A Trainer Gets Brutally Honest About Why You Aren't Seeing Results
I have some tough love for you today. It's about your workouts. You go to the gym several times a week, sometimes twice in one day, and yet you aren't as fit as you should be.
As a certified group exercise trainer and indoor cycling instructor, I've taught hundreds of classes. Based on what I see, I think a lot of you are shortchanging yourself. Taking a step back and getting honest about your approach will help you work out smarter, and maybe even harder.
1. You Aren't Paying Attention
Some instructors are better than others, but let's assume you aren't wasting your time with bad trainers. When you go to a class, are you listening to what you are being asked to do? Do you pay attention to alignment cues in yoga? Do you check your form in weight training?
Listen to what the people in spandex wearing microphones are saying. They are certified experts who take continuing education classes and spend hours creating quality workouts. They have taken on the burden of exercise selection, interval timing, choreography, and sequencing.
Sometimes the key to success is recognizing that you can't get there on your own. You wouldn't ask an accountant to do your taxes and then scribble all over the return as she was filling it out would you? Trust your instructors. They want to get you there as badly as you do.
2. You Aren't Working Hard Enough
Here's a dose of tough love: instructors know how hard you are working, and that you aren't always tapping your potential.
Example: you are in an indoor cycling class and your instructor asks you to add resistance. Everyone adds gear, except for you because you don't want it to be "too hard." When the music picks up and the entire class is straining to get up that hill, there you are, pedaling like a demon, barely breaking a sweat.
Another example: you are in a weight-training situation and even though you've been doing the same moves for months, you're still using the same weights. You wonder why you aren't getting stronger. Guess what? You aren't challenging your muscles when you always choose the same weights. Pick up something heavier. What's the worst thing that can happen? It's too heavy and you have to switch to lighter weights to finish? Do that every time if you want to see results.
Final example: you are in a HIIT class. There are people that are going to go half-speed the entire time. And there are people that are going to stop working halfway through the interval. You know how I know? Because I CAN SEE THEM! Don't be self-conscious; no one is staring at you while you work out. But the instructor is scanning the room for safety reasons and can see how hard you're working. I promise that you'll see better results when you put in the effort.
3. You Aren't Competing With Yourself
Stop comparing yourself to the other people in class. Who knows what they had for breakfast? How many workouts a week they do when you don't see them? It's not about them. It's about you and what you can achieve. Whenever I teach class, I want my students thinking, "Today I am going to do more than I did last time. I am going to add more gear. I am going to hold my sprint longer. I am going to pick up the eight-pound dumbbell instead of the five."
You go to your classes to improve yourself. You have special strengths and abilities. You may struggle at push-ups but you can plank for two minutes. You may have spaghetti arms but can crush squats all day long. Be you. Don't worry about anyone else. Stay on your own mat, mentally and physically. Your fitness will blossom.
4. You Don't Accept What You Can't Change
You have to set reasonable expectations. You can't do 1,000 burpees in 10 minutes and you will never change the biology of your body. If you're bottom heavy, you will likely always trend that way when gaining weight. If all the women in your family get saggy underarms by the time they are 40, you probably will too. However, you can tone and shape that bottom, heavy or not. You can strengthen and tighten your triceps to help that underarm sag. But remember: there is no amount of exercise that will completely transform you into someone else - and you shouldn't want it to. You were made to be you, unique and special. You can be the best you possible, and that should be your goal. Once you accept that, you can stop fighting your body and start working with it to achieve your goals.
5. You Reward Workouts With Food
We all do it. Now that I've worked out, I can go have that bin of pasta I've been craving. I can hit the drive-through for that burger and fries "because I've earned it." You haven't though. You've earned the right to refuel your body. You've worked so hard to achieve a higher level of fitness, to lose weight, to feel good about yourself. And yet you sabotage it, sometimes daily, by rewarding your workouts with food.
It's time we stepped back from food. Instead of it becoming a reward system, it should be a means to an end. The reward for the work is not a consumable. It's an intangible. It comes from within us. It's called pride. Satisfaction. Self-confidence. You can't get those things from a drive-through. If you want the burger, eat it. But don't confuse yourself about why you are having it. You haven't "earned" it. You've allowed it. And that's OK, once in a while. The next time you see that neon sign calling to you, though, think about where you are really headed, physically, and whether that detour is worth it on your path to well-being. If not, keep driving.
Best of luck on your path to greater health and wellness. Remember, you can start each day fresh. Take each class like it's your last. And be kind to yourself: you've only got the one body, so help it go the distance.
The 1 Popular Beauty Product That Could Be Ruining Your Skin
In recent years, oil cleansing has surged in popularity, with many acting as if it is the holy grail of skin care techniques. To be fair, washing one's face with oil can have incredible benefits, including a hydrated complexion, a reduction in (or total disappearance of) blemishes, and a lit-from-within glow. But according to Kazumi Toyama, global SK-II senior manager of technical marketing and scientific communications, cleansing oil is not necessarily the cure-all method many believe it to be.
"Cleansing oil is very good at removing lots of oil," she explained. "But it's not so good for the skin." Kazumi found that in her research of Japanese consumers, women were not properly using this type of cleanser and were completely stripping their complexions of all natural oils. "The way they are using the cleansing oil, it's like, 'Oh, no, no, no.' It dries out the skin."
That's because the very mechanism that makes this type of cleanser so effective also makes it potentially harmful. Think back to your high school chemistry class. Do you remember learning about solubility, or "like dissolves like"? Oil and water do not mix (think of a bottle of salad dressing), but two kinds of oil will easily mix, which is what happens when you're applying cleansing oil to your face.
The specially designed product dissolves sebum and then emulsifies so it's easy to remove with water. However, if your face feels dry and tight after oil cleansing, you've overdone it. Not only will removing all that moisture from your skin dry it out (duh!), but it will also make your complexion look dull, sallow, and wrinkly, and can even cause breakouts.
If you're a new convert to oil cleansing, let your skin be your guide. A formula specially designed for this, like SK-II Facial Treatment Cleansing Oil ($70) (vs. DIY with carrier and essential oils), should not leave you with a sensitive or stripped sensation. Use three pumps of product to start with and massage it into dry skin using circular motions. You will see the texture transform from an oil to a milk - after it's fully emulsified, rinse your face with water. At this point, your complexion should feel soft and dewy, never squeaky clean (if your face feels a bit tight, use less next time you cleanse).
It's essential that you finish your cleansing ritual by adding additional "good" hydration to your skin via an essence or moisturizer. This will ensure that your complexion doesn't dry out or retaliate by overproducing sebum. Shop the best cleansing oils for your skin type here, then learn about why you should try an essence.

