Trust Us, This Badass Quote Will Be Your New Mantra
Taking care of yourself is easier said than done. So often we put our prescribed roles first, whether that be mother, sister, partner, or friend. We're so busy striving to be the best at each of these things, it's easy to neglect ourselves in the process.
During a recent Adidas women's panel I attended, I was reminded of how important it is to think of your own well-being and to do this often. As Robin Arzon - Adidas ambassador, ultramarathoner, and Peloton instructor - passionately told us, "Self-care is the most selfless act you can do for everyone who encounters your energy. You are going to be a better sister, a better partner, and better co-worker."
As Robin put this thought out to us, it became clear to everyone listening that you can't come close to being great in any role if you forget yourself in the process. Self-care is not an indulgence or something to feel guilty about - it's a necessary action for being and feeling our best. And as women, we shouldn't have to make any apologies for this. Be OK with posting a post-workout selfie. Be unapologetic about wearing your workout gear all the time. And don't feel the need to defend the time you take for yourself at the gym, meal prepping, or meditating.
And in those moments that the guilt creeps in or you find it hard to justify "the luxury" to yourself, remember this mantra that Robin shared with us: "You are the CEO of your body and you should be boss about that sh*t."
It's a thought I've come back to several times since that day and what has pushed me through workouts where I feel like giving up, or worst, where I beat myself up for not being somewhere else. Think of the kind of #girlboss you want for yourself or the kind you would want to be to someone else. Now say to yourself, "I am the CEO of my body and I'm going to be boss about that sh*t."

You're 3 Ingredients Away From Clearer, Brighter Skin
While we love testing the hottest masks and skin care treatments on the market, nothing can beat a no-frills DIY. If you're struggling with a dull, blemish-prone complexion, whip up an aspirin mask. The effective ingredient in aspirin is chemically similar to salicylic acid, which helps exfoliate skin. Just mix the over-the-counter medicine with three ingredients (you already have them!) for an affordable treatment that really works. Use it as a resurfacing paste, or leave it on for about five minutes as a mask. No matter how you use it, you'll see clearer, softer, more radiant skin.
You will need:
- Four or five uncoated, plain aspirin pills (Advil, Aleve, Tylenol, and the like won't work)
- A tablespoon or two of lukewarm water
- Honey or plain yogurt (optional)
Directions:
Mix the aspirin with just enough water to make a paste. If you want a thicker mask, then add a dollop of honey; if you prefer a more soothing mask, then some plain yogurt can do the trick. Apply the mask in a thin layer on your face, then allow it to dry. Remove it with warm water, rinsing away the mask in gentle circular motions.
Please note: Some people are allergic to aspirin, so try a patch test on your forearm before spreading this all over your face.

The Kids From Moonlight Go Back to School After Their Oscar Win - Watch the Darling Video
Alex Hibbert and Jaden Piner may be Oscar-winning actors now, but they're still just regular kids from Miami. After taking home Academy Awards when their film, Moonlight, won best picture, the 12-year-olds got back to their normal lives and showed up for school like it was any other day. Both Alex (who played a young Chiron) and Jaden (who played Chiron's childhood friend, Kevin) go to Norland Middle School, where they and their drama teacher, Tanisha Cidel, auditioned for the movie. When they got to class this week, a red carpet was literally rolled out for them. "Everybody was saying congratulations and everything and it felt wonderful," Jaden told the local NBC news. Alex added, "Just to see [Moonlight] go and be something as big as this, it's just amazing."
In addition to their proud classmates, the boys are getting even more attention from complete strangers on social media. "My phone is blowing up," Alex said. He also touched on the infamous moment that the Moonlight cast and crew found out they won the coveted award after La La Land was mistakenly announced. "We were like, 'yeah, nice joke,'" he said of the snafu. "But they were like 'serious, you guys got it,' and all I remember, I jumped over this guy and he was screaming. And I was like, sorry, I just won an award!" Please watch the video above now to see these tiny, delightful Oscar winners.

The Easiest Way to Tell Exactly What Your Future Kids Will Look Like
Ever wonder what your mini mes will look like in the future? Here are some things to think about, from our friends at YourTango.
Fascinating.
Being in a relationship with someone is one of the most wonderful feelings there is. When you're truly and utterly in love with someone, you can't help but look to the future and hope they would be there with you.
If you and your significant other have talked about marriage or raising a family, you are sure to wonder what your kids would look like. Would they have your eyes and her nose? Or would they have his sharp jaw and her full lips? These are typical questions that allow you to let your imagination run wild, imagining that perfect combination of a child.
