Hangover Helpline: What to Do When You've Had Too Much

No one ever wants to drink too much, but sometimes festivities happen. Keep this guide handy for preventing and dealing with the horrible hangover.

Preventing a Hangover

Know this: if you're going to go out and toss back more than a few drinks, you're going to pay the price; the body isn't designed to binge on bad stuff and feel great the next day. But before you even get to the worst-case scenario, there are a few things that can help you prevent a hangover altogether - or at least make it a bit more manageable.

  • Don't drink, or at least drink less: Instead of giving yourself unlimited access to the champagne bar, limit yourself to one or two cocktails. Drink slowly, and as a rule, don't consume more than one drink per hour, which helps give the body time to metabolize the alcohol. Also, one drink does not mean a Long Island Tea. We're talking a beer, a glass of wine, or roughly one ounce of hard liquor.
  • Drink water, and lots of it: Since alcohol dehydrates the body, begin and end your night of drinking with plenty of water, and for every alcoholic beverage you consume, match it with another glass of water. An easy trick is to alternate between a cocktail and a glass - or two! - of water while you are out for the night.
  • Don't drink on an empty stomach: Having food in your stomach helps dilute the concentration of alcohol in your belly. Fill up on good-for-you foods with an emphasis on complex carbs.
  • Be choosy with what you drink: Whenever possible, stay away from sugary and carbonated drinks, since they speed up the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream, and opt for choices that have a low alcohol content, like sake, soju, or low-cal vodka. Drink clear liquors over colored ones: darker alcohol like bourbon or red wine contain more congeners, a substance that help contribute to hangovers.

Too Late! What to Eat Once a Hangover Hits

If the old adage everything in moderation was tossed out the window, next-day food choices can be your saving grace. Even if a greasy breakfast sandwich is the only thing you're craving, make sure to eat; food helps break down the alcohol in your system. Once you've eaten, ward off a headache with some OTC ibuprofen (avoid pain relievers containing acetaminophen, like Tylenol, because they may cause liver damage), and don't skip that cup of coffee; aside from being a little pick-me-up, it's been shown to help ward off a hangover-induced headache. If you had a few drinks too many and are suffering from specific symptoms, here's which foods to reach for.

  • Dehydration: You need to hydrate. Your throat and mouth are dry due to dehydration, which is caused by the diuretic properties of alcohol. Dehydration also affects your muscles, making them feel weak. Drink plenty of water, and replace lost electrolytes with a low-sugar electrolyte-replacement drink or coconut water.
  • Upset stomach: Excessive alcohol irritates the lining of the stomach, causing nausea, digestive issues, or, in really bad cases, vomiting. Start with some Alka Seltzer, and eat bland and easily digested foods like bananas, saltine crackers, or broth.
  • Irritability and fatigue: Because the liver gets backed up trying to metabolize the alcohol, you might be experiencing low blood sugar, which can result in you feeling irritable and moody. While most any food can help spike up sugar levels in the body, in small studies, fructose has been shown to speed up the body's ability to metabolize alcohol. Give yourself a tall glass of orange juice after a night of drinking, or press your hangover away with this fresh juice recipe.

The Best Exercise Remedies

Before you hit up that hour-long indoor cycling class, you may want to think twice. On its own, exercise is not an effective cure against a hangover, said Ruth C. Engs, RN, Ed.D., a professor at Indiana University who has done extensive research on the effects of drinking. While the endorphin rush can counteract the pain (albeit momentarily), the dehydration that comes along with an intense exercise session can worsen symptoms. Take into account how bad you're feeling, and if you can't bear to miss a workout, then opt for a light cardio session or restorative yoga class. But what your body probably needs right now is rest.

Alcohol does a number on sleep patterns; the pituitary gland becomes confused and releases the wrong amount of hormones that regulate sleep; the central nervous system also becomes overexcited, causing sensitivity to light, sound, and touch. All of the above means you do not get a good night of quality sleep. If your hangover is really bad, don't feel guilty for taking the day off to relax and get some shut-eye.