Texas Lawmakers Just Approved a Bill That Legalizes Adoption Discrimination
Texas GOP lawmakers are leading a crusade to enact some of the harshest immigration and religious laws in the country. Following the passage of a pernicious "show me your papers" bill aimed at immigrants, Republican state congressmen are attempting to pass another discriminatory bill that targets Texas's LGBTQ community. House Bill 3859 would allow adoption agencies to reject potential parents based on their sexual orientation. Despite sharp criticism from House Democratic lawmakers, HB3859 passed through the House on May 9 and will head to the Senate for a vote.
Called the "Freedom to Serve Children Act," HB3859 would extend "religious liberty" to the Texas child welfare system, meaning state care workers would be afforded the freedom to refuse services if they infringe upon their religious beliefs. If the provider is able to prove "sincerely held religious beliefs," the proposed bill would legally protect agents of the state from discrimination claims.
While the proposed legislation protects faith-based organizations' right to refuse service, it also mandates an alternative if service is refused. House Representative James Frank, author of HB3859, told CNN that the bill simply seeks to preserve religious institutions' freedom. "[HB3859] specifically requires the state to ensure that alternate providers are available to offer any services that a faith-based provider declines to provide due to religious conflicts," Frank said in a statement.
Critics have lined up to denounce the bill. In a statement, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas described HB3859 as "opening the door to widespread discrimination and disregard of laws that should be equally applicable to all Texans." The legal and policy director of the ACLU, Rebecca Robertson, also echoed this statement.
"All of us can agree that when religious beliefs can be accommodated without imposing on the rights of others, our laws should protect people of faith from government intrusion," Robertson said. Democratic lawmakers are equally as perturbed by the law's passage through the House and its potential to harm children purely because an adult rejects another adult's beliefs.
"We're further casting these children off. We're making it more difficult for them to be adopted," Democratic House Representative Jessica Farrar said.
The Etsy Shops You Should Buy From, According to the Site's Trend Expert
When I want a unique or vintage item, the first place I check is Etsy. I've found the coolest DIY shorts there, a rose gold bar necklace, and beautiful succulents. But as much as I love browsing the site on my own, Etsy has a huge selection of independent sellers, and it can be tough to navigate the many pages. (A search for "one-piece swimsuit" yields over 10,000 results.)
To make shopping on Etsy easier, I got the inside scoop from the site's resident trends expert, Dayna Isom Johnson. Not only does Dayna know where to look, but she's also well-versed in the season's trends, including statement earrings and '80s revival pieces. After showing me where to find such key items, Dayna revealed what she's personally shopping for. Ahead, we have her curated list of sellers every fashion girl should check out and the one item we're already eyeing from each shop.
Betsy DeVos's Graduation Speech Was Interrupted by Students Booing Her
Graduating students at a historically black college sent a clear message to Betsy DeVos: she's not welcome at their school. The secretary of Education was met with turned backs, booing, and an unsurprising amount of vitriol as she attempted to speak at the commencement ceremony on May 10.
DeVos, who once said historically black colleges were "real pioneers when it comes to school choice," was this year's commencement speaker at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL. The school, which is a historically black college (HBC), was ill-prepared for the reception to DeVos. Students turned their backs as her name was announced and throughout her speech, boos persisted.

