After Having a Baby With Down Syndrome, This Mom Wishes She Could "Go Back in Time"
Most birth stories don't culminate with the new mom admitting, "I didn't feel a rush of love; I felt a wave of fear and anxiety." But then again, stand-up comedian Bethany Van Delft is not most moms. The mother's moving account of her daughter's surprise Down syndrome diagnosis is raw and gut-wrenchingly honest, and it should be required viewing for any parent. After Van Delft shared her own journey for storytelling nonprofit The Moth, the emotional story of shame, anger, depression, and eventual healing quickly began going viral on Facebook.
Van Delft's story begins with her "perfect" pregnancy with daughter Lucia "Lulu" Esperanza and the shock she felt when she looked into Lulu's eyes and suspected that her newborn may have Down syndrome. "My worry turned to fear, and my fear turned to panic," shared the visibly emotional mother. "The first few weeks was just a blur of tears and forms and doctors appointments," recalled Van Delft, admitting that this period was filled with "lists I made of things that were never gonna happen now, and all the things that she would never do."
After leaving the hospital with her new baby, the comedian soberly remembered slipping into a depression and not connecting with her daughter on a personal level:
"I was pining all the time for the little family we thought we'd have, that I always dreamed of. For the home that I thought we'd have. I hate the place we lived now, filled with all the baby shower gifts and the strollers and the bassinets and the stuffed animals; the things that used to make me daydream and smile, but now just wrenched my gut. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know how to go on."
But after a while, Van Delft transitioned into action mode, diving into activities and research for Lulu, all the while hiding her own pain. "At night, I'd watch YouTube videos of kids with Down syndrome reciting the alphabet, or playing guitar, or driving a car, until I fell asleep," she remembered, sharing that she felt isolated despite bringing Lulu to music classes and museums alongside other moms.
After one particularly upsetting recollection about a fellow mom who questioned whether Lulu should be "with her own kind," Van Delft said she learned to hide her own emotions: "I never talked about how scared and lonely I was. I never talked about how I ached, I never talked about how much I hated Down syndrome; I never talked about how much shame I felt about that." She admitted that she was angry at parents with "typical" children and withdrew emotionally from her partner as she became swallowed up with self-doubt, shame, and fear.
The turning point for Bethany and Lulu came on a vacation with friends, when the comedian connected with another woman and vocalized her fears and shame. This friend, Van Delft said, reminded her that life would unfold the way it was intended to - "because of us and in spite of us."
After receiving encouragement from this dear friend, Van Delft shared the shift she felt in her relationship to Lulu and to the world:
"On the last day, Lulu played with everyone! She threw her beach ball, and they'd catch it, and everyone would cheer. They said this was the best day of the vacation. And I'd watched them get to know Lulu, and I got to see her through their eyes. She was hilarious! She was fun, she was warm, she's smart, and she definitely did things when she wanted to. She was our Lulu: our light and our hope."
Cue the tears. Van Delft realized that she wasn't alone in her anxieties, doubts, and fears. "Once I stopped fearing being this 'kind' of mom, I realized that all moms cry a lot. All moms doubt their ability to raise this child, all moms worry about the future."
"I used to wish I could go back in time and get that test [to find out if Lulu had Down syndrome in the womb] after all," Van Delft recalled. "But now I wish that I could go back in time and allow myself to feel the joy that a new mother feels, because that's what I was."
After bringing viewers to tears with this tale of coming to terms with this new normal of motherhood, the comedian naturally ended things with a bit of humor. "It's a lot easier to talk about this stuff now," she told the Moth audience. "Now, if somebody asks me if I was shocked when she was born, I say: 'Of course I was shocked. I never expected a daughter of mine to have straight blond hair. I definitely thought she'd be rocking the Afro puffs.'"
Watch the full, poignant video of Van Delft's story above. No matter what "type" of parent you are, you'll find your own heart aching, breaking, and healing alongside hers . . . and you'll definitely walk away feeling inspired.
The 4 Safety Features Your Child's Car Seat Must Have
Every car seat manufacturer's main focus is to produce a car seat you feel safe putting your child into every single time you get in the car, but not all seats are created equal, so to say. There are certain safety features every parent should make sure their child's car seat has to ensure that they're as safe as possible each and every joyride.
