Make Your Glass of Bubbly Even Fancier
Champagne and sparkling wine are pretty fancy on their own, but if you're looking to make the moment even more special, we've got a few simple ideas for you.
- Use berries: Drop a few fresh raspberries or blackberries in your glass for a fruity addition. The delicate champagne bubbles will get trapped in the berry, and you'll be left with a fizzy treat at the end of your drink. Pomegranate seeds are another great option, as they float really sweetly among the bubbles.
- Make a champagne cocktail: This classic libation involves a sugar cube, bitters, and just a touch of Armagnac.
- Play with interesting liqueurs: A bit of cassis transforms a glass of champagne into a kir royale. Play around with your favorite liqueurs, like St-Germain or crème de violette, to create memorable drinks.
- Create a sugar rim: Get crafty with your champagne glass by using sanding sugar. Colorful sugar rims are unexpected and playful.
- Make a strawberry garnish: A strawberry can make a lovely garnish - one that makes any occasion even more celebratory.

11 Netflix Hacks to Make Binge-Watching So Much Better
Source: POPSUGAR Photography / THEM TOO
Calling all Netflix fans! Whether you binge-watch or just occasionally browse, your streaming experience is about to get so much better. Sure, sitting back and watching all your favorite shows is easy enough, but you can also sync up and watch with a friend, improve what Netflix suggests, and much more. Read on to see how you can improve the experience and make your next Friday night in an amazing one.
- Clear your history: Are you embarrassed about giving into nostalgia and watching an old episode of Gilmore Girls? You can easily shake that by heading into "Your Account" on the top right corner and clicking on "Viewing Activity." From there, just tap the "X" to clear whatever it is you watched.
- Find a new genre of movies to watch: Stuck on what to watch? You can use the secret Netflix genre codes to find all sorts of categories of movies and shows. Use the URL, http://ift.tt/1Oj1bRU, and then plug in a genre code from the list that What's on Netflix has.
- Use only high-quality playback: Some of us just want to watch in the best resolution possible when we're at home and it's super easy to set that up. Head to your account again, tap on "Playback Settings", and set your preference to high.
- Save your data plan: Watching Netflix on the go has its perks, except when it comes to your data plan. In order to use the least amount of data possible, head back to "Playback Settings" and set it to low.
- Change the size (and color!) of your closed-captioning: You'll find this setting in your account, under "Subtitle Appearance". Click on that and you can change the size, font, shadow, and color of the text.
- Kick your ex off your account: It's no secret that we all share passwords for streaming services, but sometimes those relationships end and it's time to get back what you pay for. To kick someone off your account, head to "Settings", tap on "Sign out of all devices", and boom - now that person can't get back into your account!
- Memorize all the keyboard shortcuts: There are several, but the most useful ones are hitting "F" for full screen, "M" to mute, "Enter" to play and pause, and using the up and down keys to adjust the volume. For more advanced users, hitting shift and the left arrow will rewind a show, and holding shift and the right arrow will fast forward.
- Get a slew of extra information about shows and movies: With the NEnhancer, a Google Chrome extension, you can see IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes ratings, trailers, and plenty more that will help you pick out a great movie or show. If you don't want to download the extension, Rotten Tomatoes has a section devoted to what you can watch on Netflix (and other streaming services).
- Watch with your friends: Thanks to a handy Google Chrome extension, Showgoers, you can sync up and watch something with your friend at the same time. Both of you just need to install the extension and pick a film or series, and it should sync flawlessly.
- Pick something to watch without trying: It's always hard to choose a single movie or show, but two websites exist to solve that. Flix Roulette lets you set a preference and it will choose a movie for you. A Good Movie to Watch has movies you might not have heard of to watch on Netflix.
- Skip those pauses: Indulge in your binge-watching and use Netflix Pause Removal, a Chrome extension that lets you skip the 15 seconds in between episodes.
Looks like "Netflix and chill" just got a little easier.

