13 Things to Know About Bernie Madoff Before Watching The Wizard of Lies

Nearly a decade after stockbroker Bernie Madoff's arrest for the largest known financial fraud in history, HBO has revived his story for the small screen. The Wizard of Lies stars Robert De Niro as Madoff (pictured above with costar Michelle Pfeiffer), and it examines the fallout from the Ponzi schemer's downfall and subsequent 150-year conviction. Whether you've yet to watch the movie or you just want to brush up on a few of the case's key facts, check out everything you need to know about the $65 billion scandal below.

  1. Madoff founded his company with money from a Summer job. Madoff, who was born in Queens in 1938, was a penny stock trader when he founded Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities in 1960 with $5,000 he earned from working as a lifeguard and sprinkler installer.
  2. He hired a ton of family members to work for him. Madoff's younger brother, Peter, was hired as senior managing director and chief compliance officer, and Peter's daughter, Shana Madoff, followed as compliance attorney. Madoff also had his sons, Mark and Andrew, and his nephew, Charles Weiner, working in the trading section. Both of his sons invested in their father's fund with their own money, although Mark stopped in 2001.
  3. The fraud allegedly began as far back as the 1970s. Although his Ponzi scheme wasn't fully revealed until 2008, some federal investigators suspect the fraud goes all the way back to the '70s. Madoff seemed to deny it when he admitted that his fraudulent activities didn't begin until sometime in the '90s.
  4. Madoff Securities had over $300 million in assets by 2000. The company quickly became one of the top traders and had offices in both NYC and London. This appearance of success is what helped keep Madoff's Ponzi scheme going for so long; an anonymous investor told The New York Times, "The returns were just amazing and we trusted this guy for decades - if you wanted to take money out, you always got your check in a few days. That's why we were all so stunned."
  5. Bernie Madoff and his wife, Ruth Madoff, had a close relationship with government members. Between the years of 1991 and 2008, the Madoffs contributed around $240,000 to federal candidates and committees, with 88 percent of that going to Democrats. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee later returned $100,000 of the contributions the Madoffs made, a move which was mirrored by Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Christopher J. Dodd (the latter of whom donated $1,500 to the Elie Wiesel Foundation For Humanity, since Wiesel was one of those defrauded by Madoff).
  6. He didn't confess until 2008. On Dec. 10, 2008, Madoff supposedly confessed to his employees that the part of the firm that dealt with asset management was actually a part of a massive, complex Ponzi scheme and had lost about $50 billion at that point. He was arrested the next day in his apartment on one count of securities fraud, but was released on $10 million bail.

  1. He plead guilty to 11 felony charges. After spending a few months on house arrest and reaching a partial agreement with the SEC (which froze his assets), he plead guilty to 11 federal crimes in March 2009, including money laundering, fraud, perjury, and false filings with the SEC. An appeals court ruled that he had to go to (and stay in) jail until sentencing.
  2. Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison. On June 29, 2009, Madoff paid for his crimes with a sentencing of 150 years in prison, which is actually the maximum amount of years allowed.
  3. His arrest and conviction had dire consequences for his family members. Ruth Madoff agreed to take $2.5 million in cash and forfeit her claim to their $85 million worth of assets in a settlement with federal prosecutors (she was later accused by Massachusetts regulators of withdrawing $15 million from a company account right before her husband confessed). A $199 million lawsuit was also filed against Madoff's sons, Mark and Andrew, as well as his brother Peter and niece Shauna, all of whom worked at the firm and were believed to be involved. Peter was later sentenced to 10 years in prison.
  4. His son killed himself. While his wife was out of town and his 2-year-old son was asleep, Mark, 46, hung himself in his NYC apartment. The suicide came exactly two years after his father's arrest on Dec. 11. Madoff's other son, Andrew, died in 2014 from lymphoma.
  5. Some of his victims were well-known celebrities. Director Steven Spielberg lost some of the money he put towards philanthropy, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel's nonprofit foundation lost a significant amount of its assets while being managed by Bernard Madoff Investment Securities. Other high-profile victims believed to have been defrauded include baseball player Sandy Koufax, New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon, Kevin Bacon and wife Kyra Sedgwick, John Malkovich, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
  6. He reportedly had a heart attack in prison. CNBC reported in 2014 that the convicted fraudster, then 75, was hospitalized for a heart attack at Duke University Medical Center (which is near the medium security federal prison he's locked up in in Butner, NC). He also claimed he had stage-four kidney disease, but wasn't receiving dialysis.
  7. A large amount of funds are still being recovered. In the end, a whopping 16,519 investors filed claims against Madoff. It was announced on Feb. 1, 2016, that more than $11 billion had been recovered. "We now have $11,079,000,000," trustee Irving Picard told ABC News, who leads the team of bankruptcy lawyers sorting out the financial disaster Madoff created. "We're hoping that we can collect another $3 to $4 billion so we could be in the $14 or $15 billion range."

