Why It's Important to Make Time to Be Alone After Having a Baby
A very smart, very healthy friend of mine recently clued me in on a conversation she had with her husband before they adopted their now 2-and-a-half-year-old son. He was beyond ready to have a family; she wasn't totally convinced that she needed to have children to feel fulfilled in her life. "We were in negotiations," she told me. "I finally decided that yes, having a baby was something I wanted to do after he agreed to one thing: I still needed alone time after I became a mom, and I shouldn't have to feel guilty about that."
My friend absolutely loves her son and loves being a mom, but her alone time rule has stuck. She goes to movies by herself, takes bike rides to parks where she reads and relaxes solo, and travels for work and pleasure without her toddler. And, maybe because of their prebaby discussion, maybe because he's a unicorn father, her husband has never once made her feel bad about it. Instead, he encourages her to recharge her battery in the ways she needs to.
To her, the pact she made with her partner wasn't revolutionary, but to me - a mother of two who misses alone time more than anything else about my prekid life - it was a light-bulb moment for a couple of reasons. First, because it was so wonderful to hear a mom ask for something she needs, even if it makes more work for her spouse, totally unapologetically. Second, because it validated my own need for solo space.
I've always been a social being who also craves solitude. Even as a little kid, after running around with the neighborhood kids for hours, I'd retire to my room to read or play Barbies solo, begging off offers of more group playtime. As an adult, I've continued to crave alone time, loving nothing more than curling up with a good book for hours and ignoring my phone, my email, and my entire social world. But as a mom, that sh*t went out the window real fast, and honestly, I've resented that fact.

Of course, my motherhood situation was much different than my friend's. I had my first child when I was almost 32 years old, a mere nine months and three days after saying "I do" to my husband, who's two-and-a-half years younger than me and who at 28 years old became a first-time father long before any of his close friends. I was the more ready parent, and maybe because of that, I didn't feel like I could ask for anything beyond a baby.
In retrospect, I wish I would have had the conversation with him about what I pretty much knew was going to be my biggest parenting challenge: the loss of time to decompress by myself. I'm not talking about leaving my children to work, or the times he takes the kids to the gym childcare while he exercises, leaving me at home to clean the house and, if I'm lucky, shower before they come home. I mean real alone time, with no to-do list, no iPad-focused child in the next room, and no guilt. It's not something many moms get, but thanks to the reminder from my friend, I now know I deserve it.
Hallelujah! You'll Soon Be Able to Order McDonald's on Your Phone

Fast food is already convenient by nature, but McDonald's wants to make ordering even easier by allowing you to order and pay on your phone. McDonald's mobile ordering is being tested right now and will soon expand, eventually rolling out to all US locations later this year (if all goes according to plan). That means on those days when you seriously need a McMuffin or large fry ASAP, all you have to do is place the order on your phone, and as soon as you drive up to the store, it'll be handed to you.
You can choose to walk up to the counter, go through the drive-through, or receive your food through newly added curbside delivery, McDonald's has said. And if you're worried about your food being made too far in advance before you even leave your home, rest assured McDonald's has figured out a way to prevent that problem. "After customers place their order and pay in the app, McDonald's uses geo-fencing technology to track the customer's location, so their food is only prepared when they're physically near the store. This will save the food from remaining under heat lamps for too long," Tech Crunch reports.

Several McDonald's locations already have self-serve kiosks to make ordering even faster, and mobile ordering is taking the idea one step further. Right now, McDonald's is testing the tech-focused service, and it's available at 29 stores in Monterey and Salinas, CA, and will expand to 51 more locations in Spokane, WA, soon. By the end of 2017, mobile ordering should be available in all 14,000 US locations plus thousands in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and China. As if the news of McDonald's delivery service wasn't exciting enough, we're tempted to skip the delivery fees and take advantage of this digital-ordering option as often as possible.