Lucky for you (and us!), Viralthread has provided a guide to predicting what your future child will look like:
1. Weight strong genes vs. weak genes.
If you're a dark-skinned, curly-haired brunette with dark eyes, big nose, thick lips, and a wide chin, you have the strongest genes of all! You are more likely to pass on one or several of these traits to your future child.
Apologies to redheads or anyone with light-colored straight hair, gray or blue eyes, and light skin, but there is less of a chance of passing these genes on to your future child (unless you and your partner have the same traits - then, obviously, your child will have them, too).
2. Decode your DNA combinations.
Although having strong genes makes it more likely for you to pass on these traits, it's not often the case. There is more to the combination of DNA than having strong genes overpowering the weak. There are patterns. It's not a matter of strong versus weak.
3. Predict their eye color.
As mentioned above, DNA works in patterns. Follow an eye color chart and find out the likelihood of your child getting your eye color or your partner's. Of course, as mentioned before, dark eyes tend to win.
4. Look at your family tree.
As mentioned before, brown hair is a very strong trait. Depending on your family tree, if you are in a family of mostly brunettes, your child will also most likely be a brunette.
So, for example, if you are a brunette with blue eyes and your partner is blonde with brown eyes, your child is most likely to have brown hair and brown eyes.
5. Remember: "Weak" genes can show up in future generations.
So, your kid may not inherit your blonde hair because your partner's brown hair won over. And you may not be able to pass on your blue eyes because your partner's brown eyes won over. However, these so-called "weak" genes can still surprise you by showing up in later generations.
For example, if your brunette and brown-eyed child marries another brunette and brown-eyed, their child may get the "strong" genes or brown hair-brown eyes, but they are also likely to have the blonde and blue eyes genes, too.
6. Try genetic manufacturing.
This is kind of in the lines of meddling with nature, and you may have a different stance when it comes to this. But because of modern technology, you can now pick and choose traits that you want to pass on, and science can make it possible. It also allows the parents to remove handicap traits and genetic diseases passed on.
This is called the Great Genetic Debate and it's quite taboo. But you know what? The beauty of not knowing the future are the surprises. Science may be able to accurately predict or, in the case of Genetic Manufacturing, choose the traits we want our future children to have. But there is still a thrill and a certain treasure in not knowing the future.
Your child may not look like how you imagine them to be, but during that time, it may no longer matter.

Camila Cabello's Style Is Nothing Like It Used to Be - and We're Not Mad About It
It takes just a quick look through Fifth Harmony appearances to notice the girls always coordinated their looks. They wore the same color palette (often black or red) and paid attention to having a running theme through all their styles (they all wore cutouts to the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, for example). But now that Camila Cabello is on her own, it's all different.
The Cuban-American singer, who shocked the world by leaving 5H in late 2016 to concentrate on her solo career, is really showing off her fashion sense this year. So far, we can tell she prefers crop tops to regular shirts, is partial to pieces with a rocker edge, and is, by no means, afraid to experiment. Keep reading to see what else we have observed by checking out her best looks of 2017.
Did Jeffree Star Just Release a Blackface Ad?
Makeup guru Jeffree Star has found himself in hot water after an Asian beauty blogger named Nikita Dragun posted a photo of herself featured in his latest ad with noticeably darker skin. In the caption of the photo, Nikita attributed her golden skin complexion to a highlight she called "Siberian Gold".
Social media users were quick to call out the fact that Nikita's darkened skin tone is considered blackface, which was commonly used in 19th century minstrel shows to promote racial stereotypes and mock the darker skin of African-Americans. Keep reading to see what Nikita's natural skin tone looks like and see why Twitter users are not happy with the controversial ad.

Orange You Confused by This Viral Challenge Involving Showers? Because We Are
Though it's certainly been stated before, the internet is a strange place. Supporting that claim is the latest feel-good challenge that promotes eating an orange in the shower. Why? Well, we're not entirely sure.
It all started over a year ago with a Reddit thread. In that thread, users were asked to share unconventional habits that everyone should try. That's when one user said they start their mornings by eating an orange in the shower. Apparently, the shower is the best place to eat oranges because any stickiness you might normally get on your hands in the peeling process is washed away.
Now, an entire subreddit is dedicated to the quirky preference. It's simply titled Shower Orange. On that page, you'll find countless pictures and stories from people who have fallen in love with the fruit-eating method. According to the rules, grapefruits and posts containing nudity are not allowed. Clementines, tangerines, and blood oranges, however, are all welcome.

