Mozart in the Jungle's Gael García Bernal and his longtime pal, Rogue One actor Diego Luna, turned the 2017 Golden Globe Awards red carpet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel into a BFF photo opp. The famous friends relished the opportunity to pose before the cameras ahead of the highly anticipated event, and we couldn't help but notice how supportive they are of each other's careers.
Diego took to Twitter on their way to the red carpet, where he posted a car selfie with Gael, who is nominated for best actor in a TV musical or comedy, captioning the dapper moment with a sweet note of encouragement: "En camino!!! Here we go!!! #goldenglobes #VamosPorElBicampeonatoGael." So fun! Keep scrolling to see more of their adorable time on the red carpet, then discover everything you need to know about Gael.
Who Had the Best Dress of the Night?
As Soon as You Zoom in on Emma Stone's Golden Globes Dress, You'll See Why She's a Star
At the 2017 Golden Globe awards, Emma Stone was a star on the red carpet. Literally. The actress, who brought along her brother to the award show, wore a starry ensemble by Valentino. While the embellishments were a sweet nod to Emma's signature feminine style, the plunging neckline gave the dress a bold and daring feel. This sexy style is one many stars are wearing at the Globes and it looks like Emma got in on the trend.
She kept her accessories to a minimum though, wearing only a diamond collar necklace. We'll say Emma definitely stole the spotlight, because she has us seeing stars. Scroll on to see her dress from all angles, then check out what other gowns we have our eyes on.
Michelle Williams Just Proved That Chokers Are Elegant Enough For the Red Carpet
If there's one star that can make edgy and elegant work on the red carpet it's Michelle Williams, and her Golden Globes look is the dichotomy of our dreams. The actress wore an off-the-shoulder lace Louis Vuitton number and accessorized - not with million dollar bling - but a simple, dainty black choker tied in a bow. Read on for a closer look.
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Flaunt Their Three Decades-Long Romance at the Golden Globes
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are one of Hollywood's sweetest couples, and while attending the Golden Globe Awards together on Sunday night they proved why. After Goldie shared a hilarious photo of her getting ready for their glitzy night out on Instagram, she hit the red carpet with Kurt. The both of them got close for some romantic poses for photographers, before the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 actor stepped back to give Goldie her moment in the spotlight. So cute! Of all the gorgeous couples who showed up to the Globes, these two left us swooning hardest.
Blake Lively Returns to the Golden Globes For the First Time Since 2009 (With Ryan Reynolds!)
It should come as no surprise that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were a beacon of brilliance at Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards in LA. The night marks a series of firsts for both parts of the couple; it's Ryan's first time getting nominated, and his first time attending the ceremony. Blake, on the other hand, has been once before, but not since 2009! The event comes fresh off a thrilling December for the couple: Ryan cleaned up at the Critics' Choice Awards and brought the whole family for his Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony, and the two even sneaked in a day at Disneyland. Here's hoping Ryan's hot streak only gets hotter at tonight's Globes!
Evan Rachel Wood Ditched a Dress For the Golden Globes - and the Reason Will Rock Your World
We're never surprised to see Westworld actress Evan Rachel Wood show up to an event in a suit. She wears them quite often, and we've repeatedly taken note. But so do many stars - and plenty of girls all over the world for that matter. That was the message behind Wood's custom Altuzarra creation:
"I've worn a dress to every Golden Globes. I love dresses. But I wanted young girls know that they aren't a requirement. You don't have to wear one if you don't want to," she said on the red carpet. We'll back her on that one. After all, with the sophisticated touch of a pussy-bow blouse and satin side strips on her pants, Evan Rachel Wood was one of the best dressed at the ceremony. Scroll for a careful look.
If There's a Time to Use the Phrase Pretty in Pink, It's to Refer to Zoe Saldana's Golden Globes Dress
Zoe Saldana's style choices just never disappoint. The Star Trek Beyond actress hit the red carpet at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards with her husband artist Marco Perego, but, to be blunt, we barely even noticed he was there, because we only had eyes for Zoe's incredible pink dress.
