All the Drama That's Gone Down Since Mariah Carey's Disastrous New Year's Eve Performance

Thanks to Mariah Carey's iconic Christmas hit, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," the music legend is practically synonymous with the holidays. It seemed like a no-brainer, then, that she was asked to perform a slew of her biggest singles during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve in NYC on Saturday night. Unfortunately, all did not go according to plan thanks to a number of technical difficulties, which revealed Mariah was lip-syncing and led to her walking off the stage (you can watch the performance here). "Trying to be a good sport here," she told the crowd about the glitch, explaining, "We didn't have a check for this song . . . we're missing some of the vocals, but it is what it is. I'm just going to let the audience sing. We didn't have a sound check for this New Year's baby, it is what it is." Unsurprisingly, people on social media quickly went in on the singer.

It seemed like it would all blow over soon enough, but since the incident, Mariah's team and ABC have been in a savage back and forth about who is to blame for the bad vocals. It doesn't seem like the drama is going to die down anytime soon, so check out a timeline of everything that's happened below.

  1. Mariah laughs off the incident on social media. A few hours after the performance, she posted a GIF of herself shrugging on Instagram along with the caption, "Sh*t happens 😩 Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!🎉 Here's to making more headlines in 2017 😂."
  2. Her camp reportedly claims they were sabotaged. Despite her seeming to have a sense of humor about it all, TMZ reported on Jan. 1 that Mariah and her team felt she was purposefully sabotaged by execs at Dick Clark Productions to score higher ratings and that her earpieces weren't working.
  3. Mariah's manager releases a statement blaming ABC. "We told them [the stage managers] that the in-ears were not working 10 minutes before the performance," Mariah's manager, Stella Bulochnikov, told Billboard. "They then changed the battery pack, and they were still not working on the frequency four minutes before the show. We let them know again, and they just kept counting her down and reassuring her that they will work as soon as they go live, which never happened - at which point she pulled them out but could not hear the music over the crowd."

On top of accusations about the technical difficulties, Stella also decried ABC's choice to air the botched performance on the West Coast despite her request for them not to. "After the show, I called [Dick Clark Productions'] Mark Shimmel and I said, 'What the f*ck happened?' He said, 'Let me call you back,' then called me back and confirmed the in-ears were not working and asked if I would make a joint statement. I said, 'No way.' I asked him to cut the West Coast feed. He said he could not do that. I asked him why would they want to run a performance with mechanical glitches unless they just want eyeballs at any expense . . . It's not artist-friendly, especially when the artist cut her vacation short as a New Year's Eve gift to them."

  4. Dick Clark Productions denies any involvement in sabotaging the performance. "As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists," it wrote on Jan. 1. "To suggest that DCP, as producer of music shows including the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, New Year's Rockin' Eve and Academy of Country Music Awards, would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd. In very rare instances there are of course technical errors that can occur with live television, however, an initial investigation has indicated that DCP had no involvement in the challenges associated with Ms. Carey's New Year's Eve performance. We want to be clear that we have the utmost respect for Ms. Carey as an artist and acknowledge her tremendous accomplishments in the industry."
  5. Mariah thanks her fans. As accusations flew between both parties, Mariah took to Twitter to send a message to her "lambs": "I always always love seeing #Lambily members in the audience. Thank you for all your love and support. #LYM 😘❤️"
  6. DCP reportedly continues to pin the blame on Mariah. According to TMZ's sources, the singer "refused to personally do a sound check" and there was more than enough sound on stage for her to properly hear the music.
  7. Mariah's team apparently wants an apology from DCP. A source at E! News revealed that she "went through vocals and her team ran through sound" and that "all was well at rehearsal" but that "DCP knew her ear piece wasn't working and sent her on stage regardless" on Jan. 2. "It was sloppy and unprofessional on their part. Their statement says they didn't intentionally sabotage her, which [her team] agrees with. It doesn't apologize for failing to do a good job producing her performance, which is what happened. Her team knows that there are sometimes technical issues with live performances. All her manager asked DCP for was an apology for the poor job that they did producing and support of Mariah."

Fingers crossed they can come to an agreement and put this mess behind them ASAP.

