How to Organize a Small Pantry in 20 Minutes or Less

Having a clean kitchen starts with an organized pantry, but that can seem like such a daunting, time-sucking task. Some (myself included) avoid it until the crumbs, the jumbled piles of snacks, and whatnot become too unbearable to avert any longer. I Konmaried my kitchen (and whole house) about a year ago, a process that involves intense purging, and even though I gutted the place and neatly positioned each item that "sparked joy," I've discovered the junk does occasionally find its way back into my shelves with each birthday, Christmas, and shopping haul. But that's OK, because I know how to zap it before things get too out of control. You will too with these simple tips.

*Keep in mind, this process may take around 20 minutes if you have a small pantry like mine (about 4 feet squared) and much longer if you have a walk-in pantry.

  1. Remove every single item in your pantry. Place them on your kitchen counter or on a table.
  2. Wipe down the shelves of the pantry with a warm, damp sponge.
  3. Toss expired and/or opened foods that you haven't eaten recently. Donate any unopened, unexpired foods (that you will never plan on eating) to a food bank. If you're having trouble deciding to keep something or not, hold the item and look at it. If it gives you a sinking, nagging feeling, toss it or donate it. Keep the foods that make you flutter with excitement and hunger at the sight.
  4. Group like items before putting them back in the pantry. For instance, group oil together, cereals together, beans, snacks, etc.
  5. Consider which items you use the most frequently and position those in the easiest-to-reach area of the pantry. For my roommate and me, we're big tea drinkers, so I moved all of our tea and coffee items to the prime spot in the pantry. Save the top shelves (that are harder to reach) for bulkier items that you use less frequently. For me, that's oils, vinegars, dried beans, etc.
  6. Scan the pantry, and make sure you can see all the items you've stashed. Otherwise, they may get lost and forgotten about once again. Even though the shelves of my pantry are deep, I'm only using a few inches. I've positioned each of the jars and bags toward the end of the shelves with the labels facing outward. I can clearly see and read exactly what I have in my pantry plus this particular technique gives the pantry a naturally attractive appearance (no baskets, lazy Susans, or organizing equipment necessary)

Andrew Garfield Goes For an Oceanside Stroll With His Parents Over the Holidays

Andrew Garfield has been having a pretty amazing last few months. After generating plenty of Oscar buzz for his roles in both Hacksaw Ridge and Silence, he took a break from his busy schedule to spend quality time with his parents, Lynn and Richard. The adorable trio stepped out the day after Christmas in Malibu, CA, and hit the beach for a leisurely stroll. Andrew linked arms with his dad (who was rocking matching sunglasses with his son, naturally), while his mom walked along behind them. Not a bad way to keep the inevitable postholiday depression at bay, right? Thanks to Andrew's multiple nominations in upcoming award shows, we'll likely be seeing a lot more of him soon. Here's hoping he'll bring his parents as his dates to at least one of the big events!

Watch Kit Harington Adorably Complain About Having a Birthday the Day After Christmas

If you have a December birthday, then you can definitely relate to Kit Harington's latest video. During an interview with W magazine, the Game of Thrones actor opened up about what it's like having a birthday the day after Christmas. Not only is it amid the holiday chaos, but his birthday actually falls on another holiday in England: Boxing Day. While Kit complains about the lack of presents, he does admit that he always gets to spend the day surrounded by family and friends. "I just never get enough attention," he admitted. "But I never get enough attention." Well, we would definitely beg to differ!

Kylie Jenner Strips Down For a Wet and Wild Short Film With Tyga

So far, Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Tyga have appeared in a number of (PG-rated) videos throughout their bumpy relationship, including the rapper's music video for "Stimulated" and a fun-filled clip promoting Alexander Wang's Fall 2016 campaign. Their latest, however, might take the cake. Directed by photographer Sasha Samsonova and featuring music from Niia (that will soon be featured on everybody's sex playlist), the steamy video - which was released on Christmas as Kylie's "surprise gift to the world" - shows the reality star getting hot and heavy with her boyfriend in the shower. Scenes vary from artistic interpretations of a white t-shirt contest to topless cuddling, so watch it at your own risk.

