9 Things You Never Knew About Whole Foods, Straight From an Insider Employee

I spoke to Whole Foods food editor Molly Siegler, who's based at the company's headquarters in Austin, TX, and learned a variety of interesting facts that made me an even bigger fan of the store. What's the return policy? Who makes all the food in the hot bar? Can you really try something before you buy it? If you've always wanted to know this - plus more - about one of the highest-quality grocery stores, read on for all the insider secrets.

1. You can taste anything before you buy it.

Seriously - anything! "The company has a Try Before You Buy policy," Molly said, and you can use it for packaged foods (like snacks), fresh produce, and even cheese. "If there's a new apple that comes out, you can ask someone in the produce section to cut you a slice."

2. You can return anything.

The return policy "is very Nordstrom-like - bring it back; we want you to be happy." Depending on your location's policy, you'll either get your money back or get store credit - you don't even need your receipt. "It's nice if you have it, but not really [necessary]." You can even return Whole Foods beauty and body-care products, but make sure you have the receipt for those.

3. The best day to shop for sales is Wednesday.

"Wednesday is the day that our sale cycle turns over, so it actually ends up being a day where there are twice as many sales, so that's sort of a fun, magic day to come in. In addition to those in-store sales, we have mobile coupons that are part of our app. These coupons are updated regularly, and you just have the cashier scan the barcode that's exclusive to you."

4. Everything in the hot bar, salad bar, and bakery area is homemade.

"There's a new team that's been formed around culinary and hospitality: the company brought in a top chef, Tien Ho, who's been working in the restaurant world for years. He is leading the charge for elevating our prepared foods - he's going to focus a lot more on that hot bar experience and salad bar experience. To say it's made fresh and by trained chefs is definitely accurate."

5. The butchers can debone, season, and/or steam any cut of fish for you.

At no extra charge. "A lot of people do that in our offices for lunch, or it's a really easy thing to do right before you head home for dinner. And it's not just salt and pepper - there's interesting rubs and spice mixes."

6. Employees get a really good discount.

Is your local Whole Foods hiring? Every employee gets a 20 percent discount to start out with, and there's a health-focused incentive that leads to a higher discount. The company does an optional annual screening that records factors like BMI and blood pressure that employees can use as a regular health check-in, in addition to getting an increased discount.

7. The best-selling seafood item is the responsibly farmed salmon.

Look for this in the seafood section - it's the number-one selling seafood item companywide. The salmon is free of antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, and GMOs.

8. Each Whole Foods location donates leftover food to local organizations.

Ever wonder what happens to all that leftover hot food at the end of the night? The exact policy varies by location, but all food is donated. "All of our stores have partnerships with local food banks and other local organizations that they can help donate the food to at the end of the day."

9. The company really does take ingredients seriously.

"Whole Foods Market has really high quality standards, but it's not an arbitrary thing. We have a whole team that's dedicated to using science and really heavy research to figure out what can and can't be in our stores. At a minimum, we have no artificial colors, no artificial preservatives, no artificial sweeteners, and no hydrogenated fats. Every single thing in our stores meets those standards, and often poeple don't realize that."

Is It Safe to Eat Raw Oats (as in Overnight Oats)?

You fell hard for the overnight oats craze, and we don't blame you for becoming completely obsessed (we did too!) Overnight oats taste amazing because you can come up with all kinds of delicious flavor combinations from chocolate coconut almond, to banana cashew, to vanilla almond raspberry. They're easy to throw together and eat on-the-go, and they're one of the quickest breakfasts you can make that keep you feeling full all morning long. The only issue is that you may have heard that eating raw oats isn't safe because they contain phytic acid.

Why is phytic acid bad? Also known as phytate, it's found in grains, nuts, seeds, and beans and binds to essential minerals such as calcium, zinc, and iron, preventing your body from being able to absorb them. So it makes sense that if you consume too much phytic acid, you can have issues with mineral deficiencies. But don't worry! Nutritionists Stephanie Clarke, RD, and Willow Jarosh, RD, of C&J Nutrition say that even though "oats do contain phytic acid, soaking them overnight will remove some of it."