9 Major Changes Between Before I Fall the Movie and the Book
We love a good book-to-movie adaptation, but chances are, if you've read the book, you've got an eagle-eye out for the inevitable differences from the pages. Before I Fall is no different; the central story remains the same, but tweaks have been made throughout. Before you panic, Sam is still one of the most popular girls in school, she still dies in a car crash then repeatedly wakes up the next day (though it's not as clear in the film how many times she relives the day), and she still has a sh*tty boyfriend and a supercute guy crushing on her. We chatted directly with author Lauren Oliver about some of the changes - take a look and see if you caught them all!
1. Little things throughout Sam's day are different.
Kent writes her a poem instead of drawing her a sketch, the parking space isn't an issue (no one has to walk .22 miles to get to class), the girls find out about Juliet's suicide from their cells rather than from Ally's mom - all inconsequential details that were likely cut for time and/or the fact that every teenager in America now has their own cell phone.
2. Sam doesn't skip class with Lindsay to go to frozen yogurt.
This is a bit of a larger change because it's a whole side plot in the books. Sam skips class, goes to TCBY with Lindsay, sees Alex and Anna eating at the Chinese restaurant, and that leads to Sam telling Alex's girlfriend about his cheating ways during the party. "You have to make a lot of decisions about what to include in movies cause you have less time," Oliver said during our interview. This was just collateral damage!
3. Anna isn't "the other woman" in a relationship, she's a lesbian.
While the whole Anna/Alex relationship doesn't occur in the film, the writers found another reason for her to be an outcast: the character is a lesbian. So, why was this put in? "There are ways in which my real high school experience did flow into Before I Fall," Oliver said, speaking about how the original Alex and Anna were based on people she knew. She went on to say that more characters became diverse in the movie scrip to reflect how America looks, rather than just her own town. "They included way more diverse casting, which is excellent."
4. Juliet's story goes off-script.
Rather than showing up at the party and calling each girl a "bitch," Juliet whips out more colorful examples in the movie. She calls Lindsay a bitch, while the others are "drunk" and "pathetic." We also don't get to meet Juliet's sister, even though the character who hands Sam her rose (the sister, in the books) is included in the movie. "To me, they're not sisters," said Oliver. "They're just separate characters in that universe. To me, she still has a sister, we just never see her."
5. A lot of small personal details have been dropped.
The girls don't smoke, Lindsay isn't portrayed as bulimic in the film, and the song with which kids used to taunt Sam as a kid is different. Again, filmmakers have to consider a run time and they probably don't want to promote teenage smoking, but there is another reason some of the stuff was cut. "Senior lot and smoking behind the tennis courts and all that stuff, I mean, that was actually just kind of pulled from my own memories of high school," said Oliver. "But it wasn't narratively always the right choice or the right story. I just didn't know how to make different ones."
6. The music is different.
Oliver mentions several songs over the course of the book, including "No More Drama" by Mary J. Blige, which plays every single time Sam relives the day. The music choices are plucked from Oliver's own experiences, but the filmmakers give the soundtrack a bit of an update. Artists like Grimes, Lolawolf, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are used instead.
7. Sam doesn't make out with her Mr. Daimler.
In the book, there's one scandalous day when Sam comes onto Mr. Daimler and he ends up making out with her. It's a turning point because she realizes she's actually disgusted by him and he is a creep, just like Kent has been saying. In the film, she sexily teases him in front of the class, but he doesn't take advantage of her.
8. The timeline with Kent is different.
Sam's pursuit of Kent varies ever so slightly in the film. Events like their kiss happen at different times, and though most of Kent's backstory remains the same, it's Kent's father that had died, rather than his grandfather.
9. Sam has sex with Rob.
This may be the biggest change of all: During one of the days, Sam goes through with losing her virginity to a drunken Rob. "I actually had written a scene like that in my first draft that they made me cut it because they thought it was too upsetting," Oliver said, referring to her book. "It is icky in a way that is realistic and lonely and just a wrong choice, but not out of the realm of what unfortunately many people will experience in their lifetime . . . Then to immediately cut to seeing her have this wonderful interaction with Kent, it's a pretty strong statement about how women's worths are not determined by their sexual choices."
Darth Maul as Supreme Leader Snoke? It's More Likely Than You Think
Going into all the madness surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we've got quite a few mysteries to figure out. Not only are we trying to unpack the meaning of "the last Jedi" and uncover the identity of Rey's parents, but we've also got one big question to answer on the dark side: who the hell is Supreme Leader Snoke? We came up with a few theories of our own, but we couldn't help but notice the kind of fodder elsewhere on the internet. That's when we happened upon one truly crazy theory: that Snoke is actually a villain we've seen before - Darth Maul. Let's go over how it could prove true.