Sarah Tilton, Britax's child passenger safety technician and chair of the National Child Passenger Safety Board, told POPSUGAR that "there are some key factors that you want to look for when you're looking for a car seat." Tilton says that though many car seats have all of these features, each seat's "ease of use" will vary, and it's important to know which product will be the easiest to install correctly, as so many parents drive with their child's car seat improperly installed. She said, "The harder things are to do, the less likely parents are to do them correctly each and every time."
Ahead, the four features your car seat should have and the things you should look out for in terms of ease of use.
- An easy installation process. Tilton says the first thing parents should look for is how a particular seat will be installed. If it's LATCH system, are there premium push-on connectors that click in easily, as opposed to metal hooks? If your child has maxed out of the LATCH system's weight capacity, is the seat belt installation a simple lap-only or is it lap and shoulder? Does it have a built-in locking mechanism to hold the seat belt and car seat firmly in place? Some car seats don't have any type of locking mechanism for the belts, which is something to consider.
- Easy harness adjustments. It should be easy to properly secure your child in the harness of their car seat. "One key factor would be how easy it is to change the harness height," Tilton said, referring to the points in which the harness straps connect to the top of the child's seat. "Rear-facing we always want that harness height to be at or slightly below the child's shoulders. Forward-facing we always want it to be at or above the child's shoulders." The best thing to look for when shopping are harness heights that will adjust with a knob or dial, rather than a seat that requires you to remove and rethread the harness straps, which leaves room for error.
- Crash-impact protection. No parent wants to envision being in a crash with their children in tow, but all car seats have certain features to help protect your child in case of an accident. For example, some seats have side-impact protection, which means the seat's optimized for potential side-impact collisions; others have a "bounce-back" bar for rear-facing seats, which helps to limit motion and impact against the seat back in a crash. Tilton touched on Britax's unique SafeCell Impact Protection, an integrated system of impact-stabilizing and absorbing features that work together to protect your child. Be sure to explore multiple brands' options to make a purchase you feel comfortable with.
- The correct sizing for the child's needs. Parents need to make sure that the car seat they choose is appropriate for their child's age, weight, and height. However, Tilton says you should never hurry to move your child into the next seat before they've fully grown out of their last one. "We downplay the safety of our child each time we move to the next step," she said. "Don't be in a hurry to move them to the next step until they're ready. Keep your child in each direction and each mode of car seat use until they outgrow it."

Lea DeLaria Will Make You Petrified of Orange Is the New Black Season 5
It's been a long, cold Fall, Winter, and Spring without new episodes of Orange Is the New Black. Now, just as the sun is about to come out, we're heading indoors to binge on season five. If you thought things couldn't get worse after season four, you're wrong. The new episodes pick up right as Daya aims the gun at CO Humphrey and take place over to course of three days at Litchfield. Ahead of the premiere, I chatted with star Lea DeLaria about what's next for Big Boo and what to expect from the rest of the ladies.
POPSUGAR: Let's start with the question everyone's asking. Last season ended on such a note of frustration and rage with that cliffhanger - how is this season going to begin?
Lea DeLaria: Let's put it this way: the rage continues. I think you can tell that by the trailer . . . but let's just say, yeah, yeah, this season, the rage continues.
PS: One of the things that we love about the show is how you go to such dark places, but there are so many moments of levity. Are we going to see that in the new season?
LD: Oh, hell yes. This is a classic American dramedy. And what makes it that are those moments of real rage, darkness, drama and the real moments of laughter that you have. Since season one, that's been the signature of what our writing team does, and that will continue. Everybody thought I was going to shiv somebody with that screwdriver. In nobody's wildest dreams did they think, "Big Boo's going to MacGyver that into a dildo and pleasure herself into orgasm on screen." And that was f*cking hilarious. Some of the funniest moments come out of some the darkest places and vice versa. That's just a real indication of terrific writing ability, skills. Our people have such mad skills.
PS: So much of Big Boo's storyline has revolved around other people like Pennsatucky. Are we going to see more forward movement in Big Boo's life?
LD: I don't think Big Boo fans are going to be disappointed.
PS: I actually spoke to Kate Mulgrew last week, and she was saying that we're going to be "gobsmacked" by the story. How do you see audiences reacting to the new episodes?
LD: First of all, as a perfect gentleman, I would never disagree with a lady in public. As a budding actor - even though I'm 58 years old, I still feel like I'm a budding actor - I would never argue with Kate Mulgrew on anything. She's a goddamn God, OK? And I do happen to be in total agreement with her. You will be gobsmacked by it, and audiences are going to lose their minds. Season four was on every critic's list as the number one thing on television last year. . . . So when I say season five is better than season four, people are going to go, "What?" It is. I cannot figure out how we do it or how our writers are able to keep this show so fresh, so interesting, so weird, so unique, so amazing, informative, and life-changing season after season after season. Amazing.
