If You're Looking to Be Healthier in 2017, Start With These 10 Tips Now

"I want to eat healthier" is a common goal we all share, so here are 10 changes you can make to your diet to help you feel more energetic and less bloated and to support your immune system and your weight goals. Don't feel like you need to make every one of these changes all at once. Choose one or two that seem the most doable, stick with those for a week or two, and make the other changes as you feel ready.

  1. Eat veggies at every meal: If you only eat veggies at dinner time, this tip is for you! Include veggies at every meal, even breakfast. Try mashed beans in your oatmeal or cucumber in your smoothie. And instead of snacking on processed carbs like crackers, go for carrot chips to satisfy crunchy, salty cravings.
  2. Include protein, fiber, and healthy fats at every meal: This is the magical trifecta to help you feel full and satisfied and to stabilize blood sugar levels. Choose lean proteins, whole grains, produce, and legumes for fiber and avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil for healthy fats.
  1. Have one huge salad as a meal once a day: Whether it's a quinoa and black bean mason jar salad for lunch or a roasted butternut squash and kale salad for dinner, eating a salad for one meal not only helps you get your share of fiber and veggies, but since it's low in calories, it'll help you lose or maintain weight.
  2. Make lunch your biggest meal: Consuming more calories midday than at breakfast or dinner ensures you have enough time to burn all those calories. Think of lunch as about 40 percent of your total daily calories.
  3. Eat until you're 80 percent full: Down with the clean plate club! Instead of putting the fork down when your plate is empty, eat slowly, and pay close attention to how your belly feels so you can stop eating when you're satisfied but not stuffed.
  4. Go vegan once a week: To encourage you to eat veggies, fruits, legumes, and whole grains, pick one day a week to go vegan. Skipping meat, dairy, and eggs will allow you to focus on eating all those plant-based foods experts are always telling us to eat more of.
  1. Swap artificial and processed sweeteners for natural sources: Studies show eating artificially sweetened foods and beverages makes you feel more hungry, so you'll end up eating more total calories. As for refined white sugar, the more we eat it, the more we crave it - sugar addiction is real! Plus studies show eating sugar actually ages you and has been linked to cancer, liver damage, heart failure, and other serious conditions. It can also make you feel bloated and foggy-headed. Avoid the obvious culprits such as candy, desserts, and soda, and also avoid processed foods, as these contain tons of hidden sugars. When sweet cravings strike, go for fresh or dried fruit or these healthy dessert recipes.
  2. Be consistent about meal planning: Choose one day a week where you can devote a few hours to plan, shop, and prep meals and snacks for the week. You'll not only save time and money, but you're more likely to stay on the healthy path once you have that intention set for the week.
  3. Put down the salt shaker: Too much sodium not only affects your blood pressure, but it can also damage your organs and tissues and cause that bloated feeling that leaves you feeling sluggish and uncomfortable. Aim for no more than 2,400 mg a day (under 1,500 mg is even better) by avoiding processed foods that are high in sodium - make sure to read the labels because even bread, dressings, and sauces can contain obscene amounts. And don't reach for the salt shaker out of habit. Season your food with fresh herbs or garlic instead. Also go for unsalted nuts and seeds and the butters made from them.
  4. Indulge once a day: Don't give any foods up completely. Denying yourself the bites you crave can backfire, causing you to feel deprived, resulting in bingeing and feeling depressed. So make a point to keep yourself happy and your cravings satisfied by allowing a small treat every day, such as a square of dark chocolate or a small glass of wine.

The Most Shocking Beauty Makeover of the Year Unexpectedly Came From Leo Messi - and His Blond Hair

No, this wasn't a prank. And no, it wasn't a wig. Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi actually went blond back in July 2016. After his devastating loss in the Copa America Centenario in June, a few legal issues, and a subsequent much-needed vacation with his longtime girlfriend in Ibiza, the forward for FC Barcelona showed up for the team's training in England sporting a totally different look - he looked so different, we wondered if he had trouble getting through security.

Leo was not the first celebrity to go blond after Copa America wrapped up. In June, James Rodriguez stepped out in Miami with platinum strands that didn't even make it to his birthday just a few weeks later. Though Leo changed his mind about his new look pretty quickly, too, we will never forget his sudden 2016 makeover. Keep reading to see more photos of Leo's blond hair.

