The Heartbreaking Way This Teacher Discovered 5 Students' Biggest Secrets

When Elle Deal decided to try a new exercise with her fifth grade students, the Friday activity turned into something incredibly heartbreaking.

The elementary school teacher asked her kids to write a short blurb, titled, "I wish my teacher would know . . . " and their answers left a major impact on her. Elle shared a few of the heartbreaking (and anonymous) statements on Facebook as a reminder to everyone to "leave this life a little better than how we found it."

"Kid 1: I wish my teacher would know, my dad is in jail and I haven't seen him in years.
Kid 2: I wish my teacher would know, I don't always eat dinner because my mom works and I don't know how to work the stove.
Kid 3: I wish my teacher would know, my sister sleeps in the same bed as me and sometimes she wets the bed and that's why I smell funny.
Kid 4: I wish my teacher would know that I don't always have sneakers for gym class because my brothers and I share one pair.
Kid 5: I wish my teacher would know I like coming to school because it's quiet here, not like my house with all the yelling."

This simple activity reinforced Elle's desire to spend her life hopefully making a difference for others. "We spend so much time talking and judging what we think we know . . . we need to ask more questions and spend more time listening," she wrote. "We also need to shift our mindset and see things from other people's perspective, give more than we get, and live to serve."

How 1 Police Officer Brought Extra Love to Kids at the Manchester Benefit Concert

There was a heightened sense of community and resilience that filled the crowd during Ariana Grande's One Love Manchester benefit concert. However, nothing captured this feeling more than footage of an unassuming police officer skipping with a few kids in the crowd.

The uniformed officer held hands with a group of kids as they danced in circles among the fans who gathered to show support for the 22 killed and over 100 injured in the terrorist attack during Grande's previous concert. A variety of performers, including Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, and Miley Cyrus, joined Grande during the event. However, it was footage of this man joyously dancing with the young fans during Justin Bieber's performance that's warming hearts across the internet as a symbol of hope during this somber time.

Lauren Conrad Says Goodbye to This Pacific Palisades Mansion - Bye, Epic Waterslide

You might remember Lauren Conrad from her glory days on Laguna Beach, but this California girl has come a long way since then, and her most recent real estate sale can attest to that. Lauren and her husband William Tell recently sold their Pacific Palisades, CA, mansion for $5 million. The couple purchased the home back in 2015 for $4.4 million, but it looks like Lauren revamped the 5,871-square-foot Spanish mansion with some of her impressive interior decorating skills.

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom home has been updated with a strikingly beautiful white paint job, giving the home the open, beachy feel we'd expect LC to create. If the massive master bathroom wasn't enough to convince the new buyers, maybe it was the circular dressing room with French doors that open up to a balcony. Keller Williams' Linda Ferrari and Main Beach Realty's Cary Glenn were responsible for the listing, which also boasted the swimming pool and waterslide.

The two are expecting their first child together, and we have a feeling that the baby is going to be mad his or her parents gave up such an epic waterslide. Keep reading to see photos of the beautiful Pacific Palisades mansion, and let Lauren's style inspire your own interior design.

If Kendall Jenner's New Accessory Trick Isn't an Obsession, What Is?

Considering Kendall Jenner's big love for all trends '80s, we're not surprised she's devoted to wearing a fanny pack. It's an easy little pouch Kendall can affix to her waist, then go hands-free while shopping with Gigi Hadid or running errands. Kendall's choice of designs are neutrals - including a quilted Chanel mini and a monogrammed Louis Vuitton silhouette - making them easy to mix and match with all her clothes.

With this accessory style move, Kendall walks around the city appearing effortless and light, avoiding the weighty conundrum that comes with being a "bag lady." Scroll for a glimpse at the many different outfits Kendall's completed with a fanny pack (sometimes she chooses to secure one around the shoulder), then shop similar options that will help you nail the look this season.

11 Books Written by or About Refugees to Add to Your Summer Reading List

While politicians continue to debate helping refugees while simultaneously refusing to allow them to resettle in the countries they lead, some 65 million people suffer worldwide.

The crisis in Syria has accentuated what harrowing circumstances refugees face, but it's not just happening there: people escaping war, famine, and extreme poverty across the Middle East have sought asylum across Europe in recent years.