Soaking oats also helps to break down the starches, so they're easier to digest (read: less bloating) than cooked oats. If traditionally prepared oatmeal made with rolled or steel cut oats have always been off-limits because it bothers your stomach, overnight oats may not.

So go ahead and eat overnight oats every morning of the week! They're safe, easy on the tummy, and a great choice if you're watching your weight because the complex carbs and fiber keep you fuller. If you really crave a warm bowl, pop your glass jar in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds.

Thank You, Carrie Fisher, For Giving Me Princess Leia to Look Up To

In the very short time I've been in this world, I've learned that certain deaths will affect and touch you in ways you don't expect. Carrie Fisher's death is one of those.

I can't remember a time when I wasn't a Star Wars fan. For many years, I kept it a secret or didn't talk about it, because girls weren't supposed to like geeky films like that. But I know that Carrie Fisher's iconic role as Princess Leia was probably the first role I saw a woman play as a leader. As I grew up and watched the Star Wars marathons on TV and the prequels on screen, Fisher's role as Leia played an even bigger part in my life. Thanks to her character, it became cool for women to like Star Wars. It was fine to fall in love with the entire Star Wars universe. If Leia could command the Rebellion and do it in her infamous buns, then why couldn't a girl in the real world embrace that universe as well?

Leia's sass, wit, and inability to let weak men do her work for her was one of my favorite parts of the original trilogy. I can quote several of her lines (". . . half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder!") by memory and I wish we saw more of her in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Throughout my life, Fisher's role as Princess Leia paved the way for so much: girls could like geeky films, girls could see themselves as heroines, girls could be sassy and in control, and plenty more. I am lucky to now live in a world where Daisy Ridley plays Rey in the latest Star Wars movie installments, where Felicity Jones is Jyn Erso and can lead a rogue group of rebels, and where a princess can turn into a general.

Of course, Fisher was more than just the character of Princess Leia. She was an advocate for mental health, a woman who was public about her battles with addiction and bipolar disorder, someone who spoke up about sexism in Hollywood, a wondrous script doctor, and so much more. It was only recently that I started to learn more about the woman who played one of my first onscreen heroes - and I can't believe she is now gone.

Thank you, Carrie, for giving us your wit, charm, and so much more throughout your life. And most of all, thank you for giving many young girls like me the first heroine we could see ourselves in.

The Dirty Downside of Weight Loss: I Want My Butt Back!

The following post was originally featured on Fit Bottomed Girls and written by Karen, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Fitness.

Joni Mitchell pegged it when she wrote, "you don't know what you got 'til it's gone." Take for example the butt, yep, your backside.

Do you complain that it's too big, too long or too flabby? Do you curse those little ripples of cellulite and dutifully perform squats hoping to transform its shape?

Or maybe you actually like your glutes, and by all accounts you most definitely should; without them you'd be roaming around on all fours. But beyond its anatomical purpose, our butt deserves our love and respect. In fact, each and every day you should be singing its praise no matter what kind of shape you perceive it to be in. At least you have one!

I recently lost my ass, as in literally, not figuratively. A personal crisis sent my nerves into overdrive and before I knew it I'd lost ten pounds, nine of which must have been stored in my ass. It's now flat as a pancake, and let me tell you, I miss those pounds - a lot.

That badonkadonk does more than make you look good in your jeans; it actually helps to hold the damn things up! With no curves to cling to, the fabric begins a slow migration south, so most of my day is spent pulling up the crouch of my pants from hanging halfway down to my knees.

Skirts are no better. When you lack a booty even the pencil variety fails to flatter. If I could rotate my head like an owl, you'd never know if I was coming or going!

Sitting is problematic also. Without that proverbial junk in the trunk, I squirm around in my chair like a five year old, switching from cheek to cheek, trying unsuccessfully to gain a comfortable purchase.