1. Darth Maul Is Not Dead
We all remember how Obi Wan Kenobi brutally cuts Darth Maul in half in The Phantom Menace and lets him fall to his death. It seems pretty definitive. But, well, Darth Maul goes on to appear in the TV shows The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. While many reject these TV series as official parts of the Star Wars canon, it's worth noting that Disney has begun producing them. This would mean that all creative decisions made pertaining to the TV shows are likely made with the events of the films in mind. Plus, if Darth Vader can lose half his body from lava burns and survive, there's a chance Darth Maul could too. Even his official bio on StarWars.com corroborates the fact that he did not die.
2. It Would Explain One of Snoke's Most Telling Comments
The whole reason we're attempting to trace Snoke back to a Star Wars character we've already met is because he says one very crucial thing in The Force Awakens. Snoke reveals that he witnessed the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire. Considering how the rise of the Empire happens in the first trilogy (Episode I to Episode III) and the fall happens at the end of the second trilogy (Episode IV to Episode VI), we're potentially looking for a character who's been around since the very beginning. If you accept the TV shows as canon and believe Darth Maul survived, he certainly fits in here. As for the second trilogy, just because we didn't see him doesn't mean he wasn't around. He could have been in hiding.
3. His Powerful Origins
Darth Maul was an apprentice of the evil Darth Sidious, one of the most terrifying and powerful Sith Lords on the dark side. It's also clear that he possessed great agility and combat skills. Perhaps his hatred for Obi Wan fueled him and made him hungry for more power and even revenge. With such powerful desires lighting his way, it would make sense that he would strive to rise in the ranks of the dark side. This might explain how he eventually came to be the leader of the sinister First Order.
4. They Sound the Same
If you go back and listen to the handful of lines uttered by Darth Maul and compare them to Snoke's voice in The Force Awakens, it's pretty clear that they sound quite similar. It's not just the gravelly quality of their respective voices, either. They share the same accent, tone, and basic inflection. That's pretty hard to write off.
5. But What About the Horns and the Face Tattoos?
Obviously, the biggest hole in this theory is Darth Maul's unmistakable face tattoos and skull horns. But, I mean, come on! Look at Snoke. It's clear he's been pretty badly deformed by some kind of accident. It stands to reason that Darth Maul could have endured some extensive, brutal body trauma that left his face and head permanently changed. It's also worth noting that Darth Maul's mother, Talzin, is a powerful Force witch. It's possible she found a way to transfer her son's consciousness into a vessel that could better handle him. With Darth Maul inhabiting a different body, his tattoos and horns would obviously be gone.
We're not going to take credit for this pretty out-there theory, though. If you want to get down to the nitty-gritty, it's all outlined in the video below.
Maybe it's time to put those tinfoil hats back in the closet for now.

Your Toddler Is Going to Love This Easter Painting Activity
The following post was originally featured on San Diego Songbird and written by blogger Julia Wheeler, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Moms.
I'm really into buying wood blanks for my toddler to paint for each holiday. It's a super easy craft that takes up about an hour of our day and he loves slapping the paint around freely. When the weather is nice, it's a super fun activity for outdoors but can be just as easy to do in the house with an old tablecloth on the kitchen table.

2 Dads Invent an Amazing Device After a Toddler Dies in a Hot Car
After yet another child horribly passed away after being forgotten in a hot car, two dads decided to take action. Fadi Shamma and Jim Friedman are both dads who are also neighbors and friends living in Tampa, FL. After hearing about the 2-year-old boy's death, the pair (one with a medical background and the other an engineer) teamed up to create a solution to this ongoing problem.
They invented "Sense a Life," a device aimed at making sure children are never left in hot cars. The device has two parts, one a small pad to put under your child and the second a Bluetooth sensor that is placed under the driver's seat. When a user opens the car door, a loud automated voice from the device sets off an alarm that reminds you to get your child from the back seat. If for some reason you still don't get your child, it will send an alert to your phone reminding you to get them. If you still don't remove your child from the seat, you will receive a second phone notification shortly after and the device will alert an emergency contact.
The pair are working with national organization KidsAndCars.org to try to pass a federal law that would require a device like this to be built into cars. You can buy a Sense a Life device ($100) on the company's website, where it is currently available for preorder.
The 9 Most Memorable Oscar Blunders of All Time
The Academy Awards is usually Hollywood's most dignified celebration, but everyone makes mistakes sometimes. This year, the wrong film was awarded best picture - momentarily, at least. La La Land's filmmakers got halfway through their acceptance speech when it was revealed that Moonlight was the real winner. It was an embarrassing moment for literally every person involved, and it's by far the biggest "oops" moment that has ever happened at the Oscars . . . but it's not the only one. Take a look to see the most memorable slip-ups that have ever happened at the big show!
