How to Set Up a Private Home Theater, No Matter What Your Budget

A successful home theater system is a complete audio and visual experience. If you've got a big-screen-display-and-audio set ready to be installed, we'll show you how to set up a state-of-the-art home theater for any viewing party - or, with a little bit of accessorizing, tinkering, and feng shui rearrangement, how to create one with existing equipment.

The Home Theater Trifecta

  • TV display - You'll need a big screen to watch big events whether that is the year's biggest game or a red carpet bonanza. Large 60-inch 4K TV displays can cost a fortune, but there are solid smaller-size models that don't cost an arm and a leg, like the Samsung Smart LED TV ($350).
  • Cable or satellite - These days, you don't necessarily need a cable subscription to watch a huge show. FOX Sports will stream the Super Bowl for free - complete with the epic commercials. If you'd rather not stream, you can buy a basic antenna like the RCA Basic Indoor Antenna ($7, originally $10).
  • Surround sound - A good audio system can make you feel like you're in the audience. Ideally, a surround-sound experience needs two side speakers, two rear speakers, and one center front speaker. You can buy a complete theater sound set from Yamaha ($162) or fashion your own with existing speakers using a male-to-male audio cable, like this one from Mediabridge 3.5mm ($5, originally $15) and with an audio splitter, like the Belkin Splitter ($4).

Location, Location, Location

Choosing the right room can make all the difference. If you're mounting a display above the fireplace, make sure you know about the dangers. Consider these elements while setting up your system.

  • Floors - Your reclaimed cherry maple-wood flooring is beautiful, but it isn't ideal for sound quality. A room with bare tile or hardwood floors won't have great acoustics, but a large rug will aid in absorbing stray sounds.
  • Wall placement - The TV should be mounted or placed along the short wall of a rectangular room - and the barer, the better. Windows and doors are portals for sound to travel away from your audience. If you must place the display by a window, heavy curtains should do the trick.
  • Sound - Pull the seating area toward the center of the room, not against a wall, so that the rear speakers can project toward the viewing party.
  • Cables - Go easy on these guys. Don't force cables into 90-degree angles, allow them to gently curve in relaxed bends. Also, be wary when stapling audio or video cables to the walls and floors, and only use staples designed for use with a coaxial cable. The wrong staples will cut off circulation. We recommend raceway covers to do the job.

Maintenance

  • Dust - The enemy! Dust buildup can permanently damage your home electronics. So bust out that microfiber cloth and wipe down your devices as often as you can.
  • Surge protectors - Your prized home theater is one blackout away from being completely fried. Invest in a surge protector and plug everything (we mean, everything) into the surge-protected power distribution unit.
  • Space out the tech - Overheating is a common problem for large displays and complex audio systems. Make sure that the audio and video components have some room to breathe. Consult the device's manual if you're not sure how much clearance it needs.
  • Warranty documents - Most equipment has at least a 30-day warranty, and some high-end devices come with one-year or three-year guarantees. Hang on to these documents and the original boxes (we promise, you're not being a hoarder), because this will save you time and frustration if your equipment shuts down.

She expressed her excitement about the news on Twitter the day the nominations were announced.

Grey's Anatomy: 24 Alex Karev Moments That Are Unequivocally You

Despite the fact that Grey's Anatomy is all about the trials and tribulations of Dr. Meredith Grey, she can't always have the spotlight. In fact, over the course of the past 13 seasons, it's become quite clear that every other character in the cast has just as much depth as the titular Grey. Take Alex Karev, for example: the brooding hothead with a heart of gold has endured more than his fair share of heartbreak since the show's beginning - and, in the process, he's provided a veritable gold mine of very relatable moments.