According to Adam Harris, a reporter for The Chronicle, a few people from the audience also walked out with their fists held up.

DeVos is sticking to her prepared remarks even as students continue to boo. There are cheers as some walk out holding fists up.
- adam harris (@AdamHSays) May 10, 2017
The booing grew so loud and consistent that the school president, Dr. Edison O. Jackson, warned the students the school would cancel commencement and mail them their degrees.
Jackson interrupts: "If behavior continues your degrees will be mailed to you."
- adam harris (@AdamHSays) May 10, 2017
Protests against DeVos's commencement speech were held last week, and the school also received a petition to cancel her appearance with 60,000 signatures, reports CNN.

An Exclusive First Look at Tarte Clay Play Palette Featuring 12 Contour Shades
Match point: Tarte. You can thank the brand - known for creating natural beauty products before "organic" was a buzz word - for making your dream Summer palette. We're excited to exclusively break the details about Tarte's Clay Play Face Shaping Palette (launching on tartecosmetics.com on May 21 for $46).
This is truly the ideal palette for you - and everyone in your Summer share house. Clay Play contains 12 shades, which can be used universally on brows, eyelids, cheeks, and for the overall complexion. There are nine neutral-to-smoky matte eye shadows that can be intensified or sheered out. Dunes and Smoke will likely work on most brows, while Journey can be the base of your trendy pink eye look, and Solstice is one of those dream highlighters. Three big tins of contour powders cater to a bevy of skin tones. Expect the same creamy, silky powder textures and long-wear capabilities the brand is known for.
What makes this palette extra special is that the powders are all infused with Amazonian clay. The ingredient helps to remove surface oil while hydrating cells (basically, it's balancing!), so it actually makes your skin better while you wear it.
Plus, how chic is that tortoiseshell packaging? Expect more Amazonian-clay-infused launches coming this Summer.
3 Simple Steps to Look 10 Pounds Lighter
Good posture not only makes you look confident, but it can also help you look up to 10 pounds thinner. No matter how toned those abs might be, slouching curves the spine forward, creating rolls on the belly. It can also make you appear inches shorter than you truly are. From my time in the Pilates studio, I can tell you the majority of my clients tuck the pelvis under and let the ribs fall behind their center, allowing the shoulders to round forward. This makes a giant C-curve out of the spine. And this is definitely not good posture.
The solution to the droopy spine and tucked pelvis is pretty simple:
- Stick out your booty: You need to correct the pelvis before you can affect the rest of the torso. To untuck your pelvis, you need the pubic bone and the two bones at the top of the pelvis (known as ASIS) to form a triangle perpendicular to the ground. To find your ASIS, put your hands on your hips.
- Move ribs forward: Once the pelvis is aligned straight up and down, you need to place the ribcage on top of it. I like to think of the pelvis and the ribcage as the building blocks of the torso. Moving your ribcage forward over your pelvis, rather than having it hang back, lengthens the front of your torso, which naturally helps to pull in the abs. Think of the ribcage moving up and forward. With the ribs and pelvis in alignment, pulling the deep abs to the spine - without squeezing your butt or rounding the spine - will help maintain this neutral position of the back.
- Open your chest: Slouching allows the shoulders to roll forward and inward, closing down the chest. Simply think of expanding your shoulders wide to the sides. Your breast bone (aka sternum) is technically part of your ribcage, so continue the process by moving that forward-and-up feeling in your chest, too.
This postural tip works whether you're sporting a bikini or a one-piece, wearing a halter dress or short shorts. Not only will you look good, but your spine will appreciate your good posture too.
Take a Drink Every Time Kevin Bacon Says the Word "D*ck" in This Interview
Kevin Bacon stars in the new Amazon series I Love Dick, and has been making the rounds to promote the show before its May 12 debut. On Tuesday, the actor stopped by Today to chat with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb about the project, in which he plays a renowned Texas artist and was required to show full-frontal nudity. During his interview, Kevin went over the f*cking top when talking about the show and probably said the word "d*ck" no less than 15 times during the five-minute video. If this was a drinking game, you'd be sh*tfaced.

