See Which Diet Category You Fall Into - It'll Change the Way You Eat

We recently had a casual conversation with Brooke Barnett - a woman we interviewed last year who lost over 100 pounds - about eating habits, healthy tips, and wellness philosophies, and she dropped a little knowledge on us. Apparently, there are two groups of people: moderators and abstainers. According to Brooke, determining which one she is was fundamental in her weight loss journey.

"I'm an abstainer," she told us. "I would love to actually be a moderator and to be able to moderate my intake, but that's just not how I'm wired." She explained that it took her a while to understand the way her brain and body work, but once she did, it was life changing. "The concept was introduced to me, and it wasn't like a light switch; it was actually a gradual understanding and acceptance after continuous trial and error. Once I was able to accept it, things clicked."

The concept comes from Gretchen Rubin, New York Times bestselling author and happiness philosopher. On Gretchen's site, she describes the following two categories of behavior, which includes how you eat:

You're a moderator if you:

  • Find that occasional indulgence heightens your pleasure and strengthens your resolve
  • Get panicky at the thought of "never" getting or doing something

You're an abstainer if you:

  • Have trouble stopping something once you've started
  • Aren't tempted by things that you've decided are off limits

Where do you fall? Do you have a better time limiting your treats to small portions or do you have to throw out the ice cream in the freezer in order to survive?

It's easy to preach "everything in moderation" and "it's all about balance" - but the truth is, it's not that simple if you're an abstainer. What happens when moderation isn't an option, and one bite, one treat, or one day of eating whatever you please snowballs into a cycle you simply cannot break?

"Once I started experimenting with the idea of abstinence [from food], I realized that having none was often easier than having one," said Brooke. "I no longer had to use mental energy or willpower to play the 'Should I? Shouldn't I?' game of moderation." Does that scenario sound familiar to you? In that case, you should adjust your diet accordingly.

"Now that my body has weaned off its drug-like response, I don't really crave sweets or snacks and I enjoy eating real food."

Everyone is wired differently, and everyone's body is different - it's the reason why there's no cure-all diet that works for absolutely every single person, and why it's hard to find nutritionists and dietitians who can agree on every single topic. If you're a moderator, maybe it's time to quit the elimination diets for good. And if you're an abstainer, perhaps that's a better option for you. "We are all different and our bodies tolerate or react to things in different ways," Brooke told POPSUGAR. The best thing you can do for your health and diet is get to know you, your habits, and your relationship to food better.

If you think you fall into the abstainer category, don't freak out. "It seems extreme," said Brooke, "because it goes in the face of moderation - this elusive idea that isn't really measurable and is hailed as balanced and healthy living. So this idea of complete restriction seems like a terrible, terrible idea." But if you can give it a shot, you might have massive success like Brooke did.

"After abstaining from foods like sugar and refined carbohydrates, I no longer have the same taste for them, and not eating them is a nonissue, whereas moderating these foods felt like a constant struggle. Now that my body has weaned off its drug-like response, I don't really crave sweets or snacks, and I enjoy eating real food."

Lady Gaga Shuts Down Body Shamers With the Most Empowering Response

Lady Gaga's incredible Super Bowl Halftime Show had her pulling off major stunts, flipping upside down, and dropping her microphone in the most well-deserved mic drop of all time. But the most surprising part of all was the horrific body-shaming commentary she received after the show. In a ridiculous turn of events, instead of recognizing the pure greatness with which Gaga had blessed the halftime show, some viewers actually had the nerve to comment on her appearance, suggesting that she "do some crunches if she wants to show her flabby belly." Yep, appalling.

But after Gaga's fans responded to the haters, she decided to take matters into her own hands and delivered the best response to those body-shaming critics. Gaga took to Instagram to post a photo from her performance with a message that will leave anyone who's struggled with body image beaming with pride.

"I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I'm proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do. I could give you a million reasons why you don't need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That's the stuff of champions. thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys. Xoxo, gaga."

We applaud you, Gaga!

5 Tips For Not Just Surviving but Also Loving Valentine’s Day as a Single Mom

Having been a single parent for eight Valentine's Days, Heather Monahan has worked past the idea of being "alone" on this holiday. However, through her journey, she's seen a lot of other moms struggle.

Although her first Valentine's Day postdivorce was difficult, this Florida mom has a new perspective and wants to share what she's discovered to help those who find this time of year difficult. Instead of focusing on what she doesn't have, Heather makes an effort to use this holiday as a way to teach her son the importance of making people that you care about feel special.

"These little people are always watching us and emulating our behavior; the holiday hasn't been about relationship statuses but instead about making others feel special when you care for them," Heather told POPSUGAR Moms. "There has been no gift from a significant other that can compare to the thoughtfulness of my child."

Read through for Heather's five tips for not just surviving Valentine's Day but also learning to love it as a single mom.