You Guys, Octopus Buns Are SO In Right Now

As the sun is shining outside the POPSUGAR office and people are starting to clear out for their first Summer Friday, the edit team is still hard at work. But since we editors are always on top of the coolest trends, our eagerness to leave for the weekend does not stop us from having the latest viral hairstyle: the octopus bun.

The octopus bun is the perfect marriage of the millennial normcore aesthetic and creature-inspired beauty. Who wants to look like a magical, luminescent unicorn when they can look like a creepy-crawly, tentacled creature from the depths of the sea?

To achieve this high-fashion look, grab your stretched-out scrunchie or hair-tying apparatus. Proceed to form a ponytail on the top of your head, and the last time you put your pony through the loop, don't pull it all the way through. Let the ends hang out the front haphazardly. The result makes a hair mound with tentacles and the chicest bun you've ever seen.

This look works best when your hair is dirty, your makeup is fading away, and your friends are all hanging out without you at a rooftop bar for happy hour. Bonus points if they're already on their way to the Hamptons or another weekend destination.

Octopus buns have already become the favorite Summer hairstyle at the POPSUGAR office, and they will for you too . . . whether intentionally or not.

This Vintage Lake Wedding Is the Definition of Romantic

Whitney and Clint couldn't have exchanged vows in a more romantic setting. The couple held their vintage-inspired lake wedding in Arkansas, featuring a cliffside ceremony under a tree-hung chandelier overlooking the water. A candle-lit reception followed with beautiful vintage antiques and gorgeous florals. We love how they incorporated furniture to serve as both decor and practical pieces, like the dresser-turned-drink-station, for example. But our favorite highlight was how the bride's blush pink wedding gown matched the wedding colors perfectly!

See their lovely photos.

I Re-Created 4 of Kate Middleton's Looks - and, Yes, I Felt Like Royalty

When the idea of dressing up like Kate Middleton came up, I instantly jumped at the chance because a) the duchess's regal wardrobe could put anyone else's to shame, and b) her style is drastically different than mine. You see, I'm a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal, so the prospect of wearing knee-length dresses and long coats was very intriguing and possibly challenging. Unlike Kate, my outfits err on the rock 'n' roll side of the fashion spectrum and my everyday look usually consists of some combination of a bomber jacket, tee, jeans, and a pair of sneakers.

For some reason, I thought wearing these outfits might also somehow magically improve my posture and etiquette skills, but spoiler: I still slouched. (My mind instantly goes to that moment in The Princess Diaries when Mia Thermopolis learns how to wave like a queen.) While I didn't learn how to wave like a queen or walk any straighter, I did feel a whole lot chicer navigating the streets of New York in these outfits.

Since Kate is someone the fashion world pays quite a lot of attention to, I instantly knew which of her looks I wanted to re-create. From her famous baby blue polka-dot hospital dress to a classic structured coat, scroll on to see four ensembles I re-created to channel my inner Kate Middleton.

NBA Players Get Called Overweight Pineapple Heads in "Mean Tweets"

Jimmy Kimmel unleashed his latest round of "Mean Tweets" on Thursday night, and this time it's all about the NBA. Some of the biggest names in basketball, including James Harden, Magic Johnson, and Shaquille O'Neal, read some brutal tweets about themselves on social media. While some got teased about their appearance (one user said James Harden always looks like "he's just about to lead the Israelites through the Red Sea"), others were called out for their skills on the court. Of course, real-life teddy bear Shaquille O'Neal stole the spotlight with a seriously funny reaction to his burn.

