A Look Back at the Unbreakable Bond Between Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, and Billie Lourd

Hollywood mourned the loss of two of its most legendary stars this week when both Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, passed away within one day of each other. Although few will ever fill the giant holes they leave behind, it's safe to say that Carrie's incredibly talented daughter, Billie Lourd, will continue on both of their legacies. The 24-year-old actress is already set to return for Star Wars: Episode VIII and made a name for herself on the last two seasons of Scream Queens. Not only did her mother and grandmother pass on their talent to Billie, but it's also clear the three generations of actresses had the same fun-loving personalities. Billie attended the SAG Awards with them and uncle Todd Fisher in 2015, where they giggled their way up and down the red carpet and made us all a little jealous of their unbreakable mother-daughter bonds. Take a look at some of their sweetest moments at the event ahead.

Ashley Olsen Covered Up Her Bikini With the Most Unexpected Outfit

Seeing Ashley Olsen in a pair of distressed, slouchy jeans has become customary. In fact, she and her sister Mary-Kate used to pair them with halter tops on the red carpet. Since they had somehow amped them up for movie premieres, it should come as no surprise that Ashley made her denim work on vacation. She joined her boyfriend Richard Sachs at the beach in St. Barts, covering up a bikini top with a standard caftan and a long necklace.

But it was Ashley's luxe crocodile satchel and shredded blues that suggested she was ready to take things off the sand and hit the town. We never thought to pack our ripped denim for an island getaway before, but we're about to turn over a new leaf thanks to Ashley's style move. Scroll for another look, then shop similar cover-up combinations.

We Promise These 19 Runway Trends Are Actually Doable

It may not be Spring just yet, but the runway trends we've seen are already inspiring our outfits. Of course, some looks that skirt along the catwalk don't seem easy to pull off. "I wouldn't be able to move in that," we thought, as we held up our phones and snapped away at a show.

Even still, something about a new styling trick - a coat pulled all the way off the shoulders or a completely undone blouse - feels exciting enough to try. Below, we've gathered our favorite new styles that are actually easy to master IRL, we pinky promise. Scroll for a bunch of tips you'll want to remember as you embrace the new year.

People Die on the Transplant List Every Day, but This Lucky Baby Got a Liver After 40 Minutes

People of all ages spend anywhere from months to years on the organ transplant list, many even dying while they wait, but 5-month-old Daniel McCabe's wait was an unprecedented 40 minutes.

The infant was born with discolored, yellowing skin and has since faced a number of challenges after being diagnosed with biliary atresia, "in which bile from the liver never makes it to the gallbladder, damaging liver cells and eventually killing the organ." His parents braced themselves to face the typical wait time on the transplant list - about three months - by doing everything in their power to keep their son alive until, hopefully, a liver became available.

When 40 minutes after getting put on the transplant list, doctors at Lurie Children's Hospital approached Daniel's mother, Melody, she was expecting really bad news. As it turns out, she was about to receive the best news possible - there was a liver available for Daniel.

"Many times you're waiting for months or years," said Dr. Riccardo Superina, Daniel's transplant surgeon. "There are people who die every day because there's not an organ available." Although Daniel is Dr. Superina's smallest patient to date - he says Daniel is "about the size of a loaf of bread" - his life was saved after an eight-hour operation in which an adult liver was transplanted into his tiny body.

Doctors say that Daniel is getting healthier every day and that he will hopefully be able to go home to Wisconsin by March. Although his parents are devastated for the other family who lost their loved one, they're beyond thrilled that their son is getting a second chance at life. "I can only chalk it up to some kind of divine intervention," said Daniel's father, Joseph. "What a gift."

Debbie Reynolds's Famous Costars Pay Tribute to Her After Her Heartbreaking Death

The world lost another Hollywood legend on Dec. 28. Just one day after the tragic death of Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, her mother, Debbie Reynolds, died at the age of 84 after suffering a stroke. Since the news broke, some of Reynolds's famous costars have been posting tributes to the icon on social media, sharing their fondest memories of what it was like to act alongside her. Debra Messing, who played her daughter in Will & Grace, posted a touching tribute on Instagram, while Halloweentown's Kimberly J. Brown took to Facebook to remember her onscreen grandmother.