8 Theories We Have About the Once Upon a Time Finale Based on the Pictures
Once Upon a Time's two-hour long season six finale (and possible series finale) is days away, and emotions are heightened. Now that the Black Fairy's dark curse has hit Storybrooke, some of our favorite characters are in grave danger, especially the Savior. After Henry wakes up from the curse, he finds that the beloved town has been turned upside down: the Black Fairy is the new mayor and Emma is stuck in a mental hospital. As he tries to help his mom regain her memory and make her believe again, the rest of the gang is trapped in a crumbling Fairy Tale Land, trying to find a way back to their loved ones before the final battle. Even though Jennifer Morrison confirmed she's leaving the show at the end of this season, these stills don't seem to give too much away about the fate of her character. Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz recently dished about what's to come to Entertainment Weekly, but we can't help but theorize even further. Here's a quick rundown on what we can glean so far:
- The Black Fairy has the storybook
- Archie is working for her
- The curse didn't send everyone to Fairy Tale Land
- Emma might not remember who Henry is
- Gideon fights Emma, not the Black Fairy
- Henry, Snow White, and Zelena are all present for the final battle
- Emma is wearing her "armor" (her red leather jacket)
- Gideon is dressed a lot like his father Rumple, who is nowhere to be seen.
Honestly, Taco Bell's Naked Chicken Chips Are the Best Fast Food Invention
I highly advise you get yourself to your closest Taco Bell on May 11 to try out the new Naked Chicken Chips, because you will not be disappointed. The chicken chips, which came out of the Naked Chicken Chalupa, are served with Taco Bell's famous Nacho Cheese Sauce, and the pairing is actually perfect. The chips are crispy all-white chicken and come in either a pack of six or a pack of 12. Honestly, the chips are fairly small and thin, so knocking out a pack of 12 really isn't too bad.
The chips themselves are very lightly breaded, and the breading isn't actually all that crispy. You get a crunch, but they're akin to a Wendy's nugget rather than a McDonald's one. If you tried the Naked Chicken Chalupa, you know what you're in for, but if not, the breading has Taco Bell's signature Mexican spices. Combine that with the nacho cheese sauce, and you have it all. The sauce gives the chip a good bit of moisture and a little more spice.
The Naked Chicken Chips will only be around for a few weeks, so don't miss out on them. I'm well-aware that I like pretty much everything on the Taco Bell menu and would recommend any of it, but these chicken chips do fit right in and are completely delicious. They take the chip-and-dip combo to a whole new level.

20 Things My Dad Wishes Someone Had Told Him in His 20s
Your 20s is a constant battle between thinking you have it all figured out and life giving you a harsh reality check. It's a period of trial and error, but it can also be one of the most fun decades. Much of my life knowledge is from my dad, who's filled with never-ending lessons. Though he's considered to be pretty young for a father at 49, his professional and personal success speaks far beyond his years. As much as I've become jaded by his daily inspirational texts, I know there's great value to them. His advice has been nothing but helpful to me as a 20-something, so I figured others could benefit, too. Here are 20 things that my dad wishes someone had told him around this age.
- It's OK to be insecure with yourself; it's discovering time.
- Try to experience everything! (Culture, dating, sexuality, foods, other religions.)
- Traveling around the world is a must - not by Four Seasons Hotels, but simple backpacking and discovering the world. You'll start to discover yourself in the process of what's truly important.
- Get off the train, and in stillness without outside distractions, plan your own life versus your parents' expectations, society's, etc. Ask yourself: What's my purpose? Why am I here? What brings true joy to my life? What makes me happy?
- Don't ever chase money! Chase, discover, and cultivate your passion - money will follow.
- Don't get pressured into marriage due to cultural heritage, your parents, something that's lacking within yourself, or thinking someone will make you happy or fulfill your emptiness.
- It's never a failure, only experience.
- Failure is not being able to trust your instinct and going for it. If you have never failed anything, you haven't done anything.
- He/she wasn't THE one! There will be others, trust me!
- Love yourself first. When the plane is going down, they don't instruct you to help others first.
- Success can be reached by many different roads. Don't think college is the only avenue to success. (Look at all the billionaires around the world today and in the past.)
- Don't get married until you're in your 30s. You're still discovering yourself.
- You'll be incredibly disappointed thinking success is all about self-acquirement (big homes, fancy cars, money, country club memberships, etc.). Yes, it's great to have nice toys and there's nothing wrong with wanting nice things. But you'll be disappointed if you consider this as success and think it will make you complete and happy.
- Think BIGGER! If you're going to plan your life, think HUGE! The process is still the same.
- Learn to be more loving, understanding, caring, and open-handed to the world with your heart, time, and money.
- You've been brainwashed by your parents from the moment you were born, intentionally and unintentionally (who you're supposed to be, what religion you're supposed to believe, what your career should be, who you should marry). Almost every aspect of your life has been loaded into your hard drive. Simply ask yourself: why?
- Create a path for others to follow.
- You must learn about your financial future because no one will take care of your money but you. Start early and use compound interest and equity to your advantage in your 20s like real estate, 401(k), SEP IRAs, annuities, stocks, etc. Buy the staple companies in the US and never sell or trade.
- Think for yourself and create your own "why" in life. There is no right or wrong way to live your life, because it's your life! So go live it to the fullest and have more joyful days than sad ones.
- Oh, and one more thing: take care of your badass body in your 20s. If you don't or think you will always look like that, you'll be greatly disappointed and shocked later.
What Does the Queen Have For Breakfast? Get a Peek Into Life Behind Palace Doors
The queen has always maintained a dignified silence when it comes to her home life - she never gives interviews and rarely discloses even the tiniest tidbit of personal information - but a glance at the 800 or so companies that hold Royal Warrants provides a wealth of detail about her majesty's private life. A Royal Warrant is an official mark of recognition that is granted to any company that has provided the queen with goods or services for five years or more, and it allows the company to display the queen's coat of arms on its packaging and promotional materials. Prince Philip and Prince Charles are the only other two members of the family who can grant a Royal Warrant, but the most telling are those companies that provide the queen with everything from agricultural machinery to marzipan and lipsticks to helicopter engines.

