Yukon hospital makes waves with new treatment for frostbite

Josianne gauthier 2

Health care providers at Whitehorse General Hospital say they've seen excellent results so far, after coming up with a new way to treat severe frostbite. 'We’ve had a lot of calls from other hospitals in Canada, inquiring about our protocol.'

How Often Should I Strength Train?

Cardio definitely burns calories, but in order to lose weight more effectively, building muscle through strength training is a must. Confused about how often you need to hit those weights and bodyweight exercises?

If you're just looking to get strong, and tone up, fitness instructor John Kersbergen says, "what I've found to be the most realistic for people to actually consistently do is some form of strength training three to four times per week, for 30 to 40 minutes." That's enough. If losing weight is also your goal, focus on your diet and creating a calorie deficit, and you can also include cardio a few times a week to burn extra calories.

How you set up those sessions and what exercises you do depends on your goals. Bodyweight moves might be enough for some people, but others may need to add weights or resistance in order to get the results they're after. John says, "get as much work done in as short of amount of time each time with mostly total-body compound movements that recruit more muscles and burn more calories." We're talking squat variations like jumping squats, weighted squats, and dumbbell thrusters, deadlifts, burpees, push-ups, plank variations like up down planks and side planks with leg lifts, and lunge variations like split lunge jumps. John says static holds, like elbow plank hold, are also great to include because they increase the muscles' time under tension, which is another way to challenge them and make them stronger.

Here are some examples of strength training workouts:

As This Girl Spoke About Her Deployed Dad at School, He Showed Up Right Behind Her

Captain Nowak's Return Home

Quaker Valley's Osborne Elementary School welcomed home United States Army Captain Erik Nowak Tuesday during a surprise visit to school. Captain Nowak has been in Qatar since September 2016.
Captain Nowak surprised his daughter, second grade student Imogen, and her classmates at Osborne.
Welcome home and thank you for your service, Captain Nowak!

Posted by Quaker Valley School District on Tuesday, March 28, 2017

After being deployed for over six months, Army Captain Erik Nowak returned home and surprised his unsuspecting daughter in the sweetest way. At Osborne Elementary School in Pennsylvania, Erik's daughter, Imogen, was asked to briefly speak about how people can help soldiers overseas by sending care packages. What she didn't know, however, is that her dad was standing right behind her as she spoke.

As Erik approached Imogen, you can hear people reacting in the background - even though she still has no idea! Then, Erik leaned down to applaud her presentation and said, "I liked it a lot." At that moment, Imogen jumped into his arms and exclaimed, "Daddy!" Watch the sweet moment in its entirety, above.

Pierce Brosnan and Wife Keely Flaunt Their 23-Year Romance on the Red Carpet

Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith have been together for 23 years (and married for 16), but the longtime couple could still pass as a pair of love-struck teenagers. While walking the red carpet on Monday for Pierce's upcoming show, AMC's The Son, they only had eyes for each other. Photographers snapped away as they giggled, shared a few cheek kisses, and basically looked like they were in their own little world.

In a 2013 interview, Pierce credited meeting Keely after the loss of his first wife, Cassandra Harris, as a life-changing moment for him. "She is the most beautiful woman and someone who has been my North Star for many a day and a year now," he said. "We met when I was like Philip, adrift. I'd lost my wife and been a widower for three years. Keely is the backbone of our family, of my life, and I tell her that I love her every day. I tell her that she's beautiful and I couldn't have done it without her." Pierce, 63, and Keely, 53, met all the way back in 1994 and have two sons together, Dylan and Paris.

Veronica Mars May Be Returning - but Not in the Way You Think

Don't get overexcited (or prematurely angry), but Rob Thomas may be bringing Veronica Mars back. The creator did a Facebook Live session on Monday, and he mentioned that there probably won't be a sequel to the 2014 movie . . . but he's playing around with the idea of a six-episode miniseries. There's just one big problem: Kristen Bell is really busy. She's currently starring on The Good Place, and she has Frozen 2 and Bad Mom's Christmas to shoot and promote.

We'll keep you updated with any new information, but this is all we know at the moment!

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Montecillo in El Paso hosted special screenings of the Selena movie in honor of what would have been her 46th birthday on April 16. The theater had different props for fans to take photos with and even put out a life-size cutout of her Madame Tussauds wax figure. After seeing these photos, this is a party that you will definitely wish you had attended.

