10 Things You Probably Don't Know About Gilmore Girls Star Alexis Bledel
Alexis Bledel first captured all of our hearts as the bookish, whip-smart Rory on Gilmore Girls, and she's been enchanting us ever since with roles in Mad Men and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, as well as making sweet red carpet appearances with husband Vincent Kartheiser. With the Gilmore Girls reboot fresh in our minds, and the possibility of another Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie on the way, there's no better time to get to know the actress.
- She's Latina. Much like Cameron Diaz and Bella Thorne, Alexis is another Latina actress whose pale complexion confuses people sometimes. "Most people think I'm Irish," the Argentinean star told Latina Magazine in 2005. "It's the only culture my mom knows from life, and my father as well, and they made the decision to raise their children within the context they had been raised in, so we speak Spanish in my parents' house, and my mom cooks amazing Mexican food."
- English wasn't her first language. Due to her Argentinian roots, Alexis - who was born in Houston - spoke fluent Spanish before she learned English in school. In other words, that Gilmore Girls scene of her speaking stilted Spanish to one of Emily's maids is totally fake!
- Her first job was modeling for Seventeen magazine. While most of us were scooping ice cream or lifeguarding as teenagers, Alexis was booking modeling gigs, which eventually led to her interest in acting. Her first one happened to be in Seventeen, which she opened about in a later interview with the mag, saying, "I ended up taking senior year off because I traveled a little bit for my modeling career - Seventeen was actually my first job!" Full circle, you guys.
- She originally wanted to be an architect. Although she took acting classes as a way to overcome being shy when she was younger, the acting bug didn't hit until later on. Instead, she wanted to do something totally different. "I went through a phase where I wanted to be an architect," she told Seventeen. "Then I realized there was a lot of math involved in that so I ruled it out completely."
- Her name isn't really "Alexis." Her first name, anyway. She was actually born Kimberly Alexis Bledel before ditching her first name, a move many Hollywood stars have done as well.
Image Source: The CW - She was a film major at New York University. Although she didn't attend Rory's alma mater Yale, Alexis still has a pretty incredible college on her resume: NYU. It was while studying there that she ended up scoring the role of Rory in the first place, kickstarting her Hollywood career. "I always thought that I would work behind the camera, because it's a more comfortable place for me to be, really," she told IGN about studying film at the university. "I went to college at NYU, and I was working there as a model, and I started auditioning for some pilots around that time." As luck would have it, Gilmore Girls ended up being one of them.
- She was sick with the flu when she auditioned for Gilmore Girls. On top of that, it was her first-ever acting audition! Alexis scored the role while still enrolled at NYU, even though she couldn't stop sniffling during the network screen test. "Luckily, we had videotaped one of her early auditions," casting director Jill Anthony revealed. "We popped that in, and they saw her on camera and she just jumped off the screen, you know. Those blue eyes."
- She hates coffee. Rory Gilmore basically has a coffee IV hooked up to her arm, but Alexis can't stand the stuff. During filming, her mug was usually filled with soda, instead.
- She loves renovating houses. Apparently Alexis is a Fixer Upper fan. "I tend to renovate properties when I'm not working," she told Nylon magazine in 2015. "It's fun for me, because it's creative and I can kind of control it. My job is very out of my control a lot of the time, because I don't want to get into, like, producing movies, although we are trying to make another Sisterhood movie."
- Rory's boyfriends became Alexis's boyfriends. The onscreen chemistry between Rory and Dean (Jared Padalecki), and later Rory and Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), ended up translating off screen as well. Although plenty of people know Alexis dated Milo, casting director Mara Casey claimed she also dated Jared in an interview with Life & Style. "We did have a joke about casting all of Alexis' [real-life] boyfriends," she said. "She dated Jared and Milo. And she also dated a young New York actor named Chris Heuisler, who played a guest role. Real sweet kid."

How My Love of Animals Led Me to Become a Vegetarian
My name is Daisy Fuentes and I'm a vegetarian.
I grew up in a home with a Spanish mother and Cuban father. Until I was three, I lived in Cuba, and we later moved to Spain when I was eight. During those years, I ate Spanish and Cuban foods, which were cooked in a traditional way: usually fried, then refried if they were being served as leftovers. I didn't like to eat much of it, especially the meat or seafood based meals that were 99 percent of what my parents served. Later, we moved from Madrid to New Jersey, where I was introduced to pepperoni pizza lunches - almost every day - as well as Twinkies and milk, cheeseburgers, mac and cheese, Doritos . . . you get the point. I was a junk food junkie. My parents still tried to get me to eat "protein" or "real" food often. Vegetables were never a real option or very important.