Cristiano Ronaldo Is a Hottie With a Body We Can't Stop Staring At

Cristiano Ronaldo is a man who everyone loves to look at. Could it be because he has rock-hard abs that make us want to just stop and stare? Or the fact that he has some serious style? Either way, we can't help but enjoy watching the 32-year-old Portuguese soccer player on and off the field.

He recently became the first male athlete to reach 100 million followers on Instagram, and we're pretty sure his shirtless photos have something to do with that growing number of followers. Cristiano is a master at taking a good selfie, so trust and believe, you are going to enjoy scrolling through his sexiest Instagram photos ever.

A Stranger's Heartwarming Gesture Helped a Soldier Reunite With His Family on Memorial Day

Posted by Jennifer Streicher-Tilson on Thursday, December 8, 2016

Thanks to one stranger's random and quick act of kindness, an Army soldier was able to go home and see his family for Memorial Day. Josh Rainey bought a flight for Keaton Tilson, a US Army mechanic, and his family is extremely grateful for the heartwarming gesture.

Tilson, a 19-year-old soldier based in Fort Hood, Texas, received approval to go home for Memorial Day Weekend on May 25. However, he was trying to fly standby and couldn't get on a flight. That was until Josh Rainey saw the ordeal he was going through and tried to give Tilson his ticket from Dallas-Fort Worth International to St. Louis, Missouri. When that move didn't work either, Rainey simply bought him a ticket, reports KTVI. Tilson was moved by the gesture and couldn't believe it. "I'm very appreciative because if it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't be here right now," said Tilson to Good Morning America.

Rainey and Tilson were both emotional after the ticket exchange. "He walked away and came back and asked if he could hug me, and I think we both had to fight back the tears after that," said Rainey to KTVI. "It was pennies, pennies on the dollar compared to what I got back from that hug. But that hug was the biggest payment I received."

Jennifer Streicher-Tilson, the mother of Keaton, was also moved by the gesture. "Words can't even describe how grateful and surprised we were!" she said to POPSUGAR. She hopes Rainey's act serves as a positive message and reminder that we can always help someone out. "I know myself and other friends and family will be paying it forward. When we see someone in need, we will help as much as we are able to!" she said. Streicher-Tilson wrote a similar sentiment and shared it on her Facebook page on May 26.

Sometimes, especially in the world we live in today, I am amazed by the kindness of strangers! Keaton just got his...

5 Tips For Having the Palace of Versailles All to Yourself

From The Hall of Mirrors and the King's grand apartments, to the exquisite symmetric gardens and royal stables, there is no surprise why the Palace of Versailles is a must see when in Paris. However, just as any other main attraction, this famous chateau can become quite crowded, making anyone's visit less enjoyable.

Determined to steer clear of the tourist throng, I put my detective thinking cap on and got to work researching ways to bypass the crowds when it came to this French landmark. After spending a good chunk of time online investigating, I was able to time our visit to Versailles just right so that my husband and I practically had the grounds to ourselves. We joked with our friends we had rented out the palace, because for a while there was not a single soul around!

If visiting Versailles is anywhere in your near future or on your bucket list, listen up. I'm here to share the five tips - all of which are surprisingly simple - I uncovered so you can plan accordingly and maximize your time at this one-of-a-kind estate. Let's get started!

Here Are 5 Science-Back Fixes For Your Waning Will Power

It's no surprise that the majority of dieters blame a lack of self-control on their failure to reach their feel-great weight. However, if you believe that you've inherited the low willpower gene, think again. In fact, willpower can actually be strengthened with proper training - just like lifting weights can pump up your muscles. And knowing the right exercises for your brain is the key to replenishing this resource.

Ready for the willpower workout? Below are five research-based mental practices that will help improve decision making, conquer cravings, and keep your diet on track.

Eat the Right Carbs

Self-control is in lock step with your blood sugar. Research from Florida State University reported that when blood sugar levels plummet, you lose your ability to resist temptation. In order to keep blood sugars in check, eat slow-to-digest (or low-glycemic) carbs such as fruit, veggies, beans, and whole grains. And keep this tip in mind the next time you decide to indulge on a piece of cake during the impromptu office party: refrain from eating sweets on an empty stomach - this will only result in a quick spike in sugar levels, followed by the dreaded sugar crash.