Debbie Reynolds's Son Reveals His Mother's Last Words: "I Want to Be With Carrie"

Debbie Reynolds's son, Todd Fisher, encountered unimaginable tragedy this week when he suffered not only the shocking loss of sister Carrie Fisher on Dec. 27 but also of his mother the very next day. The legendary Singin' in the Rain star passed away after suffering a stroke, and Todd was by her side the entire time. "She went to be with Carrie. In fact, those were the last words that she spoke this morning," he told E! News shortly after her death. "More specifically, she said that she really, she was under a lot of stress." Part of what contributed to the 84-year-old's mindset was the fact she never got to see Carrie before the Star Wars actress passed, since Carrie experienced her heart attack while aboard a flight traveling from London to LA and reportedly never regained consciousness. "She held it together beautifully, obviously, for the last couple of days but she was under a lot of emotion and stress from the loss [of Carrie] and it's pretty much what triggered this event."

Debbie had her stroke while staying at Todd's Beverly Hills home on Wednesday and was then transported to Cedars-Sinai hospital in LA. Both Carrie and Debbie's untimely deaths have inspired a number of heartbreaking tributes from friends, family, and colleagues. One of the few consolations is knowing that their one-of-a-kind mother-daughter bond was unbreakable until the very end.

Once You Look at What Janelle Monae Did to Her Hair, You Can't Unsee It

Janelle Monáe just rocked an eye-conic look. The musician is known to have fun with her hair, but she took it to the next level by rocking googly eyes (like from the '90s) in double buns. It perfectly complemented her polka-dotted Kate Spade coat. (This is not the first time she wore space buns, BTW.)

Stylist Nikki Nelms created this kitschy look, which Janelle wore on NBC shows, including Today and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Dec. 20.

"I see you all these eyes around my head," Janelle said while hanging out with Nikki in an Instagram video. "I see you (points)."

She also captioned a photo, "Even when I'm sleeping, I keep 20 eyes open."

If you want to DIY this style at home, try gluing googly eyes to bobby pins and sticking them into your topknot, double buns, etc.

We also can't ignore the rest of Janelle's style: a winged-out cat eye, creamy hot-pink lip, and black-and-white nail art.

You Only Need to See the Top of Michelle Obama's Dress to Know It's a Holiday Miracle

Michelle and Barack Obama never forget to address the nation on Christmas. This time, they looked back at their very first holiday video and the past eight years they spent serving our country. There was a lot to reminisce about, and a pertinent feeling of comfort and familiarity. Even so, Michelle sat by Barack's side glowing in a brand new dress.

The custom Gucci design was complete with ruffles and shimmering floral appliqué at the neckline. Michelle pulled her hair back and selected simple diamond studs in order to let the details shine. All we could think as we watched her fireside chat was how well she wears Alessandro Michele's signature pieces.

While Michelle might be stepping down as FLOTUS, she certainly won't be backing away from the public eye, so she'll need to keep some glamour looks on hand. One glimpse at the film below, and there's no denying that some of them will be Gucci. Read on for all the proof you need, then shop inspired festive dresses.

9 Eye Makeup Looks That Are Fabulous, Not Frosty

Full disclosure: in middle school, I wore nothing but white eye shadow for a year straight. As an incredibly unsavvy beauty lover, my 13-year-old self somehow confused smearing iridescent white powder over my eyelids for a trendy makeup technique. Alas, I was mistaken. Shout-out to the friend who (somewhat) kindly informed me that I looked ridiculous and told me to buy a real eye shadow palette.

So you can imagine my apprehension at one of the top Winter trends: icy eye makeup. This style emulates Queen Elsa and her beauty by layering blue, gray, and yes, white pigments. It can be intimidating to try a look that could appear dated so easily, but thankfully, we're not on our own.

To make sure that this look turns out sophisticated, clean, and festive, we're turning to the pros: beauty vloggers on YouTube. Whether you're looking for a bright and bold or soft and shimmery style, these tutorials make it easy to customize your Winter look.

22 Traits That Hopefully End With the Terrible Twos

Congratulations to me! My kid is about to be out of the terrible twos. It's time to say goodbye to tantrums, diapers, and incoherent arguments, right? I know, I know. Keep dreaming, Mama. But even as a veteran mom who's lived through one round of the terrible twos and the even-worse threenager year with my daughter, I can't help but hope my son's upcoming third birthday will also mean the end of some of the least fun parts of parenting.

In a perfect world, on the morning he officially turns 3, we would be done with all 22 of these terrible things.

