Ruth Negga showed up to the Oscars red carpet in a stunning long-sleeved red lace dress by Valentino. The actress accessorized her sophisticated look with Irene Neuwirth crown and earrings, covered in rubies.

The most notable accessory, however, was a small blue ribbon that Ruth attached to her dress. The ribbon represents solidarity with the American Civil Liberties Union. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Casey Affleck have also been spotted wearing the ribbons on award season red carpets, and you can bet you'll see plenty more tonight.

Ruth is up for best actress for her performance in Loving, a historical drama about an interracial couple who were the plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, which made interracial marriage legal on a federal level.

Olivia Culpo's "Lavender Smoked" Eye Shadow Look Is Instagram Gold

When I saw Olivia Culpo's purple eye makeup for the 2017 Oscars on my Instagram feed, I gasped! She looked incredible with a halo of violet shadow around her brown eyes, tight dark eyeliner, and lush lashes paired with dewy, bronzy skin and perfectly outlined neutral lip.

The artistic makeup was done by Sir John (who is Beyoncé's makeup artist), and he captioned the look on Instagram: "This is how we do," dubbing his creation: "lavender smoked eyes."

He shed more light on the post in a press release from L'Oréal Paris. "We decided to go for a lavender wash on the eyes, nude lips and glowing skin to complement Olivia's vintage-inspired dress," he said. "I would call this look Ice Princess meets Great Gatsby."

The makeup pro relied on Infallible Paints Eye Shadow in Shady Violet ($8) and Colour Riche Pocket Palette in Violet Amour ($9). He applied the purple colors all around hey eyes, adding the lighter shade of the Infallible Paints Shadow to under her lower lash line.

That flawless neutral lip is Colour Riche Lip Liner in Au Naturale ($6), drawn all over her pout. It is topped with Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss in Bare Attraction ($8).

Olivia's sleek ponytail was done by stylist Justine Marjan, who is known for wrapping updos with fabric. It looks like this was done on Olivia's hair, and it's a chic alternative for a rubber band. We also love her wet side-swept bangs.

Disney Created a Room That Can Charge Any Gadget - Without a Single Wire

Disney isn't just tinkering away at creating Star Wars Land and bringing you one-of-a-kind experiences on cruises. The latest invention from Disney Research is a gadget that can charge your phone wirelessly - without a single wire or additional product.

The three-person team composed of Disney researchers Matthew Chabalko, Mohsen Shahmohammadi, and Alanson Sample created a room that can seamlessly charge any device - and deliver power to TVs or other products that normally need to be plugged in. To begin, the team built a room with aluminum panel walls, floor, and ceiling. In the middle of the room, a large copper pipe sits with capacitors (that regulate the electromagnetic frequency) to create an electromagnetic field. With these structures, electricity can continuously run through the loop, creating a "magnetic field" that can "deliver kilowatts of power," otherwise known as quasistatic cavity resonance (QSCR). Essentially, this technology lets you enter the room and, without doing a single thing, your phone will automatically start charging.

With a room like this, you can decorate it however you want but still be able to charge wirelessly. You can learn more about QSCR in the video below, or read the team's findings in a paper submitted to the journal PLOS One.

A Simple Breakdown of What Moonlight Is About

While the glitz and glamour of La La Land has earned the larger-than-life musical a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations, a heartbreakingly beautiful underdog may be giving it a run for its money. Moonlight, nominated for eight Oscars, draws on the lives of director Barry Jenkins and writer Tarell Alvin McCraney and is based on McCraney's stage play, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. It tells the story of Chiron, a young black man growing up in a rough Miami neighborhood and evolving from a shy child to a complex, troubled adult.

Act 1: "Little"

Chiron's story is told in three parts, and the main character is portrayed by three different actors, depicting him at varying milestone ages. Alex Hibbert opens the film as a quiet, school-age Chiron, who people call "Little." He's bullied by classmates and mistreated by his sole caretaker, his single mother, Paula (Naomie Harris), who is addicted to drugs and wavers between neglect and abuse. Young Chiron finds an unexpected father figure in Juan (Mahershala Ali), the kingpin of the local drug trade. It's in the home that Juan shares with his girlfriend, Teresa (Janelle Monáe), where Chiron feels safe, cared for, and comforted. This haven, however, is shattered once young Chiron realizes the role Juan plays in his own mother's drug addiction.