Out of Sight, Out of Mouth

One of the best ways to keep your ironclad willpower from turning to tin is to steer clear of your downfall foods - meaning your personal "trigger" foods, as well as those universal problematic foods that contain the can't-resist combo of sugar, fat, and salt: French fries, salty snacks, baked goods, ice cream, pizza, and chocolate. Even just being in the presence of these classic comfort food favorites can suck up your self-control. Yet avoiding eye contact will encourage you to stay focused.

Limit Food Media

Studies indicate that watching food advertisements can light up certain areas of our brain, which in turn, heighten our cravings. Also, similar research states the same reaction takes place in our brain when we watch cooking shows (sorry, Rachael Ray!) or spend time scrolling through drool-worthy food images and recipes on Instagram, Pinterest, or Facebook. So in other words, stop with the #foodporn.

Plan Ahead

Here's a little food for thought: researchers at Cornell University reveal that we are faced with about 220 food-related decisions every day, so the more of those choices that are left to chance (Which cereal should I buy? Do I want a turkey sandwich or salad for lunch?), the quicker you'll deplete your daily willpower - and the more likely you are to overeat. Put an end to the on-the-spot picks and plan your meals a day (or even two!) in advance. And always shop with a grocery list - this simple strategy will help limit the number of times you need to tap into your willpower.

Get Enough Shut-Eye

Lack of sleep - whether it's due to interrupted sleep, a sleep disorder, or just being a night owl - is a willpower wrecker. Studies consistently show that slumber-deprived subjects, which is generally less than seven to eight hours a night for most adults, consume more calories, have increased cravings for junk food (like sweet, salty, or high-fat treats), and are more likely to be overweight or obese. When you disrupt your sleep, you disrupt your strength.

What Is HIIT?

It's time to HIIT it! Rising slowing in popularity for a while, HIIT workouts first made the American College of Sports Medicine's list of fitness trends back in 2014, and they are still going strong. If you haven't jumped on the HIIT bandwagon yet, here's what you need to know.

What Is HIIT?

The accurately poetic acronym HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training. A HIIT workout mixes shorts bursts of activity with even shorter rest periods. Ideally, you work to your maximum capacity during the short bursts of activity, hence the use of "high intensity" to describe those intervals. Because you are pushing your limits, these workouts tend be shorter, rarely passing the 30-minute mark.

HIIT workouts are scalable to any fitness level, making it a popular format for group fitness classes. Your goal is push yourself to 90 percent of your personal max in the intense intervals, and this varies among individuals. Using the rate of perceived exertion scale to measure your efforts helps keep the workout individualized.

You can do a HIIT workout with almost any type of activity, including running, swimming, and cycling, as well as strength training with exercises like burpees, squats, and push-ups. HIIT is flexible and you can create different formulas for the work-to-rest ratio, but the most popular is 2:1. For example, you work for 40 seconds at your max and rest for 20, repeating this pattern for five to 10 sets. The Tabata Protocol might be the most well-known HIIT workout. Its eight rounds of 20-second intervals followed by 10 seconds of rest make it one of the hardest four-minute workouts you've ever done.

The Benefits

  • HIIT workouts are efficient; since you're working to your max, you burn more calories in less time.
  • Adding intervals into your workouts helps you burn more fat during your sweat session.
  • Interval workouts, compared to steady-paced ones, have a higher afterburn effect, meaning you continue to burn calories after your workout is over for a longer period of time.
  • HIIT workouts also increase your endurance. So when you do go for a long, steady-paced run, you can go further.
  • Health-wise, intervals improve your cardiovascular health, cholesterol profile, and insulin sensitivity (which helps fight type 2 diabetes).

HIIT Workouts to Try

Here are some of our favorite HIIT workouts:

Since HIIT workouts are so vigorous, it's best to do no more than two a week and avoid doing back-to-back HIIT workouts. You need to give your body time to recover to truly reap the benefits of these workouts so you can go hard at your next sweat sesh.

So This Is Why Prince William Calls Kate Middleton "Catherine"

Kate Middleton has been in the spotlight ever since she began dating Prince William back in 2003. While she typically goes by the title the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate is also known as Princess William of Wales or simply Kate Middleton. But why is it that William calls her Catherine, you ask? Well, for starers, Kate was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton. While growing up in the English village of Bucklebury, she was known as Catherine among her friends and family, and it wasn't until she went to St. Andrews University that she garnered the nickname "Kate."