PS: How was it for you to shoot a season that only takes place over three days? Was the vibe different on the set?
LD: What becomes difficult about it being a three-day period is just making sure that the time frame works. This is actor-y stuff, but . . . we spent a lot of time going, "What time is it? Where was I just? OK. Got it." It was kind of rough when you're shooting out of season. Costume-wise, it can be incredibly uncomfortable for an actor. And it's been my lot in life that whenever I am outdoors in any kind of seasonal shot, I am never dressed appropriately to the weather.
PS: It's just freezing where you guys are?
LD: Yeah. I had to film an outdoor scene and it was Winter in New York, but not in the show. So Boo was in her white beater and her uniform.
PS: I'll look out for goosebumps.
LD: It was bloody f*cking cold.
PS: Are there any details that you put into Big Boo, either over the course of the show or this season in particular, that you're hoping audiences pick up on?
LD: Well, I hope they see that she's butch.
PS: I don't know if they got that impression, actually.
LD: The only way that I put any detail [in] is with my staunch refusal to do anything that I don't think is authentic. However, I've never had to put my foot down in that arena at all at Orange Is the New Black. They've never asked me to do anything that I feel a butch dyke wouldn't do or Big Boo wouldn't do. I have had that issue on other sets where I've had to go, "You know, if I was a black person saying, 'This is something a black person wouldn't do,' you would listen to me. I need you to realize that a butch dyke is different than any other kind of lesbian and there are things that we do very authentically." I've never had to do that with Orange. They've always been right on it. I just hope that the audience sees that.
Orange Is the New Black season four is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor Reminisce About Moulin Rouge (and Drinking Absinthe)
It's been 16 years since Moulin Rouge hit theaters, but the memories are still fresh for stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The pair sat down together as part of Variety's "Actors on Actors" series to talk about the experience they shared filming the 2001 movie. Reminiscing about their time training, singing, and dancing, Kidman insisted, "You were so much better than me! It's so true." Meanwhile, when they weren't shooting the movie, they apparently had some "pretty wild nights," as Kidman called them, with McGregor joking that he doesn't quite remember all of them.
As they laughed about their memories, Kidman acknowledged what it was like to share such an incredible experience with another actor. "When you get to share something like that together, it's yours forever," she said. "It's something we all created together and it bonds you in a very particular way."
Check out the pair's sweet reunion above, then see pictures of Nicole's recent date night with husband Keith Urban.

The Wait is Finally Over! The Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette Has Been Revealed
After being under wraps for two years, the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill palette was finally unveiled on June 5, and boy was it worth the wait. The palette includes 35 brand new eye shadow shades ranging from neutrals to bolder hues. While the set incorporates many brown shades, lovers of brighter eye shadows will not be disappointed. Jaclyn made sure to include a rich cobalt blue, bright teal, aquamarine, and a royal purple.
In an Instagram post, Jaclyn shared how picky she was about "pigmentation, application, and blendability" of the shades in her palette. Considering how Champagne Pop from her collaboration with Becca has become a staple in many beauty lover's makeup bags, the excitement surrounding this product among beauty lovers is immense.
The palette will launch on June 21 on Morphe's website and will cost $38. Considering that the palette comes out to only costing a little more than a dollar per shadow, this is a cost effective way to expand your makeup shade collection.

You'll Never Guess the 1 Place Budget-Conscious Brides Buy Wedding Flowers
As if the venue, gown, and music for your wedding weren't expensive enough, wedding flowers are infamously pricey. If you're still picking yourself up off the floor after reading the four- (or even five-) figure quote your local florist gave you for your big day, we have a shockingly brilliant alternative: Costco. Yes, the membership club known for offering steep discounts sells flowers - and price-savvy brides have been shopping here for years, ordering everything from bulk flowers they assemble themselves to simple and elegant premade bouquets, tabletop arrangements, and even boutonnieres.