Kerry Washington Reveals the 1 Way Playing Olivia Pope Has Made Her Life Worse

Kerry Washington is one of Hollywood's most private celebrities, but that's never stopped her from speaking out on important issues. While chatting with Paola Mendoza, the artistic director of the Women's March, for Glamour's May cover story, the actress was forthright about how Americans need to "stay awake" amid a government hell-bent on banning Muslims and taking away a woman's right to choose (the ever-growing list of offenses goes on, and on, and on . . . ). The Scandal star and mother of two also touches on how playing Olivia Pope has irrevocably changed her life, and not entirely for the better.

Put Your Pitchforks Away, There WILL Be Music in the Mulan Remake

Disney is remaking their 1998 animated hit Mulan into a live-action film in the vein of Beauty and the Beast, and recently director Niki Caro caused quite a stir by saying that the upcoming version will not be a musical: "From what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children." Panic broke out across the planet, and Caro has now clarified her comments. "The live-action is based on that inspirational Chinese ballad and on the animated Disney classic," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're still exploring the role that music's going to play in it, but for sure there will be music."

That's what we thought, Disney.

Mom's Raw Letter to Her Baby on the Last Day of Maternity Leave

On her last day of maternity leave, a new mom wrote a powerful letter to her 9-week-old son. As the mom, who goes by "amacatokay" on Reddit, typed the emotional words, her baby was asleep on her chest, making cooing sounds and the thought of leaving him that much harder.

"I know you can hear my heart beating, just as you did for the nine months that I carried you," she shared on Reddit. "I cherish these moments more than I can ever explain with words . . . you are everything I ever dreamed of."

Like many other moms, this parent can't believe how quickly the last three months have passed and is dealing with a mix of emotions. "Tomorrow I have to return to work and leave a piece of my heart at home. Being away from you will be painful, and my heart aches at the idea of being away from you for so long," she wrote. "But I know we will be just fine."

When she leaves for her evening shift, this strong mama will find comfort in remembering the look that spreads across her little one's face when he curls up in his dad's arms. "The way you smile at him like he is the best person you've ever met. When you fall asleep on his chest as he reads you a book before bed," she wrote. "I know he will keep you safe, smiling, and fully snuggled in my absence."

She'll also find reassurance in the joy that fills "Grammy's" eyes whenever she gazes at her grandson. "The way she would do anything to keep you from harm. The little chats the two of you share, and the smiles she can always steal from you with a few silly sounds," she wrote. "She will hold you and rock you to sleep when I cannot."

Lastly, she will find resolve in knowing that she is teaching her son about strength. "Women are strong. I made you from scratch, my darling boy, my hours away from you will not be wasted," she wrote. "And I'll never take for granted the many blessings I have waiting at home for me when the night is through."

Before she leaves, there's one thing that she wants her baby to know:

Remember that whenever I go, my heart will ache for you my sweet baby boy. But when the sun rises the next day . . . you'll open your eyes and I'll be there. Always. I love you.

New Campaign Urges Women to "Mom Up" to Close the Working Mom Wage Gap

Moms are strong as hell; between carrying, birthing, and caring for their babies, it seems like there's nothing a mother can't do - except earn as much money as their male counterparts once they go back to work. A new campaign from The Mom Project - a digital platform that creates flexible work opportunities to allow women to remain engaged in both their careers and families - is seeking to end the working mom wage gap by shedding light on just how large that gap actually is.

In a video for the #MomUpAmerica campaign, a group of badass working moms address the issues they have faced since returning back to work, tying them in with their achievements in motherhood. "If I can push a nine pound baby out of my lady parts, I can push the envelope at work," one mom says. Another adds: "I lost six weeks of sleep the year my daughter was born. I'm pretty sure I can burn the midnight oil."

However, one mom's candid comment seems to be the driver for the entire video. "I change about 4,000 diapers a year," she says. "But there is some crap I won't take." The crap she's referring to, of course, is the fact that working mothers earn nearly a third less and as low as 46 cents for every dollar than their male counterparts at work.

Allison Robinson, founder of The Mom Project and the lead on this campaign, explained to POPSUGAR Moms why it's so vital we urge our elected representatives to prioritize policies that benefit working families. "The campaign is rooted in the insight that most female professionals start their careers at near wage parity with men, but then struggle to keep pace with men on this measure as they begin to juggle work and family life," she said. "While our national gender pay gap improves year over year, the 29 percent wage penalty mothers face shows little sign of improving."

Women are just as qualified for their jobs after children as they were before starting a family, so the real question is: why are they valued even less once they share their professional titles with the added title of "Mom"?