5 Ways to Keep the Spark Alive in Your Long-Term Relationship

Singer, actress, fashion designer, entrepreneur, writer, and mom of two Thalia shares her parenting, lifestyle, fashion, and beauty tips as POPSUGAR Latina's contributor.

Being married or in a long-term relationship is a blessing, but it is not easy. It requires work, effort, lots of patience, and infinite understanding to succeed. If it were too easy, where would the excitement be? After a good number of years together, some couples start becoming more friends and less lovers, and some drift apart due to conflicting work schedules and separate interests. But there are things we can do to make it better, to work on keeping the spark alive! Here are five tactics I like.

Respect each other.

First and foremost, we have to understand that people in a marriage, long-term relationship, etc. need to respect each other's individuality. It is not about wanting to change your partner and telling them what to do and what not to do. It is about accepting the other person exactly as he or she is. Remember why you got together in the first place and the qualities that attracted you to your partner. I still cherish the moment I met my husband. We were on a blind date arranged by mutual friends. The qualities that attracted me to him that day are still the main reason why I love him so much today.

Develop a joint plan and make memories together.

Maybe both of you would like to renovate the house? You are eager to start a new yard project or try every single restaurant to find the best burger in your city? Recruit your partner! Be creative and enthusiastic about it! Share ideas and find common ground. By helping each other, and planning projects together, you become closer as a couple and you end up spending quality time together. There are so many ways to achieve this! You can also plan a trip, exercise to lose some weight together and support each other, or go rock climbing! The important thing is to make it fun and enjoy each other's company.

Remember to have your own time to do the things you like.

I have talked about having "me time" before, and it also applies to this one. We all have friends we like to see, hobbies, interests, and personal appointments we like to do and take care of on our time. It is important to find a balance in a relationship, and this includes being happy with yourself. For example, I like to get together with my girlfriends for lunch or meet them for dinner and a play in NYC. Seeing my friends makes me happy, and my husband is the same way. If you are both communicating and agreeing on your activities outside the relationship, and you are committed, and respectful of your partner's feelings and needs, it should work out.

Write a joint bucket list.

My husband and I have our own bucket lists, but we have decided to find items from them that we can do together. In my case, I am much more of an outdoor explorer and extreme-sport enthusiast, but he is not. Therefore, we have discussed trips and activities that we would both enjoy, and those include traveling through Cambodia, spending a whole month at a beautiful beach town fishing and relaxing, and visiting Machu Picchu in Peru, among others. If you both review your lists and interests together, you will see that a great adventure is just around the corner!

Keep the flame of love alive.

Even though it sounds like a total cliché, don't dismiss it yet. This is of utmost importance! Without love for each other, there is no relationship left. My motto is "small details go a long way." Leave a sweet note on your partner's desk or inside his/her pockets or bag. Text a simple, loving note at a random point during the day. Those things work. Many times, people lose perspective and forget why they got married in the first place. And even though in some relationships, passion may dwindle, if there is still love, there is a base to continue being happy. Show you care; show you want to be close.

Sitting down to watch a TV show or a movie together is a good opportunity to be close and feel each other's warmth. I love it when my husband softly scratches my back, massages my shoulders, or when we simply hold hands. That physical contact can be so powerful! It is important in order to create and maintain a lasting connection. Endorphins will get high and brain chemistry will allow you to feel the love.

These are some of the reasons why I love doing what I call Hug Therapy ("Terapia de Abrazos") on my social media accounts on Saturdays. It encourages loving each other. I am not an expert on love and relationships, but if I can help one person succeed in a long-term relationship, I will be extremely happy. It is great to feel loved and to give love, and I would like for you to experience that, too. I am a hopeless romantic - what can I say?

Your Questions on Our Clean-Eating Plan, Answered

What You Need to Know

Can I start whenever I want?
Yes! Of course. We know that not everyone can start on a Sunday or on Jan. 1. Just follow the plan as it is laid out since many of the daily recipes use ingredients cooked or prepped on previous days.