21 Things Dads Do Better Than Moms

It's just the truth. There are so many reasons men make great daddies, so let's celebrate the things - let's face it - that dads just do better.

6- and 7-Year-Olds Couldn't Solve This Math Test Question, and We're Not Surprised

The internet is having a field day figuring out what the real answer is to a simple math problem. A Twitter user named Louise Bloxham shared a math problem from a Year 2 (equivalent to the first grade in the US) workbook. The tweet and account are now gone but the problem asked, "There were some people on a train. 19 people get off the train at the first stop. 17 people get on the train. Now there are 63 people on the train. How many people were on the train to begin with?"

If you try solving it yourself, you'll probably get this setup: X - 19 + 17 = 63. All you have to do is solve for x, which gives you 65 as the answer:

But if you look further into the comments, users start arguing that the answer is 46, not 65.

Other commentators became philosophical and said that the math problem fails to factor in the train driver and inspector:

The situation apparently became too much for one person, who said that everyone was "looking at it algebraically for proof purposes," when it was really just a simple equation.

Although the math question has stumped some parents and young children, the main concern here is not whether or not it can be solved, but if 6- and 7-year-olds should've been asked it. That answer to that question is simple: if there's this much debate about it with adults, then it's not suitable for children.

These Are the Best Celebrity Makeup Looks of 2016

This year was eclectic when it came to makeup looks. 40+ Marvelous Make-Ahead Super Bowl Recipes

Whether you're hosting or attending to a potluck Super Bowl party this year, having a make-ahead recipe or two up your sleeve is a must. Sure, it might not be the big game without some of the day-of treats, like baked spinach-artichoke dip or buffalo chicken wings, but it makes all the difference if most of the menu can be ready to go when the game starts. (That is, unless you aren't parcticularly into the game and enjoy hiding away in the kitchen for much of it.) These 42 recipes fit the bill; many can be made ahead in their entirety and served at room temperature, while others need only a finishing touch or to be reheated at party time. Nearly all are delightfully decadent.

What Do the Royals Do For New Year's Eve?

We all know that a royal Christmas is made up of church services, black-die dinners, and gag gifts, but when the formalities and traditions are over, how do the various members of the family choose to ring in the New Year? Some of them are on a plane faster than you can say "passports, please," winging their way to various corners of the globe, while others opt for ultraexclusive house parties and even the wilds . . .

27 Images That Prove Kids Have the Dirtiest Minds Ever

Children are dirty, y'all. And I'm not even talking about how they eat, play, or just simply live their lives. Nope, their little minds are also so, so dirty - albeit totally unintentionally dirty. There's no better example than when your child proudly brings home a drawing or homework assignment laden with giant phallic-looking rockets or the word "Fart" written instead of favorite, and you struggle to stifle your laughter. And perhaps I'm the one with the dirty mind here, but here's proof at how hilariously filthy kids can really be.

10 Ways to Have More Gorgeous Skin in 2017

I always had an inkling that my skin is sensitive, but I didn't know until I knew. It started two years ago with a rash on my neck, caused by an allergy to nickel. Trust me: when you're wearing scarves in the middle of August to conceal a breakout, you can't be in denial.

As time progressed, my skin continue to flare up. Until one day, when I was red, dry, and itchy from my forehead to my shoulders, I decided it was time to take control of the situation. First: admit to myself I have very sensitive epidermis; then, revamp my skin care routine.

So, I embarked on a journey, meeting with dermatologists to detect my metal allergy and also discover my rosacea. This is a skin condition that appears in the form of redness and bumps, often caused by products, alcohol, heat, stress, and other triggers. Saying goodbye to some of my favorite cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup wasn't easy. Letting go of the jewelry was heartbreaking. But it made room for me to bring in new products that agreed with my skin and nickel-free baubles that would keep me rash-free.

There are a slew of gentle products from drugstore by brands like Cetaphil and Simple. And I love my organic labels, such as Tata Harper and Eminence. But there seemed to be a lack in the luxury market when it came to more minimal skin care. That's why it was pretty groundbreaking in October when Chanel announced the launch of its new moisturizer, La Solution 10 de Chanel Sensitive Skin Cream.