"Keeping mothers in the workforce and earning fair pay is key to future economic stability for our country," Robinson said. "At The Mom Project, we have taken the time to speak to thousands of mothers who have shared with us what they need to remain in the workforce and achieve pay equity - notably flexible work, paid leave, and affordable child care."

Robinson hopes that the #MomUpAmerica campaign will drive more public awareness to this lack of equality and that anyone who sees this incredible video will take the time to reach out to their elected officials, which they can do right on the campaign's website.

As the video states, "The (lack of) buck stops here."

Ellen DeGeneres Uses a Clown to Scare Eric Stonestreet 1 Week After That It Trailer

Eric Stonestreet just can't catch a break when it comes to stopping by The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The Modern Family actor, who has been scared so many times by the host that she even made a montage of all the best moments, decided to trust Ellen one more time and went for an interview on Tuesday. While his time on stage was safe and calm, Ellen managed to scare him while he was getting ready backstage before the show. After Eric walked into his dressing room, a clown popped out from a coffee table, causing him to clench his fist and say, "F*cker!" Ellen then opened the door to let out a mischievous laugh. While clowns are scary any day of the week, the fact that this happened just one week after that terrifying trailer for It was released just makes it so much worse.

Get an Awe-Inspiring Watercolor Tattoo Without the Commitment

Watercolor tattoos are beautiful, right? But if you don't want a commitment, you can re-create the look by using food coloring and any waterproof liquid eyeliner you have handy.

Practice a little by tracing geometric shapes (or whatever design you like) on a piece of paper. Then, using different brushes, pat on the food coloring. It should wash off in the shower using soap, water, and a little exfoliation. Also, if you're allergic to food coloring, maybe sit this one out? And always test a small patch on a hidden part of your body before trying out trends to see how your skin reacts!

Let us know in the comments if you'd give this a go.

Mom and Dads Have Tantrums Too Because All Parents Eventually Lose Their Sh*t

According to January Harshe, there comes a time in parenting that every mom and dad relate to: when you simply lose it and fall apart. If you haven't experienced this yet, January assures you to just wait, because it's coming.

"You're exhausted, pulled in too many directions, and pushed too far," January shared on Facebook. "It usually builds up with lack of sleep, always being needed, life stressors, and trying to force things." However, the downside to losing your sh*t as a parent is that it makes everyone else around you sad.

"Like mom and dad guilt isn't bad enough though, a daddy or mommy temper tantrum is great at adding extra. But once the dust settles, you have a good yell, or cry, or both, and good things can actually come from it. Shedding all that frustration, hurt, anger, etc. can help you get to the core of the issue. It gives you clarity to see things from a different perspective and to build the pieces back up to be better than before."

When this happens, January wants parents to know that it's OK to apologize, be forgiven, and most importantly, forgive themselves because they need that time to freak out, too. "I'm not telling you to melt down for the sake of melting down, I'm just saying that it happens and it's not the end of the world, you're still a good parent and human, and there's always a silver lining," she wrote. "Take a deep breath, try to take some time to yourself to quietly process (when you can), learn from it, and try something different!"

January understands that parenthood is the ultimate survival mode filled with days of never-ending problem solving and multitasking. But learning to let go, leaving some wiggle room for change, and being willing to say yes more often can help ease the struggle. "Dads and moms, you are allowed temper tantrums, too, and your family will love you unconditionally through them just like you love and support them unconditionally through theirs," she wrote. "That's what family does."

Jimmy Fallon and Shaquille O'Neal's Lip Sync Battle Might Be the Most Epic One Yet

To celebrate his special week of shows out of Universal Orlando Resort, Jimmy Fallon decided to bring out the big guns for his latest Lip Sync Battle. Shaquille O'Neal stepped up to the challenge, and the pair's face-off might be the most epic competition yet (only Channing Tatum and Beyoncé have them beat, honestly). Jimmy kicked things off with "Jump Around," but when Shaq started performing Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative," none other than Pitbull appeared. "That's not fair, that's not fair," the late-night host joked. "I got to up my game." Upping his game apparently meant singing John Legend and Ariana Grande's cover of "Beauty and the Beast" (complete with wardrobe changes), before he and Shaq both joined in on a duet of Elton John's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." We told you it was epic!