Breakfast
Cereal is the queen's breakfast of champions, and her choices are reassuringly traditional. Kellogg's, Weetabix, and Quaker Oats all hold a Royal Warrant, and the various cereals are kept in Tupperware containers to keep them fresh. Her majesty's morning tea of choice? Twinings English Breakfast; milk, no sugar.
Drinks
If one was ever to find oneself at a cocktail party at Buckingham Palace, it's good to know what will be served - and for the most part it's not as fancy as you might expect. Gordon's gin, Pimm's, Bacardi, and Bulmers cider are all warrant holders; however, there are numerous suppliers of fine wines and eight different Champagne producers including Bollinger, Krug, Lanson, and Winston Churchill's favorite, Pol Roger (which was also served at William and Kate's wedding).
Beauty Favorites
The queen has been a fan of Clarins ever since her coronation, when she commissioned the company to design a shade of lipstick to complement her gown. It has been reported that she favors its Ever Matte Mineral Powder Compact in Transparent Fair and Hand and Nail Treatment Cream, as well as its eye shadow palettes.
Elizabeth Arden has been a Royal Warrant holder for 55 years, and two of the queen's favorite products are the Eight Hour Cream and Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick in Bold Red. Her majesty favors Floris perfume and Bronnley soap, as well as quintessential British brand Yardley and the more modern Molton Brown.

Eco-Wares
Prince Charles is known for championing environmentally friendly products, but the queen is quietly also big on eco-fare. She uses a number of green warrant-holders including Delphis Eco, which provides environmentally friendly cleaning products, and Agri-cycle, which uses agricultural waste such as spray cans, fertilizer bags, and shrink wrap and recycles it into furniture, flooring, and containers.
The Everyday vs. the Extraordinary
The queen is known for having pretty simple tastes when it comes to what she eats at home, and her wartime upbringing is reflected in her unfussy style - so it's no surprise that she has Heinz ketchup, Ryvita crackers, Baxters soups, and Robinsons fruit squashes at home. She's also a fan of British High Street favorite Boots the Chemist. However, she is a monarch, and the mind-boggling roster of Royal Warrant holders also includes gold-leaf manufacturers, medal makers, chandelier refurbishers, animal pregnancy scanners, calligraphers, silk flower crafters, name-badge makers, helicopter engine manufacturers, and even a taxidermist.
British Artisanal Produce
The royal family are all big supporters of local produce, and many of the queen's choices are very specific - bacon from Denhay Farms, sausages from Musk's, eggs from Noble Foods, jam from Wilkin & Sons, and coffee from H.R. Higgins. It's a good thing she doesn't have to do the shopping herself - a simple cooked breakfast would take a whole day to accumulate.