The best part? Costco wedding flowers cost a mere fraction of what a florist would charge. We're talking hundreds of dollars for all your flowers instead of thousands. In fact, one bride based in Iowa said her local florist quoted her $4 per rose (which didn't include fillers or the cost to arrange them) while Costco's roses broke down to 75 cents each! And if you're wondering about quality, the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Most brides rave about how expensive their wedding flowers looked, but they do note that there's a much shorter lead time with Costco. The megastore will only process orders a couple months to weeks before the wedding. They also point out that it's better to order certain flowers, like hydrangea or roses, a day or two in advance to let them fill out and open before the big day. And if you want to DIY your wedding flowers, there are additional considerations to make.
You can take a look at Costco's beautiful floral offerings online, and if you don't see exactly what you're looking for, talk to the floral department at your local store. There's a good chance they'll work with you to create your dream flowers.
Wonder Woman: Blink and You'll Miss This Tiny Justice League Easter Egg
One of the great things about Wonder Woman (of which there are many), is that the origin story of Diana Prince is allowed to exist on its own. Rather than shoehorning in teases and Easter eggs for future DC movies like Justice League or Aquaman, director Patty Jenkins makes sure Wonder Woman remains the star of the show. There is, however, a very slight connection to the rest of the DC Extended Universe that actually explains a photo first seen in last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Wonder Woman begins with Diana Prince in modern-day Paris, heading to her office at the Louvre. She gets a package from Wayne Industries and opens it to find a black-and-white WWI-era photograph of her dressed in her full Wonder Woman ensemble alongside Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and three other men. Attached is a note from Bruce Wayne (aka Batman aka Ben Affleck), who writes that he dug up the original copy.
As anyone who sat through Batman v Superman might recall, Bruce Wayne first stumbles on the photo after obtaining Lex Luthor's drive full of information about "metahumans" roaming around the world: Superman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman. As he peruses Diana's file, he sees the photo in question and deduces that she's an immortal of some kind (either that, or uses an incredible skincare regimen). In the background is a half-destroyed city that Diana, Steve, and the rest of the gang free from German occupation in Wonder Woman.
The image is virtually the only link to the rest of the DCEU in the film, and although it's subtle, it gives anyone who's loyally watched all of Warner Bros.'s preceding superhero movies a better idea of the photo's origins. Diana emails Bruce a thank you ("Thank you for bringing him back to me," a reference to her true love, Steve Trevor), which further solidifies the bond between the two that will likely lead to the Dark Knight convincing her to join the Justice League and fight for humanity once more.

17 Badass Facts You Should Know About Literal Wonder Woman Gal Gadot
After nabbing smaller parts in movies like the Fast & Furious franchise and Triple 9, Gal Gadot is poised to take over Hollywood thanks to her starring role as Wonder Woman, the HBIC of the DC superhero universe. Since we'll be seeing plenty of the 32-year-old while she plays the titular hero in three blockbusters over the next few years, there's no better time to bulk up on your knowledge of the charming Israeli actress.
This New Feature Coming to iOS 11 Will Make Typing So Much Easier
With every iOS release, Apple somehow manages to downplay some of the more useful features coming to the iPhone. The company did it again with the reveal of iOS 11 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote on June 5. While iOS 11 will arrive with plenty of flashy features, it'll also finally have a one-handed keyboard.
The one-handed keyboard, which has existed on the iPhone since iOS 8 but wasn't easily accessible, is coming to iPhone in the Fall and is called QuickType Keyboard. To access it, you'll need to touch and hold down the emoji icon on your keyboard and choose the one-handed typing option. You'll then see your keyboard move to your thumb.
The feature will most likely bring relief to people who use the iPhone's bigger models (like the iPhone 7 Plus) and have smaller hands. And though the QuickType Keyboard isn't a swipe-to-type keyboard, which does make on-the-go typing easier, it's definitely a step toward that.

The feature will most likely bring relief to people who use the iPhone's bigger models (like the iPhone 7 Plus) and have smaller hands. And though the QuickType Keyboard isn't a swipe-to-type keyboard, which does make on-the-go typing easier, it's definitely a step toward that.
A Subtle Form of Slut Shaming You May Not Realize You're Perpetuating
On May 23, the Trump administration put another dollar in its "Swear (that we are trying to f*ck over women) Jar" when it rolled out a new rule. The proposed legislation would amend the Affordable Care Act to allow employers to opt out of providing contraception coverage for employees if they have a "conscience-based" objection. This means that if a company has a religious or moral (or really any) opposition to birth control, it can remove free preventive coverage from the medical insurance plans it offers its employees. Because honestly, who hasn't wanted their boss and their government in their panties?