  1. Create a few annual activities that you do with just you and your kids. From getting crafty to watching A Charlie Brown Valentine with your kids as you devour pizza, creating annual rituals gives both you and your kids something to look forward to every year. "Whether it's baking or a craft project, the key is to create a loving environment where everyone is having fun, spending time together, and even doing something creative together," Heather said.
  2. Throw your own party with your kids. If you're feeling a bit down this year or don't have anywhere to go, change your narrative by throwing your own party. "Invite some of the other parents (whether single or in relationships) over with their kids to make valentines and enjoy some sweets," Heather suggests.
  3. Love yourself and practice self-care. There's nothing more important than embracing where you are right now in your life. Do something nice for you, whether that's booking a massage, running a bubble bath, or buying yourself something special. "Remember, there's nothing wrong with being single! If no one is buying you a Valentine's Day gift this year, buy or make yourself one," Heather said. "Self-love and self-care are super important to stay positive. And when you're in a positive mind space, you attract other positive people into your life."
  4. Do something nice for someone else. One of the best ways to feel love is to give love, and you can give do this in both big and small ways. "You could smile at someone on the street, pay for someone's meal behind you in a drive through, donate to a charity, or spend some time volunteering," Heather said. "Volunteering with your kids and helping others is a great way to feel love and spread love for Valentine's Day."
  5. Encourage your kiddo to make valentines for everyone - including your ex. The example that you set is what your children will emulate, and seeing them embrace love will fill you with pride. "I always ask my son to make a valentine for his father and for anyone else that he cares about because this shows that you can love and care for many people at once," Heather said. "I want my son to know that love is not a finite thing that you can run out of - instead, I hope this shows him how infinite love actually is."

1 Editor Put the Best of Unicorn Makeup to the Test For a Week

It's been over a year since I last challenged myself to master a buzzy beauty trend. Don't get me wrong, I've seen tons of makeup inspiration since then, but nothing really spoke to my soul until a colorful, almost '90s-inspired fad began to circulate.

Unicorn makeup (well, unicorn everything) has completely swarmed the web. It's hard to say where the trend bubbled up first, whether it was in beauty products and video tutorials or tantalizing desserts. Either way, you can't scroll through Instagram today without seeing some sort of magical creation using every pastel shade on the color spectrum.

I was born in 1993 and being the good '90s baby that I am, I felt it was my civic duty to take this nostalgia-inducing trend into my own hands and test it out IRL. I spent hours researching products and recruited the help of my colleagues and experts here at POPSUGAR to round up some of the most lust-worthy (and sold out, no less) picks for my experiment.

For an entire work week, I woke up every morning and bypassed my usual routine that, for lack of a better word, is extremely boring (concealer, blush, mascara). Instead, I reached for my iridescent glosses and shiny new palettes. The whole thing was thrilling, to say the least.

Ahead, find out how all of the looks came together and see if you'd be brave enough to sport the trend while out in the real world.

Donald Trump Tweeted About the "Easy D," So Naturally the Internet Is Roasting Him

It looks like President Donald Trump might really want to consider hiring someone to check his tweets - especially after his last one. Trump's latest tweet mentioned his views on the controversial Muslim ban but then ended by saying he's waiting for the "EASY D!"

I kid you not, please look for yourself below.

It looks like Trump was tweeting about yesterday's hearing on the Muslim ban at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. At the end of the hearing, Judge Michelle Friedland said a decision would come "as soon as possible," according to The New York Times. The "d" is a reference to the decision Trump is waiting to hear.

Apparently, Trump thinks a decision can't come fast enough, so he tweeted about it using the worst phrasing. The internet, of course, wasted zero time making memes about the tweet - and they are hilarious. See some of the most giggle-inducing ones ahead.

What Does the Queen Have For Breakfast? Get a Peek Into Life Behind Palace Doors

The queen has always maintained a dignified silence when it comes to her home life - she never gives interviews and rarely discloses even the tiniest tidbit of personal information - but a glance at the 800 or so companies that hold Royal Warrants provides a wealth of detail about her majesty's private life. A Royal Warrant is an official mark of recognition that is granted to any company that has provided the queen with goods or services for five years or more, and it allows the company to display the queen's coat of arms on its packaging and promotional materials. Prince Philip and Prince Charles are the only other two members of the family who can grant a Royal Warrant, but the most telling are those companies that provide the queen with everything from agricultural machinery to marzipan and lipsticks to helicopter engines.

Breakfast

Cereal is the queen's breakfast of champions, and her choices are reassuringly traditional. Kellogg's, Weetabix, and Quaker Oats all hold a Royal Warrant, and the various cereals are kept in Tupperware containers to keep them fresh. Her majesty's morning tea of choice? Twinings English Breakfast; milk, no sugar.