Kate married William in 2011 and that's when she officially became Catherine Elizabeth, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, as listed on Prince George's birth certificate. Just like William, the palace also refers to Kate as Catherine. During an interview with BBC's Radio 1 in April, Scott Mills questioned the fact that Prince Harry referred to his sister-in-law as "Cath" in a recent video, asking, "Everyone calls you Kate, don't they?" "I will answer to most things," she replied. Well, there you have it.

Serena Williams Turned Her Zara Kimono Into a Maternity Robe - and We Love It

While Serena Williams cheered on her sister Venus at the French Open, we checked out Serena's maternity outfit. The mom to be stood out in the sidelines by wearing a bright Zara floral kimono. The Summery outerwear featured an open v-neckline and sash, which tied snugly over her growing baby bump. Though the star wore her kimono over a black dress, we can easily imagine it styled with a white crop top and jeans. The exact Zara piece is currently sold out, but we found some similar versions below to shop.

Golden Freckle Temporary Tattoos Will Complete Your Festival Look

While glitter freckles have been a popular Instagram beauty trend for a while, this new version makes it easier than ever to get festival-ready.

In the past, sporting this look involved spreading Vaseline across your face and patting glitter or shimmer on top of the jelly to adhere to your face. Not only is this a little impractical, but it can be uncomfortable to wear during warm weather.

The latest version smartly combines your childhood favorite temporary tattoos with this fun trend. The metallic tattoos work just like the ones you remember, but look way chicer.

To achieve your luminous freckled face, simply cut out the portion of the design you want from the tattoo sheet and remove the plastic. Next, place the design on your face and wet the back of it with a paper towel or sponge. After 30 seconds, you can remove the sponge and paper, revealing some magically metallic freckles.

When you'd like to return to your less-sparkly self, removing these dots is as simple as rubbing on makeup remover or baby oil and wiping them away. We can't wait to try out this trend at our next musical festival or Summer outing where we're sure to shine.

Read on to see where to pick up these cool freckle tattoos.

Here's a List of Businesses to Boycott - or Support - If You Oppose Trump

Donald Trump's controversial views have led several businesses to take a clear stance for or against him. If you're looking for a list of these businesses to help inform your consumer decisions, we're here to help.

Who's Against Trump?

From the moment he announced his presidential campaign, Donald Trump created enough controversy that some businesses cut ties with him. Macy's stopped selling Trump's line of menswear after he declared most Mexican immigrants were rapists and murderers, and stood by their decision even after the election. NBC also cut ties with him, canceling their broadcast of the Miss USA pageant, which Trump owned, and replacing him as the host of Celebrity Apprentice.

Designers like Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Sophie Theallet have also made clear their disapproval of the president by refusing to dress the future first lady, Melania Trump. Additionally, an large list of artists rejected invitations to perform at the presidential inauguration on Jan. 20. The list includes Elton John, Garth Brooks, Gene Simmons, Andrea Bocelli, Charlotte Church, and Jennifer Holliday.

Who Supports Trump, and How?

Of course, some businesses have expressed their support of Trump. One recently publicized case was that of L.L.Bean, which Trump praised in a tweet before he took office, thanking Linda Bean, heiress to the company, for her support. He also urged his supporters to buy the brand's products. (As president, he is now prohibited from endorsing specific brands by the Office of Government Ethics.) The tweet was issued in response to a $30,000 donation Bean made in support of Trump, which was recently revealed to have exceeded the annual limit for individuals.

An online group, Grab Your Wallet, has compiled a list of businesses that consumers who oppose Trump could consider boycotting. These businesses fall into two categories. The first includes companies who have not necessarily openly expressed support for Trump, but who continue to carry either his brand's products or those manufactured for his daughter Ivanka Trump's brand. This category includes large companies like Amazon, even though its CEO, Jeff Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, has been harshly criticized, and even threatened, by Trump. Macy's, despite having stopped selling Trump's clothing line, is also on the list, because the retailer continues to sell Ivanka's products. Other big names currently on the list include Bed Bath & Beyond, Bloomingdale's, Sears, Walmart, Saks Off Fifth, Winners, Kmart, and Lord & Taylor.