Britney Spears Gets Backstreet Boys’s Howie Dorough on All Fours During Her Vegas Show

Britney Spears might have dated a member of *NSYNC, but on Sunday she got up close and personal with one of the Backstreet Boys. During her Las Vegas Piece of Me concert, the 35-year-old superstar invited Howie Dorough on stage for a provocative performance of "Freakshow," and things got steamy. Howie, fresh off of his performance at the ACM Awards, happily crawled around on all fours while Britney whipped him. "Thank you so much for coming out here and dancing with us," Britney said before signing a t-shirt for him. "Thank you. Bye, baby. Everyone give it up for Howie!"

The Backstreet Boys are currently headlining their own Vegas residency, which makes it easy for them to pop by Britney's show. In February, A.J. McLean hung out with her backstage and had nothing but good things to say about her performance. "Her body's back! She looks fantastic! Britney's back, man," he said. "She's doing fantastic, dude. She was on her A game. She looked good, she sounded good, [and] she was killing it dancing."

Steph Curry Sings Disney Songs During His Carpool Karaoke Session

Just in case you had any doubt that Steph Curry is good at every single thing on Earth, his appearance on The Late Late Show on Monday should put your mind at ease. While host James Corden usually saves his Carpool Karaoke sessions for the music industry's biggest names (he says he made Adele audition for weeks), the Golden State Warriors player got to take his turn in the passenger seat because, yep, he can also sing. After James attempted to give Steph some life lessons while playing mini golf, the two hit the road to belt out some Disney songs. Steph, who is father to daughters Riley and Ryan with wife Ayesha, impressively sang along to Moana's "How Far I'll Go" and Frozen's "Love Is an Open Door." Long story short, he's a legend on and off the court.

The 5 Things I Do Every Morning to Stay Healthy

In those first years out of college, I struggled with the transition into "real adulthood." Adulting is hard! But as I started to make health and self-care more of a priority, I realized that I was lacking a solid morning routine. Fast-forward to today, and the routine I've established has helped set the tone for a healthy day, every day. Aside from the universal tip of "eat breakfast," here are the top five things that have helped me rise and shine; try these for a morning of wellness!

Oil Pull

Before you start saying "oil pulling is so 2014," hear me out. I grind my teeth at night, and I know I'm not alone in this. In addition to the possible oral health benefits, oil pulling exercises a stiff jaw to alleviate pain, forces you to get up 20 minutes earlier, and acts as a chemical-free mouthwash.

Stretch

While I oil pull, I stretch. I take this time to relax, meditate a bit, and warm up my body for the day. If I have time or get up early enough, I go to yoga or do a few Sun Salutations in my room. I know I'll be in a desk chair all day, so I try to carve out some time to always get a good stretch session in.

Drink Lemon Water

A room-temperature glass of lemon water has tons of health benefits: alongside improved hydration, you'll get a vitamin C boost for glowing skin, a metabolism boost, and a mood boost.

Care For Your Skin

I don't have an extreme 11-step Korean skin care routine, but I do have a pretty solid lineup for my skin. I cleanse my skin with Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel and my Clarisonic, then tone, apply serum, and moisturize. Twice a week, I use a peel, and three times a week, I use a retexturizing scrub. And you know what? I never knew my skin could be this good! The byproduct of this is that I now look forward to waking up (don't judge me) to go through my skin care routine.

Take Vitamins

I take B12 for energy, omega-3 for mood and muscle health, and vitamin E for hair, skin, and nails. If I'm drinking my vitamins in a shake, I use Vega One powder mixed with some coconut milk. At the risk of sounding like your mom, take your vitamins!

These 12 Cheesy Breads Are What Happens When Your 2 Favorite Things Come Together

9 Signs Your Kid Has Major Entitlement Issues

Uh-oh, has your generosity given way to a child who takes everything a little too much for granted? Our friends at YourTango share their expertise on entitled tots.

Take note, parents.

The scene: A child's birthday party.

Most of us have watched as the youngster - your child, or a friend or relative's child - tears into her gifts. She sees what is in one package and quickly moves on to the next. A parent stands by reminding her to say "thank you," often fruitlessly. Feeling somewhat helpless, the parent herself comments on how special the gift is, just what her son or daughter wanted.

The birthday party, particularly the "over the top" extravaganza, is only one way parents indulge their children and cultivate their sense of entitlement. We delight in seeing our children's faces light up when they receive exactly what they want, when we drop whatever we are doing to drive to someplace they have to be "right now!", or when we agree to finish their school project so they can get a good night's sleep.

Yet, when children receive everything they want, we feed into their sense of entitlement - and feelings of gratitude fall by the wayside.

It's what Amy McCready, founder of PositiveParenting Solutions, believes is a "Me, Me, Me"epidemic brought on by parents doing everything they can to insure their children's happiness.