Interior Design
When it comes to furnishing her properties, the queen unsurprisingly opts for luxury, tradition, and history, choosing AW Hainsworth for fabrics, Sanderson for wallpaper, Albert E. Chapman for curtains, and Heirlooms for fine linens. Charles Farris provides beeswax church candles, and in a strange quirk, A Nash supplies old-fashioned Harry Potter-style brooms for the royal sweeping. Her majesty also likes using philanthropic organizations and purchases mattresses from Glencraft - 70 percent of whose workforce is made up of people with disabilities.
Phones, Laptops, and Tablets
The queen Skypes with various members of her family and tweets to her many fans - and now we know how. Her majesty is clearly an Android kind of lady, as Samsung is listed as a Royal Warrant holder.
Sweet Treats
The queen loves chocolate (and always gives it up for Lent), but on the other 325 days of the year, she has her pick of the everyday supermarket brands Cadbury and Nestlé, along with the more high-end Charbonnel et Walker, Prestat, and Bendicks - which specializes in after-dinner mints.

The Best of the Rest
Undergarments: Quaintly billed as "corsetieres" on the Royal Warrant holders website, the incredibly fancy Rigby & Peller is the one entrusted with creating the queen's intimates. It has also been reported that the Duchess of Cambridge has called upon the services of the company, too.
Holistic health: The queen is a traditionalist in many ways, yet Ainsworths Homeopathic Pharmacy has a Royal Warrant - so it seems the queen is also a fan of alternative therapies.
Christmas supplies: When William, Kate, George, and Charlotte gather with the rest of the family at Sandringham, they will be tearing open traditional metallic foiled wrapping paper and pulling bespoke crackers from specialist Christmas wares company Tom Smith.
The Debloating High-Protein Snack That's Already in Your Fridge
If you've yet to discover the importance of gut health, it's time to get familiar with the microbiome and how it impacts bloating and digestion. The balance of bacteria is essential, and often our digestive tract needs a boost in the good, healthy bacteria . . . aka probiotics.
You don't have to take supplements to get your gut back on track and banish bloating; you can eat your way to a flatter belly and happier digestive system. Yogurt just so happens to be one of the best ways to get gut-friendly probiotics. Assuming you're not lactose-intolerant, adding some yogurt into your diet can nourish your gut, fill you up on protein, and fight bloat with active cultures.
Be sure to avoid yogurts that are high in sugar, as sugar can feed the unhealthy bacteria, in turn releasing gases that cause bloating - not exactly what you're going for, right? Opt for a high-protein strained Greek yogurt or even Icelandic - also known as skyr (which has seen a rise in popularity recently) - with slightly more protein and fewer grams of sugar.
Everything, Everything You Need to Know About Nick Robinson
Image Source: Getty / Matthew Eisman
If you've seen the trailer for the adaptation of Nicola Yoon's Everything, Everything, than you've no doubt found yourself googling its star Nick Robinson. While the 22-year-old actor's charisma and looks are comparable to fellow YA star Ansel Elgort, there's another reason why he looks so familiar. In his short nine years of acting, he's actually been in a handful of well-known movies and shows. Since you'll probably be seeing his face everywhere after the film's release on May 19, we've gathered a few fun facts about him to jumpstart your newfound obsession.
1. He's From Washington
Nick was born in Seattle on March 22, 1995. At age 11, he made his professional acting debut in a local production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and eventually signed with The Savage Agency in LA two years later. Unfortunately, the Writers Guild of America strike was in full swing at the time, so he returned home with his family and continued acting in local theater productions.
2. He's the Oldest of Five
He describes his family as the modern-day Brady Bunch, with four younger siblings and two older half-siblings from his father's previous marriage.
3. He Played the Nephew of Two of Your Favorite Actresses
After participating in a few local Seattle productions, he eventually returned to LA to pursue acting. Even though it was only his second audition in LA, he managed to score a role as Melissa Joan Hart's nephew on ABC Family's Melissa & Joey. In 2015, he costarred with Ty Simpkins as brothers visiting their aunt (Bryce Dallas Howard) in Jurassic World.

