Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's Contentious Divorce Has Been Finalized
In late May, news broke that Amber Heard had filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, whom she married in a lavish island ceremony in February 2015. Although the couple had seemed happy and the news came out of left field, Amber, 30, also filed a restraining order against the 53-year-old Alice Through the Looking Glass actor, which included allegations of domestic abuse. After much back-and-forth, the former couple finally finalized their divorce in Jan. 2017. Keep reading to see the most important information about their relationship and the events leading up to their settlement.

- Amber files for divorce from Johnny. Three days after Johnny's mother passed away, Amber filed for divorce on May 25 and cited irreconcilable differences in her petition. The couple has been married for 15 months and has no prenuptial agreement.
- Johnny speaks out about the ordeal. A short statement given through his representative to Us Weekly on May 26 that said: "Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation, and lies about his personal life. Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly."
- Amber is granted a restraining order from Johnny. The Magic Mike XXL actress filed a domestic violence restraining order accompanied by graphic photos of her bruised face on the morning of May 27. A source told People that the bruises aren't a rare occurrence, saying, "This was not an isolated event" and that "this was only the latest incident." Later that day, Amber was photographed coming out of court after a judge granted her request for temporary order.
- Johnny was photographed fitting an elderly woman with a hearing aid on the afternoon of May 27, during a visit to Lisbon, Portugal, with his band, The Hollywood Vampires. Later that evening, Johnny performed at the Rock in Rio festival and was pictured with his bandmates ahead of the show. While he has yet to release a statement about Amber's claims or the restraining order against him, a judge denied Amber's request for sole possession of their dog, Pistol, stating that there was "insufficient showing of need to protect pet dog."
- Vanessa Paradis and Lily-Rose Depp come to Johnny's defense. Upon hearing about Amber's domestic violence allegations against Johnny, both the actor's ex-partner and daughter penned notes in his support. On May 27, Vanessa wrote, "I believe with all my heart that these recent allegations being made are outrageous," claiming, "In all the years I have known Johnny, he has never been physically abusive with me and this looks nothing like the man I lived with for 14 wonderful years." Likewise, Lily took to Instagram and shared a childhood photo of her and her dad, along with a note that read, "My dad is the sweetest, most loving person I know, he's been nothing but a wonderful father to my little brother and I, and everyone who knows him would say the same."
- Comedian Doug Stanhope claims Amber is blackmailing Johnny. In a guest column for The Wrap, Doug - who has been friends with Johnny for years - wrote at length about how he believes Amber isn't as innocent as she seems. "Amber was now going to leave him, threatening to lie about him publicly in any and every possible duplicitous way if he didn't agree to her terms," he said. "Blackmail is what I would imagine other people might put it, including the manner in which he is now being vilified."
- Amber's lawyer slams blackmail accusations. Attorney Peter Sample was quick to shut down Doug's article about Amber with a follow-up statement to The Wrap that reads: "[The] allegations against Ms. Heard are absolutely and unequivocally false," adding that the claim she's blackmailing Johnny "has no basis in reality and is nothing but the typical celebrity muckraking for profit."
- The legal team for Amber speaks out against Johnny. Lead attorney Samantha F. Spector and cocounsel Joseph P. Koenig provided an in-depth statement to Just Jared on May 31 defending the Magic Mike XXL actress. "As the result of Amber's decision to decline giving an initial statement to the LAPD, her silence has been used against her by Johnny's team. Amber did not provide a statement to the LAPD in an attempt to protect her privacy and Johnny's career," they began, before ending the lengthy statement with, "We took the high road. Unfortunately, Johnny's team immediately went to the press and began viciously attacking Amber's character. Amber is simply a victim of domestic violence, and none of her actions are motivated by money. Amber is a brave and financially independent woman who is showing the courage of her convictions by doing the right thing against Johnny's relentless army of lawyers and surrogates. The Family Law Court is not going to be influenced by misinformation placed in the social media based on anonymous sources. Amber is the victim. Amber is a hero."