How to Eat If You're Trying to Lose Weight, According to a Dietitian
Like most people trying to lose weight, I listened to the experts. Instead of eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I started scheduling meals and snacks so I was eating five or six times a day. This worked out to noshing on something every couple hours - 7 a.m. breakfast, 9 a.m. snack, 12 p.m. lunch, 3 p.m. snack, 5:30 p.m. dinner, and sometimes a late-night snack. The purpose was to ensure my hunger was satiated to prevent feeling so famished at each meal that I'd overeat. But then I realized I was eating all day long and never feeling hungry. I was also not losing weight. I was watching the clock instead of listening to my body. So which is better?
When I asked certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD of Whole Health Nutrition to answer that question, she said, "It's better to eat when you are hungry. This is the concept of mindful eating." Every time you go to put something in your mouth, ask yourself if you are hungry.
She also adds that it's important to know what hunger is, since feeling hungry is important for weight loss. "Some people have stomach growling, some have salivation and increased food thought." Being aware of the hunger scale will help you decide when it's time to eat. You want to eat when you're at about a three on the hunger scale, feeling hungry with a growling belly. And the important thing here is to eat enough until you're at about a six on the hunger scale, where you feel satisfied but not stuffed or tired from eating too much.
Eating when you're hungry and eating just enough to feel satiated is the key. So instead of watching the clock and eating exactly at certain times of the day, eat when your body tells you it's ready to eat. That might mean eating three times a day, and that might mean eating six times a day.
Leslie does say that, "I think if you are a person who is a meal skipper or someone who doesn't really feel that hungry, setting times is a good idea." Some people forget to eat because they're so busy, or their work schedule only allows them to take breaks at certain times, so for these instances, it's important to schedule snacks and meals. But overall, if you're schedule allows for it, "go for the hunger/mindful eating approach."
Becky G Has Been a Fan of Selena Quintanilla Since She Was Little - and This Video Proves It
Becky G has been showing her love for Selena Quintanilla since she was a little girl. The "Todo Cambio" singer has always spoken very candidly about her affinity for the late Tejana singer. "Selena is one of my biggest inspirations. Beyond just her music, her way of being with her family and fans was so special and so relatable. Every show, interview, and song had something special. Something Selena. Thankful for the path she had created for young women like myself to be ourselves," she captioned a photo she posted on Instagram in 2015.
In the video, Becky looks like a mini Selena, wearing her iconic purple-sequin jumpsuit, long black hair, and bangs. Even though she is only lip-syncing to the song, Becky knows how to work the crowd and looks right at home on that stage. Press play above and get ready to feel nostalgic.

Milo Ventimiglia Says There Will Be a Lot of Resolution in the This Is Us Finale
This Is Us is quickly approaching its final two episodes, and we can already tell it's going to be "crushingly painful." Even though we'll miss crying our eyes out every Tuesday night, we are anxious to learn more about the Pearson family, more specifically how its patriarch, Jack, dies. While we certainly have a few theories of our own, we decided to go to the source. POPSUGAR recently had the chance to talk with the show's star Milo Ventimiglia during the NBC Midseason Press Day, and he gave us a little bit of insight about the much-anticipated finale.
While he did reveal that we're going to "learn pretty quickly what's going on," he insisted that fans be patient and wait for the entire story to unfold. "There's a lot of resolution," he said about whether the finale will end in a cliffhanger. "There's also a lot of questions that will beg answers at the end of the season." Even though he knows Jack will die eventually, he admitted that it doesn't really affect how he plays the character. "Jack is a positive man," he said. "He loves his wife, he loves his family, he tries to just do the best he can. Given that, hopefully it's not about Jack's death, so much as it is about his life."
2017 Will Be Extra Exciting For These Pregnant Stars
We're all hoping for good things in 2017, but some stars are expecting more than just success and happiness - they're also expecting babies. Beyoncé announced her pregnancy - with twins - in February, as did George and Amal Clooney, and they join a crop of other stars with buns in the oven. From first-time moms like Lauren Conrad and Amanda Seyfried to stars like Marion Cotillard and Ciara, who are on their second bundles of joy, it's going to be a pretty fun year.
Army Dad Makes It Home From Afghanistan Minutes Before His Daughter Is Born
Army Sergeant Zach Shryock and his wife knew that Zach would likely miss the birth of his first child due to a deployment in Afghanistan that was set to return him home to Atlanta a month after Brittany's due date. However, a few twists of fate had a quick domino effect in the weeks leading up to his daughter's birth that make for a very special birth story.
Zach received news that he'd be among a small group of soldiers to return home early, a month before Brittany was due. The couple made plans to do as many things together as possible before the baby arrived, including a "baby boot camp" class and decorating the nursery, but once baby Myra heard her dad was coming home, she decided that she was done with her time on the inside and wanted to be there to greet him.