What if I don't like almond milk?
Any nondairy-beverage alternative can be used in this plan as a substitute for almond milk. Hemp, rice, coconut (that is, a coconut milk beverage, not canned coconut milk), flax, soy, etc. C&J suggests you opt for one that is fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

Do I have to give up coffee and tea?
There is no reason to cut out coffee and tea completely since doing so can often sabotage the success of a plan like this. But don't go crazy! Limit yourself to no more than two eight-ounce cups each day - 16 ounces is a Grande at Starbucks. Do drink your coffee or caffeinated tea by noon, since these beverages can interfere with sleep. If you like milk in your coffee, try it with an unsweetened dairy alternative, like soy or almond. Or try your coffee black - you might just like it.

Do I have to give up alcohol?
Yes. See if you can de-stress without that glass of wine or cocktail. Give your body a break from the boozy holiday celebrations of the last two months.

What is the average daily calorie count?
All the meals, snacks, and treats included add up to about 1,600 calories per day. The carb, protein, and fat ratio is close to 50:20:30. The carbs are high fiber and minimally processed. The protein is lean, and the fats are primarily plant-based.

When should I eat the snack and the daily treat?
The creators of this plan, C&J Nutrition, recommend not going more than four to five hours without a meal or snack, so use the snack and treat to ensure this timing happens. A daily meal schedule might look something like this:

7 a.m. breakfast
10 a.m. snack
1 p.m. lunch
6 p.m. dinner
8 p.m. treat

You can also eat your snack or treat in midafternoon if you are eating dinner later in the evening. Basically, you want to eat when you start to feel your stomach rumble, but before you become overly hungry. You want to blunt the hunger pangs a bit before you eat your next big meal. It's much more difficult to make wise food decisions, like portion size, when you're well past the point of being hungry and have entered the low-blood-sugar "famished" territory.

I don't like canned tuna - what can I use instead?
If you don't like canned tuna, you can substitute canned wild salmon in any recipes that use tuna.

What is a good protein substitute for a vegetarian?
The key when using vegetarian protein substitutes is knowing the amounts that will provide a roughly equal amount of protein and calories, as well as the best substitute from a culinary perspective.

For nutrition purposes, in place of every 4 ounces of beef, chicken, or fish you can use:

  • 1 cup beans or legumes (such as black beans, white beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, lentils and cooked out of the shell edamame)
  • 8 ounces (about 3/4 cup) firm or extra firm tofu, or 2/3 cup tempeh
  • 2 eggs + 2 egg whites, which contains 171 calories and 20 grams protein - if you eat eggs

For the best substitute by protein type for taste and texture, here are some tips:

  • In place of canned tuna or salmon in a salad: eggs work well, as do canned beans (white beans, black beans, kidney beans), which you can mashed lightly or leave whole.
  • In place of roasted, grilled, or baked meats: tofu and tempeh steaks can easily replace work welll. We recommend choosing firm or extra firm tofu and draining well (press the tofu by placing the block between two paper towels and topping with a heavy pan top or plate) before preparing.
  • In place of eggs: use crumbled tofu, or tofu steaks (slice a steak-like piece from a block of tofu and prepare like a whole eggs would be cooked in olive oil).

Tips

Hydrate: Be sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water each day and even more when you exercise. Some people need more water than others, and the best way to tell if you're dehydrated is to check the color of your urine. It should look pale yellow to almost clear. If it's looking more like apple juice, it's time to drink up! Water and herbal tea are great ways to hydrate.

Be Open-Minded: You might be trying new foods in this plan, like socca, a thick pancake made with chickpea flour, and congee, a rice porridge popular in many Asian countries. But this plan also takes popular favorites and gives them a twist, like making savory oatmeal, which might sound odd if you're used to adding brown sugar to your morning oats, but it's fun and filling meal.

Freezing Meat: After shopping, you should freeze any meat that you are using later in the week. You want to protect the meat from air, which can "burn" it. Wrap the meat tightly in plastic wrap, and then place in a ziplock bag. Label the bag with the freezing date and type of meat.