Too often the plight of refugees is politicized, as is the case now, but one way to combat misrepresentations of refugees is simply by reading their stories. We asked Amazon book editor Sarah Smith to recommend a few books both about refugees and by refugees to enlighten readers of their stories. Ahead are her choices of poetry, short stories, and novels with a brief description about each selection.

How the Women of Country Music Inspired My Journey Into Drag

Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova's talk show, UNNHhh, runs on World of Wonder's WOWPresents YouTube channel. Trixie's debut album, Two Birds, is available now.

I'm from a really, really small village in the deep Northwoods of Wisconsin. No neighbors for miles around. I was very close to my grandparents. My grandfather was a lifelong country musician, so I grew up playing guitar and singing folk music with him. Long before I was a drag queen, I was interested in singing folk music. My hometown was so tiny and so remote that when I was younger, I didn't even know what a drag queen was. But I did have a lesbian aunt.

She was the first one to tell me about Pride. I was maybe 15, and she knew I was gay as hell. She was like, "Oh, we'll have to get you to down to Milwaukee. Come down for Pride Festival." She would tell me what musicians were set to play, and that first time we saw Joan Jett, who I really loved. Joan Jett is just such a great, great songwriter. I remember standing there in this big audience. I was just this 15-year-old in this sea of lesbians and their children.

There's Joan Jett: 60 years old, paper-white skin, wearing leather pants and a corset, and playing this big, black electric guitar. She's singing "Crimson and Clover," and this whole choir of lesbians around me is singing. Before I related to the gay community in any way, I related to being a musician. Being so close to my lesbian aunt, standing there and hearing a choir of aggressively lesbian women singing beautiful Joan Jett music, I felt so included in just this little bubble. And I'll never hear Joan Jett music without thinking of that experience.

Before I related to the gay community in any way, I related to being a musician.
Obviously, I'm from a very conservative area. I didn't know where I was going to fit in the world of musicians because I was definitely a homo. Which is funny now, because I love country music, and if you know your country music history, those women were in f*cking drag. Grand Ole Opry? Loretta Lynn and June Carter Cash and Dolly Parton? Back in the day for a woman in country music, the only way you could launch a career was if you were an accessory in a successful male country star's show. Your job was basically to be gorgeous, sing a little, and tell jokes. You know, be the sexy comedic relief. I mean, tell me that's not what a drag queen does.

I didn't really get into drag for another couple of years after that fateful first Pride with Joan Jett. I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show when I was 17, before I went out to college, and I really loved the music in it. Growing up, I loved people who were drag queens without knowing they were drag queens. I loved Peg Bundy. I loved Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors. I loved Dolly Parton. People that were in drag without me really realizing that they were in drag.

I went to college and I started performing in a Rocky Horror show, a shadow casting at the movie theater. As a little gay guy from the country, it was a great way to be weird in the cover of darkness and not worry about being identified as weird. Because, well, you're in a room full of weirdos. I played the part of Trixie, the usherette in the beginning. That's actually part of how I ended up with that drag name. It was actually kind of serendipitous; that's what my stepdad used to call me when he was telling me I was too feminine or too sensitive. He would call me a Trixie. I used to hate that word. And then when I ended up in Rocky and my character's name was Trixie, it worked out. I took back the night.

For a while, I used to take the $9 Greyhound to Chicago. It was an hour away from Milwaukee. I'd do the drag shows on the weekend with Kimchi and Shea Couleé and Pearl. Then, I got RuPaul's Drag Race. I always say Drag Race takes your life from black and white to IMAX. After that, two years ago, I moved to LA to keep up that momentum.

There's so much healing power in laughter.
Now, I find that the more true I am to myself, in my comedy, in my music, the more I can just be more real with how I feel and turn that into laughter. There's so much healing power in laughter. In my comedy show, I address suicide, depression, breakups, STDs - there's really not a show that paints me as a winner. But people tell me all the time, they're like, "Oh my God, I've been having some really dark moments, I just needed to laugh." Of course, I don't create content because I want to be a social justice warrior. But if it affects people in a positive way, I'm like, "Oh my God, I'm doing something important with my life."