And it wasn't just fat I lost, but hard-earned muscle, too! I could just weep.

It'll take some time, but when I get my booty back I promise to never again make discourteous remarks about it or any other perfectly functioning body part. Compared to what I've got going on now, it was a thing of beauty.

If you thought Kate Middleton had quite the fashion-forward wardrobe, perhaps you haven't been following the outfit choices of another royal: Princess Mary of Denmark. You Have to See This Little Girl's Amazing Salsa Dancing Skills

Get ready, because you're about to be embarrassed by your dancing abilities - even if you consider yourself a pro at salsa dancing, maybe even if you're Beyoncé herself reading this. This little girl killed it by doing the popular Colombian dance the salsa choke or "el choque" (because the dance requires bumping around a lot) to the song "Swagga" by Cali Flow Latino.

If you watched the Colombian soccer team during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, you'll recognize the dance from postgoal celebrations by James Rodriguez and his team. But this adorable girl performs the dance better than any soccer player could, in perfect synchrony with her partners in the background. Watch the supercute video above.

This Macro-Counting Formula For Weight Loss Is the Tool We've Been Missing

We recently learned all about the power of counting macronutrients and why it's so much more efficient (and healthy!) for your body than simply focusing on a calorie count. By focusing on carbohydrates, protein, and fat, you can better optimize your diet for your physical and personal needs, whether you're boosting your metabolism, cutting fat, or building muscle.

Many of us want to know what it takes to lose weight, right? What's the optimal diet for weight loss and fat cutting? What does that day look like? Our macro-counting expert, wellness coach Carrie McMahon, breaks it down for us and shows that slight adjustments can make huge differences in weight."[Counting macronutrients] is a concept that is fairly new to most women," said Carrie. And just like LISS workouts, macro counting has "existed in the bodybuilding world for years, but it can be applied to real, everyday life."

Related: Why You Should Be Counting Macros, Not Calories

Counting macronutrients can be tricky, but there are tools to help you stay on track (and do the math). Here's what you need to get started:

The Tools

  • A meal tracker. Figuring out all these numbers can be super tough (and mentally exhausting). To focus more on your diet and how you're feeling, Carrie suggests the My Macros+ Tracker ($3).
  • Your optimal caloric intake. Find your number with a calorie calculator online (many of them are free, including this one from FreeDiet that Carrie suggested).
    • Carrie tells us to take the total amount of calories you need to consume for maintenance, and reduce that by about 10 to 20 percent, depending on goals. That will be your caloric target for the day. Example: if your maintenance number is 2,000 calories, your target will be somewhere from 1,600 to 1,800.
    • Don't try to make huge cuts to your calories as it can have an adverse effect. "I never like to make huge jumps to cut calories." she said. She suggests slowly cutting calories, little by little, to see how your body reacts. "There's no point in cutting off a huge chunk, feeling like crap and rebounding, when in fact you may only need to cut slightly to see weight-loss results."

The Formula

Once you have your total caloric intake, it's time to break it up into macros - how many grams of fat, carbohydrates, and protein do you need each day?

Carrie's formula for weight-loss macro planning, or "cutting": 20 percent fat, 45 percent carbohydrate, 35 percent protein split. These percentages stay the same, but the calorie breakdown below will be different from yours based on your weight, height, age, and level of activity (how much you work out). Make sure you apply the 20-45-35 breakdown to your own numbers, as calculated via the FreeDiet calorie calculator.

Here's how you calculate macros: use the target number of calories, and plug it into these formulas. Let's say your target is 1,400 calories - this is how that number looks plugged into the equations.

  • (.20) x 1,400 = 280 kcal / 9 (since there are 9 calories in every gram fat) = 31 grams of fat per day
  • (.35) x 1,400 = 490 kcal / 4 (4 calories per gram of protein) = about 123 grams of protein per day
  • (.45) x 1,400 = 630 kcal / 4 (4 calories per gram of carbohydrates) = about 158 grams of carbohydrates per day

Example total macro targets for the day: 31 grams of fat, 123 grams of protein, 158 grams of carbohydrates. That's a low fat, very high protein diet.