Drinks

If one was ever to find oneself at a cocktail party at Buckingham Palace, it's good to know what will be served - and for the most part it's not as fancy as you might expect. Gordon's gin, Pimm's, Bacardi, and Bulmers cider are all warrant holders; however, there are numerous suppliers of fine wines and eight different Champagne producers including Bollinger, Krug, Lanson, and Winston Churchill's favorite, Pol Roger (which was also served at William and Kate's wedding).

Beauty Favorites

The queen has been a fan of Clarins ever since her coronation, when she commissioned the company to design a shade of lipstick to complement her gown. It has been reported that she favors its Ever Matte Mineral Powder Compact in Transparent Fair and Hand and Nail Treatment Cream, as well as its eye shadow palettes.

Elizabeth Arden has been a Royal Warrant holder for 55 years, and two of the queen's favorite products are the Eight Hour Cream and Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick in Bold Red. Her majesty favors Floris perfume and Bronnley soap, as well as quintessential British brand Yardley and the more modern Molton Brown.

Eco-Wares

Prince Charles is known for championing environmentally friendly products, but the queen is quietly also big on eco-fare. She uses a number of green warrant-holders including Delphis Eco, which provides environmentally friendly cleaning products, and Agri-cycle, which uses agricultural waste such as spray cans, fertilizer bags, and shrink wrap and recycles it into furniture, flooring, and containers.

The Everyday vs. the Extraordinary

The queen is known for having pretty simple tastes when it comes to what she eats at home, and her wartime upbringing is reflected in her unfussy style - so it's no surprise that she has Heinz ketchup, Ryvita crackers, Baxters soups, and Robinsons fruit squashes at home. She's also a fan of British High Street favorite Boots the Chemist. However, she is a monarch, and the mind-boggling roster of Royal Warrant holders also includes gold-leaf manufacturers, medal makers, chandelier refurbishers, animal pregnancy scanners, calligraphers, silk flower crafters, name-badge makers, helicopter engine manufacturers, and even a taxidermist.

British Artisanal Produce

The royal family are all big supporters of local produce, and many of the queen's choices are very specific - bacon from Denhay Farms, sausages from Musk's, eggs from Noble Foods, jam from Wilkin & Sons, and coffee from H.R. Higgins. It's a good thing she doesn't have to do the shopping herself - a simple cooked breakfast would take a whole day to accumulate.

Interior Design

When it comes to furnishing her properties, the queen unsurprisingly opts for luxury, tradition, and history, choosing AW Hainsworth for fabrics, Sanderson for wallpaper, Albert E. Chapman for curtains, and Heirlooms for fine linens. Charles Farris provides beeswax church candles, and in a strange quirk, A Nash supplies old-fashioned Harry Potter-style brooms for the royal sweeping. Her majesty also likes using philanthropic organizations and purchases mattresses from Glencraft - 70 percent of whose workforce is made up of people with disabilities.

Phones, Laptops, and Tablets

The queen Skypes with various members of her family and tweets to her many fans - and now we know how. Her majesty is clearly an Android kind of lady, as Samsung is listed as a Royal Warrant holder.

Sweet Treats

The queen loves chocolate (and always gives it up for Lent), but on the other 325 days of the year, she has her pick of the everyday supermarket brands Cadbury and Nestlé, along with the more high-end Charbonnel et Walker, Prestat, and Bendicks - which specializes in after-dinner mints.

The Best of the Rest

Undergarments: Quaintly billed as "corsetieres" on the Royal Warrant holders website, the incredibly fancy Rigby and Peller are the ones entrusted with creating the queen's intimates. It has also been reported that the Duchess of Cambridge has called upon the services of the company, too.

Holistic health: The queen is a traditionalist in many ways, yet Ainsworths Homeopathic Pharmacy has a Royal Warrant - so it seems the queen is also a fan of alternative therapies.

Christmas supplies: When William, Kate, George, and Charlotte gather with the rest of the family at Sandringham, they will be tearing open traditional metallic foiled wrapping paper and pulling bespoke crackers from specialist Christmas wares company Tom Smith.

It's Confirmed: Lauren Conrad Has the Cutest Maternity Style Ever

We don't expect Lauren Conrad's sweet and feminine style will ever change, even while she's pregnant. All you need to do is take a glance at her past outfits - a mix of maxi dresses, floral prints, and clean silhouettes - to see that Lauren has a tendency to stick to what she loves and what works for her body. She isn't one to embrace crazy red carpet or runway trends; instead, she opts for safe, familiar pieces she can always wear time and time again. It's a reason her own clothing line, Paper Crown, is such a hit with fans. We don't blame this mama-to-be for sticking to what she knows; it's how you craft a signature look in the first place.