I used to be kind of ashamed of dragging. It used to be something I knew I was good at, but I was mad that I was good at it. I was like, "Ugh, why can't I be good at long division or something a little more normal?" It's changed for me over the years because a lot of people think of drag as "my character," "my other persona." For me, I never felt that way. The more I realize it's just me dressed up, I don't have an issue with it. It's like my favorite thing about what I can do. And, this is kind of morbid, but I'm probably never going to get the chance to have kids, and when I die, I will have left something behind. I will have impacted this art form as a whole forever. So I have done something with my life. I have a legacy. And that's something I don't have to be ashamed of anymore.

7 Life-Saving Home Safety Tips Everyone Who Lives Alone Needs to Read

Moving out on your own is a big step. Leaving the comfort of a shared apartment, college dorm, or parent's house to live in an apartment all alone can be as scary as it is exhilarating. Along with all the independence that comes from renting (or buying) solo comes the full responsibility of watching out for your own safety - no roomies or mom to make sure you're home OK or lock the door behind you!

To learn how to stay safe when striking out on your own, we spoke with expert David Laubner of Blink Home Security. Check out his pro tips below - they might just save your life.

Change the locks as soon as you move in.

"Ensuring you know who has access to copies of your keys should be the first question to the landlord," David says. He warns that not all landlords do their due diligence to update the locks when a tenant moves out, so it's a smart idea to change them yourself upon moving in.

Make friends with your neighbors.

"People are 77 percent more likely to help a neighbor they know. It also allows your neighbors to be aware of what you look like so if they see someone knocking or going into your apartment that isn't you, they will know when to help or be more attentive."

Install an entrance door security camera.

David says it's essential to have some form of security in an apartment while you're not there monitoring your front door. "Having a security camera will give you that peace of mind. They don't have to be expensive, either; our indoor cameras start at just $99."

Use window stoppers.

"Windows are great to get fresh air, but they are one of the easiest access points in an apartment," David warns. "By simply putting a wooden pole in between where the two windows meet, you can block access for burglars." He also advises adding extra protection to any windows that could be accessed by climbing a tree. A simple window alarm is a good place to start.

View the room as if you are looking in from the street.

"Make sure to evaluate the rooms of the apartment as if you are looking through the window because burglars or thieves have the ability to look before entering," David says. To keep them from getting a good look at your apartment from the outside, he advises drawing the shades before leaving when possible or, for a more permanent solution, coating on the window so no one can peek in.

Get a door peep hole.

"One of the most common areas burglars and thieves enter is through is still the front door," says David. "They tend to knock first to ensure no one is home, so be sure you have something to prepare for any intruders who come to the door. It also allows you be better informed for anyone knocking at your door."

Download a personal security app.

David's final tip for solo dwellers: get a personal security app. "Whether you're headed out to meet girlfriends or simply walking from your apartment to your car, downloading a personal security app, such as bSafe, is a smart move for any woman who lives alone. This allows you to invite your friends to virtually walk you home and will even notify them when you've arrived at your destination."

Wonder Woman Is an Important Step Forward For the DC Universe - and Women Everywhere

She couldn't have been more than 7, maybe 8 years old. She bounced into the movie theater to see Wonder Woman rather than walked, excitedly hopping from one foot to another as her dad followed close behind. She wore a homemade costume, complete with a glittering gold crown, a baby blanket tied around her neck as an impromptu cape, and some wrist wraps made out of tinfoil. Smiling from ear to ear, she sat down a few rows in front of me, and I couldn't get her face out of my mind for the film's entire run, which clocks in at a lengthy but enjoyable two hours and change.

Yes, director Patty Jenkins's take on the beloved female superhero has finally arrived, and praise Hippolyta, it's fantastic.

Over the last few years, Warner Bros.' attempts to bring DC Comics characters to the big screen haven't exactly gone well, critically speaking. After Christopher Nolan's stellar run with his Dark Knight trilogy in the early aughts, Zack Snyder's joyless Man of Steel fell flat in 2013. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (also directed by Snyder) and David Ayer's Suicide Squad came along three years later, and though they raked in some serious cash for Warner Bros. - Batman v Superman earned an astounding $873 million, while Suicide Squad pulled in $745 million - the reviews were unkind, to say the least (they hold 26 percent and 25 percent ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively).

When Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman briefly popped up in 2016's Batman v Superman and effortlessly stole the show from Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, a lot of fans' excitement rightly came with a trace of trepidation - would DC let us down again with another dark and dour trudge? The answer is a resounding no.

Even though Wonder Woman is still in the same DC Extended Universe as its predecessors, the film lacks their cynical tone and style in favor of showcasing an endearing and earnest superhero. Diana's naiveté has yet to be dimmed by the gritty realities of defending a humanity that doesn't necessarily deserve her, and Gadot brings a surprising amount of levity to the role. The fiery demigoddess from the island of Themyscira, which is inhabited solely by a race of female warriors called the Amazons, is steadfast in her beliefs that peace can be achieved for mankind if only she can destroy Ares, the god of war.

She gets her chance to save the world when the film's damsel in distress - Steve Trevor (the ridiculously charming Chris Pine), an American spy working undercover for British intelligence during WWI - crashes just off the shore of her island. After recovering from the shock of meeting a guy for the first time, Diana convinces him to take her to the land of man (erm, London) as a favor for saving his life, so she can kill Ares and put an end to the war she believes he's responsible for.

Diana approaches customs of modern civilization with a wide-eyed curiosity. She questions Steve about things like why a man and woman are holding hands on the sidewalk, and a memorable sequence sees her kicking and punching her way out of the restrictive, frou-frou 1900s outfits he wants her to wear to blend in. At the same time, she's unrelentingly fierce and highly skilled when it comes to combat (being raised by Amazonian women will do that, I imagine) and refuses to let (or even bother to understand why) her status as a woman might hold her back in Steve's world. She charges into a room full of all male military generals with the same ferocity she has on the battlefield. She also has a refreshingly frank (and positive) approach to sex and never once falters or pauses to question her own self-worth. In other words, she's literally and figuratively smashing the patriarchy.

All of this is, of course, owed to both Gadot's performance and Jenkins's smart decisions behind the camera. There's a seamless streamlining of years of comic book history and a straightforward introduction to the Greek mythology that is woven into the fabric of Wonder Woman's mythos. Absent are clunky tie-ins to Justice League or other DC characters (save for two quick references to Bruce Wayne and Wayne Industries at the beginning and end of the film), which gives Wonder Woman a sense of individuality and lightness. Rather than shoehorning in teases or Easter eggs for future movies, Jenkins tells Diana's origin story simply. Diana is the star, and it's all the better for it.

Along with its pivot away from the feel of other DC properties, it's hard not to notice the parallels to Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger. Like Steve Rogers, Diana is idealistic and passionate about what she believes in, and much of Wonder Woman is wrapped up in the carnage of war. The action scenes are excellent (slo-mo for days), and the era of "the war to end war" provides the perfect backdrop for Diana's strength and freedom to rail against. In the 1910s, women couldn't vote, were barely a part of the workforce, and certainly weren't allowed to be a part of government; Diana is the antithesis of those values in every way.

This is never more apparent than in her first real tangle with the Germans, who are posited as one of the film's big bads. Uninhibited by the restraints of an average human body, she ignores the pleas of all the men around her to stay down, instead stepping bravely out into the no man's land of the trenches to save an occupied village on the other side. Flinging machine gun bullets off of her armor with a steely determination and advancing on the enemy in a way none of the other soldiers ever could, it ends up being the film's biggest stand-up-and-cheer moment.

As I watched Diana in this scene, I found myself truly moved, struggling to keep the rising lump in my throat at bay. I couldn't help but think of that little girl dressed in her homemade costume, staring up in wonder at an empowering female character dismantling the rules of what women can be and what they can do. She, and tons of other young women out there, finally have a superhero of their own to grow up with and be inspired by in a time when they need it most. It's because of this that Wonder Woman transcends being just a really good superhero movie - it's so, so much more than that. What Jenkins and Gadot have accomplished, carving out a space for women in a fandom that has long been dominated by men, is incredibly important. In an age when Black Widow can't even get her own action figure, let alone a solo film, I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.

Wonder Woman is here, and she's here to stay.