Cop Has an Important Message For All After a Boy Was Killed by a Drunk Driver on Christmas

In the early hours of Christmas morning Officer Tori DelliCarpini and her team responded to a double fatal crash on the Capitol Expressway in San Jose in which 14-year-old Andrew Nguyen, who was in the car with his parents, was killed. The crash was caused when the other driver, a 25-year-old woman who was reportedly drunk and had an outstanding warrant for a prior DUI, drifted into oncoming traffic and hit the family's car head-on.

"No parent should ever have to bury their child," Officer DelliCarpini of the San Jose Police Department wrote in a post to Facebook. "This collision bothered me. All collisions and loss of life calls bother me, but this in particular made my heart ache. This family lost their son on Christmas morning to something that NEVER should have happened."

Officer DelliCarpini continues her post by describing how it felt to visit the boy's family with 10 other officers after the accident.

A family member hesitantly answered the door because they've been hounded by the media since the incident occurred. He was speechless and invited us into the family's home, quickly closing the door behind us. As we all crowded around the living room table, the boy's father came down the stairs, obviously sore from his injuries. His wife remained upstairs, still in too much pain to be mobile. We presented the flower basket and card to the father and uncle. They couldn't believe we came to see them, let alone so many of us.

And as we stood there, I noticed one thing. . . . All of the boy's Christmas presents were in a pile on the coffee table. Presents that I'm sure were hard-earned and deserved, and supposed to be opened just several hours after the accident. The father and uncle insisted we stay for a picture. I know I stood in the living room wishing I didn't have to be in the picture, but I did . . . And so did the rest of my teammates. I hope that picture remains private.

I also hope it doesn't remind the family of pain and loss and grief, but of love and support and comfort. As we left their home to go to our respective beats all over the city, the father and uncle shook all of our hands and thanked us repeatedly. I'm not posting this for attention or for recognition, but to simply say this: It's not just other drivers and passengers that are affected, it's not just friends and family, it's not just mothers/daughters/fathers/sons. It's everyone. Medics. Fire. Police. Dispatchers.

"Don't drink and drive," she wrote. "The devastation felt has a ripple effect. Have a designated driver, call an Uber, call a taxi, sleep in your car, stay at a friend's place, call your mother, hell, call the police. . . . I'd rather take you home than have to feel how my team and I felt on Christmas morning. That family will never be whole again."

1 Subtle Tweet From Netflix Suggests Gilmore Girls Is Getting Another Season

This week, Netflix hinted we might get a second season of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life after all. By now, you've probably burned your way through the allegedly "standalone" reboot at least once, if not more. Tragically, in the wake of the season, we're not entirely sure who Rory ends up with, especially in light of those last four words. Even in spite of this massive cliffhanger, the situation was supposed to be a done deal: we'd get one more season of the beloved series and that would be it. However, Netflix tweeted a cryptic hint on Wednesday has has us rethinking everything.

The tweet is actually a throwback to that time April Nardini inadvertently discovered Luke Danes was her father by way of science fair project - this is in a later season of the original show, for the record - but it's been altered. In this case, the three images are Rory's old flame Logan, a mysterious Star Wars-clad character, and her boyfriend Paul. Could the tweet be hinting that more is to come, and that the future episodes of the series could all focus on the identity of Rory's co-parent-to-be? Only time will tell, but seeing as we got so many hints about the original season through social media, it's not out of the question. Keep your fingers crossed, friends.

Miley Cyrus Will Win You Over With Her Wedding Dress

I don't know when or if Miley Cyrus is getting married. Maybe she doesn't even know. But in my imaginary world, she walks down the aisle in a pretty spectacular wedding dress. You see, ever since I was young, I looked at Miley as someone who represented versatility. She played two different characters on Hannah Montana, and my younger sister plastered posters of Miley all over her walls, some in which she was dressed up like Hannah, others in which she was just herself, in jeans and a three-quarter-sleeved tee. But even when she was just being Miley, the actress and singer looked unique and a little bit quirky.

She's gone through many stages, but there has never been a time when Miley's paid attention to trends. During her rise to fame, she wore flares and cowboy boots, maybe because they were representative of where she came from: Franklin, TN. Post-breakup with Liam Hemsworth (the two have recently rekindled their relationship), Miley kind of went HAM with her wardrobe. And I liked it. What she wore, or didn't wear, was all a part of her personal revolution.