Under the 2010 ACA, contraceptives are free for women because birth control is considered a necessary component of healthcare coverage. But the Obama administration made an exception to the ACA's coverage, allowing religious nonprofits and closely held for-profit companies with religious objections to deny coverage for some - or all - contraceptive purposes. Trump's new draft rule takes this a step (or rather, a giant leap) further and is much broader in its exemption allowances, which will inevitably affect millions of women around the country. In 2013 alone, the ACA contraception mandate helped 55 million women obtain birth control and saved them $1.4 billion in out-of-pocket healthcare spending. That's $1.4 billion with a capital "B" - money that could then be spent on feeding families, higher education, securing a roof over one's head . . . ya know, the little things.
Anyone can understand that if women are forced to spend, on average, $1,200/year on contraception, making birth control free will aid women in taking control of their physical and financial health. In terms of securing economic freedom and bringing families out of poverty, this is paramount. As women of the 21st century, we should all be on the same page there. But we too often tend to lose our spot in the Why Birth Control Is Necessary book we were all given as fourth-wave feminists.
Whenever the discussion of birth control arises, so does one of justification. We hear our friends and coworkers exclaim that, "This is BS! I'm on the pill, but it's for acne," or, "WTF, don't these Republicans know that a lot of women take the pill for endometriosis?! Like Lena Dunham . . . ," and, "Before birth control I had the worst cramps - I need this covered!" Which are all completely valid and reasonable arguments, but they kind of miss the point.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, a whopping 86 percent of women who use birth control use it for pregnancy prevention, aka its intended purpose. And that's awesome. But for some reason, when the topic of the pill comes up, we feel we need to offer up some other explanation besides, "I would like to have sex without having a child before I'm ready or can afford one." But why? Are we trying to appease reproductive-rights foes by offering up medical ailments that can be treated with the pill? Or do we still feel that, in 2017, we cannot be open and honest about the fact that we are sexually active?
As someone who has been guilty of the "acne" disclaimer on more than one occasion, I'm going to proffer that the majority of us, whether subconsciously or not, are still not completely comfortable with announcing that we have sex. We still fear that if we reveal that we use birth control to have sex, and not babies, that we'll be considered sluts - even though we know, as millennial women, that this is an antiquated and erroneous mindset. And yet, we perpetuate the cycle of slut shaming when we continue to use "acne" as an explanation for our BC prescription. Even if the aforementioned, alternative reasons explain your prescription, we still do not need to offer them up as some sort of mechanism to remove the pill's scarlet letter.
Clear skin and cramp-less periods are awesome, but so is having sex without an unplanned pregnancy. Wanting to have sex without an unplanned pregnancy should be enough of an explanation for our birth control. Wanting to have sex without an unplanned pregnancy should not require statistics and numbers to justify. Wanting to have sex without an unplanned pregnancy should be enough of a reason to demand access to birth control.
Our feminist foremothers didn't fight for our sexual liberation so that we could say we have "acne." We must direct the conversation around birth control by demanding that protected sex is our right and that no other explanation is necessary.
How a Mom Used Her Earrings to Prove That She Was Invisible After Giving Birth
Like many new moms, Anastasia Aligiannis noticed that things changed after giving birth to her baby boy. She felt like she had become completely invisible and to prove her point, she took out one of her earrings.
It took seven months before anyone noticed that she was only wearing one earring, despite being surrounded by family and friends. "All those social interactions, and no one ever looked me square in the face and noticed," she shared on Facebook. "It sort of cemented to me that as a very busy mom of then two children under two who 'just stayed at home' or 'didn't work.' I had almost become invisible not just to society, but to my family and friends, and really maybe even to myself."
Anastasia explained that even conversations over the phone followed a similar pattern: people asking how her children and husband are but never following up with asking about her. "I guess people figured if the people it was my responsibility to care for were OK, then I must be," she wrote.
Although many new moms can relate and may even smile in recognition, Anastasia made it clear that the point of her post wasn't to be funny but instead to send a message. "If today you are feeling overwhelmed, invisible or like you don't matter, you do. You are so important and are probably the cog that keeps everything running smoothly," she wrote. "Keep up the good work, and if no one else says it to you this week, know that you are invaluable in the work you do and your sacrifices do not go unnoticed."
Free Legal Advice - Why 1 Lawyer Thinks You Should Consider a Prenup
In the whirlwind of excitement leading up to your wedding day, one of the most decidedly unromantic considerations is whether or not to sign a prenup with your soon-to-be spouse. Not only is it nowhere near as fun as choosing floral arrangements or tasting cakes, it can also be uncomfortable to address the possibility of divorce, as few things dampen prewedding bliss quite like the question, "Hey, what happens if this doesn't work out?"