Judging from her first snapshot of her baby bump, along with the minidress she wore to Rebecca Minkoff's fashion show, we can expect some printed pieces in her closet as well as cozy staples to curl up in, so keep your eyes on her. Lauren's maternity outfits will definitely be Pinterest worthy.

The Trailer For Netflix's JonBenét Ramsey Documentary Will Send Chills Down Your Spine

After the viral success of Netflix's Making a Murderer, the streaming giant is dipping its toes back into true crime for an in-depth look at the infamous, unsolved murder of JonBenét Ramsey with Casting JonBenet. It's been 21 years since the 6-year-old beauty queen was found murdered in her family home, but interest in her death has far from waned. In 2016, a number of TV specials aired about her, but Netflix's feature-length documentary - which has the same slick, stylized, look its docs are becoming known for - is a hybrid of fiction and nonfiction filmmaking that took place over the course of 15 months in Ramsey's Colorado hometown. It aims to figure out why this crime's legacy continues to capture the nation's attention, and the first trailer features a JonBenét lookalike who asks the camera, "Do you know who killed JonBenét Ramsey?" It will leave you unsettled, to say the least. See it when it premieres on Netflix on April 28.

The Ultimate Dairy-Free Milk Nutrition Guide

There's a lot of misinformation out there, but dietitian Julie Upton, MS, RD, of Appetite For Health is here to shed light on dairy-free milk myths and how they compare to one another.

Moove over, cow's milk. As more shoppers choose a dairy-free diet, alternatives for cow's milk are overflowing with nut-, pea-, and grain-based choices. If you want to know how the most popular nondairy beverages stack up nutritionally, here's a guide:

Soymilk

One Cup Serving (Original Flavor): 100 calories, 4g fat, 0.5g saturated fat, 6g protein, 2-8g sugar, 30 percent DV calcium, and 30 percent DV vitamin D. Soy milk also offers vitamin A, iron, riboflavin, folate, vitamin B12, potassium, and magnesium. Soy provides beneficial phytoestrogens that provide heart health benefits too.

Soymilk can be used when cooking as a one-for-one substitution for dairy milk. It works for many dishes and baking, but soymilk may separate when exposed to high heat or acidic foods like citrus, vinegar, or tomatoes. Look for unsweetened varieties for savory dishes.

Coconut Milk

One Cup Serving (Original Flavor): 80-100 calories, 5g fat, 5g saturated fat, 1g protein, 6-10 grams sugar, 45 percent DV calcium, 25 percent DV vitamin D, and 50 percent vitamin B12. A glass packs in 1/4 of your daily saturated fat, which health organizations advise to limit to help protect against heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Coconut milk works well in recipes that require a creamy, rich consistency like sauces, gravies, or puddings as a direct replacement for cow's milk. It provides a rich, creamy taste similar to half and half, so most enjoy it in coffee.

Almond Milk

One Cup Serving (Original Flavor): 60 calories, 2.5g fat, 0g saturated fat, 1 gram protein, 0-7 grams sugar, 45 percent DV calcium, and 25 percent DV vitamin D. Almond milk also offers riboflavin, vitamin B12, and zinc. Because almonds are rich in vitamin E, almond milk is the only milk to be an excellent source of the nutrient.

Almond milk is a diet ally because it's low in calories. Use it as a one-for-one substitution when cooking or baking. In some recipes, you'll detect a nuttier taste and texture. Choose unsweetened varieties for savory dishes.

Macadamia Milk

One Cup Serving (Original Flavor): 60 calories, 3.5g fat, .5g saturated fat, 0 gram protein, 7g sugar, 50 percent DV calcium and vitamin E, and 25 percent DV vitamin D.

This higher-fat nut is now available as a dairy-free milk and it is richer and creamier than most other nut milks because most of its calories come from fat. If you want protein, don't count on macadamia nut milk, because it has none. It is higher in calcium and vitamin E compared to other dairy-free choices.

Rice Milk

One Cup Serving (Original): 110-120 calories, 2g fat, 0g saturated fat, 1g of protein, 12-14 g sugar, 30 percent DV calcium, 25 percent vitamin D, and 25 percent DV vitamin B12. Because rice milk is both dairy-free and nut-free, it's a great option for anyone with those specific allergies.

At 120 calories per cup, rice milk is one of the highest-calorie plant-based milks but is also low in protein and higher in sugars. It's generally recommended for its allergy-friendly benefits, not for it's nutritional profile. It works well for sweets as well as in soups or thin sauces, but lacks the fat necessary to make anything creamy.

Hemp Milk

One Cup Serving (Original): 70-100 calories, 5-6g fat, 0.5g saturated fat, 2-4g of protein, 6 g sugar, 30-50 percent DV calcium, 25 percent vitamin D, 25 percent DV riboflavin, and 25 percent vitamin B12. Hemp milk also provides phosphorus and magnesium.