Furthermore, the soundtrack will include a duet by John Legend and Ariana Grande and an original song by Celine Dion. The game is shutting down on March 29, after existing for 11 years. Don't know what Club Penguin is? It's a game like Neopets, where users can visit other worlds as a penguin. People absolutely loved the game, which explains the many reactions and memes of those who are devastated the game is going away. The 7 Most Important Jedi in the Star Wars Movies

In Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, Rey expresses sheer wonder and excitement when Han Solo tells her that the Jedi and the Force are real. She thought they were just myths! Grey's Anatomy Is About to Lose Another One of Its Doctors

Just when we were starting to get worried that Justin Chambers would leave Grey's Anatomy, the show blindsided us with a different departure. On Wednesday, TVLine exclusively confirmed that Jerrika Hinton, who plays Dr. Stephanie Edwards, is poised to exit after season 13. The news comes after the actress joined the cast of a new HBO series in January. It's worth noting that ABC has not commented on the news, nor has it officially renewed Grey's for season 14 (although it's pretty inevitable at this point). Even so, we can't help but wonder how Edwards will go. Will she die? Will she leave? Or will she stick around as a guest star and slowly fade into the ether? Only time will tell.

9 Quotes That Will Get You Stoked on Game of Thrones Season 7

We've still got months until the premiere of Game of Thrones season seven, but there's no time to waste. With just a few precious episodes left before the series comes to a close, we're looking at any and every hint that will tell us of what's to come. That means analyzing theories, poring over all the set pictures, and even scrutinizing every behind-the-scenes Instagram. On top of all that, there's one other source that may give us a clue of what to expect when season seven rolls around: the cast and crew themselves! We've pulled all the cryptic quotes we've gotten about what's next.

  • Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) is sure it will top every other season: "I can tell you that this season somehow is going to blow everyone's minds even more than the last. . . . The momentum that we've been building up for sort of really kicks into gear. . . . Storylines are happening and sort of combining and crashing together. It's a very, very dynamic season. I'm really excited for people to watch it."
  • John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) thinks the ending could be bleak: "It's interesting thinking about the end of Game of Thrones. Because we don't know how it ends. We don't know who wins or who loses. We've got no idea what kind of story we're telling. We don't know if it's an indictment of how bad people can triumph if good men do nothing, or a redemptive story about good triumphing over evil. We just don't know, so that mystery has fed in to everything we've done so far."
  • Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) shared the one thing we can expect: "A huge cliffhanger . . . it's just kind of tumbling now. . . . We've come to the climax and it's rolling down to the end. It's exciting. I really felt like at the end of last season everything was set up for how it was going to end. Every character came to a little junction in their lives. Now we're all going to crash down together to however this show ends."
  • Kit Harington (Jon Snow) thinks it will get worse before it gets better: "I think it's going to get very bleak before, if there is a happy ending. I think it's going to get very dark before it gets better. I think what we might see this season is those White Walkers and that Army of the Dead really come into force. . . . I think with the whole 'Winter is finally here' business, it means everyone is going to have a really bad time."
  • Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) has some thoughts about Sansa and Jon Snow: "She thinks they should both be king and queen of the North for sure. I'm not sure about the Iron Throne. I'm not sure she's so keen on that anymore. I'm not sure she believes that Jon is capable of running Winterfell. I think she thinks he doesn't have the intellect, the knowledge, the experience that she has, and I concur. She knows he has wonderful morals and those Stark morals that inevitably he'll make the right decision - or the good decision - but whether it's going to benefit anyone is another story."
  • D.B. Weiss (cocreator) thinks Cersei could go mad: "That's what so much of next season is going to be about: finding out what Cersei's mindset is. Who is she? While Cersei has certainly done a lot of horrible things in her life and she could be a very cruel person, the one thing that was redemptive about her was that she genuinely loved her children. Now they're all gone, and I think that is very interesting for us. Who is she without her children? The answer is something you'll find out next season."
  • Weiss insists Daenerys Targaryen will set everything into motion: "Once she gets on those ships and crosses West, that's when the clock on the end game starts ticking. The question has been: When is she going to get back across the Narrow Sea? When is she going to take back her homeland? It's been a long time for her, and it's been something that's such an imperative for people watching. You know she's not going to go there for a beach vacation . . . when she gets back to Westeros, it's on. Her return is the first domino."
  • David Benioff (cocreator) hints The Night King is headed further south: "The Wall isn't just a physical structure keeping the army of the dead out. If the Wildlings managed to make it over, which they have, and the Night King has so much more in the way of both power and troops who'll do literally anything he says . . . we'll keep it at that for now."
  • Benioff dishes on the endgame: "The pieces are on the board now. Some of the pieces have been removed from the board and we are heading toward the end game. The thing that has excited us from the beginning, back to the way we pitched it to HBO is, it's not supposed to be an ongoing show, where every season it's trying to figure out new story lines. We wanted it to be one giant story, without padding it out to add an extra 10 hours, or because people are still watching it. We wanted to something where, if people watched it end to end, it would make sense as one continuous story. We're definitely heading into the end game now."