If you love Damon and Elena's relationship on The Vampire Diaries, then you may want to sit down for this. While the series finale was satisfying in a lot of ways, there was one crucial moment that didn't make the cut. During an interview with TV Guide, the show's creator Kevin Williamson revealed that a scene in which Damon proposes to Elena had to be cut for time. Um, what??
"We actually had a moment, which we didn't have time for ― everything got cut. I think the first cut came in 18 minutes over," he explained. "And there was a moment in the show where he proposed and she responded after medical school. And the whole point of that moment was just to show that she became a doctor. And so we thought, 'Oh, we'll just put her in scrubs and we can cut that piece.'"
We definitely would have loved to see that moment, especially seeing that two barely had any lines together after she wakes up from her sleeping curse. Oh, well. Here's Why Ivanka Trump Is Discontinuing Her Fine Jewelry Collection
Since her father took office, Ivanka Trump's lifestyle brand has received some rather mixed responses. Although her eponymous perfume appears to be rather popular on Amazon, several retailers, from T.J.Maxx and Nordstrom to Marshalls and the Home Shopping Network, decided to stop selling the first daughter's clothing line within the past few months. The latest update in this flurry of mishmashed reviews? Her brand is discontinuing its Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry collection.
The soon-to-be-former jewelry line includes an array of shiny products that cost anywhere from $640 for a simple ring to a whopping $19,500 for a glitzy necklace. The president of the brand, Abigail Klem, confirmed news of the jewelry line's ending to The New York Times, noting that it is due to the company's "commitment to offering solution-oriented products at accessible price points." Now the brand will be switching gears to focus on more affordable jewelry pieces.
STOP! Read This Before Opening an Expensive Bottle of Red Wine
You just got a promotion, your best friend just got engaged, or your significant other came home with a beautiful steak begging to be paired with a luxurious red wine and you reach for that 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon you've been tenderly caring for in your wine fridge for the last 10 years, because today is the day you're ready to celebrate! But before you decant that red and "let it breathe" like you've heard time and time again - STOP! You might just kill your wine. While visiting Silver Oak in Alexander Valley, I learned a pretty stunning fact . . .
You should never aerate perfectly aged wines.
Really? We abruptly halted our tour guide and questioned him in depth. Yes, younger red wines are known for having higher tannic profiles like Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, etc. Wines that haven't had the time to naturally age can benefit greatly from being decanted for 30 minutes to an hour before drinking. The oxidation that occurs brings the wine's backbone flavors and aromas up to the surface. Nate Weis, the winemaker at Silver Oak also suggests vigorously shaking the decanter to provide "O2 saturation" and says that this wine can be enjoyed throughout the night and possibly even into the following night.
Older wine that has been aged to perfection should be ready to pour immediately.
But red wines that have been aged between eight to 10 years (or longer) have most likely already been properly oxidized with time. It makes sense when you stop to think about it. When you open that cherished bottle it's already supposed to be at its optimal flavor profile, so why give it the treatment of a young buck wine?
But what about decanting the sediments out? Over the years, various elements in the wine such as tannins and other chemicals begin to bind together, solidify, and turn into those little flecks of sediment that you sometimes find with older bottles. They can sometimes taste bitter and let's face it, no one wants little bits of anything floating in their glass of red.
If you're a planner, the best course of action is to remove your bottle from the wine fridge, aging rack, or back of your closet - where you've hidden the good stuff so your friend's don't accidentally drink it while watching Scandal - a few days before you're ready to open it and set it upright so the sediment can slowly float down and settle at the bottom of the bottle.
Non-planners, use a decanter, but set a timer.
It's great to not only visually see when the sediments have floated to the bottom, it's also a good way to check the color and vibrancy of the wine before serving it. But don't let it sit too long, 10 to 15 minutes at the most, or else all of those flavors you've worked so hard to age could die a very sad death.
If you happen to be so lucky as to have a very very old wine - we're talking 40 to 60 years - first, thank the incredibly smart person who decided to save his or her wine that long. Then get ready. Weis warns that you should be very careful about the O2 exposure. It's always up to you and your nose, but when the wines are that old, even if you decant it gently, the clock might already be ticking on its lifespan. Weis says can sometimes it can be measured in minutes, so make sure your glass is in hand when you pop that cork.
And for the love of Bacchus, uncorking a wine and letting it sit in the bottle does not decant, aerate, or "let the wine breathe" in any shape or form. It basically just makes you sound pretentious.
Now as any good wine drinker knows - a lot of this is very subjective to the exact bottle you're drinking. There aren't any super hard or fast rules when it comes to enjoying a glass, but by and large these are some good tips to know so you don't accidentally lose what makes your wine so special!

