Debra Messing Calls Out Ivanka Trump: "It's Time to Do Something"

Debra Messing isn't done resisting Donald Trump's contentious presidency. The Will and Grace actress delivered a moving - albeit hilarious - acceptance speech at the 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday and addressed the "very bad, and very orange man in our White House . . . at least a few days a month," she joked.

Messing, who took home GLAAD's Excellence in Media Award, called on all Americans to resist Trump's controversial policies and even urged them to text the Congressional switchboard in Washington DC. "Don't be shy, I know all of your cell phones are open because you've been taking selfies all night," she quipped.

Messing then spoke directly to Ivanka Trump, whom she referred to as "the secretary of state," saying, "It is not enough to simply say that women's issues are important to you. It's time to do something." Watch her full nine-minute acceptance speech above to hear her empowering call for action that will inspire you.

Who Is Noah Cyrus? Get to Know Miley's Little Sister

Image Source: Getty / Gregg DeGuire

Noah Cyrus has already started to take over the music scene in a big way, but this certainly isn't her first encounter with the spotlight. As the daughter of Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus and younger sister of Miley and Trace Cyrus (of Metro Station), the 17-year-old has spent much of her childhood in the public eye, but she never thought she would follow in her family's footsteps. "For years I had been riding horses and staying away," Noah told Billboard. "Then two years ago, I started writing [songs] in sessions, and I fell in love with it." Since releasing her debut track, "Make Me (Cry)," last year, she has quickly stolen our hearts with her soulful voice, and we have a feeling it's only just beginning.

1. She's the Youngest Cyrus

Noah is the youngest of six - she has two sisters, Miley and Brandi, and three brothers, Trace, Braison, and Christopher (Billy Ray's son from his previous relationship with Kristin Luckey).

2. She Was on Hannah Montana

Before starting her music career, Noah made a few cameos on Miley's hit Disney Channel show. She played small roles in six episodes of the series and even worked as a background dancer for the 2009 film Hannah Montana: The Movie.

3. She Is an Animal Rights Activist

For her 13th birthday, Noah raised funds for the ban of using horse-drawn carriages in NYC. She later posed in a PETA ad that protested the use of animal dissection in high school lab classes.

4. She Was in a Movie With a Jonas Brother

Miley isn't the only Cyrus with ties to the Jonas Brothers. In 2008, Noah scored her first movie role in the English version of the anime feature film Ponyo alongside the youngest Jonas brother, Frankie.

5. Her Debut Album Is Coming Out This Year

Her first album, NC-17 (which is a play on her initials and age), will come out later this year. So far, she's already released two tracks, including "Make Me (Cry)" and her latest jam, "Stay Together."

With Just 2 Photos, This Mom Shows What It's Really Like to Have Postpartum Depression

You'd never know it by looking at her Facebook feed, but Kathy DiVincenzo has postpartum depression. Like many of us who hide our true selves behind highly curated photos and filters, this mom of two has suppressed a side of her that's just as real as the one she lets the rest of the world see.

"I work twice as hard to hide this reality from you because I'm afraid to make you uncomfortable," Kathy, who also suffers from anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, wrote in a moving Facebook post. "I'm afraid you'll think I'm weak, crazy, a terrible mother, or the other million things my mind convinces me of and I know I'm not alone in those thoughts."

To better describe her dual realities, Kathy posted two photos of herself - one, the vision of motherly perfection, and the other, an honest look at what those first months of new motherhood often look like . . . exhausted, erratic, unhappy.

"I feel like it's time to show you what that can really look like, not just the side of me that's 'Facebook worthy,'" she continued. "The truth is, both of these pictures represent my life depending on the day. I would only ever comfortably share one of these realities though and that's the problem. The only thing more exhausting than having these conditions is pretending daily that I don't."

Her goal in sharing her true self - or selves, rather - with the world?

"We need to stop assuming that the postpartum period is always euphoric, because for one in seven it's not," she said. "We need to start asking new parents how they're doing in a deeper way than the normal, 'so how are you doing?' that triggers the knee jerk, 'everything's great!' response."

Farrah Abraham Responds to Cultural Appropriation Claims: "I Wanted to Bring Culture to the Red Carpet"

Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham is stirring up controversy on the MTV Movie and TV Awards red carpet. The reality TV personality chose to wear a bindi on her forehead, mehndi on her hands, and a maang tikka in her hair, along with a traditional lengha to the event. (Reminder: Farrah has said she is of Syrian, Italian, Sicilian, and Danish descent).

Twitter users were livid, slamming her for cultural appropriation. After all, facets of Farrah's look are of special significance in Indian culture, with mehndi and maang tikka being traditionally worn by brides, while bindi are religious or spiritual embellishments, worn daily or at celebrations.

However, according to outlet TooFab, which got an exclusive interview with the star, Farrah is not concerned "at all" about being accused of cultural appropriation. In fact, she wore this look specifically because she "wanted to bring culture to the red carpet."

