, but toasting with family and friends to the New Year is a must in a Latin household. You better believe the bubbly will be poured at least 10 minutes ahead of midnight with everyone holding a glass in one hand and their grapes in the other.

5. Start the year off on your right foot

Literally. Receive Jan. 1 standing on . . . well, just your right foot, or your year will just not go that great.

6. Color-coordinate your underwear

This tradition is basically a combination of a mood ring and a cootie catcher - a color will determine your fate. Red is set to bring you good luck in love, and yellow is meant to sprinkle luck and prosperity throughout your whole year.

7. Wear your underwear inside out

Once you've settled on what color underwear you want to wear, make sure to wear it inside out, and then swap it back in the first few minutes of the New Year. The desired outcome here is to have plenty of clothes throughout the New Year.

8. Keep a bucket of water handy

A big part of the New Year is starting January with only positive vibes. To do this, many Latin families clean their house from top to bottom. You're taking this tradition to the next level if you also decide to throw a bucket of water out the door (or window).

9. Don't clean your home too much

Yes, you can do some spot cleaning and make sure everything is in order for the night of festivities, but sweeping is out of the question. You don't want to sweep away any good fortune.

10. Burn "año viejos"

When I explain this tradition to some of my friends, they don't understand why a doll is created just to be burnt at midnight, but like most traditions, this is in hopes that whatever/whoever did us wrong in 2015 stays in 2015. In Latin America, you can see these dolls burning in the street. In the US, you might want to create a miniature version and safely do this at home.

11. Choose your outfit wisely

Whether your tradition is to wear all white or wear a completely new outfit from head to toe on New Year's Eve, either will make sure that luck is on your side in 2016.

12. Make a New Year wish list

You might not write a wish list for Santa, but you're definitely writing one for the New Year. You want to make sure you have your list written out, so that you can read it to yourself at midnight.

13. Keep a handful of lentils

This tradition can be done in various ways: one option is to cook the lentils and eat them at any point on the Dec. 31. The second option is to put them in a baggie and hold them in your hand - or put them in your pocket. Either way, this gesture calls for a year of prosperity.

14. Put your candles to good use

Light candles on New Year's Eve as a way to make next year one you can really enjoy. Color is important here as well - red is for love, yellow will help with finances, and green brings good health. If you have kids in your family, have them blow out the candles as a way to ensure they work.

15. Sit and stand . . . then sit again and again

If you're looking to have someone put a ring on your finger in the New Year, sit and stand three times to up your chances of marriage.

A 2-Ingredient Snack to Help You Lose Weight

This avocado-based snack will help you lose weight for two awesome reasons: it's full of healthy fats and fiber. Consuming healthy fats and fiber keeps that "I'm full" feeling going strong, so hunger and cravings will be brushed aside, and you'll be full for hours. Add the protein, crunch, and saltiness of sunflower seeds, and this snack is a weight-loss superstar. It also helps that you can whip it up in two minutes.

  1. Cut an avocado in half. Use the side without the pit, and save the other half for later since the pit can help keep the green flesh from browning.
  2. Sprinkle one tablespoon of salted sunflower seeds in the middle.
  3. Use a spoon to scoop out bites right out of the avocado peel. You don't even need to bother with dirtying a dish.

You've Never Tasted Funfetti Like This Before

We never grow tired of funfetti desserts. The buttery-vanilla flavor combined with the bright rainbow jimmies makes any person happier. That's why when I came across this pin for a funfetti cheese ball, I knew I had to try it at home. Traditionally made with cream cheese, cheese balls are usually savory, and this funfetti version errs on the tart side. It reminds me of cheesecake filling, so it's perfect for sweet Nilla Wafers . . . or salty Club crackers, if you're open to flavor experimentation.

Before getting started, here's what you'll need:

  • 7 ounces plain cream cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups yellow cake mix
  • 1/4 cup rainbow jimmies, plus more for coating
  • 1 box of Nilla Wafers for dipping

Shay Mitchell Has a Really, Really Funny Reason For Wearing This Winter Coat

Thanks to her coat, Shay Mitchell made taking a walk in the woods look ultra glamorous. The star traded in her bikinis for a cream-colored jacket from Revolve Clothing and styled it with blue denim jeans and black boots. The furry coat had just the right amount of flair to catch our attention, but it was Shay's Instagram caption that made us crack up.