Eventually I grew up and started modeling, traveling the world, and enjoying more sophisticated flavors. I became a foodie. I cooked and created healthier versions of my favorite recipes. I started enjoying dinner parties, great restaurants, quality organic food, and wine pairings. But vegetables were never the stars of my show.
So you can imagine how unexpected and weird it was for my family and friends when I announced that I was a vegetarian.
I'd never really known any vegetarians. I always thought the whole vegan, hippie, yogi thing was interesting - but definitely not a lifestyle for a jet-setting foodie fashionista. But I was becoming more health conscious.
I'm now passionate about plant-based diets, for two main reasons. The first is that I have been reading, researching, and watching films regarding health, fitness, and anti-aging for many years. I was particularly inspired by the documentary Forks Over Knifes, which suggested that food could be used as medicine for major diseases. I was motivated to try an organic, plant-based diet for health purposes.
There is a second reason I became a vegetarian, and that is because I am an animal lover. I've always been subliminally aware of the horrors in the meat industry. For a long time, I was not able to face the fact that my consumption had consequences. But about a year ago, the day finally came when I could not turn away any more. We have all seen the images of terrified pigs and mistreated cows on factory farms. The horrors are engraved in my mind, and I can no longer look away.

Instead of the food, I now see the animal and what it went through to get on my plate. It's a choice. And some things you just can't unsee. I haven't had a piece of meat or fish since I made the decision to become a vegetarian. I can't - and amazingly, I don't even want to.
The most fascinating part of my decision has been the reactions. People seem shocked, even offended, that I made this change. Some even become defensive, as though I suggested they're doing something wrong. Perhaps my choice reminds them of something they're trying to avoid.
Many comments and responses I hear are outright wrong. When I suggested on social media that a turkey-free Thanksgiving is something to consider, I was attacked. Users asked how I could dare ruin such a tradition. But the truth is that I don't care what anyone eats. I have made my choice - and by the way I had a lovely and festive meat-free Thanksgiving.
I am, though, often asked for my fitness, health, and beauty advice. I love sharing all the wonderful, cutting-edge secrets I've learned from the best experts in the world. I always emphasized that a plant-based diet is the most important thing. Beauty and anti-aging happens from the inside out. I believe that eating a plant-based diet is essential to long term health and wellness.
I can still go to my favorite restaurants, but my choices are different. In fact, when I had the vegetarian menu at the world-renowned French Laundry, everyone I was with wished they'd done the same once they saw and tasted my dishes. When there are no vegetarian options, politely asking if the chef could whip something up for me has always worked. And I've learned how to make delicious vegetarian meals at home.
But I do struggle with some parts of this new life. I'd like to follow a vegan diet - but I still have the occasional cheesy pizza.

Fashion is also something I'm navigating and working out. I know I won't buy a fur and I don't want to buy leather again. I still have my old leather jackets and shoes. (It's been very interesting to learn that there are not many other vegan-friendly shoe options, at all.)
I've struggled with writing this because many people in my business are so judgmental. Some talk about following a plant-based diet as if it's all or nothing. If I say I'm vegetarian but get photographed wearing a leather jacket, I know to prepare for a sh*t-storm from the "vegan police." No one wants to be called a hypocrite; I'm a work in process. I'm understanding that this doesn't have to happen all at once. I know it will happen, though.
Changing a lifetime of habits disguised as tradition takes time. I don't know if I'll ever be completely vegan, but I do know I won't eat any type of meat or fish again. I get plenty of protein, and my B12 from shots or supplements. I've checked all my stats with my doctor. I'm healthy - and I feel good.
I'm not trying to preach or convert anyone, but I encourage you to research for yourself. Try the vegetarian and plant-based diet if you'd like, whether half the time or most of time. I want to inform and inspire people to live a healthier, more compassionate life.
Just one thing: if you run into me and want to talk about diets, let's not discuss protein or why animals were put here on earth.
Also, don't ask me why I'm a vegetarian. Instead, ask yourself why you are not.

With the lightning-fast pace of technology, some products are exciting and new one year - only to become old and irrelevant the next. Twitter user ThatEricAlper recalled these blasts from the past in a thread that quickly went viral.