The Touching Way Katy Perry's Dress Paid Tribute to the Manchester Victims

Katy Perry performed at Ariana Grande's One Love Manchester concert and made sure her outfit had a special tribute to the victims, too. When she went on stage to sing, Katy wore a feathery white Sonia Rykiel cape over her dress. We couldn't see the special note just then, but when she took off the outerwear, we spotted her moving message.

Printed on the back of her turtleneck dress and on the sleeves were images of the victims from the suicide bombing, which killed 22 and injured at least 59. The photos formed a heart on the back of Katy's dress, and as the singer belted out her greatest hits, the outfit was noticeable to the crowd and families of the victims. This 93-Year-Old Bride Chose Her Wedding Dress With the Help of the Internet

A 93-year-old woman from Australia wasn't quite sure what she wanted to wear for her wedding, so she turned to the internet for answers. Sylvia Martin visited a shop called Birdsnest to shop for a wedding dress before she ties the knot next month. The shop took to Facebook to post pictures of Martin wearing four different options, asking followers to weigh in on their favorite. In the post, they also shared some of the sweet backstory on Martin and her groom, 88-year-old Frank:

Frank and Sylvia have known each other for more than 20 years, and Frank has 'many times' asked Sylvia to marry him. Sylvia has always refused, thinking that to take a new surname would be disrespectful to her deceased husband. A year ago, Sylvia took ill and moved to Canberra to be near her family, and Frank thought all hope was lost. When Sylvia recovered, she found Frank, who was living in Adelaide, and convinced him to move to Canberra to be with her. Frank arrived a couple of months ago and again asked Sylvia to marry him. Sylvia had learned that you can keep your own surname when you marry, and so said yes.

The post went viral in late May, and according to The Canberra Times, Martin will wear option C - but she also bought option D for more casual occasions.

Miley Cyrus Will Win You Over With Her Wedding Dress

I don't know when or if Miley Cyrus is getting married. While Billy Ray Cyrus posted a photo that suggests she and Liam Hemsworth tied the knot, it hasn't been confirmed. Maybe Miley isn't even thinking about marriage. But in my imaginary world, she walks down the aisle in a pretty spectacular wedding dress. You see, ever since I was young, I looked at Miley as someone who represented versatility. She played two different characters on Hannah Montana, and my younger sister plastered posters of Miley all over her walls, some in which she was dressed up like Hannah, others in which she was just herself in jeans and a three-quarter-sleeved tee. But even when she was just being Miley, the actress and singer looked unique and a little bit quirky.

She's gone through many stages, but there has never been a time when Miley's paid attention to trends. During her rise to fame, she wore flares and cowboy boots, maybe because they were representative of where she came from: Franklin, TN. Post-breakup with Liam Hemsworth (the two have rekindled their relationship), Miley kind of went HAM with her wardrobe. And I liked it. What she wore, or didn't wear, was all a part of her personal revolution.

Miley's style at this point could basically be described as costume like. She dressed as a twerking teddy bear and supported LGBT rights in rainbows and big, furry coats. Then, at the 2015 Met Gala, the industry's elite gathered on the red carpet, but Miley stood alone in a cutout Alexander Wang gown. It ended up on some "worst dressed" lists, but I think it was my favorite outfit of the night. It didn't seem like Miley was trying to appear sexy or edgy but just to look like herself.

So now, as outsiders speculate on whether Miley and Liam got hitched, I can't help but to imagine her would-be bridal look. I doubt Miley Cyrus's wedding dress will be all white. It might be neon, a mix of colors, or come with an inflatable skirt. Miley might not wear a wedding dress at all, should she get married. Maybe she'll go naked. She did reveal on the Today show that she prefers to stay out of the fashion conversation: "I don't want people to talk about what I'm wearing. That's usually why I don't wear too much," she said.

One thing's for sure: if Miley Cyrus gets married, her look won't include a ballgown so glamorous that everyone focuses on the pretty (or crazy!) details. They won't be talking about The Dress, because god knows it won't be wearing her. It'll be all about Miley. Read on to see why we know Miley will hit it out of the park on her special day.

Frustrated Mom's Viral Message About the Pressure State Tests Put on Her Kids

When Adrian Wood received a call from the nurse's office, she was told that her child was in tears over jaw pain. The concerned mom spoke to her third-grade boy and asked if he wanted her to pick him up.