Hemp milk provides a small amount of omega-3 fatty acids, but it lacks the protein of cow's milk and has added sugars. You'll need to experiment with it when cooking and baking because its sweetness may impact the flavor of savory items.

Pea Milk

One Cup Serving (Original): 100 calories, 5g fat, .5g saturated fat, 8g protein, 6g sugar, 45 percent calcium, and 30 percent vitamin D; good source of iron and vitamin A.

Pea milk is one of the newest dairy-free alternatives and it has a taste and texture very similar to cow's milk. It packs in more calcium and vitamin D from fortification. Made from yellow split peas, pea milk has the same protein as cow's milk and it is also available in an unsweetened version with no added sugar.

Cow's Milk (For Comparison)

One Cup Serving (Skim): 80 calories, 0g fat, 0g saturated fat, 8g of protein, 30 percent DV calcium and 25 percent of the DV for vitamin D. Dairy milk also offers potassium, phosphorus, and vitamins A and B.

Cow's milk is loaded with nutrients and it's also a natural good source of quality whey protein. It also has no added sugars, unlike many plant-based milks. It's the standard for most recipes, from soups and sauces to smoothies and baked goods.

Tyler Florence's Hack Will Forever Change the Way You Make Mashed Potatoes

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Nicole Perry

Food Network chef Tyler Florence shared his mashed potatoes recipe with us, and I immediately had to try it. Traditionally, potatoes are cooked in water before being mashed together with butter and cream (or milk). However, Tyler suggests cooking the potatoes in the cream itself, so no potato-y flavor is lost. He explains, "Potatoes have a really delicate, beautiful minerality to their flavor profile, and when you cook potatoes in water and you pour that water down the drain, you've extracted all the flavor of the potato. So what I do with mashed potatoes - because you finish them with cream and butter anyway, right? - is I'll take that same cream and butter and add that to the potatoes and cook the potatoes in cream and butter." Would that actually work? Would it actually taste good? I had to find out.

As Tyler instructed, I added "cold, peeled, chopped potatoes, cream, butter, and olive oil" to a pan. He also told us, "I like garlic. I like sage and rosemary flavor combinations, and a little bit of thyme." To my pot of 3 pounds of potatoes, I added enough half and half to just barely cover the potatoes. Frankly, I was scared about using straight cream, which is why I deviated slightly from his instruction. I then added about 3 tablespoons of salted butter and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. I added a few cloves of peeled garlic and half a bunch each of sage, rosemary, and thyme. I also included a significant amount of salt (at least a teaspoon) so the potatoes could absorb some of the flavor while cooking. I covered the pot and allowed it to simmer on medium until the potatoes became fork tender, about 20 minutes. The aroma in my kitchen was unbelievable.

Here's what Tyler told us to do next: "When the potatoes are tender, I put a bowl on the counter and a colander inside that bowl. I pour the potatoes through the colander, and the cream will collect on the bottom. Then I'll put the potatoes back into the pot and take the potato-infused garlic cream and fold that back into the potatoes, and it's the most incredible flavor profile. It's the best mashed potato you'll ever taste in your entire life." And so, I did just that. I drained the potatoes, collecting the rich liquid while discarding the herb stems. I then mashed the potatoes, adding back in the liquid until I created velvety smooth mashed potatoes with little specks of garlic and herbs. I salted and peppered to taste and served up with my lemon-garlic-parsley roast turkey and gravy. These mashed potatoes are pure heaven. I can now agree with Tyler's affirmation; they really are the best mashed potatoes I've ever tasted in my entire life. And even though I was scared it would be a huge flop, I'm never going back to any other method again.

24 Times George and Amal Clooney Looked Madly in Love

George Clooney said goodbye to the single life when he went public with his romance with Amal Alamuddin during an African safari in March 2014. The two had a whirlwind courtship before they made things official when they tied the knot in Venice, Italy that September after a weekend full of festivities. In their years together, they've shared plenty of sweet moments at events, on red carpets, and while fighting for causes they believe in. Long story short: they're kinda perfect.

Nicole Kidman Is Kind of Terrifying in the Beguiled Trailer

Director Sofia Coppola is back with her first feature film since 2013's The Bling Ring, and this time she's going Southern Gothic. Based on the 1966 Thomas Cullinan novel and the 1971 film starring Clint Eastwood, The Beguiled centers around a Confederate soldier (Colin Farrell) who takes residence at an all-girls boarding school run by headmistress Martha Farnsworth (Nicole Kidman) in rural Virginia. However, as he begins to bond with a few of the young women, weird things start happening. Catch the dark trailer above before the film hits theaters on June 23.