4. This Isn't His First Book-to-Movie Adaptation
In January 2016, he starred alongside Chloë Grace Moretz in an adaptation of Rick Yancey's novel, The 5th Wave.
5. He's a Disney Channel Alum
While on hiatus from Melissa & Joey, Nick worked on the Disney Channel original movie Frenemies with Bella Thorne and Zendaya.
6. He Deferred NYU to Pursue Acting
After graduating from high school in 2013, Nick was admitted to NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Studies, which allows students to design their own interdisciplinary program to fit their specific interests. However, he deferred for a year so that he could continue working on Melissa & Joey.
7. He Plays an Unlikely Instrument
While doing a show called A Thousand Clowns in Seattle, he learned how to play the ukulele.
I Brought 2 Skincare Secrets Home From Japan - and They Transformed My Complexion
The rumors are true: Asia is a skincare paradise, and its women have flawless complexions. I was able to witness this IRL on a press trip to Okinawa with beauty brand SK-II. The company was hosting an event to discover Asia's next top beauty creator, and thus hundreds of influencers from across the continent had descended upon the Japanese island.
I don't think I saw a single blemish, wrinkle, or dry patch on a face other than my own throughout my visit, and I was obviously eager to learn the secret behind perfection. I met with Kazumi Toyama, Global SK-II senior manager, Technical Marketing & Scientific Communications, to unveil the defining differences between Asian and Western skincare regimens. According to her, there are only two distinctions - and they are so simple! - but they are essential for a youthful, glowing complexion.
You're removing your eye makeup wrong.
You've probably heard that ever since you were old enough to understand what eye cream was, it should be applied with caution to this delicate area. But while I've been daintily applying treatments with the pad of my ring finger, I've also been removing my eye makeup like a savage, leaving my skin streaked and slightly sore from rubbing. This is unacceptable behavior overseas.
Kazumi noted that heavier eye makeup is starting to increase in popularity in Asia, as smoky eyes and other Kardashian makeup is migrating there from the states. However, there's more education behind eye care there. "We're teaching them how to do the gentle removal," she said. "Because we know that this area really is the fastest to show signs of aging, we make sure that when we cleanse, it's very gentle."
That means no aggressive rubbing. Instead, simply soak a cotton pad with your favorite makeup remover, press it firmly to your closed eyelid, and hold it there for around 10 seconds. (This will allow the formula to dissolve your mascara, liner, shadow, and any other products.) Then, gently wipe off your makeup in one smooth motion. Repeat as necessary until the cotton pad comes away clean. Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Micro Makeup Remover Pads ($20) are designed for this exact method and are infused with a cleanser with a milky formula, the texture that Kazumi recommends for makeup removal.
Swap out your toner for facial essence.
The other minor skin switch? Put down your toner. For many American beauty junkies, this is the first slot in a skincare regimen postcleanse, but it's creating a stripped, parched canvas for the following products. "It's harsh and removes water rather than adds it," Kazumi said.
After Asian women wash their faces, they use an essence instead. This is not a generalization - according to Kazumi, approximately 95 percent of consumers overseas incorporate essences into their routines. "It's very specific to Asian skin care," she said.
Approximately 95 percent of consumers overseas incorporate essences into their routines.
As you've likely noticed, essences (also known as "clear lotions") have made their way into American skincare markets, but there is still a lot of confusion around these formulas. Essences basically function as a thin, watery serum that is meant to be patted into clean skin as the first step of any regimen. They're packed with high concentrations of powerful ingredients and infuse a complexion with deep hydration.
SK-II's Facial Treatment Essence ($179) contains more than 90 percent of Pitera, the brand's fermented, yeast-derived star ingredient, which hydrates, brightens, and gently exfoliates without stripping the skin. And, like most essences, it absorbs quickly and leaves no residue behind, making an ideal addition into even the laziest of regimens. However, don't use essence as a replacement for moisturizer (in other words, don't be too lazy). You should be following the application of this step with a hydrating cream like they do in Asia.
Seeing the precedence that was placed on proper skincare routines abroad, I gave my own a complete overhaul after returning home from Japan. I also incorporated both of these tricks into my regular regimen. I confess that I am still struggling to be patient when removing my eye makeup, but I am officially addicted to using an essence and don't go a day without using SK-II's. I have always been blessed with good skin, but now more than ever, I am receiving compliments on its luminosity and even tone. Discover more essence shopping recommendations here.

Baby Blue, Sheer Rainbow(!), and 10 More Nail Polish Shades to Wear This Spring
That time of year is finally here: the moment when we can peel off sweaty socks and boots in favor of breezy sandals. And that means that a fresh pedicure - and coordinating manicure, naturally - is long overdue.
Instead of sticking to standard reds, pinks, or beiges, you ought to consider one of the hottest hues we're seeing in this Spring's color palette. Baby blue is one of the most popular shades of the season, as are several takes on green and teal. However, if you're still obsessing over the unicorn beauty trend, there's plenty of magical iridescence to incorporate into your nail look, including a lacquer infused with real crystals and a top coat that adds an antiqued patina to any color.
Keep reading to see the shades you'll want to wear all season long.