Shay Mitchell Might Be Wearing a Cover-Up, but We Can See Her Bikini Right Through It

We don't only look to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell for swimsuit inspiration, but for full-on beachwear. The actress is vacationing in Tulum and sharing plenty of moody, carefree shots on her Instagram. While she struck a pose in a Flynn Skye cover-up, it was easy to make out her red string bikini through the sheer piece.

But hey, that's exactly what we like about it. After all, poolside kimonos need not completely hide your bathing suit, but rather offer a sneak peek. Read on for another glimpse at the subtly sexy (and shoppable!) design, then score your own ahead of your next tropical getaway.

Twin Boys Were Born Not Only on 2 Separate Days but Also in Different Years

It's one thing to have a hospital's first baby of the New Year, but for the Shay family, who just welcomed twins, they had that honor in addition to another fun birth-story quirk: their first twin was born right before midnight on Dec. 31. Sawyer Matthew Shay was born at 11:51 p.m. on New Year's Eve, closing out 2016 for his parents with a bang, and his younger twin brother, Everett Jackson, was born at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, making him Banner Health's first birth of 2017.

Although the Arizona fraternal twins are typical in that they're just minutes apart, both boys will have a rare story to tell when they're older about how it is that they were born not only on different days - which both happen to be holidays - but also in different years.

Prince Harry's Love For Africa Has a Bittersweet Connection to His Late Mother

Prince Harry is known for being an activist, but one project that's particularly close to his heart is his work with African Parks. The famous royal recently opened up about the nonprofit organization in the February issue of Town & Country as he worked alongside volunteers, vets, and experts in Malawi to help relocate nearly 500 elephants. Aside from looking devastatingly handsome on the front cover, he also talks about the importance of protecting wildlife and how his relationship with Africa stems from his late mother, Princess Diana. See his best quotes ahead.

Angelina Jolie Started the New Year in the Most Underrated Coat of the Season

Lest you thought Angelina Jolie had only mastered elegance in the office or on the red carpet, the actress is here to prove you wrong. She spent the holidays in Colorado with her children, and when they hit the street to grab ice cream, Angelina debuted an all-black ski look. But while her pants were puffy and her Gore-Tex coat thick, we zoomed in on the little details.

Angelina's quilted snow boots were lined with fur, matching her shearling hood to a T. And if that's not enough to ensure you she looked graceful, what about the lacy black tank that peeked out from under her layers? Though a parka is a Winter jacket some might consider typical, Angelina's smart styling makes it underrated in our book. Read on to get another look, then shop inspired coats and fashion a snow outfit like Angelina's.

Angelina Jolie Flashes a Huge Smile While Ringing in the New Year in Colorado With Her Kids

Angelina Jolie rang in the New Year with her kids by her side. The actress, who filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in September, was all smiles when she went shopping in Crested Butte, Colorado, on Tuesday. Bundled up in a dark parka and snow boots, she was spotted grabbing some sweet treats with her six children after hitting the slopes. The happy outing comes on the heels of Brad's recent visit with the kids on Christmas. After he was cleared in his child abuse investigation, he was able to see his children over the holiday weekend and exchange gifts. As the former couple continues to settle their divorce, it's nice to see Angelina staying so positive and happy.

Manny MUA and Shayla Reveal the Best and Worst Parts About Being Beauty Influencers

Being a beauty blogger with over two million social media fans sounds like the dream gig. You likely started as a makeup artist for MAC at the mall, you set up a camera in your bedroom to shoot a few tutorials, and boom, millions of girls (and boys!) started subscribing to a brand based around your personality. These devotees want to copy your looks, you get sent piles of free makeup, and major beauty brands pay you to collaborate with them. But like all celebrity, fame comes with a price. And in this case, it's often delivered in the form of internet trolls and haters. Being in the Instagram spotlight - while certainly glamorous - is not always as easy as it looks.

Two beauty stars, Manny Gutierrez (@MannyMUA733) and Shayla Mitchell (@MakeupByShayla), are living in this fabulous reality. And while they did need to hustle to get where they are today (both actually started out as MAC pros) and have to deal with ongoing negative criticism, they learned how to take on the challenges with class and style. It's just part of what makes them both so damn inspiring.

Manny is also one of the leaders of the viral men in makeup pack. He is known to test out the latest trends - be it a pink eye shadow look or edgy matte lip. And Shayla is a role model for young black women with her gorgeous natural curls and glowing skin. That said, you certainly do not need to be a dude in guy-liner or a dark-skinned beauty to be fans of their styles.