I spoke to a former employee who worked at Trader Joe's for a year, and he gave me the inside scoop on how the company is run, the little-known details of the return policy, and what the point of those somewhat-annoying bells is. Spoiler alert: there's no real dirt (I tried!), but what I got was interesting, behind-the-scenes intel that made me an even bigger fan of the store.
There's a reason the customer service is so good.
Trader Joe's strategy in providing a quality customer-service experience is simple: overstaff. "They totally overstaff so that you don't feel like your stocking duties or your register duties trump interacting with customers - they encourage you to be nice to customers." That's why you can almost always find someone in a Hawaiian t-shirt or crew-member uniform walking around and waiting to help you find anything.
The employees try all the new products so they know what to tell customers.
"Each Trader Joe's has a break room, and they have one person who's in charge of cooking new stuff that the store gets and making it available for the entire staff who comes through the store that day to try it. They want you to try all the products so you can have an opinion so that when you recommend stuff to people, it's not baseless."
The pay is REALLY good.
This guy started out at Trader Joe's making $12/hour, which was above the state's minimum wage. You not only start out making a good amount, but it gets even better quickly. For example, let's say the bag of spinach you bought is partially opened or looks bad; you ring two bells and an employee will come over and grab a new one for you. Three bells means a manager needs to come over."

"Literally all of the signage around the store is custom-made by two or three artists who hang out in the back and almost exclusively do that, and register work every once in a while." That's why every store has location-based art throughout the store - pretty cool, right?

Enraged Parents Warn Others of Tommee Tippee's "Slimy" Milk Machines
Parents are discovering "mold-like slime" in Tommee Tippee milk machines and are warning others online with stomach-turning photos of their findings. These parents haven't been shy about their concerns and have posted on the brand's Facebook page explaining that within the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep machine, they are finding the internal plastic tubing "black with grime."
The machine, which heats formula for bottles in under two minutes, is supposed to control the quality and temperature of the water being used. After reading stories from other disgusted parents, Julie Hughes shared online what happened she dismantled her own machine to check the tubing:
"After all the raised concern recently about the perfect prep machine, I decided to dismantle mine after my 8-month-old baby has been so poorly for weeks with a terrible sore cough. I am DISGUSTED in what I just discovered. I have changed the filter, etc. and cleaned as advised. I will be formally writing to you to discuss this matter further.
I trusted your company and machine. I trusted your machine to deliver what was promised ESPECIALLY considering the price you charge.
My baby boy has been up every night for weeks now with respiratory problems and we have visited the doctors several times over the last month. Upset, disappointed, and angry are just some of the emotions I feel after opening the machine up."
Tommee Tippee announced that they are investigating the complaints and looking for the exact cause. In a statement to the Huffington Post UK, a spokesperson for Tommee Tipee said:
"We were very concerned by these findings and started an immediate investigation.
To help us, we'd like any parents who have found similar build-up in their 'Perfect Preps' to contact us as soon as possible, so we can arrange to have their machine and filter returned to us via freepost for examination by an independent laboratory.
Firstly, the build-up we've seen so far we suspect is carbon residue and not mold. Carbon is a harmless, inert bi-product of the filtration process. Secondly, some parents have told us they've used ordinary water jug filters instead of the Tommee Tippee filters. Standard filters do not contain the ultra-filtration membrane needed to remove bacteria, plus are more likely to release carbon into the system.
Although we can't be certain until we've received back and examined more machines, it is possible these factors are linked to what people are seeing. However, the investigation will continue until we've found answers."

Obviously we'll see more Pearson family dynamics explored in season two, and star Justin Hartley intimated to us that the show might explore Randall and Rebecca's relationship more in season two. And we'll obviously also see the next stage in Jack and Rebecca's relationship since the finale showed a cataclysmic relationship fight.