The actress lightly made fun of herself for accidentally coordinating with her pup, writing, "No dogs harmed in the making of this faux fur coat . . . I just shop to match him." The dog had actually blended in with her outerwear! While you're busy LOL-ing at Shay's twinning moment with her pup, scroll on to shop her exact Majorelle piece as well as some other coat options ahead.

This Woman Doesn't Put Anything on Her Skin That She Wouldn't Eat

For Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram, who vlogs regularly from her channel, Fully Raw Kristina, going raw vegan wasn't just a choice - it was a necessity. "I used to be a type 2 diabetic, which is essentially hyperglycemic, which is basically someone who is very sick. I used to be extremely underweight," said Kristina.

The daughter of Lebanese and Ecuadorian parents, she grew up eating a high-fat diet. "I basically drank olive oil as a child," Kristina joked. What she wasn't kidding about was the affect it had on her health. "When I was diagnosed at 16, I looked normal, but at 18 I had lost 40 pounds."

That's why Kristina says changing her diet changed her life. "Most people don't realize that food can be medicine, for you mentally, spiritually, physically," Kristina said. For the past decade, Kristina has been a raw vegan - which inspired her YouTube channel - and according to her, it means she consumes a diet made of fresh, whole, unrefined, living, plant-based foods, like fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, which are consumed in their natural state, without cooking or steaming. For her, changing how she consumed food was like medicine.

Kristina has been a raw vegan for 10 years now, which led her to establish a raw organic co-op in Houston and then to her YouTube channel. She's focused on putting food in her body that will cleanse and take care of it, but she's equally as diligent about what she puts on her skin, too. "I don't put anything on my skin that I wouldn't eat," Kristina said. "Your skin is your largest, most absorbable organ on your body. If you're constantly putting a ton of chemicals on your skin, it may affect how you feel."

Check out the full interview to learn more about Kristina and her lifestyle, plus get a supereasy DIY shampoo recipe. You can also pick up Kristina's book, The Fully Raw Diet, out now.

How to Kill Your Sugar Addiction Before It Kills You

While excusing yourself from sugary celebrations is no fun, neither is dealing with a post-sugar-binge hangover. And on top of it, the more sugar you eat, the more you crave - it can take a few days to weeks to get over an addiction to refined sugar once you start. Not only that, but studies have shown that eating too much refined sugar can speed up your body's aging process. If you know you can't resist sweet temptations, read on to learn nutritionist-approved strategies that will keep you on the right track.

  1. Choose wisely: If you're going to indulge, go for seasonal sweets that you know you can't get when it's not the holidays. "You can have chocolate any time of the year," says registered dietitian, nutritionist, and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson Tamara Melton. Go for a seasonal dessert you crave all year, like a treat from an ice cream truck in the Summer or pumpkin pie in the Fall. Just remember that just because these treats are only available for a limited time doesn't mean you should go overboard. Practice portion control by having a plan, Tamara advises.
  2. Think positive: Set yourself up for success by telling yourself that you got this. "Words are powerful," says Kathie Dolgin, author of Sugar Savvy Solution: Kick Your Sugar Addiction for Life and Get Healthy. "If you think resisting sugar is going to be hard, it will be hard. Change that negative self-talk if you are going to take control of your diet and your health. Believe you can do this!"
  3. Not being hungry is key: Don't want to chow down on the entire candy bowl? Set yourself up for success by eating a balanced meal or snack every three to four hours, Tamara says. Simone Gloger, a registered nutritionist and Dukan Diet nutritionist, recommends three protein-rich meals and two protein-rich snacks every day to help you resist cravings. "I usually pack my lunch and snacks each day so I don't give into the temptation that is all around me," Simone says.
  4. Know that cravings might be something else: Before you reach for that peanut butter cup, think about what you really need. "People mistake thirst for hunger or cravings," Kathie says. "That dip in energy that sends you hunting for a snack is often just a sign of dehydration. So hydrate and hydrate and drink water, not juice or soda." Kathie recommends spa water - water infused with your favorite fruits - to hit sugar cravings the natural way. If you are craving a treat, opt for a small piece of dark chocolate or a single-serving yogurt that comes with sweet mix-ins like chocolate or granola, Tamara advises.
  5. Don't dwell: Tried your best, but couldn't resist the siren song of holiday treats? Don't beat yourself up about it. "Forgive yourself and get back on track," Kathie says. "Forgiving and being kind to others (as well as yourself!) boosts self-esteem and gratitude for what you have (thus combating the negative self-talk that can send you running for the cookie jar) and gives you the same endorphin rush as sugar." Afterward, make sure your next meal is only when you are hungry, Tamara says. "Resolve to eat healthier at your next meal, then load up on plenty of fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains. Be sure to also include lean sources of protein, which help to keep you satisfied."