A Superconvenient Solution For Cracked Phone Screens

Drop my phone, crack my phone, repeat. No matter what type of case I have on my iPhone 6, the outcome is still the same thanks to these clumsy hands God has #blessed me with. So when iCracked reached out about its on-demand screen repair service and I found myself with yet another busted screen, I decided to give it a try. The company that's been called a mix of Uber and AAA currently serves 600 cities (and 5,000 customers) across the US. It's not the only company of its kind, but it's one of the fastest growing.

The story of iCracked started in 2010 when CEO A.J. Forsythe started the service out of his dorm room at Cal Poly in California. He moved up to Silicon Valley, lived in a start-up house with a few other employees, and now employs 120 people at the company's headquarters, not including the part-time technicians. Those technicians do more than just fix cracked screens - they replace batteries, treat water damage, and inspect phones when they won't turn on.

The average price for cracked screens is $149 - this includes tipping and hardware costs - but it ultimately depends on the model. iCracked will repair a number of iPhone, iPad, and Samsung Galaxy devices. This is a little more expensive than Apple's prices for screen repair without Apple care (for reference, it costs $109 to fix the iPhone 6) but includes the convenience of having someone come to your home or work. The privacy is another bonus if you're one of the celebrities like Ashton Kutcher who uses iCracked.

The company also offers a plan where you pay $7 a month and only $25 for each subsequent repair. If you want to try to repair your phone yourself, you can also buy one of its DIY kits that contains the necessary tools, parts, and instructions.

Wondering what the on-demand screen repair service is like? Check out this breakdown but remember: getting any third-party repairs will probably void your device's warranty.

The True Stories Behind the 3 Remarkable Women in Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is an instant must watch. Based on the nonfiction bestseller of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, the film tells the untold true story of three black female mathematicians who were instrumental in making NASA's first manned orbit around the Earth a success. While helping America propel forward in the space race, they broke down national barriers for both female scientists, as well as people of color. Out of the three outstanding women portrayed, Katherine G. Johnson is the only one still living today. She stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that the movie was "well done" and "pretty accurate." However, the film is a biographical drama, not a documentary. Take a look to learn more about these incredible women, as well as what was made up for dramatic effect.

You Won't Be Able to Unsee This Hilarious Meme of Pregnant Beyoncé and George W. Bush

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, Beyoncé dropped another surprise on us by revealing that she is currently pregnant with twins! The Lemonade singer's announcement sent social media into a commenting frenzy. The reactions included one observant user who noticed that her goddess-like pregnancy photo, which included a veil and a bouquet of flowers, looked a lot like the viral meme of George W. Bush battling with a poncho during Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony earlier this year.

"TRENDWATCH 2017," Twitter user MollyMcGlew wrote. "This is art," one user commented. "Did he know he was starting a trend though?" another user questioned. The viral tweet now has over 4,000 retweets and 8,000 "likes" at press time, but it's safe to assume you won't be able to erase it from your memory anytime soon. Now there's only one question left to answer: who wore it best?

Matthew McConaughey's Opinions About Donald Trump Are . . . Not What You'd Expect

Matthew McConaughey sat down with ChannelFi in promotion for his upcoming movie Gold and ended up talking about Donald Trump in the process. After the English interviewer suggests that his film is about "redneck America sticking one up to the snotty East Coast elites," he proceeds to ask if it's about time Hollywood gives the president a break. "Well, they don't have a choice now," the actor coyly replied. "He's our president. And it's very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time as we've had. At the same time, it's time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years." In light of Trump's recent immigration ban, Matthew's quotes about tolerance are even more striking considering that his wife, Camila Alves, immigrated from Brazil. See what else he has to say around the 2:41 mark.