42 Epic Birthday-Cake Fails
The effort parents put into having a special birthday cake for their children is deserving of a slow-clap standing ovation. Be it store-bought or homemade, birthday cakes are basically the most important part of a child's birthday, so we do whatever it takes to get them the confectionary of their dreams (even if it doesn't always pan out). Maybe that is why I literally can't stop laughing at these birthday cake fails. I'm actually a pretty terrible cake decorator, and because misery loves company, I absolutely love all these images.

Make Your Life Easier By Learning Alton Brown's Hack For Juicing a Lime
Thanks to Alton Brown, it's easier than ever to juice a lime and store it for later. Alton covers half a lime in plastic wrap, cutting a small slit on one edge. When squeezed, the juice drizzles out neatly from the slit in the plastic wrap (no squirts in your eye or over the counter). Plus, since the lime is covered, you can easily stash it back in the fridge if you don't end up using the whole half. Take a look at the clever technique below.
Want to put lime or lemon juice where you want it instead of all over your counter or in your eye? Cover in plastic wrap and make a small slit on one edge. Squeeze what you want then pop the rest in the fridge.

How to Host Like Martha Stewart Without Breaking a Sweat
Hosting your first dinner party is a major milestone; sure, you've had friends over for cocktails or thrown a raucous house party, but those are different beasts altogether. A dinner party might seem imposing at the outset, but really it shouldn't be; follow these 10 guidelines commandments and you'll pull it off no problem.
- Keep your guest list manageable: Stick to six to eight people (including yourself); not only is it less stressful to host a smaller group, but it's more budget-friendly as well (cooking for a big crowd adds up!). While there's no need to stick to one friend group - a dinner party is, of course, a great way to introduce mutual friends - it's generally a good idea to avoid a guest list entirely made up of strangers.
- Consider hosting on a weeknight or a Friday: While it's tempting to choose a Saturday as you'll have more time to shop, prep, and clean your house, a weeknight dinner party (or even Friday) comes with lower expectations and therefore less pressure. Plus, you won't eat up your entire weekend getting things ready. With some advance planning and outsourcing, a Wednesday or Thursday is totally manageable, plus it'll be a fun break from your (and your guests') weeknight routine.
- Send out the invite at least a week ahead: Schedules fill up fast, so send out invites one to two weeks ahead of time. If you're inviting a group of friends, a mass email is fine; if not, email or text everyone individually. Alternatively, a Paperless Post invite adds a grown-up touch. Make sure to inquire about dietary restrictions so that you can plan around any.
- A week before your party, assess your inventory: While there's definitely no need to have matching plates, silverware, glassware, and napkins, do make sure that you have enough of each for the entire group. CB2, West Elm, and Ikea are all great options for inexpensive table settings. (We're fond of CB2's water glasses and stemless wine glasses, as both clock in at $20 for a set of eight, so you won't be too peeved when one breaks, as they inevitably will.) Don't overlook napkins. While there's no need to splurge, paper towels don't cut it (sorry). Channel a French bistro by using striped dishcloths, go the tear-off route, or if you have enough dish towels in good condition, use those.
- Get creative with serveware: Don't stress if you don't have a collection of platters and serving bowls (really, who does?). Instead, arrange appetizers on a wooden cutting board; serve the main course in a casserole dish, cast-iron skillet, or dutch oven; and present salads in a mixing bowl.
- Feel no shame in outsourcing: Most will probably bring a bottle of wine or some beer, but if one of your guests asks what they can bring, suggest their favorite cheese and a baguette or a couple pints of ice cream for dessert. Likewise, don't feel the need to cook every dish; go store-bought with at least one major element, whether it's appetizers (think nuts, olives, and charcuterie) or dessert (a pie from your neighborhood bakery or a few pints of really good ice cream are great options).
- Prep as much of the menu ahead of time as possible: Leave dishes that need to be finished at the last minute, like a delicate salad or pan-fried fish, for when you have a couple dinner parties under your belt. Instead, fill out your menu with foods that are meant to be served chilled or at room temperature. Consider a braise or soup for the main course, as these typically improve overnight and only need to be reheated. Do as much of the cooking as you can in the day or two prior to your party.