- People reveals new photos of a battered Amber. A photo of a bruised Amber appeared on the cover of People's June 13 issue (which was released on June 1). In its exclusive photos, she has both a bruised eye and a cut lip. In its cover story, People also revealed details from the court papers, in which Amber alleges that Johnny showed up at her birthday party "inebriated and high" and "violently shoved me to the floor." She also states that Depp hit her with a cell phone.
- Police are called to Amber and Johnny's home. According to reports, Amber's attorney called law enforcement on June 13, when Johnny's representative showed up to their home to retrieve his belongings. Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department told Us Weekly that the move wasn't in violation of Amber's restraining order as neither one of the parties were home at the time. The officers simply stood by to "ensure that only the items listed in the court order were being removed."
- Amber retracts her petition for spousal support. The actress's attorney filed a declaration to withdraw her request for spousal support from Johnny, saying the only reason she requested it was because she thought it was standard procedure in a divorce case. Amber, who wanted $50,000 per month from the actor, says the request is being "used against me to distract and divert the public away from the very serious real issue of domestic violence."
- Amber plans to testify in court. "As of now, the plan is for Amber to testify on Friday," a source told Us Weekly on June 15. According to court documents, Amber stated she "could and would competently testify" if called as a witness. However, Johnny's attorney, Laura Wasser, also filed documents requesting that the court deny Heard's testimony if she failed to "appear for deposition" or did not "produce the requested documents at her deposition." There is no word yet on whether Johnny will attend the hearing.
- Johnny files to keep divorce details private. On July 20, the actor's legal team asked a judge to order that his financial records be kept private throughout the rest of divorce proceedings. His attorney, Laura Wasser, argued that although Amber has the right to see his finances, the media does not. "Johnny is merely trying to protect the documents and information Amber seeks from unwarranted disclosure to the media and other individuals not involved in the case," she said in the official documents.
- Amber accuses her ex of stalling their divorce. In documents obtained by Us Weekly on July 26, it was revealed that Amber has accused Johnny of stonewalling their split. "[Depp] and his counsel's demand for the execution of these two non-disclosure agreements which impose undue financial hardships and burdens on [Heard] are nothing but blatant threats by [Depp] and are illustrative of his continued attempts to thwart real progress in this case," they read.
- The domestic violence hearing gets pushed back. A status hearing was held on Aug. 9, which resulted in Depp and Heard's domestic violence hearing being delayed. The reason for the delay seems to be that neither Depp nor Heard has completed their depositions. Depp's lawyer is requesting that Heard do hers first, and that there be time between hers and his. The hearing is now scheduled to take place on Aug. 17.
- A disturbing video allegedly showing Johnny arguing with Amber leaks. A day before the actress was set to be deposed, a clip surfaced of Johnny throwing a fit over an unknown incident. In the footage, Johnny is seen slamming kitchen cabinets, breaking objects, and yelling at Amber as she appears to record everything on her phone. While many speculated that Amber leaked the footage, she denied those reports on Saturday.
- Johnny and Amber settle their divorce. "Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love," the two said in a joint statement to TMZ on Aug. 16. "Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains. There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm." According to TMZ, the actress also withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order with prejudice, meaning she cannot refile the case.
- Amber's lawyer retracts her statement. After resolving the divorce on Aug. 16, Amber Heard's attorney, Samantha F. Spector, took back her client's previous statement about the settlement. "The statement is untrue and we retract it, without qualification," she told ABC News. "My assertion that Amber Heard has been vindicated in the court of public opinion is not true. We regret the error and apologize to Johnny Depp."
- Amber donates her $7 million divorce settlement to charity. In a statement to People on Aug. 18, the actress revealed that the money would be divided amongst charities with "a particular focus to stop violence against women," including the ACLU and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, where she has volunteered for over a decade.