  1. Diapers. I can think of one thing, and one thing only, that's good about having a kid in diapers: it means I don't have a kid I constantly have to ask "do you have to go potty?" Other than that, the ick factor, the expense, the rashes . . . it's all sh*tty.
  2. Gleefully running into danger. Oncoming traffic, busy sidewalks, playground equipment designed for kids more than twice his age - my 2-year-old is sprinting towards it all, with me anxiously trying to catch him.
  3. Screaming. I get it, you have a limited vocabulary and are frustrated by it, but seriously, the screaming needs to stop.
  4. Irrational independence. No, you actually can't cook that corn dog, put on your lace-up shoes, or take a bath all by yourself, but thanks for making my life a little harder by insisting you can.
  5. Biting. Maybe you've forgotten, but you have all your teeth now, and they're designed for eating, not for gnawing on your sister's arm.
  6. Willful disobedience. My kid literally has a dance with hand gestures that he does when he decides he doesn't want to do what I'm asking of him. I see it a lot.
  7. Hitting, kicking, and throwing things. Use your words, man. Violence is never the answer.
  8. Baby talk translation. Three people in the world (me, his dad, and his sister) can understand everything my son says right now, and translating for the rest of the world is getting tiresome.
  9. Day-night confusion. Three-hour nap, then up until midnight? Why haven't we figured this one out yet?
  10. Illogical meltdowns. Things my 2-year-old has recently cried about: that we don't have a dog and can't get one today, that we don't have four dogs, that both of his grandmas weren't there when he woke up from his nap, that I put his meatballs on a plate. Enough said.
  11. Wrestle dressing. Dude, I look forward to the day you can dress yourself, too. Today is not that day, so please don't make this harder than it needs to be.
  12. Middle of the night wake-ups for no reason. If you're not wet, sick, or scared of a bad dream, I see no reason I should see you at 3 a.m.
  13. Rocking to sleep. I'm sure I only have myself (and my husband) to blame, but my kid insists on hours-long rocking sessions in our glider before he'll go to sleep at night. He's 40 pounds. I think it's time for a big-boy bed.
  14. Follow the leader. I love your big sister, too, buddy, but she can be a real piece of work. Just because she's crying and screaming does not mean you have to follow suit every single time.
  15. Haircut hatred. I promise, haircuts don't actually hurt. We've done this enough times for you to know that. Cool it on the dramatics.
  16. Fingernail-clipping fights. I let it go (again) until you literally sliced your face with one of your claws - I mean, nails - so please let me give them a trim without acting like I'm trying to kill you.
  17. Nap battles. You need a nap. You've taken one every day of your short life, so why, oh why, do we have to go through the "no nap" cry fest so often?
  18. "One more" everything. One more hot dog. One more book before bed. One more toy for the car ride. One more minute on your iPad. It's never just one more, kid. I've got you figured out.
  19. Picky eating. My son's basic food groups include encased meats, carbs, sugary treats, and the occasional piece of the three kinds of fruit he'll actually eat. This does not seem like a balanced diet.
  20. Crazy climbing. Much like his lack of a basic understanding about running into traffic, my kid also doesn't seem to get that pulling over a bar stool to climb into the refrigerator is not a great idea.
  21. Big-box store hide and seek. Just so we're clear, I am not having fun finding you two aisles over at the grocery store, in the middle of a clothing rack at Target, or behind a display of board games at Barnes and Noble.
  22. Moodiness. I appreciate that you can turn that frown upside down in the blink of an eye. I just wish the opposite wasn't equally true.

7 Ways You Can Help a Dog in Need

Want to help a dog in need but don't know how much of a commitment you can make? Here are seven ways - ranging from the biggest commitment to the simplest - that you can make a difference to a homeless dog.

1. Adopt, Don't Shop

One of the most direct ways to help a dog in need is to adopt your next family pet from a rescue group or shelter. According to the Humane Society of the United States, unless a pet store is sourcing puppies from local shelters, most stores sell puppies that come from puppy mills, where dogs are often kept in inhumane conditions. Buying from stores or internet sites supports these mills.

If you're new to having a dog, be sure to research breed characteristics or ask the shelter staff about the dog's personality so you can find a good fit for your lifestyle. If there's a specific breed you want, try typing the breed name and "rescue" into a search and see if there's a rescue group near you or one willing to transport. Or type a breed into Petfinder.com and see what happens. That's how we ended up with our girl, Rita. I typed in "beagle" . . . and her little beagle-shepherd mix face popped up. We couldn't resist her!

And, if you already have an adopted pet, be sure to tell everyone how rewarding rescuing is.

2. Consider Fostering

Fostering a pup in your home can be a huge help for the shelter since it frees up space to make room for another adoptable dog. It also helps the shelter learn what the dog's personality is like so they can eventually find the perfect forever home. At the shelter where I volunteer, they often need people to foster puppies who are too young to be adopted out. Think of it . . . you could get a puppy fix without the hassle of going through the teething phase!