Miley's style at this point could basically be described as costume like. She dressed as a twerking teddy bear and supported LGBT rights in rainbows and big, furry coats. Then, at the 2015 Met Gala, the industry's elite gathered on the red carpet, but Miley stood alone in a cutout Alexander Wang gown. It ended up on some "worst dressed" lists, but I think it was my favorite outfit of the night. It didn't seem like Miley was trying to appear sexy or edgy but just to look like herself.

So now, as outsiders speculate whether Miley and Liam are engaged, I can't help but to imagine her would-be bridal look. I doubt Miley Cyrus's wedding dress will be all white. It might be neon, a mix of colors, or come with an inflatable skirt. Miley might not wear a wedding dress at all, should she get married. Maybe she'll go naked. She recently revealed on the Today show that she prefers to stay out of the fashion conversation: "I don't want people to talk about what I'm wearing. That's usually why I don't wear too much," she said.

One thing's for sure: if Miley Cyrus gets married, her look won't include a ballgown so glamorous, everyone focuses on the pretty (or crazy!) details. They won't be talking about The Dress, because god knows it won't be wearing her. It'll be all about Miley. Read on to see why we know Miley will hit it out of the park on her special day.

5 Tips to Help You Eat a More Plant-Based Diet in 2017

Whatever your reason, eating less meat is a good thing: meat recalls, environmental woes, financial cost, and ethical concerns are enough to turn even the most Neanderthal-esque carnivore into a sprout-lovin' vegan. If weight loss is a concern, cutting back on meat is also a simple way to reduce calories and up nutrients in your diet. But for those of us that can't resist the lure of a juicy burger, luscious pork belly, or the satisfying saltiness of bacon, it's becoming harder to reconcile what we want with what's best. Barring becoming a vegetarian, one way to handle the whole being-a-responsible-meat-eater thing is to do what you can to eat more plant-based foods in the upcoming year.

Give Yourself a Weekly Meat Budget

Instead of making the meat the main attraction of your meal, think of it as a side dish. An easy way to cut back is to give yourself a meat allowance of about a pound a week. This still allows you to have bacon with your Sunday brunch, or throw in some chicken breast with your salad, but it encourages you to use fresh produce and whole grains for the majority of your meals.

Take Part in Meatless Mondays

Can't go vegetarian on a daily basis? Give yourself a goal of cutting it out at least one day a week. As this becomes easier, you might add on extra days or follow the Vegan Before Dinner diet, popularized by cookbook author and food advocate Mark Bittman. Giving up meat doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing choice; small changes can make a big impact. A recent study indicates that livestock production is responsible for a whopping 20 percent of human-caused greenhouse gases, and that eating less meat can reduce your carbon footprint.

Wean Yourself Off Slowly

A great tip we got from Lisa Eberly, MPH, RD, is to give meat up gradually. "Start by going to white meat sources, then to fish, then move to high-fiber and high-protein grains and beans," she said. Doing so allows your mind and body to adjust to the change without feeling deprived. Eberly also stresses that whole grains and legumes are essential in a vegetarian diet. Not only are the nutrient-rich, but they are a satisfying replacement for meat. Bean burgers, anyone?

Find Satisfying Substitutes

Giving up meat isn't always easy, the flavors and texture can be hard to replicate. To make the shift a little easier for yourself, Eberly suggests that in addition to whole grains and legumes, you incorporate starchy veggies like squash and sweet potatoes because "they feel more feel more filling than leaner veggies." Lori Zanini, RD, CDE, also echoes this and suggests mushrooms as a good stand-in for meat. "They're savory, very versatile, and great source vitamin D," Zanini said. If veggies still won't cut it, try meat substitutes that mimic the taste and texture of the real thing like The Beyond Burger, tempeh bacon, or Gardein chicken strips.

I Did All of This, but Still REALLY Want Meat

If all of the above fails, and you find that you are still craving meat at every meal, you may be low in iron or need protein, says Eberly. Make sure to incorporate vegetarian protein sources and plant-based, iron-rich foods in every meal. Doing so should help you feel satisfied and give your body the nutrients it's craving.

No Star Has Ever Pulled a Style Switch-Up Like Selena Gomez

The performer has managed to successfully define her style from the street to the red carpet to the stage, but as they say, "it takes a village." Selena credits much of her transformation to stylist Kate Young, who she began working with in 2015 while promoting her Revival tour.