This New Horror Movie Is Like a Really Grim Version of Aladdin

We're only a handful of weeks into 2017, but there's a sudden influx of new horror movies that will make for some seriously chilly months ahead. In the time since the first of the year, we've caught glimpses of Kristen Stewart's new thriller Personal Shopper, an unsettling movie about cannibals, and a mysterious addition called It Comes at Night. Now, we have Wish Upon, the story of a girl (Joey King) who comes across a magical box that will grant her seven wishes. When she uses her first to wish a rotting death on one of her enemies, it's clear this is not going to be some fantastical walk through the park. Watch the first trailer above, and see if you can spot Barb.

8 Secrets of a Chinese Restaurant, Revealed by an Employee

If you've always wanted to know what really goes on inside a Chinese restaurant, you're in luck. A restaurant employee recently did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) entitled Your Typical Chinese Restaurant Employee, and he answered a lot of users' questions that touched on everything except the exact recipes (some things have to remain a secret!). He wrote, "I am Chinese. Parents are Chinese. Parents own a typical take out Chinese food restaurant. I have worked there almost all my life and I know almost all the ins and outs." Curious about his insider secrets? Read on for some of the standout questions and answers, and then catch up on the whole AMA here.

1. The secret to authentic Chinese food is the sauce.

Someone mentioned that they try to make Chinese food at home but it's never nearly as good - not even "as good as the worst Chinese takeout." Turns out, the major difference is the sauce.

2. Using a wok makes a difference.

Another reason your homemade stir fries and lo mein might not taste authentic is that using a wok is far superior to a regular skillet. "The ability to flash cook in a wok makes a big difference believe it or not."

3. North American Chinese food is cheaper.

4. The secret to the chicken in dishes like General Tso's is the breading.

5. Yes, many restaurants really do use the same images for the menu.

6. Don't believe a restaurant if it says it doesn't have MSG . . . it's already in soy sauce and many other sauces.

7. The best thing to order is anything Mongolian style. At least, that's this guy's personal favorite.

8. The one thing you should NEVER order is . . . fries.

Learn All the Words and Phrases You'll Hear at Westminster

I recently chatted with dog breeder/handler/owner Brenda Algar, who has spent years in the dog business, about what to expect in a dog show, and as she went on, I realized there was a lot that I didn't know about dog shows. One of the first things to jump out at me was all the terminology. I had no idea what it meant to campaign a dog or what a ringside pickup was. So here you go, everyone, a helpful guide to all the terminology you might hear in reference to the upcoming Westminster show (and any other dog show).

  • Benched show: These are the shows that are designed for the public. The dogs must be kept in a benching area that is designated for them and viewable to the public. This way, people can walk around the benching area and see the dogs and talk to owners and handlers.
  • Best in show judging: The seven winners from the group judging compete against each other for the title of best in show, which is the top honor of a dog show.
  • B*tch: Simply a female dog. No bad connotations with this word in the dog world. It is used very commonly.
  • Breeder: In the dog show world, these are the people who ethically mate dogs to create more show dogs. Sometimes breeders show their own dogs at shows, but not always.
  • Breed judging: This is exactly what it sounds like. It's when all the dogs in each particular breed are judged against each other to pick the best of the breed to send to group judging.
  • Call name: When dogs are registered, they can sometimes have some pretty interesting names, like Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie, the best in show winner at the 2015 National Dog Show Presented by Purina. Thus, dogs are given call names for handlers to use in the ring that are a little easier understood. Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie's call name is simply Charlie.
  • Campaigning a dog: This means that a dog is entered into many shows so as to beat as many other dogs as possible to become nationally ranked.
  • "CH" in front of a dog's name: If this is in front of a dog's registered name, it means he is a champion of record. That means that he has a total of 15 points at licensed AKC shows, and at least six points must be from major wins.
  • Group judging: Each of the best of breed winners then moves on to group judging. There are seven groups: herding, hound, sporting, nonsporting, terrier, toy, and working. One winner is selected from each group to move on to best in show.
  • Handler: These are the people who bring the show dogs into the ring for judging. Sometimes handlers own the dogs they're showing, but not always. Handlers and the dogs they show have a very close relationship, because it's important for the handler to know the dog very well in order to show him to a judge.
  • Lead: Unlike a leash, a lead is a very thin piece of leather or cord used to guide the dog around the show ring.
  • Owner: These are the people who actually own the show dogs. They might just own them on paper but have a handler who takes care of their day-to-day needs and everything at shows. Sometimes owners will show their own dogs at shows, but not always.
  • Points: When dogs win breed judging at shows, they're awarded points. In the US, when a dog reaches 15 points, six of them being from two different judges in major wins, it is considered a champion.
  • Ringside pickup: Sometimes, for one reason or another, a dog will not have a handler for a show and one needs to be substituted in last minute. It's called a ringside pickup because a handler, who doesn't actually know the dog, will step in before judging and show the dog.