With a ruffled bodice and sleeves, the dress went from a baby pink top into a metallic rose bow and down to a bright poppy fuchsia skirt. The Gucci gown was so stunning, we're surprised Zoe didn't have to fight a nominee for it! Scroll ahead to check out her look from every angle, and get a better view at her gorgeous rose eyeshadow and lipstick. Then, scroll through all the other dresses on the Golden Globes red carpet.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel Have a Case of the Golden Globes Giggles
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel make one beautiful pair. The couple just couldn't contain their laughter as they attended the Globes Globes on Sunday. While Jessica looked chic in a plunging dress, the "Can't Stop the Feeling" singer, who is nominated for best original song, looked very handsome in a gray and black suit. Aside from sharing loving glances, they also had a little fun with the cameras as Justin struck a few silly poses.
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Look So Freakin' Cute at the Golden Globes
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard attended the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday night, where they looked as gorgeous as they did cute. The parents of daughters Lincoln and Delta were all smiles when they hit the red carpet together. Kristen stunned in a low-cut black dress while Dax looked handsome in a classic suit and tie. The big night out is just the latest we've seen of the couple. After sharing a kiss with another couple over Christmas, Kristen and Dax showed PDA on the ski slopes.
Mandy Moore Is All Grown Up on the Golden Globes Red Carpet
Mandy Moore stepped onto the Golden Globes red carpet in a navy caped Naeem Kahn ensemble, and it's not the first time we've seen her rock the hue. After she chose a similar style for the Critic's Choice Awards, we can say with confidence that she totally owns this versatile color. She paired it with show-stopping drop earrings to round out her regal look. Keep scrolling to view it in full, then see who's rocking what at tonight's big show.
You Can't Miss Natalie Portman's Nod to Jackie Kennedy at the Golden Globe Awards
Natalie Portman's style has practically become synonymous with Jackie Kennedy, and tonight at the Golden Globe Awards, she proved why. The star walked the red carpet in a bright, yellow Prada gown, and we were immediately reminded of the marigold Oleg Cassini dress Jackie herself wore to the 1961 state dinner. Natalie gave hers a modern take, however, with intricate beading and jewel details on the sleeves and hem. The long-sleeved silhouette hugged her baby bump, and Natalie completed the timeless look with accessories from Tiffany & Co. from 1910.
It's hard not to take notice that Natalie was paying a small tribute to her alter ego (she's nominated for best actress in the film Jackie) at the Golden Globes. Whether it was on purpose or accidental, we say she completely nailed the first lady's style the 2017 way.
The Game of Thrones Cast Abandons Westeros for the Glamorous Golden Globes
Whether you're visiting the Seven Kingdoms or the red carpet, you do not mess with the cast of Game of Thrones. They will destroy you with dragons, swords, and devastatingly beautiful gowns. The show is up for a couple honors at the Golden Globe Awards: best TV drama series and best supporting actress in a drama series for Lena Heady. While everyone is looking their very best for the first major award show of the year, these guys are true pros. Gwendoline Christie, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Sophie Turner are all crushing it. Take a look!
Lily Collins Shuts Down the Red Carpet With Her Sexy-Goth Pink Makeup
Lily Collin's just walked the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet looking like a Pinterest dream.
First, her makeup caught our eye. Lily showed off her flawless porcelain skin with dusty rose pink eye shadow, a nod to her gorgeous gown. We already know pink eye was a top trend of 2016, and it looks like celebrities are keeping it going this year, as well. A matte brick-red lip and her signature bold brows were the bookends to this dreamy look.
Now, let's talk about her hair. She rocked a pile of curls pulled up into a chic bun that was wrapped with a fishtail braid. Please do try this at home - especially for weddings!
Keep reading to see more close-up shots of Lily's look!