Still, it's wise to at least have a discussion about it and decide together, as a couple, what's right for you. We asked family lawyer Katie Kiihnl Leonard to navigate the thorny topic of prenups in the hopes of making it less intimidating.
5 Secrets to Make Curls Stay in Any Hair Type (Even Yours!)
Given the number of rollers, curling irons, and flatiron on the market designed to curl hair, you'd think by now getting long-lasting waves would be easy. But many of us still struggle to make a curl last more than a few minutes. The good news is there are usually some very simple ways to stop your curls from dropping or falling out completely. Whether you have fine hair that always falls flat, or super straight locks that just won't bend, we can help.
1. Change the State
The best way to make a curl stay in hair that is not naturally curly is to change the state of the hair as you curl; do this by going from wet to dry or from hot to cold. A wet set is more gentle and will always last the longest as the hair dries in shape. To do a wet set, wash and towel-dry hair, add your chosen holding product, then create your curls either with velcro rollers, your fingers and clips, rags, or bendy rollers (don't use heated tools on wet hair). Let the hair dry completely before removing. For quicker results, going from hot to cold will have the same effect, using hot rollers, steam rollers, curling iron, flatiron, or something similar.
2. Use Product, Always!
When you're trying to get your hair to do something it doesn't naturally do, you need to give it a helping hand. Don't expect a curling iron or GHD flatiron to work miracles on its own. Use some product! Firstly, for hot tools you'll need a heat protector like L'Oreal Paris Studio Pro Heat It Hot & Curl Heat Spray. Then choose a holding product that will give added oomph. If you hair has a natural wave, a curl-enhancing mousse like Schwarzkopf Got2Be Twisted Curl Mousse will help to provide hold and lasting power. But if you have straight hair, you'll need something really powerful. Superdrug Setting Lotion Extra Firm is like liquid hair spray. It's not the most glamorous product, but it will definitely help to hold a curl.
3. Let It Set
One of the biggest mistakes we make when trying to create a lasting curl is to use a tool like a curling iron, wand, or flatiron. These are great for ease of use and will give a nice temporary curl, but those curls will drop very quickly, especially if you have fine hair, or very heavy, long locks. You can still use your heated tools for a longer lasting curl, just add in one extra step. Clip each tonged coil to your head as you curl it, letting it sit on the head until it's completely cooled down. This goes back to point number one: you need to change the state to set the curl. Speed things up with the cool-shot button on your hair dryer, and only shake the hair out when it's stone cold. Your curls will last twice as long this way.
4. Leave Your Rollers In For as Long as Possible
Hot rollers are great for retro waves and styles that require lots of body, but most tutorials tell you to leave them in for only 10 or 20 minutes. This is fine if you're using them for volume or to smooth hair ready for an updo, but if you want curls that last through a night of dancing, then you need to let those hot rollers cool completely . . . which in our experience can take up to a couple of hours in thick or long hair. Plan ahead and keep your rollers in as long as you can. And don't forget to use a styling product!
5. Adjust Your Cut
If you have particularly thick or long hair, you'll probably struggle to get a DIY curl to stay in. The longer your hair gets, the heavier it is and the harder it'll be to get a uniform curl to stay. You may find the ends go frizzy and curly, but the lengths fall flat. You have a few options to fix this. Firstly, get lots of layers chopped in - especially around the front - to reduce weight and give the hair some bounce. You should find that these shorter sections curl better. Secondly, chop your hair a few inches shorter. The simple truth is super long hair will not curl easily if it's naturally straight. Finally, if you can't bear to face the scissors, try twisting wet hair into a bun (or two buns for very thick hair) and sleeping on it, or try headband curls; dampen your hair, part it as usual, and put a narrow stretchy headband over your head so it sits halfway down your forehead and quite high at the back of the head. Starting from the front, take a section of hair from below and wind it up and round the band over and over again, adding more hair each time as you move around the head (as if you're creating a big croissant with your hair). Leave this in for as long as possible - overnight is best. When you pull out the band, your hair will sit in bouncy, full curls!

