I was lucky enough to spend some time around Kloss during a hosted trip to the Adidas headquarters in Germany. Kloss was friendly, passionate, strong, and down to earth. During a panel, she touched on what it meant to her to be an athlete. "What is so amazing is that the idea of an athlete is ever-changing. It is unique to every one of us," Kloss said. "It's a mindset and discipline and focus to just be better every day, no matter what you are doing."

And Kloss herself can attest that women are doing a lot, so much so that the idea of working out, whether it's getting that run in or making it to a yoga class, seems downright impossible. "I am constantly on the go and this idea of staying active starts in my mind - it's a mental game," she said. "It's about discipline and focus, but it also means being OK with not being perfect." For Kloss, discipline means fitting in workouts and self-care whenever she can. It's a few calm minutes each day for reflection or meditation, it's late-night session at the gym while she battles jetlag, and it's a trip to her favorite local studio in whichever city she finds herself in. Whatever you have to do, Kloss urged the small crowd to just "do the damn thing" and "find the drive to hold yourself responsible and go further." She also reminded us that on days where it truly is impossible to work out, you should never beat yourself up about it because tomorrow is always the day to start fresh.

Still, finding that inner drive can be hard, so it also helps to look beyond the vanity of exercise. "Fitness is my breath. If I don't break a sweat, I feel suffocated," Kloss said. "It's not about how I look, it's how about how I feel, how I think. I am a better person because of it. I can be more creative."

While it's easier said than done, keep in mind that a few years ago Kloss had never even run a mile. Now she can boast that she's done the Paris half marathon. "Each one of us are so unique and not athletes by textbook definition," she said. "But we are authentic to who we are and what we're passionate about, and that is key to finding the athlete inside of yourself."

It's natural to feel a little stress as a parent. After all, you are in charge of a brand new human. And you are required to turn that brand new human into a well adjusted adult with the bare minimum of psychological baggage. Also, you're to do this while making sure they learn to walk, talk, and not kill themselves by chewing on the damn lamp cord! (What is your deal, Toby!?)

So, yeah. Your day-to-day can occasionally get a little intense. But when it goes from occasional blips of intensity to white-knuckle OMG MAKE IT STOP, it's time to consider some parental stress management. Here are some ways to calm the hell down.

Why It's Important

You may think you're doing an a-okay job hiding your stress from your kid, but it turns out that they're picking up way more than you could imagine. Studies have shown that your stress could even be affecting their genes. Which is funny considering when they destroy their jeans it affects your stress.

The emerging field of epigenetics shows that kids who have stressed out parents in the first few years of life could see genetic changes that affect things like insulin production and brain development. More than that, these effects could endure through most of their childhood.

To put an even finer point on it, stress also leads to: Increased illnesses, drug and alcohol abuse, decreased life satisfaction and increased risk of accidents. So before you start getting high, while suffering with the flu, and fall down that flight of stairs you're not satisfied with, it's time to get your crap together.

Keys To Stress-Free Parenting

No, the first step is not to go back into time and push yourself off your partner before you conceive (though that would make a great movie). After all, you love your little stress-inducing love-nugget-cutie-pie and your life would be 1,000 percent less interesting without them.

In fact, the first step is to not look at your kid, your partner, or anything else. It's to look at your own damn self and go from there. Here are some things to consider:

CHICKITY CHECK YO' SELF

Prior to wrecking yourself, you'll want to keep track of what really gets your stress pumping. It's not just your family writ large. There are likely pain points throughout the day that really get you spinning. Look for broken routines:

  • Getting everyone out the door in the morning
  • Coming home after work
  • Dinner time
  • Bedtime
  • Weekend activities

Make a note of those times that your heart rate is elevated, or your shoulders are around your ears. Consider when you get snippy with your kid or partner. Or when you feel like you want to drink all of the beers to calm down. What you'll likely find is a pattern related to times when things don't run smoothly in your house for whatever reason. It's time to take some action.