In fact, they're so popular that Maybelline New York (re: one of the most influential drugstore makeup brands on the planet!) tapped them to be the faces of a new campaign for its The Colossal Big Shot Mascara (which we are fans of and reviewed here).

"We're so excited to team up with Manny and Shayla, who are true leading influencers in the social media world, on our first ever video campaign that features influencers as the stars," Anne-Marie Nelson Bogle, senior vice president marketing for Maybelline New York, said in a press release. "The duo's boss-like personalities, in which they unapologetically slay both their makeup looks and their professional lives on a daily basis, made them a perfect fit for the role. They represented the 'boss' beauty attitude in this mascara campaign that no one else could, truly inspiring their audiences daily to be their own bosses which brings the inspiration and message of this mascara to life. We're looking forward to more exciting social influencer collaborations in the future."

Expect Manny and Shayla to front digital campaigns starting this month. In the videos (below), the duo will be showing fans how to rock #LashLikeaBoss. When we met up with them in NYC for an exclusive interview, they admitted that the commercials were the first time both have gone faux-lash-free in months. Keep reading for more about how they "made it," the classy way to deal with those aforementioned bullies, and exactly where to hold your phone to make sure your strobe pops in selfies.

The couple, who wed in an intimate ceremony in her native Australia in December, was all smiles after they touched down at LAX on Monday. Dressed in a casual sun dress and sneakers, the Suicide Squad actress looked so in love as she glanced at Tom and held his hand as they made their way through the airport. Despite never announcing an engagement, Margot confirmed their marriage when she posted a cheeky photo of herself kissing her new hubby and showing off her new ring on Instagram.

17 Books to Read Before They're 2017 Movies

As 2017 begins, we're looking forward to a fresh new year of films. And, like any other year, many of the big releases will be based on books. To start thinking about what should be on your reading list - or to see books you've already read up on the big screen - take a look at all the adaptations coming in 2017!

The Smartest Whole Foods Shoppers Take Advantage of This Hack

We reached out to a Whole Foods employee to learn insider tips, and the best secret she shared is that you can taste anything before you buy it. Seriously - there's a company-wide Try Before You Buy policy. This includes but is not limited to anything fresh from the produce section or any packaged foods within the center aisles of the store. She told POPSUGAR, "This is super handy when you head into the produce section. I've used it for things like a new apple variety - I'm very particular about apples. If there's a new apple that comes out, you can just ask someone in the produce section to cut you a slice, and then it actually turns into this fun communal thing because if you do that then other people will see it, and then you're hanging out with other customers."

You might want to brace yourself for what she told me next. "The same thing works for the cheese department, which is extra fun. If you have a specific question, you can end up tasting a bunch of cheeses to get the right one for whatever you're up to. Also, team members are completely empowered to open things on the interior shelves, too. If there's some weird cracker and you're like, 'Can this possibly be good if it's a gluten-free, seed-based cracker?' You can try it before you decide to buy it."

Cheese! Lacinato kale! Vegan white-cheddar popcorn! Not that I'm encouraging taking advantage of this tip so much that you get a free lunch made of samples from all over the store, but I'm just saying it's possible. Even frequent Whole Foods shoppers (like me) had no idea this budget-friendly policy existed. So the next time you step into your neighborhood Whole Foods Market, avoid the "Whole Foods, whole paycheck" stereotype by simply asking someone to try what you're eyeing.

Michelle Obama Left Hawaii in a Dress You'd Never Think to Wear on a Plane

When Michelle Obama jetted off to Hawaii with her family for their annual vacation, she wore a red shirtdress. The piece was vibrant and spoke to the mood of the bright occasion. While she was away, her wardrobe followed suit. She made a brief public appearance alongside Barack in a DVF colorblock wrapdress, maintaining her cheerful style.

Now, while most of us drearily opt for sweatpants on the way home, Michelle sang a different tune when she boarded Air Force One hand-in-hand with the POTUS. The pair's headed back to the White House for now, and Michelle's floral chiffon dress suggested she's feeling positive. Zoom in on her eye-catching sky blue nails for further confirmation - Michelle is wearing her optimism on her sleeve.