Chanel teamed up with top NYC dermatologist Dr. Amy Wechsler to create an alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and oil-free face lotion that contains only 10 ingredients. They are all listed on the bottle: water, vegetable squalane, soft powder, glycerin, silver needle tea extract (an antioxidant star of the lineup), shea butter extract, emollient, emulsifier, humectant, and preservative. The white cream comes out of the chic bottle as a butter but blends to feel as light as a serum. It's soothing and lovely - and I can't get enough of it!

After using it for months (we editors get a sneak peek of these top launches before they hits consumers), I had to meet the woman behind this genius product. So I booked a session with Dr. Wechsler at her NYC office. After, we sat and drank tea (fittingly), discussing the biggest mistakes people with sensitive skin often make. Whether you already have easily irritated epidermis or just want to take better care of yourself, keep reading to learn how to revamp your daily routine.

These Stars Gave "Free the Nipple" a Whole New Meaning in 2016 - and That's a Good Thing

This year was less about "freeing" the nipple and more about just showing one if you wanted to. While stars like Miley Cyrus and Ireland Baldwin pushed for the cause in 2015, stripping down to promote the acceptance of nudity on social media, this year we saw a new direction. Women who have always felt comfortable in their bodies (think Kim Kardashian, Emily Ratajkowski, and Kendall Jenner) addressed their general willingness to flash skin. "We are more than just our bodies, but that doesn't mean we have to be shamed for them or our sexuality," Emily wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner penned a blog post on her site about why it's not a "big deal" that she ditches a bra to show off her nipple ring. Others, like Serena Williams and Gigi Hadid, sparked a bit of controversy after accidental nip slips at Wimbledon and on the runway, respectively. Even so, they came out confident and strong, brushing off the incidents like they were NBD. Read on for a list of ladies who said, "So what? You saw my nipple," in 2016.

Experts Agree This Is the Best Breakfast For Weight Loss

If you're looking to lose weight, it's time to skip the cold cereal and start enjoying a comforting bowl of oatmeal in the morning.

It's backed by science: A small study found that those who ate oatmeal daily for six weeks had a greater decrease in cholesterol levels and waist size than those who ate the same amount of carbs in noodles over the same time period. It's proof that you can have your carbs and eat them, too!

It keeps you satisfied: There's no need to reach for an unhealthy convenience snack in the morning when you've got oatmeal on your side; it offers the calories and fiber you need to stay satisfied all morning long. Unlike sugary breakfast cereals full of refined carbs, the body digests oatmeal at a slower pace, keeping blood sugar levels steady, energy up, and hunger away.

It helps you time carbs right: When it comes to weight loss, celebrity trainers Bob Harper and Gunnar Peterson agree: you should eat carbs for breakfast. According to Manhattan-based nutritionist and registered dietitian Shira Lenchewski, "[carbs] are burned more efficiently in the morning than at night," so they don't go unused and get stored as fat in the body. Shira also recommends that the largest meal (higher in carbohydrates) be breakfast.

It's quick to come together: Rolled oats take well under 10 minutes from prep to bowl. It might be a little more time than that instant packet you're used too, but these varieties don't come with any added sugars often found in those flavored packets. Or there's always the option to go with overnight oats that require just a little prep the night before and are ready to eat from the fridge the next morning.

The possibilities are endless: This warming breakfast should never feel boring or blah. Liven up your oatmeal bowl with these healthy combinations that keep your meal feeling fresh, filling, and satisfying to your taste buds, too.

These Portraits of People After 1, 2, and 3 Drinks Will Be the Best Thing You Witness Today

Every photo tells a story and for Marcos Alberti's project "3 Glasses Later," it's how people reacted in front of the camera after drinking three glasses of wine.

"There is a saying about wine that I really like and it's something like this," he said. "'The first glass of wine is all about the food, the second glass is about love, and the third glass is about mayhem.' I really wanted to see it for myself if that affirmation was in fact true."

Marcos kicked off the photo series by inviting his friends over to drink and mingle after a long work day. The photographer would snap an initial photo of his sober guests, followed by a photo after every drink.