The "Pink-Eye" Trend Has Infected the Golden Globes
Pink-hued eye shadow has been dominating the beauty world for the past few months and even celebrities can't get enough of this gorgeous trend. As stars prepared for the 74th Annual Golden Globes, a plethora of the attendees chose pink hues to adorn their eyes.
It's no surprise that so many stars wanted to wear this look on their big night, considering that the pink shades makes the wearer's eye color pop. The makeup look also adds an edgy vibe to any beauty look and pairs gorgeously with the ultra-feminine updos celebrities love to wear during award season.
Read on to see how your favorite celebrities wear the trend and get inspiration to try it yourself.

If you're trying to drop pounds and new to the whole exercise scene, then knowing exactly what to do can be a struggle. Since cardio, strength training, stretching, and days of rest are all equally important, here's a weekly schedule to help you balance it all out and still see results.
In order to lose one pound a week, you need to burn 3,500 calories per week or 500 per day. But exercise is just one piece of the weight-loss puzzle; if you utilize diet changes by cutting calories, then you won't be bound to intense 500-calorie-burning workouts every day. We Are Really Feeling How Much Drew Barrymore Is Feeling Herself at the Golden Globes
Drew Barrymore is back and looking more stunning than ever. The actress, who is gearing up for the premiere of her new Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet, popped up at the Golden Globes in LA on Sunday night in a gorgeous Monique Lhuillier dress. While posing on the red carpet and doing interviews about her upcoming show, Drew was clearly feeling herself; she stood with her hand firmly on her hip, whipped her hair, and was her usual bubbly self as she chatted with Ryan Seacrest. We're totally feeling Drew feeling herself - are you feeling it too?
You Need to See These Photos If Your Child Sits in a Car Seat
An awful car crash in Tacoma, WA, could have ended in serious tragedy last week, but due to proper car seat installation, two children - and their mom - are doing so much better than the photos suggest.
Kylee Barrett was taking her 5-year-old son, Kolton, to school one morning with her 2-year-old, Hunter, also in tow when the car hit a patch of black ice. As the car slid, Barrett swerved to avoid hitting another car head-on, which forced them into a tree that crushed Hunter's side of the car. The impact caused the seat to bend but absorb the force, which kept Hunter safe even though the car flipped upside down.
Had Hunter's rear-facing Safety 1st seat not been properly installed, this family could be dealing with much more than a totaled car, Hunter's broken left femur, and a few bruises and scrapes. Facebook user Heather Viers is using the photo of Hunter's crushed seat to spread the word about proper car seat use: "This specific seat retails for $100. It's NOT a 'nice' seat, but it further illustrates the point that you don't have to spend a fortune to keep your child safe. Get your car seats checked by a CPST. Use it properly every.single.time. The life of your child relies on it."
Barrett has started a GoFundMe page to help with some of the costs that insurance isn't covering but is mostly focused on sharing her story to inform other parents. She says even though she's sore and bruised, her kids are still here to drive her crazy, and she "couldn't be happier."
If you own a car and a car seat, you need to read through and see these photos for yourself.
SJP's Globes Dress Will Give You Flashbacks to Carrie Bradshaw's Wedding Day
If Sarah Jessica Parker's Golden Globes gown gives you a little deja vu, we feel you. The white ballgown sent us right down memory lane to the iconic Vivienne Westwood dress Carrie Bradshaw once wore for her wedding day.
Just like the wedding dress, the cascading silk Vera Wang gown was made for twirling, as you can already tell from the actress's pre-show gram. Now, if only SJP would indulge us on the red carpet with a Carrie-esque spin or two.
You'll Be Mesmerized by Gina Rodriguez's Old-Hollywood Flapper Fringe Dress at the Golden Globes
No surprise here: Gina Rodriguez turned heads at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on Jan. 8.
The Jane the Virgin actress, who received her third consecutive nomination this year for her role as Jane, wore a trendy, 1920s-inspired plunging halter metallic fringe dress to the star-studded event, practically shutting down the red carpet with her guest of the night: her older sister, Rebecca. (She brought her dad last year!)