The Bachelor: Everything We Know About the Upcoming Season With Nick Viall

Every time a season of The Bachelorette ends, I just start counting down the time until The Bachelor. Sure, there's always Bachelor in Paradise, but as any fan will tell you, that show has a completely different vibe. Season 21 is about to kick off, and details have slowly been revealed over the past few months. Here's what we know about the upcoming episodes!

Nick Viall Is the Star

Viall has long been a presence in Bachelor Nation, and now it's his turn to be the Bachelor. He's already dated four women on TV, so if he doesn't find love this time around, the rest of us are doomed.

The Contestants Have Been Revealed

The women seeking to steal Nick's heart include an aspiring dolphin trainer, a doula, a pro basketball dancer, and a food truck owner.

News From the Set

Producer Mike Fleiss cataloged all the behind-the-scenes action from the first night of shooting on Sept. 24. Thanks to him, we know that resident diamond expert Neil Lane was on the set (a little early for him, no?) and that one girl was already wearing a wedding veil. As always, helicopters are involved.

There Are Some Very Interesting Rumors

In November, InTouch reported that several of the girls asked to leave the show. "They find him to be completely arrogant and a total diva," their insider said. "A lot of the girls think Nick isn't taking the process seriously, that he only became The Bachelor to hook up with multiple women . . . Nick sheds many tears this season and it's due to the fact that the girls pretty much turn on him. There will be explosive fights - and Nick will once again look like a fool."

Nick Says He Fell for More Than One Girl

On Dec. 28, Nick revealed to People that he developed "strong feelings for multiple women." Uh oh. "Early on with so many women, you obviously don't know a lot of things about them but talking to all of them and wanting to make it meaningful to all of them is very physically taxing."

The Trailer

There's an Official Fantasy League

It look them long enough! ABC has unveiled an official Fantasy League for Bachelor fans. Now you can show off your prediction skills!

The Premiere Date

10 Turmeric-Infused Beauty Products That Will Give You Better Skin

I always thought of turmeric as a zesty spice to put in chili or quinoa salad. When I learned it is actually remarkably soothing and calming for one's skin, I was shocked. The more research I did, the more I realized turmeric is an ingredient in many of my favorite anti-inflammatory remedies.

How can something so spicy and seasoned also be soothing? According to a study published by the University of Maryland Medical center, turmeric has been used for over 4,000 years for a wide variety of medical treatments. Known by its scientific name, Curcuma longa, turmeric has been proven to help heal some infections, cancers, digestive issues, and, most notably, inflammatory conditions. It's a powerful antioxident, widely used in Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese medicine, and has been gaining popularity now in Western medicine, as well.

It sounds downright miraculous. But you may be wondering, how exactly does Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, accomplish all of this? It's known to have antibacterial properties, for starters, which means it's helpful at keeping blemishes at bay and healing small wounds. It also can reduce certain enzymes in the body that are responsible for inflammation. This makes it a great skin care ingredient to soothe irritation. And since the spice is also an antioxidant, it can fight free radicals and reduce some of the damage they might do.

With very low chances of side effects, incorporating turmeric into your beauty routine seems like a no-brainer. Here are 10 luxurious, all-natural products to help get you started!

Watch a Woman Get Transformed Into a Kardashian in 3 Minutes

We know the Kardashian Pretty Committee is essentially a traveling squad of makeup artists and hairstylists, dedicated to getting the girls glam. They have a huge following of their own: each pro has at least 100K followers on Instagram, proving that people are simply intrigued with the Kardashian/Jenner makeup process.

So what could we do to show people how to get their exact look? A tutorial was a must, but instead of DIYing it, we decided to go straight to the source: recruit a member of the Pretty Committee for a full-on transformation. We were lucky enough to book Etienne Ortega, celebrity hair and makeup artist, for the shoot. Etienne has a bevy of celebrity clients, like Hilary Duff, Becky G, and Kelly Rowland, and works on Kim, Khloé, Kendall, and Kylie, meaning he has all of the insider details needed to make the transformation as realistic as possible. (We couldn't confirm if he's gotten his hands on Kourtney.)

As the model for the transformation, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thrilled for this shoot. I really love their makeup look, and I'm a fan of Etienne's in general, so getting the glam treatment and learning his tricks was exciting to me. I could barely sleep the night before - I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve!