"Nothing fancy, a face and a wall, 3 times," he said.

Through this amazing idea, Marcos was able to create stunning portraits of each of his guests in their different stages of alcohol consumption. Almost everyone had the same expressions in their first photos, but you can really see each person's joie de vivre by their second or third drink. These snaps will remind you that sometimes you just have to slow down, have a glass of wine (or two), and surround yourself with good company. Read on to see all of his work in the series, then pop open your own bottle of wine.

You'll Want to Actually DIY This Stunning Holiday Makeup Tutorial ASAP

Prince George and Princess Charlotte's Best Pictures From 2016

Prince George and Princess Charlotte are growing up right before our eyes. Just in this year alone, the two have already had some pretty big milestones. Not only did George attend his first day of preschool, but Charlotte also celebrated her first birthday and embarked on her first royal tour. As the royal family continues to release more and more pictures of the siblings, we decided to put all of their best moments from 2016 in one easy place. If that's not enough cuteness for you, be sure to check out Kate Middleton's sweetest mom moments and Prince William's best outings with his kids.

How to Build a Home That Boosts Self-Esteem

They say charity begins at home, but so do a slew of other qualities: compassion, chivalry, and, most importantly, confidence. Between bullies and the overly critical media, kids seem to have lower self-esteem than ever before. And while we can't control what happens in school or what's written in magazines (though we wish we could), we do have control over one aspect of our children's lives: their home. By making a few changes, you can create a safe space that boosts your children's self-esteem and (hopefully) teaches them to help others who may be a bit down on themselves.

Todd Fisher Says Mom Debbie Reynolds "Didn't Die of a Broken Heart"

Todd Fisher Speaks on the Death of Mother, Sister

TONIGHT ON ABC 20/20: Todd Fisher on the death of his mother Debbie Reynolds a day after his sister Carrie Fisher passed away: "She then said that she really wanted to be with Carrie in those precise words....and within 30 minutes she technically was gone." http://abcn.ws/2iyEOzQ

Posted by ABC News on Friday, December 30, 2016

Todd Fisher is currently dealing with the heartbreak of losing his sister, Carrie Fisher, and mom, Debbie Reynolds, within one day of each other earlier this week. While celebrities, former costars, and fans have been offering their support in a number of ways, Todd opened up about how he's coping in an interview with 20/20 on Friday. Todd, who also recently shared a beautiful drawing of Carrie and Debbie reuniting in Heaven, talked with Elizabeth Vargas about the legacy the two women leave behind. See his most beautiful and heartbreaking quotes below.

  • "From the family's perspective, this is Debbie's destiny. She didn't want to leave Carrie and did not want to her to be alone. My mother had said, 'I don't want to attend my daughter's funeral.' [While planning Carrie's funeral], she said she wanted to be with Carrie."
  • "[Debbie] didn't die of a broken heart. She just left to be with Carrie...Carrie was a force of nature in her own right, you know. It took another force of nature to bridle and work with that and she was great with her."
  • "It wasn't that [Debbie] was sitting around inconsolable - not at all. She simply said that she didn't get to see Carrie come back from London. She expressed how much she loved my sister. She then said she really wanted to be with Carrie. In those precise words, and within 15 minutes from that conversation, she faded out. Within 30 minutes, she technically was gone. She started to have a stroke, and she just effectively went to sleep and didn't wake up. She closed her eyes, peacefully like you're going to sleep, and she literally went to sleep and left. My mother, if anybody, had somehow a way to do that, and I watched it happen in front of my face. I was on her bed with her, and I watched her leave and go to Carrie. God said, 'Get up here, and give us a hand.'"
  • Todd said that Carrie "was at the top of her game" earlier this month while promoting her new projects, including her new memoir, The Princess Diarist, in England. "She was excited about Christmas. Her favorite thing to do was give out gifts. She always had the most amazing things for everybody."
  • "We thought we might be able to save [Carrie] - that was in play for a little while. [It was] not a sure thing, by any means, but [Debbie] felt she had already left the building, so to speak."
  • Todd revealed that the mother and daughter will be laid to rest next to each other. "It's horrible, it's beautiful, it's magical. They're together."

