These Comics About New-Mom Struggles Will Get You Through the Day

When most parents put their babies to bed at the end of the night, they usually veg out in front of the TV or pass out themselves. As for Bonnie Kimmerly? She pulls out her sketchbook and draws cartoons that highlight the day-to-day ridiculousness that is new motherhood.

"I first started drawing parenting cartoons while I was on maternity leave as a creative outlet," she told POPSUGAR. "Believe it or not, I manage to find the energy. It's definitely not easy."

Her cartoons - which cover the struggles associated with breastfeeding and baby-wearing, bizarre toddler quirks, and head-scratching interactions with complete strangers - are all based on her personal experiences, but it wasn't long before she realized how universal they really were.

"I hope new moms are able to relate to these situations and find some humor and relief in knowing they are not alone," she said. "Being a new parent can be stressful . . . remember to appreciate the little things!"

Read through to see some of Bonnie's hilarious comics, order her darling ebook of musings from her son's first year, and keep on appreciating those little things!

Confession: I'm a Woman and I Shave My Face

Source: Corbis Images

I can't believe I'm putting this out on the Internet. And at the risk of never getting a date ever again in this lifetime, here it goes: I shave my face. (Never thought Caroline Manzo and I would have something in common, but alas!)

To kick things off, no, I don't stand in front of the mirror with some Barbasol and a Mach3 and get to work. (I know some of you are envisioning a pile of shaving cream on my face.) In fact, no shaving cream is used at all. Let me explain . . .

I grew up with blond lip hair. (I guess you could call it a mustache, but I try to avoid it at all costs.) I was horrified about it. As a teen, I didn't deal with terrible acne (that came later in life - yay hormones!) but instead was bestowed with a patch of blond hair on my upper lip. Sure, all gals have a little bit of fuzz on their upper lips. No big deal. But it wasn't peach fuzz - it was very noticeable. And I was ready to do whatever it took to get rid of my furry friend staring me in the face every morning.

I tried every removal process in the book, starting with Nair. I ended up burning my skin, which put my upper lip even more in the spotlight. After banning the pink cream, I tried threading and waxing, only to have my skin break out in pustules. This deterred me from wanting to remove facial hair, so I went ahead and opted to bleach the sucker. Considering it was blond, that didn't help. At 18, I opted for laser hair removal. It worked okay, but then I went off to college and didn't finish my sessions, so the hair grew back.

But one day in 2011, at the ripe age of 23, I'm perusing YouTube and see a video from Bachelor in Paradise's Michelle Money. She's a cosmetologist and posted a video about shaving her face. Have you seen this woman? She's stunning. I can't imagine she deals with any type of beauty crisis, but she and her friends explained why shaving their faces was not only fun, but also necessary, and then they showed a tutorial. Seeing their fuzz scrape right off their faces led me into an online rabbit hole.

I have to say that I disagree with the girls on one thing: if you have facial hair and it doesn't bother you, get on with your bad self. Removing facial hair isn't mandatory. For me, it was something I wanted but didn't think was possible. Was shaving my face an option? Would it grow back black? Am I about to secure the role as a bearded woman on American Horror Story? (Time travel?)

Scouring the Internet, I found that Kate Somerville was a proponent of facial shaving. You mean to tell me that the queen of clear, youthful skin is down with shaving shenanigans? She told Style.com that Elizabeth Taylor's cosmetic dermatologist disclosed that Elizabeth shaved her face, as did Marilyn Monroe and Cleopatra. It makes your makeup go on smoother, gives you a glow, and because it's a razor, you're physically exfoliating your skin - great for antiaging! Why do you think men look so youthful as they age? They shave a majority of their lives!

Here's the thing: Facial shaving for women isn't news. In fact, dermaplaning is the fancier option that spas offer to help take off a layer of dead skin. In addition to removing those baby hairs, it also helps products absorb into your skin better. It gives you a gorgeous glow and in turn, your fuzz is gone.