- Don't overlook ambiance: Like dinner prep, don't leave cleanup to the last minute; do the dishes, take out the trash, wipe down the dinner table, and tidy up high-traffic areas like the bathroom the night before. Put together a playlist earlier in the week, or queue up 8tracks. Consider picking up some inexpensive flowers (Trader Joe's and Whole Foods both have good options), dim the lights, and decorate the table with a handful of unscented tea lights.
- Serve the meal family-style: If you have a large enough table, pass dishes around; alternatively, set up a buffet in the kitchen or on a side table (grab a coffee table from the living room if need be). Plating the meal is stressful on both fronts; it's one more thing for you to think about, and your guests will feel the need to clear their plates, regardless of their hunger level.
- Keep the alcohol flowing: While you can expect some of your dinner-party guests to bring booze, don't rely entirely on this. Even if you explicitly ask everyone to bring something they'd like to drink, have some wine or beer chilled and ready for when the first people show up. Unless you're a teetotaler, savor a preparty glass of wine or beer while you put the finishing touches on your party; it'll set a convivial mood and loosen you up. (If you're stressed out, your guests will be too.)

How Did Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Meet?
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are without a doubt one of the sweetest couples in Hollywood, but many fans will be shocked to know that their romance actually started by accident. The two first met on the set of their 1997 movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, but they didn't actually start dating until three years later. "We had made plans for dinner with a mutual friend and the person canceled," Sarah told People about their first date. "We decided to have dinner anyway and never looked back." Since tying the knot in 2002, the pair have welcomed two children, a 7-year-old daughter named Charlotte and a 4-year-old son named Rocky, and shared a handful of sweet couple moments. Selena Gomez’s Airport Pants Are Hard to Find, Which Is Why You’ll Appreciate Them Even More
Our no-fuss airport look always involves a pair of comfy leggings, a piece Selena Gomez seems to love, too. While most would choose simple black leggings, Selena opted for a beige Wolford pair - in leather no less - while walking through LAX. The unusual color and choice of material made her travel outfit stand out from the rest. And given that they're also (sadly) no longer available to shop, it's easy to see why Selena is keeping this version on hand. She first wore them back in 2015. The singer kept it simple with a cream-colored sweater, Dear Frances boots, and a necklace that said "13" on it.

The couple, who recently rang in their one-year wedding anniversary, jetted off to French Polynesia last week to celebrate the holidays as well as Joe's 40th birthday; Sofia shared a photo of her handsome husband checking out the sunset on Wednesday, writing, "My bday boy," while Joe tweeted a snap of Sofia enjoying the ocean that he captioned, "Makes life easy when you wake up to this view."
Neil Patrick Harris Drinks and Raps During His 73 Questions With Vogue
Neil Patrick Harris is the latest celebrity to participate in Vogue's "73 Questions," and we have to say, his interview is very interesting. While answering questions about everything from where he thinks Doogie Howser is now (hint: in rehab) to what kind of father he is to twins Gideon and Harper, the actor shows off his insane home, which has a movie theater, the actual booth from How I Met Your Mother, and a bar. While we usually learn a few fun facts about our favorite celebrities through these videos (did you know NPH has a guest book at his house for visitors to sign?), he really lets you into his sweet home life and answers some hard-hitting questions. Neil's husband, David Burtka, even makes a fun cameo as they answer questions at the same time. Now, when can we come over?

11 DIY Beauty Remedies Your Grandma Always Talked About That Actually Work
Every abuela has one: that wild concoction she whips up from ingredients in her kitchen and swears by every time you have a pimple, dry skin, unruly hair - you name it. As kids, most of us rolled our eyes and went along with it, but we've done a little digging, and it turns out maybe Grandma wasn't so crazy after all. Many of those beauty recipes actually work! Warning: do try these 11 practices at home for smooth skin and silky hair - or get these beauty buys that are also grandma-approved.