"I think this will inspire others to embrace new cultures and have good experiences," Farrah told TooFab, adding that her controversial look made her feel "freaking amazing, Bollywood and sexy!"

Read on to see more shots of Farrah, then check out some of the backlash she's getting on Twitter.

Asia Kate Dillon Is the Change-Maker the Beauty Industry Needs

In a Donald Trump presidency era, where many social issues seem to be moving backwards in time, it's more important than ever to celebrate the change-makers breaking barriers. Actor Asia Kate Dillon is one of those leaders, whose initiatives to normalize nonbinary gender identity in Hollywood are rewriting history. (FYI, nonbinary gender means a person is not exclusively male or female and would usually use the pronoun "they" instead of "him" or "her.")

Asia is credited for playing the first genderqueer character in a mainstream TV show for their role of Taylor Mason in Showtime's Billions. Off-screen, Asia also identifies as genderfluid.

"My assigned sex is Female," Asia recently clarified on Twitter. "My gender identity is Non-binary. Anatomy and biology are complicated. I said sex, only as in anatomy . . . Sex is between legs. Identity is between ears."

This year, Asia made headlines when they submitted their name for an Emmy Award and choose "actor" instead of "actress," because the former is a more gender-neutral word. The public move to push gender boundaries prompted MTV to combine previously male-and-female-separated categories at the MTV Awards, and Asia will take the stage to present the award for best actor in a movie.

"I'm proud of MTV for joining the conversation about breaking down binaries," Asia told W. "Binaries, whether it be man or woman or black or white, they were created to separate us, to create an us and a them. Without binaries, there's only us. Which means we're actually all equal. So to be presenting the first acting award in history that is based solely on performance and not on sex or gender identity is a historic moment and it's a moment that will go down in history, and that is a history I share not only with my family, friends and coworkers, but with all the trans, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming people, particularly people of color, who have been leading the way for change long before I was born."

But that is not the only reason we want to watch Asia. They're also a beauty inspiration - rocking a badass shaved head, seriously gorgeous eyebrows, flawless skin, and unique tattoos. If their career keeps up (Asia has also appeared in Orange Is the New Black, Younger, and Master of None), landing a beauty campaign is only a matter of time. Oh, and if you were wondering, Asia told Ellen DeGeneres their romantic partner identifies as male.

Keep reading to see more reasons why Asia is our latest beauty idol.

Why Millennial Women Are Embracing Atheism

Danielle Schacter never thought she would become an un-Christian. "I slowly became more and more disgusted by the way I saw people treating others," says the 32-year-old, who was raised Baptist. "I didn't want to be associated with a religion that preached so much hate."

Danielle Schacter, who identifies as agnostic, is one of a growing number of people who identify with no religion. Photo courtesy of Danielle Schacter.

Schacter, like so many millennials, has chosen a secular life, and she's not alone: according to the Pew Research Center, only four in 10 millennials say that religion is very important to them, compared with six in 10 Baby Boomers.

The numbers of religiously unaffiliated support this, too: 23 percent of the population identifies with no religion. This number is up from 2007, when it was only 16 percent. Of older millennials, 35 percent are religiously unaffiliated - and they're driving the overall growth of the nonreligiously affiliated in America.

"I didn't want to be associated with a religion that preached so much hate."
This is a big deal. To be religiously unaffiliated means you not only avoid identifying as a Christian or Jew or Muslim, but that you eschew organized faith altogether. From there, "nonreligious" can be broken down into four categories: secularism (the belief in separation of church and state and that all beliefs are equal), agnosticism (the belief that it's impossible to know if there is a god), humanism (the idea that human reason drives us, not higher powers), and atheism (the belief that there is no god). This last group, the atheists, has become increasingly vocal in recent years. They are fighting to keep religion separated from laws that affect them and to shift society away from religious trappings.

What's fascinating is that while millennials are moving away from religion, they are moving toward spirituality. This demographic considers itself just as spiritual as older demographics, even as they represent an exodus out of organized religion and into the throes of secularism. When you consider the issues facing young people today, the reasons for the exodus are easy to understand. In rejecting religion, millennials are asserting their progressive attitudes and passion for social justice. They're committed to the idea that they don't need religion to know the difference between right and wrong.

Perhaps no one represents this cultural shift better than millennial atheist women. While they may sit at the most extreme side of the nonreligious spectrum, atheist women are fueled by the same concerns plaguing millennials in general: a quest for independence and a rejection of the status quo.

The Atheism and Feminism Connection

Lauryn Seering, 27, has never been religious, but she found atheism in high school in reaction to mainstream fundamentalist Christian ideas that condemn her lesbian mother. "Millennial women want autonomy over their own bodies," says Seering, communications coordinator for the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting the separation of church and state.

"They recognize that all the arguments against this autonomy (contraception, birth control, marriage) are religiously fueled," Seering continued. "Women aren't being pressured by society anymore to get married at a young age, have children right away, and tend house while their husbands work."