3. Give Your Time

If you have the time in your schedule, consider volunteering once a week. I do this myself and some days I'm busy or just plain cranky and I don't feel like going – but I'm always glad once I go. It's very rewarding to spend time giving adoptable dogs the love and exercise they need.

4. Give Your Special Skills

If you don't have time to volunteer regularly, consider volunteering your special skills on an as-needed basis. For example, if you're a great photographer, offer to stop by and take photos of dogs who've been up for adoption for a long time. Sometimes a great photo can be a huge boost in getting a dog noticed. Or look into special events your nearby shelter holds – maybe you can volunteer your public relations skills for their annual gala, or help with organizing a 5K walk. Helping out doesn't always have to require a huge, on-going time commitment.

5. Give Money

Writing a check – what's easier than that? Especially consider donating to local shelters. (Note that "humane society" and "SPCA" are generic terms, so local shelters using those terms are not necessarily part of the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. Don't expect that donating money to the larger national organizations will trickle down to help the dogs in your 'hood.) One thing I enjoy is donating to the shelter where we got Rita, and then interacting with them on their Facebook page. It's a lot of fun to see the pictures and videos they post and feel like you're making a difference in some specific dogs' lives.

However, I know there are lots of demands on your checkbook, so . . .

6. Give Your Old Stuff!

If time and money are both tight, you can still help a dog in need by cleaning out your linen closet. Most shelters are in constant need of towels and bedding for the animals, so dig out all those old blankets, sheets, towels and throw rugs. That towel with the bleach stain that's too funky even to donate to Goodwill is fine for pups and kitties to sleep on! Often shelters need other items you may not have thought of such as toys, paper towels, hand sanitizer, or plastic kiddie pools for the dogs to play in. Or you can check if your local shelter would like to have your gently used technology when you upgrade – printers, flash drives, cameras, etcetera are often a very welcome donation.

There's one last easy-peasy way to help:

7. There's an App For That!

Did you know there are apps for your smart phone that can help animals in need? For example, Cruelty Cutter from The Beagle Freedom Project lets you scan a barcode on an item you want to purchase and see if it was tested on animals. There are also free apps that let you help raise money for shelters just by getting out and walking - check out the ResQwalk or Walk for a Dog apps.

There you have it - a "lucky seven" of ways to help a dog in need. And I'm sure that any dog you help will feel lucky indeed.

Going a Day Without My Phone Changed Everything

Do you want to get more sleep? Do you wish you had extra time in your day? Interested in generally enjoying the world around you? Then turn off your smartphone for a day. That's what I did this week, and let me tell you, giving up your security blanket - I mean iPhone - is liberating.

At 7:15 a.m. my alarm went off. Usually this would be my cue to grab my phone and start my morning Internet routine: Check work email. Reply to urgent work emails. Check personal email. Reply to urgent personal emails. Read morning news digests sent to my inbox. Check Facebook. Check Instagram. Check email one more time. Force. Myself. To. Get. Out. Of. Bed. Sound familiar?

Thanks to ditching my phone, my morning felt way longer and more relaxed.

Instead, it went something like this: Get out of bed. Take a shower. Get dressed. Make coffee. Open laptop. Read email, social media, and news while leisurely enjoying my coffee. Head to the office. Get there 20 minutes earlier, since I got out of bed 20 minutes earlier. Thanks to ditching my phone, my morning felt way longer and more relaxed.

But let's get back to that journey to work. My phone usually plays a big part in it. I call my mom on my 15-minute walk to the subway or listen to podcasts or music. This day I was faced with a solitary walk, free of distractions. And I liked it! I let my mind wander. I noticed the architectural details on the homes I passed. I discovered that on a clear day, you can see the very tip of the Golden Gate Bridge peeking out above the homes on my hilly street. My gut reaction: quick, where's my phone so I can snap a pic for Instagram? But instead, I had to enjoy it all by myself. The walk through my San Francisco neighborhood felt like my little secret.

Once on the subway train, the five-stop journey seemed surprisingly faster, since I wasn't frustrated with a podcast that wouldn't load or a playlist that stopped streaming when I lost service. I also wasn't reloading my email like an addict every time we pulled into a station.

The workday was pretty uneventful without a phone. I'm glued to my computer anyway and popped over to the deli across the street for a late lunch. It didn't give me much time to wait for my food without anything to distract me. I did have a semi-important call with someone in NY, but no phone. So, I used the Google Voice plugin on Gmail to make the call for free. And the Messages Mac app kept me in text-message contact with all my fellow Apple users. And of course I had access to Facebook and Instagram on my browser.