The Meals

This is how Carrie breaks up meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner include all three macros (carbs, protein, and fat). There are two snacks built into the day: the first snack (between breakfast and lunch) is just protein and fat (no carbs), and the second snack (between lunch and dinner) is carbs and protein (no fat).

What does that looks in terms of foods? Use this guide to get a glimpse into what your days will look like (and think of this as a shopping list!). Keep in mind, you'll need to track all your foods in your app, in order to reach your target numbers. After a while, it'll start to feel like second nature and you'll have a much better idea of what your meals will look like on a day-to-day basis.

Good Carbohydrate Sources:

  • Oatmeal, oat bran
  • Sweet potato
  • Brown rice
  • All veggies
  • All fruits
  • Whole-wheat breads, wraps, pitas
  • Cereals

Good Protein Sources:

  • Chicken, lean beef, fish
  • Egg whites
  • Cottage cheese, strained Greek yogurt
  • Protein powder (Carrie says you can make protein pancakes, stir it into oatmeal or Greek yogurt!)
  • Tofu, tempeh
  • Beans (be aware that they're also high in carbs)

Good Fat Sources:

  • All nuts and nut butters
  • Avocado
  • Seeds
  • Egg yolks
  • Oils
  • Cheeses
  • Dark chocolate

What you choose to eat is up to you - there's no elimination with counting macros, it's just about being aware of your distribution and knowing if you're getting enough of the right kind of calories. It'll take some work to get the hang of it, but in Carrie's words, "the results are life changing."

The Viral Video of Some Guy Fainting on a Roller Coaster Just Got an Even Funnier Makeover

Nothing gets adrenaline pumping like a roller coaster, but the fast-paced ride at an amusement park was a little too much for Twitter user rickeyj_2 to handle. Back in July, Twitter users went crazy when he posted a video of a young man repeatedly fainting and waking back up during the course of a roller coaster ride.

As if the original clip wasn't entertaining enough, a new version has just surfaced - one that plays the old-school Microsoft Windows startup and shutdown sound effects every time the man passes out and regains consciousness. The internet has once again asserted its standing as a strange yet simultaneously glorious place . . .

Though it's not 100 percent confirmed whether this dude is actually fainting every single time, the newly edited video is still hilarious, and we can't stop replaying it. Watch the humorous video above, and catch some of the on-point reactions below.

Salma Hayek and Her Modern Family Relax by the Alps in Switzerland

Salma Hayek and her blended family are spending some time relaxing by the Alps in Switzerland, and you can say we're a little bit jealous - if by a little bit you mean a lot.

The actress and producer, who had a busy year hitting fashion shows and movie premieres arm in arm with her businessman husband François-Henri Pinault, shared a photo of a sweet moment with her stepdaughter Mathilde (from François's first marriage to Dorothée Lepèr), saying: "From #switzerland with #love." On her page, Mathilde upped Salma with a snap of the entire family, including little sister Valentina. Scroll ahead to see how they are spending their family time and admire the gorgeous view from their Winter wonderland.

My Nesting Regret: How Being Too Prepared Backfired

Nearly every pregnant woman goes through a nesting period - that month or two when all you want to do is make like a momma bird and get your home ready for the baby. It usually kicks in during the second trimester, when you're far enough along to fully accept that, yes, you'll be giving birth eventually, but not so close to the due date that you are completely zapped and unable to stay upright for more than 20 minutes at a time.

It's a small window but a well-decorated one, to be sure.

For me, because I had just moved across the country when I was six months along, my need to nest was especially intense . . . and overdue. I had a lot to do to get this apartment ready for a new tenant, and the clock was ticking.