Read on to get an all-angles view of the FLOTUS's final vacation dress, then shop for a similar design. Whether you're going or coming, there's no doubt you'll get plenty of wear out of a lightweight fit-and-flare like this one.

Bikini-Clad Hilary Duff Enjoys a Low-Key Day at the Beach With Her Family

If we had to pick the best way to celebrate the New Year, Hilary Duff's tropical vacation would probably be at the top of our list. The Younger actress rang in 2017 in Kauai, Hawaii, with her adorable son Luca, older sister Haylie, Haylie's fiancé Matt Rossenburg, and Haylie's daughter, Ryan. On Monday, the happy family played in the sand, and after a splash in the waves, Hilary gave her 4-year-old son a piggyback ride down the beach. Although Hilary recently broke up with boyfriend Jason Walsh, she looked happy and carefree. Not a bad way to kick off January, right?

Live Somewhere Cold and Own a Gadget? You Gotta Read This

You may not realize it, but freezing temps can be just as dangerous to gadgets - if not more so - as the Summer heat. That's because there are hidden dangers you can't see. Check out these six Winter weather tips that will help ensure your gadgets see the light of Spring this year.

  • Keep them out of the trunk - Keep your laptops, cell phones, and tablets out of the trunk for extended periods during cold days to prevent damage to screens and to keep your hard drive from freezing.
  • If you must trunk it, keep it bundled up - If you absolutely must leave your gear in your car in freezing temps, wrap it up in layers - like a jacket or sweater - to keep it warm. You can also find laptop warmers (which are specifically made for laptops) to keep them from getting icy if you live in cold conditions.
  • Turn them off - Letting your laptop or tablet remain in sleep mode may keep it warmer (since it is still working), but it also increases your chances of damage if you're on the move. Be sure to power down all the way to keep your data safe.
  • Warm up before booting up - If your machine is on the cold side, let it warm up to room temps slowly before turning it on. This will prevent condensation and dew, which can ruin your computer's sensitive guts.
  • Carry a charger - Cold weather sucks the life out of your batteries, so be sure to carry extra chargers in your car for emergencies.
  • Watch out for sensitive screens - Cold weather makes a smartphone screen extra sensitive, so be sure to keep it close to your bod if you're out in the snow or consider a warm accessory - like a smartphone wallet, sock, or sleeve - to keep it cozy.

This Bride Wore a Purple, Prince-Inspired Veil and Thrifted Her Party Dress

When Frank151 editor Lily Waronker married Jonny Gordon at the Alexandria Ballrooms in LA, they got groovy about it. The couple love Prince and the movie Boogie Nights, so they sent out purple invitations and set up their reception like a disco. Of course, the dress code reflected the theme - at least for the bride, who wore a purple lace veil as an homage to the iconic singer and didn't back away from sparkle when it came to her wardrobe.

While Lily's initial gown - a Jonathan Cohen creation brought to life by the designer's partner, Sarah Leff - was made of velvet and stitched with shimmering embroidery, it was her thrifted party dress that we admired most. Lily went shopping in her hometown of LA at Paper Bag Princess, where she found a sequined halter maxi that encouraged guests to dance the night away. Scroll to see all her festive bridal looks that prove outfitting a theme can be pretty darn classy.

9 Iconic First Lady Gowns Worth Talking About

Traveling to Washington DC two days after what will surely be the most important election of my lifetime was scary. I'm not going to lie. I heard rallies outside my hotel room all night and passed angry mobs holding signs outside the Trump hotel. But during the day, while Barack Obama met with President-elect Donald Trump inside the White House, the streets were quiet.

I traveled with a small group of editors to the first ladies inaugural dress exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum, and it was only there, in that small, dimly lit room, that I could feel myself starting to relax. The first sign was a poster on the wall that featured a Q&A series: "How will the first ladies collection change when a woman is elected president?" Using the term "when," not "if," instilled hope. Then I veered off, where a short film of Michelle Obama donating her Jason Wu gown to the museum was playing.

So Much More Than a Dress

"This gown is one of the most tangible things I have left to remember that day. At the end of the day today is about much more than this gown. It's also about how with enough focus and determination someone in this room can be the next Jason Wu. Someone can be the next Barack Obama . . . Something you create today can help teach the next generation in a way that nothing else can," Michelle said at the podium.