Getting through the day wasn't as hard as I expected, but come 6 p.m., I felt nervous about the commute home. I wore heels that day - but couldn't even think about calling an impulse Uber! Instead of popping in my earbuds in the elevator and firing up the latest Fresh Air on the NPR app, I was faced with a 40-minute commute, free of any personal entertainment. Instead, I grabbed the New Yorker that had been chilling on my desk for a month. Keep in mind: the text-heavy New Yorker and eye-candy Instagram sit on exact opposite sides of the attention-span spectrum.

I've taken the same subway route for five years now, but it seemed different. I felt like an alien visiting from another planet, observing a human society glued to their screens. Now unplugged, I noticed how bizarre it is to see grown adults walking around oblivious to the world around them, and dangerously close to the platform's edge no less. Bump into them, and they seemed jostled out of a social media- or music-streaming-induced dream. I thought, "Who needs Terry Gross when you have a fascinating anthropological experiment happening before your eyes?"

I felt like an alien visiting from another planet, observing a human society glued to their screens.

Now home and filled with smug self-congratulation about a few hours without my iPhone, I opted for a more time-honored screen-time tradition: watching TV. But even vegging out had changed. After dinner, which is always phone-free in our house thankfully, we plopped on the couch for some House of Cards bingeing. Instead of distracting myself with my phone, I gave the TV my full attention . . . until I didn't. Without Facebook and group texts to keep me awake, I found myself passed out at 9:30 p.m. Off I went to bed, where I didn't log some typical end-of-day email checking. I often go to sleep at 11:30 p.m., but that night I was tucked in at 10 and fast asleep until my alarm woke me up. And when it did, I decided to skip my usual still-in-bed phone time and go straight to the shower.

This Bride Wore a Purple, Prince-Inspired Veil and Thrifted Her Party Dress

When Frank151 editor Lily Waronker married Jonny Gordon at the Alexandria Ballrooms in LA, they got groovy about it. The couple love Prince and the movie Boogie Nights, so they sent out purple invitations and set up their reception like a disco. Of course, the dress code reflected the theme - at least for the bride, who wore a purple lace veil as an homage to the iconic singer and didn't back away from sparkle when it came to her wardrobe.

While Lily's initial gown - a Jonathan Cohen creation brought to life by the designer's partner, Sarah Leff - was made of velvet and stitched with shimmering embroidery, it was her thrifted party dress that we admired most. Lily went shopping in her hometown of LA at Paper Bag Princess, where she found a sequined halter maxi that encouraged guests to dance the night away. Scroll to see all her festive bridal looks that prove outfitting a theme can be pretty darn classy.

5 DIY Skin Care Recipes That Will Make You Look So Matcha Better

Matcha may be a buzzy food ingredient as of late, but the green tea powder is also a superstar when it comes to skin care. For starters, it contains chlorophyll, which is both an antioxidant and detoxifier. That means it doubles down by ridding the skin of impurities while also warding off free radicals that can damage cells.

"It is antiaging due to the antioxidants, is brightening, and is good for circulation and oxygenation of the skin cells," explains celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas. She says matcha is also recommended for those with oily or acne-prone skin since it fights infection by killing bacteria.

Vargas and fellow celebrity esthetician Christine Chin shared their favorite DIY skin care recipes that utilize matcha as the star ingredient. (And we tested them so you can see exactly how they're made!)

Just like Beatrice, we're a fan of personalized items, and this may be the perfect last-minute gift for the friend who's always going out. Go ahead and silently thank the princess for giving us the idea and inspiring a few similar shopping picks below.

Cranberry Is the Seasonal Skin Care Ingredient You Never Knew You Needed

Cranberries do more than just make the delicious sauce to go with your holiday turkey dish. The seasonal berry is actually a fantastic ingredient when it comes to skin care.

"Cranberries contain a plethora of antioxidants, which help to prevent aging," explained Cassandra Bankson, beauty guru and creator of the Skin Science series.

For example, it's high in two types of vitamin E (tocotrienols and tocopherols) that are antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental damage to reduce and prevent wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, and dull skin.

I Was an Accident - but That Doesn't Mean I Wasn't Wanted

When a neighbor walked into my childhood home a few years back, he made a comment that stuck with me.

"My gosh, Lauren, from looking around at all of the framed photos, if I didn't live next to you throughout your entire life and just walked in, I would've never known that you existed."