There will be 18 episodes of season two, and the same number for season three. Creator Dan Fogelman said that the seasons will also be split into two arcs before and after the holidays, like season one.
William Will Still Be Part of the Show
In one of the saddest moments of a very sad season, William succumbs to his illness. That would seem like it would close the door on cast member Ron Cephas Jones being on the show anymore, but it didn't. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly right after William's death episode, Jones said that he would be back in season two in some way. He compared his resurfacing to the fact that Jack is dead in present day, but Milo Ventimiglia is a series regular. "I do know that he's going to carry over into season two in some way, just as well as Jack was in all of season one." He added that "there's a chunk of his life that we haven't explored" and that he's "very excited" about all the possibilities.
William's Death Will Inform Randall's Season 2 Storyline
After the episode about William's death aired, creator Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly that Randall's grief will be a big part of the next season. Fogelman said that Randall will ponder "'How do I honor his legacy? What do I do with what just happened in this year I've just spent with this man so that I just don't go back to the same old existence?' And he starts making a bunch of choices and decisions that will affect us going into season 2." By the end of the season, Randall has quit his job and decided he wants to adopt, so perhaps those are the ways he is honoring his biological father's legacy (please, please, please let us see Randall as a stay-at-home dad).

Want to transform your long chain-link necklace into a choker? No problem. Know your #OOTD would be perfect if only you had those high-waisted, vintage jeans? Fake them. Follow these styling hacks to temporarily alter your outfit and create the perfect selfie.
1. In a Bind
- To make a loose top appear fitted, gather the shirt's excess fabric behind your back and fasten it with a large binder clip. This trick prevents the material from awkwardly bulging and blousing in unflattering ways.
- Use the same binder clips to transform baggy boyfriend jeans into a high-waisted style. Pull the denim pants up to your true waist. Tightly secure the extra denim at your lower back and tush for a pair that looks like it fits you like a glove. Just be sure to angle the clips away from the camera or photoshop them out later.
2. Packing Tape Pick Me Up
- If FedEx can rely on clear packing tape to secure a fragile shipment as it travels around the world, then you can trust it to keep your boobs in place. When you want the girls to look perky and alive in a low cut jumpsuit follow these simple steps: lift, separate, tape, repeat.
- You'd never want to permanently shorten your extra long, wide-leg pants. When paired with superhigh heels they turn your 5'4" frame into a statuesque 5'9" and give you legs for days. If you want to pair the trousers with cool trainers for an Instagram shot, temporarily tailor them by folding the hemline under to the desired length and adding the adhesive on the inside to keep the cuff in place.
3. Mask It
- The shoes you ordered online are way too uncomfortable to actually wear but their beauty deserves its own hashtag. If you can't resist snapping a picture before you return them, line the bottoms with strips of masking tape before stepping into frame. The adhesive will protect the soles from dirt and scratches and also pull away gently when you remove it from the shoe.
4. Safety First
- One minute chokers are the hottest accessory and the next it's all about long necklaces. Optimize your jewelry inventory by altering lengths with safety pins. To make a navel-grazing statement pendant appear shorter, push a safety pin through one side of the chain link or fabric. Once the necklace is adjusted as desired, secure the other side and clasp the pin behind your neck.
- If an extension is what you're after, loop several safety pins together and clip them to your necklace ends. Hide the silver pins behind your neck or cover them with your hair before snapping the shot.
5. Flat Iron Fix
- If you're taking a close up picture of a monogramed shirt collar or cuff but don't have time to properly press or steam the entire top, don't. Quickly run a hair flat iron over the wrinkled sections for the illusion of a completely crisp top.
This Woman With Vitiligo Turns Her Body Into Art - and It's Stunning!
At age 12, Ashley Soto was diagnosed with vitiligo, an incurable condition in which patches of the skin lose their color pigment. During her adolescence, she was bullied because of her skin's discoloration, and it took a toll on her self-confidence.
"It made me want to start hiding away from people and left me covering my skin, as I didn't want people to make fun of me," she told the Daily Mail.
Now at 21 years old, Ashley is no longer hiding. Rather, she's using social media to spread a message of self-acceptance by sharing photos that proudly show off her vitiligo. Recently, her pictures have taken a more artistic spin, as she has started turning her skin condition into beautiful works of art using markers and paint. These Raw Postpartum Body Photos Celebrate a Mom's Incredible Strength
Mikaela Shannon believes in loving yourself, no matter who you are or what size your body is. The talented photographer brought her motto into her professional life when she decided to empower new moms by taking photos that celebrated their postbaby bodies.
For Mikaela, her "Love Your Postpartum" photo series isn't just about encouraging new moms to see the strength in their bodies but to show women who aren't moms yet just how incredible their bodies are - even after birth. "I hope to help moms embrace the changes that come with having children," Mikaela told POPSUGAR. "I also want to help heal moms of the many different issues that can come along with having a child. There are even a couple of moms coming whose babies are now guardian angels, and even though their babies aren't physically here, they are still postpartum mommas!"
The community's response to these photos has blown Mikaela away as moms continue to sign up for the sessions. Janet Katherine, a new mom who is participating in an upcoming shoot, shared her feelings on showcasing her postpartum body:
I chose to participate in this photo series because this right here is how I want to look back and remember my body. This is how I want my children to remember my body. Real, imperfect, strong, capable, and MINE to do what I want with, not for others to judge.