Michelle suggested buying a razor called The Tinkle. You have to order them online (and that name is rather embarrassing), so I ventured to Sally Beauty Supply, bought a pack of Touch N Brow razors, and went for it. I shaved my jawline, upper lip, under my chin, and my forehead. I even cleaned up the hair by my ears. And you know what? IT WAS AWESOME. I couldn't stop touching my face. (I wouldn't suggest touching your face all the time, but in this case, it was unavoidable.) I get so many compliments on my skin that when I reveal this secret, people go from pure shock to running to the store and buying their own razors.

So . . . questions. I know you have them. I'll try to cover everything I usually get asked:

1. Does it hurt?
Nope. Not a bit. Just make sure you get the right razor and hold it correctly. (More on that later.)

2. But doesn't it grow back thicker and darker?
No. Come on now, we know this is a fallacy regarding our legs - same for your face. It doesn't grow back black or stubbly! It actually comes back blond and soft. The hair on my face was never black or stubbly, thus it will not grow back that way.

3. How often do you have to do this?
I shave once or twice a week, and I don't mind - it's a part of my antiaging regimen now.

4. What products do I need?
You need one tool: a razor. I use a single-edge, single-blade razor that has a slope to the head of the razor. The Tinkle (such an unfortunate name) and the Touch N Brow ($5) are great options. If the razor is shaped straight up and down with no curve to the razor head, you risk cutting yourself. Also, some of the facial/eyebrow razors I've come across have sharp, blunt edges - so again, look for razors that are curved.

5. What about a leg razor?
Honey - no. Don't use your leg razor. Put down the Venus! I haven't tried it, and I can guarantee you won't want to dabble into it, either.

6. So . . . no other products?
Do this on dry skin. No need to wet your skin or use lotion.

7. What's the technique here?
Pull the skin taut, then start shaving downward on your skin in short strokes. You can't just drag the razor against your skin - it wouldn't do anything. Also, hold the razor at a 45-degree angle against the skin. Don't freak when it looks like you skinned a lamb. You have more hair on your face than you think!

8. Any postshaving tips?
Moisturize afterwards. Shaving means taking a layer of dead skin off your face. It's exfoliating! Moisturize afterwards so your skin doesn't get too dry.

I can't stress this enough: only do this if you're comfortable. It's like waxing or any other form of hair removal. You'll need to maintain it! If you're under the age of 18, talk to your parent before. These face razors aren't incredibly sharp, but you'll want to be safe.

So, take it from me, Caroline Manzo, and Kate Somerville: facial shaving is the new(ish) chemical peel.

Shakira's Performance of "Ojos Así" at the First Latin Grammys Was Nothing Short of Steamy

Shakira's performance of "Ojos Así" at the 2000 Latin Grammy Awards had everything: shirtless men, belly dancing, a sexy outfit, powerful vocals, and even fire! The Colombian singer brought out all the stops for the first-ever award show, where she won two gramophones. And just in case, like us, you have no concept of how fast time flies, this was 17 years ago - we repeat, 17 years ago! - back when she was still only singing in Spanish and had just a few hits under her belt.

Even then, after this night, there was no doubt in our minds that Shakira was going to continue to impress us with her performances for many years to come. Watch the full performance above.

5 Things You Shouldn't Waste Time on During Your Pregnancy

I'm a worrier. It's no surprise - it comes along with being a planner. It's what we do. We try to plan the unplannable, to imagine the unimaginable, and to control the uncontrollable.

That control one is a biggie. A wise friend told me while I was pregnant with my first baby that the cutting of the umbilical cord is just the first step in a long series of actions of letting go. To be a parent is to give up more and more control and let things happen, hoping that you've laid the groundwork for something spectacular.

This can be a freeing thing, though, not just a sad or hard act of letting go. And you can start early - as soon as during pregnancy - so let's take some stuff off your to-do list, shall we?

Here are some things you don't need to waste your time on while waiting for your baby to arrive.

1. Buying New Stuff

You won't believe the things you can find second-hand or get for cheap off a listserv. Once your baby is born, people will bring you presents. If they have slightly older children, they'll likely also bring you bags of stuff they can't wait to get out of their homes. You will only use it all for a hot minute anyway, so don't worry about it all being brand new.