We've Already Been Treated to More Than a Few Snaps of Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde's Baby Girl

The actress is clearly enjoying being a mother of two, so hopefully we'll get to see more sweet family moments with Jason and their 2-year-old son, Otis.

This Daycare's Message to Parents Is Going Viral For All of the Right Reasons

When Juliana Farris Mazurkewicz stopped by a local daycare, she noticed something different: a new sign with an important message to all parents.

"You are picking up your child! GET OFF YOUR PHONE!" the message in front of the Texas daycare read. "Your child is happy to see you! Are you happy to see your child??" The bold note explained that staff members have seen proud kids trying to show their parents the work that they completed during the day as moms and dads continue to focus their attention on their devices.

Instead of ignoring the issue, the daycare workers are bringing it to the attention of all parents before they even walk through the door. "We have heard a child say, "'Mommy, Mommy, Mommy . . . ' and the parent is paying more attention to their phone than their own child," the note added. "It is appalling."

Hopefully this sign reminds parents of the importance of connecting more with their little ones and less with their phones.

But let's be real: J.K. has a rich history of giving zero f*cks when it comes to putting haters in their place on Twitter. But, really, that's just the tip of the iceberg. We've got even more brilliant burns when you read on.

22 Things No Parent Should Ever Say to Their Anxious Child

Just trying to figure out the real cause behind a child's biggest worries and concerns can be a difficult task for any parent. But once you've gotten down to the heart of the problem, it can be just as challenging to know exactly what to say to soothe their fears. Even if a child seems to be overly worried about a minor detail or you think they're making a major fuss over nothing, you never want to invalidate their feelings. Just like adults, some children are more anxious than others and react to and cope with stressors differently. As you try to navigate through a worried spell, it's important to know that some of the things you're saying in an attempt to calm their fears are actually inflaming them.

  1. You're going to make yourself crazy.
  2. What's wrong with you?
  3. You better snap out of it or else.
  4. You're just a worrywart.
  5. Your brother/sister did it and they were great!
  6. Stressing about it is just going to make things worse.
  7. I can do it for you instead.
  8. You have no reason to be stressed.
  9. Practice will make perfect.
  10. You're OK.
  11. There's nothing to be afraid of.
  12. Let's do something else instead!
  13. You won't fail!
  14. That's such a silly thing to be worried about!
  15. Trust me, it's going to all be OK.
  16. I can't understand why that has you so upset.
  17. Are you sure you should be doing that?
  18. You could try harder.
  19. You'll be fine.
  20. Don't cry.
  21. This is the worst-case scenario.
  22. You can do better than that.

Michelle Obama Just Got Officially Sworn In - by J.Crew

Relive the Moment Beyoncé Announced Her First Pregnancy at the 2011 VMAs

Beyoncé made the internet, her fans, and celebrities freak out on Wednesday when she announced that she's expecting twins with husband Jay Z. While we already can't wait to meet the two little American royals (because that's what they are), we also immediately thought back to her first pregnancy announcement. The year was 2011, and the iconic moment came at MTV's Video Music Awards. After first revealing her pregnancy on the red carpet, she showed off her bump again during her performance of "Love on Top." After perfectly belting out the song, Beyoncé dropped her mic and unbuttoned her jacket to rub her belly. Kanye West then excitedly grabbed Jay in celebration. Beyoncé went on to welcome daughter Blue Ivy in January 2012, and we've been spoiled with so many cute family moments since then. If you want the chills, watch the whole thing again above.

Here's Why Beyoncé Announced Her Pregnancy Before the Grammys

Beyoncé caused her very own internet meltdown when she announced that she and husband Jay Z are expecting twins. Celebrities and fans alike nearly lost their damn minds upon hearing the surprising news, but as it turns out, Beyoncé's announcement was strategically planned. "She announced it this way before Grammy fittings and rehearsals, as she knew it would get out. She couldn't repeat the same debut on the show like the [2011] VMAs and didn't want it to take away from her Grammy wins and performance," a source told Us Weekly. "She wants Grammy night to be about celebrating the album and her work. Now she can get ready and perform on Grammy night without all the attention going to this."