The Important Reason Cheerios Got Rid of the Bee Mascot
Honey Nut Cheerios have been a staple breakfast item of ours for as long as we can remember, and that's why when the BuzzBee mascot went missing from the box, we knew something was up. The buzzers at General Mills have removed the mascot from the box in an effort to raise awareness of the endangered pollinators and "bring back the bees" through a new campaign. In 2015, 42 percent of the bee colonies in the United States collapsed, and with more than 30 percent of all General Mills ingredients dependent on pollination, the company has decided to take action. The brand set up a website encouraging people to order wildflower seeds for bees to feast on at no cost and help reach its goal of planting 100 million seeds.
"As a General Mills cereal built around nutrition, helping pollinators get the key nutrition they need through fun, family-friendly activities like planting wildflowers is a natural fit," Susanne Prucha, director of marketing for Cheerios, said in a statement. "Our commitment to increasing the habitat for pollinators is one way we are continuously striving to be a company that not only makes products people love, but a company that pursues creative solutions to make our world a better place for all families."

Learn the Secret to the Big Mac Sauce - and Prepare to Put It on Everything
We've figured out how to make McDonald's french fries and classic Egg McMuffin, and now you can make the Big Mac in your very own kitchen. A 2012 video of McDonald's Executive Chef Dan Coudreaut breaking down the makings of the iconic sandwich has resurfaced and we're lovin' it. Chef Dan shows us how to hack the Big Mac right down to its famous sauce, using similar ingredients available at your local grocery store.
Starting with the sauce, combine mayo, sweet pickle relish, classic yellow mustard, white wine vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Lightly toast three buns and brown two 100 percent beef patties in a pan, seasoning with a little salt and pepper. To finally assemble the Big Mac, add a dollop of the sauce on the "heel" (bottom bun) and the "club" (middle bun. Add a pinch of onions and lettuce onto both pieces, a slice of cheese on one, and two hamburger pickles on the other. After putting a patty on top of each bun, stack the prepared club on top of the heel, and finally place the "crown" (top bun) to top it all off. And voilà, you've got yourself a homemade Big Mac!