Gina gave her social media followers a sneak peek of the look, sharing a few photos of the getting ready process and a nice message of gratitude: "Today is a great day, I can and I will," she wrote, quoting her 2015 acceptance speech, "3rd nomination, 4th season renewal and family, friends, cast, and supporters that have all helped me get here." Keep scrolling to see more pictures of Gina's sultry backless dress, then admire her Hollywood style evolution.

Nothing Will Ever Beat Chrissy Teigen's Cry Face at Last Year's Golden Globes
Chrissy Teigen is known for speaking her mind, and at the 2016 Golden Globes she earned a reputation for her waterworks. The supermodel just couldn't hold back her emotions during the glitzy event when her husband, John Legend, won an award for the song he made for Selma. As is customary at award shows, the program cut to Chrissy's reaction, and within minutes, her tears were a trending topic online. The response was not lost upon Chrissy, who posted a series of tweets and an Instagram photo referencing her sweet yet hilarious moment.
Sorry I don't practice my cry face okay
- christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 12, 2015
It's been 5 minutes and I'm a meme
- christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) January 12, 2015
Although this year's show is shaping up to be full of memorable moments, few things will ever be incredible enough to top Chrissy's facial expression. Read on to see pictures from John and Chrissy's emotional and PDA-heavy night!
The Cast of This Is Us Isn't Making Us Cry for Once at the Golden Globes
It should come as no surprise that This Is Us staged a full takeover at Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards in LA. After all, the show was one of the Fall's hottest new additions, and received a handful of nominations to boot. Let's just say we're excited to see the cast all glammed up instead of breaking our hearts for once. That last thing we need right now is a cry session.
It Looks Like the Stranger Things Cast Stepped Out of a James Bond Movie at the Golden Globes
The cast of Stranger Things picked up a few Golden Globe Award nominations this year, but even if they don't take any of those trophies home, they should get an honorary award for having the most fun together. After entertaining the Emmys with a musical number and goofing off at the Critics' Choice Awards, the pint-sized cast hit the red carpet at the Golden Globes ready to make everyone around them smile. Millie Bobby Brown stunned in a silver dress while posing in a few solo pictures (where she flashed the number 11, naturally). Meanwhile, her male costars - Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Finn Wolfhard, and Caleb McLaughlin - looked James Bond-worthy in their group shots. Looks like their real-life friendship is still going strong!
The Golden Globe Awards Are Packed With Sexy Men
The Golden Globe Awards took over Beverly Hills on Sunday night, and in addition to the gorgeous red carpet dresses and cute celebrity couples, we couldn't take our eyes off all the sexy men. This Is Us stars Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia rocked the red carpet, Riz Ahmed showed off his signature half-smile, and Dax Shepard looked more adorable than ever. Keep reading for all the sexy Golden Globes men your heart can take.
The Golden Globes Doubled as a Romantic Night Out For Hollywood's Biggest Couples
The Golden Globe Awards are not only an opportunity for many talented actors to take home well-deserved trophies for their work in movies and TV throughout the year, but also for celebrity couples to flaunt their adorable relationships left and right. Sterling K. Brown and wife Ryan Michelle Bathe struck a pose, while longtime lovebirds Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance made us more than a little jealous of their chemistry. Although they rocked significantly less velvet than people at the 1997 event, there were still plenty of giggles, adorable PDA, and picture-perfect smiles all over the red carpet.
Mandy Moore's Red Carpet Evolution Will Bring You Right Back to 2002
Long before Mandy Moore landed her role on one of this year's biggest TV dramas, This is Us, she had already taken Hollywood as a teen and pop star - and if you were in high school in the early 2000s, you certainly remember that. I, like most millennials, will forever think of Mandy as Princess Diaries' mean girl or belting out "Only Hope" on stage to Landon in A Walk to Remember. I will think of her dressed in pedal pushers and tube tops and flared jeans and pointed-toe pumps on early aughts red carpets for the MTV Movie Awards, but I never really thought I'd see her dressed up and nominated for a Golden Globe; and I'm pretty freaking excited about it.