7 Questions to Ask Yourself and Discuss With Your Family Before Getting a Pet

Quite simply, I am a dog person and always have been. I came home from the hospital and was immediately greeted by my parents' Golden Retriever, Rory, who would soon become my dog, the first in a long line of four-legged friends that my parents, brother, and I loved and treated like equal members of our family.

When I was 26, I got my own pup, a Tibetan Terrier so adorable that I could barely walk him down the street without cars stopping to ask what kind of puppy he was. I named him Gus after my favorite of Cinderella's mice and trained him to let me carry him around on my hip like a young child. (My bug for a baby was obviously rapidly approaching.)

I met my future husband when Gus was a little over a year old, and despite my often-stated prerequisite for a mate that loved dogs, I decided his sensitivity, ambition, and great sense of humor were more important than the fact that he hadn't grown up with dogs and was kind of glad about that fact. He tolerated Gus (a high-maintenance creature that my father nicknamed the "arrogant bastard") because he loved me, but a few years later, when Gus nipped our then 1-year-old daughter in the face for no reason at all, I knew he was going to insist on finding him a new home.

I had to agree after a quick search of his breed told me that they were not really suitable dogs for families with young children. It's research that I wish I would have done long before I fell in love with his sweet puppy face, but knowing that our house would be home to young kids for quite some time, I knew it was time to prioritize my human children and say goodbye to my four-legged one.

Luckily, my parents, the original dog-lovers, agreed to adopt Gus despite those well-earned nicknames; I got visiting rights; and our family went on, adding a son a few years after my daughter. My kids are each their own people and very different from one another, but there's one trait of mine they've both inherited: they are both obsessed with dogs.

That little nip hasn't stopped my daughter from desperately wanting her own puppy. The kid brainstorms dog names constantly, and the only books she's brought home from her school's library all year are nonfiction primers about different dog breeds. My now-3-year-old son will regularly put his chubby little hands together and say a prayer for "my very own puppy" with heartbreaking earnestness. I'm not sure if the dog gods are listening, but I know my husband isn't.

I have to say that my own desires for a dog have also waned in the years since I've had kids. The prospect of having another body in our house to keep clean, fed, and out of trouble seems daunting. I haven't even managed to potty-train my son yet, so the idea of having two creatures to have to teach the proper place to deposit pee and poop? Not so appealing.

But soon, I know that old urge will come back, I'll rediscover my belief that having a dog is incredibly beneficial for children, and I will join my kids in their puppy petition. My husband is bracing himself for being truly outnumbered.

If you are similarly considering a family dog, here are some questions you might want to discuss with your family.

  1. Are we home often enough to care for a pet and do we have time to train one?
  2. How much home destruction are we prepared for due to shedding, chewing, and accidents?
  3. Are we prepared for the financial realities of owning a dog, including food, medical care, and potential boarding whenever we travel?
  4. Are we ready to take care of a puppy, or would an older dog be better for our lifestyle?
  5. What breed makes the most sense for our family, and are we sure that breed is good with young children?
  6. Have we observed our children with dogs enough to feel comfortable that they are prepared?
  7. Are our children willing and able to help with the responsibilities that come with owning a pet?

How to Make Mesmerizing Marbled Fondant Icing For Cookies and Beyond

[Homemade] Marbled Sugar Cookies with Touch of Gold from food

One look at a marbled cookie, and you'll be inspired to make one for yourself immediately. But the question is, how do get such a perfect and realistic marble effect? The answer is simpler than you may think, and the secret ingredient is fondant. As Reddit user IAmaChook, who posted these gorgeous marbled cookies on Reddit, explained, all you need for the cookies is fondant, food coloring, and gold luster dust, which is an edible decorating powder.

After many people inquired about her mesmerizing cookies, the Reddit user said, "To achieve the marble effect, I colored different balls of fondant multiple shades of gray and white. (I'm not a fan of the taste of fondant either, I know.) I rolled the different balls of fondant into long ropes. Twisted the ropes together, folded them, and then rolled them out with a rolling pin. You can repeat the twisting and rolling method again to achieve an even more marbled effect. I painted the gold on using luster dust."

If you can't wait to recreate these at home using your favorite colors for marbling, here's a step-by-step breakdown of how you can.

  1. Start with a basic fondant recipe or buy your own.
  2. Separate the fondant into balls and dye each one the color of your choice.
  3. Roll the fondant into long ropes, twist them together, fold them into a shorter stack, and roll the stack out with a rolling pin. The different colors will start to bleed into each other, creating the swirled, marbled effect.
  4. Once you bake your sugar cookies and allow them to cool, cut out a perfect circle of marbled fondant using a biscuit cutter or a glass. To add the fondant cutout to each cookie, spread a layer of buttercream frosting on the cookie to act as a glue. Combine luster dust with water (or vodka, which dries faster), and paint your desired amount on each cookie using a thin paint brush.
  5. Marvel at your creation, and enjoy!