The tweet has garnered more than 12,000 responses so far, most of which were incredibly on point. Keep reading to see if you remember any of these memorable throwbacks. And if you understand most of these, we hate to break it to you, but you're officially an oldie.

The Ultimate Mac and Cheese Throwdown: Chrissy Teigen vs. John Legend
In the Chrissy Teigen and John Legend family, Chrissy is the master chef, except - according to John - when it comes to mac and cheese. John's famous macaroni and cheese recipe has over 600,000 shares, so you know he's doing something right, but when I came across Chrissy's own recipe in her cookbook, Cravings, I was immediately struck by the hilarious dis only she could deliver with an equal dose of sass and love:
This is MY mac and cheese, dammit. Everyone is allllllways asking, begging John to make his mac and cheese and if I may be frank here for a moment: I DON'T GET IT.
I will admit, I like it too, but I prefer a creamy, saucy mac. Mac and cheese that you give to your friends to take home in Tupperware, not sliced and wrapped in foil like a brick.
OK, so maybe I'm bitter. Every single time he makes his mac and cheese, people lose it, like he literally invented mac and cheese. Why? It's because he is a brilliant, handsome, kind, wonderful f*cking human being who is incredibly talented and famous who happens to make a good mac and cheese. It's one more talent and whoa we did not see this coming. AMAZE.
I'm sorry, John. I love you so, so much and you are absolutely perfect. My dream man. You write songs about me, love me endlessly, you clean, you help me unpack, and you are a wonderful dog father.
But my mac is better. If you want to try his, google it. These pages are expensive.
Damn. Here at POPSUGAR Food, we take macaroni and cheese very seriously, so we knew what we had to do: a Chrissy Teigen vs. John Legend mac and cheese taste test. Based on the recipes I've already tried from Chrissy (lemony arugula spaghetti cacio e pepe and chicken pot pie soup), I'm a believer in everything she says (I'm also kind of obsessed with her, so I might be a little biased), but I decided to pull for her recipe from the beginning. My editor took on the task of making John's recipe for the first time, and we brought both into the office for a blind taste test with tons of co-workers.
Meet the Contenders:
John Legend's Macaroni and Cheese
What makes it special: A huge amount of milk and cheese (psst, there are two cans of evaporated milk in here) makes this elbow mac ultrarich and cheesy. It's more of a traditional casserole-like macaroni and cheese that you can slice into squares (hence Chrissy's "brick" comment). A combination of cheddar, Monterey Jack, garlic powder, and paprika make it flavorful while letting the simplicity shine. This is like the mac and cheese you would find at a potluck that everyone would eat and really enjoy, but they wouldn't be talking about it the next week.
Chrissy's Mac and Cheese With Cheesy Garlic Breadcrumbs
What makes it special: Hellooo, cheesy garlic breadcrumbs that I am now going to make regularly and put on everything! If you're into more-classic mac and hate garlic, this might not be the recipe for you, but if you are into flavor overload and perfection, I suggest you find the nearest copy of Cravings, turn to page 90, and make this immediately. Not only is the top golden brown and crunchy, but the center is oozing with a smooth cheese sauce made of a combination of sharp cheddar, gruyère, and American cheese (trust me, I was skeptical about that last cheese, but it really works here). There's also a dash of cayenne pepper that yields just the right amount of spice. This is what you would make for a dinner party with your closest friends, and no one would leave without asking you for the recipe.
The Taste-Off
Spoiler alert: Chrissy's is the clear winner. While no one could deny that John's basic macaroni and cheese is good, it just doesn't stand a chance against Chrissy's elevated flavors and cheesy shells. Here's a sampling of some of the comments on each.
Chrissy's:
- "OMG!! Life is complete."
- "I think I levitated a little and heard the hum of an angel when I had it."
- "The texture, spice, flavor, and large shells really make this mac the winner."
- "Garlic cheese explosion - those breadcrumbs are a perfect complement. The cheese sticks in and around the shells to make a ravioli effect."
- "WTF. Everything . . . especially the garlic breadcrumbs and sharp cheddar sauce."
- "Perfection."
John's:
- "Super cheesy and rich; very traditional. Sort of wish there was more spice."
- "Standard. Very classic."
- "Typical mac and cheese you'd find at the Thanksgiving table."
- "Classic mac. Nothing special."
- "This would make an awesome side dish. I want it with some spicy fried chicken and collard greens."
- "This is pretty standard mac and cheese. Nothing too life-changing but great."