It's true: being the youngest of four kids means that I got slighted in the picture department. It wasn't that I was an afterthought - you just don't have time for thoughts when you have four little ones under the age of 10 running around without a nanny or babysitter to lend a hand.

As I got older, it still stung to see all of the different albums dedicated to my older siblings, especially when my album - in which a page and a half was devoted to me before it became crammed with report cards and photos of the others - paled in comparison.

Once, during a heated childhood fight, one of my siblings tried to make me feel even worse about being the youngest by spewing a secret . . . that I was an accident and therefore unwanted. However, it ended up having the opposite effect. The instant I learned I was unplanned was actually the most empowering, hopeful moment of my life.

For as long as I can remember, I had known my mom wasn't able to get pregnant easily. After more than six years of struggling with infertility, she was lucky to have one healthy child, let alone four. I heard about the miscarriages she had both before and after her firstborn, and I was familiar with the surgeries, fertility treatments, and drugs that it took in order for her to have my siblings. I also knew that my aunt endured a similar struggle and that my three cousins are adopted.

I knew all of this and I worried about my own fertility - before I had even gotten my first period.

Like my mom, my desire to be a mother is something I've felt for as long as I can remember and never questioned. It's not something that I ever debated. While some consider motherhood a choice, I consider it an esteemed aspiration.

So when I discovered the years it took for my parents to have kids, I wondered if the same hardship would be in my future. I always knew that adoption could be an option. Yet, I let myself worry about the struggles of heading down that path before I even wondered what I wanted to be when I grew up.

When my sister shot out the news that I was an accident, the thought had never even crossed my mind. Her intent was most likely revenge for playing with her American Girl doll without permission. But to both of our surprise, the revelation didn't leave me once again loathing my youngest-sibling status. In fact, for the first time, it didn't faze me at all.

I looked over at my mom - not startled but for confirmation - and after she nodded, I quickly responded, "Not a mistake but the best surprise they ever had!"

I couldn't help but appreciate the news. They had me without planning on it. They had me without expensive medical intervention and years of pain. After everything, they conceived naturally.

On a long car ride home from college, I finally asked my mom about the circumstances surrounding my unexpected arrival, and she frankly explained, "We had no way of knowing we could get pregnant on our own - after 15 years of marriage we hadn't, so why in the world would we use protection?!" And while I didn't appreciate the TMI moment while I was operating a moving vehicle, I did value her honesty. She opened up that she always dreamed of having five little girls, and when she decided to take that unexpected pregnancy test, she was thrilled but also beyond nervous.

She confessed that my dad had pictured a smaller family than my mom's dream brood and wanted three kids - exactly what they already had. She felt that I would be the perfect compromise between five, but she also knew that this "happy accident" wouldn't be one that he'd be willing to risk again. Being a retired nurse, my mother understood that getting pregnant at 38 years old came with major risks, and her heart plummeted to her swollen gut when they couldn't hear my own tiny heartbeat during the first sonogram.

The only person more excited than my mom on the day of my scheduled C-section was my father - and maybe that same sister who broke the news years later but at the time was beyond thrilled to finally be getting a baby sister to dress up.

Yes, I was a complete accident. I joined the family unit later in life, when money was tighter and experiences were already had. My baby photos never made it to the wall in my parent's bedroom because the gold frames that encased each of my sibling's newborn faces weren't still sold by the time I came around.

But none of that mattered compared to the powerful knowledge that I had a chance to become a mother. I might have the opportunity to get pregnant - and take as many photos as I could ever want of my own children.

The news of my parents' surprising turn of luck - which could've left other children feeling insecure and unwanted - has always left me filled with hope.

Now that the year is almost over, it's time for a look back at some of this award season's highlights.

But it wouldn't be award season without some killer red carpet fashion and showstopping performances (Pitbull, we're looking at you!), too. Keep scrolling to relive all the best moments you might have missed earlier in the year.

When was the last time you could throw on a hoodie and feel like the coolest chick on the block? With the rise of Vetements, that's more than possible. In fact, we saw the hit street label all over Fashion Week, but it really made its mark last season, when designer Demna Gvasalia rolled out a line of bold graphics and sporty separates, following up with his Balenciaga debut for Fall '16. Now, most women are opting for the red sweatshirt that reads "May the bridges I burn light the way," but others stroll around in the brand's slouchy track pants.

The fashion industry's embracing that relaxed look more than ever, and thankfully, all your favorite retailers are following suit. We rounded up 15 sweatshirts that will help you achieve Vetements flair, all for a small price. Whether you invest in the hottest commodity or choose a jumper splashed with a different slogan, this is undoubtedly the most comfortable trend you'll ever try on for size.