Schacter identifies as agnostic. She's based in Kansas City, MO, where she founded a digital marketing agency called Boxer & Mutt. To her, growing secularism is a sign of independent women. "It's becoming more socially acceptable for women to think for themselves and really question why things are the way they are rather than blindly accepting them," she says.

Kayley Whalen, 31, is a queer transgender Latinx woman who identifies as "a humanist and an existentialist and an atheist." These different identities certainly influence how she approaches the world. "We have ethical values without the need for the supernatural," Whalen says. "We believe in social justice, that we can live a life with meaning, purpose, and dedication to social justice without the need for supernatural guidance." Unsurprisingly, Whalen's beliefs are tied up in her activist work: she's the digital strategy and social media manager for the National LGBT Task Force and is on the board of directors for both the Secular Student Alliance and the Trans United Fund.

As Whalen epitomizes, many young women who do not believe in god share a point of view that goes beyond just being atheist or just being a woman. The two are intertwined identities oppressed similarly in the United States.

"We have ethical values without the need for the supernatural."
Lee Blackwolf, who runs the popular Facebook page Black Atheists, constantly copes with this intersection. "It's important to me because, as a black bisexual woman, there's not many of us who are atheist," explains Blackwolf, a 29-year-old stay-at-home mother in Twinsburg, OH. "We're not welcomed in most spaces that are atheists. We already have a lot of hurdles to jump through in life so it takes a lot of strength. I lost an entire family because of it. I actually have the luxury to say that I'm better off without them. It's not the same for most."

Blackwolf's concerns hint at societal assumptions about atheist women, which every woman we spoke with touched on: being a woman who isn't religious breaks away from the social norms that frame femininity. Emily Greene, an artist and activist working in promotional marketing in Augusta summed it up best. "You're probably seen as less feminine," the 32-year-old said. "You're definitely judged, looked at more harshly. It's an assumption that it's a negative thing."

Ironically, being atheist can mirror being religious, as it plays a role in many aspects of young life. "That was very important to me in choosing a partner," says Katherine, a 32-year-old HR manager in California. "I have gotten into some debate with friends before where they're like, 'If you're an atheist, why do you care if the other person is of faith?' I'm like, 'You - as, say, a Christian person - would not want to marry a non-Christian person."

Why Are Young Women Interested in Atheism?

Phil Zuckerman, professor of sociology and secular studies at Pitzer College, believes that young people are turning away from religion as a result of how closed-minded and conservative many congregations can be, particularly when they are responsible for enabling xenophobic and queerphobic mindsets. For instance, many churches reject the idea of same-sex marriage, while 71 percent of millennials support it (in comparison with only 46 percent of Baby Boomers).

"A lot of young people are being turned off of by that brand of Christianity," he explains. "They're just seeing religion as an institution and saying, 'Ah, screw it.' Even though that brand of Christianity is not the majority - most Christians are decent, kind people who aren't anti-gay and aren't racist and aren't anti-Islamic. But they don't make the headlines. They're not dominating the news."

The internet is also serving as a conduit for less religion. As technology occupies more of our time, says Zuckerman, it chips away at "religion's ability to maintain a monopoly on truth . . . It's really corroding religion's ability to dominate our culture and dominate people's lives."

While there have always been religious skeptics - the farthest back is believed to be the Charvaka movement in 7th century BC - the present shift away from religion is notable because the numbers of religiously unaffiliated and atheists are way up. Although the movement is still predominately male and white, more women are stepping forward as religion reveals itself to be optional in their lives - and sometimes to stand in the way of their independence.

Zuckerman believes this has to do with traditional organized religions' male-centrism: teaching women that they're second class, must remain virginal, and must stay out of leadership positions. Pair this with the amount of women in the workplace rivaling men, and the group doesn't need to turn to a church for social or financial support that churches typically offer.

Being an Atheist Is a Political Act

Molly Hanson grew up in a Catholic household but has always been skeptical of the "invisible man in the sky" who tells people what to do. The 23-year-old Hanson, like many atheists, finds that questioning faith and religion makes people wonder if something is wrong with her womanness.

"If a woman doesn't bow down to this god and lord, she must have an issue with that god or lord," says Hanson, an editorial assistant at the Freedom For Religion Foundation. "She must have been damaged. There's a reason why she decided to leave that god. She might have been morally corrupted by another man or might have - I don't know - been wronged."

This issue isn't confined to religious communities. One woman - a 30-year-old Indian American writer in New York who declined to give her name - finds this flaw in atheist leaders, too.

"The movement itself is really alienating toward women," she says. "Leaders like Richard Dawkins are pretty sexist and condescending and talk down to women. Women have been left out in those major discussions of atheism."

The nonreligious believe that, once the church is taken out of the state, equality can be achieved.
Whalen agrees: "It's really difficult that one person like a Richard Dawkins or a Bill Maher can be seen as the face of atheism. The difference between a woman who is an atheist, and a male, cisgender atheist is that a woman doesn't have the choice to be a single issue. She can't say, 'Oh, religious discrimination is the most important thing - and being a woman comes second.'"