Thawing Meat: The safest way to thaw meat is in the fridge. The night before you plan on cooking frozen meat, take your cut of meat out of the freezer and place it in the fridge, still wrapped. Small cuts take about 24 hours to thaw. You can also place small cuts of meat in a bowl of lukewarm water.

Why 2016 Was Dwayne Johnson's Best Year Yet

2015 was a big year for Dwayne Johnson; he starred in Furious 7 and San Andreas, and welcomed daughter Jasmine with girlfriend Lauren Hashian, but it looks like this year may be his best one yet. While being crowned People's Sexiest Man Alive is definitely up there on his list of achievements, there are a number of other moments we're still not over (and why would we be, really?). From his return to WWE to his sexy shirtless scenes for Baywatch, look back at Dwayne's year.

That Time Queen Letizia and Salma Hayek Were Together - and We Didn't Know Whose Outfit We Loved More

Queen Letizia is known for donning some truly gorgeous outfits while tending to her royal duties as the queen of Spain, and considering we're feeling super nostalgic this time of year, it's time for a look back at one of her sexiest LBDs to date: the sparkly cocktail dress she wore to Premios Woman in April 2015, where she just so happened to present none other than Salma Hayek with an award - making our brains basically explode because whose outfit do we look at first?

The Spanish royal showed off her toned shoulders and supershort hair in the strapless below-the-knee number, and let's just say she looked stunning beside Salma, who was wearing a coral-hued fit and flare dress with a dainty bow detail. Keep scrolling to relive the moment two of our favorite worlds (celebrity and royal) collided on stage.

Which is Healthier: Tofu or Tempeh?

Whether you're a vegetarian or not, everyone can benefit from regularly eating meatless meals. Non-GMO soy products are easy and healthy sources of protein that you can use as an alternative when trying to cut back on meat. They can also be added to recipes like smoothies or desserts to increase the protein.

Tofu is probably the most popular soy product, but tempeh shouldn't be overlooked. Check out this chart below to see how they compare.

Tofu Tempeh
How it's made By curdling fresh, hot soy milk with a coagulant By fermenting cooked soybeans with a mold
How it's sold Five-inch-size blocks, in five varieties: silken (used for creamy dishes), soft (great for soups), firm, and extrafirm (the last three are great for stir fries); packaged in water to help it stay moist Flat rectangular pieces about eight inches long
Appearance White, smooth, and wet Brownish in color and dry; can see whole soybeans
Consistency Soft, smooth, and spongy Firm and chewy
Flavor Has hardly any taste on its own, but when added to recipes, takes on the flavor of whatever you're making Has a slight earthy, sweet taste
Calories in 1/2 cup 97 160
Protein (g) in 1/2 cup 10.1 15.4
Fiber (g) in 1/2 cup .5 3.5

Although a little higher in calories, tempeh is less processed than tofu, and it's healthier in general because it contains more protein and fiber than tofu. If you've never tried tempeh, you can find it at most health food stores (it's refrigerated). Incorporate this soy product into your recipes by crumbling it up and adding it to soups, salads, casseroles, or pasta sauces. Tempeh adds a chewy consistency to your dishes along with extra protein and fiber.

Either way, both offer a healthy dose of protein for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Try this colorful Mexican quinoa salad featuring tempeh. If you're not quite a fan of the tempeh texture and you prefer tofu instead, try this tofu scramble with kale and sweet potatoes.

Why It's Time to Embrace Seasonless Clothing

Telling yourself you'll stick to a budget is one thing. Following through with it, though? That's harder than it sounds - especially for fashion fanatics. We simply love shopping, stocking up on stylish It pieces that'll fill out our wardrobe and make it something special. But with a new year comes new trends, and 2017's biggest one might actually end up saving you money.

Seasonless fashion is on the rise, meaning it's time to invest in staples rather than of-the-moment items. It's layering, materials, and even lengths that are pushing this movement along, and designers are releasing see-now-buy-now collections, showcasing what's hot now - and likely will be for a while. Scroll through for reasons you, too, should get on board. Then shop what you'll need to help you do just that.