"The entitlement epidemic usually begins with over-parenting - over-indulging, over-protecting, over-pampering, over-praising, and jumping through hoops to meets kids endless demands," she says. "Today's generation of parents are overly invested in their child's happiness, comfort and success.

"Overly involved parents helicopter their kids' every move and mow down the potential obstacles in their path," McCready adds. "In our attempt to shelter our kids from adversity, we rob them of the opportunity to make decisions, learn from their mistakes, and develop the resilience needed to thrive through the ups and downs of life. This is all done in the name of love - but too much of a good thing can result in kids who always expect to get what they want when they want it."

Does your child have an entitlement issue? In her book, The Me, Me, Me Epidemic: A Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Capable, Grateful Kids in an Over-Entitled World, McCready details signs that help indicate the extent of an offspring's "me, me, me" problem.

Here are 9 signs your child has entitlement issues:

1. The expect bribes or rewards for good behavior.

2. They rarely lift a finger to help.

3. They are more concerned about themselves than others.

4. They pass blame when things go wrong.

5. They can't handle disappointment.

6. They need a treat to get through the store.

7. They expect to be rescued from their mistakes.

8. They feel like the rules don't apply.

9. They constantly want more... and more.

Whatever the depth of your child's sense of entitlement, it can be lessened.

Good places to start: Restrain your overprotective instincts and stop doing things for your children that they can do themselves. For instance, if you are worried about your child, preteen, or teen riding in the car with a new driver, say no and then stand firm. Sure, your child will be disappointed, but don't change your position. Children tend to recover fairly quickly from most disappointments.

If your child wants a smartphone, McCready advises agreeing to pay for a basic phone and explaining that he or she will have to earn the money for a "fancier" phone and pay the data charges.

Michelle Obama Just Got Officially Sworn In - by J.Crew

Michelle Obama left the White House, and so many of us felt unprepared. Especially the fashion crowd - American designers who have gained recognition and respect thanks to their relationship with her. This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Scrambled Eggs

One of the most basic recipes everyone learns is scrambled eggs, but the truth is perfectly scrambled eggs are a lot trickier than they seem. Much like the classic omelet, scrambling eggs is one cooking method on which many chefs differ. To whisk in a bowl or in the pan? To add dairy or to not? Minor tweaks can make huge differences in something so basic, and we guarantee you'll want to change up your scrambled egg routine with tips from these experts - they know a thing or two about recipe developing. Here's how some of our favorite chefs scramble their eggs (we're not kidding when we say Gordon Ramsay's method is a game changer).

Alton Brown: Whisk With Whole Milk

Simple yet effective is the name of the game in Alton Brown's scrambled egg recipe. Adding whole milk isn't his only tip, though. "Odds are you're going to be serving these on a plate. If so, I strongly suggest you park an ovensafe one in a low oven or in hot water while you're cooking. Cold plates suck the heat right out of food," his recipe description reads.

Anthony Bourdain: Skip the Dairy

Anthony Bourdain doesn't condone adding milk or cream to scrambled eggs - or anything, for that matter. "I just don't feel that milk or cream adds anything. I believe that a scrambled egg is principally about the egg," the Appetites author says in a video about the best way to cook scrambled eggs. Anthony's other pro tip is to be careful not to overbeat the eggs; you want some white parts remaining. He cooks them in a heated pan with warm, foaming butter and carefully pushes them around in a figure-eight pattern to create soft folds.

Giada De Laurentiis: Frittata Cupcakes

Giada's preferred method of scrambling eggs involves a mini muffin tin - she likes to make frittata cupcakes. She told POPSUGAR in an interview, "I love making my little cupcakes - frittata cupcakes. I just stick whatever's left in the fridge. Whatever it is that was from the night before, whether it's leftover pasta, leftover meat, leftover vegetables . . . Another favorite is lox, scrambled eggs, and peas - for a little color. For a Sunday morning, it's one of my favorite go-to breakfasts."

Gordon Ramsay: Low and Slow (With a Secret Ingredient)

Gordon Ramsay's scrambled eggs recipe is one everyone must try at least once. The finished product looks more like custard, and thanks to his cooking method and a secret ingredient, they're melt-in-your-mouth good.

Paula Deen: With Water and Vidalia Onions

"We can't operate without Vidalia onions around here," Paula Deen said of her scrambled eggs in an interview with POPSUGAR. In addition to caramelized onions, Paula adds a splash of water to her eggs. "Water doesn't make it as tough as milk," she says. The real kicker, though, is to scramble the eggs in both butter and bacon fat to get the most flavor.