Breakout stars or legends like Meryl Streep are an inspiration for obvious reasons, but Mandy's accomplishments this year hint at something different. This is Mandy growing up; the 32 year-old actress looks elegant and confident in her own skin - even better than she did in her 20s - and her Golden Globe-nominated role is far more interesting than anything she's played before. She's a reminder that most of the time we're actually getting better with age, dammit. A quick look back at her red carpet past and you'll probably nod in agreement.

Look Closely or You Might Miss These Beautiful Celebrity Tattoos From the Golden Globes
There are a lot of obviously elements to admire when a celebrity walks the red carpet at an award show - her gown, her hair, her makeup - but make sure you don't miss the details. And by that, we mean her tattoos! Stars often cover their body ink for different movie and TV roles, but everything gets exposed when they rock those sexy dresses.
Also, because celebrities often get access to top tattoo artists, they often have chicer-than-average designs. So if you're thinking about getting inked, you may want to look for some Hollywood inspiration. Keep reading to see all of the tattoos we spotted at the Golden Globes.
Tracee Ellis Ross Wants You to Focus On 1 Thing Tonight - and It's Not Her Dress
If there's one person you shouldn't miss on the red carpet at the 2017 Golden Globe awards, it's Tracee Ellis Ross. The star showed up in a beaded, sheer Zuhair Murad dress, but that wasn't what really caught our attention. Glance down at her hands and you'll notice she went all out on the accessories - wearing big, bold silver rings on each of her fingers. We counted a total of 12 rings (a selection from Yeprem Jewellery, Hueb, LDezen, and Noudar Jewels) and doubt anyone will match Tracee's statement look of the night.
Judging from the photos below, it seems Tracee was most definitely a fan of the look too, posing dramatically for the cameras with her rings in focus. Scroll on to see Tracee's rings from all angles; you can't miss them.
See How Much Gina Rodriguez Has Changed Since Her First Red Carpet
Gina Rodriguez's first time walking a red carpet only took place in 2010, and it wasn't really until four years later, with the premiere of her TV show Jane the Virgin and that memorable Golden Globes speech, that her name was on everyone's minds and on every award list. Though we've only known Gina for a few years, her style and empowering Hollywood evolution are undeniable. Keep reading to see the Puerto-Rican-American actress through the years (and more than a few hairstyles).

Why It Took Me 5 Years to Lose 40 Pounds - Don't Make These Mistakes
My weight-loss journey wasn't one of those amazing stories like you see on The Biggest Loser where the pounds just melted off. Oh no. I spent years making the same mistakes over and over, which meant not losing a single pound. If you're on the quest to lose weight, learn from my story on what not to do and how I finally made the shift to where I am today.
Before - Circa 1999
- Skipping breakfast: I knew I needed to eat less, so I would hold off on eating until I was absolutely famished, which meant nothing until lunchtime. Not only did this slow down my metabolism, but I also ended up feeling so hungry that I ate a much bigger lunch than I normally would have. This weight-loss tactic of mine actually made me gain weight. When I started eating breakfast, the pounds started to drop.
- Nothing but yoga: When I was overweight, I felt really self-conscious wearing skintight pants in a group fitness class (my gym had huge mirrors), and I felt even worse running outside (it only took one rude comment out of a speeding car about my bouncing chest). Then, a good friend took me to my first yoga class, and I was hooked. The whole environment was so loving and supportive - it didn't matter what I looked like, and no one was looking at me. I started going three times a week but was puzzled that even after a few months, I wasn't losing weight. I didn't realize that not all types of exercise are the same, until another friend suggested I start including cardio. I started with some short 15-minute runs a few times a week, and it was like a light switch turned on. The scale numbers started going down, finally.