- Johnny refuses to finalize the divorce and donate the settlement. Their divorce hit another snag on Dec. 14 when it was revealed that Johnny still hasn't donated all of the money he owes Amber. In legal documents obtained by E! News, it appears the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is not only pushing back against finalizing the agreement, but has violated a court-allotted timeline of requirements that includes "the division of personal property, shipping [Amber's] belongings from his private island in the Bahamas, transferring a Range Rover into [Amber's] name and Johnny's outstanding debts incurred from cars, Neil Lane jewelry, and stylist fees." So far all he's done is pay the initial $200,000 donation, so Amber and her legal team are fighting back.
- Johnny wants Amber to pay legal fees toward his attorneys' fees and costs. In new court documents filed by Johnny's divorce attorney, Laura Wasser, on Tuesday, the actor is asking that the court order Amber to pay $100,000 toward his attorneys' fees and costs. He also wants that amount deducted from his next divorce settlement payment if Amber fails to pay within 10 days of the court's order.
- Amber's attorney hits back with a spirited reply. In response to Laura Wasser's filing, Amber's attorney Pierce O'Donnell gave a statement to Us Weekly about how they intend to proceed. "After his string of recent setbacks at the box office, I'm glad that Johnny Depp seems to have rediscovered his comic touch with this laughable motion," he said. "It is just another lame attempt by Mr. Depp and his team to not pay my client the money she is owed. We look forward to prevailing in court - and to getting sick children and women in need the money that Mr. Depp is denying them."
- Johnny's team claims Amber just wants her 15 minutes of fame. In new documents obtained by E! News in December 2016, Johnny's team states that Amber is using their divorce to seek more fame. "Her request is entirely unnecessary under the law and suggests a last-ditch effort to garner media attention and somehow further her public persona by virtue of proximity to Johnny Depp. From the inception of this dissolution Amber has sought to build a case in the court of public opinion," the documents state. "Amber is now courting renewed media attention with this unnecessary Request for Order. Her application is not only a blatant attempt to extend her fifteen minutes of fame but also a waste of the Court's limited time and resources and an embarrassing grab for addition and unwarranted attorney's fees."
- Amber fires back. In response to Johnny's statement, the 30-year-old actress claims Johnny and his team "seem to wish to prolong this proceeding as a means of punishing me." Amber, who is asking the court to deny Johnny's request and award her $36,475 in attorney's fees, says, "I want to be divorced from Johnny now." Amber's attorney, Pierce O'Donnell echoed her response, stating that his client "wants the prompt dissolution of marriage." He also alleged that Johnny has "frustrated the final settlement of this matter at every turn through his relentless, mean-spirited campaign against Heard."
- Their divorce is finalized. After months of contentious arguing, TMZ reports that Amber and Johnny will officially be single by the end of the day on Jan. 13. Johnny has agreed to pay Amber $7 million to settle the divorce, and both will foot their own legal bills.

Britt Robertson and Asa Butterfield come from two different worlds - at least they do in the new movie The Space Between Us. Coming out on Feb. 3, the sci-fi romance tells the tale of Tulsa (Robertson) and Gardner (Butterfield), teens who begin a friendship online. What Tulsa doesn't know is that Gardner is from Mars. (Now is the time for any "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" jokes you want to toss out.) We visited the film's Albuquerque set back in October 2015 and chatted with the down-to-Earth actors . . . see what I did there? Because it's a movie about space. Here's what we learned from the budding* superstars!
- Robertson loves Dr. Phil: "Today I watched a really crazy episode of Dr. Phil that I recorded yesterday. It was about the Subway guy, Jared, and the tapes. They play all the recordings of when he was speaking to this woman who was recording it for the FBI. And listening to these tapes was fascinating. Anyway, so that's what I've been doing, getting super depressed and freaked out . . . It's always really fascinating stories. I think as an actor you're constantly observing human behavior and that show is just so good for the actor's mind I guess. You wouldn't meet these people otherwise, that are going through these crazy circumstances. So it's like news, but better."
- Meanwhile, Butterfield passes the time on set by playing Super Smash Bros.: "I play Pikachu most of the time," he said. "It's one of the best. That's my in-between-scenes entertainment."