The moment picture frames were unpacked and free from bubble wrap, I hung them right up. Whereas I normally agonized over placement - should I try a frame gallery? Should I wait until I own every piece of artwork I'll ever want in my whole life before I put this nail in the wall? - I was decisive. I didn't deliberate over color swatches, and I didn't spend countless hours on Pinterest. Instead, I took a very utilitarian approach to nesting. Before too long, we'd turned our house into a home and our spare room into a nursery.

Then came my baby shower. It was an embarrassment of riches - my family and friends were unbelievably generous. I'd only registered for essentials - changing pad covers, a nursing pillow, scent-free laundry detergent, boxes and boxes of diapers - so I wasn't surprised people went off-book with their gifts. And rightfully so. How fun to unwrap baby cowboy boots?! I mean, I'd hate to follow that. (I believe what did follow that was a Diaper Genie. Sure, it's not the one everyone wants to hang out with at a party, but the party would definitely suck without it.)

I received the most adorable, unexpected presents - handmade quilts, luxe blankets, dozens of different "I Heart Mommy" onesies, a whole set of fancy velcro swaddling blankets that came with diagrams for how to connect the different strips, cute contraptions to hold the baby's pacifier . . . oh, and pacifiers! Lots of pacifiers.

When I got the loads of goodies back home, I didn't hesitate. With the same kinetic energy I had when we first moved in, I got to work, ripping off tags, tearing open packaging. Feeling especially productive, I even threw all of the new baby clothes in the washing machine so that they'd be clean and ready to wear when the baby arrived. After all, everyone warned me I'd be too tired to even do laundry - and that I'd be up to my ears in it - so why not do the dirty work now? Even that precious peacoat, size 2T, got a good cleaning before I carefully packed it away in a bin of "big girl clothes."

It was a lot of long nights that I could have spent with Netflix, but I told myself it'd be worth it.

It's just that now I'm kicking myself. I never thought there was such a thing, but I was too organized.

I had carefully laundered about seven formal dresses for my baby girl, all in the 0- to 3-month size range, and she wore one of them. And the one she did wear, she pooped on less than five minutes after I fastened the last teeny, tiny button. (You can bet I still made us awkwardly pose for a Christmas Eve photo, the stain expertly tucked away, before changing her.)

I also washed and folded every fancy swaddling sack - one for nearly every month of her first year - only to discover that we could only successfully swaddle her with the free hospital blanket she came home in.

She spent her first few months in the same basic, zip-up sleepers that were not gifts but hand-me-downs from a cousin who swore by them. By the time I had the energy to try out the clever ribbon-tie "sleep gown" I'd long ago pressed and folded, my baby had already outgrown it.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not at all criticizing the gracious gifts that came our way. I just wish I'd thought about them a bit more practically. If I had, I may have exchanged some of the newborn-size onesies for 18-month ones, seeing as I had been given enough of the former to clothe a small army and roughly none of the latter. I would have kept the tags on products that mystified me. I assumed that once I was a parent, the instructions would magically make sense. (They didn't.) I would have also held on to gift receipts for those items that were "lifesavers" for fellow moms. I assumed that because it worked for their babies, it would naturally work for mine. (It didn't.)

I would have only kept the hand-sewn blankets made from craft-store yarn and returned the plush cashmere ones that cost more than the crib they go in (hello, college fund!) and that I'm still too nervous to use for fear they'll be ruined by spit-up.

I would have made a few more returns to Babies"R"Us and gotten a few more crucial boxes of diapers, which, I admit, aren't nearly as fun as baby Uggs.

OK, the baby Uggs can stay.

Jennifer Aniston's Dress Looks Like It's Covered in Polka Dots - Until You Zoom In

Just a few hours after stepping out in a carefree vacation dress, Jennifer Aniston hit the red carpet at the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy. She switched her florals for a dotted star print, but this Tibi design was complete with a tiny cutout at the midriff and an asymmetrical hemline that featured ruffles down the side.

Jen proved her fashion prowess in a pair of red sandals, an unexpected touch to a playful-turned-sexy look. With the addition of Jennifer Meyer gold hoops and matching bracelets, the actress looked effortless and sophisticated. Burning Question: Why Does Pineapple Irritate Your Mouth?