While it's only a matter of time before we get confirmation that she'll be performing at the Grammys on Feb. 11, Beyoncé received a total of nine nominations for Lemonade, and if she wins, she'll become the most awarded female artist in Grammy history! We're rooting for you, Bey!

Hacksaw Ridge: The Incredible True Story Behind the Oscar Nominee

With six Academy Award nominations (including one for director Mel Gibson and another for lead actor, Andrew Garfield), Hacksaw Ridge has emerged as one of the most lauded films of 2016. Both critics and audiences have praised the gritty war drama, which has racked up numerous international honors and over $150 million at the box office since its November release.

Those who haven't seen the World War II drama may not know that the onscreen story of Garfield's character is based closely on real-life soldier, Private First Class Desmond Doss. Even those who have lined up to see the film may not know just how much of the cinematic story was rooted in true events. As producer Bill Mechanic told People, he and Gibson "were very accurate with Desmond and what happened to him." That's not to say that the filmmakers were obsessive about every detail of Doss's life. "If you're a slave to the complete facts, then you're not making a movie that is compelling."

Here are the true elements that inspired Hacksaw Ridge, and the pieces that were fictionalized for movie magic.

Doss Was a Pacifist

According to Terry Benedict, who made a Doss documentary called The Conscientious Objector, the real-life subject of Gibson's film "just didn't fit into the Army's model of what a good soldier would be." Part of that perception had to do with Doss's outward appearance and demeanor; he's been described as a skinny kid from Virginia who spoke in a quiet Southern drawl. But the bigger issue was Doss's pacifist beliefs. As a Seventh-day Adventist, he refused to touch a weapon or work on the Sabbath. His fellow soldiers interpreted the lack of participation as laziness and considered him "their weakest link in the chain," according to Benedict. They harassed him verbally, and eventually physically, questioning why he had joined the Army at all.

He Had a History of Violence in His Family

In the film, a young Doss is fascinated by a framed poster of the Ten Commandments hanging in his home, and in particular, an illustration of the Sixth Commandment, which depicts Cain murdering his brother Abel. This detail is true to Doss's real childhood in Lynchburg, VA, where he grew up as the middle child of William, a carpenter and World War I veteran, and Bertha, a homemaker. Doss's father, who Hugo Weaving played in the film, suffered from alcoholism and depression related to PTSD while his mother (Rachel Griffiths) sought solace in religion and regularly attended church with her children. In the film, Doss is seen breaking up a fight between his parents and wrestling a gun away from his father. While the scene is based on actual events that inspired Doss's vow to never touch a gun again, the real fight involved his father and uncle.

His Real Love Story Was Different

On screen, Garfield's Doss falls in love with a nurse named Dorothy (Teresa Palmer) after taking an injured man to the hospital. In reality, Doss did indeed find love with Dorothy Schutte, but the two met at a Lynchburg church, not a hospital. The real-life couple wed in 1942 and had one son: Desmond, Jr. The couple remained married until her death in 1991 and Doss later married again to a woman named Frances Duman. They remained married until his death in 2006.

Doss Did Save Dozens of Lives

Thanks to a 1940 law, the Army couldn't turn away conscientious objectors like Doss; they were obligated to allow him to serve in a noncombatant position. Doss drew on his prior experience in the Philippines (which isn't depicted in the film) and deployed with the 307th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division in the summer of 1944 to serve as a medic. While it's undeniable that the real-life Doss ran through enemy gunfire in order to rescue fellow soldiers, the number of lives he saved is up for debate. Doss himself estimated the total count to be around 50, but the military insists the tally was double that amount. The filmmakers settled on a compromise, setting the number at 75.

He Made History

While some of the personal and chronological details may have been re-interpreted for the movie, one historic achievement that's preserved in the film is Doss's ultimate history-making recognition. President Harry S. Truman presented Doss with the Medal of Honor on Oct. 12, 1945, making him the first conscientious objector to ever receive the award.