And the people have spoken. Crunchy, garlicky, cheesy perfection wins over tradition. John, you can have your Grammy awards, but Chrissy Teigen 100 percent wins the mac and cheese award.
We've decided there's only one last thing to do: combine the two. We're going to call it John and Chrissy's mac and cheese baby - baby Luna mac and cheese, if you will (stay tuned).

My Husband Dressed Me For a Week, and It Changed the Way I Dress Myself
As a woman admittedly preoccupied with fashion for as long as I can remember, surrendering a week of outfits to my husband's whims for a styling experiment sounded like torture. Let me preface this by saying that my husband, Thomas, is pretty stylish. He grew up with a fashion-savvy mother and two sisters, so he really does get fashion, or at the very least, has been exposed to great style for much of his life. Add to that that we've been together for 11 years, so he knows me and my taste.
Still, like most men he has some strong feelings about what he thinks I should be wearing and most of the time it skews a whole lot sexier than I'm comfortable with. I assumed inappropriately tight silhouettes and revealing necklines would feature prominently in the week to come, and I immediately resolved to wear a sign at the office with the disclaimer: "My husband dressed me today." Read on to see how the week evolved with my husband playing stylist.
Why Eating Jell-O Should Be Part of Every Woman's Nail Care Regimen
Though many women are obsessed with their nails, we sure put them through some major abuse. Biting, using them as tools, and peeling off our gel manicures are just a few of the horrible habits we'll admit to. Manicurists backstage at New York Fashion Week paint dozens of talons per show and only have a few minutes to make them look gorgeous. To make their jobs even more challenging, models are hopping from runway to runway. This means claws are getting cleaned, shaped, and painted, then doused with acetone polish remover before the process starts over again at the next show (resulting in some serious nail stress!). We consulted pros on the most common issues they see, how you can fix them at home, and other top tips.
Brittleness and Peeling
All three of the professionals we consulted declared brittle nails to be the number one problem seen backstage. Jin Soon Choi, seasoned NYFW manicurist and founder/owner of the Jin Soon spas and polish line, cites failure to moisturize, lack of nail maintenance, and malnutrition as sources of this issue. She recommends people with this concern "drink a lot of water" as internal dehydration could be to blame.
Celebrity manicurist Gina Edwards for KISS Products, Inc., shares that dry nail beds are also often caused by constant application of polish remover, which desiccates the nail. Michelle Saunders, celebrity manicurist for Essie, adds, "Brittle nails can be caused from not removing nail polish in due time - found on many models at Fashion Week. Be sure to remove the polish when it starts to chip and apply a good base and top coat."
White Spots
"The correct name for this nail condition is called 'leukonychia,'" reports Saunders. "This is caused from slight trauma to the nail bed." Being gentler on your hands and nails will prevent these from occurring in the future. However, there's no way to treat them once you have them. "Allow time for them to heal and grow out," says Edwards.
Breakage
This is commonly caused by lack of moisture to the nail. "Moisturize your nails with cuticle oil a few times a day," suggests Choi. However, if you take good care of your claws and they're still cracking on the edges, they may just be too long for your lifestyle. Saunders advises that those with this issue trim and shape their nails weekly.
Splitting
"Nails split because they are dehydrated or because they are paper thin," Choi says. Saunders agrees and recommends daily use of cuticle oil like the Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil ($9). Choi adds, "Take vitamins that make your nails stronger, such as biotin or fish oil, and eat plenty of dark greens." Dark green vegetables are rich in calcium, which fortifies your bones as well as your nails.
Soft Nails
"I know a hand model who swears by Jell-O for firming up soft nails," divulges Choi. "The theory is that the ingredient that makes liquid Jell-O convert to a solid (gelatin!) imparts the same firming effect on your nails." She confesses that she's not sure if this sweet-treat trick is scientifically accurate, but she also recommends using a nail strengthener with keratin and protein. We like Jin Soon Power Coat ($18), which, in addition to keratin, biotin, and calcium, contains diamond particles to harden your manicure.
Painful Hangnails
"Hangnails occur when you use your hands a lot," says Saunders. "Never ever pick, pull, or bite your hangnails." Edwards recommends preventing this issue by keeping nails hydrated with coconut or jojoba oil. If you want to remove them yourself, Choi offers a solution for removal: "Soak them and snip only the hangnails when they are soft, then moisturize them afterward."