As someone whose kids went through a collective total of five different types of baby swings, without either kid ever actually enjoying said baby swings, it's not worth spending a fortune on gadgets. Same with clothing. They grow so fast and spit up so much! It's fun to splurge on a few outfits you love, but in general, any old weather-appropriate thing will do the job, for the 10 minutes your kid will wear it before pooping all over it.

2. Setting Up the "Perfect Nursery"

First of all, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends "infants to share their parents' bedroom for at least the first six months and, optimally, for the first year of life, based on the latest evidence." So that gorgeous color scheme you worked out? It might not see any action for quite some time. (Neither will you, but that's another story! Just kidding! Kind of!)

Even when your child is ready to move into their own room, the dream nursery you envisioned might not fit your particular baby. That antique rocking chair might get kicked out in favor of a couch because you or your partner might need to sleep in the baby's room sometimes. Maybe the baby only nurses lying down and you need an extra bed in there. Maybe they'll hate the crib and want a mattress on the floor. Don't get too attached to your Pinterest board. When you discover that one, magic thing that gets your kid to sleep through the night consistently, you won't care what it makes the nursery look like!

3. Obsessing Over a Birth Plan

It's good to have one. You should definitely think about how you'd like the birth to go in general. Do you want an epidural? How do you feel about episiotomy? Do you want to walk around during labor? Maybe be able to labor in a shower or tub? All good things to think about. But remember, you might have to throw all those plans out the window. I had grand plans of laboring on a yoga ball and smelling lavender essential oils, but my first baby came so fast there was no time for any of that. You just never know, so it's good to keep all your options open, mentally.

4. Worrying Too Much About Gender

After thinking that I'd pretty much mastered mothering a girl the first time around, I was shocked to find my second was going to be a boy. I felt like everything I'd done, learned, and known about raising a girl was going to be thrown out the window, and having a boy was going to be like starting over from scratch.

Um, first of all, that's ridiculous. A baby is a baby is a baby. And yet, they're all different, so even had I had another girl, I would have been starting from scratch in a way regardless. I have now learned that a) I had not mastered mothering a girl. No one has mastered mothering anyone. Plus, kids are always changing, so if I'd mastered anything, it was raising my particular girl at that particular stage of life. And b) I previously put way too much emphasis on gender! It's not even a real thing! It's an "easy" label society gives out. My kids happen to have different genitalia, but that all has very little to do with their different personalities, likes, dislikes, experiences, and dispositions. Yep, we're all snowflakes.

Bottom line: I know plenty of quiet boys and wild girls. "Tomboys" and boys who hate sports. Girls with short hair and boys who wear tutus. So don't spend too much time planning out pink sparkly outfits or football jerseys. Keep an open mind and plan to get to know your new bundle of joy as an individual.

5. Listening to Other People's Advice

Including mine. Trust me, it great to collect anecdotes and it's wise to read books and do research. But at the end of the day, just because the woman down the block swears by her breast pump doesn't mean it'll be the one for you. Just because your mother-in-law loved pushing her kid in a stroller every day for naps doesn't mean you (or your baby) will like that. My second kid didn't ever want to get out of the ergo carrier, so we barely used a stroller the second time even though our first kid had loved it.

Take it all in and then keep an open mind.

You Can Ripen an Avocado Faster With These 2 Kitchen Essentials

There's nothing worse than browsing your supermarket's avocado stash only to find out that not. a. single. one is ripe. Before you raise your hands in an angry fury, stop! We have a pro tip, straight from the folks at the Hass Avocado Board: place your not-quite-ready-yet avo inside a brown paper bag with an apple or a banana for two to three days. It's that easy.

Why It Works

"The plant hormone ethylene, which occurs naturally in fruits like apples and bananas, triggers the ripening process. When combined in a brown paper bag, which helps to trap the ethylene gases produced by these fruits, these gases can cause the fruits to ripen faster together."

And with that, go forth and snag all those unripe avocados, because they'll be guacamole-ready faster than you thought. If only there was this simple of a solution for all the other struggles avocado-lovers face.

13 Times Kate Middleton Made Running in Heels Look Like a Piece of Cake

The duchess of Cambridge is a very modern royal mom, a picture-perfect princess, and a globetrotting charity ambassador, but she also has a very special skill that has flown slightly under the radar. No matter what she does or where she goes, she often does it in heels. Most mortals would do themselves a damage if they tried to run on the beach in towering wedges, or would warrant at least a tiny wobble when trying to master archery in a pair of stilettos, but not Kate.