This Little Girl Will Melt Your Heart When She Interrupts Her Dad's Army Welcome Home Ceremony
On his way home from Afghanistan, which included tons of stops and delays, Brittany's water broke and Zach's trip suddenly became a race against time to witness Myra's birth. From Charlotte, NC, where he heard the news, Zach booked the next flight to Atlanta while Brittany advanced to five centimeters dilated. By the time she reached 10 centimeters, Zach's plane hadn't even left the airport thanks to an hour-and-a-half delay due to a deer on the runway.
While Brittany's best friend personally handled Zach's transportation from the airport to the hospital, Brittany was resting, just minutes away from having to start pushing. "When I heard everyone clapping and yelling in the hallway, my eyes filled with tears," Brittany told Babble of the moment Zach arrived at the hospital. "I knew my husband had made it home. It seemed like a dream when I saw him walk through the door. After a hug and a welcome home kiss from him, I have never been more motivated in my life."
Thirty minutes later, Myra made her debut five weeks early at 5 pounds, 7 ounces, and Zach was able to witness the whole thing. "He made it from across the world to welcome his firstborn child into the world," Brittany said.

What 1 Dad Told His 5-Year-Old After Her First Encounter With the "Mean Girls"
The following was written for The Fatherly Forum, a community of parents and influencers with insights about work, family, and life.
My 5-year-old girl is in kindergarten and is already getting a glimpse of "mean girl" behavior. I'm shocked by this, not as much as the time I hit my crotch when opening my car door, but still, I'm surprised.
I thought "mean girls," like the movie, didn't exist until high school. I'm naive I suppose. And every generation seems to start things earlier than the previous one. I'll probably have to meet my daughter's boyfriend in second grade. He'll come over to the house, I'll kneel down to shake his hand, and I'll ask him over grilled cheese sandwiches what he plans to do with the rest of his life.
My daughter told me her friend looked over at her and said, "You're boring." It hurt her, but mostly she was pondering what it meant. Honestly, how can a 5-year-old be boring? It seems to be impossible considering the amount of playing, dancing, and screaming that goes on with kids that age.
While I never experienced mean girls, I was exposed to mean boys. One, in particular, comes to my mind. I'll call him Dick. He ambushed me one day in the locker room at middle school. He gave me an atomic wedgie.
For the uninitiated, an atomic wedgie differs from a regular wedgie in that the back of the underwear has to come up over your head. It's an improbable feat with cotton briefs and more often than not the elastic tears from the foundation. After Dick had left, I held the scraps of my waistband. My underwear slipped down inside my pants, which was an odd sensation, but no match for the pain brought on by fabric yanked violently up my butthole.
I reminded her of all the things that make her exciting.
I'm sure there's a whole host of psychological reasons why people are mean. It could be to get a reaction or to see what it feels like to hurt someone. In some cases, it's because someone else was mean to them and they are paying it forward. It's entirely possible Dick went home, and his older brother gave him an atomic wedgie, and his father gave his older brother an atomic wedgie, and his grandfather gave his father an atomic wedgie, and that's the way it was for generations. Bullying was in their bloodline.
I hobbled home sucking back the tears. My mother knew something was wrong. I told her about Dick flossing my insides with my underwear. My father came home, and my mom told him the story. Dad called me down from my room, disturbing the self-soothing rocking I was doing on the floor in the dark, and he put his hands on my shoulders. He looked me in the eyes, taking a moment.
"Tomorrow, I want you to walk up to Dick and punch him in the nose." he said, nodding his head and releasing me from his grip.
"David!" my mother exclaimed, "he can't punch the boy."
"Why not," my dad asked. "You want him to be bullied for the rest of his life."
"Well, he can't punch someone every time they harm him for the rest of his life either."
"The only way to stop a bully is to show him you're not scared." my dad huffed.
This plan sounded good to me except for the fact I'd have to hit somebody. Not one of my strengths. My mother had another idea.
"Next time he picks on you tell him to go suck an egg." she said, folding her arms in self-satisfaction.
I stared up at her, incredulous.
"Jesus, Gin, what the hell does that mean? Why don't you just tell him to paint a bullseye on his face."
"That's what we use to say to the meanies when I was a kid."
"I'm sure it worked wonders."
"Oh stop it, you poo."
In case you can't tell my mother has always used the discarded terms of a bygone era. She's prone to calling people stinker and uttering phrases like cattywampus and rigamarole on a regular basis.
"Look, Gabe, you do what you need to. But what you can't do is let him pick on you. You have to stand up to him, or he'll never stop." My dad said, placing his hand on my cheek.