For women who are atheists, discrimination is complicated further by the many ways their identities intersect. Gender as it relates to religious affiliation is complex, and it's even more complicated as it relates to black female atheists, as Blackwolf can attest. "A lot of black atheist men are often heard saying, 'Black women sure do love them some church!'" she says. "When we start having a discussion, there are implications about where my place in the community should be, and that's behind the man.'"

Atheist Women Want a Future of Equality

In speaking with young atheist and secular women, some through lines appear, among them a hope for equality that could be stymied by religion's grasp on society. There is a desire to normalize differing points of view, from LGBTQ people to atheists.

Katherine sees public events like the inauguration of President Donald Trump as a perfect example. "I was really struck by so much praying happening," she says. "I'd like to see us move kind of away from that and use logic and science and that holistic definition of freedom."

The nonreligious believe that, once the church is taken out of the state, equality can be achieved. Hansen believes these roadblocks arise as the result of unequal representation. "Women understand what it's like to be oppressed by laws that are rooted in religious ideas that oppress women and their sexuality," she explains. "To get more women in government positions is going to be a challenge, especially right now."

When women hold elected office, it inspires more women to run - and more women in government has a powerful trickle-down effect on women as a whole.

But what if these women leaders were atheists? Would they still succeed?

Surveys have shown that atheism is one of the traits in a leader that Americans are most biased against. "I cannot imagine a president who identifies as an atheist," says the Indian-American writer in New York. "I'm a woman and a person of color: a female person of color who is an atheist could never be the president of the United States. It feels like another barrier."

Others, like Whalen, see these many layers as vital to change: "I want a woman politician to run and say that she's an atheist and that she's for reproductive justice, that she's for transgender rights, and win. I want a transgender woman to be able to do that."

Ultimately, for atheist women (and atheists in general) to succeed at changing society, they need to continue on the path they are on and not settle for being silenced. Zuckerman draws parallels to the LGBT community. "Coming out does have an effect," he says. "More and more people feeling comfortable saying 'I'm not that religious' has an effect." Atheists just want to be seen as starting from the same place as any other decent American.

Greene sums it up nicely: "We want to get up, go to work, and enjoy our friends and families and our lifestyles just the same way as the person who gets up on Sunday and goes to church. We have our own ways of self-care. A lot of people find religion and that's how they take care of themselves - and that's great. We just do things a different way and that's OK."

Yikes! 3 Popular Meats Have Been Recalled For Possible E. Coli Contamination

Today in scary food news, a ton of meat - about 5,620 pounds, to be exact - has been recalled for a pretty concerning reason. Marcho Farms, Inc. is recalling its veal, beef, and pork products due to concerns that they're tainted with non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which can cause fatigue, abdominal cramping, and dehydration. Yikes!

The meats were distributed to stores like Food Lion and Walmart in six states - New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Virginia - according to the official US Department of Agriculture news release.

Below is a list of the affected items, which were produced on April 11 and April 14:

  • 60-pound cases of "veal boneless trimmings halal" with case code "5398" and a manufacture date of "04/11/2017"
  • 60-pound cases of "veal trimmings USDA choice" with case code "98" and a manufacture date of "04/11/2017"
  • 9-pound cases of "veal, beef, pork ground for meatloaf" with case code "3122" and a sell-by date of "05/05/2017"
  • 10-pound cases of "veal, beef, pork ground for meatloaf bulk pack" with case code "3125"

If you recently stocked up on any of these meats for making those easy, breezy weeknight dinners, check the labels and toss anything that may be affected!

"We like to focus on making just a few things but making them extremely well. We do make some changes and expansions on occasion. In 2014, we added our Sofritas, last year we added chorizo, and you may have heard the buzz that we're currently set to begin a new dessert [buñuelos] in very select restaurants, so stay tuned for more on that."

There is a way to skip the line.

"Most people don't know that nearly every Chipotle has an extra make-line in the back of the restaurant where digital orders (online or from our ordering app) can be prepared. This means that customers who order digitally benefit from shorter and more accurate pickup times, including the ability to reserve a future pickup time, and can skip the line to pick up their order."

You can get some occasional free stuff.

"We do a number of promotions during the year, from our annual Boorito Halloween promotion to appreciation days for groups like teachers or nurses, and occasionally offer BOGOs or free chips and guac. Customers can stay up to date by signing up for text and email alerts on our webpage."

The most popular order isn't a burrito.

"We serve more burrito bowls than anything else, chicken is the most popular meat, mild tomato salsa is our most popular, and of course our guacamole is a favorite - for good reason."

The burrito bowl was once a secret menu item.

"Our crews will accommodate most any request they can with the ingredients we have if someone wants it. The burrito bowl wasn't on the menu in the beginning but was added because customers ordered it so frequently. We used to make the bowls in the same red baskets we use to serve burritos but lined it with foil to make it a bowl."

Every bit of the food is actually handmade.