- He's also into a ton of bands you've never heard of: "I listen to a lot of hip-hop and reggae dance music. Garage, jungle, drum and bass. Have you heard of Gramatik?" (Nope.) "Flying Lotus, J Dilla are cool."
- She still counts Life Unexpected as her favorite experience: "I saw Shiri [Appleby] a couple weeks before I came out here," she said, of her former costar. "She has a baby now so I went and hung out with her, and she's pregnant with her second one so it's good to see her. And Liz [Tigelaar], the creator, she has a baby now too. So lots of babies! And lots of hangout time."
- They had to avoid each other before they could meet: "The first time I met Asa was when I came in for rehearsals early on," said Robertson. "We got to the later part of the day and they were like, 'Oh, Asa's arriving,' and I was gonna go back to my trailer and they were like, 'No, you can't go back to your trailer because Peter, the director, really wants to introduce you two.' So the first part of him being on set was us avoiding one another so that Peter could introduce us, which was a little anti-climactic because he's just a person and I'm a person and we said 'hi' and shook hands and then I was like, 'How's it going?' and he was like, 'good.'
- The movie is right up his alley: "I'm a big science fiction fan," he said. "I think what's great about sci-fi is that everything that you sort of see, it all comes from technology that we already have, but just it's far more advanced. So they are almost giving glimpses into our future, whereas fantasy is totally, totally made up. But this is almost believable, which I think is pretty cool."

Remember what happens at the end? An angry, vengeful Darth Vader intercepts a rebel spaceship and picks off soldiers one by one with his lightsaber and some pretty impressive Force work. Then, of course, we catch a glimpse of Princess Leia. Here's the thing: according to a new interview with Yahoo!, that Darth Vader sequence almost didn't happen. Or, more accurately, it wasn't added until postproduction. "That was something conceptualized a little later," editor John Gilroy revealed. "It was a fantastic add . . . a really great punch in the arm and something I think fans wanted to see." In fact, that scene was added so late in the game that a different actor stepped into the Vader suit. While Spencer Wilding played the villain for most of the movie, it was Daniel Naprous who was recruited for this final part. Can you image if the scene hadn't made it in?!

Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Wispy, Shedding Hair
I lived for the luxe locks I sported during and immediately after my pregnancies. I paraded around like a supermodel, tossing my hair from side to side as if everyone in the world were mesmerized by my thick, shiny strands that seemed to grow by the second. I was even prepared for the postpartum hair loss many women experience once their pregnancy hormones subside.
What I wasn't prepared for was the wispy bangs that seemed to appear overnight around my face. I awoke one morning, about five months after delivering my son, and as I stood there blow drying my hair, I couldn't get the lion's mane of wisps to stay down. I tried different hair serums, headbands, and hats before I just gave into the baby-fine hair that seemed to stay with me for months. In fact, I would marvel in the fact that my tot was ready for his first haircut around the same time my wisps finally blended in with the rest of my hair!
So what should women know about that postpartum shedding and wispy new bangs? Dr. Alan J. Bauman, board-certified hair restoration physician, explained to POPSUGAR exactly what moms need to realize about their changing post-baby hair.

Fluctuating hormones during pregnancy can cause many women to experience a surge in hair follicles, leading to thicker and more luscious hair. However, when the hormones decrease after you give birth, so can your hair. "Because of natural hair growth cycling, every day, a certain percentage of hair follicles on the scalp are 'resting' and therefore not producing hair," Bauman explained. "While pregnant, many women see a surge in their estrogen and progesterone levels, which is believed to shift many of the resting follicles into the natural 'growing' phase. After the baby is born, these hormone levels, along with the resting and growing ratios, return to the pre-pregnancy level. It is this sudden change that often causes the hair to noticeably shed and hair volume to decrease." - Is it permanent?
This type of hair loss is usually only temporary, however Bauman explains that how long and how severely a woman sheds following pregnancy depends on the individual. - When does it start?
Postpartum hair loss isn't immediate. "Loss usually occurs between three and six months postpartum, and varies in severity for each woman," Bauman said. - When does it stop?