Selena has become a face of the brand, repping her favorite fashion house at the Met Gala and beyond. In 22 photos, you can see how she's held onto her sex appeal but embraced sophistication, all while managing to keep her feet firmly planted on the ground. Of course, it helps when you're rocking Louis Vuitton's sturdy platform boots.

Why I Will Never, Ever Grow My Hair Long Again

We've all met at least one woman with enviable waist-length locks who won't stop complaining about how terrible having long hair is. You might be wondering what could be so bad about it, especially if you've struggled to grow out your strands. As a woman who cut it all off, the answer is simple: long hair is boring and it gets in the way of everything - including your confidence.

All the women in my family have long hair and treat it as a trophy. For my entire childhood, I wore superlong braids and ponytails because styling my mane in any other way was just "too much" for my mom. It would constantly get caught in my backpack zipper and my classmates even swirled my braids around like jump ropes. I felt like a human playground. Because my parents believe lengthy strands are a symbol of beauty, they made me swear that I would never cut my hair.

My feelings toward my mane changed during my senior year of college. I finally felt like I was coming into my own and was in pursuit of a career. The kid with the long locks I saw in my reflection didn't match up with the poised woman I was becoming. It was time to cut my hair and embrace a more sophisticated style.

After seeing Instagram photos of Tia Mowry and Jessica Alba wearing blunt bobs, I knew it was my destined chop. It exuded effortless sex appeal, proving that you don't need long locks to feel feminine. Armed with an album full of style inspiration, I headed to see my stylist, Koni Bennett; and for about two hours, I sat back in her chair and watched as thick wads of hair collapsed to the ground.

What I anticipated to be a time of mourning turned out to be one of the most liberating days of my life. As I looked in the mirror, I saw me! Not a weighed-down, boring person, but the fierce young thang I know I am inside. I walked around feeling grown, in charge [cue Beyoncé's "Grown Woman"], and just downright hot. I quickly forgot I ever had long hair.

Multiple times, I'd been told that I would be filled with regret after my cut and that I would do anything to get my strands back. They said my hair would never grow again and that I would spend a fortune on extensions to replace my mane. These statements are all absolutely false.

Sometimes I wonder what my life would currently be like if I hadn't chopped it all off. All I can imagine is still feeling drowned and trapped by a head full of hair hiding my face and stifling my confidence. Have you been considering cutting yours? Don't be afraid of what your friends and family may think or worry about not being girlie enough. The idea that you have to have long hair to be beautiful is complete BS. Yes, it will take some time to get used to feeling the breeze tickling your neck. But I can assure you: once you crop your coif, long hair will be a permanent part of your past.

Halloweentown: How Debbie Reynolds Shared Her Movie Magic With a Whole New Generation

Hollywood lost yet another legend when Debbie Reynolds died of a stroke on Dec. 28. If Your Child Received a "Dud" Hatchimal For the Holidays, Here's How to Hatch It

After the hectic few weeks leading up to the holidays in which all parents and their children could talk about were Hatchimals, many thought that the buzz over the season's hot toy would come and go with the holiday - but they were mistaken. Now that thousands of children have opened up their coveted interactive toys, instead of playing with them gleefully until the next big thing comes around, hundreds of children's speckled eggs caused tears and disappointment as they didn't seem to do the one thing they were meant to after opening the box: hatch.

Parents are rightfully upset that following the grueling hunt for these Furby/Tamagotchi-esque toys, it seems that the product didn't completely deliver. Many have taken to Twitter with the hashtag #HatchimalFail to air out their frustrations.

Spin Master has since been in contact with families who have complained and has posted a long list of tips on its Facebook page to help parents make sure that their child's furry friend will hatch from its egg as planned. "We are sorry to hear that some of you are having challenges with your Hatchimals," the company wrote, followed by a list of potential issues and how to solve each one, a link to a helpful YouTube video, and customer service information.

Alison Brie's Engagement Ring Looks Pretty Darn Fabulous From All Angles

There's nothing like debuting your flashy new engagement ring on the red carpet, especially when you match it to the rest of your accessories. When Dave Franco's fiancé, Alison Brie - perhaps you know her as the stylish Trudy Campbell from Mad Men - stepped out to promote her film Sleeping With Other People, she did just that.

The actress completed her white and black textured Prabal Gurung midi dress with her sparkling rose-gold diamond ring, which matched her simple bangle and, yes, even her metallic ankle-strap heels. Brie's accessorizing was on point and, in our opinion, a total fashion-girl move. Read on to zoom in on her gorgeous new bling, and keep Alison's genius styling trick in mind!