6 Places Kate Middleton Lived Before Becoming a Princess

Kate Middleton hasn't always resided in a 10-bedroom country estate or 21-room apartment at Kensington Palace. Long before meeting and marrying Prince William, Kate was just a regular girl who moved around with her family, studied abroad, lived in college dorms, and even shared a flat with her little sister. Here are all the places Kate lived before her life became a royal one.

  1. Berkshire, England: Kate was born to parents Michael and Carole Middleton at the ironically named Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. The upper-middle-class family lived in a modest, brick Victorian "with a cramped kitchen" in Bradfield Southend. They later purchased at Oak Acre, a five-bedroom Tudor-style country house in nearby Bucklebury, Berkshire.
  2. Amman, Jordan: While working as a flight dispatcher for British Airways, Michael and his family were relocated to Jordan. Kate lived there from 1984 to 1987.
  1. Wiltshire, England: Kate studied at Marlborough College, a coed boarding school, in 1996.
  2. Florence, Italy: After finishing her studies at Marlborough, 18-year-old Kate headed to Florence to study Italian and art history. She completed a three-month course at the British Institute of Florence in Palazzo dello Strozzino.
  3. Fife, Scotland: In 2001, Kate moved to Scotland to study at the University of St. Andrews and lived in three areas of on-campus student housing. It was at one of them, St Salvator's Hall, that she met Prince William. She went on to graduate with a master's degree in art history.
  4. London, England: Postcollege, Kate accepted a position as an accessory buyer with British retailer Jigsaw and moved into a flat in London's exclusive Chelsea neighborhood with her sister Pippa; Carole and Michael Middleton purchased the apartment in 2002 for all three of their children to live in. Pippa continued to reside there with their brother James well after Kate married Will and moved to a four-bedroom farmhouse on the Welsh island of Anglesey.

7 Things You Have to Know About Nintendo's New Console - It's a Game Changer, Literally!

It's finally here - the Nintendo Switch, the company's newest game console that is everything you could ever dream of. At an event held on Jan. 12 in Tokyo, Japan, the company revealed all the details you could possibly want to know about the device. Trust us - it's more information than we saw in the preview video of it last year. The Nintendo Switch is a mix of all its previous generations, from the Game Boy to the Wii U, with features from each gaming system. Keep reading to see what the console is all about.

  • Hardware: There are three components to the Switch game system: Switch dock, Switch console, and Joy-Con grip that includes the left and right Joy-Con controllers. At first, the Nintendo Switch looks like a regular console and can be connected to your TV for play. But you can remove the Switch from its dock and attach the Joy-Con controllers to each side for on-the-go play. An AC adapter and HDMI cable will also be included.
  • Controllers: There are two detachable Joy-Con controllers that you can keep on the console or remove and play with. Each Joy-Con fits naturally in the palm of your hand and has an analog stick that can also be pressed like a button. The left controller can even take screenshots of your game that you can later share.
  • Play styles: Users can play with the Switch like a typical video game in TV mode, stand the device on its kickstand to play with the controllers away from the TV in tabletop mode, or play in handheld mode. "Share the Joy" in two-player games and let a friend use one of the controllers as their own.
  • Games: 1-2 Switch (released at the same time as the system) is a mini game collection unlike anything you've ever seen before. Instead of watching a screen to play as you normally would, 1-2 Switch requires face-to-face interaction. You look directly at your opponent to play against each other. Arms (out in Spring 2017) is a fighting sports game similar to boxing in which you use extendable arms in the game to battle. Players can play against each other with two consoles. Among the 80 games already in development, the highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be released March 3 as a launch title and Super Mario Odyssey will be released holiday 2017.
  • Online gaming: Connect your smart phone device to the Switch app for online multiplayer gaming. Invite friends to play online, chat with them, and set play appointments, all from your phone.
  • Battery life: Each game varies, but battery life ranges from two and a half hours to six. The device can be charged by portable batteries or by the AC adapter. You can also play while charging.
  • Price: $300

Preorders begin Jan. 21 and the Nintendo Switch is officially out on March 3, 2017, in Japan, the US, Canada, major European countries, Hong Kong, and other territories.