According to Bauman, the excessive shedding usually stops as the growth cycles return to normal. This typically occurs anywhere from six to twelve months after delivery. - How long does it take your hair to recover?
Depending on the hair length that you started with, it can take a year or more for your hair to"feel" back normal but there is no guarantee. "Unfortunately for some women, especially those at high risk for hereditary hair loss, their head of hair never seems to regain its original volume," Bauman said. - Could this be a sign of something bigger?
The severe shedding that occurs after pregnancy could be indicative of things to come later in life. "Many women with significant hereditary female pattern hair loss during menopause often tell me that their shedding and hair loss after pregnancy was severe and that their hair unfortunately never returned to its normal pre-pregnancy state," Bauman said. "If there is a hereditary hair loss history (mother's or father's side and either gender), and postpartum hair loss is severe, this warrants tracking by a hair restoration physician who can create a 'master plan' for intervening if necessary." - What can women experiencing excessive shedding do to treat it?
There are several options for women who are experiencing worrisome postpartum shedding. To help maintain hair follicles and stimulate healthy hair growth, Bauman advises talking to your doctor about nutritional supplements. "Keep in mind however, that these are not going to change the rate of hair growth or the amount of follicles in a growth phase. In order to favorably influence hair growth cycling, after childbirth I usually recommend low-level FDA-cleared laser light therapy, because it is non-chemical and has absolutely no side-effects," he said. "We could also consider applying an effective prescription topical medication to the scalp or performing a 'Vampire' PRP Platelet Rich Plasma treatment, as long as the new mom is not nursing."

I was all too familiar with what a woman's battle with breast cancer can look like, and I knew it wasn't something I was prepared to face myself.
At my routine gynecological checkup just a few weeks earlier, my doctor asked about my family's medical history. It was my first time seeing this ob-gyn, so while getting her up to speed, I mentioned that my mom is BRCA1 positive. BRCA is the "breast cancer gene," and I knew there was a 50/50 chance I'd inherit it from her. I could tell this new information caught the doctor's attention. She lifted her head from my medical records, looked at me intently, and asked, "What were your test results?" When I admitted I hadn't been tested yet, her concern was clear. She told me about her patient who had inherited the BRCA gene from her mother. She was in her late 20s and had already been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. HBO's Documentary About the Paris Attacks Looks Deeply Affecting
Unless you're a metalhead, the first time you heard of the band Eagles of Death Metal was probably on Nov. 13, 2015, when terrorists attacked the Bataclan theater in Paris. The band was playing a sold-out show when gunmen opened fire in the venue, killing 89 people. Months later, U2 invited the group to return to Paris and join them at their concert, in a show of solidarity with their fans - and the country. Colin Hanks (who met the band when he made 2015's All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records) documented their journey and has turned it into a movie for HBO: Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis, meaning "Our Friends." It will premiere on Feb. 13.
Issa Rae Assures You: She Is as Insecure and Awkward as Ever
Issa Rae is rolling up to a cocktail party on Sunset Boulevard to celebrate the HBO show she created and where signature cocktails inspired by the character she earned a Golden Globe nomination for playing on it are being raised in her honor. But the star of HBO's Insecure insists the title of the series still describes her to a T.
Issa built a name for herself with her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl, which led to Insecure. Clearly, she has made it, is envied by millions, and is an independent, self-made woman. So I can't help but ask her if she worries about straying too far from the authenticity of those adjectives that made her shows - and her - connect with audiences. She doesn't even blink before answering. "Not at all. It's not going anywhere," she shakes her head. "Even at the Golden Globes, I was like, 'Oh. I'm never gonna feel like this is like a normal thing, and I'm never gonna feel comfortable, and that's OK with me.' [Insecure] is about a journey to growing confident in your insecurities, and I feel like I'm further along on that journey than that character is currently . . . but it's a journey, nonetheless."