- I was a carb queen: Crackers, bread, cereal, pasta? Sign me up! I loved carbs, and even though I chose the complex variety, they were still carbs. I ate them for every meal and snack, which didn't leave much room for high-fiber fresh fruits and veggies. I finally took a step back and realized that my diet consisted of mostly bread. My belly was not happy, and I ended up going gluten-free for six years. Of course, I didn't do that right either, since I just replaced the carb-loaded foods I normally ate with ones that were gluten-free, but when I started eating more produce, that's when I noticed a change in how my belly felt and looked.
- Too much of a good thing: I inherited an enormous sweet tooth from my mother, and I knew I had to get that under control (and stop baking!). I started only shopping at health food stores and filled my kitchen with all the healthy foods I could find: cashews, dried mango, fresh juice, peanut butter, whole grains, and hummus. I cut out the cookies and ice cream, but it didn't matter because I never measured a single bite of the foods I was eating. Of course, I gained weight spooning peanut butter from the jar and didn't start losing it until I got a hold of some measuring cups and spoons to see what appropriate portion sizes really looked like.
How to Ditch That Pudgy Pooch
After - Circa 2008
I was never naturally thin or fit, so when I gained that 40 pounds, I was probably already 10 or more pounds overweight to begin with. My weight-loss journey lasted about five years, much longer than it should have due to the mistakes I kept making. Once I started keeping track of my calorie intake, focusing on fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains, and was running and doing yoga regularly five times a week, it took about a year, losing a pound a week, to get me to my goal weight.
Being on the healthy path was so fulfilling, not just because it made me feel comfortable in my skin, but I just felt so much more radiant, more energetic. I wanted to share that with others, to help them feel that joy, so I became a yoga instructor in 2000 and a health and fitness writer in 2007.
Today
Even through two pregnancies, I was able to maintain a healthy weight and get back to my prebaby body; it just took time and determination. So don't give up. Stick with your healthy ways, and you'll soon have an "After" picture to show off too.

See If Your Kid Is Going to Sleep at the Right Time Based on This Viral Bedtime Chart

Nearly every parent of a school-age child wonders if they are getting their kids to bed at the right time. Too early, and the little ones goof around and never fall asleep. But too late, and no matter how quickly they drift off, they're still exhausted the next day.
The administrators at Wilson Elementary School in Kenosha, WI, decided to help frustrated parents by providing a bedtime chart based on age and usual wake-up time.

Turns out, the recommendations were shocking to even the most regimented parents. The chart, which was posted to the school's Facebook page, has been shared more than 360,000 times, and the reason is clear: most every mom has been way off this whole time. (One parent's reaction? "This may be good in theory, but in practice . . . this is garbage.")
Take a look and see if your kid is going to bed at the "right" time.

5 Theories That Could Explain Who Rey's Parents Are in Star Wars
We came away from watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens with more questions than we can count, but the one that hasn't ceased to stop itching our brains since we left the movie theater is the matter of Rey's parents. While the character, played by Daisy Ridley, is unquestionably the hero of Episode VII, much of her past and familial lineage is shrouded in mystery. J.J. Abrams recently shed some light on the topic during an appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival that seems to have ruled out the biggest theories about Rey's parents, saying, "Rey's parents are not in Episode VII, so I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too." Is Abrams just trying to throw fans off the scent of Rey's real parents? Keep reading to see our theories on the subject, and please note: major spoilers below!

13 Photos of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal's Adorable Bromance Through the Years
The friendship between Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal goes way, way back - to two or three days after Diego was born and Gael was just over 1-year-old. The pair, whose moms were close friends, had an instant connection that only grew stronger as they starred together in world-renowned Y Tu Mamá También.
From the moment these two hit a red carpet together to promote the 2001 film, it was clear they were basically brothers, teasing each other for the cameras, smiling wide as they joked around, and always hugging in photos. As their careers grow - Gael won a Golden Globe for Mozart in the Jungle in 2016 and is nominated for another one, and Diego starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - let's take a look back at how it all started for these two. New Moms: Just Say No to Frequent Visitors Right After Birth
When people hear you're going into labor (and by people I mean friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc.), everyone will be dying to meet the brand-new baby. Forget how exhausted you are or if you're recovering from any kind of birth trauma: it's all about the baby. You? No one cares. Sure, maybe a handful of people will ask how you are, but most will push your tired butt aside and say, "Give me that kid!"