Act 2: "Chiron"

Amid the bullying that forces Chiron (now going by his real name) into isolation, he finds a friend in classmate Kevin (played first by Jaden Piner and later as Jharrel Jerome and André Holland). The bond they forge through the film's second chapter, however, is broken as a peer named Terrel (Patrick Decile) sets his sights on mercilessly abusing a teenage Chiron (now played by Ashton Sanders). The complexity of Chiron and Kevin's relationship reaches its peak during an intimate encounter that, for the first time, forces Chiron to confront his sexual identity. This continued struggle with his sexuality is central to Chiron's story, and his initial exploration with Kevin causes confusion. It's followed by an act of betrayal that leads to a pivotal turning point.

Act 3: "Black"

It's in the film's third act that Chiron's story comes full circle as he struggles to make sense of his adult life and find peace in the fractured and fragmented relationships of his past. Trevante Rhodes portrays this grown-up version of Chiron, called "Black," facing the fallout of his complex, painful youth.

While the question "What is Moonlight about?" can be succinctly answered in chronological plot points ("He is gay. He grows up. The end," as Kristen Page-Kirby teased in The Washington Post), the true answer can't be conveyed in a simple synopsis. "That's what happens in Moonlight, but that's ultimately not what it's about," Page-Kirby continued. "What it's really about, though, is what it's like to live that life."

Janelle Monáe's Red Carpet Dress Is Bound to Make History at the Oscars

Janelle Monáe's quickly established herself as a red carpet trendsetter, with an inimitable sense of style. With a big night ahead of her (the actress's films Moonlight and Hidden Figures are nominated in several major categories), the focus will be not only be on her movies, but also her debut Oscars look. We tapped her stylist Maeve Reilly on what we can expect to see from Janelle tonight.

"We have a lot of favorite brands that we love, but obviously if they [designers] do a collection that doesn't include black and white it doesn't work for us," she said. "Her dress tonight is definitely an Oscars dress and there would be nowhere else in the world she could wear this dress."

Though we have yet to see Janelle's dress, we can expect it to be black and white - given her past red carpet choices - and it will be straight off the runway. "We've been on two press tours for Moonlight and Hidden Figures so it's definitely our grand finale," Maeve revealed. "I definitely woke up this morning feeling like a kid on Christmas morning." Stay tuned for Janelle's Oscars look because it will definitely be unforgettable.

This Is Why You Won't See Natalie Portman at the Oscars Tonight

Despite a best actress nomination for her brilliant turn as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in Jackie, Natalie Portman won't be at the Oscars tonight. No, it's not because she's joined Matt Damon in feuding with the award show's host, Jimmy Kimmel. The actress is currently in the late stages of her second pregnancy, so she'll likely be enjoying the Oscars from the comfort of her couch. "Due to my pregnancy, I am unable to attend the Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards," she said in a statement. "I feel so lucky to be honored among my fellow nominees and wish them the most beautiful of weekends." This is Natalie's third Oscar nomination, following her 2010 best actress win for Black Swan.

Olivia Culpo's Custom Marchesa Gown Doesn't Only Look Good - It Gives Back, Too

With the 2017 Academy Awards red carpet heating up, there's one big question on everyone's mind: who's wearing what? Enter your best guesses, but we have a solid favorite look so far: a custom Marchesa gown for fashion influencer Olivia Culpo. The dress, created by Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman for Stella Artois's Buy a Lady a Drink Campaign, was unveiled on the red carpet.

The dress incorporated glass beads made from Stella Artois's limited-edition chalices - for each one sold, clean water is delivered to developing countries - and the look is the first Marchesa gown to ever be made out of glasswear. "It's giving back in style," said Olivia when we asked her about the partnership. The Marchesa dress, it seems, is already promising to steal the red carpet spotlight with its powerful backstory.