Her dress was absolutely one of the most intricate on display, what with its Swarovski crystal embellishments and impeccably organized beading. But these dresses I was admiring, some of which dated back to the 1800s, were not made to make the first ladies feel pretty. Each one signified a new beginning.

"Inaugurations are times of optimism . . . In addition to attending ceremonies and balls, incoming first ladies announce the agendas and special projects they intend to pursue. Some projects are ambitious. Some are traditional. Some may be controversial," read a sign on the wall.

Just like the fashion choices they make. And it's true: every first lady was scrutinized for her style, even if she wasn't viewed as an icon. But it was the choices she made in that suit, the momentous speech she gave in that ballgown, that we'll remember. If a floor-sweeping dress is one way to preserve these memories, why not learn everything we can about it? Why not try to understand why Michelle wore white or Lady Bird Johnson chose a simple yellow sheath?

The Legacy, The Future

As I traveled around the exhibit, reading about each gown and the woman who wore it, I passed a very young girl staring up at a picture of Michelle and Barack Obama on Inauguration Day. "Who's that?" her mother asked her, pointing up at a glowing Michelle. "It's the president! They're both presidents!" she screamed.

The first female president will not be sworn in on Jan. 20. In fact, the Smithsonian Museum will make space for one more dress when Melania Trump accepts her role as FLOTUS. But until then, let's consider the takeaways I learned about the first ladies who stood before her.

Each of the facts ahead is proof that these strong women, from Lady Bird Johnson and Jackie Kennedy to Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, were compassionate. They thought of function first, then fashion. They embraced the spotlight, not because of what they were wearing, but because of the confidence they felt when wearing it. All of the women I learned about were leaders. They had what it takes to lead a nation, and one day, a lady as determined as them will. When you're finished reading, I think you'll agree.

This Mom Posted a Video of a Dresser Falling on Her Twin Toddlers For Good Reason

If you're a parent and you don't have your furniture mounted, this alarming video will certainly motivate you to get the job done today.

One mom posted a "nanny cam" video to YouTube showing how it took literally five seconds for her two-year-old twin toddler boys to cause their nursery room dresser to fall right on top of them. Thankfully, the boys – Bowdy and Brock – were not seriously injured, but it's a jarring reminder to all parents to take proper precautions when childproofing their homes.

"We didn't hear a cry. We didn't hear a big thud, so we just woke up, looked at the camera, then we saw that it was all the way down. They were just still playing, so we didn't know if it had landed on them," mom Kayli Shoff told Utah's 14 News.

The video showed the twins trying to climb onto the empty drawers of the low dresser, at which point it fell on top of both boys. Bowdy was able to climb out, but Brock was still trapped underneath. Bowdy attempted to lift the dresser.

"So he just pushed with all of his might, and it pushed it right off of his brother," said Shoff, admitting that she was at first hesitant to share the video. "Everybody needs to bolt down their dressers to the wall. I mean, we just didn't think about it. Accidents are going to happen, so, we just want to spread awareness to this one accident that happened and hope that it doesn't happen to any other families."

You Won't Have to Look at Shay Mitchell's Swimsuit Long to Notice This Detail

Once the temperature dips below a certain degree, we get the urge to travel - preferably to a warm, sunny location, where we can rock a swimsuit instead of a puffed-up parka. Shay Mitchell is likely feeling the same, as the star 'grammed a throwback pic of herself in a Positino, Italy, shower, showing off white shades and a stylish green one-piece. The photo made us feel a tad emotional - oh, how we miss those beach-ready days! - but we still "oohed" and "ahhed" over Shay's sexy swimwear, which included fun cutout details on the back and side.

Yet while the weather (especially on the East Coast) isn't exactly appropriate for this type of get-up, the color choice couldn't be more perfect. Considering the recent holiday season, green pieces are a definite must, and Shay's little snap is a great reminder to start scooping 'em up. Scroll through to see Shay's suit once more, then shop something inspired by it - both for vacation and not - ahead.

18 Selena Gomez Bikinigrams That Prove She's Definitely a 10

If there's one thing we love about Selena Gomez, it's that she's always game to show off her stylish swimsuits. After all, she's hot and she knows it. In fact, when the star called the TJ Show and was asked to rate her hotness on a scale from one to 10, she said, "On a good day, I would say - like a premiere day - I would be a good nine. And then, on my every day, I feel like a six. Gosh, that sounds so bad! I feel like a six or a seven."