Everything We Know About Fashion We Learned From the Mary-Kate and Ashley Movies

There is one undeniable similarity that all fashion girls share: we are all die-hard Mary-Kate and Ashley fans. Not only are they the CFDA award-winning designers behind The Row and Elizabeth and James, they're also street style savants who totally gave rise to the grungy-cool look we've all tried to emulate. But the truth is, we've been seeking inspiration from Mary-Kate and Ashley for quite a long time. We watched the duo's every film, from To Grandmother's House We Go to New York Minute, and we grew up stealing their style secrets from the screen.

Whether you begged your mom to buy you a printed bandanna because Maddie Parker totally rocked one in Our Lips Are Sealed or you collected butterfly clips to wear with your velvet spaghetti-strap cocktail dresses thanks to Passport to Paris, Mary-Kate and Ashley have been steadfast fashion icons since you were watching them on VHS.

Read on for 50 times you wanted to look like both Mary-Kate and Ashley all at once, even when they were both wearing totally disparate looks. They weren't kidding when they said, "it takes two."

You'll Cry When You See This Dad Open His Christmas Gift From His Son

Ordinarily, parents don't expect lavish gifts from their children for the holidays. One lucky father got the surprise of his life when his 11-year-old son gave him a huge, wrapped present for Christmas.

In the short video, the unsuspecting father tears open his gift to find another smaller wrapped box inside. He continues to open the boxes, just to find smaller wrapped boxes each time he opens one. The son and his grandmother insist that it was only his son's idea but that he got all of the boxes from her.

Finally, the father opens that last wrapped box and sees his gift, a PS4 game console. In the background, a family member says, "That's why he asked for money for his birthday, so he could buy you this gift." The proud dad looks at his son and says, "Are you for real? You made me cry."

The generous act is beautiful evidence of the relationship the two family members share. Watch the video above to see the touching moment.

The 19-year-old actress and singer posted the video above on Twitter to show off her new (and shorter!) curly tresses, which were just dyed a gorgeous deep blue hue with darker roots.

9 Iconic First Lady Gowns Worth Talking About

Traveling to Washington DC two days after what will surely be the most important election of my lifetime was scary. I'm not going to lie. I heard rallies outside my hotel room all night and passed angry mobs holding signs outside the Trump hotel. But during the day, while Barack Obama met with President-elect Donald Trump inside the White House, the streets were quiet.

I traveled with a small group of editors to the first ladies inaugural dress exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum, and it was only there, in that small, dimly lit room, that I could feel myself starting to relax. The first sign was a poster on the wall that featured a Q&A series: "How will the first ladies collection change when a woman is elected president?" Using the term "when," not "if," instilled hope. Then I veered off, where a short film of Michelle Obama donating her Jason Wu gown to the museum was playing.

So Much More Than a Dress

"This gown is one of the most tangible things I have left to remember that day. At the end of the day today is about much more than this gown. It's also about how with enough focus and determination someone in this room can be the next Jason Wu. Someone can be the next Barack Obama . . . Something you create today can help teach the next generation in a way that nothing else can," Michelle said at the podium.

Her dress was absolutely one of the most intricate on display, what with its Swarovski crystal embellishments and impeccably organized beading. But these dresses I was admiring, some of which dated back to the 1800s, were not made to make the first ladies feel pretty. Each one signified a new beginning.

"Inaugurations are times of optimism . . . In addition to attending ceremonies and balls, incoming first ladies announce the agendas and special projects they intend to pursue. Some projects are ambitious. Some are traditional. Some may be controversial," read a sign on the wall.

Just like the fashion choices they make. And it's true: every first lady was scrutinized for her style, even if she wasn't viewed as an icon. But it was the choices she made in that suit, the momentous speech she gave in that ballgown, that we'll remember. If a floor-sweeping dress is one way to preserve these memories, why not learn everything we can about it? Why not try to understand why Michelle wore white or Lady Bird Johnson chose a simple yellow sheath?

The Legacy, The Future

As I traveled around the exhibit, reading about each gown and the woman who wore it, I passed a very young girl staring up at a picture of Michelle and Barack Obama on Inauguration Day. "Who's that?" her mother asked her, pointing up at a glowing Michelle. "It's the president! They're both presidents!" she screamed.