The second category includes companies who have supported Trump more directly, whether through public endorsements, donations, or advertising. For example, Steve Forbes, the chairman of Forbes Media, has publicly endorsed Trump, as have Hobby Lobby CEO David Green, Yuengling Beer owner Dick Yuengling Jr., and NASCAR CEO Brian France. Others have actively raised funds for or donated to the Trump campaign, such as New Balance chairman Jim Davis, who reportedly donated nearly $400,000, and of course, Linda Bean.

The website also points out companies who are advertisers on NBC's The New Celebrity Apprentice, of which Donald Trump remains executive producer. This category includes Tyra Banks's beauty line Tyra Beauty, the juice company Welch's, and Trident gum.

Finally, the website mentions a list of businesses for which a boycott case could be made, but which Grab Your Wallet has decided to exempt for various reasons. For example, PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel has actively supported Trump, but because Thiel is no longer involved with the company, PayPal is not on the boycott list. The Washington Post is also spared, despite being owned by Jeff Bezos (see above), because of the importance of maintaining free press and capable journalism under President Trump.

The Washington Post is also spared, despite being owned by Jeff Bezos (see above), because of the importance of maintaining free press and capable journalism under President Trump.

The Irony of Ivanka Trump Expressing Support For the LGBTQ Community

On June 1, Ivanka Trump celebrated the start of Pride Month by expressing her support for the LGBTQ community on her Twitter account. "Logging back on after Shavuot, wishing everyone a joyful #Pride2017. This month we celebrate and honor the #LGBTQ community," Trump tweeted.

Shortly after, Trump also shared how "proud" she is to support her LGBTQ friends who have "made immense contributions to our society and economy."

The internet quickly called out the irony of President Donald Trump's eldest daughter declaring herself a supporter of the community when her father's administration doesn't seem to be. Read on to see some poignant reactions to Trump's tweets ahead.

Witness the Exact Moment a Mom's Dying Wish Was Fulfilled at Her Daughter's Wedding

St. Mary's Hospital recently granted one woman's dying wish by organizing a special garden wedding ceremony so that she could witness her daughter get married. Debbie Nelson from Madison, WI, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and told the local news station that she arrived at the hospital feeling "very sick, but knowing that I had one goal. And that is to see my daughter get married."

Debbie said she "never expected" the surprise wedding to happen as quickly as it did. All it took was 24 hours for the staff and volunteers to transform the hospital's healing garden into a gorgeous wedding venue for her daughter, Melissa.

"Unbelievably happy and thankful for everything that everybody did in one day. I'm just kind of blown away," Melissa said after tying the knot with her husband. "People came from everywhere and offered to help and made this, like, one of the best days of my entire life," Debbie added. Watch the emotional video above to witness the beautiful moment Debbie got to see her wish come true.

Chris Cornell's Brother Shares Photos of the First and Last Times They Were Ever Together

Chris Cornell's death was a tragic shock to many, from close pal Brad Pitt to his brother, Peter. The latter opened up about how devastating the past few weeks have been on Facebook, sharing a pair of photos of the first time he and Chris were ever together (just after Peter was born), as well as the last. "It's been difficult to put words together," Peter captioned the pictures. "My heart is broken. Chris was always just my brother. We just 'were.' No pretense. No dog and pony show. We didn't have to get deep all the time. Sometimes we only needed to just be in the same room and just be present. That was enough."

The Soundgarden frontman, 52, was found unresponsive with a band around his neck in the bathroom of his hotel room at the MGM Grand in Detroit, and his death was later ruled a suicide. His wife, Vicky, opened up about what a great family man he was soon afterwards, saying, "Chris's death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband. He was my best friend. His world revolved around his family first and of course, his music, second."

Peter echoed Vicky's words in the rest of his post, noting the importance of music in his brother's life. "It wasn't until this week, it really hit me how he belonged to the world. That he is an icon and a legend," he said. "Chris protected us when we needed him to. His one of a kind-ness surrounded us like a suit of armor. He was a warrior and a wizard. A howling wolf and a trusted mentor . . . I will never wrap my head around his passing. I've been in shock since I heard the news. I can't and won't let him go." Read Peter's message in full above.

This Hidden Beach in Mexico Is Difficult to Reach but Totally Worth the Trip

Puerto Vallarta's bucket-list-worthy gem goes by several names, including Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach) and Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach). Whatever you call it, you're not incorrect - because it fits all of those descriptions: fully hidden and romantic. As part of the Marieta Islands at Banderas Bay, Mexico, Hidden Beach looks like a hole in the earth that's completely invisible from the outside, unless you're viewing it aerially.