1. Using mayonnaise as a deep conditioner for healthy hair.
According to hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins, this old-school method works because of the fat to protein ratio. "The oil softens the hair, making it shinier - and the protein in the eggs will make strands stronger." He recommends applying the treatment to dry hair, and leaving it on as a mask for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo twice, and condition afterwards. But, Hawkins notes, this treatment works best for hair that isn't fine or limp.
2. Dabbing nails in olive oil for a healthier look.
Nail expert Stephanie Stone debunked the myth (common in Dominican culture) that rubbing garlic on nails will make them strong (according to studies, it has no benefit). But, she says, applying olive oil (a popular DIY beauty ingredient in Puerto Rico) on nails and cuticles throughout the day is a great way to improve their health. "Keeping your hands and nails moisturized is key, especially if you're trying to repair damaged nail beds. I'd also recommend applying it lightly throughout the day instead of a full on soak. But consistency is key!"
3. Coconut oil as a body moisturizer.
"This one 100% works," says dermatologist (and Sofia Vergara's derm!) Dendy Engelman, M.D., of coconut oil for soft skin, a popular technique in many Latin American countries. "Coconut oil is mostly made up of saturated fats and medium-chain fatty acids, which help repair the skin barrier, trap water to hydrate skin, and also reduce inflammation. And recent studies show it's also a great treatment for eczema."
4. Adding honey to hair conditioner for softer tresses.
A custom common in Caribbean Latin America, honey is a natural moisturizer, which Hawkins says does work to help rehydrate your locks. And using unprocessed honey will give you an extra bonus: it's full of enzymes that will help create a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff.
5. Agua maravilla to fight blemishes.
Also known as witch hazel, this is common in many Latino families, especially from Puerto Rican and Dominican backgrounds. Engelman says it works because the mixture contains anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibacterial properties. Engelman also recommends Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Refreshingly Clean Towelettes ($6) to control blemishes and calm bug bites.
6. Washing hair with Coca-Cola for shine.
This is a long-time favorite technique among not just Latino families, but celebrities like Suki Waterhouse. Hairstylist Nunzio Saviano gives this traditional trick the thumbs up: "The acidity closes the hair cuticle, which makes it look healthy and shiny. But be careful: the sugar can leave your hair sticky, so you might need to rinse it out quickly. Apple cider vinegar is an alternative that might not be as messy!"
7. Beach sand as a skin exfoliant.
"Sand is essentially finely granulated rocks, so it's perfect to remove excess dry skin cells," Engelman says. "But because it's so abrasive, I'd only recommend you use it to exfoliate feet. It might be too harsh for other parts of your body."
8. Manzanilla grisi shampoo to lighten hair.
Saviano says that this traditionally Mexican and South American product - which contains Flor de Manzanilla and claims to both wash and lighten hair - does work, but he would use it sparingly. "This will maintain your tone and even lighten it at times, but if you use it too much, your color might become dull or even fade."
9. Grape skin paste for glowing skin.
Grapes are a gold mine, says Engelman. "They'll have a brightening effect over time because they contain vitamins B6, C, and A, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, selenium, and flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and remove toxins from the skin."
10. Sugar and lemon juice as an antiaging exfoliant.
According to Engelman, the sugar crystals act as an exfoliator, sloughing away dead skin, while the lemon juice helps peel away dead skin cells because of their content of alpha hydroxy acid (which is found in many antiaging treatments). Exfoliating is important, Engelman says, "because as we age, our skin doesn't shed as effectively. Plus, getting rid of dead cells helps your moisturizers penetrate better."
11. Avocado for healthy cuticles.
"Actually, rubbing avocado oil on cuticles is more effective than actual avocado," says Stone. But good news for avocado lovers: "Avocados in a healthy, balanced diet will help you see overall improvement in your hair, skin, and nails, too." Bring on the guacamole!
What's the Difference Between Champagne and Prosecco?