Below, you can see a video of the Nintendo Switch in action.

You Will Shamelessly Stare at 2 Things in These Austin Swift Photos: His Eyes and His Lips

Jemima Kirke and husband Michael Mosberg have split after seven years of marriage. Us Weekly confirmed their divorce on Thursday, saying that the 31-year-old Girls star actually called it quits with the former lawyer back in the Summer of 2016. Although the reason for their breakup is unclear, a source revealed that Michael was seen on the exclusive dating app Raya - used by celebrities like John Mayer and Chelsea Handler - as early as July. They tied the knot in 2009 after meeting during one of Jemima's rehab stays in her 20s, and share two children; Rafaella, 6, and Memphis, 4. Jemima was also stepmother to Michael's son and daughter from a previous relationship.

10 Movies to Watch If You're Obsessed With La La Land

One of the biggest breakout hits of 2016, La La Land has received critical acclaim and been nominated for over 100 awards from different organizations, including two SAG award nominations and a whopping seven Golden Globe wins, including best actor, best actress, best screenplay, and best director. At this rate, it will undoubtedly dominate the Oscars as well.

Mia is an aspiring actress who rushes to audition after audition, only to be brushed off by executives. Sebastian is a talented pianist who struggles to keep the Jazz Age alive. This Is the Hot New Shoe You've Been Seeing at the Gym (and All Over Instagram)

Activewear has been getting more and more fashion-forward - and sneakers have followed suit. While many of us used to hit the gym in an old college t-shirt, beat-up shoes, and a pair of baggy shorts, it's now a rarity to see someone in anything other than runway-ready athletic styles. But do these trend-focused pieces hold up for exercise?

That was my concern when I went to order a pair of APLs. If you haven't heard of them yet, you've likely seen them - those low-profile, subtly branded sneakers that have been taking over Instagrams everywhere (and they're one of Oprah's favorite things from 2016!). APLs caught my eye when I noticed a friend wearing them last Summer, and I couldn't identify the brand. "Those aren't Nikes. . . . They're not Adidas. . . . What . . ?" As someone who can typically pinpoint a make, model, and year of sneakers, I was stunned and knew I had to get my hands on a pair.

My first thought? "They're probably not that functional, but they're so damn cute I have to get them anyway." Boy, was I wrong. Look - I'm not a running-shoe snob, but I have my favorites that I've gravitated toward over the past two and a half years of my journey, with five half marathons and a handful of five, 10, and 15Ks thrown in there. Though I typically wear a thicker stability shoe, I was wildly impressed with these low-profile APLs. In fact, they're my new fitness gear obsession. Here's my experience with (and details on) the TechLoom Phantom Pro model.

Fit and Feel

  • Super soft, cushioned, and comfortable
  • In my experience, they had to be broken in a little
  • Sock-like upper that you slide into, with a snug, secure fit (you should still wear socks, though)
  • Upper feels like a wetsuit - it's neoprene
  • Laces don't make a huge difference in how snug they fit
  • They run small - I'm a 5.5 in Adidas, 5.5 to 6 in most Nikes, and these were snug at a 6. Nordstrom recommends ordering a size up; I'd recommend ordering a half-size up.
  • They're so snug that after a while, they press down (and indent) the top of my feet. This is after hours of wear.

Specs

  • "8mm drop from the heel to the forefoot" (meaning, there's 8 mm more cushion in the heel than there is in the toe area). Moderate to minimalist shoes have anywhere between a 4 and 10 mm drop.
  • 4-way stretch upper
  • "Proprietary Athletic Propulsion Labs Propelium midsole/outsole" - less rubber, less weight
  • 7.9 ounces: very light, but not featherweight

Functionality

For running: I've worn my TechLoom Phantom Pro APLs on several runs; my longest run was about five miles. It was a nice, neutral ride - more stability and cushion than an Nike Free, but much closer to a barefoot run than a stability shoe like Brooks Adrenaline; a supportive sweet spot, really. They were also pretty springy, light, and soft but still had a controlled and stable feel. I'd recommend them for shorter training runs if you don't need a lot of support. I do need more support for longer distances, so I'll probably switch to something with a slightly more cushioned outsole and a bit more arch support when I start tacking on miles for training.