Chrissy Teigen: "Cheesy" Eggs, Hold the Cheese

Chrissy Teigen swears by her method of creating "cheesy" eggs without the cheese, thanks to her secret ingredient: heavy cream. Her tip for getting them as creamy as possible with no browned spots? "Don't stop gently stirring and scraping (edges and all) for more than a few seconds!"

The Pioneer Woman: Smoked Salmon and Chives

Like most Pioneer Woman recipes, this one sounds delightful. Calling them the "best scrambled eggs ever", Ree Drummond suggests sprinkling in chopped smoked salmon after the eggs are cooked and then garnishing with chopped fresh chives.

Mario Batali: Topped With Shaved Truffle

Leave it to Mario Batali to bring some serious culinary chops to such a basic recipe. To make scrambled eggs special, Mario suggests adding mascarpone or parmesan cheese, but to make them "spectacular," garnish with shaved truffle.

Katie Lee: Back to Basics

Food Network host Katie Lee has a strictly back-to-basics approach to scrambled eggs. She melts butter in a skillet and cooks the eggs low and slow. "It is important to keep the heat low when cooking eggs so as not to burn them," Katie told POPSUGAR in an interview.

Kendall Jenner's Invisible Jeans Will Make You Rethink Your Basic Denim

Kendall Jenner's street style never disappoints. She seamlessly manages to mesh edgy and chic styles all while looking unbelievably comfortable, and her latest ensemble is no different. Kendall was spotted out in Los Angeles, wearing what we're calling the hot new denim trend for warmer months. Or is it?

The supermodel stepped out wearing short jean shorts embellished with "Spice Wear" and a tiny British flag, but where the hemline stopped, the stitching continued down the side of her leg, eventually wrapping around her ankles. These could be the coolest new denim trend or the most destroyed ripped jeans in denim history. We're going with both.

She paired the shorts with an oversize red and white striped button-down shirt with subtle cutouts under the arms, performing a slouchy side tuck on one side. The Kardashian-Jenner sisters are no strangers to daring denim trends and Kendall's might be the trendiest yet. Keep reading to see her unique style and let us know if you'd be into trying the look.

Moms Can't "Have It All," and Maybe We'll Be Happier When We Accept It

Recently, I've been that mom trying to "have it all." What exactly does that mean? Well, to me, it has meant I've kept up the full-time mom duties I've had since leaving a traditional job three years ago, while tripling my professional workload. What I've learned in the three months since I started this little woman-power experiment? Having it all is an impossible b*tch. Something always has to give, and it might just be your sanity.

Perhaps my endeavor was misguided from the start. My kids are 3 and 6, meaning one of them is home with me all day long and the other, while in school from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is far from independent. So my mom duties are time-consuming and, while not as overwhelming as they were when I had a newborn and a toddler, still exhausting (thanks, kids for the half dozen wake-ups between midnight and 6 a.m. last night!).

But here's the thing: I love being a stay-at-home mom, but I also love working. I chose a career that I have always been passionate about, and while I'm lucky that this career includes a lot of flexibility - allowing me to take a major step back to be with my kids while still keeping one foot in the game as a freelancer - I crave more of the mental stimulation, creative expression, and adult interaction that comes with work.

So when I was asked to take on a short-term project that would triple the amount of hours I usually work each week (we're talking about going from paltry to part-time), I jumped at the chance to see how it could work. Surely I could find the time to "do it all," taking care of my kids and my house, running errands, playing chauffeur, and regaining some of that professional life that I so missed.

But because my new gig is temporary - and I didn't want my time with my kids to suffer because of it - I decided to try it without hiring additional childcare help. Isn't that what "having it all" really means? That you get to be a superengaged mom and a superproductive employee? Surely, I could manage what countless women before me have done. But I quickly realized that my new situation, truly doing it all and "having it all," is a crazy-making myth, one destined to make women feel like they're never doing enough, one destined to push us to the limits of what any normal human can take.

It's really simple math. Say you have 16 waking hours a day. My kids could easily take up all 16 with snack requests, but somehow I manage to throw in a load or two of laundry, run to the grocery store, head to the gym, make three meals a day, clean up after those meals, volunteer at my daughter's school, talk to a mom and maybe a close friend on the phone, help my daughter with homework, give my kids baths and read them books before bed, and watch 30 minutes of a favorite show before I fall asleep.