"If you were to look into the kitchen of any Chipotle, you'll see it more closely resembles that of a fine dining restaurant than your typical fast-food joint. You'll see people hand frying our taco shells, shredding cheese, dicing jalapeños, steaming rice, hand-mashing guacamole, and grilling chicken and steak in small batches so it is fresh throughout the day. They are cooking fresh food using the same skills and techniques used by classically trained chefs everywhere. Even the food we prepare in central kitchens is made with the same culinary detail to ensure that it tastes as good as it can."

Leftovers are donated.

"We have careful protocols and practices in place to make sure we're minimizing waste. That said, sometimes it's unavoidable. Over the years, we've partnered with more than 1,275 local community organizations to provide food for those who need it most. We are also in our 10th year of partnership with the Harvest Program. Through this organization, we have been able to donate enough food for more than seven million meals throughout the country."

Chipotle is the only national restaurant brand with no funny ingredients.

"This Spring we announced that all of the food we make contains only 51 whole, unprocessed ingredients. We accomplished that with the introduction of our new tortillas, which are free of any industrial additives - natural or artificial. Chipotle is now the only national restaurant brand with no added colors, flavors, or preservatives in any of the ingredients we use to make our food."

Chipotle goes way beyond fresh ingredients.

"We've always used fresh ingredients, but we also know that fresh isn't enough, anymore. We remain committed to serving meat from animals that are raised in more humane ways and without the use of antibiotics or added hormones, local and organically grown veggies when available, cheese and sour cream made with milk from pasture-raised dairy cattle, ingredients that are not genetically modified, and ingredients that contain no industrial additives."

Though Chipotle shared its guacamole recipe, the brand doesn't plan on giving out any other signature recipes.

"A perk of only using real, whole ingredients is that you can find everything we use on our menu at your own grocery store. But when it comes to the amount of each ingredient in a recipe - well, we've got to keep a few secrets."

11 Things You Never Knew About Chipotle, Straight From an Employee

I went straight to the source to discover more Chipotle secrets. The famous Mexican grill had a lot to say about its most popular menu items, future releases, and ways you can save time and money. Be prepared to book it to your nearest Chipotle to satiate your burrito craving after reading these intriguing facts!

The standard burrito weighs over 1 pound!

Let's All Gawk at Jason Momoa's First Red Carpet Appearance - Ever

It's been 17 years since Jason Momoa first stepped onto the red carpet, and he has come a long way. The Aquaman stud got his start on Baywatch in 1999, and a year later, he appeared on the red carpet for the Eighth Annual Seventeen Magazine Party. There's only one picture of the appearance, and as you can see, he hadn't yet grown out his luscious locks (short hair is a good look for him) and he looks a little bit camera shy. Thank goodness he's out of that phase now.

Brace Your Wallets: Fabletics Is Launching a Collaboration With Demi Lovato

"What's wrong with being confident" isn't just a line from one of Demi Lovato's songs; it's a life mantra for her, and she's leading other young women with her positive example. In her latest mission to "empower girls," she's teamed up with Fabletics to launch a limited-edition capsule collection that is not only ridiculously cute (seriously, it's fire), but which also benefits an incredible cause.

Demi Lovato For Fabletics was created in partnership with the United Nations Foundation's Girl Up campaign, "a 'by girls, for girls' movement that empowers girls to become a force for change for girls everywhere," Fabletics said in a press release. It will help fund programs "for some of the world's most marginalized adolescent girls" by "ensuring that they are educated, happy, healthy, safe, and positioned to be leaders in their communities."

True to Demi's body-positivity mission, this collection will be available for all body types, from sizes XXS through 3XL. In a press release, Kate Hudson called Demi "a definitive voice for female empowerment and body positivity - especially for the younger generation - which is something we believe in very strongly at Fabletics." Demi expressed her excitement to be that definitive voice, saying, "I am thrilled to lend my voice to such a powerful brand and organization, both of which represent many of the values I stand for - particularly the importance of empowering girls. Being involved in the creative design process while being able to have a daily impact on young girls' lives around the world is so rewarding to me, making this initiative very dear to my heart."

This morning, Demi posted to Instagram, saying, "Being active is a huge part of my life, so it was important for me to create a line that's accessible, comfortable and fashionable, while inspiring you to take care of your mind and body." Fabletics reinforced this statement in the press release, saying, "The brand is dedicated to creating a community that nurtures inspiring, confident, and spirited girls who are able to realize their best selves."

The capsule collection will be available online this month at Fabletics.com and in all 21 Fabletics brick and mortar stores, and a more extensive collection will debut in August. It will include "bras and leggings," as well as "layering pieces, including tops, jackets, and much more."

It Happened: Clay Jensen and Hannah Baker Reunited at the MTV Movie and TV Awards

The cast of 13 Reasons Why stormed the MTV Movie and TV Awards, but all anyone could really focus on was this cute photo of Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford, who play Clay Jensen and Hannah Baker, respectively, on the show. Their adorable reunion comes after the big announcement that their popular Netflix series will be returning for a second season. And yes, you can expect to see Katherine reprise her role as Hannah! While we wait for the upcoming season, allow this mini reunion of the two stars to hold you over until then.