The Color You Should Wear More of in 2017 Isn't Black, but It's Pretty Damn Close

For most fashion girls, a head-to-toe black outfit is a sacred look because you always look good and it's easy to put together. With the new year quickly approaching, however, we're challenging ourselves (and you) to make some tiny style changes, starting with: wear a little less black and a little more navy. You're probably thinking, "Navy? That's random," but if you've been paying attention to street style photos, you know it's a shade It girls have always worn. Navy works as a base with everything from bold prints to bright colors and even pairs well with edgier pieces like leather.

In fact, the street style shots ahead prove the neutral tone is as versatile and easy to coordinate outfits with as black. We even had to squint a few times at our screen to tell the dark hues apart. Although black will always be a safe and classic color, do give it a rest and give navy a chance in 2017. You may even realize there are navy items hanging in your closet already. But if there aren't, we have it taken care of with some shopping ahead plus some tips on how to style the color.

4 Reasons Women Should NEVER Breastfeed in Public

Enough is enough, ladies! It's time to end the is-it-OK-to-breastfeed-in-public debate once and for all. Mother of two Kristina Kuzmic took to YouTube to outline the four main reasons women should never, ever breastfeed in public, and it's utter genius . . . likely because it's nearly three minutes of hysterical, all-out satire.

From the fear that a breast could be exposed for like a second (or, "like two . . . two seconds!") to the fact that moms shouldn't even need to go out in public, she's making a solid case for those who've long been victimized by nursing moms.

And if her reasoning doesn't convince you, she brings up a valid question: "do these breastfeeding moms even want to have children, or did they just have them so they could ruin everybody's day with their exhibitionism?" Think about that.

7 Times James Corden Made 2016 a Little Less Sh*tty

It's safe to say that 2016 was a little bit rough. Despite the entertainment world losing too many legends and celebrity breakups being at an all-time high, there were some bright spots. Since taking the US late-night scene by storm with The Late Late Show in early 2015, James Corden's star has steadily continued to rise. He combines his British charm and stellar humor each night on his show and is finally becoming a household name. While we loved James back in his Gavin & Stacey days, we also couldn't be more excited for everyone to know who he is.

In 2016, James really killed it with his Carpool Karaoke sessions, something he actually dreamed up years ago back in the UK. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood hopped in the car with him, which in turn gave us some of the most LOL-worthy moments of the year. From his singing skills to his overall personality - which he put on display at this year's Tony Awards - take a look at these seven James moments that made 2016 worth it.

Hitting the Gym but Not Losing Weight? Here's Why

Have you been working out, eating right, losing weight - then suddenly you hit a wall? Perhaps you've been doing all the right things and still not seeing any results. This plateau might feel like a dead end in your weight-loss journey, but there's hope in the form of new research.

Last week, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) published a 13-week study with new research about subjects they call "non-responders." The conclusion: you need a personalized balance of cardio and strength training to see results.

If you suspect you are a "non-responder" and your body isn't budging despite your healthier choices, you're not alone. A separate study from the Cooper Institute found that many people - "20 to 45 percent of some populations," according to a press release - are in the same boat. ACE's study suggested that "considerable heterogeneity" in exercise can lead to "adverse effects."

Think back to your exercise schedule. Is there enough variety? Is it personal to you? If the entirety of your fitness routine is purely group cardio classes, it's time to break the cycling cycle! ACE's research showed that "a unique combination of functional fitness, resistance training, and cardio workouts eliminates the non-responder phenomenon." This means the only way to break through a rut, wall, or plateau in your fitness journey is to mix it up; individualized programs are imperative if you're not seeing progress.

Here's how the study went: exercises were split into two groups of exercisers (it was a small group - 46 subjects in total). One group was put into an "individualized training" group, while the others were in a "traditional exercise" group. "Between two groups, 100 percent of participants with individualized training saw positive results, while 35 percent of the traditional exercise group showed no significant health improvements."