Whether you're ringing in the New Year or just toasting the fact that it's almost Friday, there's always a reason to say "cheers" with Champagne. Of course, not all sparkling wine is classified as Champagne - and that's just the start of the confusing jargon. To help you choose a standout bottle of bubbly, we've put together a guide to all of the relevant vocab, so you can sort out the doux from the cru.
- Sparkling wine: A catchall term used for any bubbly without a specific regional designation, this is often applied to American wines.
- Champagne: Sparkling wine produced in the French region of the same name. The "Champagne" definition was protected by the Treaty of Versailles, but since the US never officially signed it, some older American producers use the Champagne name, too.
- Cava: Spain's contribution to the sparkling family is named for the cellars in which it is produced.
- Prosecco: A sparkling wine produced in Italy, mostly in the Veneto region.
- Brut: A dry variety of sparkling wine and the most common.
- Extra brut: The driest of the dry. Also known as brut sauvage.
- Extra dry: A midpoint between sweet and dry sparkling wines, these popular wines are only slightly dry. Not to be confused with "extra brut."
- Demi-sec: A bit sweeter than sec, but not as sweet as doux.
- Doux: The very sweetest sparkler, typically served as a dessert wine.
- Sec: Slightly sweet, even though the name actually translates to "dry" in French.
- Nonvintage: A sparkling wine produced from a blend of multiple years of grapes. Denoted with the abbreviation "NV."
- Vintage: A sparkling wine produced from a single year of grapes.
- Grand cru: A wine that comes from the highest-quality vineyards.
- Cuvée: A somewhat misleading term that indicates the bottle comes from a blend of wines, often kept secret by the winemaker.

Even Lupita Nyong'o Can't Stop Thinking About Her Teenie-Weenie Bikini
Everyone scrolls through old vacation photos on their phones to reminisce, including Lupita Nyong'o. The actress posted a throwback shot from her trip to Bali five months ago, where she was chilling poolside with a drink in hand. On that trip, Lupita wore an unforgettable swimsuit: a yellow, ruffle bikini by Soshanna. The vibrant hue not only stood out in the scenic snap, but also complemented the actress's skin. She styled the bikini with a pair of oversized shades and a beige sunhat.
Based off Lupita's photo caption, "Take me back!" it appears she's feeling nostalgic for Bali and maybe, her swimsuit. We don't blame her for reposting an old bikini 'gram. One look at the yellow bathing suit and you can practically feel the sunny vibes. Read on to see for yourself.
How to Get Out of a Workout Rut
Don't panic at the thought of getting back into a workout routine if you've been slacking off for a while. Start anew with these trainer tips for getting back into a healthy routine.
It's common sense: The thing about living healthfully is that a lot of it is just common sense, says celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak. When you can make a few healthy changes, do it. It doesn't take much thought to know that moving around burns more calories than sitting all day or that you can get your exercise for the day by walking to the store instead of driving.
Every little bit counts: Harley also says that remembering this can help you make the common-sense decision. Instead of thinking of exercise as a daunting, boring task, think of your goals in smaller increments. Every step you walk or healthy food choice helps you to your goal.
Don't overdo it: Going all out after not exercising for a while can take its toll on your mind as well as your body. To prevent injury and a discouraged feeling, start small and work your way up slowly when you're ready. "Take it slowly; bite off sizable aspects of your fitness routine that you can complete; don't underdo but don't overdo," celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson tells us. "Overdoing it is going to kill it. You can't overhaul your entire fitness and health regimen in one day."
Make it realistic: Not only should you not overexert yourself when you first start, but you also shouldn't make goals that you know you can't meet. Make sure that you're not scheduling more than you can do when you first start a workout routine, and pick a time of day that you know you can stick to as well. "You find a time during the day when you can make your workout, because if you're fighting for time, that's always going to be the first thing that goes," Gunnar says. "You also have to add just enough [time to your workout] so that you can always maintain it and you never have to skip it."