For training: It's important to note that this specific shoe model is intended for running and that wearing running shoes to weightlift and train can be unsafe, especially if the heel is really cushioned. That said, I found the APL Phantom Techloom Pro's outsole and heel cushioning to be extremely similar to my Nike Free Transform Flyknit trainers. So I gave them a go in Barry's Bootcamp, in Speedplay, and a few other classes at Equinox. To be honest, I've never felt more comfortable; I felt as supported running as I did lifting dumbbells, doing box jumps, and squatting with barbells. These are the ideal shoes for a mixed format class like Barry's, Speedplay, or Orangetheory (which have you running on a treadmill for part of class), one of 2017's big workout trends. If you're planning on trying a class that involves running, APLs are perfect.

For everyday: APLs are great shoes for walking around, so you'll want to mix them into your everyday active or athleisure looks. As mentioned in the fit and feel review, if I wear these for several hours, the top of the shoe indents my foot and can become uncomfortable, so I'd recommend them for shorter wear.

Giada’s Ingenious Hack Will Change the Way You Eat Leftover Spaghetti

A Broccoli Soup Richened With Greek Yogurt, Not Cream

Michael Keaton Profusely Apologizes For His "Hidden Fences" Flub at the Golden Globes

At the 2017 Golden Globes, a strange thing happened: people kept mixing up the movies Hidden Figures and Fences, both films with predominantly black casts. First Jenna Bush made the red carpet gaffe while interviewing Pharrell Williams, and later on Michael Keaton mistakenly called out Octavia Spencer for her work in "Hidden Fences" (she stars in Hidden Figures) while presenting the award for best supporting actress in a motion picture at the 74th annual ceremony. The flub was instantly picked up by commentators on social media, who noticed that it seemed to be a recurring mistake throughout the night (you can watch the awkward moment as it unfolded in the video above).

Like Jenna before him, Michael has reached out with a heartfelt apology for his actions. "I'm very, very sorry about that. I feel very badly," Keaton told Us Weekly at the premiere of his new biopic, The Founder. "I get that people thought I was nonchalant about it . . . I get it now." He went on to add that he had no idea what had even happened at first. "At the time, I thought, I don't know what people are talking about . . . since then, people have told me, 'Well, people are upset for this other reason.' That truly makes me feel horrible now. I feel badly that people feel badly."

The Hollywood icon's mistake ended up being one of many awkward moments at the Golden Globes this year, but he wanted to emphasize that it was not done out of malice. "I'm very sorry for the people that were affected by that," he said. "Especially the people in the movie, who worked so hard, and in front of millions of people, I, like a jerk, screwed the line up. What I always think about is they have brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers and friends at home waiting for them, watching them, and this guy, me, gets up and gives the wrong title! That makes me feel terrible."

What This Inspiring Teacher Does For His Students Will Restore Your Faith in Humanity

Ellen DeGeneres continues to prove she has a heart of gold. On Jan. 12, the talk show host surprised a special guest on her show, a second grade teacher at South Greenville Elementary in North Carolina. Michael Bonner has helped raise his students' test scores by creating catchy rap songs as a way to connect and get his students engaged with the learning material.

"When I came to South Greenville, the school was so bad at one point in time that we used to meet in class and pray before the day," Michael shared about his efforts to turn the poverty-stricken school around.

His teaching style has left a major impact on the kids and earned him a standing ovation from the audience, including from Ellen herself. "You are amazing," Ellen told him before delivering yet another big surprise for Michael and his students.

Robin Thicke Investigated For Alleged Child Abuse Amid Custody Battle With Paula Patton

Paula Patton filed for divorce from then-husband Robin Thicke back in 2014, and it looks like their legal battles are far from over. The former couple shares a 6-year-old son, Julian, and on Thursday it was revealed that the "Blurred Lines" singer is being investigated for alleged child abuse by the Los Angeles County Department of Child and Family Services in connection to his and Paula's ongoing custody battle. According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly, Julian reportedly told school officials that his father "spanked him more than once," leading to them getting the DCFS involved on Jan. 3. The organization has interviewed Julian as part of their investigation and was scheduled to talk to Robin on Thursday afternoon.