ORGANIZE

Sometimes the biggest stressors in family life are those times when routines haven't been fully established. Or times when there is forced hustle due to poor timing or disorganization. Luckily, there are many resources to help you get a lock on this stuff. Often it's simply a matter of giving yourself the right organizational tools, or shifting your environment or schedule to make things flow more smoothly.

LOOSEN UP

You know which people are traditionally stress-free? People who do not give a sh*t. Which is not to say you should just stop caring about your family or being a good parent. However, if you lower your expectations and understand that you are stressing about things that do not ultimately matter, you are going to be in a much better place.

So chill out about those development milestones. Or put together a budget and stop freaking out about money (because that's also making you look like hell). Maybe realize that a grocery store tantrum is not the end of the world, and the people giving you side eye in the snack aisle can go eat a bag of Dick's brand potato chips. The penis flavored ones.

HAVE SOME FUN

But make sure that said fun is happening with your family. Get out of the house for a day trip to the woods, mountains or beach. Or if you're staying in, get down with a silly YouTube dance party and enjoy how rude it sounds when your kid sings up-town, FUNK you up.

It's about letting loose and laughing with your family. Getting that boost of happy-time endorphins and letting that smile work to your advantage.

INDULGE IN SELF-CARE

The term "self-care" is definitely cringe-worthy for most dudes. But we're not talking bubble baths and candles here. We're talking about eating right. Getting some exercise (carefully) and maybe taking time for breathing in silence. There are plenty more ways to do this. None of them include an avocado mask and a glass of chardonnay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

GET A SUPPORT GROUP

You don't necessarily need to sit in a circle with a bunch of other stressed out dads talking about how you cry on your commute home. But it is helpful to know some dads that you can commiserate with every once in awhile. These guys might be in your neighborhood. Or you might be able to find them online. Just find them.

GET HELP

If you don't feel like any of this is working, then it might be time to seek help from a health professional. Getting your troubles off your chest with a counselor or psychologist might be just what you need to feel better. And they might even be able to provide some insight that you missed somewhere along the way.

The important part to remember is that fighting stress is a crucial to the health and well-being of your entire family. Not just yourself. And tackling it now means you'll have to stress less about making sure your kid becomes a cool grownup. Isn't it weird how that works?

Jaime Primak Sullivan might call herself "the meanest mom ever," but this New Jersey parent is teaching her boys not to hide their emotions.

This mother-of-three isn't afraid to show her sons affection, especially when they are in pain, and after a stranger at a baseball game criticized her for comforting her 8-year-old son Max when he got hit in the face with a ball, Jamie decided to speak out. "I saw it happen like it was slow motion. I saw his eyes widen and then squint from the pain - he looked around trying to focus. I knew he was looking for me," Jamie wrote on Facebook. "My feet couldn't move fast enough. As soon as we connected, I got down on one knee."

Jamie wrapped her arms around Max and he sobbed into her shoulder at the pain. A stranger quickly interrupted this moment between mother and son when he approached and said, "You need to stop babying that kid."

Instead of getting upset, Jamie kept her attention on her child, cleaned his face, and sent him back to join his team once she knew that he was OK. However, as she climbed back up the bleachers, her hands started shaking with rage.

"This notion that boys can never hurt, that they can never feel, is so damaging to them long term. The belief that any signs or gestures of affection will somehow decrease their manhood - this pressure to always 'man up' follows them into adulthood where they struggle to fully experience the broad scope of love and affection. The only emotion they healthily learn to express is happiness and then we wonder why they are always chasing it.

They're taught that sadness is weakness, that talking about their fears or short comings makes them less than. They don't mourn properly. The struggle to grieve. They're afraid to cry. It all spills into the way they husband and father and I hate it.

Love is a verb. It is something you do. It is not the same as babying, coddling or spoiling. It is something my son deserves. I will always love him when he is hurting and my prayer for him is that he is always open to receiving love so he can love in return and keep that cycle going."

These Crocheted Octopuses Are Being Used to Comfort Preemie Babies, and They're Amazing

Incubators can be extremely scary and lonely, but this hospital has figured out an unexpected way to comfort premature babies as they learn to live and breathe on their own. The Poole Hospital in Dorset, England, is offering all babies in the NICU these crocheted octopuses to help with their breathing. You're probably wondering how an octopus could calm a newborn, but the reasoning surprisingly makes perfect sense.