Despite the pain, the boy told his mom that he couldn't go home because of the EOGs (North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests). She quickly explained that his health comes first and of course he could leave school if needed. However, her child didn't see it that way. "If I don't pass, I won't go to fourth grade," the stressed child replied.

At this point, Adrian is more than over the pressure that these state tests put on young children and wants that weight to be lifted. This teary phone call reminded her of her older child last year before he took his state exams. Since then, she's spoken to the teacher, school principal, superintendent, and Governor Roy Cooper. She's also written to her senators, representatives, and state superintendent looking for answers about the benefits of these lengthy exams for young children.

"Just today, I spoke quite a while to First Lady Cooper's chief of staff who interestingly enough refuses to allow her children to participate in North Carolina EOGs," she wrote in an impassioned post on Facebook. "I can't find one person that praises them or offers valuable benefits. I hear about showing growth, but who gives a sh*t?"

Adrian made a plea to the general public to share their thoughts and experiences with anyone willing to listen - and especially those who don't want to hear it. "Use your voice to speak for our children and our teachers," she wrote. "Tell me how EOGs and the pressure they bring benefit my family. What message are we sending to our children? How will they remember the days of elementary school? Will they remember the awesome teachers that nurtured them or will they only remember those tests? Tests that had little to do with amazing schools."

The Coolest Part About Selena Gomez's Dress Is Hiding Behind Her Long Hair

Selena Gomez is in New York City promoting her new single "Bad Liar," but all we're talking about is her amazing outfits. The singer and 13 Reasons Why producer has already stepped out in a fringe crop top and a futuristic wrap dress, but her most eye-catching look was this bright orange maxi dress from Christopher Kane's Pre-Fall 2017 collection.

Featuring a sexy slit that showed off her toned legs and a tight bodice, the best part about Selena's vibrant dress was hidden behind her long brown hair: a contrasting black collar. The star proved that the classic Halloween shades should mix and match beyond Oct. 31. Scroll ahead to shop the trend behind Selena's outfit.

Khloe Kardashian Looks Totally Different Without This 1 Contour Hack

Seeing celebrities without makeup is somewhat of a guilty pleasure for us, and we now know what one member of the famously contour-savvy Kardashian clan looks like when she's not all dolled up.

After documenting an intense workout with her personal trainer, Khloé Kardashian sat down for a quick postshower Snapchat session with a fresh face and slicked-back wet hair. In her selfie videos, it looks like she wasn't wearing any makeup (besides what appears to be a bit of eyebrow product and some understated false lashes). We can't help but notice how her nose looks different than usual when she doesn't have any makeup on.

Khloé has gone on record to say that, no, she has not had a nose job - and she even explained why her nose shape changes. "When you're pregnant, your nose spreads because there's fat pockets in there, I guess," she said on Kocktails With Khloé. "So when I lost weight, my nose did get smaller, and also I now know about contouring. Like when I wash my face, my nose is wider."

The reality star looks gorgeous with or without makeup on (#SkinGoals), but these snaps are a testament to her superior contouring skills.

Here's another makeup-free Snapchat shot of Khloé.

Trump's Tweets Seem Even More Unhinged When Presented as Press Statements

In the five months following his inauguration, President Donald Trump's impulsive tweets have become somewhat commonplace. A new Twitter account, however, is attempting to illustrate just how unprofessional they are by simply copying and pasting the president's latest tweets into the official, presidential statement format.

The idea for the account was inspired by former White House staffer Pat Cunnane. On June 4, he tweeted, "For context - because he's President - all of Trump's Tweets should be mocked up in the correct Presidential statement format. It's telling." That same day, coder Russel Neiss executed the idea by creating a Twitter account named Real Press Sec.

The result is deeply upsetting. For example, the president's recent tweet criticizing London Mayor Sadiq Khan appears even more disrespectful as a press statement. And his recent tweet addressed to Fox & Friends, using all caps and an exclamation point, looks even more juvenile.

Since its creation on June 4, the account has amassed nearly 50,000 followers. Though there are currently only nine tweets, the account promises to check Trump's account every five minutes for new tweets. Based on his social media habits, we can expect plenty more updates from this new account in the near future.