Dog Reunites With Her Owner After 2 Years and Has the Most Adorable Reaction Ever

After living and working in Slovenia for two years, Rebecca Ehalt returned home to Pennsylvania in July 2014 and shared a touching video of her reunion with the family dog. In the clip, Rebecca is greeted by the schnauzer - named Casey - who lets out a lot of high-pitched whimpers before passing out, as Rebecca describes it, "from overwhelming joy." 13 Reasons You Need to Give Your Child a Sibling

While growing up an only child definitely had its perks - think undivided attention, the entire back seat during car trips, forced independence and maturity, and strong imagination development - I always felt like there was something missing, and I still do today.

Growing up, I listened as my close circle of girlfriends - all of whom have older brothers three years our senior - would complain about fighting with their brother over something like having to sit in the undesirable seat in the car (the one behind Dad with less leg room) or that they got pummeled to the floor over whose turn it was to play with the one Game Boy in the house (another perk: I had my own; it was see-through purple and amazing) - and it would make me jealous that they even had someone to fight with.

The times I really felt the jealousy, though, were when I'd be over at one of their houses, and I'd see the tender moments between siblings. How fun it was for them to always have someone to play with and bounce ideas off of. I spent Summer afternoons at the pool with my cousins, praying that someone would mistake us all for siblings so that I could feel part of something, and I would write stories in my head about the most amazing big brother or the cutest little sister and all of our adventures together.

Needless to say, the cons well outweighed the pros for me when it came to being an only child, and these 13 things are just a few of the reasons.

  1. There was no one to ever blame anything I did wrong on, like forgetting to unload the dishwasher or letting my markers leak through white paper into the wood table (sorry, Mom).
  2. I had no one who would truly understand to complain to about my parents. Yeah, all parents are alike, but I wanted to talk about my parents with someone else who shared them with me - our parents.
  3. An older sibling would have carved a path in life that I could have either emulated or learned from.
  4. A sibling's friends would mean new friends for me, and who doesn't like new friends?
  5. Even when I could finally get an adult to agree to play with me, their imagination was the worst. I needed a little mind like mine to dream up magic worlds and new games with.
  6. There would never have been a dull moment in the house. You can only pretend your stuffed animals are alive and talking to you for so long.
  7. A brother would have been a protector, someone to give me insight into the other half of the world, someone to beat up all of my ex-boyfriends.
  8. A sister would have been a partner in crime, someone to share clothes with (and fight about said clothes with), to talk about boys late at night with when we thought our parents weren't listening (they would have been).
  9. I think I would be a much more patient person if I had to deal with sharing and fighting with a sibling. Alas, I am kind of impatient.
  10. Some of the pressure to be successful and intelligent would have been shaved off the surface and shared with others, which would have made things go a little smoother for me on report-card day.
  11. I constantly make fun of the characters that are my parents, and let's just say my comments and sarcasm don't always go over so well. It would have been nice to call in for backup once in a while.
  12. When the unthinkable happens and I need to say goodbye to my parents, I will carry the burden and sadness on my own.
  13. Friends come and go, but a sibling is tied to you forever - they have to put up with your crap; it's part of the deal.

I think a part of me will always long for the versions of siblings I've created in my head, people who look and act a little like me. I have grown to accept that the closest I might ever get to being called someone's sister is if my future husband has a sibling, but it makes me truly sad to know that I'll never have the real thing. A sibling is like a built-in best friend, so if you have one, tell them what they mean to you, because maybe not everyone would agree with me, but I think you were given one of life's greatest gifts.

10 Things to Know About Daily Photo Challenges Before Making It Your 2017 Resolution, According to 1 Experienced Mom

Being friends with Stephanie Doggett on social media pretty much guarantees you one thing: seeing daily snapshots revealing what life is like for her family of five.