Mistakes to Avoid
As attractive as they may be, Choi advises that you pass on trying out acrylics. "They can destroy healthy nails, and once that happens, it's difficult to get them back," she says. Additionally, if you've ever bit off the skin around your nails (we're guilty!), Edwards begs you to stop. "Not only is it unsanitary, but it can lead to a nail infection if the skin is irritated and open."
Tips to Follow
Saunders wholeheartedly recommends keeping a soft file, base coat, cuticle oil, quick-dry top coat, and hand cream nearby on a daily basis. After all, if you have access to the proper tools, you'll use them . . . instead of your teeth. Adds Choi, "Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize - technically that's three, but I can't stress it enough!"
This Turkish Bride's Wedding Dress Looks Like a Work of Art Just Sitting on the Hanger
Of course Turkish bride Busra Yavuz looked lovely in her Elie Saab Couture wedding gown. The intricate piece fit her like a glove, shimmering with intricately embroidered sequins down the sleeves and spanning out into a dramatic floor-sweeping skirt. When she took the dance floor at her reception (which took place at Ciragan Palace in Istanbul), she looked as if she was gliding through a Winter wonderland - a train as white as snow might have that effect.
But before Busra slipped into her bridal look, her dress hung from the ceiling in a candle-lit room, making for one of the most gorgeous wedding-day shots we've ever seen. The photo is so mesmerizing and Pinterest-worthy, you might dream about it tonight. But accompanied by a bird's-eye view of Busra showing off her design at the party, it's confirmed: the bride truly does brings her gown to life. Read on to see.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Macaroni and Cheese
Ah, macaroni and cheese - one of the world's most beloved comfort foods. At its most basic, it's pretty standard: macaroni plus cheese sauce. But like most classic dishes, many chefs have entirely different methods of making it, whether it's a secret ingredient in the sauce, a combination of unexpected cheeses, or the addition of a crunchy breadcrumb topping. We guarantee these chef-approved tips will inspire you to go beyond Kraft-style stovetop mac 'n' cheese the next time you make it from scratch (not that there's anything wrong with that). Here's how some of our favorite celebrity chefs make their mac.
Alton Brown: Add an Egg
No, not like a fried egg on top. Alton's mac and cheese recipe calls for one egg that gets whisked into the warm butter-flour-milk mixture, which helps to create a custardy texture. Be sure to read the recipe carefully, though. Alton elaborates on the incorporation of the egg, saying, "This common maneuver called 'tempering' prevents curdling of the egg by slowly increasing their temperature. Skip this and you'll be making scrambled eggs."
Giada De Laurentiis: Egg Noodles and Mozzarella
Obviously Giada's mac and cheese has an Italian spin. There's no cheddar in sight - instead, her recipe calls for a combination of mozzarella, parmesan, and fontina to create an ultrarich cheese sauce before the mac is baked into bubbly perfection. The cheese isn't the only difference, though. She swaps traditional elbow macaroni for wide egg noodles and adds diced ham for an added flavor dimension.
Chrissy Teigen: Cheesy Garlic Breadcrumbs
You've probably heard of John Legend's famous mac and cheese recipe, but Chrissy Teigen wants you to know hers is better, dammit. You won't find a link to this recipe online, but in Chrissy's cookbook, Cravings, you'll find it on page 90 with a sassy explanation about why hers is the winner: "This is MY mac and cheese, dammit. Everyone is alllllways asking, begging John to make his mac and cheese and if I may be frank here for a moment: I DON'T GET IT." One look at Chrissy's creamy and crunchy baked mac topped with cheesy garlic breadcrumbs, and I'm a believer.
The Pioneer Woman: Spices and More Spices
The Pioneer Woman is queen of comforting recipes, and her mac and cheese is no exception. While it's a pretty standard recipe overall, the chef's smart use of spices turns up the flavor several notches - she adds ground mustard, paprika, thyme, and cayenne pepper for a bit of a kick.
Mario Batali: Throw Some Truffles in That Sh*t
No surprise here - Mario Batali adds shaved truffles to his scrambled eggs, and he does the same thing with his decadent mac and cheese recipe. The Italian chef's elevated style of cooking is just one of many things that make Batali interesting.
Ina Garten: a Dash of Nutmeg
Ina Garten's mac and cheese recipe proves you've been missing out if you haven't tried adding nutmeg to cheesy dishes. The slightly sweet spice adds that interesting what is that quality to mac and cheese, and Ina's takes the flavor combo to new heights by adding a combination of gruyere and cheddar cheese.