The process

It is a lot of makeup, but remember: these women are on-camera a majority of their lives! They need staying power. Plus, you tend to wear more makeup on-camera than not. He doesn't wet the Beauty Blender sponge when he applies the foundation, so even though he buffs the makeup out beautifully, there's more coverage there than when you wet the sponge and blend it out. And one thing to note: no foundation was put near my eye area. Instead, it was covered when he went in for the highlight.

The eyes were relatively simple, which is surprising given how intricate the look seems. Instead of loading up on a ton of coats of mascara, he leaves the drama to individual lashes. The bronze smokey eye - the signature Kardashian look we were going for - took the least amount of time to apply.

As for the lips, I now understand how lip liner does make a huge difference in the shape and size of your mouth. (Regardless of if you have temporary fillers or not.) Etienne contoured outside of my lips to make them appear larger and then filled in with a beige shade of lipstick to give the appearance of a plumper pout.

Etienne said all the girls wear hair extensions to help them achieve a desired look at events and red carpets, and I was mesmerized by his application. My hair is naturally a short bob, and he added 20" Bellami Hair Extensions (yes, the ones by Kylie!) to my hair. He blended them seamlessly, even though they weren't a perfect match for my hair color.

Overall, Etienne said the process takes around 2-2 1/2 hours for full hair and makeup for each sister, except Kourtney, who doesn't like to sit in the chair that long. He did want to stress that when they aren't having to work, they keep it makeup free. "These are beautiful girls to begin with, and when they aren't working, they don't wear makeup. But they're working almost every day!" said Etienne.

Check out the total transformation and watch our interview with Khloé to find out where they get those giant salads from while you're at it!

1 Connection Between Dumbledore's Army and the Marauders You Probably Missed

Throughout the Harry Potter series, the connections between Harry and his parents are made abundantly clear; Harry and his dad, James, look so similar that they're often mistaken for one another, and Harry picks up his dad's knack for Quidditch naturally. It's frequently mentioned that Harry has his mother Lily's eyes, and his fierce, untiring defense of what's right is also something he inherits from her.

But there are other similarities between the Potters' generation and their son's friend group, many of which are subtle . . . yet when articulated, the connections between the Marauders and Dumbledore's Army are striking. In a now-viral post, Tumblr user cameralinz connects several key characters in the series to older generation counterparts.

This is why I love HP related theories!

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius tells Harry: "Anyway, I suppose you're the young ones now." The theory reflects this sentiment, suggesting that each of the major characters in Harry's friend group is an opportunity to redeem the losses or failings of the previous generation.

"Anyway, I suppose you're the young ones now."

According to the theory, Neville Longbottom represents what Peter Pettigrew could have been if he'd made better choices. In this same vein, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Luna also act as foils to other members of the Marauders-era Hogwarts class.

But in a more fleshed-out reply to the theory, another Tumblr user challenges the initial character pairings . . . and we're inclined to agree.

Per this alternate reading, Harry and his friend correspond to different Marauders. In a shocking twist that would surely disturb each of them, Neville actually plays foil to his least favorite teacher, Severus Snape. Why? They each struggle to live up to their families' respective legacy before finding their place among a core group of friends and allies in young adulthood. Snape falls in with the wrong crowd, while Neville chooses a better crew of friends.

Similarly, Ron plays foil to a character that he hates: Peter Pettigrew. Overshadowed, jealous, and insecure in his social standing, Ron displays what Peter could have been if he had overcome his insecurities and remained loyal to his friends.

Ron displays what Peter could have been if he had overcome his insecurities and remained loyal to his friends.

Hermione, who found Sirius Black irresponsible albeit charming, acts as his generational foil: they each fiercely love their chosen families, and struggle with politics related to their blood status.

Luna and Remus Lupin are connected through their outsider status, and their knowledge of fringe magical communities. While each are often socially isolated and ridiculed because of who they are, Luna is different than Lupin due to her confidence and self-acceptance. (On another note: they both have names related to the moon!)

The theory goes on to connect Ginny with confident, sometimes-showoffish James Potter, and Harry to his muggle-raised, talented mother, Lily. The characters are undeniable in their similarities, and might even make you feel silly for not having noticed before.

So, do you agree with this assessment of the Marauders and their Dumbledore's Army counterparts? Let us know in the comments whether you buy into this version of J.K. Rowling's magical series!