BBQ Food and 9 Other Genius Ideas For a First Birthday Smash Sans Cake
Cake smashes are all the rage on social media - who doesn't love a kid covered in chunks of crumbs and frosting?! However, whether it's a parent's choice to not go HAM on the sugar just yet, cake just isn't their thing, or their child has shown interest in another type of food, there are plenty of moms and dads going different routes for their child's first birthday smash.
Lyndsey Wright, photographer at Lyndsey PhotoCo, is leading the charge in photographing these alternative smashes, having snapped photos of little ones cramming doughnuts into their tiny mouths or crunching on hard tacos with reckless abandon.
And we've got to admit, we thought these smashes were way cuter than any cake smash we've ever seen.
Aside from tacos and doughnuts (and yes, cake), Lyndsey has photographed quite a few other types of food smashes over the last few years, including a hilarious and delicious-looking BBQ food session. "I got sick of doing cake smashes over and over and over and over again so I started asking my clients if their baby had a favorite table food," Lyndsey told POPSUGAR Moms. "When one client said her baby loved BBQ last year, we put the BBQ smash together and it was adorable!"
As for future epic food shoots, Lyndsey isn't sure what her next huge idea will be. "I need to come up with another 'goal food' to try and top that taco shoot! I do have a few other types of smashes in the works. Let's just say they're hilarious and will be SO stinkin' cute!"
We can't wait! In the meantime, scroll through to see some of Lyndsey's most adorable food smashes to date (as well as a Nutella gem from another photographer!).

A Pharmacist Is Accused of Refusing to Fill a Teen's Birth Control Prescription
In the current state of the nation, women's rights - particularly reproductive rights - are perpetually under attack. And a recent transaction at an Albuquerque, NM, Walgreens is a chilling example.
Here's what went down: A teen girl's mother went to the pharmacy to pick up Misoprostol for her daughter, which she says was prescribed to the teen as she prepared to get an IUD. (The drug is regularly prescribed to prevent stomach ulcers but is also one of two drugs administered together to induce a medical abortion.) However, the mother was denied the drug, simply because the pharmacist personally did not agree with dispensing the medication, citing "personal reasons." The event has become a showdown over reproductive, religious, and personal rights, with Walgreens stepping in to state that it supports employees refusing to carrying out sales like this one if they "morally object."
The incident happened in August 2016, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico and the Southwest Women's Law Center (SWLC) have now partnered to file a formal complaint with the New Mexico Human Rights Bureau.
BREAKING: ACLU of #NM and @SWWomensLaw filed complaint against @Walgreens today alleging sex discrimination.https://t.co/rXVJqZZukq http://pic.twitter.com/AetJPsKLTe
- ACLU of New Mexico (@ACLUNM) June 2, 2017
"Women should be able to walk into any pharmacy that serves the public with full confidence that they will receive the care and medicine they need without being disrespected and discriminated against," ACLU attorney Erin Armstrong said in a statement.
Pamelya Herndon, executive director of SWLC, noted that a man seeking the same medication for stomach ulcers would have gotten treatment, but "because our client was a woman, the Walgreens employee automatically assumed the medication was for a reproductive health."
What's most disappointing is that this isn't the first instance of such discrimination happening at an Albuquerque Walgreens. In 2012, a Walgreens employee refused to fill a woman's birth control prescription, resulting in the company standing for such "moral objections" while the ACLU took action. The situation ended with Walgreens vowing to ensure that employee religious beliefs do not stand in the way of birth control prescriptions being filled.
Yet, four years later, the same situation repeated itself - and the ACLU is not sleeping on that fact.
Walgreens responded to the ACLU complaint in a statement to POPSUGAR. "Our policy is to allow pharmacists and other employees to step away from completing a transaction to which they may have a moral objection and requires the pharmacist or other employee to refer the transaction to another employee or manager on duty to complete the customer's request."
Walgreens adds that its policy will "ensure that in these rare instances, patients are offered reasonable alternatives to access legally prescribed medications" and said the company is planning to "retrain all of our pharmacists and store leadership in New Mexico on policies and procedures relating to conscientious objection, to ensure that we're providing the highest level of patient care and service."
But those fighting against this policy - and the refusal of service the teen and her mother faced last year - say these allowances embolden discrimination against women and weaken women's access to health care. As critics argue, the increased intertwining of politics and religion under the Trump administration is a clear threat to women's rights.
Luckily, organizations like the ACLU are ready and willing to fight for women's rights - even if it's a battle they've had to wage before.