The first female president will not be sworn in on Jan. 20. In fact, the Smithsonian Museum will make space for one more dress when Melania Trump accepts her role as FLOTUS. But until then, let's consider the takeaways I learned about the first ladies who stood before her.

Each of the facts ahead is proof that these strong women, from Lady Bird Johnson and Jackie Kennedy to Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, were compassionate. They thought of function first, then fashion. They embraced the spotlight, not because of what they were wearing, but because of the confidence they felt when wearing it. All of the women I learned about were leaders. They had what it takes to lead a nation, and one day, a lady as determined as them will. When you're finished reading, I think you'll agree.

Ellen DeGeneres Just Reminded Us How Cute and Adorably Chubby Diego Luna Was as a Kid

Diego Luna just had what might be the most epic interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show ever. We wouldn't be shocked if the Mexican actor, who is promoting his new amazing role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, decides to only ever sit down with Ellen when promoting new projects. She not only pulled out an amazing throwback of Diego during his childhood telenovela actor days (featuring a cameo by his BFF Gael García Bernal) but she also made his childhood birthday dream come to life by giving him a Power Wheels car. Just look at the picture below to see how excited Diego was about that!

The 36-year-old actor, who has two kids with former wife and Thalia's niece Camila Sodi, also talked about how surreal it is to appear in the Star Wars franchise, saying: "A Mexican in Star Wars, come on! And in a role that actually lasts more than 10 seconds, right?" Press play above to see the full entertaining interview.

It's not just the holiday season, it's bikini season - a few solid weeks before the award ceremonies begin and fashion month ensues, and plenty of supermodels are taking a much-needed rest. Jourdan Dunn is unwinding in Barbados, and she packed a very trendy bikini for her trip. Could This Theory Explain Why Dementors Are So Drawn to Harry Potter?

Throughout Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry is consistently pestered by the deathly cloaked guardians of the wizard prison: dementors. After his first few encounters with dementors cause Harry to black out and recall the sound of his mother's murder, he asks his favorite teacher (and arguably the best character in the series), Remus Lupin) why his reactions to the dementors are so strong.

Professor Lupin explains that Harry has more dark moments in his past than most people, so there is more pain for the dementors to drudge up. However, there's also another explanation for why the soul-sucking prison guardians can't seem to get enough of Harry. One Redditor laid it all out in a supershort theory that makes so much sense, it's ridiculous.

[Harry Potter] The reason Dementors are so interested in Harry is because he has 1.125 of a soul from FanTheories

Because dementors seek to suck out the souls of their prisoners, it's plausible that they are especially drawn to Harry because - as it is revealed in the last book - he actually possesses a fragment of Lord Voldemort's soul as well. When Voldemort accidentally created a horcrux out of Harry, further splitting his soul, he unintentionally implanted a bit of himself into his infant nemesis. Therefore, until he comes back to life at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry possesses not one soul, but one and one-eighth, rendering him all the more alluring to the dementors.

Do you agree with this theory? Let us know your favorite idea about Harry Potter that isn't (officially) canon in the comments!

This Dominican-American Poet's Spoken-Word Piece Sends a Powerful Message to Latinas

Dominican-American poet Elizabeth Acevedo eloquently said everything you've always wanted to say about your hair in a powerful piece. Through spoken word, she takes on the discriminatory beauty standards in the Latino community, specifically the idea that "good hair" is straight hair, saying, "My mother tells me to fix my hair, and by fix she means straighten. She means whiten." And that's just the first line. Prepare yourself for all the chills when you watch the full performance above. Her empowering message will inspire you to stop trying to "fix what was never broken."

Carey Mulligan Opens Up About Her Beloved Grandmother's Struggle With Dementia

Carey Mulligan tends to keep her private life just that, but she recently chose to open up about a topic close to her heart: her 91-year-old grandmother, Nan. The Oscar-nominated actress guest hosted BBC Radio 4's Best of Today show this week, where she spoke freely about Nan's struggle with dementia, which she was diagnosed with in 2004. "When we leave she won't remember that we've been there, but the sensation of being in the company of someone who loves you is something that we can't deny people," she said. "There's a calmness and companionship, and these really fundamental feelings of being loved and being taken care of by family who really love you. I think that's something, regardless of how progressed your dementia is, that stays with you."

