Announced today, Weight Watchers has been ranked 2017's number 4 best diet overall, the number 1 best weight-loss diet, and the number 1 best fast weight-loss diet by U.S. News, and these aren't new accolades; the diet is consistently top-ranked, and backed up by research. A 2013 study found that dieters are more likely to stick with Weight Watchers (and lose weight) than they were with a treatment from a specialized weight loss clinic.

So it's been proven effective, people are losing weight and changing their lives, and experts agree that it's one of the best diets you can be on - but how does it work? Here's a breakdown of all the facets that make Weight Watchers so successful.

The Points

The points are the Hallmark of this diet. With Weight Watchers, there's less of focus on calorie counting, but a focus on points instead - this makes sense, because not all calories are created equal. You could eat 200 calories of lean chicken, or 200 calories of gummy bears - that doesn't mean they're the same nutritionally.

So instead of counting calories - which is ultimately too top-line if that's your only means of quantification - every food gets assigned a point value. They're called SmartPoints, and they're based on calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein.

It works like a "budget." And that makes sense . . . a lot of people are great at (or at least understand the concept of) budgeting their money, but can't apply that principle to their food. You'll put an item down at the store that's too much money, but you probably wouldn't think twice about a food that was super high in sugar and saturated fat.

This is how SmartPoints work, in budgeting terms (and according to the site): in terms of value, calories "set the baseline" for how much the food is "worth," while protein makes the food cheaper (fewer points, meaning it's healthier and you can have more), and saturated fat and sugar make that food more expensive.

Subscribers of the diet get personalized points based on their weight, height, gender, age, and goals. There are also allowances for bigger portions, going out to eat, and weekend "splurges," which makes for a much more realistic and sustainable meal plan.

Working in the fitness and health world (and being fully immersed in it outside of work), I've become a bit desensitized to how much things cost. When $100 for a pair of yoga pants and $8 for a serving of chia pudding is just par for the course, I wrongfully came to the conclusion that this is just the cost of being healthy.

You don't have to give up your healthy way of life to save money - you just have to be a little more strategic. I might not be eating like Moon Juice founder Amanda Chantal Bacon, but I think it's possible to get on Gwyneth Paltrow's level of healthiness without breaking the bank.

  1. Meal prep. I've said it before, but meal prep is one of the best ways to save money on healthy food. When you skip the takeout from fancy health bars, your savings can add up to hundreds per month.
  2. Start simple. The simpler you keep your recipes, the more likely you'll be to continue this money-saving practice. The artisinal foods at your favorite restaurants and markets likely don't take very long to prepare, either. Things like a five-minute chia pudding or salad, a piece of avocado toast, or a quick and easy soup are all simple, healthy options you can make with basically zero culinary skill. The more you keep it up, the more you'll be able to experiment with more complex recipes, mixing up your menu, and the cycle of savings continues.
  3. Buy in bulk. I get my quinoa, chia seeds, and coconut oil at Costco - each product comes in at under $10, and I've had my (enormous) supply for months. Some products are Kirkland Signature (the coconut oil, for instance) but others are the same brand you'd get at Whole Foods. It doesn't have to be Costco, but there are certain items you can buy in bulk at any store.
  4. Buy frozen. Frozen organic fruits and veggies are awesome for smoothies, soups, and side dishes, and give you a lot more leeway, especially if you're shopping and cooking for yourself. I also love getting frozen chicken and fish to pop in the oven - it's lean protein with a long time before the expiration date and seemingly limitless recipe opportunities.
  5. Find inexpensive superfoods. Superfoods aren't always marketed as such, and some foods that are marketed as superfoods aren't worth the extra dough. Almonds, lentils, kale, eggs, tuna, and green tea are superhealthy, supercheap foods you can get at virtually any market. Although there are some superfoods - like maca, matcha, and goji berries - that are a bit pricier, you don't have to add those in to have a healthy, wholesome diet.
  6. Go to the right stores. I learned to do this more than ever when I moved to San Francisco. I naively wandered into a store up here that made Whole Foods look like a Food 4 Less. I swear to you, a chicken was $27. I ran out of there, clutching my crumpled dollar bills close to my chest, crying with PTSD from reading price tags on produce. Moral of the story: switch up where you get your groceries, and shop around - sometimes this means going to more than one store for what you need. I try to pick up organic produce at smaller local markets that are less expensive than a Whole Foods - even less expensive than Safeway or Vons! If you are at Whole Foods, opt for their 365 label on dry and frozen goods, which is almost always the least expensive. And for bulk items, try Trader Joe's (known for being an inexpensive option), but be sure to check for labels if you're going for organic products.