As the mother of three boys 6 years old and under, Stephanie has found a way to cherish both the big and small moments among the chaos while also sharing these milestones with loved ones. Before the start of 2015, a blogger inspired this mom from Maryland to take part in a daily photo challenge. Determined to see it through, Stephanie spent the following 365 days posting one snapshot a day, with the same personal hashtag - #thedailydogg2015 - as well as the day number, to track her year's events.

Although this project definitely added some stress on occasion, it also forced Stephanie to take a moment each day to recognize a silly, playful, or profound moment and add it to a now cherished collection. From mom moments like marking when she was able to sneak away to get her hair done to heart-melting sibling embraces, each post now has meaning. "I have pictures of so many milestones, but most importantly just the average day of cuddles or basement soccer goal celebrations or the last time I got my hair highlighted," Stephanie told POPSUGAR. "It's basically become my kids' baby books."

After a full year, Stephanie decided to do it again for 2016 and her husband, Michael, has enjoyed being able to see how much the three boys have changed thanks to his wife's diligent photography. As her second year comes to an end, Stephanie is planning to turn each yearly photo collection into a Chat Books poster for the family's new home and will be keeping up the challenge for at least one more year. However, before new parents take on this photo resolution, here are 10 things to know courtesy of this experienced photo-challenge mama.

This Fiery Makeup Trend Gives a Whole New Meaning to the Term "Red Eye"

The one color we bet you avoid when it comes to eye makeup is red. The fiery shade, usually associated with bloodshot eyes, is actually one of the most gorgeous shades you can wear this holiday season. After the success of Fall's "pink eye" makeup trend, we're calling it: red eyes will be the hottest look for the 2016 holiday season.

"The look is a unique blend of elegant and edgy," Kelli J. Bartlett, director of makeup artistry at Glamsquad, told POPSUGAR via email. "It's a perfect way to add an extrafestive or flirty flair to an otherwise chic and sophisticated barely there beauty look. It's important to let other features find balance by sticking to neutrals on the lips (nudes look great!) and adding a touch of the red you used on your eyes to your cheeks to coordinate the look without appearing too dramatic."

If you're not ready to do a full ruby eye, try a smudge of brick liner (just on the bottom) with brown and mauve eye shadow. We like Chanel Le Crayon Yeux in Cocorange ($29) or Brun-Cuivre ($30). However, make sure to use it outside of the lashes. "Avoid using red eyeliner on the inner tear duct of the eye," Bartlett said. "It can cause the eye to look irritated and bloodshot."

Bartlett also advises to pop your favorite blush color on your eye. "Use a small, fluffy blending brush and swish back and forth in the eye socket," she noted. "You can further test the trend by dabbing some of your favorite red lipstick (not the liquid matte kind, though) on your finger and swiping it back and forth on your eyelid. Use your finger to buff the color into the brow bone. Proceed with caution: some reds have a tendency to stain! Try swatching on the back of your hand first to test its stain potential."

And for those of you who are brave and bold, she has tips, too! "For a fully saturated red stare, the key is to be sure to blend it with warm earth tones," Bartlett explained. "Apply the red shadow on the lid and close to the lashline on the top and bottom and use a small, fluffy blending brush to bring a warm brown color into the crease. The result is a subtle yet statement and chic red eye." Go all out with a mega palette, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Palette ($42).

Bartlett also weighed in on who the trend works best on. "Red shadow is especially flattering on green and blue eyes because they are complementary on the color wheel," she said.

If You Prefer Emily Ratajkowski's Bikinis, You Obviously Haven't Seen Her Baywatch Suit

Don't get us wrong, Emily Ratajkowski looks good in a two-piece. In fact, the supermodel's come up with so many ideas for mixing and matching her bikinis, we can barely keep up. But while vacationing with her friends Bella Hadid, Elsa Hosk, Hannah Ferguson, Lais Ribeiro, Hailey Baldwin, and Rose Bertram in the Bahamas, Emily pulled a style switch-up.

Her red Solid & Striped design was fitted and sleek, with not a cutout in sight, and the plunging neckline was a touch sexy - very simple, very effortless, very Baywatch. Emily completed her look with a dainty chain necklace, allowing us full focus on her one-piece. While clearly, most of her pals prefer classic tops and bottoms, Emily is making a case for coverage at the beach. Read on for a look, then shop similar silhouettes for yourself.