After Seeing Pictures of This Bob Ross Painting Party, You'll Want to Throw One Too

For his birthday, Chris Nervegna threw an epic birthday party inspired by one unlikely person: Bob Ross. Yes, the magical painting instructor and host of The Joy of Painting was the subject of this amazing birthday party. Chris then shared pictures of his gleeful painting party in a tweet, shown below, that has since gone viral. At press time, the tweet has over 32,000 retweets and 108,000 "likes."

In the pictures, Chris and his friends can be seen watching the host's 1991 series Beauty Is Everywhere - currently available on Netflix - and recreating his paintings bit by bit. In the final picture, everyone proudly flaunts their finished works of art.

Chris quickly inspired many others to throw similar painting parties with their friends. After receiving so much positive feedback, Chris tweeted, "I LOVE seeing thousands of tweets of people saying they're gonna throw Bob Ross parties now. So wild my birthday was so inspirational!"

As it turns out, Bob Ross-inspired painting parties aren't entirely rare, either. Someone on Twitter, in fact, responded to Chris's tweet and shared pictures from their own painting party.

On Reddit, one user provided helpful instructions for throwing an inspiring painting party. This person recommended you break your guests off into two teams, have every player on the team paint for approximately two minutes before rotating players, and then see which teams ends up with the best painting. Wigs and smocks are encouraged. The host added, "Keep painting those happy little trees, folks!"

Detox Naturally With These 3 Winter Ingredients

These seasonal ingredients not only taste good, but they also have natural detoxing properties. Learn which Winter ingredients can help cleanse the body and how to incorporate them into your next meal.

Beets

For those times when my body feels heavy or weighed down, my doctor always recommends beets. Their fiber increases the production of antioxidant enzymes in the liver, helping the body eliminate bile and other toxic substances. Sometimes simple is best, like this recipe for roasted beets.

Leafy Greens

Dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale, and chicory are full of essential nutrients like vitamins A and C, but it's the chlorophyll levels that help the body detox and alkalize. To take in all the cleansing properties of leafy greens, it's best to enjoy them raw; try POPSUGAR Food's recipe for a shredded kale and brussels sprouts salad.

Cabbage

Believed by many to have good-luck properties, cabbage (and other cruciferous vegetables) promotes healthy liver function, stimulating the body's natural detoxification process. This Winter, we can't stop eating the rainbow cabbage salad with tahini-lemon dressing.

Victoria Beckham Wears This 1 Comfy Shoe When Prepping For Fashion Week

At one point in time, Victoria Beckham was known for her extreme dedication to high heels. This is the women who in 2008 told the UK's GMTV, "I just can't concentrate in flats."

Oh, how times have changed. Now Victoria has wholeheartedly embraced the flat shoe. She's so into the style that she's taken to wearing sneakers when she isn't, say, leaving a SoulCycle class. She raised a few eyebrows - and impressed some people - when she took her bow at her New York Fashion Week show last year wearing . . . every fashion girl's favorite sneaker, the Adidas Stan Smith.

Beyond Victoria loving the look and the comfort of the beloved Stan Smith, it's also a good business alignment: her husband, David Beckham, has been a rep for the brand for a number of years. It turns out she's loved her Stan Smiths for a few months now and has even shared an Instagram photo of herself wearing a pair next to her son Brooklyn.

Now Victoria's back in NYC, preparing for her Fall 2017 show in none other than the Adidas Superstar. Read on to take a look at her casual ensemble that of course comes complete with a luxe touch: silk trousers, dark sunglasses, and a tailored coat. Then get a glimpse at Victoria's very first Adidas debut and shop the style ahead.

Bill Nye Saves the World Looks Like the TV Show Every '90s Kid Is Going to Obsess Over

In the trailer, it looks like Bill Nye is going to host a fun and informative talk show with different celebrity guests like Tim Gunn, Karlie Kloss, Zach Braff, and others. The show will tackle different topics like sex, global warming, genetically modified organisms (GMO), and more. Watch the trailer below.

Naturally, the internet completely lost it now that its childhood hero is coming back to TV.

3 Methods For Making Matcha

There is something wonderfully ceremonial about making tea, especially matcha, or finely ground Japanese green tea. Making matcha is a little more complicated than dipping a tea bag into hot water; the emerald-green powder is quickly whisked into a frothy, thick brew. Much like whipping cream, the trick requires a little bit of practice, but we've rounded up a few methods with pictures to help you develop matcha with a beautiful layer of foam.

A traditional Japanese method for preparing matcha calls for a bamboo whisk with superfine tines; however, home cooks can also hack the process using a mini immersion blender or whisk. And while the Japanese take their matcha "green," some drinkers may find the unadulterated mixture too bitter and grassy for their liking. That's why we've included a quick latte recipe for easy matcha drinking. Take a look at three ways to make matcha.