"Maybe I could change schools?" I asked.
"You can't run away from your problems honey." My mom said.
I wasn't going to tell my daughter to punch that girl in the nose. There's no need to be extreme. It's not Lord of the Flies; it's kindergarten. Telling her to say "go suck an egg" seemed even more ridiculous now then when I was a kid.
I reminded her of all the things that make her exciting. I told her that other people's opinion of her, good or bad, doesn't matter. It's how you feel about yourself that counts. I read that in a self-help book somewhere, but that doesn't make any less true. My daughter will never know where I got that advice anyway. Unless she reads the same self-help book someday, but she'll think I said it first. Then she'll say "wow, my dad is brilliant." So I'll look like a guru in about 20 years. Even better would be is if she never reads the self-help book because she doesn't need it.
Honestly, how can a 5-year-old be boring?
My job as a dad, as I see it, beyond unconditional love and carrying her on my shoulders until she exceeds the weight limit, is to give her the tools to grow up confident so she can help herself. Then she'll be ready to navigate this minefield of mean girls who will potentially tell lies about her, tease her, or bully her.
The only other answer is to homeschool her, but I don't feel comfortable picking on my daughter. And prom would be sad. The truth is knowing how to deal with cruel people is a skill and necessary in the world. I just don't want her to get too much practice.
As far as my bullying story, I went to school the next day, and Dick found me in the locker room. He came towards me, and I backed up against the tiled wall. I slapped at his arms, yelling, as he came in for the wedgie. It wasn't pretty, but it was effective. He got annoyed with trying to grab me and waved his hand saying, "You're not worth it." I almost said back, "I'm worth a lot." No need to get cheesy I thought. Instead, I silently put on my book bag and walked out with my head up.
Dick didn't bother me again after that day.
Feud Season 2 Will Take Us Inside the Royal Family, but What Exactly Will We See?
At the end of February, FX announced a second season of Feud, Ryan Murphy's latest anthology TV series. While the first season went for the Hollywood jugular and highlighted Bette Davis and Joan Crawford's infamous decades-long hatred for one another, the second season is taking a surprising turn and highlighting the crumbling marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. In March, Ryan Murphy spoke to E! News and clarified his intentions for the season. "I was always very interested in that story of divorce and pain," Murphy explained. "I wanted to do a different kind of feud that's about broken hearts. And I think that's what that marriage was and that's what Charles and Diana is about."
Given the context of the quote, it seems like the struggles faced in season two will be much more internal than public. We decided to look back at Charles and Diana's relationship to figure out what moments may be highlighted over the course of the season.
1. The Wedding Nightmare
While the wedding was a public spectacle of its own, it wasn't until years later new information came to light in a biography. According to Vanity Fair, both Diana and Charles were not sure they could go through with the wedding. "I can't marry him, I can't do this, this is absolutely unbelievable," Diana said, while Charles was allegedly "desperate" and said, "I can't go through with it, I can't do it." This might mean we won't see much of the wedding at all, but rather we'll witness all the tension leading up to the big day.
2. The Affairs Behind Closed Doors
Here is another opportunity for Feud to capture what was going on privately, rather than what the world saw. The general public became well aware of Charles's affair with Camilla Parker Bowles in 1992 when a sexually explicit conversation was secretly recorded and published by the press. Will the series show Charles and Camilla in those conversations? Did Diana know? When did she find out? Were there more phone calls that we weren't privy to? Feud could give us a sense of how the couple handled everything on the inside.
3. Diana's Tell-All and the Horror Show at Home
After the monarchy publicly acknowledged the rift between Charles and Diana, both sides of the marriage gave two very different interviews. Charles cleared the air, so to speak, in 1994 with Jonathan Dimbleby, while Diana spoke with the BBC's Martin Bashir in a more candid tell-all chat. Here, we have a chance to examine everything that led up to these public moments. What went down between Queen Elizabeth II and Charles before this decision? How did he prepare himself for it? What happened that drove Diana to expose everything once and for all?
We have a long way to go until the 2018 premiere of Feud's royal season. With the British royal family shrouded so deeply in secrecy, though, it's clear there's plenty to explore and dig into to give us a compelling season.

After Months of Waiting, You Can Finally Shop Martha Hunt's Dusty-Rose Sneakers
Victoria's Secret models may rock lingerie and wings on the runway, but off duty, they've got no problem getting casual. More often than not, an Angel-approved outfit comes complete with a pair of sneakers. Last November, when we caught up with Martha Hunt at Body by Simone, we had to ask for her favorite picks.
While the blond beauty admitted her go-to workout trainers are a black Reebok option, she spilled a major secret when asked her about everyday kicks. "I'm about to launch one," she revealed. "But it's going to be a minute. You can look for mine in January."