The "traditional exercise group" was the control group; they were "not instructed to not do any formal exercise." The individualized group received more instruction, which was a balance of functional movement, resistance training, and cardio. We've heard before that a combo of cardio and weight training is the best way to lose weight via exercise, and this is more evidence.

"The individualized group saw more significant health improvements in almost every metric," ACE said in a press release. This included an improvement to "VO2 max" (your lung capacity and performance ability), as well as "muscular fitness and key cardiometabolic risk factors."

It's important to note that in addition to a balanced routine, each participant in the individualized group received a plan that was specific to their bodies and abilities in order to optimize their results. While movement of any kind is important for your health, if you've got fitness goals and seem to be hitting a roadblock, it's time to consider a plan that is more tailored to you. At the very least, start mixing up your workouts with both cardio and resistance training.

You Have to Watch This Video of One of Salma Hayek's Very First Audition Tapes

"I'm Salma Hayek. I'm 20 years old." That's how Salma timidly introduces herself as an inexperienced acting student at Televisa's Centro de Capacitación in Mexico in this amazing '80s audition tape. Thank you, Despierta América, for making our TBT dreams come true with this amazing clip of the Mexican actress, courtesy of the Televisa archives.

In the video, above, young Salma - rocking big, curly hair and lots of bright makeup - acts her heart out . . . at a telephone. But even with no real experience, Salma's natural talent was super obvious at this stage in her career, because she totally made us believe this inanimate object could be her boyfriend. Fast-forward nearly 30 years and Salma has evolved into a seasoned actress with many respectable roles under her belt, a gorgeous sense of fashion, and a sexy French businessman for a husband to boot.

Giada De Laurentiis Reveals the 1 Surprising Ingredient She Adds to Pasta

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis is known for celebrating her Italian heritage through her cooking. So naturally, she was the perfect woman to host the New York Wine and Food Festival's Italian Table event in New York City.

I caught up with her inside the Giada Vegas booth to chat about pasta, the importance of learning how to cook "lemon spaghetti" (which somehow sounds so much more enticing when she says it with her Italian accent), and the basic supplies to keep stocked for quality Italian fare. Giada's booth was swarmed with crowds all night long, where she was busy personally handing out her delicious muffuletta sandwich to throngs of devoted fans. Seriously, I'll be thinking about that sandwich for at least the rest of the week.

"I do brown rice, with olive oil and salt. I like a carb for breakfast, and I like a savory breakfast. If you start your day with sugar, you're jacked for the rest of the day. I get up really early in the morning, so I need a carbohydrate. So I'll do 1/4 cup of brown rice, with warm olive oil and salt. At my restaurant I do oatmeal, olive oil, salt, and marcona almonds for protein."

Why It's Important to Stop Drinking Shots of ACV

There's a lot to love about apple cider vinegar. Several studies support the claims that ACV helps the body lose weight and debloat. It also doesn't hurt that it's been shown to up energy levels either. And did we mention you can use it to wash your hair?! Before you start guzzling the bottle of ACV in your pantry, keep in mind that there's a right and a wrong way to drink the elixir.

First thing's first: while straight shots are a popular way to drink ACV - don't. Because its highly acidic, over time ACV has the potential to do real damage to both the esophagus and tooth enamel. Instead, dilute ACV into water. In general, one to two tablespoons mixed into eight ounces of water is the sweet spot (like you'll find in this delicious ACV honey drink).

Now that you have the formula down, you need to know exactly when to drink it if you're looking to reap any weight-loss benefits. Carol S. Johnston, PhD, directs Arizona State University's nutrition program and has been studying ACV for more than 10 years. Johnston recommends drinking an ACV drink once or twice a day and always right before you eat; you want the ACV to be in your stomach before any food makes it way there.

Johnston told the Washington Post that ACV helps to block some starch digestion whenever you eat. Since less starch (and less calories, essentially) are being digested by the body, the spike in blood sugar is lessened. Adding to this benefit is that the good-for-you bacteria in your gut happily feeds on this undigested starch, which can lead to less bloating and a healthier digestive system. If you drink ACV without food, there won't be anything for it to work off of, which probably defeats the whole purpose of drinking vinegar in the first place.