If You Want to Lose Weight by Running, Read This

You started running months ago, yet every time you hop on the scale, you're let down by the results. What gives? While running does burn mega calories, here are some reasons you may not be seeing the weight-loss results you're after.

Postrun Pig-Outs

Burning tons of calories can cause a famished feeling afterward, but it's important to fuel wisely. Choose junk food as your recovery food and not only are you overdoing it on the calorie front, you'll be hungry again in the next hour. Although a postrun snack is essential, make sure it's packed with protein and filling carbs and does not exceed 150 calories. If you exercised before a meal, enjoy a sensibly portioned plate, and don't go overboard as a way to reward your efforts. If you still find you're utterly famished after a workout, it probably means you need to fuel up before you exercise, so enjoy one of these pre-workout snacks before heading out for a run.

You Don't Run Enough

If you're running and not seeing results, take a look at your calendar. Doing one 45-minute run or a couple 20-minute runs a week won't burn enough calories to lose weight. In order to lose a pound a week, you'll need to cut 500 calories each day, through a combination of diet and exercise. If losing weight is your goal, run three to four times per week and incorporate other forms of calorie-burning cardio and/or metabolism-boosting strength training on the other days.

You're Burning Less Than You Think

You just got back from a run, you're covered in sweat, and you're convinced you burned over 500 calories. But did you really? A 150-pound woman will burn 495 calories running for 45 minutes at a 10-minute-per-mile pace. If you didn't run for that long or that fast, then you're not burning as many calories as you thought. It's best to track your workout just to be sure, using a heart rate monitor or one of these cheap running apps on your phone.

Same Workout, Different Day

If you found a great three-mile loop in your neighborhood, running it for a few weeks can help running become a habit. The problem lies with continually doing the same running workout. Your muscles will quickly adapt to the demands you're placing on them, which is a surefire way to hit a weight-loss plateau. Avoid this issue by mixing up your running workouts: include speed intervals, hills, long runs, and short runs, and run on different surfaces and in new places to keep your muscles guessing and continuously strengthening. Check out these four training techniques that will challenge your run. As mentioned earlier, it's also important not to make running your sole source of exercise. Include other forms of cardio as well as strength training since muscle mass burns more calories and speeds up your metabolism.

It's Not Just About the Scale

Running is one of the best ways to tone your lower body because it helps diminish fat while building muscle. Muscle tissue is more dense than fat tissue, so it takes up less space. This means that although your weight might not decrease (and might even go up a little), other body measurements will change, such as waist circumference, bra size, or the shape of your tush. The number on the scale isn't always the best way to monitor your progress. Even though the scale's not budging, you might be able to fit into those skinny jeans you had your eye on.

Tom Cruise Nonchalantly Crashes a Plane Full of Cocaine in the American Made Trailer

You might be used to seeing Tom Cruise pulling off insane stunts for shady government agencies in the Misson: Impossible franchise, but he's going a decidedly sketchier route in American Made. He stars as Barry Seal, a hustler and pilot recruited by the CIA to deliver illegal drugs and weapons, in this "unbelievable true story." From crashing a plane full of cocaine to being held at gunpoint by angry drug dealers, this looks like yet another chance for Cruise to prove why he's such an iconic action star. The movie, directed by Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman, hits theaters on Sept. 29 and costars Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jesse Plemons, and Jayma Mays.

Mom Who Took Extra Pool Precautions Shares Her Toddler's Near-Death Drowning Accident

After Erica DeSpain read an article about drowning, she and her husband, Jamie, talked extensively about the extra precautions they would take at Jamie's parents' pool over Labor Day Weekend in 2016. They would keep floaties on their then-2-year-old daughter, Hadley, at all times, an adult would have eyes on her every single second, the door leading out to the pool would have its extra lock on it after hours . . . she planned for every possible scenario, or so she thought.

To her horror, with four adults standing just six feet away, Hadley nearly drowned.

The mom, who blogs about parenting her two little girls at Whimsical September, shared with the Today community the details of "the most painful 30 seconds" of her life, in which a lifeless Hadley was pulled out of the hot tub next to the pool by her husband, who then performed CPR to save his little girl's life.

"I thought our 2-year-old daughter was dying," she wrote. "My husband screamed a sound I've never heard him make. We saw her floating face down in a hot tub, and the sheer horror of seeing her blue, seemingly lifeless body pulled out of the water is an image I'm fighting to move past."