What I Learned Watching My Mom Care For Her Own Mother

I was 10 years old when my grandfather passed away and my grandmother moved in. Before the tragedy of my grandfather's death, and the gift of living in the same house as my grandmother, she had been battling cancer. During that time, my mom split her days between raising her four children and nursing her own parent back to health.

For the next 13 years, my grandmother not only lived with us but was also actively involved in every aspect of our lives. She was a second mother, but I learned just as much from my grandmother's anecdotes and important life lessons as I did watching my mom dedicate her days to caring for my grandma's well-being - both physically and emotionally. My mom had to make difficult choices daily, feeling pulled in both directions as she tried to care for both her children and her own parent. These are the 11 major lessons I learned from it.

  1. You're never just a parent or just a child: As you progress from one stage of life to the next, you don't leave everything behind. Even as my mom became a mom herself, she was always a daughter first and wouldn't let her new role completely overshadow the fact that she was also someone's daughter.
  2. It doesn't matter if you're a stay-at-home mom or a working mom, there are always compromises: My mom had a full-time job as a nurse before stepping away from her career when she had kids. She had just gone back to work for the first time in 15 years as her youngest entered elementary school when my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, followed a few years later by my grandfather's sudden death. From that point on, my grandmother moved in and my mom permanently walked away from her career in order to care for all of us. Even though she wasn't "working," she still constantly had to choose between her kids and her mom, make sacrifices over what events to miss in order to make doctor's appointments, and was always dealing with guilt about not being able to do it all.
  3. There's always something to be learned from your mom - at every stage of life: Everyone found my mom and grandmother hysterical because their natural form of communication was bickering. The older they got, the more similar they became until some strangers even mistook them for twins (much to my mom's horror). But through this friendship in their adult years, my mom always took my grandmother's thoughts and perspective into account. Despite being a grown women who was successfully raising four kids in her own right, she was still humble enough to recognize good advice, even when she didn't ask for it, and appreciate the value of a grandmother's experiences.

  4. Sometimes being a good child is when you don't put yours first: Some criticized my mom for putting her parent before herself or her family and constantly told her it was a choice they would never make. My mom did make an effort to prioritize my grandmother in the last years of her life and worked daily to make sure that she was supported, valued, and loved. Even if it meant that that we didn't have her undivided attention at all times of day, we gained something so much more: a strong moral code that doesn't turn your back on family.

  5. You go wherever you are needed most: Whether she was dealing with four kids or her mom, my mom's go-to motto was that she always goes where she is needed most. Like making a triage assessment, she learned early on that she can't be there for every person at the exact same time so she had to constantly reprioritize who needed her most at any given moment.

  6. A relationship with grandparents is one of the best things you can ever give your child: I didn't grow up with just one mother, I was raised with two. Although I always used to joke when my grandma was giving me a hard time that I wished I had the adoring grandparent who made me cookies and told me how perfect I was, I'm beyond grateful for all of her advice. I had a grandma who was completely involved in every aspect - including the bad - and wasn't afraid to tell me when I was wrong in order to help shape me into the person I've become.
  7. You might not always agree with someone but you always show respect: The generation that my grandma raised kids in was drastically different than the one my mom was raising us in. Many times my grandma didn't agree with or even understand the decisions my mom was making, but we were still taught to listen and show respect for her dissenting opinion and value her perspective.
  8. The time you spend with someone is more valuable than any gift or bouquet of flowers: From doctors' appointments and hospital stays to just helping pass the time playing cards, my mom was there for my grandma. While other loved ones sent a card on Mother's Day or stopped by with the occasional box of candy, I was able to see firsthand that time is way more precious than what you spend on someone.

  9. It isn't about what you cook, it's about who is around the table eating it: When she was raising kids, my grandmother would spend hours cooking dinner before setting the table for a nightly family meal. When she moved in, my mom carried on this tradition - only she despised cooking. But she still worked to ensure that we always had a family dinner every night, even if it came from Costco's prepared food section.
  10. Find a spouse who not only supports you but also supports your extended family: When my grandmother moved in, it didn't just affect my mom or us kids, but it also changed my dad's day-to-day life. He put her first, just like my mom did.

  11. The world doesn't revolve around you - and that's a good thing: My mom and my grandmother's relationship showed us kids that life doesn't center around the children in the house. It was just as important to help when was needed as kids and do things for others - including spending a Saturday night watching black-and-white movies instead of going out with friends in order to cheer someone up who we loved the most in this world.