Emma Watson Was Basically the MVP of the MTV Movie and TV Awards

No one could get enough of Emma Watson at the MTV Movie and TV Awards on Sunday night, and for good reason. After sharing an adorable moment with presenter and nonbinary actor Asia Kate Dillon on stage, the Beauty and the Beast star took home the inaugural award for best actor in a movie for playing Belle, which she celebrated by giving a passionate, important acceptance speech. Later, Emma (dressed like a chic disco ball, natch) bumped into Stranger Things actress and fellow award winner Millie Bobby Brown, who could barely hold it together while meeting her (which, same, Millie). As if all of that wasn't cute enough, she also had the best time with Logan costars Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen, which resulted in one of the best photos of the night.

11 New Books Worth Reading in May

You know what I love about the Spring and Summer seasons? It's suddenly socially appropriate to break out the chick lit (a term I use endearingly). Fall and Winter are for heavy books; when I head to the admittedly shady part of the beach, I like to bring a fun, easy novel with me. Maybe I got it at the airport. Who knows? This May, plenty of new books are being released, and amongst the recipe compilations and self-help guides, there are a handful of truly interesting reads. Here are my picks for the month ahead!

7 Things You Can Do to Help Someone With Anxiety

Anxiety can be a difficult condition to understand if you don't suffer from it. If you have close friends or family members who deal with anxiety, you can be a huge help by being there for them. There are a few simple things you can do that will make a world of a difference when helping somebody harness their nerves. Keep reading for some tips.

1. Ask how you can be helpful.

Everyone deals with anxiety attacks in different ways. Some people want to have space while others will want you to be close by. The easiest way to help someone is to ask them how to do so. The first step is having a conversation.

2. Be understanding.

Telling someone that you don't understand why they're having anxiety or making them feel bad about it will definitely not help. Many people can't explain why panic attacks come on; they just do. As long as you approach the subject with zero judgment and an open mind, your loved one will be more willing to explain their feelings to you.

3. Try to look for signs.

Again, everybody's anxiety develops differently, but knowing what to look for when an attack is coming on is important. Some people have a hard time breathing, become lightheaded, or get very quiet. Once you know anxiety is being triggered, you can help more quickly.

4. Find activities that can distract them from their anxiety.

Take their mind off of the anxiety with an activity. Getting some fresh air, taking a walk, or filling in a coloring book have been known to help. Sometimes even just having a conversation about something they love is a positive distraction.

5. Don't make a scene.

Whether you're at home or out in public, being dramatic is the last thing a person needs while dealing with anxiety. Stay calm and comforting, and don't raise your voice or get too overexcited or agitated.

6. Help them stay positive.

When you're going through a time in life when your anxiety is bad, sometimes it feels like you will never be able to escape it. Helping anxious people remember good memories or positive times in their life can help them get out of that slump.

7. Just be someone that they feel like they can go to.

Nobody is asking you to be around 24/7, but if a person suffering from anxiety knows that there's someone they can talk to for comfort, that's helpful in itself.

Things I Learned at Chrissy Teigen's Palette Launch - and No, She Didn't Get "Extensive Plastic Surgery"

Here's the deal: I got to meet my Twitter queen Chrissy Teigen and help her celebrate the launch of the Becca Cosmetics Becca x Chrissy Teigen Glow Face Palette ($46) by getting an early preview and learning about how it all came to fruition. I also learned a few things she absolutely hates when it comes to makeup, because if there's one thing you can bet on from Chrissy, it's that she'll speak her mind.

Chrissy collaborated with makeup artist Mary Phillips (who also works with Jennifer Lopez!) on every part of the palette. She was clear on a few things - namely, she didn't want the whole thing to be too sparkly or overly shimmery. She wanted it to be easy for everyone to use at home, and she worried that with too much shimmer, people might go crazy and end up looking like a disco ball. The palette, which includes a bronzer, a blush, and two highlighters (one rose gold and one apricot), worried her a bit because she felt the blush was too bright. Because the palette leans more bronze, she and Mary worked to sheer out the pigment of the coral blush so it was complementary to the other pieces of the palette.

The palette focuses on warmer tones instead of cool tones, which makes sense: Chrissy has a warm complexion. Mary explained that it isn't too gold, though, and it's definitely not cool or silver, meaning if you're fair complected or have a deeper tone, it will still work for you. You can sheer out everything if you're fair and layer it if you're deep complected.

As for her dislikes, Chrissy was quick to lay down the law on a few trending makeup and beauty looks.

Liner on her lower waterline

The model and author explained that she lets Mary do whatever she wants when it comes to makeup, but the one stipulation is she cannot add anything insider her lower waterline.

Lip masks

"Waste of f*cking money," she said. "Don't get them."

Washing her face before bed

The model told us that she has "never washed her face before bed." She'll "rip off her eyelashes" but doesn't remove her makeup. And yet her skin is still perfect, which could be attributed to her esthetician, Shani Darden. We can only dream of this type of luck.