Tom Hanks and More Celebrities Pay Tribute to Bill Paxton After His Death

Bill Paxton died at age 61 on Saturday, leaving behind an onscreen legacy. Throughout his life in the spotlight, Paxton gained the respect and admiration of his costars and fellow actors and filmmakers. Tributes from his peers have been flooding in, and one of the first people to speak out about his death has been director James Cameron, who worked with Paxton on a number of films, including Titanic, Aliens, and Apollo 13. NASA Just Discovered a New Solar System That Could Sustain Life

NASA's latest discovery will leave you in total shock and awe. The agency announced on Feb. 22 that it's discovered a whole new solar system with seven plants - and three of them are within the "habitable zone."

The solar system is called TRAPPIST-1, named after the telescope The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST), which helped find the first three planets. It's similar to our own solar system; it consists of seven planets, is 40 light years away, and orbits around a giant star (though this one is smaller). Three of the planets in this system exist in the "habitable zone, an area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water." NASA believes that all seven planets might have liquid water on their surface, but it's most likely the three planets closest orbiting around the star definitely have it - making life possible.

Astronomers also believe that these planets could be "tidally locked to their star," which would mean that one side is always day and the other night. It could also signify that these planets have different weather than we do here on Earth.

This is the first time astronomers have ever made such a discovery. "Answering the question 'are we alone' is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, in a press release.

The image above shows an artist concept of what the solar system could look like. The illustration below is another artist concept of what the surface of a planet could be like in this system.

You can learn more about the TRAPPIST-1 system by watching the video below. All these findings are published in the science journal Nature.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling's Under-the-Radar Romance, in Pictures

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have been together for nearly six years and have a habit of keeping their relationship extremely private. While it's unclear exactly when these two started dating, the couple was first linked back in September 2011 when they were spotted enjoying a magical date at Disneyland. Since then, Eva and Ryan have shared a handful of sweet moments, starred in a movie together, and welcomed their two kids, daughters Esmeralda and Amada. Most recently, Ryan dedicated his award to "sweetheart" Eva at the Golden Globes. Here's hoping Eva accompanies Ryan to the Oscars on Feb. 26.

Why Lin-Manuel Miranda Will Be Making History If He Wins an Oscar

On Jan. 24, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year's highly anticipated nominations. Among the nominees was Lin-Manuel Miranda, who scored the nod in the best original song category for his song "How Far I'll Go" from Disney's Moana.

The Hamilton creator collaborated with fellow songwriters Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina for the Moana soundtrack, which includes songs both in English and Tokelauan, a Polynesian language. The song that's up for a nomination was performed by Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced the movie's title character, in addition to Alessia Cara, who sang a version that plays during the end credits.

If Lin-Manuel wins the Oscar on Feb. 26, he will officially become an esteemed EGOT winner. Let's break it down: he has an Emmy Award for outstanding original music and lyrics for his opening performance at the 67th Tony Awards, three Tony Awards for Hamilton and In the Heights, and two Grammy Awards for the respective Hamilton and In the Heights studio albums.

Not only would the win grant him EGOT status, but it would also make the 37-year-old multihyphenate the youngest person to receive the honor. (Robert Lopez currently holds that title after he won an Oscar for Frozen in 2014 when he was 39.) Not only that, but Lin-Manuel would be the fastest person to do it! He won his first Tony Award in 2008, so that means he would have achieved his big EGOT win in just nine years.

Following the big announcement, Lin-Manuel took to Twitter to share his thoughts. While his first tweet just included a stunned emoji, he later responded to radio personality Lin Brehmer, who pointed out that Lin-Manuel would technically reach GEMPOT status since he is also a Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur Genius Grant winner.

While it would be so exciting to see Lin-Manuel make history, he's in a tough category that also includes two songs from the wildly popular La La Land. We'll all have to just tune in on Feb. 26.

Selena Gomez Brings Out Her Best Style Every Time It's Time For an Oscars Party

Selena Gomez hasn't yet attended the Oscars, but she never misses the afterparty. The star has stolen the show at Vanity Fair's annual post-Academy Awards bash with her impeccable style from her first appearance in Dolce & Gabbana in 2011 - and that's saying a lot considering most winners and nominees beeline to the party as soon as the ceremony is over.