"One of the nurses brought in the octopus and explained about the idea," said a mother whose premature twin girls are currently in the hospital. "The girls absolutely love them. When they are asleep they hold onto the tentacles tightly. Normally they would be in the womb and would play with the umbilical cord so the octopuses make them feel grounded and safe. They really are beautiful."

The idea for these magical octopuses came from research in Denmark and is now being implemented in hospitals all over. The Poole Hospital shared online that the calming effect of the crocheted toy "leads to better breathing and more regular heartbeats as well as higher levels of oxygen in their blood." With babies holding on to these cuddly creatures, they can pull on the tentacles instead of on the tubes and monitors.

The Poole Hospital is asking for all skilled crocheters to help out by making these soothing toys and donating to the maternity unit. The exact pattern can be found here, but it explains that the tentacles cannot be more than 22 centimeters long and they must be made from 100 percent cotton.

20 Ways Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events Is Different From the Books

Avid readers generally remain steadfast in their belief that the book is always better than the movie or TV show, but this isn't to say that some adaptations can't be good. In fact, the Harry Potter film series and The Lord of the Rings trilogy are excellent. Even Game of Thrones fans seem to acknowledge the HBO series as a worthy adaptation. One of the reasons fans have doubts is because making a book into a movie or television show usually means that things get lost in translation. Favorite characters disappear, the sequence of events is shifted, and the setting is usually changed to a more cost-effective filming location. Fortunately, Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events is a tried-and-true replica of the books . . . except for these changes. Major spoiler warning!

The Bad Beginning (Episodes one and two)

  1. The Baudelaire parents are alive . . . or, so we thought. No bodies are recovered in the fire, so we assume that Mother (Colbie Smulders) and Father (Will Arnett) are the children's parents. They escape their kidnappers, fight off a drunken mob and angry refrigerator repairman, and survive a plane crash, all the while hoping to reunite with their children. Towards the end of episode seven, however, viewers learn that they are actually parents to the Quagmire children, not the orphaned Baudelaires. Despite this meaning that the Baudelaire parents most likely did perish in the fire (which is true to the books), the events surrounding the Quagmire parents are unique to the TV series.
  2. On the show, Mr. Poe introduces Eleanora as his wife. In the books, Eleanora is actually Mr. Poe's sister, and his wife is named Polly.
  3. On the show, Mr. Poe's secretary Jacqueline is a secret VFD member who tries to keep the children safe from Count Olaf's clutches. However, her character doesn't exist at all in the books.
  4. Unlike the books, the meaning of VFD and the secret society are hinted at almost immediately. When Lemony Snicket enters into the remains of the burnt Baudelaire mansion, he says, "Neither the official fire department nor the volunteer fire department arrived in time to stop the blaze." The reference was quick, but it was there.

The Reptile Room (Episodes three and four)

  1. In the TV series, when the Baudelaires arrive at Dr. Montgomery's house, they continue to share a room (though luckily not a bed!), despite each getting their own rooms in the books.
  2. Excluding the final reveal that Stephano is Count Olaf in disguise, the Baudelaire trio doesn't spend a lot of time in the Reptile Room in the TV series. In the books, each child is given a specific job to do. Violet is responsible for inventing new snake traps, Klaus must read up on the species, and Sunny has to bite rope into manageable sizes.
  3. When Uncle Monty receives the coded message at the movie theater, it reads: "Hello Monty. Danger! Take the children on the SS Prospero to Peru." In the books, not only does the Sebald code work differently, the message read: "Attention! Hidden in the snowman is a survivor of the fire. Meet us in the town where this film takes place. Bring the three children. Your new assistant is not one of us. Beware!"
  4. In the TV series, Uncle Monty doesn't plan a trip to Peru until he receives the secret message instructing him to do so. In the books, he had been planning on doing it all along as a fun trip for the family.
  5. In the books, Uncle Monty confronts Stephano and tears up the tickets so that no one will be able to go to Peru. In the series, the tickets remain intact, and when Stephano gets his hands on them, he plans to kidnap the children and take them away. Even though his plan fails, he boards the ship himself, but is confronted by Jacqueline . . . which is another thing missing from the books.
  6. In the TV series, Stephano blames the Incredibly Deadly Viper for Uncle Monty's murder and the Baudelaires use Sunny as bait to prove that the snake isn't dangerous at all. In the books, the children use Sunny's relationship with the Viper as a distraction, while Violet snoops for proof that Stephano is Count Olaf. Furthermore, in the TV series, the Viper slithers free, whereas in the books, he's captured along with the other snakes.