This reportedly resulted in the Warcraft actress barring Robin access to their son and filing an emergency order with a judge to limit his time with Julian to supervised visits during the day only. The Grammy nominee maintains that the only thing that happened was a "light spanking," according to the court documents. "On a very rare occasion and only as a last resort, I will use light spanking, but it is consistent with the law -- open hand on the butt," he said. Robin then goes on to claim the entire incident is rooted in Paula's anger at not being invited to the funeral of Robin's late father, Alan Thicke, in December. "It is my belief that Paula holds residual anger towards me because I and my family would not permit her or her family to attend the funeral of my father on December 20, 2016," he alleged. "Paula did not have a positive relationship with my father. . . . As such, she was not welcome at his funeral. It is my belief that Paula only wanted to attend because it would have resulted in additional public exposure for her." After the Growing Pains star passed, Paula shared a moving message about him on Instagram.

A source told Us Weekly that a "judge denied everything in [Patton's] complaint" and that "Child Protective Services didn't see any evidence of wrongdoing." We will update this post with further information as it becomes available.

Mars's Curiosity Rover Honored Obama's Legacy in the Coolest Way

On Jan. 12, NASA's Curiosity rover tweeted out an epic photo of the way it has honored President Barack Obama's presidency: by delivering his signature to Mars!

"Signed, sealed, delivered. I carried @POTUS's signature to the surface of #Mars." a tweet from the official Curiosity rover account tweeted. The kind gesture is also a historic one, as it is the first time a United States president has ever had his signature on the red planet. In a separate statement on its official website, NASA revealed the photo of Barack Obama's signature was taken in 2012.

The 44th president wasn't the only one who received the special honor. Vice President Joe Biden's signature was also delivered on a plaque to Mars and will remain there for years to come. "The rectangular plaque is made of anodized aluminum," the website noted, adding that the president and vice president's signatures were "affixed to the rover's deck with four bolts."

President Obama responded to NASA on Twitter, calling the plaque "out of this world." Check out his full response below, which just might be his final dad joke as president.

5 Things La La Land Gets Right About LA

Though your attention might be drawn to the romance between Sebastian and Mia (or just Sebastian - no shame), La La Land's real romance is with the city of Los Angeles. It's the city where the sun is always shining and your barista is probably an aspiring actress. Or singer. Or something. What else did La La Land get right? Well, for starters . . .

1. The Traffic

The film takes its sweet time before getting you to the glitz and glam of Hollywood. The opening scene takes place in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the EZ pass lane connecting the 110 and 105 freeways, which was actually shut down twice for the cast and crew's use (imagine how happy Angelenos were those days). Time and time again, Los Angeles has claimed the top spot for worst traffic in the country. Studies revealed that residents in the LA/Long Beach/Santa Ana region spent more than 81 hours in idle traffic in the year 2015, and 2016 lived up to such expectations. It's no wonder those who live in SoCal named traffic their top concern over housing, retirement, and, oh, personal safety. Yikes.

2. The Weather

Or, well, lack thereof. If it weren't for the seasonal titles throughout, you'd have no idea how much time is passing between scenes. And although sprawling "Winter" out over a sunny, palm tree-filled backdrop is meant to be funny, it's seriously true. 75 and sunny year-round? Probably why Mia's almost exclusively in darling dresses that are reminiscent of the '50s. Just another day of sun. And another . . . And another . . .

3. Diversity

Although the film received some criticism for having a white male lead attempting to revive jazz (a primarily African-American genre), overall there's a large amount of diversity within the cast. The opening musical number alone explores this exciting and truly cosmopolitan aspect of Los Angeles. The "anyone can make it here!" message might be a tad stale, but the key here is that it includes anyone.