The proud mom to 1-year-old Evelyn didn't downplay the severity of her grandmother's illness, candidly explaining that each moment with Nan has its ups and downs. "It gets so awful and we've had terrible visits where we've all ended up in tears, but then we have the visits where something really magical happens," she explained. The Suffragette actress's grandmother currently lives in an assisted living home in her native Wales, and Carey and her family have discovered ways to reconnect with her. "She was a great lover of music, and she taught me to sing and she taught me to play the piano, and we realized that a lot of the times, just playing music and sitting with her was just the sort of loveliest time that we could spend with her," she said. "Music is something that has often come around for people who have dementia that it's a way of linking to the past, it's a nostalgic thing, it's a calming thing."

Although dementia can be quite debilitating, Carey aims to get rid of the negative stereotypes that people frequently associate with the disease. "I used to grow up hearing a lot of people referring to their grandparents having 'lost their marbles,' which is of course something that we'd never say about somebody who'd had cancer or heart disease," she said. "I think the understanding that dementia is a disease - it's a disease of the brain, there are lots of different kinds of dementia, Alzheimer's is one of them - and just spreading that awareness so that people really understand that this is a disease we have to fight."

The 1 Thing You Need to Remember When Parenting Starts to Suck

Ever feel guilty because the "joys of parenting" sometimes seem anything but joyful? Our friends over at YourTango are sharing the one thing you need to remember when parenting starts to, for lack of a better word, suck.

Put parental disappointment in perspective.

Is this taboo? Can I talk about when this joyous thing called parenting is disappointing?

Whether you have a newborn who is screaming all night or a 40-year-old adult child living downstairs, there comes a point (well, many of them maybe) when a parent thinks, "Wait ... this sucks! I hate parenting."

Before you get offended, let me acknowledge that talking about the not-so-great parts of parenting does not in any way negate the amazing, heartwarming, life changing miracle that parenting is. Parenting really is a miracle. But, sometimes, it's also truly disappointing.

Often parents take on way too much guilt which, of course, only further impedes our good parenting moments. We are never off the hook as parents but that doesn't mean we are destined to a life of guilt, guilt, and guilt.

So, let's be real. Mom to mom. When you're having those super-bad days and you want to know where you can go throw in the towel, stop, take a deep, slow breath and try to find one thing that is good right now about your kid at this moment.

It's there. I promise you.

Often, when we feel disappointed, it's not our kids we are disappointed in, but ourselves.

When they do the crazy things that they sometimes do, it reflects on us and we are disappointed in our perceived failure to transform this ball of potential into a fully functioning productive member of society.

We're scared. Sometimes I actually tell my teenage son, "I'm not disappointed in you. You are awesome. I'm disappointed in me." (Don't try this with a toddler. It won't work.)

The good news is that you don't have to be perfect. Good enough parents create amazing adults! I envision parenting as creating a net. A fully functioning net is comprised of what? Holes.

Even the best parents inadvertently create some emotional holes in our children because we're only human. Those holes give our children the opportunity to build strength, which is a necessary quality in a functioning adult.

A net without holes is not functional. What that means is that there is grace for our mistakes. We all make them and we will learn and our children will grow from them.

We lose the joy of relationships with our children when we are so focused on the end result.

The next time you're disappointed, try letting go of your idea of the finished product and focus on the beauty that's right in front of you. Focus on your relationship and the rest will take care of itself.

Halloweentown's Kimberly J. Brown Posts a Bittersweet Tribute to Debbie Reynolds

What do you say about a woman who had such an impact on your life both professionally and personally?

Debbie lived her...

Posted by Kimberly J. Brown on Wednesday, December 28, 2016

Hollywood has been flooded with emotions since Debbie Reynolds died of a stroke on Dec. 28, and rightfully so. Not only did the news come just one day after the death of her daughter, Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, but the 84-year-old also touched many lives with her memorable roles in movies and shows. Since news of her death broke, some of her famous costars have been sharing their fondest memories of her on social media, including her onscreen granddaughter Kimberly J. Brown. On Wednesday, the actress, who starred opposite Reynolds in the Disney Channel franchise Halloweentown, posted a moving tribute on Facebook alongside a photo of them on set:

What do you say about a woman who had such an impact on your life both professionally and personally? Debbie lived her life like all of us should, to the fullest. She was bold, funny, and had the biggest heart. Her sparkly smile warmed every room she was in, and her jokes about her amazing career and life would make your stomach hurt with laughter. Making people happy through her performing was her favorite thing to do, and she showed me at a young age what a gift it is to be able to do that for people. She was so talented and wise, which easily could have gone to her head, but instead she went out of her way to help others shine as brightly as they could. She'd try to move huge ladders on set just to help the crew, and looked out for every actor no matter the size their role. Her humility, grace, and care for others inspired me so much as a teen and is something that will always stay with me. "Being normal is vastly overrated" is a quote from Halloweentown, and how fitting it is that her character spoke it. Her generosity, talent, and loving spirit made her anything but normal. Thanks for the magic, Debbie. Rest in peace.