To All the Moms Who Hate When I Call My Dog My "Baby"
I'm the mother of two amazing baby girls. One is an adorable 7-month-old who loves hearing the sound of her own squeals and is rightfully obsessed with water faucets. The other is a 2-year-old spitfire who, when not running around in circles, is always up for a cuddle. One is a human baby, and the other is a "fur baby." There, I said it. One of my babies is a dog.
A very opinionated mom spoke out recently against people like me, parents who dare to call our dogs our babies. And she made some valid points.
No, I didn't give birth to my puppy. No, the fact that I adopted her does not count, and I better not ever make that comparison again. No, my dog can't say "I wuv you, Mommy" or take care of me when I'm old. No, last I checked, I can't drop humans off at doggie day care. And, no, my dog technically isn't a "person."
But, hell yes, my dog is my baby.*
In fact, it wasn't until the first week with my new puppy that I decided I wanted to be a mom at all. A mom to a human baby, that is. Before my dog Moose, I never felt that maternal love, that mothering sensibility that only came when my husband and I welcomed this tiny creature into our home. Our hearts opened up in a way we never thought possible, and like a drug, we were intoxicated and wanted more. So now Moose has a younger sister.
I've gotten my share of eye rolls for calling Moose my daughter's sibling or for telling my mother-in-law that she was actually already a grandmother by the time my human baby was born, and I can certainly appreciate the ridiculousness of that. (I'm reasonable, I swear.) But, I've gotten tired of hearing so many fellow moms grossly trivializing the relationship a parent can have with her pet.
Moose isn't just a domesticated animal we let live in our house. For my family, she serves a far greater purpose. My dog, often to her own detriment, has trained me to be a better mom. I've made more mistakes than I'd like to admit with Moose (the classic first-born child!), but I have her to thank for teaching me some of the greatest lessons I could ever learn as a parent, namely that . . .
1. You're able to make sacrifices more graciously.
Moose forced me to change, and I accepted the challenge, even if it put a damper on my social life - spontaneity was a thing of the past, date nights involved the help of an expensive dog walker, and conversations revolved around house-training and which neighborhood had the best obedience schools. The only difference with a human baby is those conversations take place on a playdate, not at the local dog park.
2. You won't always get it right the first time.
When we first brought Moose home, we had a cozy crate all set up for her. Too bad she hated it. She cried every night until finally, my husband and I broke down and let her sleep in bed with us. And she's never left. Because of Moose, we made sure to keep the human baby in her crib - as much as we understand the allure of cosleeping, our bed just wasn't big enough for one more.
3. You're more aware of your bad behavior.
I have a temper, and before my daughter was born, I'd yell. Loudly. I assumed it was only my husband who suffered my wrath until one evening, I saw Moose, quivering under our dining room table. Her big, sad eyes spoke volumes, and, now, every time I start to raise my voice, I think of her face. It's one I hope to never see on my daughter's.
4. You'll eventually chill out.
When you're type A, the adjustment to dog ownership is intense. You quickly learn you can't have nice things, or, if you insist on having nice things, they'll likely be peed on, chewed up, and covered in dog hair. This wasn't easy for me, but it primed me for my daughter, who now gets a mom who actually enjoys making a complete mess of carrot puree.
5. You can't take a time-out.
When I was pregnant, we just moved to a new city, and Moose was acting out. I felt that I had enough on my plate, so I let her bad behavior slide. I'm still paying for it.
6. You will never, ever stop caring.
Too many people warned me that I wouldn't care as much about Moose when my human baby was born. Instead, I love her more than I ever did and, dare I say, equally to my daughter. For all of Moose's issues (and she's got a few), I love her unconditionally, without caveat or constraint.
And as I type this, my two babies are playing on the floor. The human baby tugs on the fur baby's ear until the fur baby jerks her head away and gives me a knowing look. You're right: my dog will never be able to tell me what she's thinking. But the truth is, she doesn't have to.
*It doesn't hurt that the pup in question is a 13-pound Boston Terrier mix who loves to be kissed on the nose and carried in the cradle position.