It all started around 5 p.m. on the family's last day of their stay with Jamie's parents in Austin, TX. Hadley claimed she was finished swimming and asked for her floaty to be removed. "Allowing that floaty to be taken off of her was my misstep," DeSpain wrote. Then, with all four adults engaged in casual conversation right next to the pool, Hadley silently and quickly climbed into the hot tub. "I can't explain the things that were going through my mind," she writes of the seconds between Hadley being pulled out of the water and Jamie performing the CPR that would save his daughter's life. "I was so hysterical that my brother-in-law was holding me back as I screamed because all I wanted to do was hold her. It was horrific."

Luckily, Hadley began to cough up water while a 911 operator was on the phone, and paramedics in the ambulance and doctors at Dell Children's Hospital were able to keep the little girl stable. "I remember one doctor looking Jamie square in the eye and telling him that he absolutely saved her life," DeSpain recalled. "Twenty-four hours later we were released and sent home to attempt to move on with our lives with our healthy miracle."

Nearly a year later, DeSpain is choosing to recall these details of that traumatic experience to share key takeaways about pool safety with other parents to make sure that nothing like this ever happens to another family:

1. Having more adults (aka more sets of eyes) around can be beneficial, or hurtful. It's easy to identify that I let my guard down when it came to watching Hadley closely because I assumed there were more people to watch her, but in this situation more people actually served as a distraction. We all indirectly thought someone else was watching her.

2. Floaties don't take the place of knowing how to swim. When Hadley was wearing her floaty, she knew she could be independent. We assume she forgot that she didn't have it on. Our new goal is to get her and Sadie private swim lessons and teach Hadley to swim before we're around a pool again. . . .

3. CPR certification and recertification is important and a skill that's actually life-saving if done correctly and with confidence. I had no idea that Jamie goes through annual CPR recertification with the Army, so I was blown away by his ability to jump into action and do what he knew he had to do. The last time I was certified in CPR was four-and-a-half years ago, and it's scary to think how much of those skills I've forgotten. It's not knowledge that's applied often, so forgetting it is easy. . . .

It's not knowledge that's applied often, so forgetting it is easy. . . .

Tom Holland Surprises Kids in the Hospital by Dressing Up as Spider-Man

Tom Holland channeled his superhero persona during his recent visit to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. The Spider-Man: Homecoming actor cheered up a few sick patients by signing autographs, taking pictures, and demonstrating how his famous Spidey suit works. Aside from showing off his stunt skills by doing a flip in the hallway, the 20-year-old also shared a cute moment with a young girl as she got visibly starstruck over how cute he was without his mask. Of course, Tom isn't the only celebrity using his star power for good. In March, fellow Marvel superhero Chris Evans took a break from promoting his movie Gifted to go room to room visiting patients.

Recall Alert! Frozen Tuna Tested Positive For Hepatitis A

On June 1, the Food and Drug Administration released a statement about its ongoing investigation into potentially contaminated frozen tuna distributed by Hilo Fish. According to the report, the Hawaii Department of Health first discovered the contagious hepatitis A virus in samples of frozen tuna on May 1. Shortly after, on May 18, Hilo Fish Company launched an official recall of tuna from Sustainable Seafood Company and Santa Cruz Seafood, Inc.

So far, there haven't been any illnesses reported in conjunction with the potential frozen tuna contamination, but the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is advising anyone from Texas, Oklahoma, and California who hasn't been vaccinated for the hepatitis A virus and ate raw or under-cooked tuna products in the past two weeks to get treated with post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Keep reading to see a list of all of the frozen tuna products that have been recalled so far, and make sure to toss out anything that may be affected!

  • Frozen Yellowfin tuna steaks from Sustainable Seafood Company
  • Yellowfin tuna cubes from Santa Cruz Seafood
  • 8 ounce Tuna Steaks from Hilo Fish Company with an expiration date of Oct. 1, 2018
  • 15 pound Frozen Yellowfin tuna cubes with an expiration date of April 4, 2019

For extra precaution, the FDA has also provided a list of restaurants and other retail establishments that received the recalled frozen tuna. Better safe than sorry!