Yesterday I cut myself some fresh pineapple, then promptly proceeded to eat a lot of it before remembering that every time I eat a copious amount of pineapple, the roof of my mouth becomes itchy and sore. So why is this condition a common complaint among fresh pineapple aficionados?

Pineapples contain an plant protease enzyme called bromelain. Because it readily breaks down protein, bromelain is frequently used as a natural meat tenderizer. In addition, bromelain may also induce a prickly sensation in the mouth when consumed.

Although the enzyme is present in all parts of the pineapple plant, it's most concentrated in the stem, the hard piece in the middle of the fruit, which is much more fibrous and chewy but still edible. Many people believe that letting a pineapple sit overnight helps take away the irritation factor, but one surefire way to alleviate the burn is to cut out the core.

2016 Will Always Be the Year We All (Maybe) Got Pranked by Brazilian Soccer Star Neymar Jr.

If, like us, you were super intrigued earlier in the year to find out that Brazilian soccer star Neymar Jr. was launching a music career, you were totally pranked - we think.

As promised, the 24-year-old FC Barcelona forward posted a clip of the tune back in September to his Facebook page. "Muito feliz por mais essa conquista, galera. Com voces, uma palinha da minha 1ª música de trabalho: 'Yo Necesito.' Curtiram? #Neymusico," Neymar wrote beneath a video of him seated at a piano, performing his song, titled "Yo Necesito," as his friend giggles in the background - a clue that the whole #Neymusico thing might have been a joke, perhaps? Press play above to decide for yourself. We're still unsure, but if it was all a hoax, it was the best damn prank ever.

Ryan Phillippe Gets Incredibly Candid About His Battle With Depression

Ryan Phillippe is back in the spotlight thanks to the success of his USA show, Shooter, and during a recent interview with People, the 42-year-old actor got incredibly candid about his battle with depression. According to Ryan, he previously took a break from acting to focus on his kids, Ava and Deacon, whom he shares with ex-wife Reese Witherspoon, and daughter Kailani, with ex-girlfriend Alexis Knapp. "I wanted to be around as much as possible while my kids were still small," he said, adding, "Now Ava and Deacon are teenagers, so the pressure and the guilt have decreased some. I'm really enjoying acting again, which is nice!"

Ryan also revealed that he's now learned to cope with the pain, adding, "I'm a lot more at peace than I was when I was younger. I struggled much more with depression when I was in my 20s and 30s. I think the amount of reading that I've done, the work on myself, and the ways that I've found to cope are healthier than when I was younger." He also admitted that he developed a "pretty thick skin" following his 2006 split from Reese, saying, "I've faced every manner of gossip, and I don't take myself as seriously now. There is a freedom and a release that comes with maturity. I've made peace with it. We live in a time where being a private person isn't really an option anymore."

Despite recently calling off his engagement to Paulina Slagter, Ryan says he's "in a good, happy, healthy place, and there are so many more places I want to go." "When you go through dark periods in life or if you're a person who has struggled with depression as I have throughout my life, to know that that can decrease and that it doesn't have to be your defining characteristic, that you can find ways to manage and cope and feel better - that's what I'm referring to."

The Top 5 Ways to Stick to Your New Year's Resolution, According to a Trainer

We're getting closer to the new year and that means many of you are going to set some life-changing resolutions! Of course, one of the most popular promises this time of year is that in a mere few days or hours, you will be well on your way to a committed plan to lose weight, get fit, and be in your best shape ever. We get it. Maybe you want to lose some weight or simply want to set a new personal record in your next half marathon.

Regardless of your fitness level or what you're hoping for in 2017, resolutions can be difficult to live up to. Most people give up on their routines within only two weeks of making their resolution. Those who make it past the two-week mark, usually end up throwing in the towel by June, or even before.

So how will you stick to your resolution this year? Do you have a plan of action? If not, don't worry! We got you covered with these five ways to win in 2017!