But from the look of Selena's sun-kissed bikinigrams, for which she changes her style based on the prints, colors, and cuts of her suit, we'd say she's a definite 10 - even when she's on the beach with no makeup on. Scroll to find 18 times Selena proved she can work a swimsuit like it's nobody's business.

Why Your Face-Picking Could Be a Deeper Psychological Issue

I have a dirty little secret, and it's not a pretty one to admit as a beauty editor. Often, I find myself nuzzled up to my bathroom mirror, nails clawing at the tiny whiteheads on my face or pressing aggressively against the "lurkers," those pesky, deep pimples that form under the skin. I've even gone after ingrown hairs. Sometimes, I play a game in the elevator of my building: how quickly can I extract pus from my zit as I travel from the eighth floor to the lobby?

After these face-picking sessions, I am left with a war zone: bleeding, scabs, and eventually scars. I don't even have acne. It's not about getting clear skin, as I am often going after clogged pores too small for a casual observer to notice. When my fiancé moved in and realized what I've been doing behind closed bathroom doors, he gently pointed out that I should try to quit the habit.

So I reached out to my dermatologist, Dr. Amy Wechsler, who is board-certified in dermatology and psychiatry. She's one of the only women in the country with these dual specialties - pretty badass! She helped make sense of why we do this, what it means for us emotionally, and how to stop.

Are You a Picker?

"There are some people who are pickers," she explained. "They have something on their skin that is not typically there, so they try to pick or pop it off. Mosquito bites, scabs, pimples. Other people never touch anything on their skin. That seems to be something stable throughout someone's life - whether they are a picker or not."

Why do we do it? The short answer: "A lot of lives are relatively out of control," she said. "If there is something you can do to control your body or your life, intelligent people try to do it." She added that the habit is often linked to anxiety.

If you ask around or do a quick Google search, you'll discover how vast this issue is. POPSUGAR Beauty editor Emily Orofino admitted to me: "I'll spend hours sitting on the bathroom counter digging holes into my face. I've used tweezers and blackhead extractors to stab myself until something comes out. I don't feel successful until I am bleeding, usually. I've done some messed up things to myself to make me feel better, and I don't think it's just about skin."

"They get get into a trance, a zone where they aren't 100 percent conscious or fully aware of the world around them."

POPSUGAR intern Ashley Cooke also opened up about her chronic skin-picking issue. "I have the OCD of picking my fingers," she said. "I have never known a time when I haven't had this issue. I have crazy scars and bumps on my cuticles and a bit of nerve damage. I have to wear gloves in bed, because I do it in my sleep. And I always have Band-Aids on me as it's the only thing that keeps me from scratching at my fingers."

Pimple-popping videos, showcasing pus oozing out of infected megazits, have been going viral on the Internet for the past year. Dr. Sandra Lee (aka Dr. Pimple Popper) has over a million fans on her YouTube page. There is a mass fixation around this sensitive topic.

"I think it's pretty strange," Dr. Wechsler said of the trend. "On the other hand, it's satisfying as a doctor to drain a big pimple, because you know you're helping the person." She prefers that her clients watch these videos rather than take on the task of doing it at home. "If they're getting vicarious satisfaction watching a big pimple pop, by all means . . . if it keeps you from popping your own."

The Correlation Between Picking and Anxiety

Right after I got engaged, there was a very brief period of anxiety during which my fiancé and our families wondered: where and when will we have this wedding? It's one of the biggest decisions (besides choosing a partner) that the couple has to make. During that time, you can bet I had to use extra concealer to hide the damage I did to my face.

"When people excessively do something to their own skin, it gets them out of their head, so to speak," Dr. Wechsler said. "They get into a trance, a zone where they aren't 100 percent conscious or fully aware of the world around them. I've heard many patients say to me that they feel like they've been in the bathroom picking in a magnifying mirror for five minutes when it's been two hours."

The pattern causes people to feel dejected, and it can damage self-esteem.

Picking is a result of anxiety, and it can be a chronic, cyclical issue. "During times of anxiety and stress, they start picking more," she said. "And when the stress goes away or gets better, they stop. When the stress flares again - it could be months or weeks later - they do it again."