I sat down with Issa, a group of fellow writers, and one of those aforementioned cocktails (the "Drunk AF," which is billed as a cocktail to order when you'd rather be at home with a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos and ranch dip) at the LA bash. Issa talked about feeling pressure to speak on behalf of the black community, the audience divide over Insecure's first season finale, and how she learned to operate like a "boss-ass b*tch." On Her Night at the Golden Globes
"I was so glad to experience them, but I'm just so glad they're over. It hit me on that week . . . I was like, 'Oh, holy sh*t! This is like, a worldwide thing! People are gonna be watching.' And people in my family started hyping it up like, 'Oh my God! What's the dress?' It hit me in a major way. But being there, I felt like I was just surrounded by all the people that I love. Heroes. And of course I always feel out of place, so it was just like, a voyeuristic experience if anything.
"I loved Tracee Ellis Ross's speech. That was also like, 'Thank God!' 'cause she knew I didn't have anything prepared. I wasn't gonna be able to do that. And then I love Meryl [Streep], hands down. I think that she's just such a responsible artist and I admire that."
On the Women Who Taught Her to Be a "Boss-Ass B*tch"
"I was at dinner with Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Debbie Allen, and Mara Brock Akil; these women that I shared an Essence cover with. I was in a pivotal [career] moment, where I was just trying to decide whether I should put my foot down. And they each told their individual stories about being in my exact position and how putting their foot down is what led them to being where they are today.
"It was just like, I'm sitting at this table with these boss-ass women and I'm being hesitant about whether I should put my foot down about something that clearly isn't right for me. If I'm even questioning this, then I don't deserve to be at this table, and I'll never get to their level. So it was just a very enlightening moment for me, where I was like, if I wanna be a boss-ass b*tch, I have to do boss-ass b*tch things!"
On Whether She Feels Pressure to Represent Black Stories
"I didn't feel the pressure because I made it clear that we're telling a very specific black story. I was kinda alleviated of that pressure because there were so many other shows out there. I was like, 'Oh, this won't be an issue, because if people aren't messing with our show, then they'll watch Queen Sugar, or Being Mary Jane.' Still, despite me saying that this is a specific story, despite there being other options, I did get some backlash. How me and my friends are, and what is this saying about black women. You can't win either way."
On the Current State of Diversity in Movies and on TV
"It's such a small world and such a small community, but it does feel like we're taking the reins ourselves in so many ways. And that seems promising. Even just the changing of the guard behind the scenes that feels, first of all, inevitable. It feels so necessary, and people are demanding alternative stories at this point, so it feels refreshing. Whereas before, I was a little bit hesitant and skeptical - like, 'Oh, is this just gonna be a trend?' But you're really seeing a shift happening, and I think in this political climate now, people more than ever are demanding those new voices."
On Whether the Show Will Get More Political Post-Election
"I think it'll get as political as real conversations do. That's as far as we'll go; like, how you talk to your friends about it. We also don't want it to feel dated in a way. We want to be topical without being, like, we watch this 10 years from now - four years from now! - and we're like, 'Remember when Trump was president? That was crazy.'"
On How Split Fans Were Over the First Season Finale
"I love how divided people were, I wasn't expecting that, and I love, love, love it. That's real life. When anybody makes a decision, people are split. That is something that we want to continue to embrace moving forward."

During His Final Days in Office, President Obama Ended This 1 Cuban Immigration Policy
In one of his final changes as the president of the United States, Barack Obama has ended the 1995 "wet foot, dry foot" policy granting Cubans who arrive in the United States without a visa a permanent resident status. The two-decade-long policy, applying only to Cubans, said that if someone was caught in the water migrating to the United States (with "wet feet"), they would be sent back to Cuba, but those who made it to land (with "dry feet") would be allowed to stay in the country.
By ending this exemption for Cuban migrants, which is effective immediately, Obama wants to give all people the same opportunities to become a citizen in the United States and discourage Cubans from making the dangerous and illegal trip to the US by water.
"By taking this step, we are treating Cuban migrants the same way we treat migrants from other countries," Obama said in a statement on Jan. 12. "The United States, a land of immigrants, has been enriched by the contributions of Cuban-Americans for more than a century. Since I took office, we have put the Cuban-American community at the center of our policies. With this change we will continue to welcome Cubans as we welcome immigrants from other nations, consistent with our laws."