The meme appears to have started right before the holidays and is pretty simple. Film yourself spilling something only to pan the camera to an actual message you want to send. The results? Plenty of jokes about "sending nudes" but some get really creative with what they are spilling. Check out our favorites ahead and bless 2016 for giving us another meme to get us through the rest of the year.

Hitting 1 million followers on Instagram is kind of a big deal, which is why Kaia Gerber posted a photo thanking all her followers. The Truth Behind Costco’s $5 Rotisserie Chicken

Image Source: Flickr user terren in Virginia

We can always count on Dr. Oz to expose the truth about our favorite foods. He recently investigated the hidden ingredients in rotisserie chicken, and now we finally know why it's so addictive. He teamed up with award-winning writer Mark Schatzker to figure out why Americans can't get enough of the stuff, especially Costco's $5 rotisserie chicken.

The first shocking piece of information is that rotisserie chicken is often processed, in other words, "pre-seasoned in factories," and then shipped to supermarkets, where "an employee can put it on the skewer and cook it." You may already know part of what makes store-bought rotisserie chickens so tasty is that they're on the salty side, but the skin is also flavored with MSG and sugar, among other natural flavors. Similar to potato chips, this combination helps explain why we can never have too much rotisserie chicken. Despite the seemingly scariness of it all, Dr. Oz says it may be "one of the healthiest processed foods out there." And in similar Dr. Oz. fashion, he suggests taking off the skin to keep it healthier. But if that sounds like insanity, add other sides to your plate to avoid overeating.

What I Learned When My Holiday Family Photos Went Horribly, Hysterically Wrong

It is the most dreaded day of the year for moms: family picture day. The pressure to have the perfect shot on your holiday card sends most moms I know into a major panic attack.

Our family photos were scheduled for 3:40 p.m. on a Saturday in late October. The timing was perfect to allow for naps, baby feeding, and everyone in the house to get showered and dressed. The one thing I did not plan for was the Notre Dame football game, but more on that later.

The other thing I didn't plan for: weather. Without fail, it is well above 90 degrees in October in Arizona, yet we all still believe it will be cooler. It was exactly 96 degrees when my family of five loaded into our car wearing long-sleeved shirts, suede boots, tights, and sweaters.

We met our photographer at a grassy location - with about a dozen other families who all had the same idea.

We started out with individual shots of Peyton, my 6-year-old. She is a rock star and posed perfectly. She briefly complained that her tights were itchy, but I ignored her. One down.

My 18-month-old son, Brendan, was next. He was either terrified of the photographer or completely pissed about wearing jeans and a flannel shirt as the sun beat down on him. Whatever it was, my darling boy - on a normal day, he has a smile that could melt even the grumpiest of hearts - was stone faced. Trying to break his stare, my husband, my daughter, and I jumped feverishly up and down behind the photographer. We squeaked toys, we pretended to tickle him, and my daughter even did her famous crazy dance. Brendan refused to give in.

We moved on to a group shot. I realized I was so caught up in making both kids smile, I completely forgot about my 5-month-old daughter, Cameron (being the third child, I have to admit this happens more often than not). She was sitting in the stroller, cooing at her feet - where she could easily roll away or be stolen. I scooped her in my arms and we began assembling our family.

It was then that Brendan's apathy turned to rage, and the wheels completely fell off of our family photo shoot. Brendan refused to be held or stand. He arched his body backward and kicked his feet. I noticed he was wearing only one shoe. As he was screaming "NO!" and running away, Peyton began furiously scratching her legs and whining about her itchy tights.

I looked to my husband to help - he is Brendan's favorite person. I found him off to the side with his back toward me. I asked him to help get Brendan. He didn't respond. I asked again, in a much sterner tone. "Uh, yeah, sure, but let me just see the end of this drive first." He was streaming the Notre Dame game on his phone.

After much wrangling and bribing, Brendan finally calmed down and stood - emotionless - in between my husband's legs.

"This is it," I thought. "This is going to be the photo that is not only the cover to our Christmas card, but my Facebook profile picture, and surely perfect enough to enlarge on a giant canvas above our fireplace."

My angelic baby Cameron - who was perched perfectly on my lap - chose that moment to vomit all over my hands and legs. I screamed, which had a domino effect: Cameron cried, Brendan screeched, and Peyton scratched her legs. I tried to ignore it and regroup, but my son darted off after a ball into a dirt wash. My husband pulled out his phone.

I wanted to give up, go home, and have a drink. Preferably alone.