Hmm, Taco Eye Makeup Is the Beauty Trend You Didn't Think Would Ever Happen
Just when you thought makeup trends couldn't get weirder, the taco eye makeup look starts popping up on Instagram. We should have probably expected it. It seems pretty natural that after makeup art celebrating Frida Kahlo and Selena Quintanilla popped up, along with trends likes golden freckles and sunset eye shadow, the next logical move was food makeup. In fact, Taco Bell might have something to do with this new look.
In early May, the fast-food brand made a call for fans to submit their best Taco Bell-inspired makeup looks, resulting in hundreds of tweets under the hashtag #TacoBellMakeup featuring everything from the restaurant's logo to eye shadow with hints of red, green, and brown meant to imitate a beef taco.
While we can't yet call #tacomakeup a trend, a few makeup artists have started celebrating their love for the Mexican food with skillful looks we dare you to try to re-create. Scroll ahead to check them out.

The Happiest Place on Earth Now Sells the New Starbucks Ombre Pink Drink!
After the colossal success of the Starbucks Pink Drink, the coffee chain recently released an Ombre Pink Drink that's similarly adorable but consists of more refreshing citrus flavors. Not only is the trendy beverage now an official menu item, but it's even made its way to the happiest place on earth: Disneyland.
In June, visitors of Disneyland shared pictures of the Ombre Pink Drink at the park. One particular visitor said she was able to specially request it at the Market House Starbucks on Main Street. Nearly a day later, a different visitor was fortunately able to order it at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando.
If you happen to be at a Disney park and don't see the drink on the menu yet, you can also order it as a custom beverage. It's simply a combination of the Cool Lime Starbucks Refresher drink with coconut milk and a splash of Teavana Shaken Iced Passion Tango Tea.
Ahead, see pictures of the splashy drink as it was intended to be enjoyed: in a Disney cup in front of Cinderella's Castle.

Bellissimo! John Krasinski and Emily Blunt Enjoy a Fun, Kid-Free Italian Getaway
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt will be celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary in July, and the couple got a head start on the milestone by returning to where it all began: Italy! The couple was spotted off the coast of Tuscany for a relaxing beach getaway this week - on Monday, John went shirtless and Emily sported a pink printed bikini as they lounged on a yacht and took a dip in the ocean. Emily was also photographed doing a little shopping and checking out cute kids' shoes at a nearby shop.
Back in 2000, Emily and John tied the knot at George Clooney's waterside estate in Lake Como, and since then, they've shared countless cute moments on the red carpet, starred in huge films, and welcomed two daughters; Hazel in 2014 and Violet in 2016.
Here's What to Do If You Miss Your Flight Connection
You're sitting on the tarmac, palms sweating, as your plane creeps toward your gate at a f*cking snail's pace, while the minutes until your connecting flight tick away. There's nothing quite like the sinking feeling I've gotten in my stomach - especially in foreign countries - when the possibility of missing my next flight back to the States becomes more and more of a reality. Unfortunately, if you miss your connection, there aren't always a ton of options, and passengers aren't necessarily entitled to compensation - or even rebooking - in many cases. Make sure you read the airline's fine print and rules when you book with them to avoid derailing your travel plans if you miss a connection. And always give yourself enough time in between flights; a longer connection is better than one that has you running Home Alone-style through the airport.
If it's the airline's fault, and your connecting flight is with that same airline . . .
If your first flight is delayed because of issues with the airline, the airline should rebook you on the next outbound flight to your destination. If the next outbound flight with the airline is the next day, the airline should provide accommodations and meal vouchers. If the issue that caused the delay is weather, however, then its unlikely the airline will compensate you; they will just help you rebook.
If it's the airline's fault, and your connecting flight is NOT with that airline . . .
If you have two separate plane tickets with two different airlines for each leg, then the first airline that caused you to miss your connection is not required to help you rebook and will not compensate you. This is something to consider on more expensive flights when you're booking; even if it saves sometimes to book through a third party and jump from multiple airlines for different legs of your flights, it can sometimes benefit you more to fly through multiple connections on one airline and book your ticket through that airline rather than a third party site to ensure you get compensated in case of a delay or missed connection.
If you miss your connection, and it's your own fault . . .
While some airlines may help you rebook your flight, they are not required to do so, and you will be most likely charged for the cost of that new flight. Furthermore, they will not compensate you monetarily or for any accommodations you need. If you miss a connection because of a long TSA security line, the airport/airline will not claim responsibility for this either, so always give yourself (more than enough) time to get checked in and through security.