6 New Year's Eve Superstitions That Will Increase Your Chances For Travel in 2017

The guidebook for celebrating New Year's Eve with your family has already been written, and it includes every single superstition and tradition that Latinos hold to be true. While the old wives' tales can span from eating 12 grapes for luck to wearing the perfect color of underwear for love to starting the year on your literal right foot, if what you want is to be on planes, trains, and automobiles next year, there are only a few things you must have in your list. Have a little faith and follow our plan ahead.

1. Run around the block with a packed suitcase.

If you've ever spent New Year's Eve in a Latin American country, you know you can see more than a few people carrying a suitcase around the block when midnight comes. It's worth it since people swear it will ensure lots of travel in the new year!

2. Pack your suitcase right.

You can just throw stuff in the suitcase; you have to pack with a destination in mind. If you're looking to spend most of 2017 on the beach, then don't pack sweaters is all we're saying.

3. Run seven times around the house, fast.

If you don't want to walk around the block - you know, trying to avoid your neighbors thinking you have lost it - running around your room (or home) seven times is said to bring luck with travel, too.

4. Write it down.

Making a New Year's wish list and including your travel plans for the year is as great as sending a letter to Santa on Christmas - it helps you commit and visualize your wishes coming true. Put travel at the top of your list and you'll be good to go.

5. Grab a chair, an umbrella, and a suitcase.

New Year's Eve is the one time that having an open suitcase inside the house is actually considered good luck. The old superstition goes that if you stand on a chair with an umbrella open and one hand on a suitcase, you'll increase your chances of traveling over the next year. It might look weird, but it's worth a try!

6. Go in and out of the door, then repeat.

Grab your suitcase and walk in and out the front door of your home - this symbolizes the number of times you want to travel throughout the year, so give yourself at least a few minutes.

13 New Year's Resolutions, According to Your Toddler

When it comes to making New Year's resolutions, people typically think about the behaviors and habits they want to change and adopt in the fresh year, but if a toddler were to make resolutions, the saying wouldn't exactly go, "New year, new toddler." As they're basically their own species of human who can't seem to ever behave or keep any part of their lives consistent for more than a few days, it would be near impossible for them to turn over a new leaf in the New Year.

If you have a toddler in your home, read through for the 13 New Year's resolutions they will likely be making this year.

  1. I will not throw tantrums in public. Unless you forget to pack the snack I want, don't buy me a toy, look at me the wrong way, or tell me I'm being good.
  2. I will not prolong my bedtime routine. Except for when I don't want to take a bath, decide I need three glasses of water, and just don't want to go to bed yet.
  3. I will not refuse the food you make me. Unless it isn't macaroni and cheese or chicken nuggets, or is a plate of either of those two that I don't like the look of.
  4. I will not argue with you over what to wear to preschool. Unless you tell me I can't go to school in my underwear, rain boots, and a superhero cape.
  5. I will not complain when you tell me a play date is over. Until you mention something about me getting my shoes on to go, then I'll lose my sh*t.
  6. I will not throw anything on the floor during mealtimes. Except when you give me the green cup when I asked for the green cup but changed my mind.
  7. I will not run around the house naked. Unless you tell me not to, then I honestly have to.
  8. I will not use my art supplies on furniture, tables, or walls. Unless the urge to make art on anything but paper takes over my soul, then I can't make any promises.
  9. I will not make in-app purchases on the iPad. Except for when you forget to disable them and I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing because I'm 3 years old.
  10. I will not argue when you tell me screen time is over. Unless I'm watching mystery egg videos on YouTube, or those weird ones where toys are hidden inside Play-Doh.
  11. I will not wake up screaming your name in the middle of the night. Unless I wake up in the middle of the night.
  12. I will not prolong this potty training thing any longer. Unless you decide that a pee pee or poo poo isn't worth a few M&M's anymore, then I'm over it.
  13. I will not refuse to share with my parents, siblings, or friends. Except for when they ask to play with my toys or any of their toys that are mine.