The statement also says that "the Cuban government has agreed to accept the return of Cuban nationals who have been ordered removed, just as it has been accepting the return of migrants interdicted at sea."

Meet Sturgill Simpson, the Country Singer Going Up Against Beyoncé and Adele at the Grammys
Looking over the 2017 Grammy nominees, you'll see names like Adele, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Sia, and Ariana Grande. Then, there's Sturgill Simpson. While he's well-known in the country genre, he's not a household name - yet. Not only is he going up against Adele, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, and Drake for album of the year (in addition to country album of the year), he's the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend. That said, it's time to get to know the singer!
While Kentucky-born Simpson formed his first band, Sunday Valley, in 2004, he gained critical attention with his solo album, High Top Mountain, released in 2013. His second album, 2014's Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, did even better, peaking at No. 11 on Billboard's Top Country Albums list. A Sailor's Guide to Earth, the album that earned Simpson his Grammy nomination, was released in April and has been climbing the charts. The 1 Thing Camila Alves Does to Keep Her Family's Hectic Mornings Under Control
Just watching Camila Alves describe the whirlwind of chaos that comes with getting three kids ages 8 and under - Levi, 8, Vida, 7, and Livingston, 4 - ready for school each morning is enough to leave you gasping for air. With her hands rapidly moving through the air, her tempo dramatically increases as she talks about her family's morning routine and the steps she's taken to bring some order to the mayhem. "I have a wild 4-year-old so I don't know what's going to happen," she says. "I have no choice. When I don't [follow my routine], trust me, it's not worth it."
Her routine is one that moms everywhere can follow to make their mornings run more smoothly. It involves making sure the kids get a good night's sleep and going to bed at a consistent time each night ("If not, it doesn't matter what tricks you have, they're not going to work," she advises); picking out their clothes the night before ("Set [them] up away from the closet and away from their drawers where they can change their mind."); packing their bags the night before ("They get the autonomy of doing it themselves and that creates that habit of preparing for things."); and making their lunches and filling their water bottles the night before.
It's such prep work that keeps the Alves-McConaughey family running smoothly. Camila spends most of the day each Sunday cooking and preparing meals for the week. It isn't because she loves cooking (which she does), but it's because she's in survival mode during the week. "Is it a pain in the behind that you sit there for almost half a day prepping stuff like that? Yes," she says. "But it makes your whole week so easy. I'm here [in Las Vegas] now, so I cooked yesterday. I left them what's for dinner tonight. Matthew can now go and put it together himself."
Matthew is Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey. It was Matthew's film schedule that led Camila to her latest venture, Yummy Spoonfuls brand of frozen organic baby foods. "It really started from frustration," she explains. "We were in Calgary, in the middle of nowhere, living in a trailer, and I was making baby food at three in the morning. Bowls of purées were everywhere. The little kitchen was filled up with dishes to wash. I was trying to figure out the flavors, making little pouches, and I thought, 'Baby's going to wake up for a next feed in a few and in the morning I'm going to have all three kids on my own and I'm not getting any sleep. Why is it so hard to open the freezer door and find the most pure form of food?'"
After some research, a friend put her in touch with Agatha Achindu who had already been working on the Yummy Spoonfuls brand, but had yet to take it national. The two joined forces and before long, the pouches of pure organic purées made their way to the freezer section at Target. "We do it just like you do at home," Camila says. "We start with real fruits and vegetables. We lightly cook them. Then we purée, then we freeze them. Just like homemade. We're making homemade food without the mess."
Though all of her kids still eat the purées (Vida's favorite flavor, pear, will soon be added to the line), they're also big fans of mom's Brazilian traditions. She shares many of those recipes, like her slow-cooker version of Brazilian-style Chicken Stroganoff and Pão de Queijo on her Women of Today site.

CA: Birth. There's no easy way to give birth, for me. If people do it, I don't know how they do. I just got really unlucky.