1. Write Down Your Reason

Is it for your health, your family, or even to fit into those cute jeans you wore a few years ago? Whatever that reason may be, it should be your motivation to keep going.

Post a list or photo on your fridge of the reasons you are starting this new resolution, the more you see it, the more it will inspire you. According to certified personal trainer Heather Neff, posting a picture of yourself now could be all the motivation you need: "Take a picture of yourself now and make sure to go back and look at it when you need an extra push to make it to the gym."

2. Set Some Goals

Whether you're in it to lose weight, build muscle, or to ready yourself for a marathon, you need to set a goal and write it down today. Before you write down wanting to be about to outswim Michael Phelps, make sure your goal is actually attainable. You don't want to set goals like "Run 10 miles by Friday" or "Lose 40 pounds this month" because those goals are not realistic. They're big and threatening when you look at them as a whole.

A better thing to do is to break it up into smaller goals such as "Drop one pound this week" or "Hold my plank for 20 seconds longer." When you break down your goals like this, you're less likely to become overwhelmed and discouraged due to lack of results.

3. Get A Workout Buddy

Grab yourself a friend and make a commitment to each other to go work out on set days. According to Neff, "When you make a workout date with a friend, you are less likely to break it and more likely to push yourself even harder then if you were doing it alone."

Find someone positive, someone you feel comfortable with, and above all, someone you can tolerate a few times per week. Also, don't try to partner up with your fittest friend. You should find someone of a similar fitness level that wants the same results that is as committed (or more so) as you are so you aren't prone to quitting because you can't match your super-fit friend.

4. Mark Your Progress With a Picture

Pictures are amazing when it comes to motivation. Neff suggests that you take a full-length picture of yourself at every angle and, after a couple of weeks, take more pictures and compare the set. "If you've been faithful to your routine, you'll be surprised what a difference just 14 days can make and this will surely keep you going! if that doesn't get you past January, nothing will!"

5. Reward Yourself

After you've met one of your short-term goals, give yourself a reward. We're not talking about chocolate cake here! Your reward should be something that highlights your recent efforts! Lost a few pounds? Splurge on some new jeans! Feeling stronger than ever? Order a set of shiny chrome dumbbells off Amazon! Rewards are something to look forward to and something to work toward, so they can also help you keep the motivation going.

Once you get going with your routine and start seeing and feeling the positive effects, you're going to do great. Don't give up, don't give in, and try to find something that you enjoy doing and build your efforts around that.

Mark Bittman's 3-Ingredient No-Knead Bread Actually Works

If bread is the staff of life, then this cook has been wobbling on shaky legs for much of her culinary career. What is it about baking bread that's so daunting? I suppose I've rationalized my bread-baking evasion by telling myself it takes too long and my spaghetti-noodle arms can't knead well enough. But I recognize those are silly excuses, so this week I set about tackling the easiest bread recipe I could find.

About five years ago, New York Times journalist Mark Bittman introduced the baking-phobic world to Jim Lahey's no-knead bread recipe and - in typical Bittman fashion - wowed us again by reducing the 24-hour process to a mere five hours. One of us valiantly (and very successfully, I might add) took a stab at the original, but for those of us who can't plan further ahead than tonight's dinner, this may be the closest we'll come to a lovingly leavened, rustic loaf.

Bittman's recipe calls for a wet dough with plenty of yeast and leverages that high water content to steam the dough in a heavy lidded pot before browning the loaf. This process results in that crisp, crackly crust and fluffy, chewy interior that you crave in a rustic loaf, and all this without a single kneading stroke. Someday I'll pursue the weight training that will get my arms in bread-kneading shape. But until then, I thank Mr. Bittman for fostering my lazy side. For the recipe, keep reading.