Islas Marietas National Park is a group of small, uninhabited islands formed by underwater volcanic eruptions. It is recognized by UNESCO as a protected biosphere reserve and has therefore been increasingly more difficult to get to over recent years. Though it is "hidden," it's definitely not a secret, as it's become a popular tourist site. The open cavern is home to marine wildlife and bird colonies, so the only activities allowed are swimming, kayaking, and sunbathing. The only way to get to Hidden Beach is via a water tunnel that connects to the Pacific Ocean. Your options of getting through are swimming or kayaking, since you're limited to six feet of space above the water.

Though the archipelago originated from volcanic activity, it's said that the hole was a result of military bombs tested by the Mexican government. Scientist Jacques Cousteau protested against harmful activity in the '60s, and the beach was eventually recognized as a national park in 2005. After seeing these photos, you'll understand all the efforts to preserve it. Check them out!

Carrie Underwood Likes to HIIT It With Tabata Workouts

Carrie Underwood takes multihyphenate to a new level. Not only is she a country music superstar and creator of Calia by Carrie Underwood, but she is also, in her own words, "Your busy mom, friend, and wife, just trying to fit it all in." We sat down with Carrie to find how she stays so fit as a busy mom.

POPSUGAR: What exercises do you squeeze in on your busiest day?

Carrie Underwood: If I have 30 minutes, either I'm going to go for a run or do a few rounds of Tabata. That's my go-to if it's a quick something or other.

PS: What moves do you love for Tabata?

CU: The basics like squats, curls, push-ups, shoulder presses. It doesn't have to be anything fancy - if you have a set of weights, you can do a whole lot with Tabata.

PS: What are your favorite songs for working out?

CU: Anything loud and hard rock. I like listening to kind of angry music when I work out.

PS: What do you say to yourself to stay positive in difficult situations or to take on a new challenge?

CU: I feel like my life right now is so crazy; there's no time to dwell on difficult things. You just have to figure out how to fix it or get past it because there is no time to do anything else. Being a mom to a toddler, my career, and my husband's career - all of our worlds just kind of colliding at once, you just make it work.

PS: Do you find you've become more positive since you've had a child since you don't have time to dwell on the small things?

CU: I feel like I've become a better problem-solver, because again, you just have to! I have to be positive for him for sure, but it's not even about thinking about it. It's just how to make this work, and it can get pretty nutty, but it's fun too!

PS: Part of Calia is "stay the path." What is your advice for sticking to and setting goals?

CU: Figure out what you want, how you want to feel, whatever your motivation is, you have to figure it out. That's step one: where do you want to be? The next thing is just trying to get there and cutting yourself some slack along the way. You're going to have days when you veer off your path, then just get right back on. We all have cheat days, holidays, or celebrations, whatever or period when we can't work out as much as we like, and just do the best you can and when you can get back on track, get back on track.

Vatican Says Relying on Fossil Fuels Is as Ridiculous as Believing Earth Is Flat

President Donald Trump has decided to screw the planet and rescind America's ratification of the Paris Agreement. This is bad for everyone. Scientists and activists are irate, but the Vatican is by far the most powerful opponent of Trump's decision (the pope does lead roughly a billion people, after all). Reuters reports that the head of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, had some strong words for the president (preceding his official announcement that he would actually withdraw).

"If he really does (pull out), it would be a huge slap in the face for us," Sorondo told the Roman newspaper La Repubblica and later confirmed his comments with Reuters. "It will be a disaster for everyone."

We know it's not exactly in the Vatican's nature to so explicitly target or name Trump, but the bishop was clear about the church's position. "[Withdrawing] would not only be a disaster but completely unscientific. Saying that we need to rely on coal and oil is like saying that the earth is not round," Sorondo said. "It is an absurdity dictated by the need to make money."

The bishop does have a point: Trump's cabinet is stacked with former oil executives and politicians whose coffers have long been lined with fossil fuel industry donations. But even some of those oil allies encouraged Trump to remain in the landmark treaty; Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former Exxon CEO, pressed the president to ratify the agreement to curtail carbon emissions. But to no avail.