4. The Griffith Observatory

Partway through the movie, Gosling and Stone's characters take a romantic stroll through the Griffith Observatory. Though the planetarium in the film was recreated on a set, the rest of the location is entirely real, and it's a major attraction for both tourists and locals. Open to the public, it includes an observatory, planetarium, and exhibition space. This, unsurprisingly, helps make it the most-visited public observatory in the world. You may not be able to dance through thin air with Gosling, but you'll get some of the best and most famous views in the city.

5. The Rich Cinematic History

Director Damien Chazelle said it best in an interview with The Verge: "Living in LA, you live in a city that is full of movie history. Everywhere you turn, there's an echo of this glorified movie past." Whether it's Sunset Boulevard, Venice Beach, or Runyon Canyon Park, Los Angeles is a city immersed in the glory days of movies past.

Research Shows This Is How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off

The weight-loss news making headlines these days is anything but hopeful. The recent article in New York Times detailing the inability of many Biggest Loser contestants to maintain their slimmed-down physiques after working so hard and so publically to lose hundreds of collective pounds was demoralizing. But we don't want you to give up hope. We don't want you to give up your goals. We don't want you to throw in the towel. Remember, recent research has shown that when treating health conditions related to obesity, dropping five percent of total bodyweight had powerful health gains. So every little bit counts!

Losing weight is challenging, but the true test is clearly keeping it off, and this is research can help. The National Weight Control Registery was established by two doctors in 1994 to track the success and methods of people who have lost significant amounts of weight (at least 30 pounds) and maintained this weight loss for at least a year. Over 10,000 individuals have participated in the study via questionnaires and the NWCR has a lot (like a lot, A LOT) of data on maintaining weight loss. The group is really transparent that there is no one method to losing weight: some respondents lost weight slowly and others quickly; some dieted on their own while others joined programs. But there are some stats that point toward helpful habits that have worked for the majority of study participants. And while none of these findings are new or earth-shattering, they are all completely doable. And this gives us hope.

Breakfast

It really might be the most important meal of the day if you're trying to lose weight; 78 percent of the study participants eat breakfast every day. Starting your day with a protein-rich meal wakes up your metabolism so you start burning calories after sleeping. According to the dieticians at C & J Nutrition, a weight-loss-promoting breakfast should contain 13 to 20 grams of protein.

The Scale

Checking in with the scale is an important part of the maintaining weight loss and 75 percent of the study participants weigh themselves at least once a week. Tracking weight-loss efforts by weighing yourself regularly - up to three times a week - can keep you motivated to stay on your diet and continue altering your eating habits. But just once weekly can help you keep of the pounds off. It is normal for weight to fluctuate over the course of week, but steadily increasing numbers on the scale act as a reminder to recommit to the healthy habits that helped you drop the pounds.

TV Time

We often hear that sitting for long periods of time is as dangerous as smoking, and being a couch potato doesn't help keep off the weight either. Sixty-two percent of respondents watch under 10 hours of TV weekly, which is about 50 percent less than the national average. While we don't know what they are doing with their time away from the TV, chances are they are moving at least a bit, which can help with weight maintenance. Every calorie you burn counts! One healthy lifestyle habit that can prevent TV binging (and the food binging that often accompanies those quality hours with Netflix) is that your TV time should determined by the amount of time you exercised that day: an hour-long workout equals an episode of Scandal, and a 30-minute run means you can watch a Brooklyn 99 episode.

Exercise Daily

Exercise is key to maintaining weight and 90 percent of the NWCR respondents move daily for at least an hour. This doesn't mean killer HIIT workouts, but something as simple as walking. Those 60 minutes of exercise don't need to be consecutive, either. You can break up your workouts so they fit into your busy life. Walking for 30 minutes at your lunch hour is a great way to fit movement into your life.

Gigi and Zayn Brought Their Matching Style All the Way to London

If you've ever had one of those unintentionally matchy-matchy moments with your SO, you're definitely not alone. Just look at Gigi and Zayn, for instance.

Whenever the model and singer are spotted out together, it's not uncommon for them to coordinate. He'll wear tee with bold, red details while she steps out in a red sweater. He'll opt for leather pants as she rocks a leather jacket. Ahead, check out a handful of times Gigi and Zayn made matching look anything but cheesy. Then, see how Gigi switched up her style according to who she was dating.