Insane Instagram highlighting

"I don't want to be a hater, but I am," she said. "I see all the Instagram posts, and I did not want to look like those girls that just look silver. Do you don't have to be a slay queen just because you look like a silver zorbot. That look is done. I'm tired of silver cheekbones and nose. And I'm f*cking over strobing!" Chrissy later added she has no idea what a zorbot is, but you get her drift.

Armpit fat

She probably doesn't hate it, per se, but when asked about the craziest beauty treatment she received, she admitted that she "sucked her armpits" about nine years ago to get rid of fat pockets.

Also, it's been reported that Chrissy underwent "major plastic surgery," and it's simply not true. The statement was largely taken out of context.

This is what happened: Chrissy brought up that everyone thinks her cheeks are fake. She clarified that they are not, but joked that "everything else is." She did point to her forehead and her mouth area, which I interpreted as referring to getting Botox in her forehead and her veneers. This is something she's been very open about in the past. There was no discussion of extensive plastic face or body surgery. In fact, the only plastic surgery brought up was the aforementioned armpit liposuction - and playfully mentioning her mother's nose job.

Now that that's cleared up, I have to say I haven't been happier with a palette in a very long time. I want to look dewy and glowy when I apply highlighter, and even with some Becca products, I feel like the highlight isn't as sheer or natural as I'd like it to be. This is a palette you can wear to work, running errands, brunch, a big event, breastfeeding your child - doesn't matter what it is, you can wear it and feel natural while doing so.

The Ingredient You Should Never Add to Pasta

There's a nearly endless list of ingredients you could add to pasta, but the list of things you shouldn't add is much shorter. And one of them is chicken . . . well, a certain kind of chicken. Steamed or boiled chicken is a major "no" when it comes to pasta pairings, because the soft textures just don't complement each other. I learned this advice from someone who's certainly qualified to give it: Lorenzo Boni, executive chef of Barilla America, who's from Bologna, Italy, and has been cooking pasta for decades. He comes up with creative ways to cook pasta all the time, like making a giant pot of spaghetti like risotto and topping truffle-butter pasta with a soft-boiled egg. And while he'd be open to experimenting with plenty of pasta ideas, he'd never recommend treating your chicken as an afterthought.

While I ate the aforementioned truffle pasta with Lorenzo at a Barilla dinner, he explained why you should never add steamed chicken to pasta, saying to me, "A lot of times Americans use it as a functional protein for pasta, but it's not cooked right." He continued, "It's like a protein pill," meaning it's simply there to add protein but contributes no flavor. He even went on to say, "Pasta with chicken is considered hospital food in Italy." Yikes! He speaks the truth. It's always a good idea to add different textures to pasta so you don't end up with an entirely mushy dish.

The good news is there are plenty of pasta recipes with chicken that are Italian-chef-approved. Just make sure your chicken is well seasoned and has texture, whether it's grilled, pan-fried, or panko-breaded. Sometimes the best lesson you can learn in the kitchen is not what to cook with, but instead how to cook it.

Paris Jackson's Met Gala Dress Might Have Meant More Than You Think

Paris Jackson arrived at the Met Gala with the Calvin Klein crew, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, and, of course, Raf Simons. She was dressed in a Calvin Klein By Appointment dress, a sleek black midi belted with a slash at the midriff, and Tiffany & Co. jewels. Just a few days later, Page Six reports that 19-year-old Paris, who recently signed with IMG Models landed a seven-figure contract with Calvin Klein.

It wouldn't be too far off, since Paris was also spotted hanging out with Millie Bobby Brown, the current face of Raf's By Appointment campaign. We reached out to the brand for a statement and will update when we receive confirmation on the news. Until then, let's just admire Paris's Met Gala dress one last time from every angle.

It's Hard to Argue With This Dad's Stance on Spending on Vacations vs. Toys

Looking back on my childhood, I can't remember more than one or two toys I really loved (my American Girl doll and Nintendo 64), but I can remember something, if not most things, about every vacation my parents ever took me on, whether it was just the three of us or an extended family affair. There's something about those memories from long weekends or even weeks away that sticks with me so much more than the toys I had sitting in my room for years. So why, as parents, do we spend so much money on kid's toys each year when we could possibly save up those Benjamins for a family trip?

Oliver James, Britain's bestselling psychological author who writes about the relationships between parents and their children, reports that around one in five gifts we give our children are not actually wanted or valued. Regardless, holiday gifts, birthday presents, rewards, and "just because" toys and games build up on playroom shelves and in toy boxes all the same.

"The whole business of providing material commodities for kids - in evermore expensive forms as they get older - is entirely, 100 percent, about propping up the industry that profits from it," James told The Telegraph. "On the other hand, family holidays are definitely valued by children, both in the moment and for long afterwards in their memory. So if you're going to spend money on something, it's pretty clear which option makes more sense."