Here's When All of Your Favorite Shows Come Back After the Winter Hiatus

The Winter hiatus can be a painful time. Sure, the holidays are great and all, but nearly every show on primetime stops airing new episodes. How can you enjoy Christmas dinner knowing Quantico won't be back for weeks? What's the point sledding when you're months away from The Vampire Diaries' final episodes? Who even cares about getting a New Year's Eve kiss when Pretty Little Liars is so far away? Before you get emotional, take a look at all the return dates. The majority of shows are staring back up in January, but a few are missing in action until April. Note: Once Upon a Time and The Last Man on Earth don't have return dates yet, but we'll add them as soon as they're announced!

Gwyneth Paltrow Says Chris Martin "Would Take a Bullet" For Her

Gwyneth Paltrow is kicking off the new year with a stunning magazine cover. The 44-year-old actress posed in a Valentine's Day-ready ensemble for InStyle's February issue, which hits newsstands on Jan. 6, and opens up in her interview about how Goop has changed her life, why she doesn't care about what people think of her, and how she and ex-husband Chris Martin have contributed to "the culture of divorce."

  • On making the move from actress to entrepreneur after founding Goop: "I'll think, 'Oh my god, I used to have a life of a spoiled movie star. . . What the f*ck? Why did I do this to myself?'"
  • On not caring what people think of her as she gets older: "When I turned 40, I felt like I got this free software upgrade that I wasn't expecting. It just happened. Suddenly I was like, 'Oh, this is fantastic: I don't care! I like myself, and I'm just going to live my life. I'm going to stop worrying and tearing myself down.'"
  • On her ongoing friendship with ex-husband Chris Martin: "He's at my house every single day. We have our own lives but we still have our family life. To this day, Chris would take a bullet for me, even though I'm not his wife. I honestly think Chris and I have contributed something positive to the culture of divorce."

One of our favorite ways to pass time on Instagram is to dive into a rabbit hole of henna designs. We didn't think that incredibly intricate art form could get more mesmerizing until we discovered UV henna.

These electrifying masterpieces are made of temporary, nonwaterproof body paint that glows under black light. It's not technically henna: true henna is made of the powdered brownish-red leaves of the henna plant, which leaves a stain behind. But because this modern take on the traditional style is easily removed, UV henna is a fun, festive, and low-commitment way to adorn yourself (even your face!) at music festivals, parties, or just as a unique Summer accessory. Read on to see a few of the pretty patterns.

Mom's Complicated Relationship With Her Breasts: 1 Tried to Kill Her and 1 Keeps Her Baby Alive

For all of those who think that having a mastectomy is gross or that it isn't possible to breastfeed after cancer, Kelly Knee is sharing the truth: both are miraculous.

After surviving a cancer battle and welcoming her fifth child, this empowered mom is sharing her story in the hopes that people will stop shaming others who they think look different and instead start supporting those who are overcoming struggles. "I have had two years to accept this mutilated body. I'm not saying I am bursting with joy about my new image, but it surely wins against the alternative of dying," Kelly wrote in a post on Scary Mommy.

As Kelly adjusts to life with her new baby boy, she has been deeply offended by people who think her mastectomy is disgusting. "I think that in that moment of defending myself, I realized I have nothing to be ashamed of," Kelly wrote. "I had cancer, my breast tried to kill me, and now my other breast is feeding and aiding in the life of another human being."

While some who have had breast cancer may never be able to forgive their boobs, or any other part of their body, Kelly is trying to see the good and appreciate what her breast is doing for her baby boy. Despite the pain that it has caused her, she is working to see past the scars the same way her kids do. "I have a love-hate relationship with my breasts. I hate that they tried to kill me, but I love that I am able to feed my baby," Kelly wrote. "My children don't care that I only have one breast. They don't care about the way I look, and they don't care that my chest has scars. What they do care about is the fact that I am alive, that I am able to provide food for them, and that they are deeply loved by so many."

As she overcomes any lingering self-doubt, Kelly now knows that she is capable of doing anything as a mother as long as she puts her mind to it. "I am not an outcast because I had cancer," Kelly wrote. "I am still a fully functional human with many possibilities ahead, and I plan to push myself each and every day."