The Wide Window (Episodes five and six)

  1. In both iterations, Aunt Josephine gives all of the Baudelaires gifts when they arrive. However, Klaus receives an electric train in the books, unlike the deck of cards he receives (and later re-gifts to Sunny so that she can play poker) in the series.
  2. In the books, the children accompany Aunt Josephine to the market and are there when she first encounters Count Olaf disguised as Captain Sham. In the series, the children stay behind and Aunt Josephine later surprises them by bringing Captain Sham home.
  3. In the books, Captain Sham calls Aunt Josephine on the phone to make their date. Terrified of being electrocuted, Aunt Josephine refuses to answer the phone so Violet does so instead. Realizing it's Count Olaf on the phone, Violet pretends it's the wrong number and that he's reached the Hopalong Dance School by mistake. Aunt Josephine finds Violet's answering the phone to be very brave, which gives her courage to answer herself when Count Olaf calls back. This entire sequence is missing in the TV series.


  1. In the TV series, a waiter (and secret VFD member) at The Anxious Clown suggests that the children eat peppermints to induce an allergic reaction that will free them of Count Olaf. In the books, eating the peppermints is Violet's idea.
  2. In the books, the gates to the docks are locked and the keys are in the hands of Count Olaf's henchman, who is standing guard. The children concoct a plan and battle the henchman, barely escaping his grasp. This entire sequence is missing from the series, where the children get onto the docks and steal a sailboat with ease.
  3. In the TV series, Count Olaf rescues Aunt Josephine and the Baudelaires from their sinking sailboat by letting them board the ferry. When he threatens to throw Aunt Josephine overboard to the leeches, she finally becomes the fierce and formidable woman she once was and stands her ground to protect the children (but is thrown overboard anyway). In the books, Aunt Josephine is much more spineless. She eagerly lets Count Olaf have the children and even vows to change her appearance, switch identities, and leave town forever if he will spare her. He agrees, but then pushes her overboard when she corrects his grammar.
  4. In the books, after Captain Sham is exposed as Count Olaf, he locks Mr. Poe and the children behind a gate so that he and his henchman can escape. In the series, the children hide in the back of a truck when no one is looking, escaping from both Count Olaf and Mr. Poe.

The Miserable Mill (Episodes seven and eight)

  1. In the books, Dr. Georgina Orwell is killed when she falls into the buzz saw. Potentially too graphic for television, this is adapted so that she burns in a furnace.
  2. In the books, Violet and Sunny sneak into Sir's library to read a book that Dr. Orwell donated and discover that secret words are used to hypnotize and control subjects. In the series, all three Baudelaire children learn this when they sneak into Dr. Orwell's office and overhear her discussing secret words with Count Olaf (disguised as Shirley the secretary). Furthermore, Violet and Sunny sneak into the Mill's library to read up on the history of the town fire, not hypnotism.
  3. At the end of episode eight, Count Olaf and his henchman escape the Mill before Mr. Poe arrives, causing him to disbelieve the children when they tell him of Shirley and Dr. Orwell's evil plan. Even Sir escapes the angry, un-hypnotized mob, and his partner, Charles, leaves the Mill to find him. In the books, Shirley and Foreman Flacutono are locked in the library and the adults (including Sir and Charles, who never flee the Mill) discover the left ankle tattoo, exposing them to be Count Olaf and his henchman in disguise.