It's a sad reality for us moms that no one quite cares how labor went but they do care how the baby is. And who can blame folks for wanting to see your little bundle of joy? Not us! We love them more than the visitors do, but I can guarantee you that the visitors will want to come in droves. You're probably thinking, "Oh sure, I can't wait to have everyone see the baby," but before you start planning visitors to filter in after Junior or Princess arrives, heed my advice carefully.
I personally had no one, and yes, I mean no one, other than her dad and myself, see the baby for the first night she was here. I had my daughter at 6:06 p.m. after 24 hours of labor, five of pushing, and ending with a C-section. I was beat. Our parents didn't arrive until early afternoon the next day, and that was about it for the following few days until I felt ready for visitors and a bit better after my C-section. Why did I put the "no visitors" vibe up? Here's why:
You'll Never Get Those Moments Back Again
It was our first and only child. For those of you with more than one child, consider how differently your post-labor or C-section life was with baby number one . . . and then baby number two. With your first child - and for some of us our only - you'll never get those quiet moments of just mom, dad, and baby again. Even if you have a million kids, don't you want to cherish those first few hours with just your immediate family? The first nursing or feeding. The first time you hold your baby. Do you really need a ton of fanfare, or is it just nice to have some private intimacy when you've brought another being into the world?
I wanted the privacy and time to simply drink in what had just happened: I became a mom. He became a dad. Give us a few hours to cherish these moments before all the noise and craziness of people, opinions, and presents come to shower in on our little world.
Sssh. Let it be quiet. For just a bit.
Nursing
I didn't want anyone to make me anxious or uncomfortable while I was trying to nurse for the first time. Plus, even after the grandparents came, we still kept it quiet with visitors until I could get into a better rhythm - or, in other words, could get my daughter to latch well instead of continuing to latch shallowly so my nipples bled. With fewer people to fawn, fuss, and add their two cents, nursing got off to a good start for me. Yes, we had latch issues, but because I kept the visitors list short, we could work on this with a lactation consultant and my ex-husband could focus on supporting me. I can't tell you how glad I am that we did this. Never once do I think, "Gee, I wish we had more visitors that first week of our child's life!"
Hormones (and Food)
Hello, hormones! Nope, they don't stop. At least not for a while postpartum. The crying and emotional moments? Yeah, I preferred to let those happen in front of people I was close to, namely my husband at the time. Not to mention I had endured hyperemesis gravidarum during my pregnancy and was finally hungry after birth. I wanted to eat and start to feel better while dealing with the crying and mood swings among "my peeps" and not the adoring audience for my daughter.
Plus, who feels superawesome when they're wearing a maxi pad the size of a car, trying to poop, and dealing with bloody nipples and potentially ginormous and superengorged breasts while trying to change a diaper for the first time and waddle around post-C-section or birth? Nobody! It's nice to feel a little crappy and achy and emotional without the whole peanut gallery around.
Routine
It was great to get into a little routine during the time my ex was off from work for the first two weeks of my daughter's life. Scheduling visitors properly helped any disruptions in our new parent routine. It made our lives go more smoothly when he went back to work and I was home by myself as a new stay-at-home mother. Plus, by that time, I was dying for visitors and ready. Do you remember, mommies, what it felt like the first time you took your baby out in the world all by yourself? I do. It felt like a victory just lifting the car seat alone!
No matter what you decide, consider who you want to visit you and when before the baby is here so you have an idea of the amount of chaos you want to invite into your home and hospital - or not. And don't feel bad if you need to say, "Hey, best friend. I am bleeding like a stuck pig and am having a tough time with nursing. Can you see me in another few days?" You don't owe anyone an apology for holding off on visiting. All you need to focus on is your new family member or members!