The "Hands to Myself" singer didn't disappoint when she appeared on the red carpet for 2016's affair at the Wallis Annenberg Center For the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills either, in a Louis Vuitton metallic gown and sultry eye makeup. Take a look at that dress and more by looking through, and get excited for Selena's 2017 look.

6 Actors With Lots of Oscar Nominations but No Oscar (Yet)

On Feb. 26, The Academy will hand out four statues to the actors deemed to have the best performances of the year, generally making lifelong dreams come true for these stars. These stars can end their own personal pattern of being an Oscar bridesmaid and never a bride, but that pattern of multiple nominations without ever winning is the scourge of many of Hollywood's finest. Wondering who is a Susan Lucci of the Oscars ever since Leo finally took his Academy Award home? Keep reading to find out which stars have had at least four nominations in their past but never brought one home.

Here's What the New Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Oatmeals Taste Like

General Mills released two new instant oatmeal flavors inspired by your favorite cereals: Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Currently, these offerings are only available in Canada, but POPSUGAR snagged a few packages so we could review them for you. Spoiler: they taste just as awesome as you'd expect.

Lucky Charms

The Lucky Charms oatmeal smells as comforting as the cereal. We cooked ours with milk, resulting in a more marshmallow-y and rich flavor. I personally preferred the hot oatmeal to the oat cereal. You get the marbits and iconic Lucky Charms flavor and load up on your whole grains. It's a win-win-win. One thing worth noting, the cereal is sweet but not overwhelmingly so. It only contains nine grams of sugar compared to a packet of Quaker Oats, which has 12.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Oatmeal

This oatmeal also tasted just like Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Some tasters thought it translated into oatmeal better. It had all the cinnamon-y, buttery flavor with a slight saltiness. Don't stir in the crunchy toppings so as to maintain the "crunch" component. I'm inspired to serve my oatmeal this way - loaded up on the cinnamon, butter, and spoonful of sugar. You can't go wrong.

It's with a heavy heart that I tell you General Mills doesn't have any plans to expand this release to America, but you could always try voicing your excitement about the product by calling the General Mills Consumer Services line (1-800-248-7310). In the meantime, all you marshmallow fanatics can eat your feelings with the new Peeps-flavored Oreos, which tasters have likened to Lucky Charms in cookie form.

A Complete Rundown of Meryl Streep's Red Carpet Style

We can sum up Meryl Streep's red carpet style in one word: elegant. She's been attending award shows since the '70s, which means she's been honing her signature look for quite some time. You won't ever see the actress in a flamboyant dress or barely-there midi; instead, she keeps her outfits modest and timeless.

Just what types of dresses does Meryl gravitate toward? In particular, she has a preference for draping and sleeves, going with designer Lanvin time and time again. In addition, Meryl has long belted her gowns to show off her waistline - a trick no doubt she learned from the pros over the years.

But just because she sticks to modest choices doesn't mean she won't take a fashion risk here and there. She's done the plunging neckline look and worn off-the-shoulder pieces on several occasions. She hired Lupita Nyong'o's stylist Micaela Erlanger to step up her outfit game for the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, where she wore a custom-made Givenchy gown.

In fact, since Givenchy has a standing tradition of dressing only one star for an awards show, Meryl was the only one to wear the fashion house on the red carpet. In true Meryl fashion, she pulled the look off gracefully.

7 Things Your Kids Will Remember About You When They're Grown Up

There are plenty of times my friends or family reference specific moments in my childhood, and I just can't for the life of me remember what they're talking about - it's very interesting what we end up remembering about our lives. There are, however, certain things I can perfectly pinpoint about my childhood, no matter what age I was at the time, like how my mom reacted to my grandfather passing, the chunk of time my dad was working in another state at a new job and missed my school play, and the way my mom would greet my dad when he got home from work.

Because there are certain things that tend to stick with kids as they grow up, these seven things are worth thinking about as you raise your littles.