Make the planet great again? Nah. But we really shouldn't be that surprised considering the president once tweeted climate change was a hoax engineered by China to outperform the United States economically. Perversely, China is actually capitalizing on climate change and outpacing America on another metric: investment in renewable energy. In January, China's state energy agency announced its plans to invest $361 billion in solar by 2020 and create more than 13 million jobs in the industry.

5 Ways I Styled My Awkwardly Long Bangs to Survive the Growing-Out Stage

In the dead of Winter, getting bangs seemed like an amazing idea. I was completely hell-bent on having Alexa Chung's effortlessly wavy fringe, so much so that I convinced myself the look would be easy enough to manage year-round. Ignoring my stylist's gentle warnings about the difficulties of dealing with wavy-textured bangs in humidity and the extra time styling them would require, I told her I had everything under control. It was a pretty stupid bold declaration, considering I rarely sacrificed sleep in the name of giving myself extra time to get ready.

After the initial chop, I was so thrilled with my new 'do that I actually didn't mind the extra time I had to spend on my hair in the mornings. What was a couple fewer minutes of sleep if the end result was looking a little more like Alexa Chung? I vowed to do whatever upkeep was necessary to keep my bangs going all year-round.

But by the second month of living with my new fringe, I started to question if this would really be as simple to style once cooler, dryer weather passed. Maybe my hairstylist (you know, the highly trained individual who is a licensed expert in all things hair-related) had been right to warn me against getting these bangs. Visions of my fairly easy, eyebrow-grazing fringe from Winter turning into a damp curtain of frizz that stuck to my sweaty forehead in Summer scared the sh*t out of me. It was decided: I had to get a move on growing these bangs back out before Summer's sweltering heat was in full swing.

Starting the process of growing my bangs out was painful, to put it lightly. At first, I had no idea how to conceal these odd-lengthed hairs without reaching for a baseball hat every day. But with time (and plenty of bobby pins, headbands, and hair oil), I've finally figured out a number of looks that both hide my growing fringe and feel like my style. Ahead, check out five of those hairstyles I've relied on to pull me through the dreaded growing-out stage. (And if you ever hear me talk about getting bangs again, by all means, tell me to stop talking.)

You'll Fall in Love With Goldie Hawn Again When You See Her as a Grandma

We all wish we could be a part of Goldie Hawn's big, happy family. In addition to sharing countless pictures with longtime partner Kurt Russell and their kids on social media, the legendary actress also has five adorable grandchildren. Whether she's goofing off with Kate's two boys, Ryder and Bingham, or she's getting on her hands and knees to help Oliver's kids, Wilder, Bodhi, and Rio, find an Easter egg, we never get tired of seeing her in grandma mode. Catch the sweetest glimpses of her littlest ones here.

We Are Getting "Down" to Fifth Harmony's First Single Without Camila Cabello

Fifth Harmony is here to own the Summer with their new single "Down," featuring Gucci Mane. This new catchy tune is Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke Hernandez, Dinah Jane, and Normani Kordei's first song without Camila Cabello, who left the group in late 2016 and is now promoting her own solo music. It didn't disappoint! The banger has a very similar upbeat tempo to 5H's previous hit "Work From Home", so that should be a sign that it'll be playing in clubs around the world all Summer long.

The ladies performed the hit for the first time on Good Morning America, looking super sexy in coordinated outfits with denim jackets and black shirts. Watch it all go down (literally) in the video above.

There's something so darling about a child in a fashionable outfit - whether it be a trend in the adult fashion world or something that only a little one could pull off - that makes it hard to give adults the gold for best dressed.

Scroll through for 45 photos of fashionable kids that prove they are better dressed than adults.

This New Victoria's Secret Model Just Might Rival Gigi Hadid

If you need a quick rundown on the one model to keep your eye on in 2017, meet Grace Elizabeth. The 19-year-old was named the new face of Victoria's Secret Pink, joining fellow model Zuri Tibby, after walking in the 2016 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Grace also just landed her first Carolina Herrera Spring '17 campaign alongside supermodel Lily Aldridge. As if this doesn't give her enough fashion cred, her résumé includes walking in shows like Moschino, Erdem, Jeremy Scott, Tory Burch, and the list goes on. Though she's been in the business for awhile, we're thinking this might be her year to steal the spotlight. So, read up on Grace and keep watch for her fashion domination.