But I couldn't give up, because someone had the bright idea to include our extended family for group pictures. As I was wiping spit-up off my pants with the corner of Cameron's $45 J.Crew dress, my mom, dad, and sister's family of four arrived.

Brendan wouldn't give up on his efforts to make these the worst Christmas photos ever. He threw himself on the ground in protest - and buried his head on the floor. I did notice that somehow, his other shoe was back on. Cameron spit up again, this time on my mom. My husband shouted triumphantly that Notre Dame had just scored a touchdown.

The photographer was laughing hysterically at all of this. "These are going to be the best photos - ones you will cherish forever," she said.

I cursed her in my head and wondered how much extra she would charge to photoshop our heads onto another family's bodies.

We left after what seemed like three hours (it had been exactly 42 minutes since we arrived), looking like a scene out of a horror film. Peyton had scratched holes in her tights. Cameron was covered in spit-up, and her bow had slipped from her head to around her eyes. Brendan resembled Pig Pen from Peanuts and had a giant snot ball dripping out of his nose. I was exhausted, smelled like vomit, and had makeup melting off of my face. My husband was also dirty from chasing after Brendan, dripping sweat, and foaming at the mouth because the game was tied.

Two weeks later, the pictures were delivered to my inbox with a message from the photographer.

"You all have SO much to be thankful for. Look at your beautiful family. I hope you can look back at this one day and laugh about how full your lives are."

And I cried, because our family is perfectly imperfect. We have temper tantrums and pulled hair and untied shoes and spit-up on our clothes. But this is who we are, and I wouldn't change one thing about it.

Except maybe the Notre Dame football schedule.

9 Beauty Products Your Grandma Swears By That Actually Work

Here's How to Trade In an Old iPhone For an Apple Store Gift Card

Got an old iPhone waiting in the wings? If you're definitely getting the new iPhone 7, turn your elderly iDevice into store credit that you can use to redeem the latest and greatest model to come.

Apple's Trade-Up Program will accept used phones and, after evaluation, you either get in-store credit to use then and there or you can send the phone via mail and receive a gift card redeemable at the Apple retail store or Apple online store. If you choose to do it at the Apple store, you can decide whether to apply the credit you receive to either the "full cost of a new iPhone or to reduce the monthly payments with your carrier." The price varies based on what iPhone model you have.

To trade in online, start by filling out the questionnaire, which will prompt you with questions about the functionality, condition, and carrier of your phone, and whether it has ever been water damaged. After completing the survey for a 16GB silver iPhone 6 in good condition, the estimate return was $200. You can also recycle your old iPhone (or any other device) for free through Apple's Renew and Recycle program.

After 20 Years, 1997's Top Fashion Trends Are Back in Style

The cycle of a trend is sort of a funny one: first something's really in, then it's really out, then it makes a triumphant return, cooler, modernized, and ready to be worn again. That's kind of what happened when it came to '90s staples. A few years ago, rocking a tracksuit out and about might have been perceived as outdated and lazy. Now? It's near impossible to find an It girl who doesn't have one in her closet.

We've recently discovered an easy hack for predicting the hottest styles, and it has to do with going back in time rather than looking forward. Read on for some 1997 styles you'll likely see everywhere in 2017. If you could just promise to stay away from that frosted white lip gloss, we'll be forever grateful.

Why 1 Fashion Blogger Is Cutting Back on Buying Clothes in 2017

All too often, a quick scroll through Instagram will leave us with the same nagging thought: we need to go shopping and we need to go now. Typically, it's inspired by something a blogger has on, from ruffled shirts to statement shoes to the newest It bag. But for 2017, Natalie Suarez, aka Natalie Off Duty, is planning on paring down rather than purchasing, and her reason might inspire you to do the same.

While the star of STATE Optical Co.'s New Originals campaign says a pair of glasses are worth the buy - "They're starting to trend as a look rather than an accessory" - her big goal is to minimize what she's got in her wardrobe.

"I want to invest in more statement pieces that I'm going to keep forever," she told POPSUGAR Fashion. "Be more eco-friendly and conscious about what I'm wearing. Rewearing things."

As for how she'll clean out all that excess stuff?

"Donating clothes that I don't wear, but [doing it] now while they're still in style. Just constantly being on top of what I have and being more minimal with everything. I like that. I like not having too many things."

Scroll on to see a few of Natalie's staples that we think she should keep. Then, check out our list of undergarments worth the investment.