The pattern causes people to feel dejected, and it can damage self-esteem. "What's wrong with me?" is a common phrase Dr. Wechsler hears. "Afterwards, people feel so bad, like, 'I can't believe I did this to myself. I made my skin worse. It was healing. Now, I have anxiety plus this.'"

There are a slew of anxiety disorders linked to skin picking, including obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder. "It can also go along with depression or psychosis," she added. "Sometimes people are picking their skin because they believe bugs are in their skin, which is relatively rare. It's called delusions of parasitosis."

How to Stop Picking

Good news: this is not an incurable issue, and Dr. Wechsler has actionable suggestions. "All of these different ways have helped so many people," she said. "I want people to know that they're not alone. This is not something most people who have a picking problem share with people in their lives. So they feel very isolated."

If it is an extreme case, she will send a patient to get cognitive behavioral therapy with a psychologist. This goal-oriented form of therapy helps people work through the underlying issues and change the way they think about situations.

"All of these different ways have helped so many people. I want people to know that they're not alone."

But before you start calling your health insurance, there are at-home approaches to try. Dr. Wechsler recommends enlisting someone who you live with - a roommate, a family member, or a significant other - to make sure you're not locked in the bathroom scabbing up your skin. "The person doesn't have to be judgmental or mean," she said. "Just say to them, 'If I'm going to the bathroom, please time it and get me out. Knock on the door. This is my problem, and I need help.'"

If you live alone, put sticky notes in the bathroom - on the mirror or on the walls - with phrases like "Don't pick!" and "Keep my hands off my face!" According to Dr. Wechsler, it can jolt you out of your picking. You can also set a timer when you go into the restroom to remind yourself to get out quickly.

Dr. Wechsler also advises to throw out your magnifying mirror. "No one's skin looks great in a magnifying mirror," she said. "You see all kinds of things that aren't visible to the naked eye. A lot of pickers who have a real problem go after things you can only see with a magnifying mirror. That's so unhealthy and so bad for you. I had a patient once take a video of her throwing her magnifying mirror down the garbage shoot, which was great. She was showing me that she was doing better and taking the steps to really try to stop."

What to Do If You've Picked

So you went after a few blackheads, and now your face is a crime scene. Dr. Wechsler offers next steps: "If you're already bleeding, make sure your hands are clean. Use tissues to pat the area dry, and then apply some sort of antibiotic, topical, hydrogen peroxide, clean your skin a bit. Don't use rubbing alcohol, it stings like crazy." Pick up some Neosporin at your local drugstore, and put it on the spot.

If you absolutely have to get pus out of a zit, try this method. First, make sure your skin is soft by taking a shower, washing your face, or putting a warm compress on it. Then, says Dr. Wechsler, "take two Q-tips and apply even, gentle pressure on either side of the pimple. You cannot hurt yourself with the Q-tip. If you apply too much pressure, you will break the Q-tips. If they break, just stop." But do not start with cotton swabs and then move onto your fingers. Putting tissues over your nails isn't a solution either. "Your fingernail is strong and hard," she warned.

While breaking this habit is not easy (trust me, I know), think about what it is doing to your skin in the long term. Investing in laser treatments and expensive brightening serums to remedy scars is costly and time-consuming. And if you think you have a deeper issue, contact your doctor or a mental-health professional for help.

How to Give Up Dairy When Cheese Is Your Everything

If you're giving up dairy because you're lactose intolerant in a major way, have decided to go Paleo, want to get rid of your bloated belly or acne, or are doing it for the animals, it's not easy, especially if you consider cheese to be its own food group. With these tips, you'll be able to stop eating dairy and actually feel happy about it.

Discover Amazing Alternatives

The plant-based food world is exploding right now, so there are dairy alternatives to just about everything you could think of. Here are some recommendations:

  • Milk: Take your pick between soy, almond, coconut, cashew, and blends of each. The one that most closely resembles cow's milk is soy milk and new plant milks made with pea protein such as Ripple. These companies also make coffee creamers.
  • Butter: This is an easy one as Earth Balance and Smart Balance both make tubs and sticks of dairy-free butter you can use on toast, to bake cookies, melt on popcorn, or make frosting. I'm a fan of the ones made with olive oil.
  • Yogurt: If this is your go-to breakfast or snack, try ones made by Silk, Daiya, Kite Hill, or So Delicious.
  • Ice cream: Trader Joe's makes one of the best dairy-free ice creams I've ever tasted - try the Soy Creamy in Vanilla or Cherry Chocolate Chip. If you're avoiding soy, Ben and Jerry's makes four amazing chunk-filled ice creams made with almond milk. Some other noteworthy brands are So Delicious (amazing cashew milk ice cream), and DF Mavens.
  • Cheese: This is a toughie, as I have yet to find cheese alternatives that taste as good as the real thing. But, I've found a few brands that are pretty good. Follow Your Heart Mozzarella Shreds and Shredded Parmesan are always in my fridge for homemade pizza. For cream cheese, I'm a fan of the Trader Joe's plain version - I stir in some maple syrup and cinnamon for a sweeter flavor. For savory cream cheese that tastes great on crackers, Treeline Herb-Garlic Soft Cheese made from cashews and Kite Hill Chive Style Spread made from almond milk are outstanding. If you crave American cheese, Go Veggie is not too shabby, but for grilled cheese, my new favorite is Daiya Provolone Slices - it totally melts like you'd expect! And for a quick meal, Kite Hill Raviolis are great to keep in the freezer.
  • Condiments: Obsessed with ranch dressing? Daiya ranch dressing fooled my husband - it's that good.
  • Chocolate: Most dark chocolate is dairy-free, just double check the labels. Look for bars made by Endangered Species, Green & Black's, and Newman's Own. For baking, go for Enjoy Life or Trader Joes' Semi-Sweet chocolate chips. Craving M&Ms? Order some No Whey Choco No-No's.

Get Creative in the Kitchen

Sometimes you need to take matters into your own dairy-free hands and make the recipes you crave:

Find Something Even Better

If you have certain go-to meals like Greek yogurt for breakfast or Friday pizza night, find recipes that are even tastier. Try this chocolate coconut almond overnight oats recipes or a creamy high-protein smoothie. Cook up some chickpea coconut curry or bite into savory roasted sweet potato and black bean burritos. Discover foods you really look forward to, so you don't miss the old ones.

Avoid Temptations

Don't go to the same old places that serve your favorite non-dairy dishes. You'll just be reminded of the chocolate peanut butter pie you can't have and will either have a supersad meal or give in and order a slice. Explore new restaurants - Chinese and Mexican are good options - or try a new vegan restaurant.

Ease Into It

Ditching dairy completely and going cold turkey is a pretty daunting task. So if your health allows for it, try slowly transitioning your diet, and you might not be so depressed about it. Maybe start with one meal a day or by ditching one food like milk.

Remember Why You're Doing It

Keeping a higher purpose in mind can be all the motivation you need to stop eating dairy. If you know you'll be stuck in the bathroom for half an hour just because you put a pat of butter on your bread, then you'll probably think twice before grabbing that butter knife. If you're eating Paleo because you want to gain muscle, getting support from your swolemates (and recipe ideas) can make all the difference. And if you're doing it for health reasons or animal welfare, just keep a powerful image in your mind that will stop your hand from reaching for that piece of cheese. Be confident in your decision and know that the benefits will soon follow.

7 Truths About Your Kids and Anxiety

Anxiety is a part of everyone's life, to some degree. But for kids, it's an emotion that can be frustrating, scary, and overwhelming. "More than anything, we want our children to know that everyone experiences [anxiety]. We need to teach our kids that it's normal," child development expert Denise Daniels told us. Denise has served as an adviser on children's grief issues to both former First Lady Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is the cofounder of the National Childhood Grief Institute, and has partnered with the Yale University Center for Emotional Intelligence to develop The Moodsters, a line of toys designed to teach kids to work through emotions.

We couldn't imagine anyone more qualified to share her advice on the topic than Denise. Here, seven things every parent should know and what you can do to help your kids work through their anxieties and fears.

The Best Way to Store Greens

If your greens are wilting within a few days of bringing them home from the store, you can prevent it with this quick storage tip. First, wash the greens thoroughly in cold water. Submerge them in bowl full of cold water at least three times before spinning them dry. Then line a resealable bag or tupperware container with a paper towel. Transfer the greens, then top them with another paper towel. Seal the bag (some air inside is OK) or pop the lid on the tupperware and store in the fridge. That's it! This technique should keep them crisp and fresh for well over a week.