If you want to get even more specific and figure out every detail, Google Trips will provide a ready-made itinerary (note: this only applies to the "top 200 cities of the world"). You can pick from a full day, morning, or afternoon schedule, as well as choose the day of the week (helpful in case an attraction is closed on certain days). Want to start your day somewhere specific? You can pin that point and the app will suggest a new array of activities to do based on that information. You can also save other places you're interested in seeing.

The long-standing Internet theory is that Harry Potter, Snape, and Voldemort are modern-day representations of the three brothers.

Voldemort is associated with the older brother, who was obsessed with power. Snape is basically the middle brother, who can't let go of his past love, Lily, and dies a sad death still loving her. This leaves Harry to take on the role of the youngest brother, and Harry himself literally possessed the invisibility cloak.

In 2015, donations reached over $2 million in grants destined for nonprofits, institutions, and charities. A Hands-Free Hack For Peeling Hard-Boiled Eggs

As easy as hard-boiled eggs are to make, they're a pain to peel, that is until I learned this hack. It involves shaking the egg in a glass cup with a bit of water until the eggshell breaks into a million shards. It seemed completely unfathomable until I tested it out myself and discovered it's completely legitimate! Here's how it's done.

Fill a glass cup or a mason jar with about 1/2 inch of water. Then add the egg. If you have a mason jar, screw on the lid.

Turn the cup to the side, pressing one hand over the open end so the water doesn't pour out.

Start shaking! Don't let the egg roll around the glass, but rather make sure it's hitting the sides of the glass. You'll begin to see the eggshell cracking . . .

Keep shaking until the shell slips off! Rinse the egg under cold water to remove any small shell shards, then enjoy.

Meet the New Workout You'll Be Begging to Come to Your City

You can do anything for 30 seconds. Seriously! It doesn't matter if it's the fastest sprint of your life, a set of box jumps, or a rip on the rowing machine; 30 seconds is manageable for pretty much anyone.

That's the idea at Speedplay - one of the most fun, challenging, and dynamic workouts I've ever had the chance to try. A conditioning class that's part high-intensity interval training, part strength and resistance training, and part race against the clock, Speedplay offers a structured but mixed-format class that keeps you on your toes for the fastest 60 minutes of your life.

I first tried Speedplay over the holidays - once at the Beverly Hills studio with trainer Meagan Fulps, and the other at the Downtown LA location with owner and creator Xavier Quimbo. Each class left me breathless, yet wildly energized (and sore). Not only were the instructors exceptional and detail oriented, but they were just the right amount of motivating without being scary or intimidating.

The Workout

Here's how it works. The class is broken up into three parts: the Woodway Curve treadmill, the C2 rowing machine, and floor work with different bodyweight and weighted exercises. Depending on how large the class is, you'll be broken up into two or three groups, and rotate through these circuits. Before the actual workout, you'll do a warmup, and at the end you'll do a cooldown.

A bit about the machines. The Woodway Curve is not your ordinary treadmill: there's no need to set the pace with buttons, just your feet - it's completely self-powered and electricity-free! Xavier told us that he used to have these machines in his physical therapy office, and he uses them in this class because they're safer machines that provide a more effective workout. Then there's the C2 rowing machine, which provides one of the best total-body workouts you can possibly get.

The class I took with Meagan in Beverly Hills had my group start on the treadmill with some sprint training, taking active recovery breaks with a resistance band. Our group then rotated to the floor to do some burpees, push-ups, and plyometric moves, before finishing the first round on the rowing machine, where I did more interval training. Then it starts over, with slight adjustments - so you're not just doing the same thing over and over (see the photo below for that class's rundown). And if you feel like you're hitting a wall? You can take a lap outside. It's great.