You Won't Have to Look at Shay Mitchell's Swimsuit Long to Notice This Detail

Once the temperature dips below a certain degree, we get the urge to travel - preferably to a warm, sunny location, where we can rock a swimsuit instead of a puffed-up parka. Shay Mitchell is likely feeling the same, as the star 'grammed a throwback pic of herself in a Positino, Italy, shower, showing off white shades and a stylish green one-piece. The photo made us feel a tad emotional - oh, how we miss those beach-ready days! - but we still "oohed" and "ahhed" over Shay's sexy swimwear, which included fun cutout details on the back and side.

Yet while the weather (especially on the East Coast) isn't exactly appropriate for this type of get-up, the color choice couldn't be more perfect. Considering the recent holiday season, green pieces are a definite must, and Shay's little snap is a great reminder to start scooping 'em up. Scroll through to see Shay's suit once more, then shop something inspired by it - both for vacation and not - ahead.

Sofia Vergara Is as Sexy Now as She Was in Her First TV Commercial at 17

In the ad, a blond Sofia (fun fact: that is her natural hair color) is trying to get to the soda stand, but the hot sand proves too much to handle. She has to improvise a path by stripping down to her bikini and laying down her clothes, stepping on them to get a refreshing soda. The commercial was widely played in Latin America, making Sofia a household name and marking her first acting role as an iconic '90s moment. I Changed My Dog's Food, and It Changed Her Life

I have made my cat-lady tendencies well-known. What I haven't shared about as much is my other love: my 14-year-old first love, Winnie. She is a sweet old Boxer mix who we rescued from a field 14 years ago and brought home to join our family. While the whole family loves her, she's my dad's best friend.

As can be expected with old age, Winnie's health has started to decline a bit. She can't hear very well, she can't see very well, and she has pretty significant arthritis. However, when any of my young nieces or nephews are around, Winnie tries her hardest to play with them and exerts all the energy she can manage. And while we know she's inevitably going to slow down even more as her days go by, our family couldn't help but see if there was any way we could help keep her as healthy as possible. That's when we learned about Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind for senior dogs.

This dog food comes in two categories, one for seniors over 7 and one for adult dogs. The senior variety is designed to keep old dogs' minds sharp, and the adult variety is more of a protective formula to keep your dogs' minds from aging as rapidly. The food is chock-full of botanical oils that supplement the brain, which encourages it to behave how it did when the dogs were younger.

But would it actually work? Can you actually help keep a dog from aging? I met with Dr. Brian Hare, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at Duke University and all-around dog expert, to discuss my Winnie and see what this food could do for her. He asked me a lot of questions about her behaviors and her life overall and said we should try Bright Mind for 30 days to see if we spotted a difference in anything.

My dad, aka Winnie's bestie, was in for anything to keep his dog happy. So we got the food, and my dad painstakingly measured out the old and new to switch her over properly before she was solidly on Bright Mind.

And then we waited.

I visited Winnie about three weeks into her 30 days, and I immediately noticed a difference. You know how when animals get old their eyes get really milky and cloudy? Winnie's had been that way previously, but after being on Bright Mind, her eyes had cleared up. They'd gone back to being deep brownish black with no cloudiness at all. My mom also said she'd been perkier, which is saying a lot considering she is 14 years old and can't handle much activity.

Thinking maybe the nutritional value in Bright Mind had added to Winnie's overall well-being, I asked Dr. Hare about it. He said, "The thing about Bright Mind is that it nurtures the mind and the body," rather than just helping dogs physically. Because, according to Dr. Hare, when older dogs start to forget their basic commands or routine activities, it's very possibly a mental deterioration rather than a physical one.

It's now been several months since Winnie's been on Bright Mind, and she's as perky as she was 10 years ago. It's actually pretty incredible to see. So if you've got a senior dog (7 years old or older) whose mind just doesn't seem as sharp, I highly recommend trying Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind for senior dogs. It'll give you your pup back.