If You Want to Lose Weight, Here's Why You Should Try Matcha

Ready to take your morning caffeine habit to the next level? It may be time to replace your loose leaves or cup of coffee with matcha. A powdered form of steamed and dried green tea leaves that has been used in Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries, matcha tastes like a grassier, brighter version of the regular stuff. Think of it as the "healthy espresso of green tea," say David Mandelbaum and Jessica Lloyd, owners of matcha purveyor Panatea. So just how healthy is the green powder? A study found that one serving of matcha has 137 times more disease-fighting polyphenols, called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), than a brewed mug of conventional China Green Tips - the equivalent of up to 10 cups of regular green tea! With such an antioxidant punch, it's no wonder that matcha just may be the new superfood. Read on for why it could just be a miracle in a mug.

Weight-loss concentrate: EGCG has been shown in some lab studies to boost metabolism, and other research has shown that EGCG may help stop the growth of new fat cells. While more studies are still needed to confirm results in humans, add to this the fact that drinking green tea instead of sugary drinks can help you save calories, and opting for a healthy matcha-based drink (like this lower-calorie version of Starbucks's green tea latte) may just be a wise weight-loss decision.

Disease-fighter: The concentrated levels of antioxidants in matcha are hard to beat, especially considering catechins in green tea have been shown to have cancer-preventing as well as immunity-boosting effects, including helping prevent high-risk health workers from catching the flu.

Daily detox: Matcha may just help keep your body functioning in tip-top shape; a lab study in rats with type 2 diabetes found that a daily dose of matcha provided a protective effect on their liver and kidney systems. Other research has found that green tea drinkers had a 33 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes by helping reduce blood glucose levels - the more green tea they drank, the lower the risk.

Jitter-free energy: A serving of matcha has less caffeine than an espresso, but its nutrient makeup just may give you more energy. Because the tea leaves used to make matcha are protected from sunlight before being harvested and steamed, the leaves retain much of their natural chlorophyll (which is why matcha is so green), a substance that has been shown to help boost energy. Plus, green tea is an excellent source of the mind-calming amino acid L-theanine, which means you may just feel more awake and alert without the late-afternoon caffeine crash.

When buying matcha, be sure and check each product so you know you're buying high-quality tea with the most health benefits. "The more vibrantly green the matcha is, the higher the chlorophyll and amino acid content," David and Jessica advise. Also, check labels and watch out for additives and sugars, which some matcha products contain. For the perfect cup, David and Jessica recommend heating water until near boiling (180°F) and whisking in matcha powder in a "M" or "W" motion.

A Body-Positive Resolution (And 12 Ways to Implement It This Year)

Make your resolution this year to love your body more, and make your 2017 mantra, "I love my body." Instead of setting a weight-loss goal or some kind of resolution that you'll forget about two weeks into January, why not celebrate yourself all year round? We've got 12 tips for you to show yourself some TLC and live a happier, healthier life. You can challenge yourself to one a month, or do all of these things throughout the year.

  1. Meditate once a week (or more!) and repeat your mantra for the year.
  2. Buy yourself a new outfit that makes you feel amazing.
  3. Find a new healthy recipe you love, and master it - you'll be an expert at cooking something that makes you feel good.
  4. Give yourself a daily compliment, no matter how small.
  5. Track your water intake every day for a month, and make notes about how you feel when you're more hydrated. Do you have more energy? Is your mood improved?
  6. Pick one of your favorite parts of your body and find a way to highlight it. Are you proud of your booty? Grab yourself a gift for your butt. Love your back muscles? Get yourself a backless dress that showcases your hard work.
  7. Upload a selfie or a picture of yourself to Instagram - work that confidence!
  8. Each time you find yourself comparing yourself to others, remind yourself to celebrate their beauty and your own.
  9. Plan a self-care day (or two . . . or three). Get a massage, do a face mask or get a facial, and go to a yoga class. Celebrate your body and your health!
  10. Make this year the year you stop critiquing and judging others - you'll find that you'll be kinder to yourself, too!
  11. Each time you feel like you have a setback, acknowledge your bad feelings, let it go, and do your best to move on with your day. Holding on to negativity can make you feel toxic - not good for your brain or your body! Don't feel bad about having bad feelings (it's normal), but make this year about staying positive.
  12. Work out because you LOVE your body, not because you hate it. This year, find a workout you love that makes you feel good - not one you you want to do because you're trying to lose weight or change your appearance. Even if it's just walking more, that added movement will increase your feelings of happiness and endorphin levels, and you'll glow from the inside out.