And now, somewhere in there, I'm trying to fit in a lot more work. Any mom can probably guess what I'm sacrificing to make time for that work (hint: I'm not cutting anything that affects my kids' happiness, but goodbye Housewives.)

Having it all means I no longer have any downtime, so I'm always at my wits' end. I'm always praying that my well-crafted schedule holds. When my son doesn't nap, I frantically try to work in the 45 minutes between dinner and bedtime, which as every mom knows is about the worst time to ask your kids to cooperate with your request for quiet time. When school's out for the day, I now encourage my daughter to stare at her iPad for two hours so I can work, a fact that makes me feel like just about the worst mom ever.

I understand that this might be the most first-world problem ever. Poor me. I have the financial resources to be a full-time, stay-at-home mom. I don't have to work, but I want to. I want to "have it all," even if it's making me a stressed-out, exhausted, short-tempered mess, even if doing everything means I'm not doing anything as well as I'd like to be doing it.

So what's the solution? The only one I can come up with is allowing myself to accept that, for now at least, "having it all" just isn't a possibility. Choices have to be made. I know I need to regain a better home life/work life balance, knowing that the scales will be tipped away from work, toward my kids, until they're both in full-day school. They deserve a mom who isn't shoving an iPad at them so she can make a deadline, and I deserve the occasional Housewives episode.

At the end of the day, none of us can really have it all, at least not in the literal sense, and knowing that? Maybe that's the real victory.

9 White Button-Downs That Are Anything but Boring

Crisp, clean, and classic are just some of the adjectives people use when describing a white button-down shirt. When it comes to wardrobe essentials, a white button-down is always somewhere toward the top of the list, right next to the little black dress and a tailored blazer. A button-down is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can own because it's easy to dress up or down.

But not all button-downs have to look the same. There are so many variations of the classic silhouette, each one completely different than the next. Whoever thinks white button-downs are solely reserved for the office obviously hasn't seen the trendy options ahead. From off-the-shoulder silhouettes to bell sleeves, these nine white button-downs feature the freshest details.

The 1 Thing I Learned in Italy That Changed the Way I Cook

I thought I knew how to cook Italian food . . . until I went to Italy. I got the amazing opportunity to travel to Tuscany to stay at Casa Buitoni, home of Buitoni, the fresh-pasta brand you've likely seen in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. I was in good company with chefs who develop authentic recipes for the nearly 200-year-old brand (it was founded by the Buitoni family in 1827), so I think they know a thing or two about Italian food. After a week of making pasta from scratch, visiting wineries and restaurants among the rolling hills of Tuscany, and eating too many incredible meals to count made by chefs born and raised in Italy, I learned an invaluable lesson that really stuck with me and will change the way I cook for myself from now on.

Simplicity is key, and less is more.

The mentality that surrounds food in Italy is unlike everything typical about food in the US. Italians eat slowly. They savor every single bite and every single moment at the table - "family style" means more than just passing around a plate of food for everyone to try. A young woman who grew up in Italy told me her family never served a meal without setting the table, complete with a white tablecloth. And yes, of course I realize that setting up a gorgeous tablescape with a movie-worthy view is not something most people have the privilege of re-creating at home, but what we can (and should) copy is the overall idea. Eating is a time to unplug from the rest of the world and to connect with the food and the people right in front of you.

And most importantly, authentic Italian cooks let the ingredients shine. If you start with the best quality ingredients you can find, you only need a few to make an amazing dish. I'll be the first to admit that using restraint in the kitchen is not my strong suit. My favorite pasta recipes often involve a long list of ingredients (spaghetti with garlic, white wine, thyme, lemon, and more, for example), but now I realize that there is such a thing as too much, and you don't always need 20 ingredients to make the most flavorful dish.

The best thing you can do is start out with really, really good olive oil. Spend the money on that fancier bottle - it's 100 percent worth it. Because, as I learned, olive oil is just as much an ingredient as pasta or parmesan cheese. When you simply use olive oil to sauté vegetables or throw in a tablespoon to prevent your pasta from sticking before adding other ingredients, the pure flavor gets lost in translation. The rich flavor of homemade olive oil is unlike anything else, and it's truly at the heart of Italian cooking - let it be the star.

Use good salt and fresh garlic. Invest in the freshest seasonal vegetables when you can. And, most importantly, take the time to savor every single bite. I thought this pizza topped with merely tomato sauce and a thin slice of roasted garlic would be boring, but I could not have been more wrong. After one bite, I realized it embodied everything Italian food is about: freshness, simplicity, and flavor. And that's what I'm going to aim to re-create in my own home.