In Xavier's class we did box jumps and used barbells and walked backwards on the treadmill. Because each time is so different, you're getting as much of a mental exercise as you are a physical one - so you can't check out. This is an ideal class to take if you need to take your mind off something stressful - you won't have a single moment to think about anything but the task at hand.

The Experience

We're seeing mixed-format classes like this pop up everywhere; it's ideal if you get bored easily or are possibly intimidated by less structured classes. The short bits of interval training make it feel more manageable, and it's always different no matter how many times you go.

The class also has a pretty even distribution of men and women - it's definitely not a barre class and it's definitely not a CrossFit gym, but it seems to be like a cross-section in terms of clientele. This also contributes to the class not feeling too intimidating; it's all different types of people in class (with different levels of fitness), and everyone's pretty focused on their workout, yet still positive and friendly. Class prices vary based on location and membership, but your first class is $15.

Overall Impression

We know that mixing up your workouts and combining cardio with weights is the most effective way to lose weight and see physical progress, so why not get it done in one class? Speedplay does so effectively in a fun, energetic environment that doesn't feel like a bootcamp or scary, militarized format. The instructors are attentive, skilled, and unbelievably motivating. The studio ambiance is high-end without being pretentious.

No sooner have the party poppers and champagne corks been cleared away from New Year celebrations than it's time for more merriment over at Anmer Hall. The Duchess of Cambridge turns 35 on Jan. 9, and Prince William, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte are sure to have big plans on how to make her big day special. So how has Kate celebrated in previous years? As she evolved from girl about town to princess-in-waiting and mum of two, the way she's chosen to mark her day is an indication of what else was happening in her life at that time, as well as giving insight into what makes her tick.

2006

On her 24th birthday - around two years into her relationship with William - Kate celebrated with her family, but her prince was nowhere to be seen. William had enrolled at Sandhurst military academy two days earlier, however, the pair had just returned from a ski break in the Swiss resort of Klosters with Pippa and some friends. Since William and Kate usually took their ski breaks in March and April it's likely this was a little pre-birthday break for Kate.

2007

Again Kate spent her birthday without William by her side, as he had recently joined his first regiment. There had been increasing speculation that William was about to propose on Kate's 25th birthday, and when she left her flat in the morning she was swarmed by paparazzi. An impending proposal was at that time far from the truth, as this was just a couple of months before the couple's breakup, but William was furious and released a statement. "Miss Middleton should, like any other private individual, be able to go about her every day business without this kind of intrusion. The situation is proving unbearable for all those concerned," it read.

2008

Once again, William was not around on Kate's birthday (as he'd recently enrolled in further military training), but the pair were in a much happier place and committed to a future together. Kate piled into a taxi with her mom and sister, and they all went out for the evening in London together.

2009

William was certainly by Kate's side when she turned 27 - much was made of the fact his car was parked in the driveway of her parents' home, marking the first time he'd publicly stayed over with his future in-laws. Kate celebrated at the Middleton's home with her family and boyfriend of five years.

2010

Once again, Kate celebrated her big day at her parents' home with William.

2011

The last birthday Kate celebrated before she got married was a low-key affair. She and William had just returned from the wedding of their friends Sarah Louise Stourton and Harry Aubrey-Fletcher in Yorkshire.

2012

The night before Kate's 30th birthday, she spent the evening with Steven Spielberg, Tom Hiddleston, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Not bad for a rainy day in January! She and William attended the royal gala premiere of War Horse, and it was reported that Spielberg's wife Kate Capshaw passed her a tissue when she noticed Kate was feeling the emotion of the film. The following day, Kate elaborated with dinner in the private dining room of a Kensington restaurant with friends and family.

2013

The following year, when she was pregnant with Prince George, Kate took in the Cirque du Soleil show Kooza at the Royal Albert Hall with William, friends, and family. It was only the second time she'd been seen in public after being hospitalized with hyperemisis gravidarum.

2014

Her first birthday with Prince George was a relaxed one. William was studying agriculture at Cambridge University, so she spent the day with her mother and sister.

2015

Kate was approaching the last trimester of her pregnancy with Princess Charlotte, and spent her birthday quietly at home with William and George.