How Jon Snow Is More Like Ned Than Any of the Stark Children
It's pretty much universally accepted at this point that Jon Snow isn't really Ned Stark's son on Game of Thrones, but the bastard apple doesn't always fall far from the tree (even if the apple is actually the nephew of the tree). Over the course of six seasons, we've watched Jon slowly evolve from family outcast to badass leader, and there's no denying how much Ned has inspired the man Jon has become, right down to his fashion sense. While we're waiting for more season seven details, take a look at the stark similarities. (Get it?)
They're both great (but reluctant) leaders.
In season one, Ned initially declines Robert Baratheon's request for Ned to be his Hand to the King. Though Ned is a loyal friend, he's never really desired being in a place of high power. However, his commitment to justice (in this case, investigating the Lannisters and Jon Arryn's death) and doing what's best for Westeros eventually sways him to head to King's Landing. Similarly, Jon has no aspirations of being Lord Commander when he first joins the Night's Watch, but ultimately accepts the position when it's decided by the group that he's the right choice. Jon tries to decline leadership again when Sansa reveals her plan to take back Winterfell; at this point, Jon has already been murdered for his role and has no interest in heading up an army and going into battle. However, like Ned, his commitment to doing the right thing, especially for his family, puts him in charge once again (though really Sansa is pulling a lot the strings here).
They refuse to compromise their morals
There's no denying that the Stark men are honorable, but unfortunately, like his father (and his brother Robb), Jon's rise to power ends in tragedy - and all three men fall due to an inherent difficulty in playing the darker side of the titular game of thrones. As Hand to the King, Ned is basically outplayed by everyone in King's Landing once Robert dies - proving to be no match for Littlefinger and the Lannisters, he ends up with his head on a spike, going to the grave refusing to truly acknowledge Joffrey as the true king (despite his final false confession). Jon gets into hot water with the Night's Watch when he won't turn his back on the wildlings (at the urging of many of his own men) - and pays the price when his men stage a mutiny. In his second life, Jon makes another grave mistake due to emotion - in the Battle of the Bastards, he's unable to stick to the plan to wait for the Bolton army to charge. Once he watches his brother Rickon die, he can't help but run straight for Ramsay (which also leads his army directly into a trap). Thankfully, things have worked out better for Jon than for Ned.
They're not afraid to do what they have to to make sure justice is served
It's clear from the very first episode of Game of Thrones that Jon is heeding his father's advice very carefully. In one of the first scenes of the show, Ned beheads a deserter of the Night's Watch as his sons look on, noting the importance that he do the beheading himself since he's delivering the sentence. Later, Jon follows suit in beheading Janos Slynt, after Slynt fails to acknowledge Jon as Lord Commander, and again in season six when Jon sees that the Night's Watch mutineers are hanged.
The physical similarities
Jon has always had the look of a Stark (moreso than Sansa, for example, who shares more similarities with her mother's side), but he's looked more like Ned than ever since his near death experience. For starters, there's the man bun Jon has been sporting, which harkens back to the Ned Stark mini-ponytail of season one. Then, there's the matter of armor: in season six, Jon has started wearing the Stark armor we previously saw on both Ned and Robb. Completing the look is the new fur cloak that Sansa makes and gifts to Jon after their reunion, which she modeled after the one their father used to wear. (Jon and Ned also share the uncanny ability to beautifully brood, but that's nothing new.)
A TV Documentary About the Life and Death of Heath Ledger Is in the Works
Heath Ledger was one of his generation's most beloved actors before the 28-year-old died in 2008 after an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. Although his life was cut tragically short, Spike has a documentary about his many accomplishments in the works. I Am: Heath Ledger will air sometime in May 2017 and will no doubt chronicle the Australian Brokeback Mountain actor's film career and his personal life. His ex-partner and mother of his child, Michelle Williams, has been extremely private about her relationship with Ledger since his death, so there's no way of knowing if she'll agree to appear in the I Am documentary series, which has focused on subjects like Chris Farley, JFK Jr., and Bruce Lee in the past.

Barack Obama Jets Off to Hawaii For a Round of Golf
Barack Obama is certainly making the most of his time off. After grabbing brunch with Bono and his wife, Michelle, in NYC last week, the former president jetted off to Hawaii, where he enjoyed a relaxing game of golf on Tuesday. Wearing a collared shirt, blue shorts, a cap, and sunglasses, the 55-year-old was all smiles as he teed up at the putting green with a few friends. But don't let his casual attire fool you - he's still making time to take care of business. Barack was also spotted dining at Hawaii's Buzz's Lanikai restaurant after reportedly meeting with some tech executives. Perhaps his return to politics might be sooner than we think!