Get Ready to Rock the Vote, Because Dwayne Johnson Might Run For President
Dwayne Johnson's giant muscles barely even fit on the cover of GQ's June issue, which hits newsstands nationwide on May 23. We thankfully get to see a lot of Dwayne's biceps, triceps, delts, lats, and so on and so forth in the photo shoot, but his quotes about a future in politics weirdly has us most excited. Dwayne has been asked quite a bit about his political aspirations since The Washington Post published an op-ed about his very viable candidacy for president in June 2016. After the piece came out, Dwayne shared it on Instagram and called it "fun to read," and "interesting," adding that the most important thing we needed from "our current and future leaders" was "strong honest leadership." This, of course, was before the presidential election - and it seems like Dwayne is more serious than ever about landing in the White House.
"A year ago, it started coming up more and more," he told GQ. "There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think, 'Let me really rethink my answer and make sure I am giving an answer that is truthful and also respectful.'" He added that he "didn't want to be flippant - 'We'll have three days off for a weekend! No taxes!'" When asked pointedly if he may one day "give up his life" as a handsomely paid movie star in order to run for office, he replied, "I think that it's a real possibility." So, who's ready to get in the voting booth?

This Student Wrote 127 Pages in Response to an Infuriating Catholic School Assignment
I go to a Catholic high school, and they wanted me to write a paper on why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous", so instead I wrote this 127 page paper. from lgbt
One Catholic high school student in Missouri is going viral for sharing the details of their shocking religion class assignment - along with the epic way they responded to it.
Reddit user averagesmurf recently shared the above photo, showing the cover of their latest morality class assignment. The student's teacher allegedly assigned the high school students to write a paper about why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous," but this teen had a little something different up their sleeve. Instead, they cranked out a whopping 127 pages about why gay marriage is actually "fabulous," backed up with Bible references and historical quotes.
The post garnered more than 900 comments from people who offered up both positive and negative reactions. Some praised the student's work, with one user saying, "Good job :) hope you got an A." Yet others were suspicious that the photo was a fluke, with another user writing, "This smells like bullsh*t to me, 127 pages is stupidly long and I doubt any school would assign an essay about the dangers of gay marriage."
So, the student shared a few snapshots of supposed pages from the assignment to prove its validity. The typed pages incorporate multiple Bible quotes and citations to support the student's argument that gay marriage should not be frowned upon by the Church.
On top of that, the student offered up an in-depth explanation of what the assignment entailed.
Though we may not know for sure whether this student's assignment was real, we sure hope it is, because it looks like some people in this world still need to broaden their viewpoint on this hot topic.

Simone Biles Has a Savage Comeback After Being Asked Why She's Not Smiling
Olympic gold medalist, Zac Efron enthusiast, and all-around superstar Simone Biles is currently crushing it on Dancing With the Stars, and after her second performance on Monday night's show, Simone made the horrible mistake of not smiling during her critiques. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba gave the 20-year-old some mixed reviews, after which host Tom Bergeron said, "I was waiting for you to smile at some of the compliments . . . you didn't." In a moment of sheer brilliance and feminist badassery, Simone shrugged and remarked, "Smiling doesn't win you gold medals." A QUEEN.
Simone later addressed her savage comment - which won her tons of support from fans on social media - telling ET, "I feel like everyone has their own opinion, clearly, and I feel it's just how you take it," adding, "I feel like I am trying, I am being honest, but if they don't see that, I don't know what more I can do." Simone is no stranger to clapping back at haters, but this really seems like a win for any woman who has been told to smile by a clueless guy.

33 Photos of Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos's Family That Will Replace Your Morning Coffee
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos may be big names in Hollywood (she has her own star on the Walk of Fame, after all), but when it comes to their personal life, they're just normal parents to their three gorgeous kids: Michael, 19, Lola, 15, and Joaquin, 14. Kelly and Mark, who eloped in Las Vegas in 1996, have never been shy about sharing glimpses of their family on social media over the years. Whether they're celebrating Christmas, bonding on family vacations, or visiting their parents at work, the Consuelos kids seem to have really good heads on their shoulders. And despite them growing up so fast (Michael recently went away to college), the family of five remains as tight as ever.
How to Wear Track Pants Right Now
The last time we wore Adidas track pants we were throwing them over gym shorts and pairing them with cleats for soccer practice. That was long before the athleisure trend came back in a big way last year. And while we've graduated from leggings and Yeezy trainers to roomy trousers, there are still so many fresh combinations to try.
This season, we're seeing ladies rock their gym pants with heels and undone blouses. They're slipping into full sets, and breaking up their look with a statement bag. And they're almost always adding a feminine touch in the form of jewelry: chunky chokers, geometric earrings, and fistfuls of rings included. Read on for a few different styling tricks we gathered from the street, then shop the essential piece that's comfortable (and now chic) enough to live in.