9 Cast Members Who Are Coming Back For The Vampire Diaries Finale

The final season of The Vampire Diaries has been full of fun throwbacks, and it seems like the finale will be just as nostalgic. Not only will Nina Dobrev be back, but there are quite a few other familiar faces returning as well. Even though we're not entirely sure how Elena will break out of her sleeping curse, Julie Plec has confirmed a handful of details about how the series will come to a close - including the death of a major character. Perhaps, that's the reason for some of these big reunions? As you count down the weeks until the finale, familiarize yourself with the returning cast here.

Nicole Kidman Plans to Shock You With Her Oscars Dress

Nicole Kidman is one of those stars who definitely stays true to herself when it comes to fashion. While she has the tendency to change up her look, it's very much to suit her mood. From the graceful way she's always moved on the red carpet - since she made her mark on Hollywood in the '90s alongside Tom Cruise - it's clear Nicole's never uncomfortable in what she's wearing.

"I have no problem being divisive," she revealed in Porter magazine, when asked about her 2017 Oscars dress. As you scroll through her most memorable style moments below, you might notice Nicole's tendency to switch things up. While Kidman has preferred a sleek cut, like the tailored suits that she so often goes back to, her dresses have transitioned from glamorous to avant-garde.

Some might call her more recent gowns (frequently debuted at events with her current husband Keith Urban), a little bit quirky, with plenty of sequins, embellishments, embroideries, and capes. Nicole is always daring to try new trends as if they were made for her to flaunt, and she embraces the spotlight with ease. Read on to backtrack Nicole's most flavorful outfits.

This Muslim Woman Overheard 1 Dad Talking to His Girls About Their Differences

When Rabia Ahmad was eating dinner a restaurant, she noticed a dad sitting with his two daughters nearby. She could overhear their conversation and was fascinated by the little girls' inquisitive nature.

The children were asking their dad about everything - including about what Rabia was wearing. This Muslim woman continued to listen in as this father carefully responded in a way that warmed her heart and taught his daughters an important lesson. Rabia recounted his poignant answer on Love What Matter's Facebook page: "There are different religions and cultures and languages. We have to learn about them."

He then shared a personal experience with his girls about when he traveled abroad and learned to speak Spanish. This encounter reminded Rabia of a Harvard University study that found that not only do children who are exposed to racism tend to accept and embrace it when they are as young as 3 years old but this can happen in just a few days.

Instead of perpetuating hatred or feeling awkward in the situation, this dad used his children's curiosity as a powerful learning opportunity. "This is how you teach love, acceptance, understanding and respect. It starts from an early age," Rabia wrote. "Kids listen and imitate their parents' views and behaviors. You are their role model."

This Elder Wand Theory Will Have You Questioning Everything You Thought You Knew

Harry Potter fans know one of the most rewarding perks of rereading the series on the regular are the new details you discover each time. If you're really lucky, you might just discover something mind-blowing. This is what happened to Reddit user Wmdonovan23 as they reread Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and found that the elder wand might've belonged to Voldemort - not Dumbledore.

Here's how this theory explains the process of how the elder wand changes ownership. In the books, the elder wand changes ownership by conquering the previous owner. With this logic, it's clear how Draco became the owner of the elder wand, since he disarmed Dumbledore. However, the alternative theory traces the elder wand's roots back to when Grindelwald stole the wand from Gregorovitch. In that scene, Grindelwald merely steals the wand and attempts to stun Gregorovitch. So if you follow the logic of elder wand ownership, this means that Grindelwald was never really the true master of the elder wand and neither was Dumbledore, after he defeated him.

So who is the true owner? Voldemort, of course! Voldemort found Gregorovitch, killed him, and became the new master of the elder wand. But as Reddit user Wmdonovan23 states, the wand never worked properly for him because he was "less of a wizard," considering three of his horcruxes were already destroyed at this point. He was still the true owner.

The end result is the same. Harry ends up becoming the true master because he did defeat Voldemort and overpowered him - not because he stole the wand from Draco Malfoy. Convinced yet?

This theory was fiercely debated years before on a forum called Science Fiction and Fantasy. One user named Julian brought up the same questions in 2012 - and users here decided that the laws around ownership of the elder wand are very different. The elder wand simply responds to the more powerful wizard who takes the wand - no matter how it's done. So, even though Grindelwald stole the wand, Gregorovitch was still left without one, rendering him powerless and leaving the elder wand to declare allegiance to its new, more powerful owner, discussed user Manishearth. User Janoma chimed in to say that this idea still applies when Harry takes the wand from Draco, also leaving him powerless and making the elder wand choose Harry as its new owner.