James notes that most adults would prefer experiences over material things, and that kids are no different. However, he notes not to plan activities that may be "deathly boring" to the majority of kids. "The first and simplest mistake that an awful lot of parents make is confusing what they find exciting about a holiday with what their children will . . ." he said. "Children see the world differently, through consumption for example: the way that French cafes have Orangina instead of Fanta is fascinating to kids, and details like that will stick with them for long after the holiday ends."

He continued, sharing details of a family vacation to Paris he took with his 10-year-old and 14-year-old:

"She was quite interested in the art. The only thing that even vaguely interested him was a shop that was essentially the French equivalent of Sports Direct. They both, however, really enjoyed mocking me for the cheapskate, appalling accommodation I'd booked. After the holiday, it became the stuff of legend. And that's not to be sniffed at."

James's biggest takeaway from this, perhaps, is that children will appreciate the ability to be carefree and playful with their parents while on vacation, and his logic is impossible to argue with. "The exam system that we put children through these days can be incredibly stressful, just as much so as the strains of adult life. Holidays remove us, physically, from our highly pressured everyday lives where everyone's focused on meeting targets," he said. "They are times when everyone can relax and be playful together."

Barack Obama Asks Congress to Have "Courage" to Fight the New Healthcare Bill

Former President Barack Obama took little time to speak out against the American Health Care Act. In an award acceptance speech, Obama implored Congress to have the "courage" to do what's right when it comes to health care and repealing Obamacare.

The former president spoke about health care, courage, and keeping hope during these wary times as he accepted the 2017 Centennial John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award from the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation on May 9. His speech remarked on the members of Congress who helped vote in the Affordable Care Act, even though it might've "cost them their new seats, perhaps end their political careers." However, Obama believes that they did what they felt was right and showed the meaning of "courage." He then asked that today's Congress members do the same.

"I hope that current members of Congress recall that it actually doesn't take a lot of courage to aid those who are already powerful, already comfortable, already influential," he said. "But it does require some courage to champion the vulnerable and the sick and the infirm, those who often have no access to the corridors of power. I hope they understand that courage means not simply doing what is politically expedient but doing what they believe deep in their hearts is right."

"We need courage to stand up to hate not just in others but in ourselves."

Obama also tried to reassure any Americans who feel scared about the times we're living in. He mentioned how former President Kennedy lived in a more troubling era, but he still braved it. Obama reminded Americans "we need courage to stand up to hate not just in others but in ourselves . . . At such moments, we need courage to believe that together we can tackle big challenges like inequality and climate change. At such moments, it's necessary for us to show courage in challenging the status quo and in fighting the good fight but also show the courage to listen to one another and seek common ground and embrace principled compromise."

It's clear where the former president stands on the new Trumpcare bill that will eliminate healthcare for an estimated 24 million Americans. You can watch Obama's entire speech ahead.

Pope Francis Has Some Harsh Words About Using "Mother" to Describe a Bomb

When the United States military dropped the largest nonnuclear bomb in its arsenal, dubbed the "Mother of All Bombs," on April 13, the reaction was mixed among the press and politicians. Some outlets praised the detonation as a stunning show of strength, while others admonished the glorification of war. Pope Francis, a consistent critic of populist rhetoric around the world, is the most recent to denounce the weapon and its label.

On May 8, the pope was speaking to an audience of students at the Vatican when he criticized how the weapon was described by the military. Though officially called a Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), the pope took issue with its nickname.

"I was ashamed when I heard the name," Pope Francis said of bomb dropped on an eastern province of Afghanistan. "A mother gives life and this one gives death, and we call this device a mother. What is happening?"

Pope Francis has staunchly defended immigrants and religious freedom, and cautioned against an abundance of power. Without naming him directly, the pope has also censured President Donald Trump's many controversial policies. The two are scheduled to meet at the Vatican on May 24.

Charlie Hunnam, Forever Badass, Gets Candid About Being Picked On as a Kid

Charlie Hunnam may be known for playing badass characters (cough, Jax Teller, King Arthur, cough), but back in the day, he was actually picked on as a child. In a recent interview with The Red Bulletin, the actor opened up about getting into his leading role in King Arthur and the traumas he suffered as a child. "I got into a lot of fights, losing some and getting severely beaten a few times," he said. "When that happens to you, you just feel like, 'I'm going to do everything in my power to never be in a situation like this again.' Hence you go out and learn how to fight." He explained that he still does martial arts, but he realized at one point that he started to carry that tough attitude into every room. "You realize you've become a slave to the thing you're afraid of," he said. "In a lot of ways, I started channeling my father."

Charlie's father was a "formidable guy," he said, adding, "What I did was play a lot of really hard characters. I felt that I exorcised those fears by being a macho dude on screen." Later, that feeling bled into his real life. "It's not that I was a bully, but I identified with having the respect of the men in any circle I was a part of," he said. "Now I realize that's just a bunch of nonsense, because I know who I really am."

He's certainly shown his softer side lately, recently charming fans everywhere while talking about his heartbreak at 13 years old and the time he rescued his cat. Yep: super hot and super sweet.