A Dad's Job Is To Teach His Daughter How A Lady Should Be Treated

Moms and dads have their own life lessons to teach when it comes to parenting. Our friends at YourTango share insight on a dad's role for his daughter.

Our little girls deserve nothing but the best.

There are certain things a father can't teach his daughter. I'm speaking from experience here.

I know I can't teach her about making friends with other girls, because there are subtleties there that I can't pretend to understand. I can't teach her about her body with any great authority, because I lack firsthand experience. And I can't teach her about what it means to be a girl in modern society, because I simply don't know.

But I'm OK with that. As a man, I know I can't be the ideal teacher for EVERY lesson my daughter needs to learn, which is one of many reasons why I'm glad my daughter has so many kick-ass women in her life.

For every topic I'm completely ignorant about, she has mothers, aunts, grandmas, teachers, family members, friends, and role models that can teach and guide her so much better than I ever could've attempted.

So, what can a dad teach his daughter?

Lots of stuff. Love, empathy, reading, writing, how to drive, the name and superpowers of all the X-Men since 1963.

Dads make amazing teachers, but one thing I'm never going to worry about teaching my daughter is how to be a lady. Because how the hell could a man ever teach that?

Amazingly, there are dads out there who try. They fuss over what their daughters are wearing. They warn their daughters not to "distract" boys. They impart to their daughters their very MALE perspective on what it means for a woman to be "proper." (In the most extreme cases, there are even fathers who insist that their daughters pledge their "purity" to them, as if that's not the creepiest thing in the world.)

Men should NEVER tell a woman what it means to be a woman.

Because . . . well, just say that last sentence aloud and hear how insane it sounds. When men participate in trying to come up with the cultural definition of "womanhood," that's how you end up with a Congress full of old white dudes voting about what women can legally do with their own bodies.

That's taxation without representation. And, if you know your history, you know that always leads to a revolution.

So, I will NEVER criticize my daughter for not being lady-like or ask her to act more feminine, because how the hell do I even know what those words mean?

Here's what I can teach my daughter - I can teach her how she should expect to be treated by men.

There are many ways men can do this.

One of the most popular is one of my least favorite - the father-daughter dance.

I'm not a fan of this institution. Sure, they can be innocent fun and I'm all about dads spending one-on-one time with their daughters, but I think the dances themselves send a strange message.

For the most part, these dances are designed to resemble romantic high school dances and it's a tradition for dads to take their daughters out on a "date" beforehand.

The dad will get his girl a corsage, they'll go have dinner. It's very cute, perfect Facebook photo fodder, but it's a bizarre teaching tool.

Do fathers really think that role-playing dates with their daughters is an ideal way to show them what a functional relationship looks like? It will always be artificial and weird and strangely reinforce the father as a romantic ideal (which isn't particularly healthy for the dad or the daughter).

My daughter isn't going to learn how a man should respect her by me pretending that I'm taking her to prom.

My daughter CAN learn something about how men should treat women, however, by watching how I interact, on a daily basis, with the opposite sex, including her mom.

It's classic modeling behavior. Role-playing will never be a better educational tool than real-world experience.

If my daughter is going to learn how men should treat women, it only makes sense that she's going to learn that by observing me. I'm the primary man in her life (at the moment). The guy she's stuck with until she's old enough to ditch me.

She's going to learn how men treat women in a romantic relationship by observing how I treat my wife every day. That's going to give her a complex look at the realities of an actual loving relationship (not some fake date at a community center).

And it doesn't just stop with my wife. Her view of how men interact with women is going to be informed by ALL of my interactions with women.

The way I treat my mother, her school-friends, my co-workers, retail clerks, random women I meet in the street - THAT is how a dad shows his daughter what respect for women looks like.

So, the pressure is on me, because I KNOW she's always watching. It's a 24/7 teaching job for me.

I can't teach her about her period as well as her mom might, but I can teach her a hell of a lot from my own behavior - by not mansplaining, by not getting all male-gazey, by not being weird about deferring to a woman who knows better just because men of my generation weren't raised to do that.

I can never teach my daughter what it means to be a woman, but I can teach her what she should expect from men, in terms of basic respect, by letting her watch me try to walk the walk every day of my life.

THAT is what a dad can do.

Will I screw up? Hell yeah, I will. But, hopefully, in the end, the effort will be worth it, and my daughter will go out into the world, expecting (no, DEMANDING) an impossibly high standard of mutual respect from every man she meets. It's what she deserves.