J.K. Rowling has previously addressed this elder wand confusion, telling Today that, "To truly own the Elder Wand, which means to receive the full benefits, double-edged though it is, of all its power, you have to have conquered the previous owner." However, Rowling never addressed the ownership path before Dumbledore and Draco in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Pretty much, we're going to need Rowling to give us some answers STAT.

5 Photos of Your Kids That You Shouldn't Post to Social Media

If anyone knows how tempting it is to share our kids' hysterical, adorable, or unreal moments with our entire social networks, it's us. We get it. Proud parents want to shout their children's accomplishments - regardless of how big or small - from the (virtual) rooftop. But the Internet is a vast and potentially scary place, and it's our duty to protect our families. As nice as it would be if those privacy settings were a sufficient barrier, there are still caveats to every safety net that we have to be conscious of. Here, five times that parents should hold off on sharing their kids' snaps with the Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter-verse.

Every Win and Nomination La La Land Has Scored So Far

La La Land has already made history, breaking the record for most Golden Globes won by a single film after snagging all seven of the awards it was nominated for. In January, the spectacular film was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, tying with All About Eve and Titanic for the most nominations of all time. 24 Actors Who Won Oscars For Playing Real People

It seems that whenever an actor takes on a famous face in history - or even a lesser-known person with a great true story - it only ups the chances of taking home Oscar gold. Just last year, Leonardo DiCaprio was added to the long list of actors who have taken home an award for playing a real person, thanks to his role in The Revenant. This year, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman, Meryl Streep, and Andrew Garfield all received nods for playing real people. There are many more among the Hollywood elite who have won a statue for spot-on portrayals of real people (so many that we can't even list them all here!), but take a peek at this short list of memorable performances.

Check Out This Year's First-Time Oscar Nominees

Every year, the Oscars bring a rush of enthusiasm about Hollywood's most buzzed-about cinematic masterpieces. This time around, the list of nominees features quite a bit of excitement. In addition to a notably diverse group compared to 2016, Viola Davis also became the first black actress to get three nods, and La La Land earned 14 nominations, thereby tying the record held by Titanic, Ben-Hur, and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. As always, there's something else to note about this year's potential winners: 10 of them are vying for their very first Oscar! Keep reading to see all the first-time nominees.

Just How Many Black Actors Have Won an Oscar? The Number Is Disturbingly Low

With nominees like Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Ruth Negga, and Mahershala Ali rounding out the acting categories, Sunday night's Academy Awards could potentially deliver the most diverse set of winners in years. The Oscars have been plagued by obvious race issues since they began in 1929, and things seemingly came to a head with the #OscarsSoWhite discussion a couple of years ago; the overwhelming lack of diversity in nominees in both 2015 and 2016 resulted in Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs taking bigger, more noticeable steps to double the number of diverse members in its voting body by 2020.

Nevertheless, a black actor (the incomparable Sidney Poitier) wasn't awarded until 1964, and it was only in 2002 that Halle Berry became the first black woman to win a best actress trophy. So, just how many black actors have won Oscars over the years? Fourteen. A whopping fourteen distinguished, talented people in 87 years. Scroll through to see who they are and learn about the records they've broken.

1940, Hattie McDaniel

The Gone With the Wind star made history when she became the first African-American person to ever win an Oscar. The film's director, David O. Selznick, had to call in a special favor just to have McDaniel allowed into the building (the Ambassador Hotel, where the ceremony was held, did not allow black people), and instead of getting to sit with the rest of the cast and crew, she was escorted to a small table far away and against a wall, which is where she accepted her best supporting actress award.

Thanks to his stellar performance in Lilies of the Field, Poitier became the first black male to win an Oscar in general but also the best actor award.

1983, Louis Gossett Jr.

He is the first black male to win the best supporting actor award for his role in An Officer and a Gentleman.