Now months later, Martha launched her limited-edition sneaker with the brand Nights With. The dusty-rose colored kicks are $125 and we have a feeling they will sell out quick. Not to worry though, there will be more colors and styles coming in Spring '17.
Martha admitted the collaboration "fits in line" with her typically minimal fashion choices. "It was all my concept of what I wanted to do with my ideal sneaker," she told us. "It was something that I wanted to be able to wear."
And we're betting BFFs like Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid will want to get their hands on a pair too. "I think if you see your friends wearing it, that's a clear example of them liking the shoe," she said. Scroll through to see a few of Martha's fashionable friends who might take her up on that offer, thus solidifying its spot as the new It style.

Mom's Message About Her Baby's Death: "If I Had Given Him Just 1 Bottle, He'd Still Be Alive"
On what would have been Landon's fifth birthday, his mom, Jillian Johnson, managed to sideline her grief to speak out about the death of her baby boy.
Jillian has struggled with wanting to share what happened to Landon for a long time, but feared what others would say and how she would be judged. However, she is ready to put those feelings aside in the hopes that sharing her story will help prevent other families from experiencing the loss that hers has been suffering.
Before Landon's birth, Jillian and her husband thought that they were doing everything in their power to prepare themselves. "We took all of the classes. Bought and read all of the books. We were ready! Or so we thought . . . " she shared on the Fed Is Best Foundation's blog. "Every class and book was geared toward breastfeeding and how it's so important if you want a healthy child."
They even decided to deliver Landon at a "baby-friendly" hospital that was geared towards breastfeeding. After Landon was born via emergency C-section, he exclusively breastfed. Despite lactation consultants saying that "he had a great latch and was doing fine," one noted that Jillian might be having trouble producing milk.
After hospital staff evaluated Jillian's risk factors for difficulties with milk production, they had Landon continue to breastfeed, even though he would constantly cry unless he was on his mom's breast. Jillian felt like she was continuously breastfeeding and when she asked why her baby was always on her breast, she was told that it was because he was "cluster feeding."
"I recalled learning all about that in the classes I had taken, and being a first time mom, I trusted my doctors and nurses to help me through this – even more so since I was pretty heavily medicated from my emergency C-section and this was my first baby," she wrote. "But I was wrong. I've learned I have to be my child's number one advocate."
Landon nursed over nine hours during his first 24 hours of life, but after being alive just 53 hours, he had lost 9.72 percent of his birth weight. Landon was discharged at less than 3 days old and continued to frequently and exclusively breastfeed "with a mother whose milk had not come in."
"So we took him home . . . not knowing that after less than 12 hours home with us, he would have gone into cardiac arrest caused by dehydration," she wrote. "Did you know newborns aren't supposed to cry all the time? They're supposed to eat and sleep and dirty their diapers. I had no idea that he was inconsolable because he was starving – literally."
Mom's Complicated Relationship With Her Breasts: 1 Tried to Kill Her and 1 Keeps Her Baby Alive
After getting home, Landon fell asleep while cluster feeding and became unresponsive with no pulse, and turned blue. After 15 days on life support, the newborn passed away. "The best advice I was given by one of his NICU doctors while he was on life support is 'Sure breast is best, but follow with the bottle,'" she wrote. "This way you know your baby has eaten enough. If only I could go back in time."
Dr. Christie del Castillo-Hegyi, an emergency physician with a background in newborn brain injury research at Brown University, explained how Landon died as a result of dehydration, which was followed by cardiac arrest caused by brain injury:
Constant, unsatisfied nursing and inconsolable crying are two of the signs of newborn starvation that lead to brain-threatening complications. If a child is receiving a fraction of their caloric requirement through early exclusive breastfeeding, they can experience severe hunger and thirst, which is why they will cry inconsolably and breastfeed continuously when it is the only source of calories and fluid they are offered. If a mother's colostrum does not meet the child's caloric requirement, they will breastfeed for hours a day in an attempt to relieve their hunger. A child who is "cluster-feeding" may actually burn more calories breastfeeding than they receive in return, which can result in fasting conditions and accelerated weight loss.
Five years later, his mom is still dealing with endless guilt and questions what her life be now if she had just known to give him a bottle.
"And anger because how would I have known? I remember when Stella was born, and she was always quiet. I kept asking the nurses what was wrong with her. They said, 'Nothing. She's doing what she's supposed to,'" she wrote. "Sleeping. Eating. And it was then that I realized that it wasn't normal for a newborn to cry as much as Landon did. He was just crying out from his hunger. But I didn't know. I should've known. I still struggle daily feeling as though I failed him."