1990 and 2002, Denzel Washington

Washington took home the best supporting actor trophy for Glory, making him the second black actor to do so. When he won his best actor Oscar for Training Day in 2002, Washington shared a powerful moment of solidarity with Sidney Poitier, who was given a Academy Honorary Award at the ceremony. Washington is the most nominated black actor in Oscars history with seven acting nods since 1987.

1991, Whoopi Goldberg

The comedian won best supporting actress for her role as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost, and the award was presented to her by Denzel Washington. She had been nominated once before for The Color Purple in 1986, making her the first African-American female to earn two acting nominations.

1997, Cuba Gooding Jr.

Yes, before he hit the small screen in The People vs. O.J. Simpson, Gooding won the best supporting actor award for Jerry Maguire. He was only 29 at the time, making him the youngest African-American male actor to win an Academy Award.

2002, Halle Berry

Berry's win for Monster's Ball marked the second time a black woman took home an Oscar and the first time two black actors won in leading role categories in the same year (Denzel Washington also won for Training Day). She gave a heartfelt, emotional speech that is memorable for its earnest homage to the women who came before her. "This moment is so much bigger than me," Berry told the crowd through tears. "This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox. And it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened."

2005, Jamie Foxx

Foxx swept award season for his outstanding portrayal of Ray Charles in Ray, and his Oscar win added to the pile. He also became the first African-American actor to receive two acting nominations in the same year (he also scored a best supporting actor nod for Collateral).

2005, Morgan Freeman

After nabbing the best supporting actor award for Million Dollar Baby, Freeman became the oldest black actor to win an Oscar at 67 years old.

2007, Forest Whitaker

Whitaker beat out Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith when he won the best actor award for his role in The Last King of Scotland.

2007, Jennifer Hudson

Her performance in Dreamgirls nabbed Hudson a best supporting actress win at just 25 years old, making her the youngest African-American actor to win an Oscar. It also happened to be her first-ever movie role.

2010, Mo'Nique

The comedic actress surprised audiences with her very, very serious role in Precious, for which she won the best supporting actress award.

2012, Octavia Spencer

The actress, who is nominated this year for her role in Hidden Figures, won the best supporting actress award for The Help. The movie is the third to produce nominees for both best supporting and best actress (Viola Davis).

2014, Lupita Nyong'o

For her role as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, the Kenyan actress became the first black African to be nominated for an acting Oscar and win in any category. It also marked special significance for being Nyong'o's first major movie role.

Meryl Streep Is the Queen of Award Season, and She Has the Gold to Prove It

Meryl Streep was honored with the coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globe Awards this year. The annual award is given for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment," and past recipients include George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, and Morgan Freeman. It comes as no surprise that Streep was chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as this year's recipient given the fact that she has been working in Hollywood for over 30 years, has an impressive award history, and has taken on a plethora of roles, including Joanna Kramer in 1979's Kramer vs. Kramer and Miranda Priestly in 2006's The Devil Wears Prada. Not to mention, Streep also holds a total of 30 Golden Globe nominations, making her the most nominated star in the show's history. In honor of her accomplishments (including her 2017 Oscar nomination!), we're taking a look at all the gold Streep has won over the years.

Watch the Best Oscars Acceptance Speech Ever, Courtesy of Rita Moreno in 1962

Rita Moreno paved the way for Latinas in entertainment 55 years ago. The Puerto Rican-born Hollywood trailblazer won best supporting actress at the Oscars in 1962 for her powerful (and frequently emulated) role as Anita in West Side Story, and as one of five Oscar-winning Latino actors - seriously, only five - she's still a huge influencer in both our community and the industry. (Maybe you've seen her as Rogelio De La Vega's mom, Liliana, on Jane the Virgin or as Lydia in Netflix's One Day at a Time?)

But perhaps the most endearing thing about her Oscars win was her acceptance speech - or lack thereof. In preparation for the 89th Academy Awards on Feb. 26, we unearthed the black-and-white clip of the groundbreaking moment in history, and it's a must see.

Watch Rita, wearing an adorable updo and structured dress, fast-walk up to the stage, smile wide, and say, "I can't believe it! Good lord . . . I'll leave you with that!"

Mic drop.
